Charles Willson Peale and the Prototypical Dime Museum
We have a duel objective in giving the Travalanche treatment to Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827) and his distinguished family this morning. The first is that the Peales figured in the American Revolution, the 250th anniversary of which we will be celebrating over the next couple of years. The second, closer to the usual themes of this blog, is that they played a role in the development of the…

It is said that an officers' farewell party for General Wayne at Fort Washington in December 1795 marked the first time Judge Symmes and William Henry Harrison actually encountered each other since the lieutenant's "run-away" marriage to the judge's daughter the previous month. Amid the dancing and toasts, the story goes, the red-faced and blunt-spoken Judge Symmes strode up to young Lieutenant Harrison, resplendent in uniform with dress sword dangling at his side.
"How do you intend to support my daughter, sir?" he demanded.
Lieutenant Harrison reached for the hilt of his sword.
"With my right arm and my sword, sir!" he replied.

Had to use my art history degree for something and I feel like this is a good use of it.
colored pencils and a bit of white paint, 5 hours of work with a few naps in between. Detail closeup shots below. Enjoy! I had a lot of fun making this.

The Real Face of Marquis de Lafayette.
A revised and more authentic representation of Marquis de Lafayette's reconstructed life mask, originally cast by J.I. Browere in 1825. During Lafayette's final visit to the United States, he graciously posed for Browere at the sculptor's studio located at 315 Broadway in Manhattan on July 11, 1825. Unfortunately, the initial casting of his life mask sustained damage. Despite being pressed for time, Lafayette kindly agreed to sit for Browere at a later date. Consequently, Lafayette once again sat for Browere on July 19, this time in Philadelphia's Hall of Independence, resulting in the creation of the second life mask. At 4 p.m. Browere finished the life mask and the bust under the eye of Lafayette and his attendant, and had the satisfaction then of receiving from the General the assurance that it was the only good bust made of him.
Lafayette's life mask was a likeness so admirable and of such remarkable fidelity, that General Jacob Morton, Rembrandt Peale, De Witt Clinton, S. F. B. Morse, John A. Graham, Thomas Addis Emmet and others, came forward and enthusiastically bore witness to its being “a perfect facsimile” of the distinguished Frenchman.
Rembrandt Peale, widely known by his composite portrait of Washington, writes: New York August 10th 1825...."The singular excellence shown by Mr. Browere in his new method of executing Portrait busts from the life deserves the applause and patronage of his countrymen. The bust of La Fayette, which he has just finished, is an admirable demonstration of his talent in this department of the Fine Arts. The accuracy with which he has moulded the entire head, neck and shoulders from the life and his skill in finishing, render this bust greatly superior to any we have seen. It is in truth a “faithful and a living likeness.” Of this I may judge having twice painted the General’s portrait from the life, once at Paris and recently at Washington."
Saml. F. B. Morse writes, "Being requested by Mr. Browere to give my opinion of his bust or cast from the person of General La Fayette, I feel no hesitation in saying it appears to me to be a perfect facsimile of the General’s face."
