this is the site of a warzone
ok so this flexing banyan tree is the ugly ass new school mascot. (btw the old new college school mascot was the empty set/“null set”, literally it was { }. and i think that tells you about the nature of the school before the desantis hostile takeover. my kind of place)
last semester one of the returning students at this dorm put a lgbt sticker over this fugly tree. the lgbt stickers kept being torn off or replaced duck season rabbit season style by the desantis era students. apparently after 8 back and forths they stopped like a month ago and this is the result

If you were an academic, would you remain in a state which is willing to prosecute you if you deviate from the governor's political line?
With the start of the 2023-24 academic year only six weeks away, senior officials at New College of Florida (NCF) made a startling announcement in mid-July: 36 of the small honors college’s approximately 100 full-time teaching positions were vacant. The provost, Bradley Thiessen, described the number of faculty openings as “ridiculously high”, and the disclosure was the latest evidence of a brain drain afflicting colleges and universities throughout the Sunshine state. Governor Ron DeSantis opened 2023 with the appointment of six political allies to the college’s 13-member board of trustees who vowed to drastically alter the supposedly “woke”-friendly learning environment on its Sarasota campus. At its first meeting in late January, the revamped panel voted to fire the college president, Patricia Okker, without cause and appoint a former Republican state legislator and education commissioner in her place. Over the ensuing weeks, board members have dismissed the college’s head librarian and director of diversity programs and denied tenure to five professors who had been recommended for approval.
Essentially, the DeSantis education gestapo is killing off the institution — or at least making it very unattractive to students to the left of Mussolini. Of course it's not just NCF that's been affected.
The new laws have introduced a ban on the funding of diversity, equity and inclusion programs at Florida’s public colleges and universities, withdrawn a right to arbitration formerly guaranteed to faculty members who have been denied tenure or face dismissal, and prohibited the teaching of critical race theory, which contends that inherent racial bias pervades many laws and institutions in western society, among other changes. In the face of that and other legislation backed by DeSantis and Republican lawmakers that has rolled back the rights of Florida’s LGBTQ+ community, many scholars across the state are taking early retirement, voting with their feet by accepting job offers outside Florida or simply throwing in the towel with a letter of resignation. [ ... ]
The prevailing political climate in Florida has complicated efforts to recruit qualified scholars from outside the state to fill some vacancies. Kenneth Nunn served on a number of appointment committees during the more than 30 years he spent on the faculty of the University of Florida’s law school. He said the task of persuading highly qualified applicants of color to move to Gainesville has never been more difficult under a governor who, earlier this year, prohibited a new advanced placement course in African American studies from being taught in high schools. DeSantis came under renewed criticism this month when the state department of education issued guidelines recommending that middle school students be taught about the skills slaves acquired “for their personal benefit” during their lifetimes in bondage.
DeSantis is so fond of slavery that every public college and university in Florida is now an anti-woke plantation run by a DeSantis overseer.
Degrees from public educational institutions in the state may henceforth be looked upon like those from Trump University.

New College of Florida was a safe haven for me as a transgender student. I spent 19 years growing up in the conservative Midwest, constantly being reminded of how my differences made me less than others. My high school teachers would start class discussions about the legitimacy of transgender lives and bodies, almost always met by the students around me with disrespect for queer people. My doctor had come to my doorstep, my own home, telling me that I was wrong and sinful for trying to seek out gender-affirming care through him, which would be the catalyst for my suicide attempt at 16 years old. In the year of my high school German teacher's retirement, he targeted my trans peers by giving them letters explaining why they were Godless for their decision to transition, with each letter including candy and a DVD about religion. I knew two trans kids in school who would end up killing themselves from bullying. Throughout all of these injustices I've experienced, no one has faced repercussions.
When I finally graduated high school, I was excited about the possibility of leaving the state for somewhere more accepting. I found a sense of actual community at New College of Florida, where I was looked at and treated as an equal despite my gender identity. New College is known for its openly queer and outspoken student body, and after years of having no friends, New College is the place where I finally developed a friend group that I felt understood me.
Just as soon as I had found some semblance of community, it was ripped from me. Towards the tail end of my first year, the governor of Florida had begun to specifically target New College in hopes of changing the culture of the student body, both scared of Florida's honors college being associated with leftist ideas and wanting a college takeover as a chip to gamble in the upcoming presidential election. Ron Desantis has passed multiple anti-LGBTQ laws in Florida, has banned gender studies and critical race theory, and has openly made it clear that we -- queer students -- are no longer welcome on campus. From tossing dozens of books out of our campus library to painting over student-made murals, Desantis' team as our new administration is actively trying to push out queer students from New College.
New College offered both queer and non-queer students an alternative and accepting education that is hard to find anywhere else. Even with offers being made to help New College students such as the Hampshire tuition match program, many students can not afford to leave Florida, especially without the amazing scholarships, financial aid, and other general opportunities that New College has provided its students in the past. These types of anti-LGBTQ laws aren't just happening in Florida. Without active resistance to conservative education reform, there will be fewer and fewer spaces for transgender students to feel welcome and safe.

OC-tober Day 7: Rest
(This is also in the NCF-verse, but this one follows NCF Prime, consisting of the gang's mains. In this AU, Bori was not the only prisoner Gorothúl took in Instance: Mazog. Léonys and Elirianen were also captured. Léonys was rescued during Instance: The Exchange, but Elirianen was rescued at the same time as Bori. This snippet takes place shortly after that.)
(I have been trying to write this lullaby at the end on and off for years for a different fic and last night I got in the shower and it basically wrote itself in seven minutes. I'm so mad.)
Nothgar is warm, almost too warm, but it is preferable to the bitter winds that sweep across Thangulhad, that even the tents of the Malledhrim do little to protect against.
And it is most likely the best place for Elirianen, whose hand feels bitterly cold to you even now.
She is less pale, you think, than she had been when you had found her in the dungeons, barely conscious and chained to a post, but perhaps that is simply because her armour has been removed and her face has been washed and now she is bundled in light green blankets. There had been few hurts to her body, the healers had said, bruises and scrapes and a number of cuts of varying danger, though only one of these was of particular concern, a deep wound in her side, most likely a stab wound. Whoever had done it must have been familiar with the style of armour she wears, or lucky, as it had slipped between two plates and cut deep.
Of more concern to the healers is the mental assault she had weathered. They can provide few details, but for the fact that a Nazgûl was involved. But they also assure you that she will recover in time. For the moment, she needs rest. (And so do you, someone had admonished, and he is right; you have not slept in many hours and everything aches.)
Bori and Bróin sit nearby, talking quietly. Bori also seems the worse for wear, and he sticks close by his cousin's side. Not far away stands Sigileth. She had watched over Elirianen with you for some time, but something has been growing over her and now she stares into the fountain in the middle of the room and broods on it. Healers and other prisoners rescued from Dol Guldur mill about the room as well, but overall it is quiet. Too quiet, you think.
Elirianen had sung to you, in the dungeons, when you had been lost in a haze of poison and pain. Much of it had been in Elvish, and you barely remember it now, but it had been a comfort greater than you could have imagined. You run your thumb across the back of her hand and squeeze it again, gently but firmly, and begin to softly sing. It is simple; the lullaby that Lady Hackberry had sung to you as a child, and the other children, and which you sometimes sing to the younger children to calm them. You don't know if she can hear you, but if she does you hope that it brings her some measure of comfort.
The shadows are creeping, the stars are ablaze, The birds are now sleeping, the herds no more graze. Sleep now, my dear one, until morning’s light. Your troubles will wait ‘til the end of the night. The wind’s in the treetops, the mist’s on the rise, The darkness so heavy weighs down little eyes. Sleep now, my dear one, ‘til the sun’s in the sky. Your troubles seem smaller when morning is nigh. The rain, it may pour down, the thunder may crack, The lightning may shatter the night sky so black. Sleep now, my dear one, until the day breaks. While you lay slumb’ring your troubles will wait. Troubles may come, and troubles may go; Troubles you’ve heard of, and ones you don’t know. But sleep now, my dear one, between dusk and dawn, And your troubles you’ll face in the light of the sun.

. . . what former president Bernie Machen of the University of Florida referred to as a “little jewel in the state of Florida”—was no more. What remained uncertain was what would replace it.

The big change envisaged by the NCF is the tilt towards the holistic delivery of education, including school environment and culture. “This is a huge leap forward and demands massive re-imagination of the education cadre,” says Ashish Jhalani, Head of International Markets at Square Panda India. Here's our response to the pre-draft of National Curriculum Framework.

OC-tober Day 6: Echo
(This is set in the NCF-verse, an AU created by myself, @aurore-parle-de-ses-idees, @hallothere, @sweetearthandnorthernsky, and @pursuer-of-hope where all of our mains do the epic together. Meanwhile, there are a bunch of other OCs running around doing various sidequests and the like. This group consists of my Hathellang, Thalion's Rani, Hal's Miranwin, Fey's Adanel, and Isi's Larabell. Yes this is a five-man fellowship with three burglars, what about it.)
(Anyway, those mammoths are freaky quiet. I completely missed them the first time I ran this instance. Maybe they're illusions too, who knows.)
"Léonys?" you ask, and the figure before you does not answer. Your skin crawls as she looks at you -- directly into your eyes and yet not meeting them, somehow.
"Thank goodness you have come," she says, and her intonation is odd, as if the words are being said out of order. “I have been scouting the area. The path forward is this way!” Then she turns and runs towards the passage furthest away. You ought to know better, really, but you follow. When you turn the corner after her, she is gone, and nothing lies before you but a closed gate, black and out of place in the ruin.
"Hathellang!" Miranwin calls out, and you hear her quick footsteps close behind you. You turn to reassure her that you have seen the illusion for what it is and come to no harm, though the sight has left you disturbed.
"Saelinriel?" Adanel says, and whatever you had meant to say dies on your lips. Where the vision of Léonys had stood another apparition stands now, of a young woman with long dark hair who carries a sword and shield and a bearing that reminds you, in some ways, of Miranwin, albeit younger, for lack of a better word.
When she speaks, the words sound even less natural than they had in Léonys' voice, if that were possible. "Thank goodness you have come. I have been scouting the area. The path forward is this way."
This illusion -- you guess of Adanel's sister -- runs forward, towards the passage nearest the entrance to this hall. Adanel follows, but Rani, who is still standing near the door, steps towards the passage and you think you can see on her face the moment the apparition vanishes.
"Thank goodness you have come," says a third voice, and you do not recognize this man, but he wears the greys and greens common to the Rangers, and Túgonn's brow creases at his appearance. "I have been scouting the area. The path forward is this way." The man runs toward the central passage. Larabell's hands tighten as she looks to Túgonn, and then back at the passage.
"Wait!" Miranwin calls suddenly. "They're splitting us up!" But even as she speaks, ominous laughter echoes through the chamber and six gates slam open; the three that the illusions had led you two and three others, across from them. Three monstrous mammoths thunder into the hall -- how you did not hear them before you do not know -- and there is nothing for it. Miranwin leaps back just in time to avoid being trampled. There is no rejoining the others now; the only way out is forward. Both of you turn and run.
