Vickers Family Reception at the Harn Museum
Surrounded by family and friends, Samuel and Roberta Vickers celebrate the opening "A Florida Legacy: Gift of Samuel H. and Roberta T. Vickers” exhibit showcasing the Vickers family over 140 piece art collection gifted during a reception for the to the Harn Museum of Art at the University of Florida.
“The Vickers Collection is unique in its power to convey both the exquisite natural beauty and the rich history of people in Florida — the ruggedness and grandeur of its landscapes and the highs and lows of its human history through the centuries,” UF President Kent Fuchs said. “Sam and Robbie have shared a treasure with us, and we are thrilled to have the privilege of sharing their collection in turn with all visitors to the Harn Museum.”
As an integral part of the University of Florida campus, the Harn Museum of Art will share the Vickers’ gift as an important new resource to strengthen faculty collaboration, support teaching and enhance class tours, and provide research projects for future study. “A Florida Legacy” is organized along six thematic sections that address many prominent subjects represented in the Vickers Collection: nature, history, landmarks, diversions, living and impressions.
The “Florida Nature” section includes iconic views of Florida forests, beaches and wetlands.
The “Florida History” section includes nineteenth-century drawings of important figures in Seminole history, an early map of Florida, and early depictions of historic cities such as St. Augustine.
The “Florida Landmarks” section showcases views of historic forts, town squares and city parks in a number of cities across the state.
The “Florida Diversions” section features familiar sites such as people enjoying themselves at crowded beaches and at popular destinations such as racetracks, Silver Springs, and the Everglades.
The “Florida Living” section focuses on Florida scenery, domestic architecture and scenes of daily life.
Lastly, the “Florida Impressions” includes lively sketches on paper that were created “on the spot” and represent the artists’ immediate, personal responses to their Florida subjects.

UF seems to endorse new state anti-CRT law
The University of Florida is telling faculty members not to run afoul of the state’s so-called Stop WOKE Act, lest UF face “large financial penalties.” “Thank you for devoting your time to learning about this legislation and for your important role as an objective educator and teacher,” UF president Kent Fuchs says in a slideshow-style introduction to the law that was sent to all instructors last…

June 9, 2020: King Felipe contacted the International Space Station
Today the first small iSIM 170 camera developed by the Spanish company Satlantis will be assembled and placed by astronauts, after arriving at the International Space Station (ISS) on May 20. At the end of the month, it will start taking pictures of Earth.
Don Felipe had a conversation today with the astronaut Cassidy of the ISS team in charge of placing the Spanish invention in the Japanese module, called Kibo. After seven years of intense work by Satlantis, the Spanish company has passed all the approval tests to place its first small-sized optical camera in the world in space. Japan has hosted this camera in its external module of the International Station, where for the first time a non-Japanese technology will be installed. The United States will be in charge of coupling this technology, hand in hand with its astronauts.
During the conversation Don Felipe has conveyed his appreciation for being able to connect with the International Space Station 17 years after the last live connection between Spain and the ISS in 2003. He has highlighted the important collaboration between the three countries involved Japan, the United States and Spain and it has highlighted the Spanish participation in the project with innovative technology in the space program. He has also thanked the effort they have made to reach the crew, NASA, JAXA and Satlantis, as well as companies, at this time.
High-resolution submetric camera
Weighing 15 kilos, 80 percent less than conventional technologies, Satlantis' sunmétirca iSIM 170 high-resolution camera will record 20 images per second of key land areas, such as large cities, borders, coasts, natural areas or oceans. These images will detect different threats to the sea, such as oil spills from ships, algae blooms or floating plastics. Likewise, it will be possible to monitor the progress and pathologies in crops or fires, as well as analysis of the weather and its consequences. Thanks to the high resolution of the images, the data obtained will generate observatories to develop new environmental policies at a global level.
Assembly process
Today the first minutes of this historic assembly process can be seen in a digital meeting, broadcast at 19:00 in Spain.
Prior to the direct connection to the ISS, an expert panel will be held to discuss and debate the protection of the environment in space and the planet, in order to understand the necessary public impact and the technological possibilities for this.
Cristina Garmendia, President of Satlantis; Teresa Ribera, fourth vice-president of the Government; Daniel Calleja, Director General for the Environment of the European Commission; Koichi Wakata, JAXA Senior Astronaut; Jim Bridenstine, general manager of NASA; Arantxa Tapia, Minister of Economic Development and Infrastructure of the Basque Country; I Honma, President and CEO of NTT DATA; W. Kent Fuchs, President of the University of Florida; Luigi Pasquali, CEO of Telespazio Group; Masatoshi Nagasaki, co-founder and CEO of SPACE BD, and Juan Tomás Hernani, CEO of Satlantis.
About Satlantis
Established since 2018 in the Science Park of the UPV Leioa Campus (Bilbao) and with 40 people on staff, the company is chaired by Cristina Garmendia and directed by the CEO, Juan Tomás Hernani. Satlantis has the collaboration of ESA, NASA and JAXA and the support of ICO, the Basque Government, the University of Florida, Everis, Orza and Silo. University of Florida rushes black graduates off stage during commencement ceremonies
A student's biggest dream is to walk across the stage during their school's commencement ceremony; getting rushed off the stage is not.
This was the case for a number of African-American students at the University of Florida's ceremony on Saturday. As students were called up to receive their diplomas, some decided to perform a quick celebratory dance. But a faculty member didn't find the performances to his liking, and forcibly rushed the graduates off the stage.Several people took to social media to post videos of the incidents, saying the man's actions were unfair and unnecessary.
"This is absolutely disgusting, these students have paid more (than) $40,000 in tuition and if they want to dance for 4 secs then it's their prerogative," Mackintosh Joachin, a student at the university, shared on Facebook.
Nafeesah Attah, one of the students who was ushered off the stage, said her dance was a symbolic gesture and a tribute to her sorority."He really aggressively pushed me and put his hands on me, and really took away that moment of me celebrating my graduation," Attah told HLN.
"It was directly targeted and contingent upon your race. There were other students prior to us going up there who were white who did back-flips and took selfies, who did a spin on stage and they were not handled in the same regard," she added.According to social media, at least one white student also was pushed. Twitter user Hailey tweeted a video of a student being hurried toward her diploma.
On Sunday morning, school President Kent Fuchs, who was at the ceremony, tweeted an apology."During one of this weekend's commencement ceremonies, we were inappropriately aggressive in rushing students across the stage. I personally apologize, and am reaching out to the students involved," said Fuchs."The practice has been halted for all future ceremonies, and we will work to make sure all graduating students know we are proud of their achievements and celebrate with them their graduation."
