In an interview with Gibson, Ray Burton, Cliff Burton’s father revealed what his son asked him before joining Metallica: “Cliff knew what he wanted to do and went out and did it. How could you not support a child who has that initiative already in their system and wanting to learn an occupation like that? The way he pursued music and the enthusiasm he showed toward the playing, we thought, ‘Well, let’s see what happens.'”“He came and said, ‘Can you support me for five years?’. Not long after that, it was absolute history.”

The #1 song from 50 years ago was Helen Reddy’s “I am Woman”.

I Am Woman
Songwriters: Helen Reddy and Ray Burton
I am woman, hear me roar
In numbers too big to ignore
And I know too much to go back and pretend
'Cause I've heard it all before
And I've been down there on the floor
No one's ever going to keep me down again
Whoa, yes, I am wise
But it's wisdom born of pain
Yes, I've paid the price
But look how much I gained
If I have to I can do anything
I am strong (strong)
I am invincible (invincible)
I am woman
You can bend but never break me
'Cause it only serves to make me
More determined to achieve my final goal
And I'll come back even stronger
Not a novice any longer
'Cause you've deepened the conviction in my soul
Whoa, yes, I am wise
But it's wisdom born of pain
Yes, I've paid the price
But look how much I gained
If I have to I can do anything
I am strong (strong)
I am invincible (invincible)
I am woman
I am woman, watch me grow
See me standing toe-to-toe
As I spread my loving arms across the land
But I'm still an embryo
With a long, long way to go
Until I make my brother understand
Whoa, yes, I am wise
But it's wisdom born of pain
Yes, I've paid the price
But look how much I gained
If I have to I can face anything
I am strong (strong)
I am invincible (invincible)
I am woman
Oh, I am woman
I am invincible
I am strong
I am woman
I am invincible
I am strong
I am woman

I posted this song in October 2020, somewhat as a tribute to Helen Reddy who had died just a couple of days earlier. I was just about to get started on my music post tonight when I read Sadje’s post and this song immediately came to mind and I was suddenly struck with a strong desire to hear the song once again!
The year was 1972 when at the height of what is now called the ‘feminist movement’,…

Kidnapper, over the phone: We have your child.
Weems: I don’t have children?
Kidnapper: She made us reevaluate all of our life choices and now we feel really bad for kidnapping her and wanting to blackmail you... we’re gonna turn our lives around and open an art studio now! She really encouraged us to become better people...
Weems: Oh my God, you have Miss Sinclair!
Kidnapper: Can you come pick her up?

"The Burtons were there (about Jason's audition for Metallica), you know both Burtons were alive then. They were so nice to me. Jan Burton grabbed me right away once the guys told me. Said 'you're the one, they know you're the one. Please, be safe.' That was heavy, that was heavy. They're passing Cliff's torch on, who's getting it?"
He's everything, he deserves everything.
