right so, i have had a Super Fun week archiving 40 years worth of actual paper author contracts for work (kill meeee) + sorting last minute biz for little sissas wedding. subsequently I have only squeezed in a few rewatches over the last few days, and am generally existing on caffeine and fumes, so there’s absolutely nothing of substance coming outta this head rn. but! regardless! some incoherent Thoughts on some eps from my one semi-functioning brain cell under the cut
previously on the bad show......... daniel: you look good man! you look hot, sorry i mean sorry you still, sorry- got you got that- you still got that great ass, sorry, i mean you look fucken edible, sorry i mean sorry i wanna kiss you johnny: [takes this personally for some reason] //there is no kissing and everyone is mad about it//
Tumblr media
1x04 -“the 15 inch, that’s a nice machine” makes me laugh every time. ahh yes indeed the 15 incher. Yes. That one. Almost as good as the 250 GBer. i know about computers. what are the other staff in this store DOING -kinda home of sexual that billboard thing huh? you working through some stuff jlawz? i love the idea of him not only drawing a 5 meter long paint dick on daniel’s face, but also his karate pamphlets trailing behind him all the way like drunken breadcrumbs -i just need you to know that i laughed at every single dick joke in this episode
-gonna skip right past the poop thing i think -and kyler’s 30 year old HS friend -daniel reacting a normal amount to graffiti on his billboard, nothing to see here. he’s fine he’s fine he’s kicking drinks outta peoples hands he’s ruining livelihoods he’s fine -tom cole definitely voted for trump both times -i cannot tell you how angry i was the first time i watched this and that jlawz big “no do overs” speech was revealed to be directed at carmen and miguel. sir i know you got trauma but try that hard with YOUR ACTUAL SON please -daniel: that’s too bad :D that you broke up with kyler :DDDD really sorry to hear!! [is happiest babygirl alive]
1x05 -do some yoga jlawz, it’ll be good for you!! -oh no robby buying pizza for his ma. he got the one she likes. baby boi :((( -gonna scoot past the lynne stuff but i repeat, i’m glad they pumped the brakes on this shit in later seasons bc this aint it!!! -daniel raising the rent on poor folks and then deliberately going to johnny to rub it and/ or his wealth in his face is objectively some supervillain nonsense, but if they wanted me to not like him in this scene maybe they shouldn’t have made him look so hot. i’m very shallow and dumb and he look sexy when he mean -“i guess sam takes after her dad.” kyler’s a gronk but credit where it’s due, that was a sick burn.
-okay daniel talking to miyagi at his grave > cleaning out the dojo > going back to karate > panflutes > hachimaki etc made me do an embarrassingly big cry. my brain is not in any shape to verbalise this rn but something about him fucking up, realizing it and heading to a cemetery and talking to miyagi all vulnerable like that really did a number on my feelings, especially coming right out of the tkk movies rewatch. he misses him so much ;_;
1x06 -boooo kreese sucks, even in flashbacks and when I can’t see his face. -“my dad hates [daniel larusso’s] guts” ok was jlawz just talking about daniel constantly the full 30+ years?? no wonder robby is mad, if every time he actually saw him he was like “hi dad!” and dad launched into an hour long rant about one guy from high school he interacted with a total of four times and three of those four times was him beating him up -demetri is a big vibe. love my beloved garbage disaster man, but pretty sure if I met him irl i would pretty quickly be like ‘ok buddy, for sure! yeah strike hard totally. anyway…. [already out the door] seeya!!’ -daniel asking everyone to do karate with him including his employees trying to fill that miyagi void is such an understatedly sad part of this episode. my old mens both so sad. ilu please go to therapy -miguel and sam are freaking adorable awkward babies and i would die for them -robby trying to use daniel to get back at his dad and then instantly imprinting on him is so funny. being charmed by daniel larusso is in the genes somehow -(not to be shallow ((is shallow)) but daniel looks so baby in that bit where robby comes to the house) -you know that scene in not another teen movie where they’re like “oh my god she’s wearing glasses! and overalls! and her hair is tied back!!”? the Hawk scene gives that in reverse vibes. like GASP, he gelled his hair!! and put on skinny jeans!!!
1x07 -it’s a montaaaage! -miguel no offense my sweet summer child but do not ask jlawz for advice on romance. his idea of courting is just obsessively brooding about them for 30 years and then when he finally sees them again stomping on their foot and running away -daniel being like “it was a solid business plan!” (re little trees) is so so daniel. i am gonna chew my own arm off i love this bouncy little pretend guy so hard -the UST in the committee meeting is off the charts. please stop looking at each other like that in public (also daniel being like OH GIMMIE A BREAK when jlawz said ‘kreese is dead’ is honestly the funniest thing in all of season 1. maybe the entire series) -i’m getting ahead of myself, but the golf and stuff montage has made me think – it’s kinda weird that they went with ali and jlawz going there in s3, right? idk miguel and sam is a cute little parallel to the movie, but A & J going there seems…. strange to me. although not any stranger than anything else they’ve done re: the original movie ig? hmm.   anyway! weird thought to end things on, but sometimes it do be like that. will resume normal rewatching transmissions on the weekend. might even have an actual coherent thought or two on something after I catch up on some sleep! i have high hopes

watching tos for the first time since like, roughly 2012/13-ish? i don't remember what year it was, or why i only got thru most of season 1 before stopping
it's been fun to refresh my swiss cheesed memory with this tho so here's a semi-liveblog of the first 10 eps that i watched over the past couple weeks
1x01 - the man trap
things i remembered beforehand:
salt monster
"plum" uwu
that gay little run and crawl jim does when he's taking cover (it fills me with such delight)
things i did not remember:
how many people died, good god man it's only the first episode
1x02 - charlie x
things i remembered:
jim's bright red exercise pants
that stupid fucking face charlie makes when he uses his powers
not liking this ep at all when i first watched it, possibly due to me being around the same age as charlie at the time
additional thoughts: i enjoyed it more this time and felt more sympathetic for charlie. poor kid needed some parents, and also, like, a hug
1x03 - where no man has gone before
things i remembered:
bones isn't in it :'( (bored) (sad) (missing my bestie)
"James R Kirk"
that post i saw on here recently about how their contacts were made of glass
the only thing i could think about while watching:
their contacts
were made
of GLASS
(yes i understand this was how contacts were made back then. still freaked out by the concept of people putting glass in their eyes on purpose)
1x04 - the naked time
things i remembered:
sweat disease
sulu fencing
oh kathleen
"ONE-MORE-TIME!!"
"love mankind"
spock breakdown (extremely uncomfortable to watch)
bones casually ripping jim's shirt sleeve to jab him in the arm (extremely hilarious every time i think about it)
did not remember:
anything about them almost crashing into a planet lol
jim's little monologue when he gets infected (lmao)
time warp???
additional thoughts: hey remember when they reused this plot in tng and tasha and data fucked (<- literally the only thing i can remember about it) ((edit from future fex: i rewatched that ep. it was wild. tos did it better tho))
1x05 - the enemy within
things i remembered:
unicorn dog :)
evil kirk and poor little meow meow kirk
"I'M CAPTAIN KIRK!!!"
things not remembered:
dog dies :(
evil kirk's killer eyeliner
additional thoughts: say what you will about shatner / his acting but this ep is Peak shatner performance and a lot of fun to watch. he put his whole pussy into it, as the kids say these days
1x06 - mudd's women
things remembered:
could not forget harry mudd if i tried
the women are color coded like the powerpuff girls lol
they're also like, on some kind of drug that keeps them looking young or something
cool costumes tho
i don't have much to say about this one lol, harry's a fun character but the rest of the ep wasn't super interesting to me. did finally learn how to pronounce "ophiuchus" tho so i'll thank it for that
1x07 - what are little girls made of
things remembered:
is this the penis rock episode (it is)
uhhh i think kirk gets put into some kind of spinny machine that makes androids (he does)
more cool costumes (debatable)
things i find funny:
the number of planets we've encountered so far that are populated by like. 2-4 people
the way ruk (the big guy) just picks up and throws kirk like he weighs nothing
so much buildup with kirk and the penis rock and he doesn't even get to hit ruk over the head with it smh
also not a funny moment but i liked the way kirk was able to get a message to spock thru the android kirk, v clever
wait i just realized bones wasn't in this ep either. deducting 1/4 of a star from my mental rating bc i missed him (but apparently not that much)
1x08 - miri
remembered:
planet of children (bc everyone else died of terminal puberty)
"no blah blah blah!"
bones tests his newly discovered, untested cure on himself, in true mad scientist fashion (also spones moment <3)
saw this ep on a "what's your fave 'bad' episode" poll here recently and i can't remember if i thought it was good or bad when i first watched it lol
forgot:
another earth?? there's just a second, identical earth floating around out there?? and (of course) they don't mention it at all for the rest of the episode
300 year old children
oh these kids are so much more annoying than i remembered, however i may just be biased bc i don't like kids shfkshfk
1x09 - dagger of the mind
remember:
absolutely nothing! oh boy!
thoughts:
wow this ep is fucked up!
okay actually i don't think i've seen this one at all before?
usually there'll be moments that jog my memory but the only thing even slightly familiar to me was kirk going "helen don't go!" while in the neutralizer chair, but i could've just seen a clip/gif of it before
i remember skipping episodes in season 1 (i was impatient and wanted to get to city on the edge of forever) but i thought i'd at least made it to halfway thru the season before skipping any
anyway did i mention this ep is fucked up? (star trek really does love to drop an absolutely haunting 50 minutes of television on you and then never address it again, i understand this now. roll credits!)
1x10 - the corbomite maneuver
remember:
uhh
there's a thing out there
it's in the way
preventing them from boldly going, even
looks like an old windows screensaver
i might've skipped this ep too now that i think about it
thoughts:
cute mckirk moment in sickbay :3
i love that this cube has its own theme music whenever its on screen
oh shit it's the sequel to cube: orb
jesus christ that's a big orb
man they really said "okay we've got 3 music tracks and we're gonna get our money's worth out of them"
i gotta say this ep slaps tbh—WAIT HE'S A BABY???
LITTLE BABY MAN
LMAOOOOO
honestly great episode tho i'll stand by that

A reflection on season 1
Going into this rewatch, I really wanted to challenge my old opinions of it (specifically the opinion that s3 takes what was best about s1 and improves it) and see if I could walk away with a new perspective.  I know that there are plenty of fans who believe that there’s something special about s1 that hasn’t been recaptured in following seasons, so I also wanted to identify what it is distinguishes s1 from the rest of the series and decide, as objectively as possible, if it truly is the best season, as many have claimed.
To get to the point: no, this isn’t the best season in objective terms.  It has flaws and weaknesses, just like the next two, but I definitely notice a big difference in the overall feel of the show compared to s3.  In this regard, I can understand how personal preference might sway viewers to prefer one over the other.  It’s far simpler in its concept, so it ends up just being a show about some normal theater kids putting on High School Musical.  Its simplicity allows for some moments to breathe a bit more than s3 does (though I think the 10-episode season helps), but there’s also a lot more awkwardness and emptiness between moments in the earlier episodes.  I was really surprised at how slow the first few episodes felt to me, and it wasn’t until 1x04 that I felt as though the show was going somewhere.  My personal feelings on this are largely due to Nini’s storyline being the focus in those first few episodes, and it’s not until Ricky’s struggle with his home life (which I would consider the emotional core of the show) gets more focus that things felt like they were starting to move.  There’s a clear shift in the direction of the show in 1x05 (and in my opinion, a shift towards something much deeper), but the show doesn’t fully commit to this shift through the rest of the season.  This shift is threefold: the positive progression of Ricky’s growth from his relationship with Gina, the expansion of character focus beyond Nini or Ricky, and the reveal that Nini lacked a sense of true identity in her romantic relationships.  The direction of Ricky and Nini’s arcs are never resolved, and they’re actually regressed by the conclusion of this season.  While I believe this is intentional, the framing of the conclusion is still trying to evoke a sense of celebration and triumph, making the conclusion feel really manufactured and jarring when it stands on its own.  This is why, after my first viewing in 2019, I didn’t rewatch the season until s3 aired... it simply cannot effectively stand on its own.  I’ll get to my opinions on how it compares to future seasons in those analyses, because I do have more to say on that.
Something very interesting I wanted to point out: Gina is always shown to offer the consolation and comfort Ricky is looking for in Nini, and when Nini has the opportunity to give Ricky emotional support, it’s shown that she doesn’t understand his struggle.  Throughout the entirety of 1x04, every person Ricky turns to for comfort are incapable of giving him the emotional support he needs, and this includes Nini.  The emotional poignancy of the episode is that the only thing that can make Ricky feel safe is returning home to his mom and listening to HSM, signaling that theater is becoming a new safe space to him.  This is notion is made deeper in the next episode, when Gina, to his surprise, empathizes with him in a way no one else had.  In 1x07, Ricky wants to call Nini after Todd answers the phone, but Gina shows up and offers him the comfort he was never expecting.  Then in the last 2 episodes, we see Ricky frantically try to contact Nini after Todd shows up, only for Gina Porter to give him the consolation he needs and also successfully encourage him to show up for his cast and walk back into the gym.  In 1x08, we see Ricky’s eyes light up with surprise for a moment when Nini says “I get it,” when he apologized for his behavior on Thanksgiving, but her next lines reveal that she actually doesn’t get it at all.
Last comment: I was shocked at how little Gina was actually in this season.  EJ actually leads more plotlines than she does, technically making her more of a supporting character (even though her character arc is much stronger than his, imo).  She is the antagonist the first 4 episodes, so she really only has focus when she’s disrupting Nini’s storyline or scheming with EJ.  Then, she becomes the character to further Ricky’s growth and storyline for the rest of her appearances.  Despite her appearances being more limited, her presence is so strongly felt this season, which I think really speaks to Sofia Wylie’s screen presence and strength as an actor.  Honestly, not a single minute is wasted with her screen-time.  It's seriously to the show’s benefit that she becomes the female lead in the following seasons, because her character was already upstaging others.  I honestly think Sofia’s performance is what gave Gina so much depth and richness in s1, so she is without a doubt the MVP of this season.

Just rewatched 1x04 “Dogs” and here’s what I got for ya :D
Carmy’s “It’s on me now,” when talking about the debt Mikey and Richie put The Beef in, he doesn’t want to get into it being “his brother’s house,” it seems like everything there leads back to Michael, and that’s how he likes it, but he never wants to talk about it
“Name one cohort, name an associate” is one of my favorite lines lmao
Carm seems especially hot tempered in this bit, maybe because he doesn’t want to be catering a kids party, maybe he’s just not doing great after Mike’s birthday
“I answer to Jeff, the system” I love how T has incorporated Carmy into her idea of how The Beef functions, at some point he became part of the system :]
Carmy going to Cicero’s old address both shows how much everything has changed while he was gone and that he very much didn’t have the energy to keep track of any of it
One of the big displays of how the Berzattos want to be listened to but never listen to each other is the Cicero vs Richie argument, they’ve been at each other’s throats over a simple misunderstanding for 5 whole years
I need the “how she fell down those stairs” story please please please
I’m sure we’ve seen the post about the Mr Szorski (?) and how if someone heard “one of the Berzatto boys committed suicide” their head would easily go to Carmy instead of Mikey and… yeah ow
People should call Richie “Dick” more, it’s literally his name
“Richie what the fuck is that?” Carmy asks and you can almost hear his stomach drop in his voice when he sees the Xanax, also, this in combination with the “is there a name for that thing where you’re scared of a good thing happening because you think something band’s gonna happen?” “Life?” Starts to feel like Richie does genuinely have anxiety shit, and Carm’s “Who doesn’t?” Creates an interesting dynamic between them, they’re both really fucked up and reassuring the other that it’s completely normal
Gotta love Carm’s brag of “homemade Ecto-cooler motherfucker!”
And Chester’s “it’s this radiant orchid that’s fly as fuck”
There’s also the post about Marcus blowing off his work for the donuts because he thinks that level of dedication is what Carmy wants and the 1x07 breakdown mostly being the result of miscommunication, and yeah, Marcus’ “I want it to be perfect, like that plum” contributes to that
“You have given Marcus a lot of confidence, well done” from Ebra to Syd is so sweet omg
When Carmy has to go inside the party, he asks for ketchup from anyone and everyone, trying to get out of there ASAP
I think one of Carmy’s biggest love languages is words of affirmation, ie: Pete saying he worked at the best restaurant in the world (and that’s not an exaggeration), plus Pete telling him later about following his career and stuff, and suddenly Carmy likes Pete now
Jimmy goes “that fuckin kid” and Richie just says “that kid” in a way that feels detached, pretty much any time Richie talks about Mike, it feels like he’s just stating facts and trying to keep his emotions out of it as much as possible
Pete (loml) being so insufferably awkward <333
But also him being so sincere and “she also really missed you a lot too,” Carm’s been completely bombarded by his family yelling at him and I can only imagine how nice it was to hear that
Unless the cross got stuck by his coat or something, Carm’s necklace is just a gold chain
Cicero isn’t Italian, but he’s still related to Carm’s dad
“When was the last time you saw him?” And “he never lands” both point to him being alive (at least that they know of, this is a reckless guy that was last seen 20 years ago)
“Drugs, alcohol, gambling, mostly because he insisted on doing stupid fuckin shit all the time” Carmy’s eyes looks up from what he was doing to look at the picture again and I have this thought that this is him going ‘hey, that sounds familiar’ and Jimmy starts talking about Carm’s dad hopping careers and Carm knows for sure that Michael was a lot like his dad
“I’m in there for 5 minutes, I start thinking about bad shit” “I think that’s why I like it so much,” he’s not someone who avoids reliving his traumas, he’s always trying to take what hurt him and regain power over it, and now, we know he’s aware of this pattern of his
I think the kid in Cicero’s dream was Carmy. I think he really tried to look out for the Berzatto siblings, but the other two were already affected by their dad’s presence, unlike Carmy who just saw his absence, but Cicero always tried to put on a brave face and offer a helping hand to Carm. They seem close
“Taste it and tell me it’s shitty,” I don’t think Tina’s ever had that level of effort and care required of her in The Beef, and now, she’s terrified that when she really, truly cares, it won’t be good enough
But it is, and her “Thanks Jeff… Chef” means the world to me
Carmy isn’t good at articulating his thoughts, but sometimes, he’ll figure out his own methods of non-verbal communication, like his point to Marcus, and I think Marcus does get his intended “I care, good job Chef, I love to see you improving” from it
So I think that is all!

Oooookay. So I finished my seventh watch through of season 2 yesterday and I finally feel equipped to give my personal ranking of all 18 OFMD episodes. No one asked for this but here it is lol. Also I gave them all a score out of ten and tiered them all by said score because I'm very normal. LET'S GO.
6/10 - These Are Kinda Meh
18. 1x02: A Damned Man - To me, this is the most forgettable episode of the whole show. I mean, it's not awful or anything (it's still OFMD), but I have literally nothing to say about it. It's just kinda there.
17. 2x06: Calypso's Birthday - There's things in this episode I like (everything with Ned Lowe is good imo), but the whole party sequence, which takes up about half the episode, feels so empty to me. At first it didn't bother me that much, but then Samba revealed what the original plan was and knowing that at one point this episode had a plot has made the incredible lack of one we got soooo much more noticeable.
16. 1x03: The Gentleman Pirate - Introduction of Spanish Jackie, Magic Man, Ed and Stede meeting for the first time, there's definitely good stuff here. However, it gets sooooooooo much better than this.
7/10 - Good and Fun, Just Not My Fave
15. 2x07: Man on Fire - There is so much in this episode I like. Ed and Stede having breakfast in bed makes me feel insane. Stede and Zheng fighting ruled so hard. FRENCHIE SCHEMEING WITH THE CREW!!! The biggest thing is that there's so much in this episode that nothing really gets room to breathe. With like…five more minutes this episode could've been peak.
14. 1x06: The Art of Fuckery - This falls under the category of "episodes that are good, but there are others I like way more". The bathtub scene is of course peak, but in a season with some really incredible stuff this episode doesn't particularly stick out to me.
13. 2x04: Fun and Games - Same as the previous episode. I love the whole "Seabird" sequence, Ed and Stede's little heart to heart, and of course Anne and Mary's everything, but there are so many more episodes I love way more.
8/10 - I'm Incredibly Fond of These
12. 1x07: This is Happening - Fun fact I originally had this in the last category but then I remembered the co-captains scene and I knew I had to bump it up lmao. There's soooo much peak OFMD in here. The snake scene! Lucius calling Ed out!!! The previously mentioned co-captains scene!!!!! The only reason this isn't higher is because around my…fifteenth rewatch I found myself kinda getting bored with the Jim's nana subplot (sorry Jim).
11. 1x01: Pilot - OHHHHH I AM SO FOND OF THE PILOT. There's definitely some clunkiness in this episode imo (it is the first one after all), but the feeling I get when I boot up this episode is unparalleled. Frenchie starts singing and my heart soars. Also the entire "High on a Rocky Ledge" sequence is beautiful even all these months later.
10. 1x08: We Gull Way Back - 90% of my love for this episode is that I find Will Arnett very funny. This episode also gave us "The Chain" sequence including the foot touch heard around the world. ALSO ROOM PEOPLE!!! I love this one.
09. 2x01: Impossible Birds - The biggest fault of this episode is that it premiered alongside two of the best episodes of OFMD ever and this one slightly pales in comparison. That being said, it's a very strong season opener. Also, I am personally obsessed with the "Strawberry Letter 23" sequence. AND THE CAKE TOPPERS I CAN'T BELIEVE I ALMOST FORGOT THE CAKE TOPPERS!!!!!
08. 1x04: Discomfort in a Married State - I AM SOOOOOO FOND OF THIS ONE. The way the first half of the episode parallels Ed/Izzy and Stede/Mary only to spend the second half juxtaposing those two relationships against Ed/Stede? Masterful. The way Ed and Stede's relationship develops so naturally? Beautiful. THE LIGHTHOUSE SCENE? INCREDIBLE. WHAT AN EPISODE!
9/10 - I'm Genuinely Mad These Didn't Make Top 5
07. 2x05: The Curse of the Seafaring Life - The way this episode had me giggling and kicking my feet in real life after I first saw it. There's nothing not to like here. Ed and Fang fishing, Lucius and Pete getting engaged, THE SUIT…all incredible. Not to mention we got "you wear fine things well" version 2.0 with the best kiss in the whole show!
06. 1x05: The Best Revenge is Dressing Well - I love everything about this one. Ed and Stede at the fancy party, Lucius kicking Izzy's ass with the power of polyamory, Frenchie and Olu scamming racists…when I think of quintessential OFMD, this is the episode I think of. And of course the original version of "you wear fine things well" lives within my very soul.
10/10 - I Feel Mentally Ill About These Ones
05. 2x02: Red Flags - To start off, I really liked getting Lucius back and his whole subplot with Stede was really really great. Now that that point's out of the way HOLY SHIT EVERYTHING WITH ED IN THIS EPISODE WHAT THE FUCK. THE SCENE BETWEEN ED AND IZZY IS LITERALLY GOD TIER. ED PAINTED THE BRIDE TO LOOK LIKE HIMSELF AND I STILL HAVEN'T RECOVERED. "RUN FROM ME"? LIKE...IN GENERAL??? CRAZY. AND THEN ED SAYING "FINALLY" WHEN HE GETS THE CREW TO KILL HIM? INSANE. THEY WERE INSANE FOR THIS.
04. 1x09: Act of Grace - I mean, listen. I've talked about this a lot but it bears repeating. Staying up until 2am to watch this episode when it premiered and seeing Ed and Stede ACTUALLY KISS changed me as a person. I am different because I experienced that. Not to mention the rest of this episode is peak. Ed calling for the act of grace, the crew voting Olu as captain, the entire "Perfect Day" sequence, just incredible all around.
03. 2x08: Mermen - God this show can do a good finale. I will never stop being bowled over by how much I love this one. The "Moscow" scene? Sexy as hell. Ed and Stede reuniting and Ed telling Stede he loves him? I've watched it three thousand times. THE LETTER? THEY WROTE THEIR NAMES ON EACH OTHER IN PERMANENT INK!!! Also, even though it's highly controversial to say, I thought Izzy's death scene was very very good. Not to mention the entire last few minutes set to "The Times They Are A-Changin'" makes me feel so incredibly soft. I love OFMD soooooo much.
02. 2x03: The Innkeeper - Listen. If this whole episode sucked but it still included the mermaid scene I would still have it this high. That being said, this whole episode is sooooo incredibly good. The opening sequence with Zheng manipulating the rival captain is so well done. Ed in the gravy basket is crazy from beginning to end. Stede plotting to get the crew to safety is peak Stede and I love it. And somehow, after all of that, the episode also ends with one of the most incredible sequences I have ever seen. Watching a man who thought he was fundamentally unlovable get brought back to life because of how much he's loved while "This Woman's Work" plays in the background will follow me forever. Just…some of the most beautiful shit ever put to film.
1000/10 - THE GOAT NO OTHER NEED APPLY
01. 1x10: Wherever You Go, There You Are - I AM SO SERIOUS WHEN I SAY THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVOURITE EPISODES OF TELEVISION OF ALL TIME. The way Ed and Stede's plots through this episode are juxtaposed against each other makes me feel feral. The way that Stede is so out of place and closed off from his family while Ed is actively healing and bonding with the crew ONLY FOR THESE TWO PLOTS TO FLIP WHEN THEY EACH TALK TO THE PERSON WHO REPRESENTED A NONFUNCTIONING RELATIONSHIP TO THEM ALL THE WAY BACK IN EPISODE FOUR! THE WAY MARY AND STEDE GETTING TO TALK AND BE HONEST AND LET EACH OTHER GO ALLOWS STEDE TO FINALLY GROW AND BE HAPPY WHILE IZZY HANGING ON TO THAT TOXIC RELATIONSHIP WITH ALL OF HIS MIGHT AND NOT LETTING ED GROW AND CHANGE WITHOUT HIM FORCES ED BACK INTO THE PITS OF DESPAIR!!! The entire "Avalanche" sequence breaks my heart in the absolute best way and seeing Ed do all this terrible shit with no more spark left in his usually super expressive eyes hurts so good! And then, of course, there's my favourite part of all. Seeing Stede, a man who has been so lost and unmoored, row out into the ocean looking more settled than we've ever seen him while Mary says he's now free and that freedom coming completely from Stede realizing he's in love with another man is something that feels so personally assuring to me I can't even fully express it. The entire "Miles from Nowhere" sequence is incredible to me (and to this day that song is thee OFMD needle drop in my opinion) but that part especially is my favourite thing this show has ever given me hands down. Thank you David Jenkins for my life.

Bellarke and leadership
something i wanna talk about now that I’m rewatching s1 and perhaps awfully late realizing for the first time is the part about leadership and especially when it comes for Bellamy and Clarke to take up on those roles.
While yes, it’s true that when Clarke comes down, she tries to take charge and make the others listen to her, I don’t believe she’s in an absolute leadership position, not even when they decide to banish Murphy in 1x04. It’s interesting for her because the progression that’s happening there for her is a bit different-she loses her dad, then she’s locked up, then she comes to earth where she does try to take care of the people but in fact just kind of gets caught up in some personal problems. The first of which is the one with her mom, dad and Wells-it takes some time figuring out what happened there. The other one is a newly created problem that is Finn, falling in love with him, then Raven coming down and her having to first swallow down her feelings for him and then save his life and keep doing that for the good of him and Raven as she can see how much they mean to each other.
In other words, I don’t think she fully assumes the role as a leader until 1x07/ or maybe I dare say 1x08 where she 1st-decides to agree on torturing Lincoln for information which is a big step, a leader step where the decisions weigh on you and it’s not just maps and runnign around trying to find Mount Weather or being in the weird dynamic place beteween an old friend who’s in love with you and a new guy who’s interested in you.
She actually takes a step towards real leadership there and later absolutely fills in those shoes when she meets Anya.
But What I want to talk about here is Bellamy. I believe he assumes the real leadership position at first and carries it on a bit longer before Clarke joins him in. That is of course, a product of the circumestances-he has taken charge a long time ago when his mom put his sister in his hands and told him she was his responsibility. She makes him name Octavia and take care of her, promising to keep her quiet and safe. The whole reason why we were lucky enough to have a Blake siblings flashback was, I believe, because of that-showing where it all came for for Bellamy but not just the understandting behind his current actions (aka taking off the wristbands for his love for his sister) but also why he fits in the leadership position from the moment they hit the ground.
He had already been a parent and a leader for the past seventeen years. With a mom who made sure she did just enoug hto survive but offered no love, he had to fill in a gap between Auora and Octavia, while putting himself away from experiencing what a real family was in order to take proper care for his sister and please his mother.
When he comes to the ground he tries to ensamble his people, then convinces them taking off the wristbands is good for them (even though he is indeed trying to save himself here FOR Octavia, a part I think people forget often), he surrounds himself with people he trusts but also helps built this camp-organizes the delinquents to build a wall (remember 1x04 “If it wasn’t for her, those idiots would still be building a wall” when he talks about Clarke saying the truth about Wells;), He quickly realizes what’s good for the people-the truth and omitting it in the case with Charlotte because it will safe them in this unstable situation; He cares for them which is shown when he goes out to look for Octavia and Roma and Mbege die. (I hate when ppl say he only started caring about the delinquents later-he did, from the beginning), he went hunting with them, made them work on rations, etc.
He also makes some very big leadership mistakes-the first one being hanging Murphy and the second one-throwing the radio away in the river when Raven lands. Now that second one is a really big and very heavy decision, one that Clarke if you think about it doesn’t get to make until the end of the season where she agrees on Raven using the hydrozyne to kill the grounders. Yes, he does make it so he can save himself but his personal decision weighs on the whole camp because if the rest of the Ark doesn’t come down, how do they survive. The whole conversation with Jaha in 1x08 where he hallucinates him just proves all that. While for Clarke it’s her dad she sees and misses, Bellamy is the one already beating himself up for mistakes akined to someone who’s ruling and leading. (and who feels the same amount of guilt the council on the Ark does, aka the parallels between Kane and Bellamy starting here)
Then there comes Lincoln and I think that’s the moment that kind of glues Bellamy and Clarke as leaders which is concluded in 1x08 when they bring the guns back home and it’s quite clear and established who is in charge of those kids.
That is where they take their first big decision together (yes, I scartch Murphy because while he was a hard choice, he was one of them, he made mistakes, a kid died because of him and banishing him was the only thing they could figure out at the moment but Lincoln is an outsider, a grounder, the enemy. And this is their first time trying to decide how to deal with that.) You could see how new in it all they were, how uncertain-they argue and they do not want to do any of that. They are both mentally torn-you could tell so by the looks in their eyes but they’re also fighting with the new reality-the one where the world is cruel and those people out there already killed 10 of their friends and what is there to do?
What is the RIGHT thing?
And all of that was solidified in the last conversation they have in 1x07 where Bellamy picks her hand holding the screw he put in Lincoln’s hand and he says “Who we are and who we need to be to survive are very different things.” I believe this is the first time he’s being honest with her, basically screaming ‘I am not this person, I am not a killer, I’m not a torturer but I have to be this now. For my sister. For us. Do you understand?” but she’s lost herself and doesn’t know what to respond so he adds, shyly, almost as if he didn’t want to give himself away “It’s not easy being in charge, is it?” because he already HAS been in charge but now she truly IS too. Finally, in that moment.

For what it's worth, given that we're talking about September 2023 - I'll gladly join you in a stacked rewatch for The 100. I've tried to rewatch in order and it's just impossible for me now, but I think the air date method is a really novel way to mix it up. Count me in! (In ten months, lol.)
I often find myself missing the ~energy of this fandom (read: exclusively that of my mutuals in my little dash <3), so if any of you joined me I'd love it! I do want to rewatch the show eventually, but like you, thinking of a regular rewatch... eh. But this way is a lot of fun and can lead to really interesting findings IMO.
(in particular, I think a rewatch of this show, knowing all I know in hindsight, it's going to make Clarke a more enjoyable protagonist for me LMAO)
The (tentative) idea would be start in October 22nd 2023 (in part so I have time after finishing stackediaries lol), with the second season's premiere. That way, we'd finish on September 30th (2024) with the proper series finale. I'm c&p how the schedule would look under the cut:

Jess Watches // Mon 23 Oct // Day 34 Synopses & Favourite Scenes
Lupin (avec maman) 3x04 Chapter 4
Assane meets his mother's captor in the flesh, but there's no sign of her. Tasked with another all-or-nothing heist, he makes a devastating choice.
I really didn't think Assane would go through with the captor's demands. How did he not have another exit strategy for his best friend/ partner in crime?? But I did love Claire snooping in the library. She's getting warmer.
Derry Girls (rewatching with mum) 1x04 Episode 4
Erin is so excited that teenage Katya 'a child of Chernobyl' is coming to stay, but Katya is not exactly grateful to be in Derry; there are developments in Granda Joe's love life.
Whigfield and Gina G played in the same ep. What a treat to 90's baby me. I can just about remember the dances. Also, felt very validated by Orla's choice of sweets, Fruit Pastilles, and her obsession with the chocolate fountain.
The Consultant 1x07 Elephant
Patoff continues to meddle between Patti and Craig. Elaine prepares to carry out a wild publicity stunt per Patoff's insistence. Craig and Amy track where Patoff goes every day but wind up with more questions instead of answers.
I was so relieved Patti wasn't in the portaloo, but then dreaded finding her tied up the basement. But she was just click clacking away on his typewriter?? What even is this show lol
Sin huellas (No Traces) 1x02 Basura
Desi and Cata try to give the Russians their money back, but they want something more: their heads. Desperate, they ask Irene, the cop handling the case and Desi's ex-girlfriend, for help.
[frisks you in spanish]
The Uncanny Counter 2x12 Episode 12 (Season Finale)
The Counters give it their all to fight the mighty Pil Gwang. Will Ju Seok be able to overcome his demons and put an end to this life-or-death battle?
I'm so happy they retconned Ms. Chu diminishing her lifespan every time she heals someone because she had lots to do after the big fight. Were the baddies at the end the stunt doubles for the main cast? If so, that was a very cool nod to their hard work this season. And the counters looked very dapper in their suits.

OBX details that make me feral (14/?)
How Rafe's introduction and characterization parallels JJ's
So I’ve already ranted and raved here about how JJ’s true character unfolds throughout the first half of season 1, and I think the writers use a very similar formula for Rafe as well (and maybe that’s part of the reason why they’re both such effective and compelling characters)
Starting off kind of one-note but with one particular moment to spark interest
I already talked about this in the other post about JJ's characterization, but basically in 1x01, JJ starts off as the impulsive, witty, maybe kinda dumb and annoying comic relief character, and then the “nothing to lose” speech suddenly hints to much more depth. We pretty quickly get the sense that there’s something else to him as a character.
Rafe starts off as the spoiled rich brat archetype, the black sheep of the family who dabbles in cocaine like every other white rich 19 year old. But even in literally the very first moment that we see him in 1x02, where he’s joking about Sarah getting electrocuted with a straight face, we can see that maybe there’s something a little off there.
Tumblr media
But then he’s back to being your garden variety rich bitch for a bit, so you’re probably just left storing that little moment in the back of your mind, but the point is that it lingers. Just like how JJ’s vulnerability during the “nothing to lose” speech latches onto this image of an otherwise archetypal character, the “little fried Sarah” line does as well, just ever so slightly (or even subconsciously) changing the way you read his scenes moving forward and generating interest for his character right off the bat.
More hints pile up
For JJ, these hints come through passing mentionings of Luke, his heightened fear response to the square groupers raiding Lana’s house, his attachment to the gun, and most obviously when he tells the story about Luke threatening to hit him to the security guard. For Rafe, these hints come through his enjoyment in jumping Pope at the country club in 1x03 despite Topper trying to get him to stop,
(if i knew how to make them, this is where i'd put a gif of Rafe laughing while slamming the golf club right next to Pope's head)
his excitement when Topper almost kills Pope at the movie night in 1x04,
Tumblr media
and him screaming at and threatening Sarah when he’s trying to get her to give Barry’s money back in 1x07.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Through these subsequent moments, we slowly see how Rafe is much more than just an irresponsible rich kid with some validation issues. As external stressors continue to push him, we see the underbelly of his volatile anger and just how deeply his daddy issues run in order to create this mess of emotional dysregulation in the form of one Rafe Cameron.
I feel like JJ and Rafe kind of unfold in opposite directions. With JJ, we see his anger first, and then we see everything else and the reasons why he is the way he is. With Rafe, we see someone whose brattiness seems relatively harmless on the surface, but then the full extent of his anger (and jealousy and immaturity and urge to be loved by his father, etc.) shows its face again and again until it finally culminates in him shooting Peterkin.
I just really love how Rafe is developed throughout season 1, and it's such a joy to rewatch, just like JJ's development.
(I probably could’ve formatted this differently in order to really dive into all the parallels between Rafe and JJ, cause there really are a lot of them, but it’s just easier to handle it piecemeal like this. I know for a fact that there are more parallels in season 2, so I’ll just try to freak out about them as they become most relevant.)

Every time Merlin has saved Arthur’s life : a list (that I’ll complete as I rewatch the show)
“Do you think I sit around and do nothing?! I haven't had a chance to sit around and do nothing since the day I arrived in Camelot, I'm too busy running around after Arthur - do this Merlin, do that Merlin - and when I'm not running around after Arthur, I'm doing chores for you and if I'm not doing that, I'm fulfilling my destiny - do you know how many times I've saved Arthur's life? I've lost count - do I get any thanks? No - I have fought griffins, witches, bandits, I have been punched, poisoned, pelted with fruit, and all the while I have to hide who I really am because if anyone finds out, Uther will have me executed. Sometimes I feel like I'm being pulled in so many directions I don't know which way to turn!”
Merlin saves Arthur’s life from the singing witch (1x01)
Merlin activates the snakes in Valiant’s shield so everyone can see the knight was using magic to kill his opponents in the tourney. (1x02)
Merlin enchants Arthur’s torch to defeat the Afanc, protect Arthur, and undo the spell that was poisoning Camelot’s water. (1x03)
Merlin drinks poison from Arthur’s cup and dies before his heart restarts (1x04)
Merlin saves Arthur from drowning and being sacrificed as an offering to the Sidhe. (1x07)

I’m so far gone I’ve done a rewatch already in the past couple of days and these are just my little notes on things I loved especially or noticed for the first time:
1x04 is still just so good. This time I especially loved their convo when they were waiting for the kid to come out of the Top Dog, and then when they saw him and his girlfriend Allison was like “ah yes, a real professional relationship” and Patty goes “oh, so you’re funny all the time now?” And her watery, plaintive “Allison?” when they get pulled over. Also this is from ep 2 but I love that the sandwich board sign outside of Patty’s salon just says “it’s not gonna cut itself.”
Soo much stuff in 1x05, starting with like there’s something weirdly sweet about Patty’s conviction throughout that Allison can’t do it, even though that is like the normal thing you would think about most people you know. “You’re just havin’ a time” made me smile! I do miss the east coast sometimes. And after her calling Allison wallpaper: “ugh, are you mad at me now?” “Yes. No…” Why is this so cute to me? But most importantly after Allison asks if Patty wants to do something stupid with her, and Patty blows her off, and after she walks away, I totally forgot that Allison kicks that pot down the stairs. Like babe do you want to examine that reaction at all? Not to mention, I hadn’t thought of it this way before, but Allison asking her out is like almost directly followed by Tammy asking her out in the next scene. Patty and Allison in the quitting scene are of course golden but special shout-out to “watching you work is making me thirsty.” And in the scene with Patty and Nick outside her house, I just noticed you can see the remains of the Kevin Hart banner still hanging off the side of Allison’s house, four years later.
I love the confrontation in the kitchen—first off because Allison is so happy that Patty came to see her, and secondly because Patty did not have to offer the oxy back to her. She could have just given them to Nick and told Allison it was for her own good. But she didn’t. She gave them back and asked Allison to choose her. And Allison did!!!! What the fuck!!!!
The porch convo where she gives the pills back to Patty is so good too. Patty says “thanks, though” so softly. Allison asks “you think I can pull off big and violent?” the same way you might say “you think I’m sexy?” because she’s a little freak.
From 1x06 while they’re in the massage chairs, Patty: “It feels like hands are reaching through the chair to squeeze my neck!” Allison: “I think I like it.” Voted most suggestive foreshadowing 2022.
1x07 Patty drilling Allison on answering police questions just reminded me how I love when Patty snaps at her, but more importantly it lets us know that Allison has told Patty about her scone and a book fantasy. “Can’t you just let it be hard?” Is such a good scene and Patty immediately wants to talk to Allison after. And the tub scene is still so sick and twistedddd how did they even find that version of the song with the perfect longing little croon at the front? Also, Patty then goes to Tammy’s house, but the next morning they’re at Patty’s house looking like they slept there, so why didn’t they stay at Tammy’s? I guess I’m glad they didn’t though, because that morning scene is one of those times I like when Patty actually seems like Neil’s little sister, which has something both a little sweet and a lot sad to it.
1x08 I would have liked to see the scene of Patty rushing over after the gunshot, actually. I loved Patty’s “you make plans and god laughs…and then he kicks you right in the balls.” But I love even more “everything happens for a reason”/“okay, you would hit me if I said something like that.” And “what have we said about swearing” there’s that “we” Patricia!!! “Oh, honey, you are not a broad” is one of my favorite lines, sleeper hit. Allison sitting on the arm of the chair that Patty’s in is a classic. And The Argument is still beat for beat perfect in case anyone was wondering. God, that fierce little face Allison makes after she says “without you…” when she drops her eyes. The soft way Patty says “what?” when she steps forward, not hopefully but in that taut, carefully blank way that comes from desperately trying not to hope. Chef’s kiss!!! Also I love that after storming off Allison immediately starts to angrily clean.
2x01 is suchhh a bonkers and stressful episode so we must take our gifts where we can, like the Lisa Fazzolari story (which is GREAT information, thanks Neil) and “you had your hands on her.” Also, the moment after they watch the ad and Kevin and Pete leave, when Allison starts to giggle but then it kind of changes and she just ends up full-body trembling, great moment. And we finally see The Seas, which (I was checking) is neither the bar Kevin frequents (I think that’s called Kelly’s?) nor the bar that Allison and Patty met at. I like how the drunk driving is like a compact little representation of where Allison is and has been operating from: killing herself in the least efficient and most irresponsible way possible.
2x02 I first must say that Patty faceplanting on her bed and then the little pout she does when she realizes she has to get up are the cutest things on earth. And “guests are blessed and deserve your best” gets me again because like you KNOW Allison had to have said that like fifteen goddamn years ago the first time Neil and Patty came over after she moved in (to…an apartment? Pete’s house? Oh my god, did Kevin pressure her to move in so he could afford moving out of his parents’ house?)
And you know Allison said that with one of her dumb hopeful little smiles, and I like to imagine Patty just like short-circuited in the face of all…that and said like “well if the beer is this warm at your best I’d hate to be here on an off day” or something equally awful but still about warm beer so that Allison also gets to remember something dumb she said for fifteen whole years.
Patty looks so adorable in the scene outside with Neil, I think partly because he’s so much bigger than her. And the bit at the end Sam and Allison’s scene, about his uncle being dead, when Allison goes “GREAT!!! I mean NO I’m so sorry!” I love it. The scene with Allison and Kelly—I mean obviously A Lot is happening here but mostly I think it’s so funny that Kelly is so like distracted by seeing her that it takes her a minute to ask why Allison is in this random backyard in the dark. And then after talking to this girl she definitely used to make out with at parties who reminds her of lots of things she’d rather not think about, and having a lot of complex emotions, and watching her smoke, Allison goes over to Patty and immediately tries her cigarette. That’s like A Lot. And I do like the funeral scene. It’s one moment in a very complex situation, but it’s a good moment! And Patty saying “sorry for your loss” to Bram’s sisters on the way out in some way sort of echoes Allison about Sam’s uncle and that’s very funny to me. And just shit! The last scene is great!! Fuck!!!! Patty’s like there is no “we,” I’m done, and then a minute later she’s all “we’re a lot of work” ok trish!!!
2x03, the prince of episodes! Starting with Patty and her night guard, waaahhh. I also want to talk about how much like background storytelling is dropped in on this show. Like first season with Chuck being addicted to the oxy (not wanting Diane to manage his pills —> “did I tell you about how Chuck’s falling asleep at stoplights?”) and then his whole violent stalking thing after Diane left, in this episode specifically where they keep referring to like a serial killer of women??? I think purely for the Halloween of it. But mostly where it interests me is these references to Patty’s childhood and her mother. God I hope we get some concrete stuff about that. Maybe even a flashback! I do also like that this episode, which is so important to Patty and Allison’s relationship, is taking place sort of in a horror movie. Because they both like them. My heart. I feel like I don’t have any other notes for this episode because like nearly every minute of it is noteworthy. I will say, however, that the bar where Allison meets Patty (and Kevin et al) is called The Periwinkle. AND can I just say, that last flashback scene outside the bar? The music IS straight from 2005, right out of like a teen drama where two characters like each other. Undeniable! And when the scene gets blurry Patty actually turns and watches Allison walk down the street. You ever wonder how that night would’ve turned out if, idk, the Lisa situation had led to 18-year-old Patty actually knowing she was gay? Probably not very different actually but still.
2x04! Listen I love that when Patty says “we’re not gonna…?!” she’s almost laughing, like she doesn’t believe Allison would do it even if she intended to. Also there’s that “we” again trish. Aaaand I’m stopping in the middle of this because it’s midnight so it’s time for 2x05 and I’ve just seen this ep.
