The Magnus Protocol Speculation (spoilers for TMAGP episodes 1 and 2 and general themes from TMA):
I've seen a few posts about how Protocol's introduction seems thematically opposite of TMA's introduction. Naturally I can't find them now, but the ideas that stuck out were: -the notes from Protocol's theme music being an inversion of Archive's theme -MAG 1's Anglerfish luring someone in, vs. the case of RedCanary, where something is decidedly trying to keep people out. -Alice's firm stance that Sam needs to stop digging and mentally dump everything he hears from a case might indicate a connection to The Dark (if anyone can find the posts I'm talking about, I'll happily edit them in. Tumblr's search is AWFUL)
All of this has me thinking about how the mission of The Magnus Institute and the mission of the OIAR could be complete opposites. The public-facing service the Institute provides, is this: if something inexplicable happens to you, you can come to the Institute, tell us about it, and we will investigate. The Institute will send a team (even if that team is just Martin with a flashlight), they'll try to figure it out, and you (the public) can be at ease. From what we've seen so far, the OIAR inverts everything: if something inexplicable happens to you, the obscure OIAR will find out, regardless of how private that information should be. The OIAR will take that information, and send it to… well, Alice seem to think "no one". It gets labelled and filed away to never be seen or acted upon. The people doing the labeling can be at ease - it's no longer in their hands, they don't need to worry about it. In fact, those who do worry about it and think too hard - Sam and Gwen - face backlash from the other workers. Someone Else Is Handling It.
Tumblr media
MAG 01 sees a new boss charged with cleaning up and organizing the old boss's mess to bring order. TMAGP 01 sees a new grunt worker being told to tiptoe around the mess and embrace chaos.
I don't subscribe to the idea that Smirke's 14 will be the same and relevant to Protocol. But if they were, I wouldn't be so quick to align the OIAR with the Dark alone. I see some high concept elements of the Buried here. Information isn't being concealed the way I'd expect with the Dark; it's being given a neatly informative headstone in the form of a DPHW index code and put Forever Deep Below.
And our team is going to have to DIG.

Did you know? From our perspective as players, the first time Pizza and Whiskey canonically spoke to each other was in their own respective bios. Though we could argue that the Magician in the Pizza event could be Whiskey in disguise (and I certainly think so too, too many things add up), it's never been cleared up.
And the last time they spoke face to face was in SP Pizza's bio, and SP Cassata's bio (tbh SPCass' bio feels more like an extension of SPizza's). Those stories either take place incredibly far into the future of this cycle, or in a different cycle. That's never confirmed.
Really funny now that I think of it that Pizza was never allowed to speak with Whiskey outside of those mentioned. But hey, after nearly six years since Pizza's debut and hoping that Funtoy gives us the Beef Wellington skin story event, I'll probably get to see this little fun thing in English:
Tumblr media
JP: 私が現れて興奮してるようだね一目見ただけでこんなに力強く引っ張るなんて。
DeepL (raw): You seem excited that I showed up. I can't believe how strongly you pull it off at first glance.
... Yeah, just for this tease, I'm going to properly do Wellington's skin event... you know, for research purposes. Ideally, this event will happen very soon for global.
On a sidenote, thanks to futagoyomi-san posting this on twt and mentioning which event it's in.

I'm trying to design a board game that features a large map of the United States made of hexagons. I've spent days pouring over which projection to use to preserve distance and direction as closely as possible, and then figuring out the sizes and quantities of hexagons I'd need in order to preserve the latitude and longitude grids, and what I came up with was approximately this
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
These are very rough sketches, but you can see how the longitude lines at the edges and center follow the hex grid (the US is almost exactly 60 degrees east to west, so the azimuthal projection worked perfectly), while the latitude lines are circle arcs, so I'd need to fill in some hexes underneath the two trapezoids shown in the third image.
The problem is that if I made each hex as big as I wanted them to be (1 inch tall), then the board would be nearly 5 feet by 10 feet, which is A LITTLE TOO BIG! If I scaled each hex down to 1/3 of an inch, it would be 3 feet by a foot and a half, which is like two Monopoly boards next to each other (about the same size as Risk). That's better, but it makes the hexes too small to play on; how are you supposed to keep track of where your pieces belong when each space is a third of an inch? It would be way too clustered. This means I need bigger hexes, and fewer of them, which means sacrificing a lot of detail I was hoping to include.
This project is WAY too ambitious, so I'll probably end up scaling it way down to a single state instead of the whole country, but it's got my creative juices a'flowing and it's distracting me from other projects I could actually potentially finish, so my brain has chosen to fixate on this for the foreseeable future.
I feel like either a genius or a madman, creating page after page of incomprehensible figures. The numbers, they sing to me... Can you not hear their music?
I dunno. Something about creating grids of hexagons in crude mspaint soothes me. Very mathematical, but with zero technical skills required. I'm also very reliant on this triangle calculator because trigonometry is where math starts becoming white noise for me; I'm an algebra wizard, I could teach it with my eyes closed, but I can't do trig in my head, and calc is completely beyond me.

Wild ass prompt - you guys know how in Armored Core 6, the third ending, Alea Iacta Est, is basically the perfect setup for crossover fanfiction? Okay, so hear me out - instead of being flung to some watery planet, Raven and Ayre end up in Kivotos. Maybe in a fountain or something, it'd be funny. Or a pool.
Imagine trying to explain a big fuckoff robot whose pilot doesn't speak and has a hot Coral Wave Mutation waifu in his head that calls him studmuffin? Oh yeah baby, I'm talking about Crack Raven. Honestly, I think the version from "World's Okayest Lobotomite" would be best, it's just the perfect blend of crack and serious.
Like, oh no! Wakamo is gonna blow up S.C.H.A.L.E.? No the fuck she ain't, because Raven had a gun with a caliber bigger than her entire body. I'm just imagining Raven standing behind her (don't ask how he snuck up on her with a giant mech) and pointing his gun at her and she like slowly turns around when she notices the big fucking shadow blocking out the sun. Cue a gun barrel in her face that could genuinely fit her inside like when you cover a bug with a cup. In fact that's actually a very funny joke, too. Raven doesn't wanna blow some "poor" girl (and the surrounding infrastructure) up so he just stuffs her in his gun barrel. Bc let's be real Wakamo is a fucking lvl. 3 grunt compared to what kind of explosive missions (or "blow jobs" for short) Raven enjoys.

Putting this down here as more my own note taking about the Desire Tavern members popping up here and there after the Brandy event. Specifically after that event because they were part of the main roster and appeared quite frequently. Mind you, this is also littered with speculations and some headcanon stuff.
It's also interesting to note that Spaghetti seems to be interested in the whereabouts of the "Wheel of Time", though of course he's just one of many parties interested in that artifact, whether as pieces or as a whole. It's still unknown what he needs it for, or if he's tracking it down for someone else (Whiskey comes to mind). The intention is up in the air and knowing Funtoy's current state of affairs, I'll assume I'll never get closure on that front (amongst other things).
In the Kiviak event, Stargazey Pie arrived at the Dragon Lair on Spaghetti's information that the "Wheel of Time"… at least one of its shards, would make an appearance there. She buys some jewelry that catches her eye from Red Velvet, who after finding out Stargazey is interested in the 'shards', leads her to the Auction part of the building.
As it's a sidestory and Stargazey doesn't show up in the event's conclusion nor in any other sidestory thereafter, we'll assume she was only able to gather information for Spaghetti. It's also unknown if her original intention was to buy the Wheel of Time's shard, or simply to observe and confirm what happens to it.
As a side note, Stargazey looks to have matured a little more with her lines. She still fancies pretty things (including hands) and wants to have them, but her spoiled nature seems to have been curbed and doesn't throw a tantrum when she can't have something. I guess Spaghetti and the rest of the girls have been somewhat of a positive influence in that area.
The next appearance is in Kaiserschmarrn's event. Spaghetti and Oyster make an appearance (my heart!) as a response to a peculiar letter that arrived at their tavern begging for them to rescue the children from the circus. As context, that letter was penned by a young girl who befriended one of the circus children since the circus child didn't know how to write. That same young girl told the child about the wish granting tavern in Nevras and offered to get her wish out to be rescued.
In the duo's conversation, Spaghetti claims they both came here out of curiosity despite, as Oyster pointed out, that the wish did not comply with their rules. This suggests that any time they receive a wish that did not follow their criteria, it would be left unanswered. And yet interestingly, they answered this one 'out of curiosity' and even Oyster decided to come along when children became a factor, per Spaghetti's words.
'Circus children, customers of various backgrounds... With a little imagination, it could be a crime thriller. Maybe we'll even catch a few nobles while we're at it.'
This line causes me some confusion, more specifically the last one. Putting aside possible sub-par translation, Spaghetti's probably thinking they could catch some ne'er do well nobles in some atrocious acts if they uncover something nasty. So they're still doing their vigilante stuff... ah, Spaghetti, keep being the villain that you are.
Though the sidestory ends with both of them seeing Beer terrorizing a child with his insistent singing. A very random way to end this, especially since there's not even a cliffhanger to this with Beer noticing the two Food Souls at all. Funtoy, wtf?
Add to that, the main event again has none of them popping up. And the one sidestory that acts as an epilogue for the children and Feijoada's fates... doesn't tell me what happens to the children.
Feijoada was offered rescue by a mysterious man— That's just Baklava I'm certain by what little I know about other FS connections, and it cuts there.
Now I'm hoping that it means Baklava helps Feijoada and the children get to town. But that now leaves the subject of whether Spaghetti and Oyster decided to drop their curious pursuit or they'll do something about the children. There's also the matter of Beer appearing within Oyster and Spaghetti's proximity, and from what I do know from Oyster's bio, Beer definitely doesn't hold Spaghetti in high regard but who knows? Spaghetti is probably a necessary evil at this point for certain things to go 'correctly' for this timeline to achieve a good ending (see SP Beer bio, and also see SP B52 bio for what happens if Spaghetti strays off his purpose as a lynchpin for the Desire Tavern existing). So basically it's vague enough that I can just think of something and it will just fill in the gaps.
Insofar, that's all of the current appearances. I'll have to keep an eye on things to see where else they show up but honestly I'm just here to find as many Spaghetti crumbs as possible.

I want to study Godrick's horrid anatomy. I wanna see how his muscles connect to eachother, see how many femurs he needs to support himself, see if he's riddled with scars or preforms enough skin grafts to keep his complexion mostly unmarred. He's a fascinating individual, certainly, but most importantly i would love to see how all the external parts connect to his true body in the middle. My leading theory is a lot of tendons as pulleys... like some wretched meat mecha

continution of stormlight au 14, where kaladin keeps it together just a little longer:
Adolin: Storms! So both you and bridgeboy have been radiants—
Kaladin: surgebinders.
Adolin: surgebinders, this whole time? Unbelievable! Anyone else here secretly a surgebinder?
Renarin:
Shallan: I— your cousin. Jasnah. She didn't have a soulcaster. She was one.
Kaladin: Wait. I thought you said she died.
Shallan: Radiants can be killed! She had a sword through her chest!
Kaladin: I mean...I haven't tested that out specifically. But I've been shot a lot. And I was basically flayed alive. Teft nursed me back to life with a few diamond chips.
Adolin: Hah! The assassin did get you with a shardblade, didn't he? And you healed from it!
Navani: I knew it. She's impossible to kill.
Shallan: I— but I sank the boat. Oh stormfather...
Kaladin: I can also survive without breathing a while. 20 minutes easily. haven't timed my limits.
Adolin:
Shallan:
Shallan: I — wait, did you say you were flayed alive? What? Why?
Kaladin: It's — it's how the whole stormblessed title happened. Got strung up in a highstorm.
Adolin: Huh. At this point I was wondering if you got the title talking to the stormfather himself, ha!
Kaladin:
Adolin: ....Bridgeboy?
Kaladin: It. I mean during highstorms sometimes...
Adolin: I swear if you say you thought it was a hallucination I'm throwing you as far as I can. And I'm wearing plate right now.
Kaladin: It— it can't have been real.
Adolin: I'll do it bridgeboy. I know you can take it.
Kaladin: Fine. Anyway. That's how I got the stormblessed name. Sadeas ordered me outside, left upside down in a highstorm. Not fun, but I lived.
Shallan: So... she really could be alive...
Adolin: My captain of the guard, my bethrothed, and my cousin! Ha! Renarin, you'd tell me if you were a radiant — I mean a surgebinder, right?
Renarin:
Adolin: Renarin?
Renarin:
Adolin: Renarin...I...but why wouldn't you tell me?
Renarin (crying): I thought I was going mad. I was seeing things, I could hear screaming from my shardblade...
Kaladin: I hear that too!
Shallan: There's...something wrong with most shardblades.
Renarin: I thought it was...
Adolin (gripping Renarin's shoulder): Brother.
Adolin: I don't think hallucinations are real.

You either get it or you don't. Sam and Dean had to pack lightly. They couldn't get too attached to anything. At a moment's notice, they might've had to drop everything and run. There's an army man Sam wedged into the ashtray of the Impala. Lego blocks Dean jammed into the vents. They're not there because they were boys being boys trashing their dad's old whip. If Sam and Dean loved something, really loved it, the only way to keep it was to make it a part of the one thing that went with them everywhere. It's not one or the other. Both long to be strong enough to possess something, protect it, and fend off those that would steal it away. Both of them are still the same kids that had to leave behind something they didn't want to when Dad said, "let's skedaddle." They both still ache with pangs for all they've left behind over the years. They both still wallow in the unfairness.
It's not as simple as refusing to allow death to take the other away. Not so simple as staying by each other's side. Sam and Dean are fused. That's the only way they know how to keep something they love. They're tired of being helpless little kids crying about how life or death isn't fair. They retaliate against any oppositional force that might separate them with the vindictive wrath of a child bereaved and denied one too many times. If you pull something away from the hands of a child enough, the grip they have as adults will be ironclad. Sam and Dean hold onto each other with iron hands. They make any who would dare attempt to keep them apart taste their steel.
They used to be scared of the things that would take them away from each other. Now, the things that would take them away from each other are scared of them. Look, you either get it or you don't. 🤷

for archival reasons, and because rise has officially ended, i'm coping by looking back at the past two years and thinking about the master utsushi rabbit hole. this is based on a long reply i sent to a mutual but i think it deserved to have its own post where others can read it and i can expand further on certain details. or something. i don't know. i have no idea who will read this but if you do, please enjoy...
the ballad of master utsushi.
he was there regardless.
always watching.
waiting.
Tumblr media
i wound up getting attached to utsushi-kyokan (master/instructor utsushi), ウツハン/utsuhan (utsushi x hunter) ship, and finding his Japanese fan community late 2021, and i've been chatting with mutuals and friends i made there since. at that time, capcom had opened up pre-orders for his nui (plushie). this plush is lovingly referred to as "Unui-kun", and people love to take him around and bring him places. here's my Unui-kun in new york city lol
Tumblr media
fans love to dress him up and make clothing and accessories for him. had i known just how attached i would become, i would not have set my Unui-kun to ship via surface mail delivery because it took about 2-3 months extra for him to arrive... ;;
but anyway, it seemed that his popularity was growing because they continued to make more merch of him. he seems to have more than any of the other characters.
Tumblr media
many of these are limited print/pre-order only, or were from specific events like the capcom cafe features. trying to get his merchandise became crazy, because scalpers started to pick up on how badly people wanted goodies of him?!
Tumblr media
just how popular is this guy?! what's with the character tax!!
and how did this even happen... we're playing monster hunter, not an idol game! but i think it really speaks a lot for itself how rise had such colorful characters that you could get attached to. it seems he really jives with many female and queer players, so good on capcom for that hehe. many of the japanese fans i've met are either older women, very often mothers, or gnc, which i found to be really cool. the english-speaking utsushi fans are usually the same, too. the solidarity is real...
I found out that a lot of ppl, including myself, shared a similar experience: they missed out on a majority of utsushi's flavor text in base rise bc they didn't talk to him or the other NPCs very much during village and high rank quests, and therefore didn't even think much of him until after the fact. people double-taking when going through the game again and actually catching on to his antics... I think what really got things going was when they released his DLC voice and learned about his, uh, extremely affectionate lines towards the hunter when it comes to mew mew and blowing a kiss LOL. (the "welcome back, master!" line?!?! there's so much art of him in a maid outfit... and the way he says ace/manadeshi in his sleep at the table?!?! scandalous?!?!) even for me, he got my attention only once i saw the official art of him (realizing "hey he's got a cute design actually") and eventually encountering utsushi x hunter fanart on pixiv. another thing that got me noticing him was brian david gilbert's now deleted tweet about how zac efron and utsushi are the same. thankfully, we have the internet archive to save the existence of this post and i have to make sure people experience this lost media.
once i realized how weirdly close he was to the hunter, the gears started turning
i confirmed that ppl really did notice that it was unusual for an instructor character to refer to his pupil as "manadeshi (beloved/dearest disciple)" in the manner that he does, being so close to them in a way that felt so familiar and warm. he was already popular enough that by valentine's day 2022, fans literally sent real chocolates to capcom addressed to utsushi. i knew about this for a while, but i was shook that they wound up officially addressing that this really happened during the last update video.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
after they received his chocolates, they immediately got one of the (female) illustrators on board to quickly draw that really cute valentine's day art of utsushi. the japanese tweet for that artwork had even a little bit more text than the english one…
Tumblr media
that "i'll always be watching over you" line…
(and while i'm here, i have to mention the valentine's day art we got for 2023- i made a separate post about THAT.)
we started to suspect capcom caught on to this niche community's love for utsushi, and they started to kind of... troll us??? LOL.
throughout the previews of sunbreak last year, they would start obsessively sneaking utsushi into those chibi artworks. and when npc followers were announced, people were scrambling to find out if he was going to be one of them, but there also was some weird radio silence about him for a bit...
in one of the earlier trailers that showed the elgado hub for the first time, there was a very short part of the clip where ppl could see someone standing in the distance at the corner of the screen. all the utsushi fans went nuts because they were taking a magnifying glass and zooming up at there wondering if it was really him, because everyone wanted him to be there in sunbreak LOL.
Tumblr media
of course we'd eventually find out that would be his perch for most of the game! it was only during the final preview trailer before the release of sunbreak did they finally announce utsushi as a follower, as if they were saving the best for last. and sunbreak dropped, we got to see him in elgado and enjoy hunting with him. and it didn't end there. he wound up being featured in two of the short stories released last summer, and we would not forget this incident.
when i think about how easy it is to just play through the story and miss out on following specific out-of-the-way flavor texts, let alone know about all this outside of the game, i wonder if utsushi joining the hunter in the battle against amatsu in the penultimate battle was strange, because he has such a spotlight on him, even being the one who allows you to ride an apex which was normally impossible. if people didn't acknowledge him before, certainly people would love him now.
his final line after you defeat amatsu: it's cute and silly in english... but in japanese, his line and delivery was extremely, almost unabashedly... romantic. many people were shocked because it sounded like a fervent confession.
"I'll say it once more... You are my pride, my beloved disciple."
finally, during the last update video…
Tumblr media
we got this line straight from the director LOL. utsushi wound up being his personal favorite character in rise, and perhaps why we wound up seeing more and more of him in sunbreak.
all in all, if you kept up with the flavor text of rise, and if you followed utsushi's dialogue throughout the base game and expansion, the emotional pay off at the end was even better! and it is a shame when this stuff is mostly optional or you have to go out of the way for it, with so much being missable with every bit of progression. but making a monhun where story and character interactions are pushed more… i think they were on to something. it's probably something that could be divisive, but personally I think they should go all in on it more in the future. Rise proved that they could make charming and memorable (not to mention, named) characters... if they lean into it more in a future entry, then i hope they do it in a way where everyone can enjoy it and not feel like they missed out. but I also hope they would make it so that people don't feel overwhelmed with flavor text... it comes down to taste, but i think i have faith that monhun can try making more character-driven stories while still keeping the core of the series in tact.
here are some more miscellaneous utsushi things that i didn't know how to fit in earlier:
he's been featured multiple times in capcom cafe entrees. here's his matcha latte dango drink:
Tumblr media
and for the sunbreak stories: a cake based on his fight with rathalos together with the royal guard, and then a drink that represents his... uh, struggle across the ocean to chase the hunter to elgado. because they will never let him live that down. i won't either.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
here's a t-shirt of utsushi and kagami you can pick up on amazon right now. kagami was a very interesting arc when he was first shown- he was introduced as a long time friend of utsushi, training together in the past, but eventually parting ways.
Tumblr media
his seiyuu in japanese is a sentai actor who loves monster hunter, so essentially, kagami is lowkey like a self-insert for him lol. he's goofy in english because he's voiced by a certain youtuber, but in japanese he takes a different direction of silly because he has a "chuunibyou" edgelord cringe way of talking. it's such a shame that kagami wasn't really in the game itself besides being mentioned in a few mission descriptions because i would've loved to see him interact with utsushi and the hunter, and i wish the royal knights and many of the NPCs had more cutscenes or something. it makes me think, if it weren't for the pandemic, could rise's story and scenario have been something more because of the DLC voice characters like hibasa/monju/kagami? anyway, a popular headcanon is that utsushi and kagami are ex-boyfriends lol (i personally like this one and adapted it for my utsuhan fanfics). but there are even those who ship kagautsu too (although it is rare because people overseas are a little wary of shipping characters who are based on real people).
Tumblr media
and lastly, one of my personal favorites... the diseased kyokan shirt. this is from an online capcom shop, and you can use a proxy service like fromjapan.com to order it.
if you read this all, thank you! happy hunting! with the instructor! we love that guy! the guy of all time!
