Rick was so focused on catching Prime that he just started mixing his feelings together. All that anger and sadness over loosing Diane and Beth just got mixed in a mass of rage for Prime. He just decided to stop thinking about them and how much it hurt to think about them and focus all that rage and all that pain onto Prime. Prime could take it. He deserved to take it. So when he finally finally catches up to him, he gives it back. All of it. Every tear, every sob, every night waking up alone, is a punch. It’s payback and it’s vengeance and it’s terrible. All in all, I found the season 7 finale quite upsetting in terms of the relationship Rick and Diane showed.

I got the impression that for most of the series we are watching Rick constantly grieving. Sometimes he forgets and lets himself be absorbed in the moment, and other times he relives Diane's death.

We have seen many times in the series how Rick loses himself - whether it's going to be all around drunk or in a more self-destructive way. I don't think it's until season 7, or more specifically the last few minutes of Fear No Mort, that we see him begin to work through this grief and find a new purpose after killing Rick Prime.

That's why I felt sorry for Rick.

I wanted to draw him happy with Diane before everything he had was taken from him.

I have a few au's, but here only two-

First one is about Evil Morty, which simply continues his story after breaking the curve. He finds another dimension, there's no Rick at the moment (he died a long time ago). Btw, Diane is still alive. So, basically he's just chilling there

Second one is based on similarities between Diane and Annie, the girl from the first season (I doubt there's any meaning in the actual show, but it's fun I think). I mean, she must be somewhere in the dimension the Smiths has moved in.

The best Jerry's also there, as Jessica and Morticia
