"And this urge to run away from what I love is a sort of sadism I no longer pretend to understand" - Martha Gellhorn
Simon "Ghost" Riley x Reader
[Reincarnation au]
Word Count -> 453
IMAGINE...
For years Simon has dreamed of you.
He recalls his mother asking him who you were over breakfast. He didn't have an answer back then, and before he could say something, his father stumbled out of the master bedroom and told him to go to school.
He knew that look in his father's eyes, knew that refusing to would only make it worse on his mother. So, with a guilty feeling that rested in his gut, he went off to school.
Even when he was grown and had enlisted, he found himself dreaming of you. Well, he calls them dreams, but they felt so real.
A dream of you curled up beside him, a fire crackling in the fireplace and the wind howling outside. Another dream of you dancing with him, leading him effortlessly through a difficult dance. In every dream, it is only the two of you, doing mundane things. In every dream, he cannot recall your name nor your features, only the feelings of warmth and protection that he seldomly saw in his young life.
When he formally meets you, he is gobsmacked. He knows it is you that has been in his dreams since he can remember. He knows that you are the cause of the warmth and protection that left him yearning in the morning when he succumbed to sleep.
Still, he greets you like he does everyone, even though you are the same rank as him. You appear to not mind his gruff tone and instead take it in stride, like you've done this before.
It both scares and comforts him. No one has been in tune with him like you are, though some have gotten close, they usually die.
When he's having an "off day" you'll accommodate him. You'll take notes for him during debriefs when he spaces out, you'll accompany him in the gym, though you do your own exercise, you are always in the corner of his eye. This is a new territory for him and he doesn't want to fuck up something good like he always has.
You aren't there for just his off days, you hang around him, despite him telling you that you should probably do some paperwork. You only chuckle and tell him you'll do it later.
Sooner than he'd like, he finds you both sitting in his office, him filling out reports and you filling out charts.
He finds it mortifying when he finds himself in grumpier moods when you are out on a mission, when the medic who is treating him isn't you, when your attention isn't on him.
He finds that every part of him, when he's around you, yields to you.
His blood sings yours, yours, yours!

With the shrine Joel made in his newest episode, fleshing out more of this au I made of Cod Priest Grian (what I'm calling the au (link is to the first post I made)
Grian: Almost a high priest, he just needs the mending book and he'll be one. Worships the Codfather in a very casual manner, being one of few able to properly hear his voice vs just feel his intentions from the waves
Scar: Traveler who sells animals and accidentally grabs the mending book meant for Grian. Because of this, he technically counts as a high priest, despite never praying to Jimmy ever. He'd heard of the Codfather in his travels, but only the myths about his role in the end of the world, a la Ragnarok
Jimmy: God of sea creatures and disasters, told in stories to be the destroyer of the world. Main source of worship is the hermit folk, but has other churches elsewhere. Can communicate fully with Grian, Gem, and Joel
Joel: Reincarnation of Joelious, god of pottery and sacrifice (He knows, but the others don't). He occasionally prays to Jimmy, but it always feels weird, so he doesn't do it often. Prefers to try to gain the attention of the blue axolotl, though it's unsure as to why he does to the other hermits
Gem: High priest of the Codfather, she constantly laughs at Grian's failed attempts. She's aware of the joke, where as Grian only thinks he's being unlucky or Jimmy thinks he should've chosen a different symbol. Worships the twin gods of magic and power but out of a familial thing more so than a true belief
Lizzie: Side, Blue Axolotl, god of the ocean and battle. She seems to have disappeared from worship about 500 years ago, and her temples that survived look frantically ruined. Joel's trying to get back in contact with her via prayer as a human, because all godly attempts have failed.

heeebeedeebs ok, so, any headcanons for the marriage of state au on like....uh.... heh.... burial customs? for like... the cod alliance?
(also maybe also wither rose toooooo????)
ooooooooo!
So I actually hadn't thought about this yet which is why it took me a couple of days to answer, i had to poke at it a bit. So now I do have thoughts!
This might get a little bit gruesome, along the lines of frank discussions of dead bodies and disposal thereof.
Cod Alliance
The Swamp being...swampy, it doesn't lend itself to burial very well. The honored dead are burned (dry wood is a valuable resource) and the dishonored dead are basically dumped in a specific corner of the swamp very heavily populated with Things That Eat People. (Mostly Catfish and Alligators, this is an American South swamp/bayou biome in my heart, which does, unfortunately, mean they have mosquitoes) They also have wakes, like full party mode, music and alcohol and stories of the deceased. They were also an occupied territory for several centuries, with very few resources left to them, community support in time of bereavement is very important. Especially in situations where the deceased supported a family.
The Ocean Empire buries at sea. The dead are weighted down and taken to the Deep Ocean and dropped there. Think whale fall. They are a bit more solemn about their rituals than The Swamp but there are several similarities. They have an appointed grieving period of two weeks, during which the loved ones of the deceased are sequestered.
Mezaleans build mausoleums. Their dead are burned and the ashes interred with their families or, for an honored few, mostly royals who provided exceptional service to their people, beneath the Mother Tree. There is also a public mausoleum in each city for those without families, though those people are few, as Mezaleans engage in liberal social adoption. Most people find themselves quietly absorbed into some sort of family unit before they have been alone too long (but that is a whole nother post). They also tend to build memorials, ranging from small potted gardens of favorite flowers to full, larger-than-life statues. They don't believe in reincarnation so much as in redistribution of energy and preservation of memory.
Pixandria, for somewhat obvious reasons, has a very unique relationship with death (and also Death). They also have a party, celebrating the passage from life to death, though theirs is less focused on memories of the past than the Swamp and more on congratulating the dead on their migration to the next stage of existence. Every death celebration includes a seat at the table for Death herself, that is kept liberally supplied with food and alcohol at all stages of the festivities. They bury their dead, and quickly, since corpses don't keep long in the desert. Priests and royals are buried in catacombs beneath the Anthill while everyone else is buried in one of a few designated locations in the desert. (The party does not start until everyone is safely back in the oasis or Anthill, as travelling drunk through the desert is a good way to end up having to repeat the entire event again very shortly, and while they do not fear death, they do also value life.)
Wither Rose Alliance
Mythland also buries their dead. I haven't thought too much about the details but the primary religion of the region is a blood cult so there is definitely something done with the blood of the deceased. It's drained from the body and they use it for some sort of memorial ritual. These are not open to outsiders and are usually closed affairs involving only the family and close friends of the deceased and a single priest of the blood sheep.
The Crystal Cliffs, as an empire made up in no small part of people who are direct transplants from other empires, do their best to honor the cultural practices of the deceased. If not, they practice a form of sky burial, as the sheer stone cliffs don't offer a lot of burial opportunities and they territory is too small for it to be practical. The native population consider dead bodies functionally as waste matter, no longer important once it is no longer inhabited by a living soul. It's just a matter of practical disposal. Though as stated, they will go to great lengths to respect the wishes of the dead regarding the disposal of their bodies, including transporting them all the way to Pixandria if necessary.
The Grimlands also bury their dead. (You can see some similarities here, in this alliance.) They have a couple of different regional variations, but they do bury their dead. If the deceased died of illness or redstone poisoning they are burned, to avoid contaminating the land or the living. They usually have a memorial service, and immediate relatives are expected to undergo a grieving schedule not unlike the Ocean. (This probably came from the salmon hybrid population)
Gilded Helianthia, like their primary allies, buries their dead but they do so fully communally, and without any kind of coffins or excess wrappings. Where you are buried depends entirely on when you die. Bodies are left in the ground for five years, to allow full decomposition of all tissues, then the bones are exhumed and burned and the ashes scattered over the ground they were buried in. Once a zone has been completely exhumed, it is converted into farmland. This is one of the ways they rotate their croplands and maintain soil health.
Rivendell has a couple of different burial traditions, depending on how high in the mountains you are. They have a relatively small population, and their birth and death rates are such that it remains fairly steady. Which is to say, both death and birth are fairly rare, when nature is allowed to run its course. (This does mean that things such as war, famine, and sickness can be devastating for them, as it can be very difficult to recoup the population loss) Death is a solemn affair, funeral rites take place over the course of at least a week, and the body is displayed for a significant portion of that. The cold climates of the mountain allow for that. Afterwards the body is burned and the ashes either scattered from a high peak, or into the river, depending on where the deceased lived. This releases the soul for reincarnation, and to deny this to someone is a very serious statement. Mourning periods vary from 1-10 years, depending on relationship with the deceased, age of the mourner, age of the deceased, and several other factors. The grieving are monitored carefully for signs of Fading during this time.
The Lost Empire has four different distinct burial traditions, equating to the four elements their culture is based around. Pyre, burial, sky burial (done from the tree-tops), and water burial. The rulers are buried on a rotation. (Joey is scheduled to be burned after death, and he maintains this is incredibly romantic given Xornoth's own elemental powers. Xornoth thinks he's weird.)
Everyone Else
It's literally just the Overgrown and Undergrove left at this point so might as well XD
The Overgrown, being fae, and having a very strong nature alignment, return their bodies to the Spring. Fae bodies also, to put it bluntly, decompose very, very quickly. Almost dissolving over the course of a day or so. Burial is swift and flowers are planted to memorialize the deceased.
The Undergrove does not currently have a population beyond Shrub themself, but the gnomes were/are fungal farmers and had very practical views on the burial of bodies, not dissimilar to those of Gilded Helianthia.

I made this AU whenEmpires s2 started but eh here we go-
Remember this is my take and my story based in cannon events thank you.
Odyssey's Sequel AU
Empires season one ended in destruction, death, departure, and disaster.
Scott died, Xornoth died, Joey died(maybe), Pearl died, Katherine left, Lizzie forgot, Joel lost everything, Jimmy left, Fwhip and Gem flew away, Sausage lost everything, Pix disappeared, and Shrub left to find the Gnomes.
All the empires were destroyed; the Ocean Empire and Cod Empire drained, Mezalea split in half, the Lost Empire burned down, the Grimlands exploded, the Crystal Cliffs shattered, Rivendell was Corrupted, Gilded Helinthia withered away, Mythland was overrun with Blood Sheep and darkness, the Overgrown(also House Blossom) shriveled up in flames and cracks, and Pixandria was abandoned.
So, the empires and emperors died.
Until 1,000 years later.
New Empires rose up.
And with it, new emperors.
Except they are all related to the Past Emperors in some way.
Scott, King of Chromia: a Reincarnation of Scott of Rivendell
Joel, god of lightning and thunder: a descendent of Joel, King of Mezalea
Jimmy, of the Codlands: a traveler of space time, the same Jimmy from the past, but changed
Lizzie, Mayor of Critter City: blessed by Lizzie, the Ocean Empress
Shubble, the witch of the Evermore: descendent of Shrub, the Gnome Queen
Joey, Pirate of the Eversea: Rebirth of Joey(same person but died, was born again, and lost memories), Emperor of the Lost Empire
Katherine, Princess of Glimmer Grove: Descendent and chosen of Katherine, Chosen of the Overgrown
Sausage, Protector of Sanctuary: Reborn of Sausage(same person, didn't die, was granted a another chance after the Afterlife, eventually got his memories back), King of Mythland
Fwhip, Goblin King: Haunted by Fwhip, the Count(shares a mind with past Fwhip)
Gem, Princess of Dawn: Spirited by Gem, the High Wizard(the old soul of Gem died and possessed present Gem)
Pix, Historian of the Ancient Capital: Revived Pix, the Copper King(died and came back to life, lost memories)
False, Queen of Cogsmeade: Chosen by Pearl, the Harvest Queen
Oli, Bard of the Olipoligo: Chosen by Xornoth, the demon
I will get more into this AU, along with how everyone deals with this sensation, what being Chosen means, etc.
Asks are always welcomed:)

20 Qs for fic writers
Tagged by @monstersinthecosmos , thank you!!!
1. How many works do you have on A03? 31 (and a few anon, i think 2 or 3. idk, when i post a fic on anon i forget about it forever)
2. What’s your total Ao3 word count? 446,135
3. What fandoms do you write for? currently/primarily vc, iwtv (amc), star wars, and merlin (bbc)!
4. What are your top five fics by kudos? A Lovely Little Normal Life (which, honestly, kind of annoys me lol. i know it's just bc it's a huge fandom, but really? the stupid little 12k harry potter fic i wrote in two days is my most kudos? please...); Arthur Pendragon, Long May She Reign (forever pushing my lesbian genderswap agenda); The Face of God (les mis slightly canon divergent javert character study); The Odyssey of Recollection (amc iwtv s1 pov armand); Away From Stranger Tides (potc philip/syrena fic i started ages ago and never finished, lol)
5. Do you respond to comments? yes i love talking to people in comments!!!! i've made a lot of friends through comments!!
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? omg. umm. merthur fans don't know this yet bc i havent finished posting but it's arthur pendragon long may she reign (BUT it's part of a series, so it's literally fine). idk, i dont tend to write long fics that end angsty. but my angstiest fic in general is probably Hollow-Boned Boy (armand contemplating his human life in the early CoD era) or Vision of the Damned (daniel's turning from armand's pov)
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? i love a happy ending!! my series Odysseus in White Silk is probably the happiest ending, and in such an undeserved way hahaha it's so very AU because i was sad after s1 of the show and just wanted them all (and armandaniel) to live happily ever after
8. Do you get hate on fics? i dont think i ever have, but i tend to read comments in good faith too, so maybe someone out there is annoyed that i interpreted their vague dislike comment as a genuine comment or something, idk. in general though, i'll say no
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind? yes but i dont post that often, idk if there's a particular kind, but generally it tends to be a little rougher than is probably appropriate without discussion in real-life situations, but also very...idk my friend described it as very tender, like theyre very clearly in love. which is so funny considering that that kind of tenderness irl gives me fucking hives lmfao
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written? oh wow, not in a long time. i do have a wip sitting around rn that's a crossover between london spy and cloud atlas, which is really crazy until you remember that ben whishaw is in both london spy and the cloud atlas movie lol. and cloud atlas is already about weird reincarnations and parallel worlds and stuff, so it isnt too out-there.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? i dont think so!
12. Have you ever had a fic translated? yes!! The Face of God was translated into Korean by ao3 user Crescent919 !! i've had a few comments on other fics asking to translate for personal use (always yes, of course), but no one else has asked to share a translation publicly
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? no!! i've been thinking about it lately though
14. What’s your all time favorite ship? all-time? probably merlin/arthur from merlin (bbc). it's the whole fate-destiny-choice thing, it just compels me like nothing else
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? hmmm, i would like to finish Roswell -- well, kinda (agent carter farm girl / alien crash landing au) because i still have all the original notes and outlines and stuff. i also made a shitty conlang when i was first writing it, which is crazy lol. but it would need some pretty serious revisions, and i would definitely rewrite the first few chapters that i posted years ago. i just kind of lost the agent carter bug, but i might return to that fic if i ever get in the mood for it again.
16. What are your writing strengths? ooh, i'm not really sure! i get a lot of comments mentioning characters' voices and/or personalities, so i would say maybe that!!! i also feel that i'm fairly good at mimicking an author's writing style when i want to (notably, i do not mimic anne rice when writing vc fic, lol)
17. What are your writing weaknesses? editing for sure. i have at least a hundred fics sitting on my hard drive fully or almost-fully written that i just need to edit. but i would simply rather die than do all of that. it's also why my whole merlin fic got put on pause while i went down the vc rabbithole, because i just can't bring myself to go edit the next chapters lol
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? hmm, i think it's usually unnecessary and comes off as a bit silly. that said, i did do it once (maybe excessively) in Daniel Molloy, Time Bandit (1984 daniel ends up in 1794 theatre des vampires, it's more of a character study than a time travel fic) BUT, let me defend myself -- i did it because daniel doesnt understand french, it's his pov, and he's incredibly confused and distraught for most of the fic. i felt like the dialogue being in french conveyed this sort of "daniel does not belong in this time/place" vibes. but, also, my french is...a little rough. so i'm sure it's an annoying fic for french readers lmao
19. First fandom you wrote for? warriors cats, a million years ago hahahah
20. Favourite fic you’ve written? ok, i have three different answers for this. the fic i think is the best, objectively, in terms of writing and content: The Story of Dani [...] (r63 devil's minion from armand's pov, starting with lestat's house). the fic i am the proudest of, mostly because it was my first "big" fic (it's funny now, bc it's only 41k) and i feel like i grew a lot as a writer while working on it, and i'm still happy with it: The Face of God (les mis pov javert, character study from childhood). the fic i have the most fun with and think about almost 24/7: Arthur Pendragon, Long May She Reign (r63 merthur, canon divergence, this is like a 4-part series that's currently over 300k lmao)
no-pressure tagging: @aunteat @leslutdepointedulac @butchybats @graygiantess and anyone else who wants to!!

"I have built, deep in my heart, a chapel filled with you" - Marcel Proust
Simon "Ghost" Riley x Reader
[Reincarnation au]
Word Count -> 420
IMAGINE...
You are old, you've been alive for decades as the reigning monarch of the vampiric race, being shoved into the position as soon as your parents' had died in order to protect you.
It was lonely, oh so lonely. Servants cared for you like usual and treated you no different from before, but no one was there to hold you as you grieved your parents, no one was there to guide you as you made laws. It was all you, no one else.
So, in an effort to calm a kingdom that had been bothering you, you traveled there to strike a deal, figuring that the King would be smart enough to not attack you.
It was there, in that kingdom where you met your soulmate. You, after some time, learned that his name was Silas, that he belonged to a common family that had passed long ago. The both of you made a life together in a manor that was away from the public eye.
Long story short, Silas died during an ambush when you were heading towards a neutral territory where a meeting was being held. You lost your husband, Silas, and your child later on.
You learned that Silas' old King was the one behind the ambush and you dealt with it accordingly. You razed that kingdom to the ground, hearing the fire crackle and the screams of its citizens and seeing the smoke swirl into the sky.
The upcoming centuries would be harsh on you. You had become a conqueror of distant lands and fell into a void of grief when the anger had left you. The vampire race had become a myth, you had made sure that there was no factual records.
One day, for whatever reason, you went into the military, working and becoming a lieutenant while still managing your people from the shadows.
Then you got recruited for Task Force 141. You thought it was simply another step up in this career path that you would inevitably leave once you became bored.
Then you got to meet them when you officially joined the team.
When you met Lieutenant Riley, who at the time you knew as Ghost. It was heartbreaking when you felt that he was your soulmate, having the same pleasant warmth and tug from your gut that pulled towards Ghost.
You, when you returned to your room, nearly cried as you thanked the universe for giving you back your love, even as a reincarnation. You would love him all the same.

Swamp duo au,,, what does Cod Father think about new Jimmy and God Joel? Does he wonder what happened to Lizzie? She’s a god, surely she’s still around? Pearl! Pearl always seemed otherworldly? Or maybe Gem, she was always super smart, maybe she made an anti aging potion and is being all magical at Crystal Cliffs?
I am also rotating this at Mach speeds. Like the Mach speed frogs.
Rotate with me, anon. So fast we can generate electricity and never pay the power bill ever again...
I'm debating on how the new mcs relate to the old ones. In canon, at least for Sausage I think, they are reincarnations? I think the Jimmys are just different people. The Codfather sees the Sheriff and is reminded of when he held the Crown, someone a little too hungry for respect. Not that he doesn't deserve to be respected, but going about it the wrong way maybe. The Sheriff sees The Codfather and is mostly just weirded out at first.
God Joel, from an outside perspective, is strong, handsome, powerful, respected, competent. I think on first impression, The Codfather is maybe a little jealous? If he had been a better leader, more fit for the role, maybe he could have achieved this? The past is long enough gone for him to not be angry at it, but the thought sits like a stone in his stomach. God Joel seems to see everything with the same kind of indifferent comparison to himself. Most people are not gods like him, so why should he care if they're fish men or not? It's hinted in S1 canon that the seablings are at least a little bit unearthly, maybe that's encroaching enough into godly territory to peak his interest.
Jimmy of course has always wondered what happened to his fellow rulers (Those that didn't die during the rapture at least...) He knows they're all most likely dead after 1000 years but can't help but hold out hope. In the S1 finale I don't think Jimmy sees Lizzie lose her axolotl form, he may think she is also out there in some ocean. Does her losing that form cause her to loose her longevity as well, or is it still within her somewhere? Who is and isn't alive still, I haven't decided on. Most of my headcanons for implementing respawn and stuff into lore is similar to @/emdiart's empire marks concept which is very very good (Basically as long as you commit to your promise to tend to the land you call home, that land will protect you back and allow you to carry materials beyond your capacity/build quickly/come back from death/heal quickly etc. That is what it means to be an Emperor in this world). We have a canon answer for Pearl though! I'm sure that will come into play eventually...

I'm also kind of in the mood to talk about some AUs now that I think about it...so if anyone was curious about any of the AUs I've got, now's the time to poke me about 'em lmao.
Obviously there's Call of Honor, but I'll put short summaries of my other AUs under the cut:
COD AUs:
Venator: Cyberpunk fantasy AU set in the future in which Soap is a human priest, Price is a vampire...cop? kind of? (he's not really Police but he's the closest thing vampires/werewolves/other "fantasy creatures" have to social work and law enforcement), and Makarov is the Russian vampire equivalent of a mafia boss.
Apoptosis: Price is a Detective Sergeant investigating a series of murders in London, getting tangled up with Soap (a key witness) along the way. Spoiler alert: Makarov's the serial killer.
Oasisverse*: Bighuge fantasy AU that I and one of my partners share. Not a whole lot of solid lore and no big fic planned, but I've got a Lot of lore on Makarov in this AU and some bits of lore for Soap, Price, and Yuri.
Untitled Incubus AU: In which Soap and Makarov are both incubi. This AU isn't Entirely smut but obviously this is gonna be sex-heavy so heads up if you're not into that/you're a minor. The AU itself is untitled, but the two fics I'm planning for it are called Midnight Kiss (Soap/Price) and As You Wish (Makayuri).
Untitled Fashion Designer AU: In which Soap and Makarov make clothes basically.
*Oasisverse isn't strictly a COD AU—it's largely an OC playground for myself and my partner—but we do insert our favorite characters in the 'verse too, which is why I count it among one of my AUs!
Dishonored AUs:
Immram: Iron age fantasy AU in which Havelock (who's the Dishonored equivalent of a Norse whaler) goes on what's essentially an odyssey to find a lost artifact his village depends on. Feat. my oc Moira who's a Morleyan selkie.
Lorelei AU: Pirate AU in which Havelock starts a pirate fleet after being booted from the Navy, Corvo escapes from Coldridge on his own (with the Outsider's Mark), and the two of them team up and Fuck Shit Up. Very much High Chaos.
Also! I know already mentioned Call of Honor, BUT I figured I'd mention: I'm planning a couple of spinoff fics!
The first, with the working title The Way of Death, will follow Makarov's POV through the events of the entire saga (which is gonna be real fun, since he'll be AWOL for a large portion of Interim, and in TWOD we'll see exactly what he was up to :3c)
The second is a lighthearted...slice of life...coffee shop...fluff...romance AU in which everyone is reincarnated many years into the future and they all get to live completely normal lives. Working title is Operation Coffee Bean!
I'm also chewing on a High Chaos version of COH, which I'm considering making its own (shorter) spinoff once I've gotten through most of my other COH-related WIPs.

Hey. Hey au concept for a universe where every series is a different timeline/reincarnation/etc
Swap au with Empires!Flower Husbands and 3L!Flower Husbands
Maybe 3L!Scott gets swapped with Empires!Scott- the elven king wakes up in a tiny world in a tinier forest with a rival leader who, wait, thinks they're married? What? And learns with dawning horror exactly what the 3rd Life world is like. Meanwhile green-eyed Scott wakes up in Empires and finds he has a kingdom to run, or maybe something happens so that 3L!Scott arrives on Empires after 3L!Jimmy dies and is shocked to see him alive, and horrified to learn Jimmy only knows him as a cold and indifferent leader allied with the men who make Jimmy's life hell.
Maybe it's Jimmy who gets swapped- the cod king finds himself in 3rd Life with a Joel who burns down his walls for fun and a Scott who would burn the world down for him. 3L!Jimmy on Empires terrified of conflict who checks every pressure plate for traps, and who thinks every interaction with someone could end in bloody death.
Maybe both of them get swapped- the Empires duo on 3rd Life who fake being married to avoid arousing suspicion while still thinking of each other as enemies. 3L!Scott and Jimmy having to pretend not to be together.
And how do they deal with this, in any of these cases? Do they try to get back to their own world, or is the new world preferable in the end? Do they tell the other Players about being swapped, or keep it secret, or do they only tell each other? So many possibilities ahhh

So I keep hearing about Everything Turns to Gold, but I also don't watch Empires. Is the fic understandable for somebody not following Empires? Is there specific lore one needs to know before diving in?
You'll be pleased to know that at least one of my most delightful readers (Shade beloved) got into Empires at least in part because of this fic, and hadn't watched any of it beforehand, lol. Basically the only background one needs is:
-the basic premise of the server: 12 Empires, each ruled by a player -that Scott Smajor's elven empire of Rivendell had a plot arc where his long lost reincarnated brother (? it's complicated. Not sure if I ever did understand exactly what Xornoth was to Scott) appears and starts causing havok -Scott is apparently the avatar of the elven deer-god Aeor, and Xornoth is the avatar/servant of Aeor's fallen brother Exor. (There's a lot of brother stuff.) -fWhip at one point had (disconnected from the Aeor/Xornoth plotline) stolen the cod head that Jimmy was using as a symbol of his rule. It was a long-running prank feud and ended with fWhip putting the head in the End. The server hadn't fought the dragon yet, so he didn't think Jimmy would go after it -He was wrong. Jimmy rallied his allies and they went to the end to fight the dragon BUT-- -Unbeknownst to them, the dragon was the only thing keeping Exor contained and Xornoth from rising to his full power. So when they killed the dragon... Badness.
From there, I think everything else is self-explanatory. You miiiiiight want to glance at the Empires wiki? If you're entirely unfamiliar with the players and need a basic list of who's-who? But I'd like to think that EttG stands fairly well on its own. And, after the dragon fight it's 100% AU, so it has basically nothing to do with anything that's actually happened on the server since... ah. Like, September, lol.
Thanks for your interest, and if you decide to take the plunge, I hope you enjoy!

For All It’s Worth
Legend tells of a great war between two stags and their champions. Scott is the reincarnation of Aeor's champion, Alinar; but the reincarnation of Exor's champion, Connel, remains unknown to him.
He doesn't think he'll ever get the chance when crystalline corruption consumes the Empires he has come to know for centuries and leave only him and two others the sole survivors of the land.
That is when strangers come from worlds beyond his own, one such individual offering to use demigod-like powers to save them all.
But with this plan comes consequence, and with that consequence comes prophecy.
Inspired by @phoenixfyrebird‘s crossover AU where 3rd Life is after Empires and is where Scott finally meets Exor’s champion
Ao3 Link
--------------
For as long as Scott could remember, the twelve Empires had existed together; their rulers granted longevity of life and immortality from everything but old age due to ancient magic left behind by Gods when they banished a horrible corruption from the land centuries ago.
All elves knew the story, but Scott had only recently learned of the underlying prophecy that came with it. The reincarnations of Connel and Alinar would fight for their respective Gods in a battle for the fate of the world; and that failure to stop the evil of the former would lead to an eternal winter.
Scott knew that he was the reincarnation of Alinar but he had no idea who Connel was reborn as. He had suspicions of course; Fwhip's affinity for the crystalized redstone that corrupted whatever land was around it and Sausage's constant practicing of blood magic being the most likely in his mind, but so far they really didn't seem to give off 'reincarnation of a great evil' vibes, despite their chaotic and unhinged behavior.
Eras of war and peace came and went for them and, just when all twelve empires had found harmony, destruction arrived at their doorstep in a familiar form.
It was all an accident, but it claimed its cultivator first. Count Fwhip of the Grimlands had become infected and twisted by the very magic he studied until his own sister had to cut him down to save him from madness. Her kingdom fell shortly after along with that of the Undergrove and the Lost Empire.
Mezalea and the Ocean Empire were next to fall, the latter ruler sacrificing herself to save her husband. The Cod Empire where the heartbroken king settled was not spared, nor was the neighboring Mythland, whose ruler perished trying to help the Cod and Mezalian Kings. Pixandria's ruler went shortly thereafter, followed by those of Smallhold and House Blossom.
Rivendell was the only kingdom left unaffected, protected by the magic of Aeor. Twelve rulers had been reduced to a mere three in just a few months time, and even now the crystalline corruption had begun to creep closer, bypassing the protection of the elven kingdom.
Joel didn't want to die, for it was his wife's last wish that he survive.
Jimmy knew he had to live in order to keep the memories of the fallen alive
And Scott knew that as Aeor's champion, he could not surrender until the prophecy came to be
They would have to flee, leave everything they knew behind with nothing but what they could carry. Even then, though, the corruption would never slow, it would catch up to them eventually, it would consume everything in its path until nothing was left.
Still, they took their chances.
Several days they traveled, several days the corruption just followed them. Sometimes they'd get a few days of reprieve, others they barely had time to rest. While Scott himself could fly with his natural wings, Joel and Jimmy's elytras had long broken by this point and with no time to rest and repair them, they would be forced to walk from this point on.
It was a battle they knew they'd never win and the trio was well aware that they were on borrowed time, why bother running anymore?
But, that is when two purple rifts tore open nearby them, pulsating and hissing with magic unlike they'd ever seen. From these portals came people, eleven to be exact. Ten from one, and a single person from the other. They'd been told the stories and fables of worlds beyond their own, and these strangers couldn't have been from anywhere else with the entrances they made.
As it turned out, these strangers were the sole survivors of worlds that had faced destruction of their own. The first group, from a world they called Hermitcraft, had once housed twenty-six individuals; of them, only ten remained. When asked about the cause of their home's destruction, three of them had guilt flash across their faces.
Vengeful beings called Watchers had destroyed the world, punishment for the guilty trio's insolence. The avian in the red jumper was a Watcher himself once, but fled from them with the only two survivors of his original home, Evo. He used most of the power he had to open a portal and escape with the group behind him now.
As for the other, the man in a sleeveless and torn suit, he came from a world known as Legacy. He had not been there very long before Withers and the decay they brought with them consumed and torn it apart.
That was when the three former-kings shared their tale, lamenting that these individuals had only left behind two destroyed worlds in favor of what would soon be another. There was no escaping the crystalline corruption that inched closer and closer by the hour, it would consume them all in time.
However, there was a small ray of hope. The avian from Hermircraft explained that he had enough power left from his time as a Watcher to teleport them all far away from the corrupted lands and put up a barrier that would protect them should the corruption ever reach that far. It wasn't the most ideal scenario, but it was all they had. In agreement, the fourteen found themselves in an area protected within a 700 x 700 radius. Plenty of room to thrive, plenty of room to live...
...then they realized a fatal flaw.
The magic that brought them back upon death, Respawn Magic, as the world-jumpers had called it, was limited within such boundaries. The avian, Grian, deducted that there was only enough in the area to bring them all back twice. Three lives to live, they had to make them count.
It didn't take long for the universe to alert them to the next flaw. With the dwindling respawn magic came consequence; a slow decent into madness would come with each death. Those on their second life would grow paranoid, flighty, and hostile. Those on their last life became  chaotic, aggressive, and bloodthirsty.
Collectively, they decided to call this curse by a fitting name:
3rd Life
--------------
Scott and Jimmy had grown close in the journey prior to the current living accommodations the fourteen of them were faced with, and the two of them took up residence in a flower forest with Joel not too far off. Joel had been invited to live with them, but the former king could not bear to live with the now-lovers, heart still broken by the loss of his wife. Instead, he befriended wolves, living alone with his canine companions.
Hermitcrafts survivors scattered; Cleo, Bdubs, Impulse, and Tango in a castle, Scar and Grian now bound by debt settled in the desert, BigB lived on his own, and lastly Martyn, Ren, Etho and the one Legate survivor, Skizz, ran an enchanting business in the taiga.
Despite the lingering threats of limited respawn magic and the curse of death slowly leading to madness, things went relatively fine...until Scar fell into a ravine, costing him his first life.
After that, he became antagonistic and manipulative, getting whatever he wanted through fear from everyone he swindled...
...until he didn't. Ren didn't surrender to Scar's tyranny and remained defiant; something that cost the hybrid his first life, and the second ones of both Skizz and Jimmy. It also caused Ren to do something drastic, something that struck Scott with fear and realization.
Scott was present when Ren asked to be sacrificed by Martyn, as it was the only way to make him strong enough to bring about the Red Winter. At first, the elf had thought nothing of the words, but when Ren lifted his head and Scott saw the veins of corruption webbing across the hybrid's face, once-blue eyes now glowing red as blood and full of a lust for destruction and chaos, the pieces fell into place.
Despite everything Scott had not forgotten the prophecy he'd learned so long ago, and until that moment, he didn't expect to ever meet Exor's champion before dying to a fraying world. But before him stood the reincarnation of Connel, the harbinger of eternal winter.
That night, he confided the info and the prophecy to Jimmy and Joel, both of them in disbelief. They didn't get to talk about it much, however, before Ren and his Hand showed up and demanded tribute and sacrifice through threat and force.
Jimmy burned their banner in defiance and Scott's gaze met that of Ren, allowing him to see the realization that flashed in the Red King's eyes. He too, had made the connection; why else would he proceed to have Skizz to shoot Jimmy down in the desert when there were plenty of other targets? He wanted a reaction from Scott, he wanted to send a message.
Lives were taken, blood was spilled. Joel and Scott had been the hunters of Ren and Martyn at first, but now they were the hunted, pinned down in the crater of what had once been the desert. If the elf had any doubts about the hybrid's true identity before, they were gone now. Ren openly admitted to being Connel before lunching forwards with the intent to kill.
Scott heard the sound of a body being skewered onto metal, but upon opening his eyes he realized that it wasn't his body impaled on Ren's sword...it was Joel's.
"Run..." was the dying order given to him, and with a heavy heart Scott followed the command, making his way to the Crastle where he took refuge within the building's walls. That night, he told the tale, of the corruption and the eternal winter; of his destiny to stop Ren...no, Connel. He asked them to fight by his side in a final battle. They all agreed, they had vengeance in their hearts as well.
The battle of Dogwarts was brutal, crimson dying the water and staining the grass as it pooled from fallen bodies. Now, Scott faced Ren alone, the two of them the only survivors of their respective armies.
Like prophecy foretold they clashed, the reincarnations of Alinar and Connel fought with unyielding vigor, staining snow with blood as their weapons tore through flesh and arrows pierced through skin.
But only one of them would win, with a final cry full of anguish about those he'd lost, Scott drove his sword through Ren's heart. Exor's champion was dead, he had won.
The victory felt hollow to him; he was surrounded by bodies and had already buried countless more, he was the only one left in a fraying world and Scott could already see the crystalline corruption that'd taken everything from him already at the edges of the magical barrier. He was out of time...and there was still one life left to go.
After burring the bodies of the newly-fallen, ally and enemy alike, Scott made his way to the highest peak near Dogwarts...and let himself fall. His instinct told him to catch himself and fly, but he didn't listen, only welcomed the air blowing past his face.
A sickening crack...agonizing pain as bones shattered...and then blissful darkness.
--------------
Darkness...
Darkness...
Darkness...
Light...?
Scott's eyelids flickered open, light and color filling them as he looked at the sky from between the thick canopy of the jungle...
Wait, jungle?
He jolted up as the gears began to turn. He knew this place, but the last time he'd seen it, it was corrupted by red crystals and the colors of everything were far more vibrant compared to the muted shades they were now.
"There you are! I was wondering when you were going to show up!"
Scott's blood went cold at the voice...the last time he'd heard it was...
The elf dared to turn around, his heart skipping a beat at who he saw before him.
Dressed in his Codfather attire, stood Jimmy with a goofy grin on his face. Behind him, the rest of those that had ruled empires lost to corruption so, so long ago. "J-Jimmy? Guys? Where are...?"
Jimmy extended a hand and spoke "This is it, this is the end."
"Is it...home?"
"It's home, Scott. It's home."
