Kurei and Zuko

I just realised that Kurei from Flame of Recca is kinda like the original hardcore version of Zuko from Avatar: the Last airbender. I am not saying that their stories are the same, but they have a lot of similarities. For example:

1. They both have a burn scar on their left eye.

2. They both can create and control fire.

3. Both are firstborn royalty but are kinda thrown aside for their younger sibling.

4. Both have abusive childhoods where the main abuser is their father (or adoptive father in Kurei’s case).

5. Both were sepparated from their mother when they were fairly young (again in Kurei’s case both his biological and adoptive mother).

6. Both begins the series as antagonists with a very unfriendly personality but still has a person around them that knows that they have goodness in them and hopes for them to do better.

7. Both have a short period of peace when they think they can leave all the fighting behind them only to be brutally pulled back in again by the villain.

8. Both ends the series on friendly terms with the protagonist after going through personal trials and errors and become better people for it.

Of course there are a lot of differences too. Like Zuko is a more likable person and Kurei’s redemption only moves him from a villain to an antihero while Zuko makes a full faceturn. (may be because Kurei coldheartedly killed people and was a murdermachine until his loss to Recca.)

I have no idea if Bryke has seen Flame of Recca or if Kurei was part of the insperation to Zuko, just thought it was some neat parrarells.

im old and our networks didn't exactly have kid-safe anime so my first crush was rekka hanabishi (flame of recca, who treated his love interest like a princess). had i been slightly luckier, it would have been spike spiegel 💔 then in 7th grade, the year shippuden came out, i had the biggest (like, draw him in a school project 🤢 type of) crush on sasuke that gives me retrospective embarrassment at the mere sight of seeing him now, when the series is wildly more popular (aka acceptable) with the youngins... i'd like to believe that my taste has improved over the years...

heard everyone was starting a band! it's always nice to hear people pursue new and creative passions, so i hope everything works out!!✨
