Vickers Family Reception at the Harn Museum

Surrounded by family and friends, Samuel and Roberta Vickers celebrate the opening "A Florida Legacy: Gift of Samuel H. and Roberta T. Vickers” exhibit showcasing the Vickers family over 140 piece art collection gifted during a reception for the to the Harn Museum of Art at the University of Florida. 

“The Vickers Collection is unique in its power to convey both the exquisite natural beauty and the rich history of people in Florida — the ruggedness and grandeur of its landscapes and the highs and lows of its human history through the centuries,” UF President Kent Fuchs said. “Sam and Robbie have shared a treasure with us, and we are thrilled to have the privilege of sharing their collection in turn with all visitors to the Harn Museum.”

As an integral part of the University of Florida campus, the Harn Museum of Art will share the Vickers’ gift as an important new resource to strengthen faculty collaboration, support teaching and enhance class tours, and provide research projects for future study. “A Florida Legacy” is organized along six thematic sections that address many prominent subjects represented in the Vickers Collection: nature, history, landmarks, diversions, living and impressions. 

The “Florida Nature” section includes iconic views of Florida forests, beaches and wetlands. 

The “Florida History” section includes nineteenth-century drawings of important figures in Seminole history, an early map of Florida, and early depictions of historic cities such as St. Augustine. 

The “Florida Landmarks” section showcases views of historic forts, town squares and city parks in a number of cities across the state. 

The “Florida Diversions” section features familiar sites such as people enjoying themselves at crowded beaches and at popular destinations such as racetracks, Silver Springs, and the Everglades. 

The “Florida Living” section focuses on Florida scenery, domestic architecture and scenes of daily life. 

Lastly, the “Florida Impressions” includes lively sketches on paper that were created “on the spot” and represent the artists’ immediate, personal responses to their Florida subjects.

21 Salutschüsse und Beifall in Washington: Donald Trump ist als 45. Präsident der Vereinigten Staaten vereidigt worden. Vor dem Kapitol in Washington legte er den Amtseid ab – und richtete sich mit einer kämpferischen Rede an das Volk, um dessen Wohl es jetzt zuallererst gehen solle.

Donald Trump bleibt im Angriffsmodus: Mit einer kämpferischen Ansprache hat er sich direkt nach seiner Vereidigung an das amerikanische Volk gerichtet – und der politische Elite den Kampf angesagt. Der 45. Präsident der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika versprach einen Bruch mit der US-Politik, wie er sie bisher empfunden hat: Zu lange habe eine kleine Gruppe in Washington die Geschicke des Landes gelenkt und im Wohlstand gelebt, während Jobs im Land verloren gingen. Das Washingtoner Establishment habe sich nur selbst geschützt und nicht die Menschen dieses Landes, sagte Trump.

“Für viele Familien da draußen gab es nur wenig zu feiern – das wird sich jetzt alles ändern. Genau hier, genau jetzt”, rief er den Zehntausenden Menschen zu, die sich auf der National Mall in der US-Hauptstadt Washington versammelt hatten. “Dieser Moment gehört Euch. Das ist Euer Tag, das ist Eure Feier. Und das ist Euer Land. Wir übertragen die Macht von Washington zurück an Euch – das Volk.”

“Wir müssen unsere Grenzen schützen”

“Ab diesem Tag gibt es eine neue Vision für dieses Land”, rief Trump seinen Anhängern zu. Ab heute gebe es nur eine Devise: “Nur Amerika zuerst”, sagte Trump und knüpfte damit an seinen Wahlkampf an, in dem er mantraartig wiederholt hatte: “Wir werden Amerika wieder groß machen.” Fortan gälten zwei Regeln, so Trump: “Kauft amerikanisch, stellt amerikanisch ein”.

“Uns eint das rote Blut der Patrioten”

Er rief zu einem “neuen Nationalstolz” auf, der “die Spaltungen heilen” werde. In der von starkem Pathos geprägten Rede appellierte Trump mehrfach an den Patriotismus der Amerikaner. Ein neuer Nationalstolz werde die Wunden Amerikas heilen, sagte er. Wenn Amerika vereint sei, sei es nicht aufzuhalten. “Wir werden ungleich größer träumen”. Niemand solle sich einreden lassen, dass das nicht zu schaffen sei. Amerika müsse seine Teilung überwinden. “Ob wir weiß oder schwarz sind, uns alle eint das rote Blut der Patrioten.”

Mit einer gemeinsamen Anstrengung würden die USA wieder stark, wohlhabend, stolz und sicher werden, sagte Trump. Und er fügte hinzu: “Wir müssen unsere Grenzen schützen und uns davor schützen, dass uns andere die Arbeitsplätze wegnehmen.” Zudem kündigte er ein hartes Vorgehen gegen den Terrorismus an: “Wir werden die zivilisierte Welt gegen den radikal-islamistischen Terrorismus vereinen, der völlig vom Antlitz der Erde verschwinden wird.”

“Heute fängt alles an”

Trump hatte die Bühne vor dem Kapitol mit einem nach oben gerichteten Daumen betreten. Im Publikum nahmen der scheidende US-Präsident Barack Obama und sein Vizepräsident Joe Biden Platz. Auch die Familie von Trump war dabei. “Heute fängt alles an. Ich sehe Euch um 11.00 Uhr zur Vereidigung. Die Bewegung geht weiter – die Arbeit beginnt”, hatte er am Morgen getwittert. Seit der Amtsübernahme twittert Trump nun als @POTUS – “President Trump”. Berichten zufolge will er seinen persönlichen Account aber behalten.

Rangeleien von Trump-Gegnern mit der Polizei

Neben zahlreichen Trump-Anhängern haben sich in Washington auch viele Gegner des neuen US-Präsidenten versammelt. Kurz vor der Vereidigung gab es erste gewaltsame Proteste. Mehrere Hundert schwarz gekleidete und vermummte Demonstranten zogen randalierend durch das Zentrum der US-Hauptstadt. Die Trump-Gegner warfen Steine und zerstörten Schaufensterscheiben. Die Polizei setzte Tränengas ein, um die Demonstranten auseinanderzutreiben. Zwei Polizisten wurden laut Medienberichten verletzt ins Krankenhaus gebracht.

Die Sicherheitsmaßnahmen in der Stadt sind enorm: Große Teile der Innenstadt sind durch Beton- und Metallbarrikaden für den Autoverkehr abgesperrt. Rund 28.000 Sicherheitsbeamte sind im Einsatz.

“Wir müssen uns wehren”

Viele Demokraten blieben der Amtseinführung demonstrativ fern. Der demokratische Präsidentschaftsbewerber Bernie Sanders machte den Trump-Kritikern Mut. “Heute wird ein schwieriger Tag für Millionen von Amerikanern, auch für mich”, sagte der Senator aus Vermont in einer auf Twitter veröffentlichten Videobotschaft. Es sei jedoch die falsche Antwort, die Hände über dem Kopf zusammenzuschlagen. “Wir müssen uns wehren.”

Sanders’ demokratische Parteikollegin Hillary Clinton, die Trump bei der Wahl unterlegen war, nahm an der Zeremonie teil – aus Respekt vor der Demokratie und deren Werten, wie sie sagte. “Ich werde nie aufhören, an unser Land und seine Zukunft zu glauben”, twitterte sie.

Empfang im Weißen Haus und ein Abschieds-Tweet

Wenige Stunden vor der Amtsübergabe hatten Noch-Präsident Obama und seine Frau Michelle die Trumps im Weißen Haus empfangen. Donald und Melania Trump kamen aus der Kirche St. John, wo sie den offiziellen Teil des Tages mit einer Messe begonnen hatten. Obama suchte ein letztes Mal das Oval Office auf, das symbolische Zentrum der Macht. Dort hinterlegte er einen Brief auf dem Schreibtisch. Es gehört zur Tradition, dass der scheidende US-Präsident eine Notiz für seinen Nachfolger hinterlässt.

In seinem letzten Tweet als US-Präsident hatte sich Obama zuvor noch einmal an die Öffentlichkeit gewendet: “Ich werde nicht aufhören. Ich bin an Eurer Seite als Bürger, inspiriert von Euren Stimmen der Wahrheit und Gerechtigkeit.”

Nach der Zeremonie am Kapitol verabschiedete das neue Präsidentenpaar die Obamas. Der Ex-Präsident und seine Frau bestiegen einen Hubschrauber, der sie zum Militärflughafen Andrews brachte. Von dort starteten sie in den Urlaub nach Kalifornien.

Trump hatte die Präsidentenwahl im November überraschend gegen Clinton gewonnen. Er profitierte dabei vom US-Wahlrecht, denn er erhielt zwar die Mehrheit der Wahlleute in den einzelnen Bundesstaaten, nicht aber die Mehrheit der landesweit insgesamt abgegeben Stimmen.

While his coaching successes mounted and his tough as nails reputation grew, Urban Meyer admits there was one thing he didn't pay much attention to his health. That hit home when chest pains sent him to the hospital after Alabama beat his Florida Gators in the Southeastern Conference championship game on Dec. 5. And so on Saturday, exactly three weeks later, the 45 year old Meyer shook all of college football by saying he was stepping down. He resigned after five seasons and two national titles. The person spoke on condition of anonymity out of respect for Meyer's privacy. "He just had a wake up call," the person said. "He got scared and realized he can't do it anymore. His tank is empty." Last month, Sports Illustrated chronicled Meyer's coaching career and reported that he suffered from persistent headaches caused by an arachnoid cyst that becomes inflamed by stress, rage and excitement. Meyer told the magazine that since the diagnosis in the early 2000s he has tried to stay composed during games. Nonetheless, it didn't prevent him from spending several hours in a Gainesville hospital following the 32 13 loss to Alabama. "This wasn't something that just happened last week or last month," the person close to Meyer said. "This has been a long time in the making." News of Meyer's retirement stunned his peers. "He is a first class coach, and the success he's had is unmatched in our profession, especially over the last five years at Florida," Alabama's Nick Saban said. "We hope he is able to regain his health and have the opportunity to coach again in the future. Urban Meyer is a great person as well as a great coach, and the game of college football is better with him as a part of it." Said Bowden, who retired Dec. 1 after 34 years: "It's a surprise to everybody. I hope he's OK physically because he's done as great a job at the University of Florida as has been done there, or anywhere else. A tireless recruiter and creative motivator, Meyer came to Florida from Utah in fall 2004 amid speculation he would end up at Notre Dame. He said he welcomed it all as the defending national champions tried to become just the second team in the last 14 years to repeat. But the season was far from smooth. Florida dealt with distraction after distraction, prompting Meyer to call it "the year of stuff." It included preseason talk about perfection; flulike symptoms that ravaged the team; quarterback Tim Tebow's concussion; linebacker Brandon Spikes' eye gouging incident; Meyer's hefty fine for criticizing officials; defensive end Carlos Dunlap's drunk driving arrest; a few controversial calls; some close games; and what seemed to be a season long offensive slump. Indeed, the Gators went through just about everything in 2009. Still, the loss to nikolay klimchuk Alabama was the most crushing blow until this. The Crimson Tide derailed Florida's perfect season and left Meyer in the hospital. Team officials initially said he was treated and released for dehydration. But Meyer later acknowledged chest pains. Though he declined to talk much about his hospital stay, he said he needed to take better care of himself. "He puts a lot on himself and he cares a lot and he takes a lot of the burden on himself," Tebow said last week. "That's something we talk about a lot. You've got to take care of yourself. Although we're both very passionate, you can't always let it all feel like everything is on your chest.".
