marauder parents hcs:
mostly for my own continuity fanfic writing reasons
remus- hope and lyall; very in love, they're an adventuring turned sitting on the sofa with a cuppa couple. they both sell things at the village market, and help out neighbouring farms. hope died in early 80s and lyall spends the rest of his life mourning her and his son
james- euphemia and fleamont; literally besotted with each other, best friends turned lovers but it was fleamont crushing heavy on euphemia whilst euphemia was in a highschool romance with minerva. died in each other's arms <3
sirius & regulus- orion and walburga; arranged marriage, knew each other since they were babies (being cousins and all). didn't particularly get on, they just tolerated each other and both had numerous affairs
peter- lydia and cora (mum and dad divorced and his dad legally isn't allowed to see him); lydia was a teen mum to peter and later realised she was a lesbian, got with cora whilst peter was a teenager and cora became his unofficial mum-in-law.
dorcas- bob (mum isn't around/left when she was very young); he's bob the builder /real. is very gay. never came out to dorcas (she knew). sirius was the one who told him dorcas was dead, weeks after it happened. and after it came out in the muggle world of sirius being a huge criminal, bob blamed him for dorcas' death.
lily- jean and lee; both huge workaholics (boring office jobs) and put a lot of academic pressure on petunia and lily. *cough* lee is in love with bob *cough*. lily gets the ginger-ness from lee. they both don't know a lot about their kids life, which they regretted after lily's death.
marlene- catherine and ian; catherine is a huge bitch, we hate her. ian is just there. he's a classic sitcom dad- goes to work, reads the paper, watches tv, occasionally fixes stuff in the house and plays football with his sons. he's much closer to marlene's brothers, since catherine doesn't like marlene doing 'masculine' things. they're both middle class, wannabe perfect and traditional family people.
mary- aymee and ronnie; quite chill. ronnie works at the post office, and aymee sells homemade jewellery. they both get on more with mary than her older goth lesbian sister, sy. aymee went to hogwarts, was in hufflepuff, so is the parent to help mary out with magic related things.
emmeline- mi-sook and yeong-su; yeong-su went to hogwarts so got emmeline to live with her grandparents (in scotland) so she could go there too. as such, she's not that close to her parents. she does gets on with her mum, sending letters to each other every week and spending time together when emmeline visits. but doesn't get on with her dad, him being distant and comparing her to her younger siblings
pandora- tilly and cian; they both worked as apprentices to nicholas flamel after finishing school and met each other there. they're the lovegoods (i'm a 'xenophilius took pandora's last name' truther.) regulus' parents let him be friends with pandora in hopes her parents would get regulus a connection to the flamel's. they both dissaproved of xenophilius but agreed it was better than pandora's previous sapphic poly relationship

Macdennis timeline
Macdennis
The 16 season long situationship filled to the brim with sociopathic tendencies, mutual abuse, and disorganized attachment between a man burdened by Catholic guilt who doesn't want love unless it hurts and a deeply dissociated man who can't be authentic unless he's immersed in a facade. And they were roommates.
What can be said that hasn't been said before? Probably nothing... still here's this.
S1-S4 PRE-MACDENNIS
This is before Mac and Dennis find themselves unwittingly thrust into a relationship neither is aware of. There is a homoerotic undertone, albeit usually as more of a joke than anything else. Neither has realized that their feelings for the other goes beyond friendship.
(Season 1 ep 1) Famous tequila scene.
(season 3 ep 4) Mac says I love you to Dennis.
(season 3 ep 15) gang dances their asses off macs dance pantomiming blowing Dennis.
(season 4 ep 1) Man hunters. Dennis puts his balls in Mac's mouth when he's sleeping, and mac shaves his pubes and glues them to Dennis' face.
(season 4 ep 4) Charlie asks Dennis if he still gets the feeling Mac wants to bang them, and that's why Mac makes project badass, Dennis agrees.
(season 4 ep 13) Nightman cometh. Mac gets a boner when Dennis' character pantomimes sex with him in the play. Dennis rips macs heart out (this comes back later)
S5-S7 MACDENNIS INTENTIONAL
Season 5 Macdennis hits like a truck. Dennis has feelings and they are BIG. We the audience witness a masterful display of homoerotic desire wrapped in a stunning amount of cognitive dissonance until "breakup" where Dennis is forced to confront the reality of his feelings. Following this crucial turning point, we are treated to a series of back and forth assertions of no-homo, feelings getting hurt, and lashing out. In order, we get Dennis introducing the dennis system, mac fighting gay marriage, Dennis getting married and kicking Mac out of the apartment, and finally Dennis getting a divorce.
Things are notably different between them post-divorce, marked by a mutual retreat from both Mac and Dennis. There's a shared reluctance to appear overly invested in each other romantically. This dynamic persists into Season 7, where Mac and Dennis noticeably maintain a considerable distance compared to previous seasons. In my honest opinion, this season exhibits the least Macdennis of any. Dennis being unhappy with Mac's weight gain likely contributes to this.
(Season 5 episode 1) Dennis suggests that they pretend to be gay married realtors. Some will say that being gay married was not essential to the scheme. Some would even say that to sell the being married thing Dennis did NOT have to be that touchy touchy. Source of baby boy nickname that has penetrated every corner of AO3 macden fanfiction.
(season 5 episode 8) PADDY'S THONG DUDE!!! PADDY'S THONG! I'm not wearing these because I'm comfortable I'm wearing them cause i wanna turn YOU on, you know what I'm saying??? you get it???
Mac jerks off a shotgun and blows its load in a kneeling dennis' gaping mouth.
(season 5 episode 9) They break up. In the podcast they say that this is a romcom. Dee points out that they act like an old married couple. Realization dawns on dennis's face and he proceeds to freak the hell out. Why? I mean... he knew it was true. We learn that they have a weekly movie night. Mac is jealous of video store clerk guy. We learn that they check in. Deleted scene at the end has Dennis blurting out that Mac has "beautiful lips" and again looking horrified.
(season 5 ep 10) Immediately after break up Dennis introduces his fool proof system for attracting WOMeN with big BIG BOOB for SEX.
(season 6 ep 1) Mac goes on a rampage against gay marriage after just last season being fake gay married to dennis. Dennis immediately gets married and kicks Mac out of the apartment. (Dennis also says he doesn't "have feelings", which Mac internalizes and it comes back in season 12)
(season 6 ep 2) dennis immediately divorces said woman and lets his boy toy (his words) come home.
radio silence all of season 7 except....
(season 7 ep 1) They go to the doctor, mac tries to carry dennis out bridal style. Dennis eats a chimichanga with Mac (romantic).
(season 7 ep 6) cold open, Dennis is holding Macs forearm while they watch the TV.
-season 7 we also learn that Mac slept with Dennis' prom date and it was very easy.
S8-S9 The kiss, the date, and the platonic naked wrestling shower scene
I believe this is the point where Mac starts to get the feeling something is off. (Again, Dennis realized in season 5). Mac has far more dissonance about it though, he like just wants to be best bros with Dennis for life, cause Dennis is like soooo cool. He is definitely not in love with Dennis he just loves Dennis like, as a blood brother. HE IS NOT GAY BECAUSE THAT IS A SIN. HE SERIOUSLY LOVES GOD A LOT.
In Season 8's Dines out Dennis delivers a speech wherein he admits that he thinks of Mac as a man who knows exactly who he is. Season 9's Mac day shows the total elimination of this belief after a full day filled with Macs self hating homophobia contrasting with his out and proud cousin "country mac".
(Season 8 ep 2) Whelp, God only knows how we ended up here after a drought like season 7, but 8 kicks off with a bang with an out of nowhere kissing attempt from Mac… right in front of Charlie too. By the look on Dennis' face I'm going to guess this has never happened before. I genuinely wonder what compelled him to do this…. like….is he just always thinking about it and forgot hes not supposed to do it for real? was it instinct?
(Season 8 ep 6) Dennis deals with emotional numbness, and nothing he tries makes him feel anything until the end of the episode where he feels too much after seeing his dead mother. This is not overtly macdennis but I think it demonstrates how he struggles with emotion and why Mac believes that Dennis does not have feelings.
(season 8 episode 9) Mac and Dennis are going on a fancy dinner date every single month. Monthly dinner and weekly movie nights.... anyway. Mac is upset that Dennis won't say something nice to him so Dennis does a speech to the whole restaurant. Yes he did kinda do it to dunk on frank and charlie. Yes he loved the attention. I think he meant what he said.
(season 8 episode 10) Dennis gets turned on by Mac totally intellectually dominating him while giving his anti science presentation. Also in the car at the end Mac was flirting.
(season 9 episode 3) Mac day. Praise God. Dennis is drowning in a sea of Macs delusion. Mac believes himself to be totally badass and not at all gay while repeatedly demonstrating the opposite. Country Mac shows Dennis what Mac could be if he was all the things he said he was and just embraced that he was gay. Dennis resents Mac.
(season 9 episode 6) saves the day. Macs fantasy involves Dennis wailing over his corpse, proclaiming his love. Dennis' fantasy is interesting, revealing his fear that Mac would abandon him the moment his sexual appeal fades. He envisions the possibility of being loved for more than his sexual abilities, yet his declaration of love precludes Jackie being hit by a car, leading to the loss of her breasts, and Dennis choosing to leave her. Lot to unpack here.
(season 9 episode 8) Mac and Dennis are trying to catch a rat. Mac tries to bash the rat, but Dennis says that its not about brute force, its about seduction. He turns on some romantic music and they both sway back and forth, looking into each others eyes, Mac takes a step forward, but Dee enters the room and the second dennis sees her he spins around and walks away.
I also feel the need to point out that Mac and Dennis went to high school together, and Macs nickname in high school was....well... Ronnie the rat.
(season 9 episode 9) Mac writes into the script of lethal weapon a scene where he and Dennis, I kid you not, wrestle naked in a shower. If you can call it wrestling... though it's more accurately described as an opportunity for an intense, naked embrace.
(season 9 episode 10) Cute food fight scene. Their apartment burns down.
s10-11 Out of their natural environment
Following the incineration of their shared home, macdennis moves in with Dee and all three of them hate it so so much.
(season 10 episode 1) Dennis looks at Mac like he wants to eat him (4 min 24 seconds) Mac says wait Dennis don't go and Dennis turns like he's expecting.... I don't know.
(season 10 episode 5) Mac and Dennis take turns watching and jacking off to creampie videos. Some will say they could just find their own porn, however I think this is one of the numerous creative ways they've found to have a sex life with each other.
(season 10 ep 3) Dennis is diagnosed with BPD.
(season 10 ep 6) The gang embarks on a journey of independence, only to discover that their lives are intricately woven together. For better or worse they will never escape each other, and will likely live this way until they die.
(season 10 episode 10) Dennis creates an entire fake cult to get Mac to do things he wants him to do. Says Macs been looking so good so sexy lately *manipulative*
(season 11 episode 4) Mac turns off the video Dee made about Dennis being raped by the librarian.
(season 11 episode 5) Macdennis play house. Mac asks Dennis if he can hear the beep too, Dennis gaslights him and says no, meanwhile getting increasingly agitated by the pool filter. It's already been explained more better by others but basically this is a metaphor for Mac wanting Dennis to acknowledge what has been happening between them, while Dennis adamantly avoids doing so. Instead, he channels his frustrations into unrelated problems.
Dennis hates going to work alone all day and Mac hates staying home, which could easily be fixed by having Mac come to work with him. Instead, Dennis' solution is a "honey-do list" (a list of chores a man would give his wife) and a dog, which Mac names DENNIS JR. (parallel to Dennis' real kid who is named Brian Jr. ) This kind of relationship paralleling is a recurring theme; for example in gets romantic, double life, and celebrity booze).
In the beginning of the episode Dennis wants to listen to Bryan Adams in the car. At the end of the episode Mac confronts him by saying "everything I do I do it for you, and everything you do you do it for yourself". (referencing the title of a very romantic Bryan Adams song)
dennis says he hates him
(season 11 ep 6) Mac asks Frank if he thinks Dennis hates him, because he just wants him to think he's cool and he puts so much work into this relationship and *unintelligible* (seriously if anyone know what Mac is saying when Frank spaces out please message me)
(season 11 ep 8) Dennis also knows about the gay bar
(Season 11 ep 10) 🎵 Amazing Grace how sweet the sauce 🎵
Mac comes out. When they play fake dinner Mac talks about him and Dennis' future home where they will have dinner parties and touches Dennis' hand. Confused, Dennis questions the idea of it being "their" home, seemingly operating under the misconception that he and Mac might eventually part ways and not continue living together.
Mac prays to god that they be saved and after being rescued he goes back into the closet.
s12 Mac claims to be gay and Dennis leaves the state of Pennsylvania
Season 12 is my favorite season!
Mac comes out, has a gay dream, gives Dennis a present, tries to insert himself as 2nd father of Dennis' child, and is swiftly abandoned.
Things start to get a little too real for Dennis, and hes just a little too vulnerable. Perfectly it turns out he has an opportunity to live the typical nuclear family lifestyle he's envisioned for himself and escape all his troubles.
(season 12 episode 6) Gay Mac rules! rich gay Mac!
The watershed moment wherein Mac comes out as gay for real this time. Dennis is beyond shocked.
(season 12 episode 7) Mac fully grasps that his feelings for Dennis are romantic after having a dream where Dennis kisses him. Upon waking he goes to find Dennis. Again Dennis dances towards him and leans in, Macs eyes light up thinking that his dream is coming true but Dennis slams the door in his face.
(season 12 ep 8) Dennis wants to completely ignore Valentines day because he doesn't think he has anybody who really cares about/loves him. Everyone in the gang openly states that they don't think he has feelings.
At the end of the ep. Mac has Dennis open a crate, which turns out to be an RPG (something that Dennis thinks is awesome and talks about all the time), and he tears up, he's incredibly touched. When Mac says there is no rocket (rendering the gift effectively useless) Dennis says he doesn't care, he loves it. Mac figured out the one thing he wanted more than anything else in the world and got it for him. This is likely not referring to the RPG but instead to the fact that he wanted someone to show him that they love him/care about him.
(season 12 ep 10) Dennis is revealed to have a son with Mandy, a woman who he had sex with on his layover from the wade boggs episode. To get him out of this jam Mac suggests they pretend to be in a relationship. Dennis, reluctantly going along with the plan, tells Mandy he sleeps with women but he is emotionally invested with Mac. When she is fine with it and says she wouldn't mind Brian Jr. having two dads, Mac enthusiastically agrees to parent Dennis' kid with him. When Dennis asks Mac why he would agree to that, since they are not a couple, Mac replies that he thought they could just keep pretending.
Mac wins a bet and gets to refurnish the apartment. He surprises Dennis by recreating their old apartment down to the last detail, save his own bedroom, which he leaves empty. He only buys Dennis a bed because he is hoping Dennis will go along with continuing to share a bed like they did at Dee's.
At the end of the episode Dennis announces he is leaving to go raise his son in North Dakota with Mandy. Nobody tries to stop him.
S13-14 DENNIS IS COMING BACK HOT
Dennis' 2 most angry/upset seasons.
In the season 13 promos Dennis is like a ghost, watching the gang laughing and talking without him. At some points they seem to notice that he's there, but just don't care. He is the only one spooked by the weird things happening around the bar.
In season 13 Dennis' returns and feels as though he is not important or needed by his friends. Mac has a journey of self-discovery, coming to terms with his sexuality and finding his identity as a gay man. Mac relies on Dennis to tell him what to do, desperate to please him, but Dennis wants Mac to take control and take care of him. Dennis only wants the illusion of control.
(Season 13 episode 1) Mac orders a sex doll of Dennis and swears he isn't blowing his loads into it. Dennis comes back.
(Season 13 episode 2) Mac finds a heart shaped lock clue whilst doing an escape room. Dennis says they should keep it between themselves.
(season 13 episode 4) Dennis holds a seminar where he publicly declares his own heterosexuality and lack of interest in Mac.
just gonna leave these quotes-
dennis- "some of you just haven't been careful enough, so youre asking yourself what can I do to save myself now. You gotta clean up your act otherwise you're going down, and you're gonna take me down with you and I ain't going down. You understand? I've been telling you this for years but you refused to listen"
----
mac- "and we should probably stop harassing them"
dennis, replying to Mac- " uh well you know, one step at a time we don't want the whole system to collapse" (but Macs only crime was being too open with his feelings for Dennis)
(season 13 ep 5) Dennis opens the floor for questions about his absence. He totally gets that everyone was giving him some space and respecting his privacy, and he's ready to talk about it now but...they just don't actually care....at all... (including Mac)
(season 13 episode 7) Its my personal interpretation that all of clip show happens in Dennis' mind in an episode of dissociation. He imagines that Mac decided to come with him to north Carolina. He imagines being confronted about why he would want to live with Mac if he "hates" him so much.
(season 13 episode 10) Mac comes out to his father in a beautiful interpretive dance and is rejected.
(season 14 episode 1) Mac tries to get into Dennis' good graces again by staging a scheme to get Dennis laid just like old times. Interestingly, Dennis isn't all that interested in banging. When its not working out with the woman, Dennis decides that it's because the leads are actually Mac and the husband. They can't seem to figure out that the leads are really each other.
Mac and Dennis are paralleled by the married couple while Charlie and Frank are mirrored by the father son duo..
"If you'd just give us a chance, we could tell a love story for the ages, a gay GAY ass love story". WE ARE READY AND SO WILLING
(season 14 episode 5) "Bathrooms at zoos are, like, big Grindr spots for closeted dads." (also refer to Macs super long pining text messages)
(season 14 ep 6) "all that for a whistle, I wonder what you'd do for a biscuit" I really don't understand how but apparently this episode really did happen and it wasn't in someones dream or anything like that??
(season 14 episode 10) Dennis says to Mac it's time to end the game. This could be interpreted as being about their 14 season song and dance, and would be backed up by the fact that the next season shows Mac completely backing off.
s15-s16 Acceptance and regret
mac tries to move on, Dennis misses his baby boy
(season 15 episode 1) We get some cute broke back mountain Macdennis. They play guitar and sing a love song they wrote together, looking into each other's eyes.
(season 15 ep 4) There's a subtle moment that's easy to miss. Dennis pats Mac's hand when they are talking to Charlie and Mac looks down at it, taking a deep breath.
(season 15 ep 5) Dennis has COVID and Mac isn't concerned, in fact he is irritated that Dennis wont admit he's sick. This is a big change from the last couple of seasons where Mac is desperate to take care of Dennis.
(season 16 episode 1) Mac and Dennis throw away all of their furniture including their beds. They now share an inflatable bed/couch and sleep together in it (just a couple seasons ago Dennis was absolutely refusing to sleep in the same bed as Mac). They are touching so much in the bed. Dennis is concerned for Mac because he has been continuously consuming nuts that he is allergic to (there's a metaphor here) and is heavily wheezing. Dennis gently places two fingers on Macs neck to check his pulse.
If Dennis did not want to sleep in the bed with Mac he would have gone and bought another inflatable bed. He would have made Mac sleep on the ground. He would have gone to sleep at Dees house. He wanted to be in that bed with Mac.
(season 16 episode 4) Dennis creates a fake dating profile under the alias of "Johnny". He buys Mac extra large anal beads to put inside of him at all times, and turns them on to signal to Mac to meet him at a hotel. He says he did it to....get him out of the house? and to get Mac to....buy him crab?
Dennis looks so devastated when Mac says he's in love with Johnny. I kinda wonder if it's the idea that Mac could love someone else that upsets him... or if he's reacting to Mac telling him he is in love with him to his face?
This is also the episode where we learn that Dennis has a fool proof method for attracting men. When Mac and Dee ask why he has this system he just shushes them.
(season 16 episode 5) The relationship between Malcom and his dad is a parallel of Mac and Dennis's relationship. The speech at the end to me seems like its hinting that Mac knows more/ has more control and power than is let on.
NEW INFORMATION JUST DROPPED I have just been made aware of the actual parallel between Malcom and the dad possibly being Dennis and Frank.
(season 16 episode 8) Nightmare! Nightmare! Nightmare!
Dennis takes a mental health day. Some people really hated this episode but I really liked it. Mac is putting coal in a pressure cooker to make diamonds. Dennis rips the CEO's (who is wearing a Hawaiian shirt like we've seen Mac wear) heart out, and squeezes it so hard it turns into a diamond and he eats it. This is a direct parallel to the nightman cometh where he also rips Macs heart out.
*edit to add* The director of this episode (who did not write the ep but still was involved in its creation obviously) Heath Cullens, in a reddit QA when asked if this was a nod to dayman replied "Nope. I think pretty much a coincidence." which I think is a total missed opportunity tbh.
This was all in Dennis' mind, and it seems to me that the Mac "situation" has left him with a sense of powerlessness. He feels isolated, trapped in an endless nightmare of his own creation, and he has nobody he can count on to help him, there's nobody he can rely on, he can only trust himself. Compressing the coal into a diamond represents Dennis molding everything to be exactly as he wishes, and by swallowing it he reclaims absolute control.
Always sunny book- : the 7 secrets of awakening the highly effective four-hour giant, today
"Mac for instance is also a 3 in ugly, so even if this exercise we're going to try fails, you'll have some company at your ugly parties. For the record, on the ugly scale charlie is a five, frank is a six, and Dee is a nine." - Dennis

Needle & Groove, 2022.
Years ago there was a record store called Slipped Disc in Valley Stream which specialized in metal, punk, and hardcore, just like None Of The Above in Centereach. Both stores no longer exist with Slipped Disc exiting out in 2008. Owner Mike Schutzman now sells records online and is the organizer of Vinyl Revolution Record Show. What had this store on my radar was that his daughter Amanda was interviewed for No Echo’s record collector’s spotlight. She’s no longer really there but still acts as their buyer and distributor. My friend Danny From The 209 loved Slipped Disc back in his Brentwood days but I never got a chance to visit. Now, here’s Needle & Groove. I had an inkling that maybe there was a little sliver of Slipped Disc’s soul. I’d find out soon enough.
Driving there was a daunting ride taking five major roads to get to. Five. Long Island Expressway, Sagtikos Parkway, Sunrise Highway, Meadowbrook Parkway, and finally Route 27. It’s placed in the busiest and tightest section of Lynbrook, right across from the train station. It was fucking hell trying to find parking. Either you find a parking meter or pick a very tight spot behind a small out-of-the-way shopping center and cross your fingers that you won’t get towed. I chose the latter.
Needle & Groove was the Nassau County equivalent to Riverhead’s Sunday Records. (How many times will I mention that place again? Fuck around and find out.) Shelves all against the walls, boxes on the bottom, and a long middle island of more records. I walked around and saw the vinyl layout of the store. New arrivals, the used alphabet and dedicated artists section. Jazz, soul, reggae, soundtracks and 7” hits. The kicker? They’re having a June sale. $3.00 and $5.00 records, and 50% all 45’s and 12” singles. Any time a store offers you a discount, you take it. All throughout Needle & Groove I noticed that their stickers could be considered a tad high. They’re certainly not (Plainview’s) ‘Vinyl Bay 777’ high which price based on condition and justify jacking up the prices three to four times what you pay elsewhere. Needle & Groove didn’t do such a thing, thankfully. Unless marked, the lowest price for any above-bin record starts at $6.99 and go up from there. As I’d later find out, it wasn’t the pricing that prevented me from buying a lot there, as you’ll see.
Right where I walk in to my right are several rows of discs. Five minutes of quick perusing and I found nothing special. I look up at the cassette rack and I found nothing, either, but the usual pop and best-sellers of the Eighties and Nineties. More cassette racks on the bottom. Nothing. Amusingly, there were a few crates of $1.00 and even 25¢ records, but how good could those be? That’s only the first ten minutes of looking. I had to find something, right? Right? I didn’t think there were any new release LPs I wanted, so I kept perusing through the used bins. They had tons of mostly used soul, R&B, and jazz in the racks. I’m not one for the former two, but I’m always curious as to what jazz titles they carried. At least they carried a lot of obscure artists and unknowns I’ve never seen before. Besides, that section was where my most essential scores were.
I still have a few Ron Carter, Deodato, Hank Crawford, and Ronnie Laws albums I don’t have. Ron Carter’s Blues Farm featured the usual suspects of Billy Cobham, Bob James, Richard Tee, Hubert Laws, Ralph MacDonald. Hank Crawford’s We Got A Good Thing Going also has Bob James, Richard Tee, and Ralph MacDonald plus Bernard Purdie and Idris Muhammad. Deodato’s Artistry featured John Tropea and that was an automatic grab. You can very well see what makes a small portion of my vinyl library.
I spotted several bins of 45’s and thumbed through those as well. I didn’t find much, to be honest. Just only a handful of 7” singles of my Atari childhood and maybe one or two I grabbed if only for the paper sleeve design. They carried so many 45’s from Bobby Darrin…Bobby Vinton? - oh, they’re all the same to me. Lots of blank sleeves so unappealing that I jumped right past them and didn’t find much that struck me. I look below and there were a few more wooden filled with 7” records and 45’s. They were so heavy that I couldn’t lift them up and set them on a flat surface, so nothing helped that I had to kneel down to find gold. Not much luck. No shamrocks, no bars, no lucky ‘7’’s.
My knees were already aching from all that bending but there was no end in sight. Onto the 12” singles sections I go. The 12” format is where I usually land a lot of golden-era hip-hop and rap. I was satisfied to pick out some selections from old-school legends Grandmaster Flash and Melle Mel; both from the Sugarhill label. One that caught my eye was a Solitair record in a generic black sleeve with matching shiny black and silver sticker. But that wasn’t the reason why I caught it. Appearances by Cardinal Offishal and Choclair made it mine since I remembered them from MuchMusic. There were a couple of more pop hits from my Atari childhood I took with me. And how about this one: Techno Animal’s “We Can Build You” from the Brotherhood Of The Bomb era featuring Vast Aire and Company Flow’s El-P. That one was the only compelling pick of my expedition, and one from a few key months at Stony Brook. By then I was aching. My knees were getting tired. “But don’t quit just yet!”, my head tells me. After another thirty minutes going through their used soundtracks, alphabet and dedicated artists’ LP sections I found nothing appealing. Now there were even more vinyl crates sitting on the floor I wasn’t looking forward to.
I took a few moments to re-collect and start digging through those $3.00 records on the floor. I was hard-pressed to find anything. Nothing but the typical ‘been-there seen-that’ albums and artists in rock, R&B, soul, and your gramma’s classic basement records I wanted no part of. Then I get to dive in through the $5.00 records. After sifting through two of those boxes and still coming up blanks, I knew what to expect. I just gave up and called it a day.
Not much from Needle & Groove struck me. There was almost no element of surprise. The only record that really did it was that Techno Animal single, and it was the furthest thing from everything that the store carried. It’s not that I was expecting gold and pearls and stacks of Benjamins because I drove 35 miles to get there, but you can’t control what stores carry so it’s not their fault. No, really. So what’s the point of staying? Don’t get me wrong, Needle & Groove is a neat store and they’ll definitely have their clientele whose into their selection, but that selection is just not for me. That’s the big reason why I left with only $50.00 worth of records.
Here’s a fun fact for that day: it took me two hours to get home. I drove east on Route 27 during rush hour traffic. Sure, it was congested and every vehicle jockeyed for mere inches, but I had layers of puffy high-altitude clouds and plenty of sharp blue sky to look forward to. I had no work the following day, so I could afford to relax and enjoy the tunes playing from my now-disconnected iPhone SE to my system and out of my speakers.

A-T-4 064 RIP Keith LeBlanc
Tumblr media
Drummer Keith LeBlanc along with bassist Doug Wimbish and guitarist Skip Macdonald formed the core of Sugar Hill Records in-house band that played on most of the labels output. This was before sampling so when you hear the Sugar Hill Gang rapping over Chic's Good Times or Funky 4 + 1 rapping over A Taste Of Honey's Rescue Me that's the Sugar Hill Band's re-recordings of those tracks. LeBlanc, Wimbish, and Macdonald had been in the disco group Wood, Brass, and Steel that had a hit in the UK with their cover of Ronnie Laws' Always There
In 1984 LeBlanc left Sugar Hill Records and moved to Tommy Boy to produce but not without some controversy. The first LeBlanc production for Tommy Boy came out while he was still under contract with Sugar Hill, the track was Malcom X - No Sell Out, after Tommy Boy had released the single Sugar Hill claimed ownership of the track and put it out themselves (LeBlanc isn't credited on this version). Sugar Hill subsequently sued Tommy Boy and a temporary restraining order prevented Tommy Boy from marketing their original issue of No Sell Out. Don't mess with Sylvia Robinson. The two labels settled out of court and Tommy Boy was given exclusive rights to the track. Malcom X's estate got a small percentage of profits from the single. Although initially released in the US in late 1983 No Sell Out didn't become a hit until 1984. At the end of 1984 No Sell Out was positioned at number 4 in the Face magazine's single of the year chart
Malcom X - No Sell Out the use of samples is very reminiscent of Double Dee & Steinski's Lesson 1 which of course won Tommy Boy's remix competition a year earlier. Reggie Griffin plays bass, guitar, and mini moog
youtube
Roman Sandalas - This Is It (Instrumental) this one is mixed by Double Dee & Steinski and Keith LeBlanc is reunited with Doug Wimbish and Skip Macdonald
youtube
Beatmaster - Lipservice
youtube
Peace, Unity, Love, and Having Fun. Keith LeBlanc also works on Africa Bambaataa & James Brown 's collaboration Unity for Tommy Boy
Keith LeBlanc, Doug Wimbish, and Skip Macdonald will eventually move to the UK and form Tackhead with Adrian Sherwood (also recording as Maffia with Mark Stewart). The trio's first releases with Adrian Sherwood would come in 1984 recording as Fats Comet
Fats Comet - Zoop Zoop the b-side of the Bop Bop 12" single (this didn't make waves until 1985)
youtube
The Enemy Within - Support The Miners - Strike (General Mix) Keith LeBlanc and Adrian Sherwood's first collaboration. This is conceptually very much like No Sell Out but replacing recordings of Malcom X with Arthur Scargill. The Enemy Within is also a great account written by Seumas Milne

The short film it soundtracks is something too

Book Review: Pattie Boyd “My Life in Pictures” / Jerry Seinfeld “Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee”
I got to review not one but two coffee table photo books this week:
Pattie Boyd My Life In Pictures
Tumblr media
book cover
Earlier this year I got to review Olivia Harrison’s book Came the Lightening: Twenty Poems for George, the book of poems she wrote about her husband George Harrison. She was George’s second wife and was with him from 1978 until his death in 2001. Now I am getting to review the new photo book from model / photographer Pattie Boyd, who was married to George from 1966 to 1977. The main thing people talk about with Pattie Boyd is that she left George for his friend Eric Clapton, he wrote “Layla” about her, yada yada yada. In 2007, Boyd wrote her autobiography Wonderful Tonight: George Harrison, Eric Clapton and Me. But she is a noted photographer because she was in the right place at the right time taking pictures of her friends in the 1960s and 70s. Since the mid 00s she has had photo exhibits all over the world. This new book My Life in Pictures, is a collection of over 300 photos and artwork from her personal archive.
Tumblr media
young Boyd and Harrison
There is a forward from her pal Ronnie Wood. Then it gets right into the photos, beginning with Boyd’s early days as a model along with brief captions and commentary. My favorite photos in this book are the ones of her with George Harrison and her memories about that time. She shares some pictures from her wedding to George, their honeymoon, her trip with The Beatles to India and more. I haven’t read Boyd’s 2007 autobiography Wonderful Today, but I’m sure that goes deeper into the details. This book is more about her personal photographs. They are fantastic photos! It’s no wonder she has had photo exhibits of her work. As a Beatle fan, this is a treat to see candid pics of George during down time.

Jerry Seinfeld Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee Book
Tumblr media
book cover
Jerry Seinfeld is one of the greatest comedians of all time. Between his stand-up comedy, his greatest sitcom of all-time Seinfeld, and his animated movie Bee Movie, he has nothing to prove. But yet he has actually made one of the coolest retirement projects in recent memory with his short-form show Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee. The series, which began on Crackle in 2012 and moved to Netflix in 2018, is just Jerry driving around with another comedian and talking comedy over coffee on their ride to and from. It is literally a show about nothing...but wildly entertaining. It’s like you are eavesdropping on comedians talking insider-baseball. The show is loads of fun and I even included it in my Best TV Shows of the 2010s list. Now Seinfeld has released a coffee table book of Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee Book.
Tumblr media
Seinfeld and President Obama in the famous 2015 episode (the book covers this episode at the White House)
Seinfeld is no stranger to the book world. His 1993 book SeinLanguage of his routines was a fast fun read. In 2002 he wrote a children’s book Halloween. In 2020 he released his collection of routines organized by decade Is This Anything? (read my review here). This is a combination photo book / excerpts of some of the best moments of the show. Over the last few years when some comedians have passed away, I’ve found myself looking back at their episode of CICGC, i.e. Carl Reiner, Norm Macdonald, Gary Shandling and Jerry Lewis. There is an early chapter with a brief oral history about the show. Then it gets into the excerpts organized by the topics like food, music, family, and more. For a fan like me who has seen every episode, this is a reminder of how the series was a comprehensive collection of some of the greatest comedic minds of all time. For casual fans, this will be a special treat too as the excerpts are smart and funny. Seinfeld is a comedian who truly love comedy and more so understanding the inner working of comedy and this series is an extension of that. Did I mention the photography is outstanding here too?

Natural Blues
I got to thinking this morning about how uncommon the color blue is in the natural world. Sure there are lots of examples of blue animals, blue insects, blue flowers, etc., but compared to the rest of the color chart blue is a relatively rare color in nature.
One exception to this trend is birds. While there are many feather colors in the bird world blue is found more often than with any other animal group (although tropical fish of coral reefs may come close).
Tumblr media

And blue feathers are not limited to a single kind of birds, or the birds of a geographic region; it is widespread across bird families and global regions.
You have to admit that's a good thing as blue-colored birds really are quite beautiful.

Handwritten
i had... ideas and wrote them up. enjoy angsty/kinda soft macden based around the soulmate AU where your soulmate’s name is written on your forearm? it was kinda uhhhhhhhhhh an impulse write ngl.
TRIGGER WARNING: BRIEF MENTION OF SELF HARM/SUICIDE- it’s not graphic but please be safe!!
It was a general rule among the gang not to talk about it. For one, Charlie couldn’t even read the name scribbled across his arm in what most would consider scruffy or unkempt handwriting, but he found himself tracing the small letters with his finger mindlessly more often than he cared to admit. It meant absolutely nothing to him, but he never cared to ask somebody else to read it to him. Instead, it was his own little secret.
Dee spoke about hers endlessly- Dennis despised it. She never shut up about him, bragging that he must be rich and famous, just like she’d be someday.
Dennis, on the other hand, could never understand how somebody could be proud of the name they sported on their forearm. It told everybody your deepest, darkest secret, the ones you wouldn’t even admit to yourself. Mac seemed to share these feelings on the subject. Never brought it up.
It was a source of torment Dennis’ whole life. From the moment he could understand the name, he knew it was some sick joke from God. How was he supposed to live with himself if not even God believed that he had feelings? He had them, and christ did he have a lot of them. Literally anyone who cared to see past his ‘playboy’ exterior would know that. But not God, apparently, no, he cursed him with the knowledge that he was going to be alone forever, and left him such a ridiculous name in its place just to taunt him. That’s why he had to get rid of it, the only way he knew how.
It was easy, he had done it hundreds of times... Okay, maybe not to this extent but he had to get rid of it. Steady hand, Dennis, right through the middle.
The next thing he knew he was waking up to the blinding, fluorescent lights of the ER, the faint memory of sirens and... someone calling his name through the haziness of it all buzzing around the back of his mind.
Now the only memory of that night was the long scar running through where that name once was, and Mac’s recollection of how upset he had gotten at the lighting, and not the fact that he had just tried to kill himself. (He hadn’t, that’s just what he told Mac when he finally came around.)
It was a constant reminder even now, planning his high school reunion outfit around hiding his forearms. Nobody would remember it, and he knew that because they all only remembered how handsome he was, how everybody either wanted to be him or wanted to fuck him. Yeah, that was their Dennis Reynolds, not the boy who treated even his own body like a chunk of meat that he brought home from the butchers. Not him.
Mac looked great tonight, although Dennis only thought that quietly and to himself as they made their way to the sign in sheet at their reunion. He never thought they’d come back here, but Mac showed interest, and if it wasn’t an interesting night for him personally, he knew Dee or Charlie would cause some sort of fuck up that amused him.
The receptionist handed Dennis his name tag, he didn’t even have to give her his name, she knew him- whilst she was technically the receptionist in this situation, she had been in his eleventh grade English class. He banged her, long story short. But she didn’t recall Mac.
“Uh, Mac,” He had muttered awkwardly as she enquired his name.
“We haven’t got a Mac here, what’s your full name?” Such an innocent question, and yet Mac hesitated to reply.
Through a cough, he finally returned: “Ronald McDonald.”
The receptionist was holding back a laugh, and maybe Dennis almost was too, but then his heart sank. All of a sudden, there was a new memory of that night. Of just before he’d put that blade to his skin- of the handwriting sprawled across the forearm that now bore excessive scar tissue.
He cleared his throat, shaking the thoughts from his head, opting instead to laugh at Mac as he received his name tag.
“I’m just not gonna wear it.” Mac concluded, about to rip it in half.
“No, no you gotta wear it. They’re not gonna let you in without it.” Dennis feigned teasing, but in reality, his heart was beating a mile a minute. He knew Mac could see through it.
“It’s been so long, it’s probably not even my legal name anymore-” He was flustered, reluctant to admit that it was his real name. It was a real source of hurt for the man, the realest reminder that his father despised him from the moment his birth certificate was finalised; it came with the crushing realisation that he’d never get away from it.
Dennis wasn’t even processing what could have been going through Mac’s head, too focused on himself to even pretend that he could understand in that moment. Too focused on himself to really remember the rest of that conversation, only snapping back into reality when Mac stuck the ridiculous reminder onto his breast pocket, begrudgingly, mind you.
The whole night was just... wrong from then on, for Dennis especially; the blinding realisation that he was not Who He Thought He Was more evident than ever. Everyone here hated him, and they took no care in hiding that fact from him.
When his prom date admitted she was with Mac that night she stood him up, something snapped in him. Mac, his ‘soulmate’ or whatever cruel joke that turned out to be, had stolen that night of happiness from him. If not his soulmate, his best friend? The same guy who let Dennis pass out on his couch when he couldn’t stand being at home, the guy who bought him weed even though he wasn’t the one with the rich parents, even though his dad was in and out of prison his whole life and he had always expressed that he never wanted to be like him. The guy who had feelings. He didn’t often physically lash out at Mac, but oh God tonight was one of those nights; he found himself lunging at the man without a second thought, and
nothing other than the burning of his throat as screaming words left his throat was clear until the two of them were torn apart by the people Dennis has assumed would have been the ones to cause chaos.
“How could you?” His ears were burning at the sound of his own voice- he knew he was making a fool out of himself but couldn’t bring himself to stop.
Mac just watched his friend, trying desperately to figure out an excuse- he couldn’t admit the real reason without outing himself in front of a school full of people who told him what he was with such an intense hatred his whole life. Dennis couldn’t stand it, and through the silence, all of the eyes on him finally became too much for him. He found himself storming off within a few seconds after asking Mac how he could’ve done it.
He didn’t even know where he was going, the nearest bathroom maybe.
Charlie was passed out on the floor next to a bucket of whatever-the-fuck he had mixed up that turned out to be too much for even him, but Dennis couldn’t even acknowledge it, kicking the bucket aside and staring himself in the eye in the mirror. Why did he care? He hated that girl. He only asked her to prom to prove that he could bag her- why did this hurt so much?
The door swung open but he didn’t react- Mac cleared his throat to try and gain some sort of acknowledgment, but Dennis was beyond the point of caring in this spiral.
“Dennis, I’m sorry man,” That was all he could get out before Dennis cut him off with a scoff.
“Are you now? What for? For ruining my chances of having a happy memory of prom? For desperately trying to undermine me my whole life just because I’m better than you? For-” Mac cut him off in return.
“For all of that, yeah- I was just trying to help you, dude.” Maybe Dennis could hear a hint of sadness in his voice.
“To help me?” He laughed- that laugh that Mac hated because it meant Dennis wasn’t actually listening to his apology. “How the fuck would that help me, Mac.”
“You know damn well you didn’t like her, Den. You did it for a bet and it was self destructive.” Mac justified, crossing his arms across his chest.
“And how the fuck would you know that?” “Because I know you, man.”
Maybe it was at that moment he could feel his heart break, because it was true, Mac knew him. But he needed something to be mad about, because otherwise he would have to admit what was really wrong.
“You don’t.” Dennis’ voice became quiet. He wasn’t yelling anymore; he didn’t know why he had been yelling at all.
“I know everything about you, man.” There it was, that desperate need to be better than him.
“Really? You know everything about me?”
“I do-” Mac was cut off when Dennis started frantically rolling up his sleeves.
“So you know why I did this?” His voice was frantic as he exposed his forearm to his best friend for the first time since that night in the hospital.
Mac swallowed- being suddenly faced with the scar that was undoubtedly the cause of the worst night of his life was not a fond moment. “You tried to kill yourself.” His tone seemed disinterested- mostly because he was trying to detach the memory from this moment.
“No, Mac, I was getting rid of that fact that it was your fucking name written across my arm.” Dennis’ eyes were burning into Mac, and he felt more exposed than ever. A shaky breath left Mac’s lungs.
“That was my name?” Mac’s eyes fell. Did he hate him that much? Did he really need to remove any slight sign that he existed? To that extent?
“Yeah. You don’t know shit about me.”
“You could’ve just told me you didn’t want me around, y’know.” It was then that Dennis finally processed the shift in Mac’s voice from defensively sad to... well, broken. There was no other way to put it.
“What? No, Mac, I didn’t know it was your name-” He tried to justify it, but now his excuses just sounded as pathetic as Mac’s. He wasn’t going to believe that his own best friend didn’t even know his name.
“Everybody knew that, Dennis.” It was true, it was a large part of the bullying throughout highschool.
“You know me, Mac- always in my own world, never paying attention-” Then came that awkward chuckle, the one Dennis always gave when he was uncomfortable or didn’t know how to get out of a situation. Mac knew all of these subtle changes in the way Dennis sounded, and yet he didn’t even know Mac’s real name.
“Do you even know anything about me?” Mac was hurt, he had to admit. “You don’t, do you? And you’re asking how I could do that to you? I was trying to protect you, man! And you don’t even know my name!”
“Your dad went to prison in our sophomore year- drug possession, and he tried to get you to smuggle what little the cops hadn’t found into prison for him. Your mom never payed attention to you so you waited out your Sundays in church, where you learned literally everything you know about life from God. You let me crash in your basement everytime Dee was getting too much for me, made me eat when I didn’t think I deserved to, Mac, you’re literally my best friend- Maybe I don’t know what other people think is important, but God do I know you. ” It all spewed out of him like he had shaken up a bottle of coke and finally unscrewed the lid- Mac looked taken aback, and for a moment, Dennis regretted telling him everything.
Mac cleared his throat. Was he mad?
Dennis was about to apologise when Mac pulled his suit jacket off, pushing up his shirt sleeve to reveal the faded letters on his own forearm. “You’re mine too, y’know..” He sighed. “You didn’t have to do that, you could’ve talked to me, you could’ve looked up the name in like... a yearbook or something. You nearly died, Dennis.”
“I know. I was stupid- I still am.” Dennis shook his head, sitting against the sink and putting his face into his hands, followed by a shaky sigh. He was only doing it to hide the fact that he was almost crying. But Mac knew, anyway.
“I know.” It was a cocky move, he knew, but he finally closed the distance between them, resting a hand on Dennis’ shoulder. “I also know that you’re crying, Man. I know you, you don’t gotta hide from me.”
He moved his hands from his face and crossed them across his chest instead, not making eye contact because that was too much for him right now. Mac’s hand found its way to the back of Dennis’ head, fingers gently intertwined with tiny curls of dark brown hair.
“I love you man, you know that?” Dennis knew. But maybe tonight was the first night he’d meet that with an undefinable silence as opposed to the snarky: “I know.”
