She’s not evil at all, just...sad.

5. Jay

While for sure he has a few screws loose, he’s not big on killing or tormenting anyone. He really just likes having fun and doing things for the heck of it. Basically, he’s the same Jay we know and love, except more...eccentric? He does, however, harm people who threaten his crew, or who are ‘bad guys’ in general. Jay’s more of an anti-hero than a villain in this au tbh

4. Cole

Cole is...not exactly evil, really, but he gets more violent than Jay. The best I can compare his personality to would be something of a yandere. He’s obsessed with not being alone, he absolutely hates isolation and will go to extreme lengths to keep people within his temple. As I said, he gets much more violent than Jay gets, so I suppose that could be classified as evil.

3. Lloyd

Lloyd never really turned into a villain because he wanted to be evil, he just wanted to be with his dad. Anyone who threatens his father’s rule gets killed, mainly. Or if someone is annoying him. Basically, he kills more than Jay or Cole. On rare occasions, he kills because he’s bored, but that usually doesn’t happen. He’s not all that sadistic.

Now for the next two, I had to think about the ranking, because Kai and Zane seemed to be tied. And overall, it’s hard to really define what makes a person evil. I’ve just been going by how violent they are for this list, really. But I had to decide eventually, so here they are:

2. Zane

As I said, I put a lot of consideration into this. Bottom line was that Zane doesn’t intend his actions to be evil, or for them to be sadistic in nature. He simply does things because he deems them necessary. However while not with ill intent, I still put him in this ranking due to his lack of empathy. He doesn’t spare people, he kills them simply because they are human. No part of him particularly enjoys it.

I will add that he has the second highest kill count of the ninja, though, because at some point he went on a brief killing spree. Plus he also just kills people he sees as unfit to live, or damaging to society. Now, the moment you’ve all been waiting for, the highest kill count and the top spot on this list goes to:

1. Kai

Yup, Kai is the worst of the ninja in this au. He kills people because he feels like it, and he is sadistic about it. He likes killing, he can get satisfaction from hurting others. Not only that, but he plays with his victims and everyone around him. You never know whether you’re going to be stabbed or given a prize with this guy. Half the time he’s a lot like Chen, the other half of the time he’s furious. This boy has a short temper, and no one is spared of his rage.

While I’m here I shall also add this:

Jay’s favorite method of killing: Walk the plank

Reason: He’s not sadistic, he just wants to stay true to pirate ways

Lloyd’s favorite method of killing: Katana

Reason: It can be quick or it can be slow. It varies depending on mood

Kai’s favorite method of killing: Various, but mainly fire

Reason: He’s a sadist and death by fire is painful

Zane’s favorite method of killing: Skewering with ice

Reason: Precise

Cole’s favorite method of killing: Beheading

Reason: Quick, nearly painless death

Angsty drabble idea: imagine if Zane tried to bring back his lover in nindroid form and ended up losing them instead how fucked up would that be. I bestow this power of angst upon thee Rina, use it wisely.

Oh Revlis this is delightfully angsty. However, I seem to have found...an addition. >:)

The students knew better than to disturb the quiet workshop at the edge of the monastery courtyard. Even if Sensei Lloyd hadn’t forbidden it, they would have instinctively known to stay away.

Lights that never turned off. The constant hum of a generator, even in the worst thunderstorm. A door that stayed locked at all hours.

A shadow that moved constantly, never sleeping, never pausing.

Always working.

New pupils would always ask, either on a dare from those who knew better or out of their own naive curiosity. Sensei’s green eyes would darken sadly, and he’d quietly dismiss their inquisition.

Every so often, the students would stare in awe as the door finally opened. A man would rush out, shouting for Sensei Lloyd. He moved with loud screeching creaks and stiff limbs that some swore were held together with ice. Sensei always followed him with the same hesitant urgency, that sad look hiding behind an encouraging smile. They would enter the workshop and the door would lock once more, followed by a blast of green light.

The courtyard would fall silent.

Muffled voices would slowly filter out of the workshop.

Sensei’s never rose above speaking level, but they could hear how his gentle scolding tone leeched into his patient words.

The man - they never got a name from Sensei - would always escalate in tone and volume.

Eventually the result would be the same; Sensei leaving the workshop with a door slamming shut behind him, blasting the courtyard with an arctic chill.

He would silently tend to anyone who stood too close, and everyone would get hot chocolate and hot soup would be served for dinner that night.

They soon figured out that that was the time to ask, and to send the smallest of their peers to seek answers.

Each time, that sad look fell over Sensei’s eyes, and he stared in the direction of the workshop.

“Sometimes,” he would whisper. “We want for things we cannot have.” His gaze would fall to the mantle overflowing with pictures - birthdays, holidays, weddings. A small collection of lives. “And sometimes...we want for things we lost. And we think that if we do everything right, then surely we’ll find them again.”

He would always go to bed early on those days, his entire being seemingly weighed down.

“But some things cannot be remade, no matter how much we try.”

How COVID-19 Is Reshaping Cities and Inspiring Healthcare Innovation

The coronavirus pandemic added a new concept to our collective, popular lexicon: “social distancing” and “physical distancing.” This was one pillar for the public health prescription we were given to help mitigate the spread of a very tricky, contagious virus.

A major negative impact of our sheltering in place, working from home, and staying indoors has been a sort of clearing out of cities where people congregate for work, for culture, for entertainment, for education, for travel and tourism…for living out our full and interesting lives and livelihoods.

Intel gave Harbor Research a mandate to “re-imagine life in a post-pandemic world,” with a keen lens on smart cities and transportation. Their report envisions a new normal for physical spaces, public transit and commuting, airports, urban infrastructure redevelopment, remote work, and public health.

This is a rich report covering key vertical markets: public safety, transportation, education, transformative tech, smart cities, and health care. In this post, I’ll focus on health care, but the other verticals are all adjacent to health, so I recommend you visit the entire document and learn from the wisdom therein.

I’ve pulled two illustrations out of the report that speak to the way I’ve been re-considering health and especially our homes as health hubs. The first graphic here imagines our work-life balance as we transition from working remotely to life back int he office, leveraging technologies for the various risk-events we would encounter in the experience. These include:

Entry

Getting around inside the building

Working and collaborating

Breaks and socializing, and

Comfort and cleanliness.

This last of the five life-flows is perhaps the most impactful one on our Maslow Hierarchy of Needs pyramids: the need to be physiologically safe from harm — in this case, exposure to the coronavirus in the workplace.

This workplace envisions a contactless/touchless, ever-disinfecting and hygienic environment. Sensors detect fever, face mask wearing, people counting, and fresh air monitoring and circulation.

The report envisions that public health and wellness activities will be at the core of the city’s new normal. Even after a vaccine would be developed, a full return to “everyday life as we knew it before” would be a “strange non sequitur,” Harbor Research writes.

Smart technologies will be more relevant to us humans than ever before in history, the team asserts. Without attending to health, the economic viability of cities will be threatened.

“Data is suddenly on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs,” Adam Beck stated as leader of the Smart Cities Council for Australia and New Zealand.

Some cities in the geographies of Beck’s constituencies, in Australia and New Zealand, are cities with leadership in data culture, as Beck puts it, pointing to Wellington as an example.

Communities that leverage data across a city’s infrastructure and economic sectors have been able better manage the coronavirus pandemic spread, to “crush and contain” COVID-19 as a BCG analysis recently described those nations and regions in the world that have successfully dealt with the pandemic and resulting economic impacts.

The second graphic illustrates economic places where data can/should be collected and aggregated to enable a city to be smarter in dealing with a public health emergency. These are airports, ports, retail, hospitality (hotels, restaurants), schools, public transit, big buildings, and…healthcare.

Underpinning information sharing is the growing Internet of Things embedded in places and spaces, and open standards protocols that enable data to be liquid and mobile.

The report describes applications that take these data in complex applications fusing data from devices, people, and systems — from automated emergency response and dispatching systems, digitized health records, weather monitoring, home voice assistants, and surveillance cameras.

The report includes eight examples of healthcare innovations that fit into this vision including Medical Informatics Corp. Sickbay, Capsule Technologies, Revlis Tele-Healthcare, Medpod Health, Intouch Health, MSI AI-UVC Disinfection Robot, Pudu Delivery Robots, and Savioke Relay.

Health Populi’s Hot Points:  The report quotes both Governor Andrew Cuomo of the State of New York, saying,

“When we reopen after COVID-19, we’re determined to be better for it. That means reimagining our lives. There is never a return to yesterday. Life is about moving forward, taking what you’ve learned and bringing it to a positive effect.”

Governor Cuomo is a member of the Democratic Party.

The report also quotes Senator Lindsey Graham, Republican representing South Carolina. He is quoted asserting that,

“There is no functioning economy unless we control the virus.”

The unifying field theory here is that, cross party-ID, these two political leaders get the fact that public health and healthcare are integral to a healthy economy and growth. Senator Graham is absolutely right in his conviction that the economy won’t function well unless we control the virus.

We are far from there this new month of September 2020, six months into the pandemic. Getting the data and technology aspects right will be one key to nailing the pandemic — but that will also require trust and cooperation. Can stakeholders in U.S. health care, technology, education, politics, civil life, and communities come together as if we behaved like people in, say, Wellington, New Zealand?

If we want our economy and society to function well, we must.
