I’ll go ahead and say it: Robert Morgan might very well be the best living American poet. He is certainly the best living poet from our region. His work spans decades, and each book plays with different forms, styles, subjects, and characters. From hardscrabble farms to pondering solar terrestrial physics, his work spans the gambit and does so with a poetic clarity few can rival. He published his first book “Zirconia Poems” in 1969. This is one of the 25 hardback copies I’ve only heard rumors of until now. My friend Chan Gordon helped me find some of Morgan’s rarer chapbooks and such, and he always joked that one day he would sell me his Zirconia. Chan would go on to publish a small fine press edition of Morgan’s later book “October Light.” Morgan sent Chan this copy, and it includes the accompanying letter. I’m pleased to add it to the collection, as it will also serve as a reminder of Chan’s longstanding love and promotion of literature from the southern mountains. I’ve included the poems “Hunting” and “Junkyard After Storm” here. Fine book, without a jacket as issued. Numbered 19/25, and signed by Morgan. Association Copy. Honestly my 22nd birthday could not get any better! With dissertation handed in last Friday, Robert Morgan signed my own copy of dissertation As well as also drawing Bobby on it too! Lecture Notes: Robert Morgan

His work is horror inspired but not inherantly meant to be horror. He spoke about some of the films he made.

Cat with Hands (2001) -------------------------

- It was made for Channel 4 / Moving Image Musume

- Too scary to be shown after the Channel 4 News

- Was based a rekering nightmare his little sister had

- The cat used was a termidaxied cat with life cast, silican rubber child hands.

- Everything was life sized

- The animated boy was just an actor dressed with a mask.

- Replacment masks were used to increas the creatures face size.

- Filmed over six weeks: Animated in a month; live actions shots done in 2 weeks.

The Seperation (2003)----------------------------

- For F4C in Wales.

- 35mm film

- This ws sponsered for a year.

- Puppet skin was made from Silcon Rubber with added pigment to give it a fleshy look. Vasalin can also be used to make the ‘skin’ have a shine.

- Puppets were about 20ish centermeters high; about as big as a barbie doll.

- The set was about 3/4 meters.

Bobby Yeah ----------------------------------------

- This film was started without a story. Scenes were filmed saved and then edited into a story after.

- Took about 3 years and cost about $3000 to make.

- Was filmed in a spare room.

- Film was eventually recognised for being what it was.

- Making the film was freeing as there were no real restiction and was just made with creative motivation.

- The story didn’t have aplan it was just created moment to moment.

- The charachter was made first before anything else, there was potential in his face.

- Harder parts of the film were given rough storyboards.

- The music comes after but the atmos is thought about whilst the film is in the making.

Invocation --------------------------------------------

- £3000 from channel 4′s Random Acts.

- Was a reaction to Bobby Yeah.

- The attack bear was captured through long exosuer images.

Belial’s Dream -----------------------------------

- Alove letter to the film Basket Case.

- Was made quickly and very cheeply.

- Painted with a Silcon paint base, mixed with oil paint. Use as shading to the puppets.

To Dust -------------------------------------------------

- Made for a live action film.

- Character dreams of how his wife might be after death.

- Sequance shots.

ABC’s of Death -------------------------------------------

- ‘L’ for lice.

- The only time he tried to actually make something horrible and disgusting.

- Bubbly puddle on the floor was made from vasaline, cos-cos and a bit of fake blood.

- Francis Bakin was a big influance.

- Wanted something more vibrant and colourful rather then monachrom.

- The film ‘Fed without a Face’ was also an insperation.

I also got to ask after the lecture how he filmed camera movements and he said that he would take an old tripod, lay it down and tilted the camera up and then would just rotate the needed axis’. i’ve found this really helpfull because I didn’t really know how to go about moving my camera after the characters so this has helped, even though it’s very obvious I hadn’t thought of it - yay for questions!

Pleased to receive the Tenth Anniversary Expanded Edition of Jesse Graves’s first book “Tennessee Landscape with Plighted Pine.” I can remember finding a copy of this in a bookstore before I knew much about local, or even regional, literature and it came as a revelation to me that there might be a living poet who talked about the places around me, let alone someone who addressed contemporary concerns. I’ve since had my eyes opened to the huge amount of literature in the region, but seeing “Blighted Pine” in the title came as a surprise to me back then. This expanded edition comes with comments from a host of fine authors, such as Robert Morgan, Rita Sims Quillen, Fred Chappell, Jeff Daniel Marion, and Ron Rash. The edition also has an intro by Matthew Wimberly (@blueridgepoet). Fine new book from @texasreviewpress and I’m looking forward to the 12 new poems.
