on the subject of nintendo hype, i also miss pokemon hype pre XY (which are already 11 years old, wow !), which i know is : 1- oddly specific 2- really old ? i'm talking about basically, back in 2006-2007. now, while i was pretty much a kid back then, i remember that the internet was only useful for three things for me back then : 1 cartoon/anime openings (the dragonball Z op was the first thing i ever searched for on youtube) 2 videogame help and 3 pokemon. whenever i had access to the internet, i'd look for stupid fan art of pokemon fusions, fanfics shipping a variety of the characters from the series and news on the games.

the reason why i specified before XY is because Pokemon X/Y were the first episodes of the series to be announced globally.

on tuesday 8th of january 2013, pokemon xy was announced. i remember running home from school at 12 to open my laptop (that i had left on in the morning so i wouldn't waste a single second) to see the trailer

you have to understand that before, the games were first announced in japan, released there and then eventually announced for the rest of the world (europe, usa) and released. this was a BIG event. but prior to xy, unless you could speak japanese and lived there, you were practically left in the dark about the most recent pokemon news/events. "why not watch the trailer in japanese then and quit dramatizing past events lol ? "

the reason is that back then, a trailer was the culmination of months and months of mystery and hype. you didn't get the trailer first. rumors would circulate from "insiders" and so called trust worthy leakers from japanese and american image boards that a game was in the works (and these rumors would usually start 6-9 months after the release of the most recent mainline game), then speculations about the region, thematic, features would start; i remember how each gen we had someone saying "this time, we'll be able to explore ALL regions !" or "this is going to be open-world in 3d on the TV console !".

remember : the internet was a much more decentralized entity back in the mid/late 00's. information did not drip down from a single verified source on 3-4 social media accounts ; it spread unevenly, gathering misinformation, theories and the interpretation of the relayer along the way. you're probably going to ask "well, if you didn't get it from the official twitter/facebook (this is 2008), where did you get the info from ?"

we got it the old fashioned way. i present to you, the corocoro magazine

the magazine, launched in 1977 is a children's mag that advertised a variety of manga and most importantly video games to a younger audience. and you would not believe how dependant the online pokemon community was on this magazine : any info concerning a new game, teasers, shadows for the shapes of starters would be there. mind you, google trad was not as developped as it is today : you couldn't just up and whip out your phone to translate the text from your computer screen. you had to wait for translators to do so; and boy, was it exciting. i remember how on the french pokemon bubble, it was a race between various websites to translate the info first ; either from the english translation, or directly from the source, if they could comprehend japanese.

and since i mentionned shadows, here is a tradition that sadly disappeared : shadows of the new gen starters as a teaser. surely, i don't have to name or even show you the starters on the picture above for you to recognize them. instead, let us see how creative such teasers got the community :

and so it went on: drip fed teasers, leaks and speculations about info that we take for granted now, like the very names of the new pokemon in english, of the rival and the game's evil team, new or returning mechanics, etc. the hype would go on, info would become clear as we near the japanese release, then once it does, we all sit behind our screens jealous at the lucky ones who either lived in japan or uhm, accidentally received an online package containing a rip of the game's file (jokes aside to avoid getting censored, if this was the case, the games would have safety patches that didn't allow it to be read by the current firmware of jailbroken consoles).

the lucky ones would document their adventure, some try to prepare guides in advance for the international release, others cook-up fan translations ; and at that point, theories have begun. all before we even get the game !

to be honest, i did not expect this to be this long, but as i wrote, i remembered more and more, and like an old sailor, got to recall why i was so excited for pokemon back then. i lived for the hype : play pokemon, next game gets announced, get on the hype train, write theories, debate with other fans on forums, convince people that we're not getting a 3rd gen remake on the Nintendo DS, game releases, rinse, wash and repeat.

to me, this entire topic is an interesting look at the aspect of a bigger topic; the centralization of the internet over the years and the controlled spread of information. of course, i won't get into this here or now, but i'll also add that whatever i put down does somewhat apply to not only nintendo but also games from japanese manufacturers as well : even more obscure light novels on ps4 are getting releases in various languages now. before, you needed a japanese console to play japanese games, a german game would not work on an american console, etc. i am not necessarily nostalgic for this - it was annoying, and some of us missed many games because of it. but i will admit that the absence of teasers and hype when you can just datamine or immediately get the info on twitter from a game dev is saddening. i shall leave you, dear reader, with this trailer for pokemon black and white 2 that had me excited for a month :

Séance #09 - Le numérique, nouveau relayeur de l'information ?

Internet a bouleversé de nombreuses habitudes de vie et a transformé notre quotidien, dont la prise d’informations. Ce n’est un secret pour personne, les médias traditionnels d’information tels que les journaux papier, les magazines ou encore les journaux télévisés et la radio perdent d’année en année un peu plus de public qui préfère se diriger vers les médias sociaux et le numérique plus généralement. Mais alors pourquoi ces derniers sont de plus en plus préférés aux médias traditionnels ?

Il est important de préciser que désormais, les médias sociaux sont l’une (si ce n’est la) des principales sources d’information sur Internet allant même jusqu’à dépasser les moteurs de recherche et étant même presque la seule source d’information pour les plus jeunes (YouTube, Tedx Talkes, 2min24). Mais alors pourquoi ? Tout d’abord, les médias sociaux offrent l’instantanéité de l’information (Grenier aux nouvelles, 2019, p.1) ce qui n’est pas le cas des médias traditionnels. De plus, les médias sociaux ainsi que le numérique en général se veulent plus « précis » que les médias traditionnels dans le sens où l’on obtenir l’information exacte que l’on souhaite obtenir à l’aide d’une recherche. En effet d’après une étude, « 85,7% des Français pensent que les informations sont plus faciles d’accès sur les réseaux sociaux » (Mydigitalweek, 2021, p.3). On peut ajouter à cela également une notion de praticité et de simplicité de l’information. Toujours dans la même étude, on estime que 57,1% des Français interrogés trouvent que le contenu est plus digest et surtout plus court sur Internet (Mydigitalweek, 2021, p.3). De plus, le numérique donne lieu des interactions que ne permettent pas les médias traditionnels. Lorsqu’une nouvelle est publiée sur les médias sociaux, les utilisateurs ont la possibilité d’exprimer leur opinion ou leurs sentiments vis-à-vis de la nouvelle en la commentant directement ou bien en la partageant sur sa page ou encore en la transférant à des amis. Pour pallier cela, on assiste donc à la digitalisation des médias traditionnels qui créent à leur tour des sites Internet ainsi que des comptes sur les médias sociaux populaires comme Facebook, Instagram ou encore Twitter. Cette digitalisation est essentielle, car avec la numérisation de l’information, de nombreux abus voient le jour tel que les dérives du journalisme citoyen. Bien que cette pratique, de base, soit une excellente chose comme Ohmynews, journal citoyen sud-coréen dans les années 2000 (OpenEdition, s.d, p.2), de nombreuses diffusions de fausses informations sont la conséquence du journalisme citoyen et des médias sociaux plus généralement et c’est pour cela qu’il est important de vérifier ses sources avant de les relayer.

Pour conclure, les médias sociaux sont de plus en plus utilisés afin de s’informer dans un contexte de numérisation de la société, donnant naissance à de nouveaux mouvements tels que le journalisme citoyen ainsi que les dérives qui l’accompagnent tels que la propagation de fausses informations. Pour pallier cela, les médias traditionnels se sont adaptés en se numérisant à leur tour.

Not me wondering who had the best ski time in the third leg of the women’s relay and checking all the teams one by one until I remembered that Slovenia usually puts Anamarija Lampic as third relayer and sure thing there she was. Best ski time, but three penalty loops unfortunately.

Following her this season is really interesting because since the beginning she’s regularly had the best ski time but many shooting misses except for the last few races in the championships (if I recall correctly), where she didn’t have the best ski time but managed her shooting more easily. It really goes to show how skiing fast is not always the answer in biathlon. You have to control your skiing speed so that your heartbeat on the shooting range is not too high.

Bruford is a honorable man that will do things he feels is necessary. Tarkus is a rude woman that does whatever she wants when she wants

nstead of being knights themselves they are descendants of knights! They sadly dont have the glory their ancestors had.. They work for a rude and wealthy man that they both despise. Together after planning it for quite sometime, they ran away from their home n England to join the race n America. It was risky but somehow they did it! Their goal is to win the money and live off of it.

Matchmaking for the Greater Evil (1/4)

It starts during the Sunshot Campaign.

Jiang Wanyin is, barring Chifeng-zun himself, the most powerful and enthusiastic supporter of taking down the Wen Sect.  His drive attracts rogues and new cultivators like flies to honey, then he trains Jiang Sect’s new recruits to standards that impress even Nie Minjue.  He’s a hurricane on the battlefield, aggressively clearing out the enemy with floods of purple-clad soldiers, swift passes of Sandu, and burning strikes of Zidian.

Unfortunately, he’s a hurricane off the battlefield too.  He’s far, far too aggressive, plunging deep into Wen territory, forcing their other allies to race to catch up to him, driving his men into exhaustion, never retreating no matter the tactical situation.  Only Sect Leader Nie is spared his acid tongue, probably because Nie Mingjue’s the only person on their side that Jiang Wanyin actually respects.  Being the most frequent relayer of other’s orders to slow down, halt or even retreat, Meng Yao experiences the brunt of Sect Leader Jiang’s displeasure and the man is rapidly becoming a massive headache for him.

He hopes that when Wei Wuxian is finally found again, that it will calm some of the younger man’s temper, but unfortunately the recovery of Jiang Sect’s First Disciple seems to spur Jiang Wanyin to even greater heights of aggression.  The only silver lining, in this case, is that with the corpses doing a great deal of the heavy lifting, the Jiang Sect soldiers are finally getting from the constant battle and are no longer in so much danger of burn-out.

Reprieve comes from an unlikely source.  Nie Huiasang, like many other Qinghe non-combatants, has been sent to the Cloud Recesses, but he’s not letting that stop him from assisting.  He’s taken over most of Meng Yao’s former quartermaster duties and compiling reports from the territories they conquer.  Nothing that directly impacts the front, that’s still going to Meng Yao’s desk, but stuff about destroyed infrastructure and population, things they are going to need to know after the war is over and rebuilding has begun.  It mostly keeps the younger Nie away from the frontlines, but he occasionally accompanies dispatch and supply caravans in order to get a bet picture of the front and carry sensitive messages.

One such trip brings him to a Jiang war camp . . . with orders for Jiang Wanyin to retreat back up the valley and help Lan Wangji secure another Supervisory Office.  The orders come from Lan Quiren.

Meng Yao suppresses a wince, then steps up to shield the Young Master from Jiang Wanyin’s temper.  But to his surprise, Jiang Wanyin grumbles and shouts but does in fact order his men to pack up and prepare to retreat.  And without any prompting or coaxing from anyone else!  It’s such a surprise, he barely registers when A-Sang latches onto him and complains about being dragged to this horrid place and not being able to see Da-Ge before having to go back to the Cloud Recesses again.

Huiasang doesn’t come with orders for Sect Leader Jiang very often and Meng Yao ends up defecting to the Wens halfway through the war, but each and every time he does, Meng Yao observes the same pattern.  Jiang Wanyin will complain and shout and yell about losing ground, but he’ll automatically comply without needing Meng Yao or Lan Wangji breathing down his neck.  Even the quality of his shouting is different, still as loud as ever but without the bitter edge that indicates he’s about to attack the messenger for not giving him the orders to push, push and keep pushing ahead.  Huaisang complains too, but given that Jiang Wanyin never lays a hand on him, Meng Yao considers it a pretty big statement of how tolerant the Jiang Sect Leader is with his former classmate.  Meng Yao hasn’t been attacked either, but Meng Yao has had a lifetime of experience calming angry people and he knows it’s happened to other messengers.

It continues after the Seige at the Burial Mounds.  The Jin Sect is at its wit’s end, trying to dislodge Sect Leader Jiang from haunting (Lady Jin’s words, not Guanyao’s) Carp Tower.  Despite being concerned with rebuilding his own Sect, the man shows up religiously every month to check in on his nephew.  Finally, after that first year, Nie Huiasang makes the suggestion that they send little Jing Ling to Lotus Pier, to be raised by his uncle.  Jin Guanyao happily seizes upon the idea.  With his own marriage to Quin Su coming up and her pregnancy, having Jin Ling potentially be Lotus Pier’s heir rather than Carp Tower got him out of the way neatly.

He half expects Nie Huiasang to be back within the week, complaining about Jiang’s harsh behavior, but the boy sticks it out for six whole months, before being called back to Qinghe by his brother.  It’s the start of Huiasang’s busy traveling schedule for the next few years, shuffling back and forth between Qinghe, Lanling, and Yunmeng, carrying messages and observations to each of them.  Xingchen even jokes that Huiasang should add Gusu to his travel route, otherwise the only time he ever sees the younger is when the Lan Sect Leader visits Lanling.

It doesn’t last.  When Jin Rulan is five and Jin Rusong is four, Jin Guanyao brings up the ideas of the watchtowers, and certain elements take revenge by targeting Rusong.  Someone needs to tell Sect Leader Jiang that he will no longer have exclusive custody of Jin Ling, but there are no more couriers in Carp Tower willing to go to Yunmeng and this is not the type of thing that can be sent via spiritual messenger or one of Huiasang’s birds.  Out of options, he sends Huiasang himself and prays that he’s not sending his little brother to his death.

To his surprise, A-Sang comes back intact with Jin Ling, dressed in Yunmeng purple, a small army of Jiang Sect cultivators, and Jiang Wanyin himself.  The walking headache is as vicious as ever, not willing to let his only remaining relative out of his control.  It’s a strenuous week of negotiation that makes him contemplate the murder of all the involved parties more than once, but a compromise is finally hashed out, with Jin Ling to spend half of each year at Carp Tower and the other half at Lotus Pier, at least until either Jin Guanshan, Jin Guanyao or Jiang Wanyin produces another viable heir.  Jin Guanyao celebrates by getting blackout drunk with Huiasang.

That solidifies Nie Huiasang’s position in his schemes.  No matter what skills the boy does or does not demonstrate, the one consistency is that he has become Lanling’s unofficial messenger to Yunmeng.  Need to impose new tariffs on weapons?  Huiasang gets sent.  Jing Ling fought with his classmates again?  A-Sang, Lotus Pier is lovely at this time, please paint a picture of it for Quin Su.  Jin Guanshan just died, and Jin Ling’s going to have another stay another month at Lanling for the funeral?  Take this gift with my compliments to Sect Leader Jiang, and feel free to say for the entire month.  Just make sure you’re back in time to escort Jin Ling to his uncle.

The only time he doesn’t send A-Sang anywhere is just after Da-Ge was put to rest.  There are few things that could possibly be more upsetting during the mourning period than dealing with Sect Leader Jiang and Jin Guanyao isn’t cruel if he doesn’t have to be.  Huiasang begs off attending the next two Cultivator Conferences and Jin Guanyao gladly takes up the responsibility of inter-sect relations for the Unclean Realm, it’s the least he could do for his little brother.  And when he finds out Jiang Wanyin had barged into Huiasang’s seclusion, he takes the journey to Lotus Pier himself to chew out the other Sect Leader.  After all, if Jiang Wanyin is actually interested in Huiasang, he should have the decency to go through Huiasang’s protectors.

(Really, the only thing that could be worse is if Huiasang found out what really happened.)

Croyances mortelles et folie du monde : qui a engendré l'autre ?

  Pendant que, en France, le milieu universitaire s’écharpe autour d’un ‘’islamo-gauchisme'' nié par ses promoteurs, on découvre qu'une étudiante de la belle université canadienne McGill a porté plainte contre un professeur de littérature québecoise, sous prétexte qu’elle n'avait pas été prévenue qu’un roman qui était ''à étudier'' contenait un terme ''offensant'' . Cet échec de l'intelligence résume la dérive de ces universités qui oublient les principes par trouille de risquer de choquer quelques élèves qui sont ''pré-choqués'' par système ! Le mal frappe partout...

  Huit romans résument l’histoire littéraire de la Nouvelle-France. L'un d'eux est le monument de la littérature canadienne, ''Forestiers et Voyageurs'' de Joseph-Charles Taché, que j'ai tant aimé dans ma jeunesse. Ce recueil de nouvelles raconte les mœurs des trappeurs français, vers 1863. Mais patatrac ! Page 99, il est écrit ''travailler comme des nègres'', et une élève de couleur, ''offensée'' (sic !), s'est plainte. Le professeur n'a pas réussi à lui faire comprendre que ce qui peut paraître choquant de nos jours ne l’était pas au XIXe siècle, et que ça s'appelle ''la contextualisation'', le contraire de l'anachronisme : ce qui est  important, dans nos pauvres universités trop ‘’bien-pensantes’’, ce n'est plus ni la vérité ni l'intelligence !

  Cette anecdote résume le mélange de pathologies, toutes mortelles, qui frappe aujourd'hui le système universitaire occidental (et lui seul). C'est un cocktail de néo-antiracisme, de LGTB-tisme, de faux féminisme, d'islamo-gauchisme, des folies des lobbies gay, ‘’cisgenre’’ (?) et ‘’transgenre’’, du décolonialisme et de l'indigénisme, et de quelques autres folies, tout aussi ravageuses. Le plus grave est que nos ''responsables-sic'' ferment les yeux, tétanisés à l'idée de paraître ''pas dans le coup'' sur un ''modus operandi'' fait des mêmes mots, des mêmes outrances, des mêmes bobards, des mêmes glissements sémantiques, des mêmes accusations staliniennes et du même vocabulaire corrompu qui encourage toutes les déformations, toutes les distorsions et tous les  ''gauchissements'' de la vérité).

  Cette ‘’complicité entre le terrorisme et les idéologies dites indigéniste, racialiste et décoloniale'' ne rêve que de détruire le système universitaire occidental et son fonctionnement quotidien, à travers une ''police de la pensée'' et une ''chasse aux sorcières'' dont ils accusent, à contre-rôle, leur ministre --rituellement sommé de démissionner. Du coup, des faibles se mettent à hurler avec les loups : tel ministre ''aurait tenu des propos qui pouvaient être interprétés comme....'' (et que ce soit faux ne gêne personne) : la plus petite atteinte à la semi-anarchie qui règne dans plusieurs universités est dite inacceptable par une poignée d'universitaires ''dans le coup'' qui se placent dans la posture avantageuse de résistance à un supposé ''pouvoir autoritaire qui cherche à camoufler les injustices et les inégalités''.

  L'islamo-gauchisme est la rencontre de l'islam politique radicalisé avec le pire du socialisme occidental, sur fond de rancœur post-coloniale et de lutte antiraciste exacerbée (qui est une haine raciale et raciste, et rien d'autre). A l'origine, c'était un calcul électoral mitterrandien qui depuis 30 ans, a fait de  la gauche l'idiote-utile des islamistes... ''Quand on veut déjeuner avec le diable, disait un proverbe, on prend une longue cuiller...'' . Le socialisme est mort d'avoir confondu ''lutte des classes'' avec ''lutte des races’’, comme en mourront aussi, chacun à son tour, le mélenchonisme délirant et le macronisme irresponsable. Mais la France aussi, hélas, si la réaction n'est pas à la hauteur, et rapide, en plus.

  Pour Max Weber, l’éthique de la conviction est la caractéristique du ''savant'', surtout lorsque, comme dans le cas présent, des théories ne tiennent pas la route deux minutes (d'où, sans doute, le besoin d'entre-soi et le rejet de tout contradicteur de ces ayatollahs) : c’est en n'y souscrivant jamais et en démontrant qu'elles sont fausses et absurdes qu’on les fera reculer... Encore faudrait-il que des ''collabos'', pour se faire croire qu’ils sont dans le coup, n'interdisent pas toute critique !  

  Car l'apparente symétrie n'est qu'un piège : il ne s’agit pas de l’affrontement de deux idéologies opposées, comme le furent le marxisme et le libéralisme, ou le  keynésianisme et le monétarisme, mais d'une seule théorie, qui n'admet pas la moindre contestation, et qui s'impose et se répand, comme une hégémonie culturelle à quoi rien ne doit pouvoir être opposé : les idéaux issus de la philosophie des lumières et la foi dans la force émancipatrice de l’enseignement de masse sont en pleine déroute, ainsi que la foi chrétienne, pourtant support majeur de notre civilisation et seul et dernier rempart possible contre cette effroyable pandémie...

  Ces théories mortifères n'ont qu'une seule idée, obsessionnelle : la mort de la famille patriarcale traditionnelle et du Père en particulier. Présentées comme un ensemble cohérent, tous les  ''politiquement correct'', ''woke'' ou ''cancel culture'' et ''doxa diversitaire, différencialiste ou victimaire''... ne sont que des idéologies de destruction massive. En ce moment focalisées sur l’enseignement supérieur, elles pourrissent l’ensemble du corps social, à travers une anti-élite paradoxalement aussi inculte que sur-diplômée, par ''entrisme'' dans les syndicats, les associations, les ONG, les partis politiques, les clubs de sport, les administrations, et même des entreprises et, bien sûr, la quasi-totalité du corps enseignant et la Justice. Elles rongent les manuels scolaires, et les médias, tellement ouverts à tout ce qui est pervers... Comme le marxisme jusqu’aux années '80, cette idéologie formate et déforme la pensée, impose son vocabulaire et ses comportements (par exemple, l’écriture inclusive, cette aberration qui est une négation de l’intelligence).  

  Max Weber (encore lui !) préconisait la ''neutralité axiologique'' : ''le prophète et le démagogue n'ont pas leur place dans une chaire universitaire'', et il est, bien sûr, ''inexcusable que le maître profite de sa situation pour essayer de marquer ses élèves de ses propres conceptions politiques''. Ce grand économiste et sociologue n'avait pas prévu une décadence où les élèves se mettraient à  terroriser les professeurs et leur imposeraient les pires mensonges, et pourtant le matraquage politiquement correct bat son plein, et les médias, intoxiqués, pratiquent un véritable lavage de cerveau pour faire croire aux naïfs que l'immigration, y compris clandestine, serait soit une invention soit une impression (sic !) des méchants blancs... A les en croire, il n'y a jamais assez de ‘’migrants’’, d'où leurs clameurs d'indignation outrancière à chaque mouvement des forces de l’ordre, qu'ils ramènent au niveau d’une bande de voyous comme une autre --en plus brutal !

  Il faut aussi parler des "avancées" sociétales. Toute idée insoutenable (même si, derrière elle, existent quelques situations individuelles douloureuses) mérite des éloges dithyrambiques, à la radio et dans les journaux (on pense à ce documentaire militant sur Arte, sur la "transidentité", applaudissant au changement de sexe d'un enfant de huit ans... ou à la diffusion sur des chaînes de télévision d'un programme de "rééducation" en seize épisodes, censé déconstruire les ''préjugés sexistes des enfants'', clairement inspiré par la théorie du genre et conçu avec l'association féministe Les Chiennes de garde)... La liste est  interminable, de toutes ces horreurs conceptuelles qui circulent comme s'il s'agissait de choses normales...

  Et n'oublions pas l'actuelle ''crise sanitaire'' : non contents de relayer servilement le discours du gouvernement depuis des mois, les médias bien-pensants censurent carrément ceux qui ne partagent pas le point de vue officiel et ses idées liberticides (NDLR - le controversé patron de BFM TV, Marc-Olivier Fogiel, ne s'en cache pas : "Dès qu'on a entendu ce que racontaient les rassuristes (?), on a fait en sorte de ne jamais plus les inviter", officialisant le fait que nous vivons dans un régime dictatorial... pour le moment encore un peu ''soft''). Mais censure et interdictions façonnent peu à peu l'opinion publique. Un espoir ? De plus en plus de gens de bonne volonté commencent à se rendre compte que l'heure est grave...

Ah, j’ai une réponse toute prête qui n’est pas à moi ! L’historien Yann Kindo et l’anthropologue Christophe Darmangeat, que j’aime d’amour (il a intitulé son blog « La Hutte des classes »...), avaient consacré une petite étude critique à quatre mains et deux claviers à un ouvrage de Federici très populaire parmi les cercles féministes, hélas ! qu’est Caliban et la Sorcière : les femmes, les corps et l’accumulation primitive (Paris, EntreMonde, coll. , 2014, l’édition originelle anglophone étant parue en 2004), et ressorti de derrière les fagots « grâce » à l’essayiste féministe bien eud’chez nous Mona Chollet, que j’ai connue franchement plus inspirée, mais qui a commis l’année dernière une resucée de Caliban en publiant chez Zones un fort médiocre Sorcières : la puissance invaincue des femmes et qui n’a pas du tout apprécié la critique de deux scientifiques par ailleurs ressortissant de la race couillidée.

Yann Kindo, au demeurant, fait un commentaire raisonnable en amont de sa critique de Caliban, notant :

« Il serait évidemment bien malvenu de reprocher à Silvia Federici d’avoir voulu faire un travail d’historienne sans en avoir la formation académique. Bien d’excellents ouvrages ont été ainsi écrits par des auteurs qui n’étaient pas des spécialistes, voire qui ne possédaient aucun titre universitaire. En revanche, quelles que soient les compétences réelles ou supposées des auteurs, un livre d’histoire ne doit pas être un livre d’histoires : les faits et les idées qu’il contient doivent être présentés avec rigueur et honnêteté – d’autant plus lorsque, comme c’est le cas ici, le texte prétend remettre en cause des faits qui font consensus. Et c’est là que le bât blesse… »

Effectivement, le bât tamponne sacrément les flancs de la mule, d’autant plus la mienne que je suis médiéviste de formation et que je suis particulièrement hérissée à l’idée d’idéologues américaines venant essayer leurs godillots orthopédiques sur mon carré de simples, pour ainsi dire. Par ailleurs, je suis devenue tout spécialement chatouilleuse ces dernières années devant le fatras de conneries qui circulent sans appareil critique dans les milieux féministes, relayant beaucoup d’inventions pures et simples ou de manipulations à visée politique concernant l’anthropologie historique, les mœurs, les symboles, les rapports sociaux...

Les non-historiens ont souvent du mal à comprendre comment fonctionne la rigueur scientifique en milieu universitaire et les militants en général tendent à rejeter les critiques les plus rationnelles en arguant du fait qu’elles sont émises par des aigris réactionnaires ou tout du moins trop conventionnels : si personne ne donne crédit à ma thèse, ce n’est pas qu’elle repose sur du vent ou de la broderie, c’est forcément que je suis un pionnier visionnaire. Et si je parle des femmes et que mes critiques sont masculins, alors fatalement ce sera un complot sexiste. On devrait obliger tout activiste en herbe à se familiariser avec la méthode zététique pour commencer.

En 1935, Albert Einstein avait décidé de refuser toutes ses invitations à parler dans les universités. Il s'y est tenu jusqu'au 3 mai 1946. À cette époque, de retour dans leur pays, les vétérans noirs de la guerre subissaient les pires brimades du fait de la politique ségrégationniste. Ces vétérans noirs commençaient à être ulcérés d'avoir le droit d'aller mourir pour leur pays mais pas celui de s'asseoir où ils le voulaient dans un bus à cause de leur couleur. Or Einstein était non seulement juif, mais il était lui-même un migrant qui avait fui une autre politique ségrégationniste aussi se sentait-il plus que concerné par la question ! En 1946, il déclara : "La séparation des races n'est pas une maladie des gens de couleur, mais une maladie de Blancs et je n'ai pas l'intention de rester silencieux". Alors il brisa la règle qu'il s'était lui-même fixée pour aller parler dans une toute petite université, l'université Lincoln, à Philadelphie. Une université réservée aux gens de couleur. Il y reçut un diplôme honorifique des mains de Horace Mann Bond, un historien noir alors administrateur de l'université Lincoln, le père de Julian Bond, grande figure du mouvement pour les droits civiques. Ça n'a l'air de rien comme ça, mais à l'époque, c'était un comportement très courageux de la part d'Einstein. Bien évidemment, la presse se garda de relayer l'événement.

Illustration Article 09: Album Art (Roger Dean)

Album art can feature any style or media, as long as it is printed within a square format. This can include drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, photography, collage, digital effects, or any combination. They can relate closely to the album title or to a specific song, or can have completely separate imagery; most of the time, we subconsciously connect cover art to the album tracks, even if they don’t logically fit. A lot of albums simply use photographs of the singer/band; this may seem simplistic or boring, but a lot of covers place the photograph within a specific composition—using collage elements, color and lighting effects, typography effects, and so forth. But I’m going to focus on illustrated album art that not only stands out as an album, but as a standalone work of art as well.

Roger Dean (b. 1944) went to college for industrial design, developing strong drawing skills in draftsmanship for objects and environments. Some of these studies included an exploration of imaginary constructions, creating building foundations and furniture designs using unconventional shapes and colors. After making interior designs for a jazz club in 1968, the owner asked him to use a portfolio piece for the band Gun’s album Race with the Devil. After this, Dean produced album cover art for several bands, including Asia, Yes, Budgie, and Uriah Heep. Cover art for Yes’ and Asia’s commercially-successful albums have become iconic; his realism-inspired fantasy environments are still marveled at for their clarity, detail, and organic ornamentation. Dean also made video game art during the 80s, and in recent years has contributed designs for futuristic architecture.

This first example is an album cover Dean designed for Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe (yes, that is the name of the band). This band’s four members were all previous members of Yes. Their one eponymous studio album in 1989 was illustrated by Dean. There is an interesting combination of vertical and horizontal forms; the tall rocky formations and bizarre architecture intersect with the tree branches and clouds. Despite the overlapping shadows, textures, and details of the environment, the image is not overwhelming. The near-empty sky provides breathing space, allowing the foreground to shine. As you travel farther, the rocks become less saturated, and the shadows become purple. This allow the orange colors of the center-right formation to really pop.

This second example is one of Dean’s most popular album art commissions—that of Yes’ 1974 album, Relayer. I read that the background was painted with watercolor, while the foreground was painted with ink. This sharply divides the foreground and background, prioritizing different elements. The foreground’s rocks and snakes have heavy textures and patterns, emphasizing their hard surface; the background has soft, graceful lines and values, becoming very pale at the furthest point. We assume that the cave/tunnel supports were naturally formed, but the geometric segmentations and indentations suggest something carved or built; the smooth, vertical shapes bring to mind the structure of bark-less trees or fungi.

This third example is from Yes’ 1980 album, Drama. This stood out to me because of the color scheme—black, gray, blue and white make me think of ice crystals. The lined landscape in the foreground is barren, save for the white and black silhouettes of birds and animals. The lighting seems otherworldly—the bottom half of the painting has primarily darker values, but the background mountain has a punch of white and light-yellow hues.

This last example is from Asia’s 1983 album, Alpha. This was an album cover that I recognized before researching Dean. I think people may be drawn to it because of the bizarre juxtaposition in the environment. It’s obviously futuristic from the architecture in the background, but elements of nature are still thriving in the foreground. Plus the pyramid, a symbol of antiquity, is given a sheen and sharply-smooth appearance. The color scheme is primarily cool (greens and blues), but certain details of orange, red, and purple make the elements appear more colorful.

Reda et le droit de cité

Foulant les terrains du “vivier de Cronenbourg” dès son plus jeune âge, Reda Bellahcene va tenter un pari osé à l’USM Alger, le club phare de la capitale algérienne où le Strasbourgeois s’efforcera de devenir un atout supplémentaire dans l’entrejeu.

En commançant à taper le ballon au stade Exès dans le quartier de Cronenbourg, dès cinq ans puisque le football est la passion de toute la famille - “Même ma mère et ma soeur ont regardé la Coupe du Monde”, dit-il en riant de bon coeur - Reda Bellahcene a su grandir dans sa tête, mais aussi dans le foot pour intégrer une des équipes de jeunes du Racing. 

Jusqu’à 15-16 ans, il passe de nombreux paliers dans le centre de formation du club alsacien, mais fait face à quelques entraineurs qui ne croient pas en lui. “Lorsque tu as 13 ans et qu’un entraîneur te dit : “Des joueurs comme toi, il y en a partout”, tu t’en souviens parce que sur le moment ça fait mal”, raconte-t-il.

“Je n’oublie pas les moments de blues que j’ai eus”

Après une expérience malgré tout enrichissante dans le club de la capitale alsacienne, ce France-Algérien de 23 ans file au SC Schiltigheim. Après avoir suivi les cours de foot de Stéphane Soppo’Din et Djamel Ferdjani, “deux éducateurs marquants”, il évolue trois ans en National 3 sous les conseils de l’expérimenté José Guerra, l’entraîneur emblématique du Sporting. En peinant à s’imposant, l’aîné Bellahcene décide finalement de faire ses bagages. “On m’avait collé une étiquette de dillettante et je n’arrivais plus à m’en débarrasser. Tout n’a pas été rose, mais ça m’a réellement permis de me forger un mental”.

En s’exilant à Saint-Louis la saison dernière, loin de ses proches, dans une ville où il ne connaît pas grand monde, tout n’est pas simple. “Je n’oublie pas les moments de blues que j’ai eus, c’était dur”, glisse-t-il. Son pari s’est avéré payant puisqu’après une saison dans le club ludovicien, il a été l’un des acteurs prépondérants du maintien de son équipe en National 2.

Lorsqu’une équipe réalise une saison de qualité, forcément des joueurs en sont récompensés. C’est ce qu’a vécu Reda, lorsqu’un jour, le directeur sportif de l’USM Alger s’est rendu à une rencontre de Saint-Louis pour superviser un joueur adverse. Mais c’est Reda Bellahcene qui lui tape dans l’oeil, et avec qui il décide de prendre contact mi-avril. “Il était venu me voir joueur, notamment contre Auxerre, où j’avais fait une grosse performance.”

Un stade de 80 000 spectateurs

Reda Bellahcene, Strasbourgeois de naissance, va donc parapher son premier contrat professionnel de trois ans au sein de l’équipe usmiste. “Je n’aurais jamais imaginé ce scénario il y a six mois”, avoue-t-il. En se rendant à Alger pour signer son contrat, le milieu de terrain franco-algérien a ainsi pu visiter les infrastructures du club local où il a posé ses crampons début août pour la reprise de l’entraînement.

“Le stade du 5 juillet peut accueillir 80 000 spectateurs” s’exclame-t-il. Un nom particulier pour un des plus grands Stade d’Afrique, où se déroule les grands matches de l’USMA, puisque le club a aussi une autre enceinte (le stade Omar Hamadi) pouvant accueillir 20 000 spectateurs. On comprend donc son engouement : à Saint-Louis, il jouait devant moins de 300 spectateurs...

En s’appuyant sur ses qualités d’un milieu relayer box to box, le franco-algérien aura à coeur de réussir sur la terre de ses ancêtres et tenter d’apporter ses qualités au sein d’un groupe usmiste déjà bien étoffé. “Je veux donner de la joie aux supporters, conclut-il. On verra dans six mois comment ça se passe.” Du mieux possible, on l’espère.

Pittsburgh Marathon - FedEx Relay: May 2015 race report

I was so proud of my team and I. Everyone did so well and we completed the race faster than anticipated. This is definitely the way to tackle 26.2 miles lol!

It was nice to have a sleep in and take my time getting to my start spot, typically I'd get up around 4 am but this year I got an extra hour of sleep! I rode my bike to the start line, a 3.1 mile warm up, ~15-20min. Then walked over to my spot, about another 2 miles. It took some maneuvering to get to my starting spot with everything blocked/ fenced off. A small group of us managed to navigate from the north side of downtown to the south, had to walk through the C corral.

I was able to really enjoy the race itself this year and spectate some. I saw the cyclists come through followed by the elite and regular half/ full marathoners (I had about 2 hours to kill lol). Watching the elite runners was incredible at that point, the first few to fly by were running at a less than 5 min mile pace. So fast! The crowd was amazing - shout outs and much thanks to those who volunteer and to those who come out to support the runners.

Relayers are given their medals at the end of each leg/ exchange point, handed to them via their teammates.

As team captain I ran one of the longer legs, which ended up being 6.2 miles, this also happened to have been the hardest route. I conquered those uphill miles in what felt like 80 some °F heat. I started out b/w mile markers 9 and 10 in the Southside at the Smithfield Bridge and E. Carson St. intersection, ran through Oakland and finished in the Point Breeze neighborhood a little after the 15 mile marker. I didn’t feel like I was going all that fast but I kept moving - no stopping, no walking, steady pace. Finished my leg in 1 hour 9 min, which was about my goal pace.

I hydrated at every station and use the cool damped towels they were handing my last couple of miles. I picked up some gel packets, saving those for the end. Chowed down on bananas and bagels after my leg. Apparently some of the other relay stations had misting tents too. Overall I felt good throughout my run, quite the hill workout. There were moments, usually at a turn that began yet another hill where I just wanted to walk but I forced myself to keep going and not slow down. My music kept my energy up and the cheers/signs from the crowd were once again amazing and helpful.

I took a shuttle back to the start and waited for the rest of my team. I was happy to see some of my other friends running the race. Another successful race completed and another medal for the shelf.

Amis attablés autour d’une table qui est la notre celle du Cuba Libre et de tant d’autres endroits, en effet nous visons a construire une communauté ou la mobilité est un mode de vie. C’est une évolution de la mobilité dans les facilités qu’offrent différents submersibles, dirigeables, navires et trains ainsi que des engins de mobilité ultime, a savoir que leur capacités motrices les rendent aptes a se rendre sur n’importe quel terrain tandis qu’ils offrent un vaste espace intérieur avec des perspectives sur les environs. Le Mobie est un tel engin, apte un jour a se rendre sur la Lune et sur Mars.

Quant a nous mes Amis notre table c’est ou la vie nous mène vraiment et Bombardier se doit de devenir leader dans cette mobilité positive et constructrice ou l’espace de travail et d’activité est global et distribué. Effectivement la mobilité des effectifs est importante au sein du groupe et elle se fait autour de pôles d’excellence distribués a travers le monde.  Ces pôles régionaux sont la pour nous assurer un accès a des technologies de pointes que nous proposons de focaliser avec ceux ci, le Gunray en est un bon exemple.

En tout il faudra être apte a faire de la diversité au sein du groupe un atout, il ne s’agit pas simplement de dépasser nos différences, il s’agit également de les exploiter. Ainsi différentes parties du monde disposent de différentes expertises technologiques, qu’il s’agit de fédérer pour produire notre version. Nous avons pu explorer comment il est possible de construire les choses différemment au sein des Blueprints. En effet une telle construction alvéolaire est révolutionnaire au sens ou elle ne nécessite pas de poutres porteuses.

Notre table au Cuba Libre, c’est aussi un outil de travail que ce submersible et nous avons vu comment cela peut venir en support de l’établissement de la chaîne Maisons d’Amis Bombardier ainsi que des Résidences Bombardier. Notre vaste aventure ensemble serait donc soutenue par ces deux axes que sont les visites de sites et les inaugurations d’autres. Et autre axe important le travail au sein du groupe et autour de projets personnels.

Il y a aussi les Plages Bombardier, il s’agit de visiter les sites sélectionnés pour y établir des plages comme celles que l’on a vues. En plus de populariser l’usage de soumarins pour de telles missions le navire est utile au groupe. Alors il y en a pour des années pour réaliser tout cela, et le sens de notre communauté c’est aussi de nous relayer a ces taches importantes que nous avons mentionnées.

Nous ne pourrons pas toujours êtres a bord mais notre présence a bord est utile a notre communauté. Ainsi il est important d’être la pour nos réunions annuelles a la Rochelle. Sauf si l’on est déjà a bord pour une mission. En somme il faut s’investir pour faire avancer cette SNC sans doute. Ou les actionnaires sont rétribués pour leur activité en dividendes. 

A bord nous aurons des membres de l’équipage qui ont ces taches spécifiques de faire avancer les projets du groupe a l’international et qui se relaient en permanence. Ce sont les employés de Bombardier auquels nous avons réservés des cabines a bord avec des espaces pour travailler et pour sociabiliser et rester en forme. 

Des ingénieurs, des architectes, des urbanistes, des managers de projets, des financiers. De véritables équipes aptes a conduire un projet jusqu’a son sign off avec les partenaires du groupe, dont des experts en BTP de Bombardier Advanced Concretes qui assurent le suivi et le contrôle qualité tout au long de l’ouvrage.

Il est fort possible que BAC se constitue a l’international par l’acquisition et le fusionnement de plusieurs groupes actuellement présents sur le BTP a l’international.

Bombardier World pourrait être cette nouvelle entité au sein du groupe réunissant les profils que nous avons mentionnés et d’autres ce qui pour le moment laisse le groupe se focaliser sur ses activités en attendant une diversification a l’international et sur l’espace.

Notre table a la Résidence Rue Bazo, il faudra œuvrer pour cela les choses naissent d’une action soutenue dans un sens, et cela a fini par aboutir a cette Casbah 2.0 que nous avons vu. Alors mes Amis il s’agit de faire de notre espace urbain un espace d’opportunités et de mobilité et cela progresse avec ce nouvel espace que nous avons découvert et qui avance de jour en jour, ou les bâtiments situés dans l’ancienne Médina adoptent une architecture Mauresque tandis que le quartier Français est reproduit fidèlement et en neuf dans le même style.

Car l’opportunité et la mobilité vont souvent ensemble, et qu’ils forment une expérience a l’international utile au groupe ainsi qu’a nos partenaires. Etre un catalyseur de cette évolution de la mobilité requière une participation active dans son infrastructure et nous avons vu comment le groupe opère une flotte de TGV au sein du plan Bombardier 1000, il est présent également dans le segment aérien a travers AIR Bombardier. 

C’est dire si c’est une tache conséquente que de réaliser tout cela et pourtant c’est nécessaire et préalable a pouvoir porter cette expertise dans l’espace. Car il faut le concevoir nécessairement comme un espace ou différentes races sapientes vont porter leur expertise et s’étendre vers les étoiles. Il faut donc dans ce cadre être porteur d’une expertise considérable et de pointe, et cela commence bien ici. 

C’est un investissement ou nous devons trouver des partenaires et ce ne sont pas les expertises qui manquent, il s’agit de fédérer, de fédérer l’aérien, le rail et le BTP, et d’opérer en nom propre dans ces secteurs.

Search and Trade Directly with AirSwap: A Merkle Exclusive with Co-Founder Don Mosites

AirSwap launched last week, enabling more than a million dollars in trades on day one. Offering a way for buyers and sellers to find each other and trade directly, AirSwap isn’t like traditional or decentralized exchanges. Find out more about AirSwap in our exclusive interview with co-founder Don Mosites.

The Merkle: Hi Don, thanks for speaking with us. I first reached out to you when I was writing a piece on decentralized exchanges (DEXs), and you told me that AirSwap isn’t a DEX because it’s more of a discovery service for peer-to-peer trading. How would you describe AirSwap?

Don Mosites: Thanks for having me. Yes, we don’t see AirSwap as a DEX. We believe the concept of “exchange” itself is already decentralized on the blockchain between peers. Our system lets those peers find each other and make trades directly. So technically, we’re more of a marketplace, and our platform is powered by search.

The Merkle: Could you give some background on why AirSwap is set up differently from DEXs and traditional order book setups?

Don Mosites: When my friend and co-founder Michael Oved first connected to the Ethereum community, he began to apply his experience in algorithmic trading and electronic markets to figure out decentralized trading designs. His early research revealed some limitations of decentralized order books.

Order books evolved as fast and predictable systems that prioritize and execute orders. Decentralizing this process creates a difficult coordination problem. Last year, 0x created a protocol for “relayers” to decentralize order books, which still faced race conditions, front running, and having to pay for cancels, which is a non-starter for market makers.

Seeing this, we opted to instead focus on peer-to-peer, in the spirit of the original Bitcoin white paper. With AirSwap, all three components of trade are decentralized: custody, execution, and settlement. We simply provide a peer discovery service called an Indexer, which looks and feels like a bulletin board with a search engine.

The Merkle: What are the advantages of this setup?

Don Mosites: First, AirSwap can scale with the growing token economy as market makers come online and trade more and more assets, and because trades are peer-to-peer, there are no fees on those transactions. As for pricing, given that we’re built for market makers, spreads will be tighter and you’ll see pricing comparable to centralized systems as more makers come online.

The Merkle: There are so many DEXs and centralized exchanges available today, where do you see AirSwap in all this? How do you stack up against competitors like 0x OTC and Radar Relay?

Don Mosites: We bring security, efficiency, and better pricing to decentralized trade. Just opening the platform last week, over $1 million of trades were made through the marketplace, and we had an incredibly positive community response. AirSwap offers more efficient trading and does not suffer the limitations of decentralized order books as mentioned before. Users are always in control of their assets and make trades directly, peer to peer. Because trades are direct between peers, there’s less friction, and pricing will be better than alternatives, even comparable to centralized systems.

The Merkle: What are some of the security measures you’ve taken to ensure that AirSwap is reliable for users? Are you doing any outside code auditing or other forms of security measures?

Don Mosites: We had two independent auditors look at our smart contracts available on our GitHub. We’re also confident in our security posture because we don’t handle users’ funds or settle trades. That all happens on-chain, between individuals, using smart contracts.

The Merkle: What’s the number one piece of advice you’d offer to new investors in the space?

Don Mosites: Pick up a hardware wallet, because dealing in keystore files and private keys on your own is dangerous. Decentralization means security is in your hands, so you need to be very careful about how you control your assets.

The Merkle: Where do you see blockchain technology heading in the long term? What do you think will be the effects?

Don Mosites: This is a huge question, but where we can have an impact is in the reduction of expensive and fragile trust systems of exchange, replacing them with new ways for people around the world to safely transact without intermediaries.

The Merkle: What motivates the AirSwap team to create projects in this emerging market?

Don Mosites: So much about what we’re doing is powerful in how it makes us feel. As technologists, it’s incredible to put these tools to work and see a positive impact. There’s a real chance to make the world a safer and more efficient place to trade, and we think the power of that is yet to be seen.
