Azris Week 2024 Prompts & Rules

We are delighted to announce the prompts for Azris Week 2024! Each prompt is accompanied by a few suggestions to help spark creativity. Don't feel obligated to follow the suggestions. We intentionally kept the prompts very open to interpretation this year and can't wait to see where the inspiration leads.

Day 1: Contrasts

The chilled darkness of the night, the warming glow of a fire's light. One spends his life pulling strings behind the curtain, and the other is center stage dancing to several tunes beyond his own. Born to privilege, born to poverty. One's family found, the other's fractured. "Contrasts" is a broad theme, how will you explore it?

Day 2: Familiars

Take it to mean the noun—hounds, shadows, horses, other pets, maybe sentient little flames, companions, friends, family, etc—or expand your interpretation to the adjective and see where it takes you.

Day 3: Contact

How do the heir of Autumn and the Shadowsinger communicate? Through letters or texts, maybe, or through heavy gazes and the brush of fingers on exposed skin. Have they always spoken with each other this way?

Day 4: Free Day

This is self-explanatory.

Day 5: Slice of Life

So much of this enemies-to-lovers ship is full of strife, pain, and betrayal. But what about the quiet moments? Whether in the midst of chaos or with lower stakes, how have they learned to love each other?

Day 6: Changes

What changes? What remains the same? Change for the individual, change for the pair. Think of shifting opinions, a changing world, personal growth, and developing relationships. One of the reasons we ship Azris is our love for their dynamic. How dynamic can they be?

Day 7: Solstice & Equinox

Autumn Equinox, the shift in seasons from light to darkness, a time of harvest and plenty. Winter Solstice, the longest night, the turning point. One can predict that the Autumn Equinox in the Autumn Court is as grand of a celebration as the Winter Solstice in Night. We're closing out the week with a hearty dose of holiday spirit.

1) Be respectful. We're here to celebrate Azris and appreciate the creations made in their honor. This is a positive, inclusive space which won't stand for bashing of any kind.

2) Please direct any event-related questions to this account, not to the mods individually.

Astrology Observations♟

Edit: please note that I’m attempting to be very neutral and I have not stated my personal opinions on her. However, Nicki Minaj is the PERFECT example of the effects of having a Scorpio Midheaven! People are obsessed with her. For better or for worse. The ‘Barbz’ have literally stabbed people, and beat up someone’s mother over her. Whilst, many musicians, and people in general cannot stand her, because they feel like she’s a bully. She is someone who is extremely polarizing. People become unhinged trying to defend her , whilst others enjoy the fact that there are large groups of people who strongly dislike her. This is the result of having a Scorpio Midheaven in a nutshell.

Whilst having Venus conjunct the Ascendant is often associated with “good looks” I actually think that it really helps with your reputation, and how people perceive you. I will use celebrity examples! Selena Gomez has an Aries Moon (this isn’t shade to Aries moons) and her mercury makes very difficult aspects (squares Pluto/ opposes Saturn) Thus, one would assume she’d be controversial or well known for her temper/outbursts & tendency to attract conflict. But the opposite is actually true, anyone who is perceived to be “shading” her immediately gets attacked, as most people think she’s very kind and genuine. Whilst she has admitted that her relationship with Justin was mutually toxic, most people just can’t seem to see her as the aggressor. Her Venus makes a conjunction to her Ascendant. Beyoncé, Rihanna, Anna Nicole Smith,Angelina Jolie are more celebrities with this placement. What I’m essentially trying to say is, people tend to give you more grace when your Venus makes a conjunction to your natal Ascendant.

It’s common to see people who have the ruler of their 5th house placed in the 10th monetize a creative hobby. Their career often involves making use of one of their creative/artistic skills. Working in the entertainment industries is very common with this placement. Working with children in some way, is also a possibility.

Libra on the 9th house cusp can suggest you studied law, political science, or anything that involves diplomacy at college. Alternatively, you could have trained to become an esthetician or a cosmetologist.

Chiron, Pluto, Mars & Saturn in the 11th house culture is rarely feeling as if your ‘friends’ have your best interests at heart. Having any of these planets in the 11th house can be extremely isolating! It can cause you to feel alone, or perhaps as if you struggle to find a group of people that you resonate with (on a friendship level).

A solar return year in which you have many 8th house placements, will be a year in which you experience many “life changing” moments. Most people fear having planets in the 8th house in their solar return, so they opt to travel to a different location on their birthday. However, I feel like this isn’t necessary! Change and transformation doesn’t always have to be viewed as bad! Sometimes we need change to elevate us in life.

A while ago, an Astrologer on YouTube stated that whenever she sees a Gemini rising, or Gemini placements in a composite chart, she automatically thinks there is cheating involved. I don’t know how I feel about this sentiment. She explained that because of the Dual nature of of the Sign Gemini; it more often than not represents a third party, or external influences that are influencing the relationship. I see where she’s coming from, but I don’t necessarily think it’s wise to always interpret it like that. I personally believe the aspects that are being made in the composite chart will tell you a lot more about what it’s likely to occur in the relationship. If there are tons of squares to Mercury, Venus, Neptune, Saturn & the chart ruler, I’m more inclined to believe that there is the potential for deception.

People with Juno in the 12th or a Pisces Descendent, often have a subconscious “savior complex”. They are usually highly compassionate, and might find that they have a tendency to attract people who have been wounded by life or those who lack boundaries.

A solar return year, in which you have planets in the 2nd,8th, & 11th houses, also known as the “money houses” can suggest that you will earn or receive a large amount of money that year. Alternatively, you may experience a significant change in your financial situation. You want to look at the aspects of course! (Trines & sextiles are more likely to manifest positively, whereas the conjunction can go either way).

When transit Uranus makes a square to your Natal Ascendant or Midheaven, those around you may view your newfound behavior as being strange or erratic. You are likely to go through many unpredictable changes during this transit consequently, you will start to experience changes in your personality, which will impact your relationships. You may find that you no longer resonate with the people around you, and abruptly decide to move, or make a change in your friendship circle. This is a very unpredictable time in your life, and your behavior will reflect this.

I’ve noticed that any kind of Saturnian influence over the 1st, 2nd & 6th house can bring about poor body image or restrictive tendencies when it comes to food. For example, having Saturn in the 1st, 2nd or 6th house! Or perhaps Saturn is negatively aspecting planets in those houses. Capricorn over these houses can also bring about a food complex. Obviously not everyone with Saturn in these houses will have a restrictive eating disorder, it’s just an observation so please don’t make it apply if it doesn’t 🤍

On the other hand, a Jupiterian influence on the 1st. 2nd, and 6th house can manifest as binge eating or turning to food as a coping mechanism. This can be having Jupiter in the 1st, 2nd, or 6th house. Alternatively, this dynamic can also occur when Sagittarius is over one of those houses.

Regarding Angst and Ableism In The Submas Fandom

Posts I've made explaining why people get burned out on angst, why certain depictions are ableist and how they can have real life impact on people.

I'm reposting this from one of my posts here, because I want these things to be absolutely clear:

These are not callout posts for, nor posts attacking any art, fics, or person in particular.

I am not responsible for bad faith interpretations or other potential misinterpretations of me addressing these issues that have personally affected friends, acquaintances, and myself, should people choose to make these interpretations.

Unknowingly making ableist content does not make you a bad person. Everyone still has things to learn, everyone has room for change and growth. Self-education and critical thinking are very important here (and everywhere). A desire to correct a mistake, change, and grow from it is better all around than digging your heels in and refusing to budge or listen.

I am also not responsible for the reading comprehension or critical thinking skills of others. If you don’t read the entire post and choose to be reactionary towards it, including making assumptions about what was said or putting words in my mouth, I am not at fault (and I will not respond to/block you).

Making Submas OOC While Using Neurodivergence As A Prop Harms Real People: Again, please interact with the source material and learn about how coding characters works rather than decide every neurodivergent character that gets intense about a hobby is "y*ndere". I am Ruben, but most people call me Bean, and I also go by Ben - so feel free to use any of those names, I'll respond to them all!

I'm 27, Non-Binary, and I use They/Them pronouns. I've been doing art pretty much all my life, and I do it somewhat professionally. I enjoy all types of art, but my mains are drawing and animation - but don't be surprised if there are some crafts or other medias here and there too!

I am autistic, and have severe social anxiety (among other disabilities), so please be patient with me if I take a while to respond, have an under/overreaction to something, or do not understand something right away! I also tend to forget things a lot, so you can always give me a reminder, if it has been a while - just please do not spam me!

I love getting asks about my characters, and AUs, even if I cannot answer them all - I have many askblogs for more specific characters/settings, which are linked below if you wanna check them out!

Please keep in mind that some of my characters are villainous, aggressive or just plain mean, and any actions or responses may be rude, violent or upsetting! When I respond in character, I am just playing a character, and their actions do not reflect me, and should not be taken personally!

DMs I am more hesitant about bc of the mentioned anxiety, so if you wish to DM me, please have a reason to be doing so - I don't tend to respond to just 'hi', and asking for free art will probably end up in a block. I also do not RP at all, so please do not ask.

I tend to vent a lot! I use art as a form of catharsis and to avoid hurting myself irl, so there might randomly be some upsetting content posted, but I do tag these with 'vent tag', and the appropriate CW tags - please see below for them

My art (and characters) is not for free use! So please do not repost, edit, trace my art, and please do not use it in videos/games, or for AI bots/databases. If you see my art somewhere, that I did not approve of, and regardless if it is credited or not, please let me know!

That being said, if you really want to use my art somewhere, please ask first! Usually the use as an icon, or in a silly meme, is fine - just ask first!

I don't do requests for things I am not interested in, and I probably will not draw your OC for free. I do take suggestions for things I am interested in, and might do the occasional art trade with mutuals/friends. I do also take commissions (but my sheet needs a big update, so prices may change soon).

I switch sonas around a lot! Bean is my main one (in a semi-realistic style and a more cartoonish one), but do not be surprised if I am sometimes depicted as a furry or a monster now and then.

These sonas are also both a representation of me, and characters in my stories. I try to define when I am 'in-character' and 'out-of-character', so please keep this in mind when commenting/asking.

Fanart of my characters and AUs is okay, and always appreciated! Please try to represent the characters(s) the best you can, and ask before doing making significant design changes (such as a 'Genderbend' or 'Species Swap' etc). Again, I am forgetful, so if I do not acknowledge it within a week or so, please give me a nudge!

I don't mind minors following, as most of my stuff is SFW, but please keep in mind that I am an adult, and may upload an occasional suggestive post or joke. These are also tagged as needed.

Interests

I am currently mainly into Pizza Tower, and the OCs I have created for it, so that is mostly what you will see at the moment! - I have currently two AUs I am focused on, mainly the one where it's just my interpretation of the game (no name for this one yet), and then my secondary called 'Cheeseshop AU', with Brick the Rat as the protag, and species are swapped! (So Brick is human, Peppino and Gustavo are rats etc)

I also have a lot of original stories, characters and concepts, and will post those too! I tend to jump from idea to idea and back again, so do not mind if I am talking about one genre in one post, and then it completely changes the next post. (Although most are just slice-o-life with fantasy elements)

Other interests are: FNAF (previous hyperfixation, kinda comes and goes and may have occasional posts here), Bugsnax (also a previous hyperfixation, mainly when the game came out but not so much any more), Pokemon (not a hyperfixation, I just think they're neat), and... That's pretty much it, that I can think of! I don't tend to get into fandoms much, and I just focus on one thing for years haha

I am also not really looking for other things to be interested in, so please do not take it personally if I do not look at or get into anything suggested to me.

Okay so, something I kinda wanna talk about since I’ve had this convo a bit on discord in an Aphmau server and just - thought this would be something that could be an open discussion? I know it’s really obvious but I figured an open discussion would be possible for it!

So, I’ve noticed how some races in MCD are coded in certain ways. Most specifically you’d have Meif’wa who I think are meant to be Japanese coded(KC being basically the poster child for that, which is gross given how her character is…You know). And doing further research and looking at it a bit further, I think the werewolves were meant to be Native American coded? I could be interpreting wrong, but that’s been my personal speculation, I am open to other suggestions/insights on the matter!

Those being said however, it kinda gives an ick when you look into how Jess showed/represented these groups: Meif’wa’s being solely Japanese and werewolves, least in the modern era, being shown as generally aggressive and dumb - if I can recall, it was even brought up on different occasions- like in PDH how there was a law in which werewolves couldn’t fight humans when Ein got caught for beaten up Kasey, then on another occasion in Starlight by Blaze how there’s apparently some form of discrimination to werewolves in the workforce???? We were basically brought up to the notion of there being werewolf racism??? We have werewolf racism and then we have meif’wa fetishisation, like this especially being shown with Nana(or as everyone knows her As ‘Kawaii-Chan’….Yeah.) and how she’s depicted in like - the entirety of the series/Aphverse, you also have Michi who is like, less of a racist depiction? You then also have Kai. I’m not too sure if Meif’wa’s also have facial issues shown in the show asides from the clear fetishisation Jess has like she does for werewolves, but yeah, it ain’t exactly good either.

I get Jess’s writing was more so depicted for a younger audience, but that kind of makes it worse when you consider the things she’s shown(Aphmau and Aaron’s relationship in PDH, the incest between Ein and Aphmau, KC as a whole, and probably other stuff I’m forgetting).

TLDR: Jess has a weird/if not low-key racist(?) way of depicting certain races and I do hope Jess realises this and knows and learns from it.

Feel free to repost this lemme know what you guys think if you’re interested, especially if you’re someone who does rewrites! I’m genuinely intrigued on what everyone thinks about this and, say if you were to rewrite the series, how would have you gone about it?

Reposting my Stuck In Heaven rant here because that does not deserve to stay on Twitter. Will warn that I think the logic is a bit faulty and I’ve tried my best to clarify, but I still believe in the general concept of it.

Warning for major spoilers for Library of Ruina and Lobotomy Corporation. (It’s your favorite girl! Of course she does this.)

So like... Stuck in Heaven, that's the placeholder name we got for this guy, right? Since Burrowing Heaven is quite literally one of the Carmen abnormalities, I think it's safe to assume Stuck in Heaven is associated with her as well. That brings up the question: how?

Well, Burrowing Heaven is all about attention. Keep your eyes on me, listen to me, don't look away or you'll miss me- there's a reason Roland called Carmen a cult leader, and that's how it worked in Lobotomy Corp- keep it on the screen or else it'll leave you. From the MD dialogue, Stuck in Heaven is similar but in a more sinister way- at least in the fact that it can actively distort your sinners' perceptions.

"Meaning, you may only see what it wants you to see."

I wish to suggest that Stuck in Heaven is about Carmen's recruitment; specifically, Kali's. Stuck in Heaven is a LOT more personal about attention than Burrowing Heaven is.

"Heaven sometimes burrows; other times, it makes a home in the heart."

Please note that in Stuck in Heaven’s illustration, it specifically goes around where the heart is generally considered to be.

While Burrowing Heaven wants your attention in general, Stuck in Heaven wants your attention so it can use you.

"You are not what the eyes are looking at. It must be heaven somewhere behind me."

I know that sounds like a far stretch, and I haven't even brought up Gebura's dialogue on the matter at all yet; but I interpret this line in particular, especially with the context of how closing your eyes causes it to distort the senses, as the abnormality judging you. If you close your eyes, Stuck in Heaven believes you’re useful and clings onto you. If not, Stuck in Heaven finds you not worth its time. Stuck In Heaven is a parasite. It latches onto people for its own purposes and promises them that heaven is so close, that others can see it, it’s right behind you, why can't you see it?

And THIS is where I bring in Kali. Gebura has brought up the fact her trust has been betrayed before, and also that she trusted Carmen. While Gebura says she knew that Carmen was different, and she was, I was never able to shake off a strange feeling about it.

Carmen's goal as she explained it never came to fruition. That is a discussion in itself of whether or not that was the point, and one I won't get into. But what's important here is that others thought Kali as a legend; they saw her as having reached "heaven." Roland himself shows this with how he reacts to her.

Carmen promised to teach Kali about the Nests, and that all led to Kali helping her for essentially free. So, with all that said; let me explain the correlation. SiH is a parasite that does not care about its hosts; only what those hosts can bring it. The way Carmen treated Kali is akin to that; I don't believe Carmen cared for Kali nearly as much as Gebura thinks she did. But Carmen got into Kali's mind, at least for awhile. Don't forget that Carmen is the voice of the distortion, that she's the inverse of EGO. Whatever Carmen's plans are, as I do not believe we will ever understand completely, Kali was a safety net for her to get there.

And so, Carmen was able to convince her to come along. And so, Carmen was able to recruit her and latch onto her. Just like a parasite. And that's why I think Stuck in Heaven is about them.

Addendum: I don’t think Carmen is heartless- of course not, that goes against her entire character from how I understand her. I think she saw Kali as a friend, but I also think she was using her, if that makes sense. I think another interpretation is that it represents the Distortions and how Carmen chats with people about to distort. Something about how Stuck in Heaven takes over its victim.

Although I prefer fandoms, I'm open to OC x OC as well. Seeking stories with the main themes of romance, bondage/BDSM, and damsels in distress. There are a number of different scenarios that we can play out. I am asking for your female character to be a damsel in distress - often getting herself into situations where she is over her head, sticking her nose in business where it does not belong, etc. It lands her kidnapped, tied up, and in need of a rescue from the hero, her boyfriend/husband. This is not saying your character has to be a doormat or useless by any means. She can definitely be a strong-willed, smart character - which can play a part into why she is always finding herself in situations like these. I am looking to play out scenes where she is rescued before the bad guys can do anything too bad to her, but we can discuss exactly how much happens before the rescue. Her partner saves her, they share some risky intimacy while still in the kidnapper's lair, and escape to move on for their next adventure. Also, if we do fandoms and we are able to incorporate this theme into the fandom rp, that would be wonderful too! If we're doing OC x OC, I would love the chance to suggest potential face claims for your character. In return, you can do the same for my character. Here are some brief plot blurbs:

Regarding the topic of Sign Language in star wars universe.

I unfortunately don't really sign, but I relied on hearing aids and lipreading quite heavily but not perfectly well. It's something I lacked in life for communication and projecting my disability onto OCs for this verse.

Again, this is my personal headcanons for my legacy and everything here are strictly fictional asdfghjkl.

The point is, I know it is common to rely on ASL and BSL as the base concept to use for deaf and mute characters to sign. Personally for me when it comes to deaf characters in my legacy verse, namely Ania and Jazz who are hearing impaired, there are more than two Sign Languages to range from within the galaxy's regions. I find that using ASL and BSL in star wars really awkward because you'll be asking 'where's american/british comes from in star wars???'. I won't be using that for a specific reason.

Ania and Jazz both have hearing aids and implants to help them, but Kritanta and Vowrawn made sure to teach the twins on sign languages under circumstances.

The first one being the Galactic Sign Language, shortened as GSL, which was formerly known as Republic Sign Language but the Senate elected to change it to Galactic for universal purpose. This can be roughly connected with Basic speaking language being mostly common. GSL is the SW equivalent to ASL (american sign language).

Tau Idair in this legacy was fluent in GSL due to one of her parents being deaf. Tau communicated Jazz in GSL within crowded places when she struggled to hear (and hearing aids can pick up a lot of noise frequencies at once, which can be distressing to deal with).

Secondly, with the resurface of the Sith Empire's existence, there is an Imperial Sign Language, shortened as ISL, as opposed to "Republic" Sign Language. It is the main sign language within Imperial core worlds. It is mostly common among Agents and Soldiers to communicate with each others for covert missions or radio silence. ISL is the SW equivalent to BSL (british sign language).

Kritanta and Vowrawn are fluent in ISL due to their daughters being hearing impaired when they found out they were born profound deaf. However, neither of them shy away from learning GSL. Not to mention that Kritanta wore a mask 24/7 for health reasons that hid away the ability for his daughters or anyone else to lipread.

Marr and Jadus were fluent in the knowledge of ISL and GSL the same reason for wearing a mask and communicate with hard of hearing officers. But generally this applies to masked characters who can take up the options of learning basic knowledge. As Ania relied on lipreading the most, Marr and Jadus didn't wait to linger long so they can take their mask off in private to communicate with her.

Thirdly, much like ISL but there's another one used within Imperial core worlds known as Sith Sign Language, shortened as SSL, commonly used amongst Siths or force-users to communicate and possibly talk shit and gossip behind non-force user's backs.

An idea brought to you by darthvronton that I'm including it in this legacy. It is possible that SSL borrows sign words from ISL purposely. a suggestion to take note brought by a friend.

Fourth, not all neutral core worlds like Tatooine or Nar Shadda followed GSL. The Hutts introduced and spread the influence of Huttese Sign Language, shortened as HSL, across neutral aligned factions. This was to go on par with characters speaking Huttese.

Especially the likes of Blizz who may have known HSL because they do communicate for trading. As part of the deal with the Jedi and Republic to keep out of trouble rather than going to jail, Blizz agreed to be an interpreter for the deaf Jedi… which they eventually became Jazz's main interpreter.

Lastly, the fifth being exclusive only to Mandalorians as they invented and translated their language into Mando'a Sign Language, shortened as MSL, for deaf and mute mandalorians without feeling the need to remove the helmet out of privacy.

All in all, I had to avoid using Basic Sign Language for universal use because when you shortened it as BSL, it can get mistaken for British Sign Language. This is why Galactic was a more appropriate choice.

So I see some complaints about the games after Apollo justice, like you gave the spotlight to a new character but then put Phoenix right back in his original spot. I can see how a lot of people who grew attached to Apollo were upset by this and those that were a fan of Phoenix being a mentor were too. I think I have an idea on how a new game could fix this: Lawyer selection!

When a new case starts, you can choose which lawyer will take the case, Athena, Apollo, or Phoenix, each will have unique dialogue, and interpretations of the scene (for jokes, not the outcome), and you can also pick who will help you on the case too! Your partners can be Maya, Trucy, or either of the two Lawyers you didn't pick at the beginning. The prosecutors for the cases are locked in and don't change based on who you play as, this gives us the chance to see how Apollo or Athena would fair against Edgeworth, or Phoenix have a rematch with Klavier.

The person you pick as a partner can also lend you a hand in court, like if you picked Phoenix, he will offer you the Magatama, Athena will use Widget, and Apollo will tell you what he perceives. They all lead to the same conclusions. Maya however is special. Maya will do her usual thing but if you are really struggling during the trial (you go through the testimony a few times or get at least 3 penalties), then there will be a prompt when you talk to Maya that she can summon Mia to aid you, Mia will basically act like a hint system, she'll help you once and if you think you'll be fine for the rest of the trial without her, she will leave and Maya will be back.

I feel like this would be a great idea and you can experience each match-up on different playthroughs, of course, this is just a suggestion but I think it would be a good game and give people a chance to tell their own versions.

As for the story, due to how the characters would be interchanging, it would have to revolve around all involved, specifically everyone that works for the Wright Anything Agency. So I was thinking "Well there were quite a few psychos that got caught and thrown in prison thanks to these people, what if they teamed up for revenge?"

I made a list of the more psychotic killers that would be in this alliance:

Redd White- I'm on the fence about him but I think he'd join.

Damon Gant- he'd still be alive and he's loopy enough to do it I think

Furio Tigre- He's hot-headed so I think he'd want to get some revenge.

Dahlia Hawthorne- she would need to be summoned but it's possible she'd be involved if contacted.

AJ:

Kristoph- obviously.

Alita Tiala- she's similar to Frank and Furio, not hesitant at all to get dirty.

DD:

Florent L'Belle- He legit threatened to kill Apollo, he's demented enough in my eyes.

Aristotle Means: believes his idea of the law is superior, he'd def wanna get rid of those against him.

Phantom- I'm on the fence with him.

SOJ:

Pierce Nichody- he's fueled by hatred and jealousy, and calling Miles and Phoenix tumors def puts him on the list.

I didn't include the Khura'in suspects because they're incarcerated in Khura'in and not Japanifornia. But this seems like a group full of bitter people that wanna see the Wright Anything Agency burn.

Sebastian: Evil or Not?

I am having trouble with Tumblr tonight I wanted to repost a little discussion between @bapydemonprincess @warmmilk-n-honey and @cangrellesteponme's Tumblr blogs but it's not letting me do both so here's my thoughts w/o the texts that inspired it.

For context I'll say that the princess started it by posting (and I can't say I entirely disagree) the following:

"People now in the end of 2022 on this platform in the kuro fandom: Sebastian Michaelis is the bad guy. The worst, the most evil, unshippable character. "

Then the others gave their ideas and in the end I wanted to add a couple thoughts, to wit:

I am one who enjoys the butler and sees enough character development to keep me interested —though I do know what you meant @bapydemonprincess— I'd just like to add and suggest that perhaps this would be a better way to interpret Sebastian and his 'evil'.

So is he? Evil, I mean. Is he really?

Isn't he more like an intelligent, very hungry tiger who just happens to walk on two legs and to whom you can speak? By that I mean to ask you, do you call all meat-eating creatures evil because they must violently kill cute little furry things in order to stay alive? Don't we normally view wolves, big cats, badgers, bears, fluffy fishers, hyenas and such as frightening, yes, but also noble and elegant, and find their prowess in hunting rather thrilling and beautiful to watch?

When you see such documentaries who do you root for, the lion or the antelope? (well I was practically raised by cats so my answer'll be obvious.)

Or do you perhaps feel more like medieval people once did, that wild beasts and domestic any who kill humans deserve to be hauled into court, tried and ultimately publicly executed, hung until dead for having the audacity to kill a human being?(There is an argument to be made for that, but this is neither the time nor the place.)

Isn't it rather foolish and ultimately a waste of time to fight against realty? Against your own inborn nature, against what you are made to be?

Could your housecat really swear off meat and join PETA?

You know she wouldn't want to even if she could. She loves being a cat and catching mice is the best kind of fun... and I'm certain that represents Sebastian's opinion on the matter as well.

Reality in Ciel and Sebastian's world is demons must devour human souls to live. It is the price Sebastian pays to continue to live. He even goes about it in a quite honorable manner (well. MOST of the time. It’s hard to resist being a little ‘slippery’ when you can run rings around the other person’s intellect isn’t it.) And since when is it evil to do and be exactly what you were born/made/whatever to do and be? It would hardly be fair to ask him to adopt a human view of right and wrong, would it? Just like us he cannot rail against his nature any more than we can throw a fit and insist we can live without drinking water. Be dead in three days if we tried that nonsense wouldn't we?!

Dunno what would happen to Sebastian if he tried going 'vegetarian,' but I'll bet he has no interest whatever in finding out!

I don't feel like I can condemn him for following his very natural desire to continue to live. We all want that. Thus, the lion must eat the cute little antelope. We don't call ‘the king of beast’ evil for that, do we -- well, I hope we don't. Antelope's quite tasty after all !

Of course, I'm certain it all seems very evil to that particular antelope caught bleating beneath his claws right now (!!!) The whole subject seems quite subjective when you think about it like this, doesn't it?

A few people have asked us about the TikTok of a young woman arguing that the "biological narrative" of pregnancy conceptualizes the fetus as a parasite.

Dr. Calum Miller recently addressed the video on Twitter, and we are reposting his response here:

This viral video about fetuses being parasites is honestly the perfect example of what happens when you give a first year undergrad a small bit of technical knowledge and a camera. (I'm not saying she is a first year undergrad - just that she comes across like one.)

1) She seems to think there is an interesting difference between the ‘body knowing its pregnant’ and the fetus ‘tricking’ the body into knowing that its there through hCG. Obviously the only way the body could know that it is pregnant is by some sort of signal from the fetus. To try and distinguish these is unintelligible. This is like saying that your body doesn’t know that it is cold: the cold forces your body to warm up. They are one and the same thing.

2) She seems to suggest that the outer layer of the zygote/embryo preventing an immune response is a 'trick'. But the immune system helps to clear the debris from any cell rupturing, including the mother's cells. That doesn't show the cell is an 'invader'.

3) She seems to think it is interesting that parasites and fetuses occasionally use some similar mechanisms for evading an immune response. That is how evolution works. There are occasional similarities between how parasites and the mother's cells evade immune responses too - but this is clearly irrelevant.

4) The final point about suppressor cells seems to undermine her argument. Suppressor cells do the same job for the mother's cells, preventing them from being attacked – but we wouldn’t call it a ‘trick’ as if her cells are actually invaders.

5) She seems to think it is significant that the fetus makes the placenta and puts it into your body without you knowing. 99% of things in our body are done without us knowing, so this is obviously not significant in any way.

6) How does she think a baby could ever exist without, in her words, ‘tricking’ the mother? It has different genes because it is a different human being – obviously it has to avoid immune attacks (just as all cells within the mother do). To say that this is a ‘trick’ is just assuming from the outset that the baby doesn’t belong there. You could just as easily (in fact more so) interpret it as the clever mechanism nature has come up with to defend both a mother and her baby from autoimmunity. Calling it a trick is really just assuming the conclusion – that the fetus doesn’t belong there. But the falsehood of the conclusion is actually more obvious than its truth – obviously the fetus belongs there: that is how reproduction works and that is why any animals exist at all.

7) You could obviously portray the entire immune system as a kind of ‘trick’ if you really wanted: the whole immune system has developed mechanisms to make sure it only targets foreign things and not host cells. This isn’t a ‘trick’ in the sense that the host cells are actually foreign invaders; it’s just how the immune system had to evolve: it had to recognise host cells (and offspring), and attack other things. Obviously this doesn’t always work. To try and extract a narrative out of this is frankly completely bizarre.

8) Most of this seems to just boil down to the profoundly uninventive claim that babies are genetically distinct from their mothers and hence need biological mechanisms to evade the immune system. Well, obviously. But mum's cells need some of those tricks as well!

9) This all just depends on the claim that the fetus is invading. But obviously this isn’t plausible – the fetus is there in its natural habitat (as we all once were) with no culpability and usually as a result of an action the mother took which she knew would result in that. It is like saying the person in the apartment above you invaded your apartment because you smashed your ceiling/their floor in. It's basically just putting a moral spin onto some rudimentary biological facts and it is embarrassing.

And did you know that the baby produces stem cells which go round mum's body healing her tissues, e.g. from heart attacks, strokes, liver damage, and more? One leading scholar concludes: "after the mother spends 9 months providing nutrients and an environment for optimal growth and development of the baby, the baby gives back cells with regenerative potential to the mother...it is the mother who benefits". If you call yourself problematic/proship or call people puritans or fandom cops (or claim fandom critics is purity culture) a bit too unironically and seriously I’m just blocking, man, but frankly, if your main occupation is shipping discourse regardless of stance and you’re older than like 17-20 or beefing with actual children I’m also just blocking you. There’s nuances and neither side likes to work with those and you're too damn old to be making that your main hobby, let alone doing it at all.
