Very saddened to hear of the passing of Legendary Producer and Director Roger Corman (1926-2024)

Roger Corman, the “King of the Bs” who helped turn out such low-budget classics as “Little Shop of Horrors” and “Attack of the Crab Monsters” has died.

He was 98.

Corman died at his home in Santa Monica, California.

No cause of death mentioned.

Starting in 1955, Corman helped create hundreds of B-movies as a producer.

Roger William Corman was born April 5, 1926, in Detroit, Michigan. Corman studied engineering at Stanford University, but, while in school, he began to lose interest in the profession and developed a growing passion for film. Upon graduation, he worked a total of three days as an engineer at US Electrical Motors, which cemented his growing realization that engineering wasn't for him. He quit and took a job as a messenger for 20th Century Fox, eventually rising to the position of story analyst.

He sold his first script in 1953, "The House in the Sea," which was eventually filmed and released as Highway Dragnet (1954).

With no formal training, Corman first took to the director's chair with Five Guns West (1955) and over the next 15 years directed 53 films, mostly for AIP.

He was one of the most prolific producers in the history of the film medium and one of the most successful he has been dubbed, among other things, "The King of the Cult Film" and "The Pope of Pop Cinema" and his filmography is packed with hundreds of remarkably entertaining films in addition to dozens of genuine cult classics. His influence on modern American cinema is almost incalculable. In 2009, he was honored with an Academy Award for Lifetime Achievement.

In 1964 he married Julie Halloran, a UCLA graduate who also became a producer.

He is survived by his wife, Julie, and children Catherine, Roger, Brian and Mary.

Sad to learn of the death of Actor Tom Wilkinson (1948-2023)

Thomas Geoffrey Wilkinson OBE, the Oscar-nominated British actor known for his roles in “The Full Monty,” “Michael Clayton” and “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel,” has died.

He was 75.

Wilkinson died suddenly at home on Saturday. No cause of death was listed.

He was Born 5 February 1948 and had a long career with more than 130 film and TV credits in total, Wilkinson was as comfortable in period dramas like 1995's Sense and Sensibility and 2013's Belle, as he was playing criminal masterminds in movies like Rush Hour opposite Jackie Chan in 1998, or Guy Ritchie's RocknRolla in 2008.

He also earned an Emmy for playing US political figure Benjamin Franklin in 2008 mini-series John Adams and an Emmy nomination as John F Kennedy's father Joe in The Kennedys. He played President Lyndon B Johnson in 2014's Selma, and appeared in The Grand Budapest Hotel and Girl with a Pearl Earring.

Wilkinson was nominated for a best actor Academy Award for his work in 2001’s drama “In The Bedroom” and in the best supporting actor category for his role in “Michael Clayton,”

He is remembered by many in Britain and beyond for playing former steel mill foreman Gerald Cooper in the 1997 comedy “The Full Monty,”

Wilkinson appeared in dozens of other movies, including “Batman Begins,” “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” and “Valkyrie.”

The actor was recognized for his services to drama in 2005 when he was appointed a member of the Order of the British Empire.

Sad to hear of the passing of Director, Producer, writer Norman Lear (1922-2023)) Norman Lear, the writer, director and producer who revolutionized prime time television with “All in the Family,” “The Jeffersons” and “Maude,” has died.

He was 101.

Lear died in his sleep, surrounded by family at his home in Los Angeles.

His shows helped define prime time comedy in the 1970s, launched the careers of Rob Reiner and Valerie Bertinelli and made middle-aged superstars of Carroll O’Connor, Bea Arthur and Redd Foxx.

Lear’s work transformed television.

“All in the Family,” based on the British sitcom, “Til Death Us Do Part,” was the No. 1-rated series for an unprecedented five years in a row and earned four Emmy Awards as best comedy series, Hits continued for Lear and then-partner Bud Yorkin, including “Maude” and “The Jeffersons,”

Lear and Yorkin also created “Good Times,” “Sanford & Son,” and “One Day at a Time,” In the 1974-75 season, Lear and Yorkin produced five of the top 10 shows.

In 1984, he became one of the first seven people inducted into the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences’ Hall of Fame. He later received a National Medal of Arts and was honored at the Kennedy Center.

Some of his lesser know show include “Hot L Baltimore,” “Palmerstown” “a.k.a. Pablo,” “All That Glitters” and “The Nancy Walker Show.”

Lear was born in New Haven, Conn. on July 27, 1922,

He dropped out of Emerson College 1942 to enlist in the Air Force and flew 52 combat missions in Europe as a turret gunner, earning a Decorated Air Medal. After World War II, he began writing in the early 1950s on shows including “The Colgate Comedy Hour” in 1959, he produced films including “Come Blow Your Horn,” “Start the Revolution Without Me” and “Divorce American Style.”

Stephen Sondheim was one of the most important figures in 20th-century musical theater, Sondheim was praised for having "reinvented the American musical" with shows that tackled "unexpected themes that range far beyond the [genre's] traditional subjects" with "music and lyrics of unprecedented complexity and sophistication".

Sondheim started his theatre career by writing the lyrics for West Side Story (1957) and Gypsy (1959) before becoming a composer and lyricist. Sondheim's best-known works include A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1962), Company (1970), Follies (1971), A Little Night Music (1973), Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (1979), Merrily We Roll Along (1981), Sunday in the Park with George (1984), and Into the Woods (1987).

Sondheim's accolades include eight Tony Awards (including a Lifetime Achievement Tony in 2008),[1] an Academy Award, eight Grammy Awards, a Pulitzer Prize, a Laurence Olivier Award, and a 2015 Presidential Medal of Freedom. He has a theater named for him both on Broadway and in the West End of London. Sondheim wrote film music, contributing "Goodbye for Now" for Warren Beatty's Reds (1981). He wrote five songs for 1990's Dick Tracy, including "Sooner or Later (I Always Get My Man)", sung in the film by Madonna, which won the Academy Award for Best Original Song. Film adaptations of Sondheim's work include West Side Story (1961), Gypsy (1962), A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1966), A Little Night Music (1977), Gypsy (1993), Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007), Into the Woods (2014), West Side Story (2021), and Merrily We Roll Along (TBD).

Sondheim approached Lin-Manuel Miranda to work with him translating West Side Story lyrics into Spanish for an upcoming Broadway revival.[142][143] Miranda then approached Sondheim with his new project Hamilton, then called The Hamilton Mixtape.

Sondheim came out as gay when he was about 40, and lived alone until he was 61; he then lived with dramatist Peter Jones for eight years in the 1990s. Sondheim married Jeffrey Scott Romley, a digital technologist, in 2017; they lived in Manhattan and Roxbury, Connecticut.

Before the gay liberation movement arose, many gays felt that the number "Somewhere" from West Side Story spoke directly to the gay experience, but Sondheim was angered by the suggestion that there might be anything gay about the lyrics of the song, saying, "If you think that's a gay song, then all songs about getting away from the realities of life are gay songs."
