RWBY Ship Parallels #1: Fear & Bravery
There are too many ship parallels to put them all in one meta, so I'll make individual posts as I remember them. The first one I want to tackle is how all the canon or hinted-at-being-canon ships all have pivotal moments where the themes of being afraid and/or having courage come up.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some elaborations under the cut!
For starters, just for context to refer back to throughout the post, the definition of courage/bravery is as follows:
noun 1. the ability to do something that frightens one. 2. strength in the face of pain or grief.
I was initially going to list these chronologically, but we're going to do it on a ship by ship basis instead. First up:
Renora
The first incident for them happens all the way back in V4 during their backstory flashback. Ren underwent a small arc learning from his father that sometimes the worst action to take is not taking any action at all, even if it's scary. He then tries to support Nora by teaching her this same lesson: that they both need to be brave. She expresses vulnerability about how scared she is, Ren confesses to feeling the same, and together they decide to look after each other from that point on. Which makes everything just a bit less frightening.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We also revisit these same themes in their V8 confession. First we see Nora criticizing Ren for running away just because things got difficult:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And after Ren owns up to this cowardice, the things he did out of fear of failure, the conversation shifts. Nora admonishes herself, and Ren lists things off about her that he admires, the last of which - while not using the word itself - calls to how brave of a person she is and cites it as one of the main reasons why he loves her. Because as the definition above states, being strong and helping people without worrying about how much it might hurt you in turn is what it means to have courage.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
WhiteKnight
Their heart-to-heart in V9E9 says it all. Weiss has been carrying the weight of failing to save Atlas since it fell, and after Ruby's actions in the episodes prior, she became aware (a bit too late) of how those same failures were weighing on their leader. So when Jaune acknowledges the harm he caused from trying so desperately not to repeat their past mistakes, Weiss is the perfect person to step up for reassurance.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She knows that their failures do not equate to their worth or all the good they're capable of doing. And reminding Jaune of this, calling him a brave and good person in spite of his failures, is what he needed to hear to be able to reach an acceptance he hadn't been able to achieve in all those years trapped alone in the Ever After.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Also the framing parallel of BB and WK both holding each other is a very nice touch.)
Bumbleby
With BB it's not just one or two moments. Blake and Yang's characters both centre around the themes of cowardice and bravery since their beginnings and we see it come up throughout the show a lot. Back in V2, Yang sees the bravery in Blake when she herself can only focus on the opposite:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Blake: When you figured out I was a faunus I didn't know what to do, so I ran. when I realized my oldest partner had become a monster, I ran! Even my semblance... I was born with ability to leave behind a shadow of myself. An empty copy that takes the hit while I run away.
In V4 and 5 we see Yang struggling to get back on her feet after losing her arm and the trauma she endured at Beacon. Blake tells Sun that she sees Yang as the "embodiment of strength" and we, the audience, get to see the proof of this every time she keeps fighting despite shaking, and especially when she faces off with Raven in the finale.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These parallel arcs culminate with both of them facing off against Adam together, but most especially gets called back to in their mutual confession scene in V9:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yang acknowledges what she saw in Blake all those years ago, that she doesn't give up on what matters to her, even when people hurt her, she still fights for what's important. While Blake acknowledges Yang's reliability, her strength, and her courage. And both of them, like Renora, cite these reasons as things they admire, and reasons why they love each other.
Now last, but certainly not least:
Rosegarden
One of the very first things Oscar says to Ozpin when he leaves the farm is that he's scared. This comes back time and time again, especially in the Atlas arc where Oscar spends so much of his time counselling Ironwood against letting his fear control him (a conflict Ruby is also a part of). Our little prince even has a theme song titled Fear to really drive it home.
Whereas Ruby has always been the poster child of "keep moving forward", no matter how much the trauma, stress, pressure, and grief weighs you down. You just have to be strong and keep pressing on, fighting the monster that took her mother away. No matter what.
So, much like BB, there are themes around bravery, fear, and perseverance that apply to both Ruby and Oscar's personal arcs. Both of them especially have focus on being brave despite fears of loss. With Oscar, it is fear of losing himself to the merge; whereas Ruby has a fear of losing those she loves.
All the way back in the infamous Dojo Scene is where we first see these themes addressed in their dynamic. It starts with Oscar expressing vulnerability to Ruby about how afraid he really is.
Tumblr media
Ruby initially tries her usual strategy; surface level reassurances about just pushing through it... but it doesn't work on him. So after some upset from Oscar, she ends up being vulnerable with him too. Something she hadn't done with anyone else in show by that point.
Tumblr media
Ruby admits that she's afraid too, not just for herself, but for the threat Salem poses to the world as they know it and the people within it. Ruby tells him about those she's lost and says that if it had been her instead, those friends would have kept fighting too. That vulnerability, which requires courage in and of itself, is what motivates and inspires Oscar to keep moving forward where Ruby's earlier attempt could not. The scene closes off with one more nod to these themes where Ruby pauses at the door and turns back with one final thought:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In both the above scene and the V4 finale, Ruby cites "fighting for those they've lost and those they haven't lost yet" as her main motive to keep fighting. Up until V8/9 she used this as her greatest source of strength, but that strength is a double edged sword which eventually became her greatest weakness when Neo used it against her. First trapping her in a room with all the people she "failed":
Tumblr media
And then landing a finishing blow with making her kill lose one of the people she loves most: Oscar.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ruby can be brave if it means she can protect the people she loves. But just as Penny's death dealt a very big hit to Ruby's hope, what little she had left was crushed at the thought of losing Oscar (and Little) too.
Aside from that, there has also always been an underlying mystery around what having silver eyes means for Ruby. In V4, she is hunted by Tyrian and in V8 she finds out what her fate would have been had he succeeded. A fate which very justifiably terrifies her and seems to be a theme that will carry on into the Vacuo arc. It is also something that was brought up in the second RWBY x JL movie, I talked about this a little bit in this meta, but I'll share it here as well. In the movie, Ruby opens up a bit about this fear saying the following:
Tumblr media
“Did you know I lost my mom when I was a kid? I don’t know exactly what happened to her, I don’t really remember her, I just have stories. And I keep trying to live up to those stories, but… I realize they don’t matter anymore. Heroes fall. And I just want to get as much done as I possibly can before I do.”
This scene directly parallels one of Oscar's back in V6:
Tumblr media
“I don’t know how much longer I’m going to be… me. But I did some thinking, and I do know that I want to do everything I can to help with whatever time I have left.”
Both of these scenes show their respective courage around fears related to their issues with identity. Oscar saying he will do whatever he can before he loses himself, and Ruby doing whatever she can before she loses her life as all heroes eventually will.
So to summarize: Renora, Whiteknight, Bumbleby, and Rosegarden all have a scene where one or both partners cite the other's bravery as something they admire or love about the other person. All of these ships also include at least one scene - but often more that just weren't listed here - where they open up and are vulnerable with each other about their fears and motivations. And lastly, with BB and RG especially, bravery and fear are central themes to both their relationship dynamics as well as their individual character arcs within those pairings, all of which narratively parallel each other extensively.
CRWBY is very consistent with how it writes its ships and this is only the tip of the iceberg of all the parallels we've seen between these partners so far. But that's all for now; thanks for reading!

So this is almost certainly going to be an unpopular opinion for some, but for a long time now I’ve been feeling that the RWBY fandom puts just a bit TOO much stock in the various fairytale/mythology/literary allusions of the characters when it comes to theory-crafting. It feels like people find out that a certain character A is an allusion to another character B from an already completed story and go ‘Well that must mean that Character A is going to turn out just like Character B!’
Which of course completely ignores that these are allusions and references. Ruby Rose might have strong parallels and similarities to Little Red Riding Hood, but that does not mean she IS literally Little Red Riding Hood. Just as Weiss Schnee is NOT literally Snow White, Penny Polendina is NOT literally Pinocchio and Oscar Pine is NOT literally the Little Prince. Ultimately, whatever allusion a character might have comes SECOND to who they are as an actual character, NOT the other way around.
Whatever allusions a character has might inform what could happen to them, but that should still be treated as secondary to what we actually see them do in the show.
For example, I see a LOT of ships in the RWBY fandom that people seem to largely use interpretations of the characters’ allusions as ‘evidence’, rather than what the characters actually DO in the actual SHOW. Like has anyone noticed that discussions of ships like Bumbleby, Renora, Nuts and Dolts or White Rose have historically not involved much interpretation (relatively speaking anyway) of the potential ‘complimentary allusions’ of these characters? Because there is no NEED to, because all the evidence for these ships is right fucking there on the screen. Meanwhile we’ve got ships (and I am NOT naming names) that people will swear up and down are TOTALLY going to be canon for really-realsies where most or even all of the ‘evidence’ consists of people effectively playing some kind of matching game with their allusions. Or saying nothing more than ‘Character A kinda-sorta resembles the love-interest of Character B’s allusion’.
And ALL of this doesn’t even take into account the biggest factor which I keep getting the impression that WAY too many RWBY fans still having gotten the memo on:
The fact that RWBY literally NEVER plays its allusions STRAIGHT.
All the way from minute one when we saw an allusion to Little Red Riding Hood cutting down a horde of Big Bad Wolves, RWBY has ALWAYS been subverting, inverting, flipping, twisting and otherwise playing it’s allusions, references and archetypes literally ANY way but actually STRAIGHT.
Little Red Riding Hood hunts the Big Bad Wolf. Snow White is equal parts Princess AND Knight in Shining Armor. Cinderella is a tragic villain origin story. Pinocchio was always a real girl. The Great and Powerful Wizard Oz is far more powerful than anyone thought, but is ALSO far more of a fraud than anyone thought.
So when people use these characters’ allusions as some kind of rigid road-map to theorize what might happen to them, it’s not just that this detracts from their identity as their own characters; the story itself isn’t even using that map!
I mean speaking personally, that’s what has always made RWBY theory-crafting FUN. Trying to guess how the writers might twist and flip the allusions they’re using. But that also means that the allusions of the various characters simply DON’T actually provide ANY kind of accurate ‘road-map’ for where they might be going. Instead, the best we can do is use what the actual show has actually shown us to get any kind of idea where the characters are headed.
Ultimately, I feel like too often I see that when people are making theories about RWBY characters, they are treating them more like the characters they are based on, instead of the characters they actually ARE.

Bumblebee, in addition to being a major LGBT couple, is also thematically relevant to RWBY primarily because they are one of the many romantic pairings that directly parallel the main story between Ozpin and Salem's failed relationship.
A big reason why Ozpin and Salem's relationship fell apart was because of their failure to communicate with each other. Ozpin was too dogmatically stuck in the idea that he needed to redeem humanity to the gods, and that they needed to grovel before them for forgiveness. He ended up leading Salem around without telling her about this, despite the fact that Salem absolutely DESPISES the gods for harming her and her husband for extremely petty reasons, and she is not unjustified to despise them. And once that lack of trust and communication was revealed, their inability to properly deal with it led to the relationship collapsing, and all of the misery that followed. This doesn't absolve Salem of her own terrible mistakes and her acts of villainy since then, but it's plainly evident just how damaging the secrecy and half-truths ultimately turned out to be.
It's also relevant when you draw additional parallels to other pairings in the story, like Renora, Arkos, Black Sun, and Adam/Blake.
Arkos fell apart before it could truly begin because Jaune didn't understand Pyrrha's emotional turmoil, and held her on a pedestal subconsciously when she needed understanding the most. As such, his story ended up closely paralleling Salem and Ozpin's tragedy the first time they were separated; a powerful but martyr-complexed warrior saving a helpless person, only for tragedy to tear them apart, and the helpless person making rash grief-stricken decisions in the aftermath that caused immense pain for themselves and others.
Renora was an outwardly good relationship, but it steadily became clear how codependent they really were, how much Ren and Nora had not really dealt with their personal issues and in the former's case, was just outright repressing his darker feelings until his trauma was pressed. Once they hit an ideological impasse, with Ren favoring security and safety due to his own insecurities and his own strongly implied feelings about what happened to his family and village, vs Nora favoring aiding the helpless and marginalized in the face of tyranny due to her abandonment, it only further highlighted how they weren't communicating enough. They had gotten too comfortable with not really challenging each other's beliefs and figuring out their identities outside of just being Renora, something that they've only begun to do after properly talking things over.
Blake and Sun suffered from communication problems, as it was evident that the latter didn't really understand the former and just didn't get her very well with her outside of a shallow crush, but it was more driven by well-meaning ignorance rather than any genuine malice. And once the air was cleared, Sun also ended up showing a relationship that might not have worked out, but at the least was still amicable because they communicated on what the problem was.
Blake and Adam's relationship by contrast was purely toxic, with the latter being all take and no give. Everyone else's desires were subservient to his own, and for all of his outward acts of appearing benevolent, became cruel and selfish the minute anyone challenged him. A purely lopsided relationship that was never going to end well because he had no interest in communication, only subjugation and the expectation of absolute obedience to him. Which also frankly puts him in direct parallel to the God of Light and Darkness' relationship; the latter being stuck in unfair and arbitrary rules made by the former to the point of angrily lashing out when Dark finally had enough (and unfortunately also causing immense harm from the fallout), and said GoL revealing his (albeit more subtle) cruelty when someone challenged him, ala Salem.
Heck, even Team STRQ have this with Tai, Summer, and Raven. The latter two disappearing without any communication as to why (or perhaps in the latter's case, her possibly trying to in regards to her suspicions of Ozpin but being dismissed or ignored) absolutely broke Tai, and the fallout of that hurt Yang and Ruby's ability to value themselves and communicate their own pain, leading to this tension in their familial ties.
Bumblebee in many ways directly parallels each of the above, but the key difference was that when push came to shove, Yang and Blake were willing to try to communicate, to TRY to fix what had happened and actually come to a mutual understanding. And in doing so, they were able to find love with each other and truly begin to heal the wounds that those mistakes made.
I don't have a great deal to add here. Excellent analysis and further proof that Blake & Yang have the healthiest romantic relationship in the show.

Jealous Blake breakdown lmao
Tumblr media Tumblr media
yang makes a comment about diana and blake realizes yang has eyes for the first time since meeting her because yang has always been eyes on her since day 1 and blake is not used to it lmao. “AAND??” she’s pissed lmao and i was on the floor
Tumblr media Tumblr media
yang proposes to bring diana to atlas and blake is immediately like I’M COMING WITH YOU and laughs nervously. the funniest part if that 3 seconds apart ren does the exact same thing when victor says he wants to go kill grimm with nora, so like for those wondering, yes, this was 100% intended as jealousy lmao also jealous renora and jealous bumbleby parallels all over this movie, i lived
Tumblr media Tumblr media
in the airship blake brings up how much her relationship with yang improved an awful lot like im sorry but she’s marking the territory lmaoooo no seriously maybe she wasn’t doing it on purpose but she was all over this out of the blue so im taking it as subconsciously wanting to draw the boundary lmao
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
finally after all the talk they had with diana, blake asks yang to open the airship so she and diana can fight the grimm and yang is uncertain about it obviously, so blake takes the opportunity looks at diana then back at yang and goes “well, you HEARD DIANA, we’re warriors” in the most mocking tone like sorry she’s like, you wanna see strong women there you go bitch lmao i can play this game too. and she goes fight the grimm like she’s definitely not showing off lmao. I’m utterly obsessed with the subtle roast im sorry but this woman is territorial it drives me nuts lmao
overally im glad it wasn’t like....exagerated or bordering unhealthy, which could have been a worry of mine. it was just very cute and played as a joke and it got resolved immediately, by the middle of the movie they all forgot about it and actually i got the vibe that both blake and yang were both a little into diana lol. renora’s jealousy arc was uhm nasty, for comparison, like they actually almost fought about it but that’s probably because the movie is set during v7 and i mean you can see that renoras are not doing well, plus victor was purposely causing the drama while diana was not. you can tell both the bees end up being fond of diana’s friendship!! and they also have some sweet talks all three of them soooo. yeah, it was very lovely!!

I don't known if you noticed or not, but in the back ground of v7ep9, with the Rosegarden fumble scene, the pillars have what looks like roses and green stems going around them and I'm just like did they (CRWBY) plan this !?!?
I did notice!! Everything about that scene is so blatant, intentional, and in your face and... y'know what, I've been meaning to talk about this scene for forever. Now feels a good a time as any.
Reasons Why Rosegarden is Canon: #013 - The Fumble
Tumblr media
I have to admit, this was the first scene that really made me realize that these two were being set up as more than just character foils. And the way it does that is by making this scene sooooo tropey. We've got them Speaking in Unison, Finishing Each Other's Sentences, all with the air of Sickening Sweethearts. Ruby's little run towards him making them almost completely collide? Her closed off body language and nervous giggles? The second jinx at the end? The way it ties into their respective arc(s) while also paralleling other ships?
Lets break it down piece by piece.
First, this scene represents a resolution of sorts to the conflict - or, in romance arc terms, "break up" - that was set up between them at the start of the volume. The disagreement over what to say to Ironwood about the Oz situation is something that Oscar doesn't agree with, but respects either way; prompting the two of them to spend much of the volume separate and distant from each other.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As CRWBY says in the V7 commentary, The Fumble is when they "finally start to regain trust in each other". This, as well as their interactions within it, stand perfectly well on their own. Especially how it talks about the themes of trust, truth, and fear that both their solo arcs brush up against often. It also reaffirms the mutual care that's been established within their relationship thus far.
Ruby has spread herself too thin with her responsibilities and is offering to go tell Ironwood the truth that she initially decided to keep from him... but she's needed in Mantle with the rest of her team. So Oscar, who as we've previously established, is well aware of the weight of responsibility Ruby carries as leader, offers to take over for her. While he didn't agree with her decision from the start, he did respect it and therefore has his own amount of blame in keeping the truth hidden. His actions in this scene tell Ruby that she doesn't have to carry it all alone. That her decisions are not solely hers to bare the weight of. Even reassures her when she double checks that he's okay with it. Look at the little thumbs up! He's got it, Ruby! No worries!!
Tumblr media
But outside of how it works for their individual and shared arcs as a pair, it also follows an established pattern within how CRWBY writes their romances. This 'breach of trust/break up' arc is one that has been explored with both Bumbleby and Renora as well. With BB, it kicks off when Blake runs at the end of V3, followed by her and Yang at odds with each other throughout most of V6, before they regain trust after protecting each other against Adam.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
With Renora, it's running tangentially to Rosegarden throughout the Atlas arc. Ren, not believing they should be huntsman or be carrying these responsibilities, follows Ironwood's orders to the letter, represses his feelings and gives his team the cold shoulder, etc... all while Nora is in complete disagreement with how he's handling it. But both Bumbleby and Renora have new conflicts and resolutions throughout V8 as well... and so does Rosegarden.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ruby and Oscar don't end this scene working fully together. They split up, following the name of the episode. Oscar stays behind in Atlas (As Above) to talk to Ironwood, and Ruby goes down to Mantle (So Below). Only for the two to swap places by the end of the volume with Oscar falling to the crater, and Ruby getting picked up from Atlas. They separate again in V8 following the split of the other ships as well; Yang, Ren, Jaune, and Oscar split from Blake, Nora, Weiss, and Ruby, respectively. The narrative constantly separating them with intention.
When they do have another resolution with the (rudely interrupted) reunion hug in V8E10, it is once again in this same location: The Schnee Manor entryway. Which, if you look at the full scope, with its rose engraved pillars, is designed like the definition of a fairy tale ballroom.
Tumblr media
This romantic setting having not just one, but two very important moments to their shared narrative, ties into a Chekov's gun that's been following them around since the beginning: the idea that fighting and dancing aren't so different.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even their body language and poses have them set up as if they're asking the other to dance!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
During this scene, they're also framed between two open doorways. Doors framing Rosegarden is something I've mentioned a few times, but am still working on a full meta for. To explain it briefly, open doors within stories - especially RWBY's narrative - are often symbolic of a few things. New beginnings, transitions and change, but also opening up or vulnerability. In this scene, Ruby and Oscar end up coming to an agreement between two thresholds marking a mutual transition. And they do this by trusting each other, opening up to one another, and ultimately growing closer in the process.
Speaking of being on the same page, I also want to talk about how the other characters are framed here. (Disclaimer: this isn't meant to downplay other ships, it is just an objective observation.)
Within the scene proper, team JNR all leave before Ruby and Oscar arrive, but there is an Interesting Focus on the characters that pass them over. The first we see passing over Ruby's shoulder is Penny, the second one is Weiss, this time over Oscar's shoulder. Leaving the two behind...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But then the camera angle changes. When Ruby and Oscar say "we should tell Ironwood" in unison, they are overlapped by Yang and Blake. Ruby then asks "Guess we're on the same page, huh?" before it pans back to Oscar and shows Bumbleby crossing past them a second time, as he responds "Guess so".
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Which tells us two things. First, that they're on the same page as each other, and second that they are also on the same page narratively as Bumbleby. And if that wasn't enough to really drive the idea home, they give us another parallel to them by the end of the scene when Ruby and Oscar jinx with each other again!!
Ruby is so excited that she actually jumps off the ground when she turns around to wish Oscar luck, they bid each other farewell before she gives him the finger guns (just like her big sis does to Blake in V9), and then Ruby leaves through the front door, giggling again. Which prompts Marrow to roll his eyes in exasperation at the cringey, overly romantic youth he's been forced to witness twice over now. Once here, and once with BB earlier in the volume.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The last thing I'll mention has less to do with analyzing the scene objectively and more about a little test a dear friend of mine ran. She took the clip of this scene and sent it to some friends that weren't familiar with RWBY, the ship, or either of the characters individually, and asked them the question: What do you think the dynamic is between these characters?
And every single person that was asked immediately agreed that there was either a crush situation going on or it was building to a potential romance arc.
So take that as you will. Love this scene with all my heart, and thanks for giving me an excuse to talk about it. 🥰

Not to be delusional but whiterose story not being intertwined like the bees is exactly the whole point for me.
I love both ships and the way they play out so everytime people compares them and are like "well wr can't be canon or x because their stories aren't intertwined" hurts a bit cuz that's the whole point of their relationship.
What they have is parallels, both being raised by their older sister and sheltered by their family. Not knowing how the world actually moves and finally get out of that grip they have before to learn and be independent.
I wouldn't want wr to be like the bees because Ruby and Weiss are absolutely different from Yang and Blake, I like what they have, they are more low key, more shy, I keep saying how they remind me of the first love, the first time you are in a relationship.
What is the point of both main couples to have the same foundation? I wouldn't want that, I like diversity in my meals.
Just like arkos and renora have different foundations and both are canon (RIP Phyrra, you would have loved dilf Jaune).
I principally enjoy wr foundation, I've always said I hc Ruby having a cute crush on Weiss back at Beacon but Weiss not reciprocating till like end of V5-V6.
We all should push for more wlw canon couples that on just... Conforming with only having 1 wlw couple out of the main cast, fuck that, all my girls are queer/gay and in love with each other

I know a lot of people myself included love the Renora & BB parallels done, but something that just hit me is the Arkos & NND parallels. Both involve:
red-headed characters
one party gets to be treated as a regular person. Ruby treating Penny as just another girl regardless of her being a robot; Jaune treating Pyrrha as just another girl instead of putting her on a pedestal.
tragic
entire arcs of surviving party grieving the lost party that highlight how much they meant to them
both slot into the recurring theme of friends to more via emotional bonding
Pyrrha may not have gotten the Maiden powers but was in the process of getting them; thus both being Maiden territory. Or Honorary Maiden and Maiden.
both Pyrrha and Penny have been used to haunt, torture, and manipulate Jaune and Ruby
Anyway just a ramble

Speaking about tension and conflict to build romance:
Bumbleby's conflict was Adam stalking Blake, and Yang upset by her leaving because Blake was scared, but gradually more relieved as she proved that she would always stayed by her side and fight together
Renora's conflict was Ren being stubborn and almost risking his life to a grimm that killed both his parents and Nora stopping him, leading them to a better strategy attack
~
We already saw Oscar suggesting Ruby to tell Ironwood the truth, maybe Oscar will struggle to 'share her burden' because she's like her sister and doesn't like being vulnerable? Or maybe it will be about the merge and we'll have a parallel to Blake in V1 talking about "the man with two souls fighting for control" ?
Of the main three ships, they all had a big tension and conflict leading up to V8, and then had a secondary one just by virtue of the separation in Atlas.
Yes BB's conflict was Adam plus Blake running away while Renora's was Ren's tunnel vision in v4... but then in V8 Yang is worried that Blake thinks less of her for prioritizing Mantle over Amity. And Ren and Nora are having a conflict of ideals AND miscommunication.
Tumblr media
For Rosegarden, their conflict started with not agreeing on how to handle Ironwood and then became stretched out by ending up on opposite teams while Atlas was falling. The difference between RG and the other ships is that eVERYONE ELSE GOT TO STAY REUNITED AT THE END OF V8, BUT RG DIDN'T. 😭😭😭
I have a feeling the rest of their conflict in the Vacuo arc is going to have multiple layers and be very personal to their individual characters. For starters, there's a matter of how to sort out leadership. Ruby used to be head of the team and became the symbol of hope for All of Remnant after her broadcast... but in her absence, Oscar will have stepped up to the plate in her place. There's going to be some fumbling to get them back on the same page again to a point where they are properly sharing the weight of their burdens together.
Then we know that Oscar probably thinks she died! :'D Which, in tandem with his attachment, admiration, and protectiveness of her in the past, sets him up perfectly to not want to lose her again. Be that struggling with sticking too close, keeping his distance from not wanting to get too attached again (too bad boy, you can't run from this), or a mix of both... it's anyone's guess how he'll handle it.
Tumblr media
We also know, thanks to Neo, just how important Oscar is to Ruby and that the thought of losing him is something she literally could not handle. So there is almost certainly going to be a mutual protectiveness going on there. they can have a LITTLE codependency, as a treat. /lh

We also have VERY SOLID SETUPS for their individual character arcs mirroring each other so strongly. And it's impossible for those themes to not be explored at this point.
From their very introductions, they both address each other's core conflicts with their first words to each other.
Oscar: Woah, you... have silver eyes.
Silver eyes being symbolic of her burden as Salem's adversary and the mirror that reflects humanity's hope back onto darkness.
Ruby: Who... are you?
Oscar being the next (and likely final) Ozcarnation who's entire character arc is a struggle of identity.
Tumblr media
Oscar's "I always knew I wanted to be more than a farmhand... but this? Who would ask for this?" to Ruby's "I wanted to be the hero, like the stories that my mom read to me."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oscar's "I thought the idea of falling through Remnant into a new world was... exciting. I never understood why she was so sad when she finally made it back home." to Ruby's "I don't want to be me anymore."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ruby's "What if you could be anyone?" to Oscar's "I'm just going to be another one of his lives, aren't I?"

god the way they've written this story... i sincerely don't understand how people can watch ALL of this, all the moments i didn't mention cause i'm too lazy to turn this thread into another essay, and still say they don't see it. 😭
however their conflict is handled, i know i'm going to be very not normal about it every step of the way and i'm so freaking excited

Not me just realizing that between the flowers (snapdragons) and the lightning motifs (Rainestorm) that Raeda has the same romantic symbols as Renora
Why are all my OTPs a circle?

Hi! I enjoyed your analysis. Hope you don't mind the ask. In the post you talked about alternating between background and foreground, what background scenes do you think are particularly worth paying attention to? Starting to realize how much Ive overlooked lol.
Thanks! And of course, happy to receive asks! Good question, there's a few I could name and there's some scenes that are technically 'foreground' but are extremely understated - like the close-up of Blake's sword but here's a few:
My favourite background moments to note, is a scene in 'Creation' - Vol 8 - where Penny is becoming human, there's a huge flash of light. Ruby and Weiss cover their own eyes, turning their bodies away. Whereas, positioned in front of the 'camera' (but not the focus), Blake and Yang immediately turn into each other, Yang placing a protective arm around Blake and shielding them both with her other arm. When the camera pulls away to show them in the background, Yang's arm is still around her and it shows Blake wrapping her arm around Yang too. The camera begins to focus on Penny, with the two of them stood comfortably looking on with their arms round each other. It's so easy to miss, especially the latter part, but I love the way they're framed together and is just such a nice little background inclusion as it shows an active choice to animate these two doing something differently to Weiss and Ruby.

Another one that's often overlooked is in 'Fault', Vol 8, the infamous "Yeah...Ruby..." line from Yang - the screen focuses on the part of the bike she's fixing and looking at before she initiates that conversation with Jaune, which is purple, and likely what prompted her to think of Blake.
There's also scenes, particularly in Volumes 7/8 as the cast grows, where lines are added in to imply off-screen developments they don't have time to show on-screen, such as:
"Have you guys ever thought about branching out - you always pair up but...." - Marrow, in Sparks, Vol 7, which is used to imply that they're spending more time together without showing it, partnering up on all their missions.
"Blake and Yang are off doing their own thing... Again." - Nora, in A Night Off, Vol 7. Marrow implied they're spending all their time together at work, Nora heavily implies that they're spending a lot of time together outside of work - likely to banish the notion that it's just a 'I just want to fight by her side' type of arrangement.
This one's much smaller, but in Risk - Vol 8 - after Ironwood has announced his ultimatum, Yang tells Ruby, "you know, that hound kicked us around like we were nothing, but Blake told me that you and the Schnees managed to take it down..." Simple, but just having Yang slot in that, somewhere offscreen after their Beeunion, she and Blake have caught up about their time apart. Later in this episode, once Ruby expresses hope in the form of a new plan, the camera pans out to show them all together in a circle. Everyone's focused on Ruby who had just spoken, except for Ren and Nora who look to each other, and Blake who honest to god looks like a sunflower following the sun as she just turns to beam at an oblivious Yang. I don't tend to place too much emphasis on two characters who are often in scenes together looking at each other, but there's something about the Renora parallel that stood out to me, especially as everyone else is very still - it was a choice to animate her this way. Blake's often shown staring at Yang, notably whenever something good happens and she's happy, or when she needs comfort/is worried.
Lastly, my three other on-screen understated favourites are:
Tumblr media
This one is in 'As Above, So Below' Vol 7. They use parallels between these two and Renora often, the scene directly before this one is Nora comforting Ren by holding his hand, then pans to these two. Yang looking worried (as Ren did), then just a subtle smile from Blake and shared look between the two as they relax. Notably, they're sitting opposite Ren and Nora; showing how the two pairs 'mirror' one another.

Another 'blink and you'll miss it' (but not the BB fans! We see all) is in 'Worthy' Vol 8. Immediately after Yang falls and Blake was unable to catch her, we can see Blake's body almost entirely off the platform and Weiss having to pull her back up. The strong implication being that Blake was ready to willingly dive into the void after her. (I make no apologies for the fact that the screenshot looks like Neo is nudging Weiss' butt off the platform).
Tumblr media
And lastly, who could forget this absolute screamer. It's a popular and iconic scene now, but you'd be forgiven if you didn't see Yang checking Blake out the first time in 'A Night Off' Volume 7.
But to add a little bit more into the 'background' notion of the scene that not a lot of people seem to talk about: Weiss is deciding what she wants to do. Three 'options' are presented to the audience, but only two invitations are extended to the team. Ruby explicitly invites Weiss to the party, Jaune invites Weiss to the movies... But earlier in the scene, Ruby asks what Blake and Yang are doing and it's met with a matter-of-fact statement that they had been invited out, but extend no invite, no cordial 'if you want in' or 'come along' to any of their teammates. These two are very much presented as being completely in their own bubble separate from the rest of the team.
Sorry this ended up so long!! I should have just made a separate post on background analysis and parallels because I have stuff from earlier volumes. I just love these two! Anyway, I hope this helped and hope you enjoyed!
