Vickers Family Reception at the Harn Museum

Surrounded by family and friends, Samuel and Roberta Vickers celebrate the opening "A Florida Legacy: Gift of Samuel H. and Roberta T. Vickers” exhibit showcasing the Vickers family over 140 piece art collection gifted during a reception for the to the Harn Museum of Art at the University of Florida.

“The Vickers Collection is unique in its power to convey both the exquisite natural beauty and the rich history of people in Florida — the ruggedness and grandeur of its landscapes and the highs and lows of its human history through the centuries,” UF President Kent Fuchs said. “Sam and Robbie have shared a treasure with us, and we are thrilled to have the privilege of sharing their collection in turn with all visitors to the Harn Museum.”

As an integral part of the University of Florida campus, the Harn Museum of Art will share the Vickers’ gift as an important new resource to strengthen faculty collaboration, support teaching and enhance class tours, and provide research projects for future study. “A Florida Legacy” is organized along six thematic sections that address many prominent subjects represented in the Vickers Collection: nature, history, landmarks, diversions, living and impressions.

The “Florida Nature” section includes iconic views of Florida forests, beaches and wetlands.

The “Florida History” section includes nineteenth-century drawings of important figures in Seminole history, an early map of Florida, and early depictions of historic cities such as St. Augustine.

The “Florida Landmarks” section showcases views of historic forts, town squares and city parks in a number of cities across the state.

The “Florida Diversions” section features familiar sites such as people enjoying themselves at crowded beaches and at popular destinations such as racetracks, Silver Springs, and the Everglades.

The “Florida Living” section focuses on Florida scenery, domestic architecture and scenes of daily life.

Lastly, the “Florida Impressions” includes lively sketches on paper that were created “on the spot” and represent the artists’ immediate, personal responses to their Florida subjects.

Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (2021)

What’s that? Fans of the Resident Evil games complained the 2002 film and its sequels weren’t faithful enough to the game? Well, your grievances have not gone unheard. Writer/director Johannes Roberts' Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City sticks to the source material when it comes to the tone, the characters, and the monsters. This isn’t a video game, however. It’s a movie, and when your “life” isn’t at stake, when the action and horror are shown from this faraway point of view… you realize how poor the writing is.

In 1998, Claire Redfield (Kaya Scodelario) returns to Raccoon City to find her brother, Chris (Robbie Amell). She believes the Umbrella Corporation is leaving the city because they know something is coming. When a strange illness suddenly begins transforming the citizens, police officers Leon S. Kennedy (Avan Jogia), Jill Valentine (Hannah John-Kamen), Richard Aiken (Chad Rook), Brad Vickers, and Albert Wesker (Tom Hopper) investigate the remote Spencer Mansion.

The film deliberately distances itself from the action-oriented superheroics of the Milla Jovovich films and instead focuses on horror. Unfortunately, it's never scary. The cheap attempts to frighten - often generated by characters stupidly standing still while threats advance towards them - are undone by the characters, all of which are forgettable when they aren't infuriatingly moronic. I’ve seen a lot of movies with crappy police officers. Leon S. Kennedy is by far the worst. The man does nothing but screw up. If this were a game, you’d turn around and shoot him right there and then. He’s destined to be nothing but a liability but he’s a main character so he's got a plot shield at all times. He's the worst but there’s no one to like or care about. Claire and Chris’ backstories are convoluted, full of unexplained details, and way too silly for you to swallow any of this.

The horrors come in both zombie/mutant and human forms. You won’t find any memorable flesh-eating ghouls but anyone who knows anything about Resident Evil knows they’re minor perils as you figure out the controls. The real threats are the mutant creature bio-weapons, which we get a few of and would bafflingly look more menacing if they had a big life bar hovering above them. On the human side, the comically sinister Dr. William Birkin (Neal McDonough) acts like a madman from a bad comic book - his motivations are... questionable. You’d think if he were THAT gifted and important, Umbrella would’ve gotten him out of the city weeks ago. As for the Corporation, it’s still just evil for evil’s sake. Their attempt at a coverup is quite laughable all things considered.

Welcome to Raccoon City is covered with clumsy bits of exposition that will give the fans plenty of opportunities to elbow each other in excitement. Enough to distract them from performances more dreadful than any of the (surprisingly few) zombies we see? I don’t think so. People keep talking but you don’t start caring. All you do is wait for these dingbats to find some improbable escape route so they can head towards the sequel hinted at during the end credits. I wouldn’t hold my breath. While this movie looks decent for its small budget (about $25 million), it stinks of an effort no one at the studio believed in. I suspect Welcome to Raccoon City was released now so it can be quickly forgotten by everyone but the most die-hard video game-turned-movie enthusiasts, who will only mention it as “that other Resident Evil movie no one remembers”. (Theatrical version on the big screen, December 5, 2021)

A Florida Legacy: Sam and Robbie Vickers’ transformational gift to the Harn Museum of Art

Here is the video on The Florida Art Collection, an extensive collection of Florida-themed paintings, drawings, and watercolors that includes many prominent American artists from the late 19th to the mid-20th centuries including paintings by such celebrated artists as Winslow Homer and John Singer Sargent gifted by Samuel and Roberta Vickers as the collection transitions from their North Florida home to the Harn Museum of Art.

Resident Evil Reboot Movie Delayed by Two Months

Sony is going to wait just a little bit longer to welcome us all to Raccoon City. Reboot movie Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City was previously announced for a September 3 debut, but that timing has been delayed by a couple months to November 24.

As Variety notes in their report on the delay, September 3 is also when Disney's upcoming Marvel outing, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, is set to open. With that in mind, it makes sense that Sony might not want to go up against an MCU movie in an already tumultuous theatrical calendar.

Director Johannes Roberts (47 Meters Down) is looking to take things back to the late '90s with this one. Here's how the logline describes the story of the new Resident Evil:

In the once booming home of the pharmaceutical giant Umbrella Corporation, Raccoon City is now a dying Midwestern town. The company’s exodus left the city a wasteland…with great evil brewing below the surface. When that evil is unleashed, the townspeople are forever…changed…and a small group of survivors must work together to uncover the truth behind Umbrella and make it through the night.

Doris Bare, 77

Doris Elaine Bare, age 77, of Elkin, passed away Saturday, January 19, 2019 at Chatham Nursing Center. She was born October 12, 1941 in Locust, N.C. Ms. Bare was preceded in death by a brother, Junior Simpson and three daughters, Tammy Mastin, Janet Spark, Catherine Griffith.

Surviving are her son, Ricky C. Bare and wife Teresa of Hays; daughters, Samantha E. Branaman and husband Ken of Bloomington, Indiana, Lori Mastin and husband Keith of Ronda; and sister, Elaine Simpson of Locust, N.C.; grandchildren, Gage Branaman, Jesse Walker, Jonathan Walker, Cory Walker, Kayla Mastin, Matthew Mastin, Joshua Johnson, Lauren Johnson, Dustin Bare, Anthony Stone, Bobby Sprinkle, Shannon Arthur, Brent Couch, Megan Eggers; and thirteen great grandchildren.

Memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 26, 2019 at Miller Funeral Chapel.

William Barnes, 51

William Barnes, 51 William Edward "Chubby" Barnes, age 51, of Roaring River, passed away Saturday, January 19, 2019 at Curis Nursing Home in Wilkesboro. He was born January 25, 1967 to William Parker and Sarah Barnes Jackson. Mr. Barnes was a member of Mt. Valley Missionary Baptist Church in Ronda and employed with Tyson Foods for 28 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, the Pittsburg Steelers football and Duke basketball. Mr. Barnes was preceded in death by his parents.

Surviving are his wife of 22 years, Angela Bailey Barnes; three sisters, Mea Rosetta Barnes of Taylorsville, Althea Howell of Boomer, Saretta Redmon of Wilkesboro; three brothers, Dale Barnes of North Wilkesboro, Pete Barnes and Vincent Barnes both of Wilkesboro; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be January 24, at Miller Funeral Chapel with Pastor Casey Walker, Pastor John S. Bailey II and Rev. Ronald Howell officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Valley Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery in Ronda. The family will receive friends at Miller Funeral Service from 1:00 until 2:00 on Thursday, prior to the service. Flowers will be accepted. Herbert Taylor, 89

Mr. Herbert Curtis Taylor, age 89 passed away Thursday, January 17, 2019 at Wilkes Senior Village.

Funeral services were January 20, at Stony Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Phillip Boyce and Rev. David Testerman officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Mr. Taylor was born March 14, 1929 in Ashe County to John McKinley and Dorthy Payne Taylor. He served in the United States Army. He was a member of Stony Hill Baptist Church and served as a deacon.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife; Wilma Whittington Taylor, a son; Mark E. Taylor, a grandson; Jeremy T. Taylor, two sisters; Della Faye Miller and Nora Mae Cathey and one brother; Ralph Taylor.

He is survived by two sons; David Taylor and wife Teresa of Purlear and Scott Taylor and wife Jennifer of Alpharetta, GA, daughter-in-law Pauline Taylor of Purlear, seven grandchildren; Christopher D. Taylor, Amy T. Sidden, Sarah Taylor, Seth Taylor, Nora Taylor, and Benjamin Taylor, three great grandchildren; Zack Taylor, Megan Taylor and Josh Taylor.

Veatrice Parsons, 90

Mrs. Veatrice Elizabeth Anderson Parsons, age 90 of Wilkesboro passed away Thursday, January 17, 2019 at her home.

Funeral services were January 21, at Reins-Sturdivant Chapel with Rev. Allen Lunsford, and Rev. Pete Parrish officiating. Burial was in Piney Creek Methodist Church Cemetery in Alleghany County.

Mrs. Parsons was born June 23, 1928 in Wilkes County to Lawrence W. and Martha S. Shew Anderson. She was a member of Gordon Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband; Leff Parsons, two sisters; Oma Harrold and Stella King, a step-daughter; Cora Sue Wagoner and three step-sons; Leff Parsons, Jr., Jimmy Parsons and Tommy Parsons.

She is survived by two daughters; Carolyn Clark and husband Ewel of Lexington, Judy Kay Parsons of Wilkesboro, two sons; Glenn Parsons and wife Deborah of Charlottesville, VA, Jack Parsons of the home, two step-sons; Billy Joe Parsons and wife Judy of Purlear, Jerry Parsons and wife Bobbie of Winston-Salem, eighteen grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren, five sisters; Ethel Beshears and husband Benny of Big Ivey, Myrtle Parsons of Lexington, Blanche Curtis and husband Gib of Wilkesboro, Rose Lunsford and husband Allen of Union Grove, Jewel Parsons of North Wilkesboro, four brothers; Russell Anderson and wife Nadine of Winston Salem, James Anderson of Rural Hall, Lawrence Anderson wife; Odell of Statesville and Earl Anderson of North Wilkesboro.

Mr. Owen Wagoner, age 88 of Millers Creek passed away Tuesday, January 15, 2019 at Wake Forest Baptist-Wilkes Medical Center.

Funeral services were held January 18, at Reins-Sturdivant Chapel with Mr. Steve Johnson, Rev. Michael Church and Rev. Ryan Penley officiating. Burial was in Mountlawn Memorial Park.

Mr. Wagoner was born November 17, 1930 in Wilkes County to Con Monroe and Molley Cleary Wagoner. He was self-employed as a logger.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife; June Lane Wagoner and son-in-law; Larry Brown.

He is survived by three daughters; Rosie L. Wagoner of the home, Mandy L. Brown of North Wilkesboro and Mary Jane Johnson and husband Steve of Millers Creek, two sons; Robert L. Wagoner and wife Loretta and Thomas G. William "Bill" Canie Farrington, a loving husband, father, grandfather and step father, age 84, of North Wilkesboro, passed away Tuesday, January 15, 2019 at his home. He was born June 26, 1934 in Wilkes County to James A. and Artha Royal Farrington. He was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church; member of the Lions Club; and retired as Chief Maintenance

Engineer from Flavorich. Bill loved playing country music. Bill's favorite song, "Go Rest High" will be performed by special music guest, Lloyd Church. Mr. Farrington was preceded in death by his parents; and his first wife, Emogene Cardwell Farrington.

Surviving are his wife, Evelyn Louise Blevins Farrington; sons, Garry Farrington and wife Glenda of Winston Salem, Michael Farrington and wife Diane of North Wilkesboro; grandchild, Kristen Farrington of North Wilkesboro; step-sons, Bob Cold of Atlantic, Virginia, Marty Cold and wife Lorri of Nacogdoches, Texas; and brother-in-law, Wayne Cardwell of North Wilkesboro.

Funeral service were January 19, at Oak Grove Baptist Church off 268 East with Rev. Joel Blevins officiating. Entombment followed in Mountlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum. Bob Wells, 80

Mr. Bob Lee Wells, 80, of North Wilkesboro, passed away on Tuesday, January 15, 2019.Bob was born on March 18, 1938 in Dade County Florida to Sidney James Wells and Opal Williams Wells. Bob enjoyed exercising, weight lifting, 50's memorabilia, radio broadcast and reading his Bible.

Live List

Right so when I first started going to more gigs in about 2006, I started to keep a list of all the bands I’d seen so I didn’t forget - right from the very first concert I ever attended, which was Mel C in 2000.

I’ve somehow managed to keep this relatively updated over the years, through old diaries and the fact that I keep all my concert tickets (which I keep in photo albums!) HOWEVER, some tickets go missing/get taken away, and I can’t always remember all the support acts, but this is a *pretty* accurate list of the bands I’ve seen, for anyone who’s interested.

This includes festival appearances and support bands (though not all support bands - only bands I’ve actually paid attention to.)

I’m not convinced some of the numbers are 100% correct because it’s hard to keep track when you’ve been seeing certain bands live for so long!!!

Năm ngoái cả 2 đội đều đặt mục tiêu lọt vào nhóm cạnh tranh vé thăng hạng, nhưng đôi bên đều gây thất vọng khi chỉ cán đích ở khu vực giữa BXH. Lẽ dĩ nhiên là với thực lực của mình, cả 2 lại đặt mục tiêu thăng hạng mùa này.

Nhưng nhìn vào cách đôi bên chuẩn bị nhân sự cho mùa bóng năm nay, có thể thấy hy vọng trở lại môi trường bóng đá đỉnh cao xứ sương mù với cả 2 đội là không đơn giản. Cả 2 không có sự bổ sung nào thực sự chất lượng, với Swansea thì họ còn mất đi sao trẻ sáng giá Daniel James. Nhưng đó là chuyện đường dài, còn trong lần gặp gỡ ngày hôm nay, Swansea đang tỏ ra là lựa chọn sáng giá hơn.

Lịch sử ghi nhận thành tích đối đầu không tốt với Swansea khi họ chỉ thắng được 1/6 lần gần nhất đón tiếp Hull City trên sân nhà. Nhưng điều đó lại không khiến nhà cái có sự nhìn nhận thiếu tích cực với “bầy thiên nga”. Swansea vẫn ở cửa trên trong cuộc chiến này với tỷ lệ chấp hòa, định mức không hề thấp với 1 trận cầu mở màn của đôi bên.
