Product photo research.

For this assignment, I have to produce a professional looking product shot, but not before doing some research about how the product is advertised, what lighting is used, and the photographers within the space of the product. The product I wanted to photograph is a Funko Pop, as a collector myself, I felt I would enjoy learning about the techniques used to advertise them.

The first page I decided to look at belongs to a Funko Pop photographer, Diego Diaz, going by the username @funko.pop.photography on Instagram.

Here is an image from his photography account. He generally includes Funko Pops in environments that would suit their characters. The backgrounds are suite, but they are also kept simple and blurred, keeping the Funko pop in focus, so that the viewer doesn't get distracted. Having the background be an environment can be a nice nod to the fans of a franchise! The shadows in a lot of the pieces can be dramatic, but they aren't to the point where you cannot see the product. This makes me a believe a reflector could have potentially been used to control the lighting. I am a big fan of the background used for this photography.

The name of this photographer is Bianca McKeown, and this is an example of her brand, which she has built through Funko Pop photography. Again, the background is kept simple and the main focus in the figure. The shadows are harsh, but the light allows you to see the face in particular as well as the details on the figure. I feel this use of lighting leaves a very natural look of a setting that the character would be in. The background colour is an orange, which I feel compliments the figure as a whole, and makes it 'pop'. I am a big fan of the characterization incorporated into the design as a result of the lighting and shadows.

This is an example of an image I took from the site "RetroFestive". This is generally how I would see Funko Pops advertised. The lighting is not very dramatic. You can see it behind the characters head when they are in the box, but overall you can see the character very clearly in front of a basic white background. The reason I speak about this, is because I really like the idea of showing both the figure and the box it comes in. I was thinking of using Photoshop to be able to edit both the figure and the figure inside of the box into a final product photography piece.

Overall, I am excited to begin working on this project and experiment with the use of lighting and other photography equipment to make interesting images out of a product shot.
