Summary:

The Winter King was as cold and harsh as the lands he ruled. He did not take kindly to strangers, and those who crossed his boundaries vanished, never to be heard from again, or returned, incurably altered, mere shades of their former selves. Shang Qinghua knew the stories as well as any other, but that didn’t prepare him to meet Mobei Jun, the fae king of the North. Expecting to be punished for a transgression that was hardly his fault, he is surprised when the king merely insisted he join his staff, copying old records. Mobei Jun is just as unprepared for the strange allure the baffling human scribe seems to hold over him. He proves every bit as clever and skilled as he claims, however, and Mobei Jun soon grows to trust him. Like so many things in life, good things never last long, and their tentative relationship gets thrown upside down after an ill-thought kiss sets off an ancient curse.

Anyway.

As you can probably guess by the above nonsense — I’m frustrated with my WIP. And I started to notice a pattern in how I think about my WIP. I’m so negative! All I keep going on and on about is how it sucks, how it will never turn out well, how it’s too convoluted, the characters are either too complicated or too cardboard cut-out.

Doesn’t it get tiring to piss on your own enjoyment, lady?

I read/heard somewhere that negative thoughts attract more negative thoughts and positive thoughts attract more positive thoughts. And I definitely need more positive thoughts here.

So, let’s have some positive thoughts. 

My story has snarky banter that’s so much fun to write. It has a fantasy setting where I can add all sorts of whacky stuff. My main character is a grumpy older woman and I love her so much. My two main characters start on very different mindsets and they will grow with each other. With snarky banter.

This was a year... well... it was, and that is what counts. 

I hope that for this 2023, you are always surrounded by love and care, I hope that you live new experiences, see and visit new places, and make new friends. Thank you so much for sharing your love and hyperfixations in this fandom, for your tags, memes, and beautiful art.

Swear to you guys, I wish I could throw a party where all of us can have lots of fun, all of us in cosplay of our chosen characters (the ones in the wwx/zzs/wkx/sqx/jby will have to take one shot at the entry (and if you don't drink well, the beverage of your choice then,)) karaoke with songs that your character would sing, dance competence for the party animals (all of this at a moderate volume since we care for the ones with sensory issues,) PowerPoint presentations for the ones that want to convince us to read your fave work that isn't famous (10 min tops, maximum of 8 slides), fanfic and official work reading while enacting it (we will ban some scenes of course,) discussions/debates of headcanons... so sorry, stopping now.

I have written exactly three pieces of Dragon Age: Inquisition fanfiction, and this is one of them. I'm not thrilled to bits that this is my most seen and kudos'd fic because I wasn't overly enamoured with DA:I, but one of my favourite bits in it was the Iron Bull romance. I really liked how he created a safe space for the Inky with clear consent that let her just be for awhile.

Comments/Caveats:

Reincarnation — Generally not my cup of tea (I feel like they often tend to make the characters less interesting to me) but I’ve read some good ones and written one myself, so I don’t have stones to throw here.

Sci-Fi AU or Magic AU — To be honest, I like these more as universe fusions than as wholly original AUs. Absolutely no shame to the folks who create some genuinely compelling original AUs, but personally I like a Star Trek fusion over a ‘vague sci-fi setting’ AU.

Gender Bend — Gonna be honest, not a fan of these. But I love trans AUs and I feel like those can sort of squeeze in under this umbrella. Long story short — if it genuinely explores the character’s relationship with gender and identity and body, without being gimmicky or being used solely to turn a same-sex ship straight, I’ll probably like it.

slow burn or love at first sight: I actually love both of these but the second one is SO FREQUENTLY ‘welcome to Allo Nonsense O’Clock’ and I’m sorry but my aroace ass is just not here for that. I do, however, love ‘oh my god what are these feelings do I have food poisoning do I hate them WHAT IS THIS.’ Instant Feels accompanied by confusion and mortification and rage? Oh yes, love that, good shit.

fake dating or secret dating: I do not actually have super-strong feelings for either of these but the first is more likely to involve idiots in mutual pining and I LIVE for that shit.

enemies to lovers or best friends to lovers: Both of these have excellent pining potential but the first one includes more ‘and I’m ANGRY ABOUT IT’ and I do, as mentioned in the first item, LOVE that shit. Yes, please be furious about these horrible feelings while also being powerless against them. [hellmo.gif]

oh no there’s only one bed or long-distance correspondence: This was literally just because I’ve read more tasty fic with epistolary segments. The first one is good! The second one is just slightly more in line with my very niche preferences.

hurt-comfort or amnesia: I fucking LOVE hurt-comfort so almost anything else put into this bracket would be losing to it but also I just don’t really vibe with amnesia most of the time. Like, I’ll read it, it’s not a Hard No, but it’s not a plot point in any of my top ten or indeed in like... the top fifty.

fantasy au or modern au: FANTASY AU MY BELOVED but also why are modern AUs so much a thing, they’re everywhere, I filter them out and it wipes out like 1/3 of the fic for a fandom. I live in this reality because I don’t have a CHOICE why would I want to stay when fiction can instead take me to places with dragons or spaceships or magic or literally anything other than More Goddamn Capitalism????

mutual pining or domestic bliss: Mutual pining is the one thing that could have beat out hurt-comfort. This wins against literally everything. Also established relationship is another thing I usually filter out because it’s about the Yearning.

smut or fluff: Yeah I said what I said. I’m here for yearning and sometimes also for porn. Fluff does not usually contain acceptable levels of Yearning. Smut, on the other hand, is surprisingly compatible with it as long as the principles are idiots who can’t communicate.

canon-compliant or fix-it: fix it, always, I am a weak little marshmallow and canon likes to kill my faves.

reincarnation or character death: Neither of these is My Jam but if they have to die at least they don’t have to STAY DEAD okay?

one-shot or multi-chapter: porque no los dos? But also if we’re talking about writing it’s 100% one-shot because I’m an ADHD disaster gremlin.

kid fic or road trip fic: Honesty time my first impulse was ‘eh, neither?’ And then I remembered that I love road trip fic actually it’s just that my favorite settings do not have CARS. Travel is great! Travel stories are great! Reality is boring and I would prefer not to be here!

arranged marriage or accidental marriage: Okay TECHNICALLY I think arranged wins this but I don’t really go in for the traditional ‘they’ve never met before and other people are forcing the issue’ thing that the term usually signifies. At the same time, I can enjoy an accidental marriage thing if it’s not a farce but that’s ALSO usually not what people mean. So I’m not picking one because if we’re going by The Usual Meanings I tend to actively avoid both. If you’re wondering what the fuck I’m talking about I was trying to decide if I’m too ashamed to explain myself but then I realized you had to click under a cut and then keep reading after I was like ‘porn > fluff’ so you know what you’re in for and the answer is ‘I enjoy a good warprize fic because I am a trash panda who deserves to live in the dumpster.’ I don’t like strangers making them get married. I like one of them making them get married and probably the marriage goes unconsumated for ages and they fall in love and neither realizes the other has feelings and-- yeah.

high school romance or middle aged romance: What do you want from me here, you can fit SO much more yearning into several decades than you can into several years. See also: my conviction that Persuasion is the best Austen novel.

time travel or isolated together: Both of these can be Good Shit, but time travel wins it by a smidge because Isolated Together can feel like what is actually happening is they are breaking under psychological torture and like. I would prefer they have actual feelings. I say this as someone who loves a good fictional codependent relationship; they still need to talk to other people sometimes.

neighbours or roommates: I was all ‘I don’t care whatever’ and then I remembered that Carry On exists and went ‘oh right, I do in fact care; roommates.’

sci-fi au or magic au: magicmagicmagicMAGIC--

body swap or gender bend: I love the ‘I’m desperately trying to be respectful and it’s weird to check out the body I’m in but ALSO--’ Like, it can get stupid if they’re trying to hide it for whatever reason (I swear I have a sense of humor it’s just that I also get CRIPPLING SECOND-HAND EMBARRASSMENT from like, everything in the universe), but it can be pretty great when handled well.

angst or crack: My entire fic preference can be summed up by that ‘I want them to fall SO far and then land on something soft’ thing someone said which I cannot find because google’s algorithm no longer actually tries to find you what you ask for and instead tries to anticipate your wants which is hard to do with me because I don’t know what’s going on in my head 90% of the time. Anyway. Angst. I can very occasionally be in the mood for crack but usually that’s a No.

apocalyptic or mundane: See: my answer to fantasy or modern. I do not like reality and I only live here because the emigration options fucking SUCK.

2 years late with some VtM Night Road Courier HCs because I'm late to everything, always (spoilers for Night Road I guess but also it's been two years). This is very long and doesn't even begin to cover my myriad thoughts lol

Echo is a Ravnos and despite a very shady past with very immoral things (trafficking and luring migrants to their death, eek) she’s got very high humanity. Turns out how kind she is to others is directly tied to how kind she is to herself, and she was not very nice to herself for the ten years spanning from 1997 to 2007.

Is insanely loyal to her BMW3 and kept it in tip top shape the whole way through. Made Dove swear to keep it safe. Dove agreed but thought it was stupid to be so attached to such a cheap car.

Echo's Cajun from Louisiana. As she was raised by her adoptive mother who was rather older than usual, French is actually still her native language and since she was home schooled she was educated in it too, up until she was 13 and her mother died anyway.

Related, more than once she had to stop herself from saying "cher" once she got more comfortable with Lettow. She's not *that* brazen. Has definitely used it on Riga though, more than once and long before Lettow indicated he too had some feelings and wasn’t just humouring her.

Also calls her lobo cher. His name is Rocket and he’s the bestest boy and genuinely got her through some very rough times.

Echo is a siren feeder because the lonely little Ravnos craves connection so very badly. To say her relationship with sex is complicated is an understatement and Julian telling her she could honeypot Lettow really upset her quite a lot.

Speaking of Lettow, Echo's Ravnos and so her decision to openly flirt with him from the word go seems borderline suicidal. Gangrel do not like Ravnos and she knows it; Camarilla do not like Ravnos and she also knows that, pretty much nothing could be worse than a Gangrel Elder and Prince then, you'd think. But her clan compulsion is tempting fate, basically, so Echo was less actually thirsting and more pushing to see how far she could go before he smacked her down.

Given she ended up getting on the plane with him, the answer is "unlikely to ever stop her actually". Getting on the plane is also somewhat a case of her compulsion at play, her and Lettow had not at that point had an actual conversation about their relationship in light of the Aila stuff and their expectations, but also it's because she did not side with the Camarilla in the end, she just chose Lettow. With no real friends in Tuscon and no ghouls or anything she wasn't leaving much behind after she perma-friend-dumped Julian. And on top of all that, she just wanted to be there for Lettow when he was doing something hard and lonely.

Plus she’s always wanted to travel outside the Americas.

She is a bit worried thought as Echo has one dot in strength and zero dots in anything combat related. I can only imagine her sitting on the sidelines while Lettow's doing Gehenna Stuff cheering him on (while sitting on a cooler of Invidica Caul's fancy blood because the beau needs the best in this trying time and Caul owes her). Which should actually work, if the fact her playing cheerleader helped in both the Reremouse and Donati fights is anything to go by.

My #1 post of 2022

I was able to commission @harumeau for my main Wayfarer, Saraia "Sai" Sero, from @idrellegames and I've been grinning widely since I got it!

The Rona days were a bit rough, as you can see from Sai's expression and the visible mending, but the process to get here on my end was very smooth and lovely at least. I think she's probably worried about finding the Chalice, and she's out in the rain to hide her worries from Aeran. And to escape the smell in Oleander's.

I am very VERY VERY late but here we go! I went with the angsty one because of Who I Am As A Person, and nobody who knows me is surprised. :)

Adam knows as soon as he senses Farah approaching, amber eyes sparkling with her usual wild energy, that he would find little enjoyment in whatever nonsense she has planned.

That, in it of itself, is not unusual; even in the best of times, the younger agent’s enthusiasm and general joie de vivre are… overwhelming, to put it mildly, and this is hardly what he would consider the best of times.

At least, not for him.

Taking a deep breath, he steps out of the shadows, folding his arms over his chest as he glares down at her. “What?”

The word is a low growl but she hardly seems to notice, and he finds himself wondering, not for the first time, whether or not she purposely chooses to employ her empathic senses for the sole purpose of annoying him. Judging from the way her lips curl into a predatory smirk, as if sensing the direction of his thoughts, it would seem the answer is yes.

That does not, apparently, stop the eyes that blink up at him with utmost innocence and he suppresses a sigh with some difficulty.

“Nothing. Can’t I just be here to check on you?”

He opens his mouth, a brusque command on his tongue, but… In spite of himself, he pauses. Her words are flippant enough, as they always are, but… But what he missed in his earlier… preoccupation is that there is compassion there too, a glimmer of sympathetic understanding in her gaze that makes the muscles in his back tighten and instead, he sighs, running his hand over his hair.

“I’m fine.”

It is not exactly a lie, but even so, her expression sharpens in a way that has him swallowing down his urge to insist. After all, he knows just as well as she does that it would only serve to intensify her suspicions.

“Hmm.”

His relief at her uncharacteristic acceptance lives only until she casts her eyes in the same direction he has been observing, the meandering path he has been following through the carnival’s numerous tents and attractions. Until she spies the two figures he cannot seem to look away from, walking hand in hand.

“Oh, Adam…”

He suppresses a flinch. “What?” he repeats, this time with all of the sharpness that he managed to keep hidden from his face.

Farah visibly frowns, the disapproving expression all the more grave coming from her perennially cheerful mien. The heavy weight of it settles in his stomach, a cold, unwelcome feeling that has him looking away.

Instead, inexorably, his gaze is drawn toward the pair, hands laced together while pale and dark heads incline toward each other, soft and intimate. As he watches, she tilts her head further up, says something that makes him through his head back in that warm, open laugh of his, one that his vampiric senses can hear even across the distance, even despite all of his efforts to the contrary.

His chest tightens.

“Adam,” she says again, and he has to force himself to meet her gaze, to settle his attention on the soft sympathy that somehow only manages to hurt more. “They aren’t… You don’t…” She shakes her head and he can’t help but raise an eyebrow at her unusual inarticulacy. “She didn’t choose.”

In spite of himself, he stiffens, the word she didn’t say ringing in his mind. The name of his oldest, closest friend. The one person he trusts above all others.

The only person who deserves her, who could be enough.

He clears his throat, the rough sound grating even to his own ears. “She should.”

Her sigh is audible in her voice. “You don’t believe that.”

“I do,” he says with as much conviction as he can muster. When she turns her gaze on him, he swallows, looking away from those dark, knowing eyes, too full of both reproach and sympathy. “I have to.”

In the ensuing silence, his attention falls back on the silhouettes that he cannot seem to lose, looking for all the world like another couple at the carnival.

Like what Farah no doubt intended for their first investigation, the one that he had to interrupt.

A gentle hand falls onto his arm and he stiffens, but the voice that drifts over his shoulder is quiet, almost coaxing. “Holding everything in doesn’t help, you know.”

He doesn’t say anything, but she doesn’t seem to be expecting him to; with a gentle squeeze, she steps away, far too insightful eyes blessedly relinquishing their hold, and he takes a deep breath, his own gaze falling back on Nate and the Detective, bright and warm and content in their peace.

It is enough. It has to be.

“I know,” he murmurs, though whether it is to Farah or himself, not even he can be sure.

The WIP Project 2023

Hello writerly friends!

Let's get started. 

One thing I want to do for this time around is to get us away from the wordcounts. Let's have some gentle writing.

Writing isn't all about the words we type. Sometimes it's about notes we scribble, mind maps and pictures we draw, and sometimes it's even editing existing words, where we delete and add words to make the story flow. I know that Camp NaNoWriMo is about wordcounts again, but I hope you won't put so much pressure on yourself. My advice would be that you set a small goal and give yourself the space and time to let your story grow. 

As we approach the April Camp, let's gently get into the mood and habit of working on our WIPs. I'll have a few inspirations for you, some advice, some questions. I hope you'll tell us about your WIP and if you have questions, problems, complaints, write about it. Make a post, chat on discord. https://discord.gg/mve7QSRfDm

I think it's also important to refill the creative well. That means experiencing things, art, stories, life. These things are just as important as the writing itself. I want that to be part of our writing life too.

Without wordcounts to note, we might feel like we do nothing, which is the opposite of what I want. To have some visual representation, I made a calendar for you. You can, of course, use another or make your own, I made this one in canva.com.

You can print this calendar (there's a pdf) or use it digitally (there's a png). I want you to make two kinds of check marks or stars for each day. One for "worked on the WIP", no matter what exactly it was, and another for "refilled the creative well" (I added the star graphics in the folder if you want to use those digitally as checkmarks).

One check mark for working on the WIP, one for experiencing something (yes, watching a TV show counts). Don't worry about wordcounts, but let's make writing a fun thing we do almost every day and let's also enjoy life and art.

Writing meme! Before the beginning or POV!

How about both? This is for 7kpp, my Hise Pirate Kyara, who winds up with Zarad.

BEFORE THE BEGINNING — three sentences (or more) about something that happened before the plot of my current project

 I think a lot about Kyara’s origin story outside of what we’re given in the game, but I haven’t really written down much of my thoughts. Here’s a little:

Papa wasn’t ill, but his heartache was almost like an illness, wearing at him, stealing away his vitality and life. I knew he’d never stop me from leaving, the sea was as much a part of me as it was Mama, but just one look at him made me wish I could forget the sea. I straightened my dress and smiled over my teacup at him, getting his grin in return, and I wished I’d never ever set foot on a ship.

POV — something that’s already happened, retold from another character’s perspective

This is leading up to this scene, I suppose, not quite a complete rewrite of it. Zarad’s perspective is here: Stuck

The lattice wasn’t going to get her down, and she’d stained her dress. Kyara could probably make the jump down, if she tucked and rolled, but her dress definitely wouldn’t. This was the kind of behavior the matchmaker would certainly look down upon, and she didn’t even want to think about Jasper’s reaction if he found out.

She would just have to chance it, unless there was another way of getting off the top of this gazebo that she was missing.

She was a pirate. Situations on the sea changes with the wind, that was the very nature of it. As she scanned around the area, Kyara was struck by how few options she had. With a toe, she pushed at the lattice she’d climbed up again, confirming that it had separated from the top of the gazebo. If she went down it, she’d likely crash to the ground taking the splintered lattice with her. 

Was it worth it just to find out that Falon and the matchmaker had slept together? General Falon, of all people, hadn’t seemed the type, but everyone had secrets. She wanted to curse the fact that she was stuck up here, but she certainly thought the information had been worth the risk. She closed her eyes and thought about how to best brace for the fall when salvation came. Kyara had the feeling that he’d come looking for her, the suspicion confirmed when he called out for her after checking around the gazebo a few times.

“Kyara?” Zarad called, and she stomped a little to draw him out of the gazebo. When he appeared around the side, looking up at her, he was smiling.

She loved and hated his smile in that moment, but couldn’t help returning it. “Zarad, please help me down!”
