You didn't specify an OC so I used RNG to select one :D RNG selected Elliot Hawke!

Oh man, Elliot blames himself for a LOT. There are a lot of things he's handled badly in his life, due to his anger issues.

Probably the strongest thing would be that on some level he feels himself responsible for the collapse of his family. Starting with Bethany's death - which Leandra was already happy to blame him for - and then Carver running to the Templars primarily because of his clashes with Elliot, and then everything that happened with Leandra's death which he didn't look into early enough partially because the two of them never got along.

The truth is (as we know because we have played the game with many other Hawkes who are not Elliot ;) ) it was all always going to fall apart, and his issues, while they may have compounded things, weren't really to blame. But it certainly still bothers him. As if perhaps, had he been a better son, a better brother, unhaunted by the demons that chase him, perhaps everything would have been fine.

It's not for nothing that the Nightmare in DAI taunts him by saying: "Fenris is going to die, just like your family and everyone you ever cared about."

Going with Kiss Me, Son of God by They Might Be Giants - the penultimate song on Maryam Trevelyan's playlist.

I built a little empire out of some crazy garbage Called the blood of the exploited working class But they've overcome their shyness Now they're calling me Your Highness And a world screams "Kiss me, Son of God"

This one went on the playlist preeetty soon after I decided I wanted to go with a villainous Inquisitor! Like... yeah. Perfect fit for a self-declared Herald of Andraste who uses that power to do awful things to the world and the people around her.

It's got a certain smarmy joy to it that I really love - and is actually kind of at odds with a lot of other Maryam songs! A lot of her playlist is much more sincere and solemn, even obsessive. I like this as a bit of a pressure valve to all that. I need her to be a villain who has fun at least some of the time, just so she doesn't become totally noxious to write or think about.

And also... there's a reason this is super late on her playlist. This is a point where she's really consolidated her power. She genuinely feels untouchable. Maryam genuinely believes she's the Herald of Andraste, but she still has this sense that she has gotten away with this.

BEFORE THE BEGINNING — three sentences (or more) about something that happened before the plot of my current project (in which Kaidan realises Rhys' initial armour is absolutely shit, and has some Choice Opinions About It)

"I fail to see why this is such a big deal Alenko."

Kaidan glares at him, extricating his fingers from the tangle of wires strewn across the bench with delicate care. There's no meexo underneath Shepard's flimsy excuse for armour, no medi-gel, no compartment space set aside for so much as a fucking bandaid. They really did just send him out to dance with death and expect him to walk off any injuries.

And he goes along with it!

"It's a big deal because I'm the one tasked with keeping your sorry ass alive out there if you get it handed to you, and your shitty excuse for armour makes that nigh on impossible. Who even signed off on this mess?"

"So you've taken it upon yourself to... upgrade it?"

"Yes!"

"Heavy armour?"

"I'm sorry, do you want me to dress you up in tulle the next time you decide to get up close and personal with geth? Because I can arrange that, just say the word, Shepard."

He's overstepping. He's way past overstepping, actually, right up in Shepard's face before he quite realises he's moved and - Shepard doesn't back down. Doesn't bite, either. Just watches him with those calm, icy eyes, head tipped to the side like Kaidan's a curiosity to study.

"You're angry."

"You're being treated like some cheap piece of equipment to be used and discarded when it doesn't make the cut, and that's not okay, Shepard! Of course I'm angry!"

29: how do they refer to the other in public? how do other people refer to the other? (i.e. “my partner”, “ask your father”, ”dad and papa”, ”how’s your wife?”, etc)

Before they get married, Hawke refers to him as her lover 99% of the time unless she needs to be painfully formal, in which case probably "friend" or "companion." Once they get married, she calls him her husband whenever context is needed.

Hilariously, for as much as I've written him, I can't see Fenris calling Hawke anything besides his friend or eventually wife. Has this really never come up in a fic? I can't believe it, and yet, all I'm landing on is "friend!" Ha! As I keep thinking about it, I don't see him ever willingly telling a stranger the nature of his relationship to Hawke (lest it be exploited or endangered), and for anyone who knows them already, he'd just use her name. After they're married, he might very rarely call her his wife in a place where using her name might bring danger or unwanted recognition, but I can't see it happening often.

In the context of the question, I can see both of them telling the children, "Ask your mother/father." I don't think either of them ever uses "partner" though.

I did just have a brief flash of Leda learning to say "Hawke" first instead of "Mama" because that's all she ever heard Fenris call her, which really made me laugh.

39: morning routine?

Fenris gets up early. Morning exercises, coffee, extremely light breakfast (I'm seeing grains, fruits), and a handful of chores--get them out of the way as soon as possible. Post-game, there's always small things that need to be done on a farm, and he'd want to do them before the sun gets hot anyway.

Hawke doesn't sleep nearly as late as I do, but she does sleep later than Fenris. Tea, probably a huge breakfast with eggs and buckets of bacon, nice and disgustingly greasy. Correspondence before anything else, then checking with Fenris as to the day's calendar. God knows she can't keep one together.

WIP meme: "shadow." There are 27 instances of "shadow" in this fic, but this is one of my favorites.

Seamstresses and tailors descended in clouds of frothy tulle and endless white bunting, and chandlers erected gold candelabra in every corner of the castle which might have ever once dreamily considered casting a shadow.

I have read the first one already and it's great! The second one will probably happen while sitting at the dr's office next week 🤣 (And I think I know someone with the DVDs, but if not, I will let you know when we get to the end of the current Colombo season. <3)

I haven't played any of the others either, and it's fine. This game is a giant combination of Dragon Age and D&D and Divinity Original Sin, and so if you like any one of those things it's absolutely worth it.

I have not played Divinity, though I've seen it when Thing 1 checked it out and it seemed quite good, and I do like TTRPG's and have a passing familiarity with other people playing D&D specifically? And we both know I love DA so... ALSO A COMPELLING ARGUMENT!

Meme has been having a lot of fun with it AND I WANT TO JOIN THE FUN, but I've never played this kind of RPG game before and historically I have been Bad At Figuring Out Problems (looking at you Lara Croft) but on the other hand i love DnD so....

I'll admit that the mechanics of the original BG is mostly why I never played it; too many dice rolls behind the scenes. Like, I love TTRPG's but I've never been good at keeping track of the actual rules I just bullshit with people I like a lot? Randomness/dice karma is fun when it's people, I find it less fun in CRPG's... I like to know WHY I failed or succeeded at things in computer games and what in theory is possible if I played differently.

I have found that even if I eventually break down and try the thing and like it, I am usually pretty sure that I wouldn't have been as in to it at the time that my gut went idk meh blurgh? so. Probably a good idea to trust your gut, no matter how incomprehensible it is. <3

Wake Me Up - Foals - I thank God that the first number someone asks is a Foals track. While I think the star on Foal's latest album "Life is Yours" is 2am, Wake Me Up is a fantastic track to guarantee you rouse yourself in the most ironic manner with a coffee and/or heart attack

Only Love - Ben Howard - Not my usual jam but I think I know why it appeared again despite it being nearly a decade old at this point - it's on one my follower playlists from 2015 so it occasionally turns up in the algorithmically generated playlists but it also plays on the restaurant playlist as well. I think it's a bit plastic at this point, a bit too... M&S advert mawkishness

Falcons - Amanda Bergman - Absolutely never heard of it up until this moment meaning it's on the restaurant playlist. And I... don't... hate... it? Okay I hate it a little. I got no problem with Scandiwegian indie folk but that one specific category is absolutely chockablock with artists that without a hook they tend to bleed into each other

I have one main character playlist for Beth Shepard and it's really just a mishmash of songs that capture a specific point in her story, songs that I think she'd listen to, and songs that are just kinda her.

Them Changes is a bit of a funky song (like pretty much everything else by Thundercat), but these lyrics stood out to me:

cold, lake, and/or shiver?

Oh, good ones!!! Let me see here...

1. this is from my Camp Nano original fic I've kind of been working on this month:

A soft rumble of thunder in the distance preceded the opening of the clouds and a cold rain began to fall.  And beneath it, they sat in silence and stillness, sharing thoughts of a future that was not expected…

2. Oh! This is from a future Shepard story featuring the illusive (elusive?) Sven Shepard - no lake, but how about some seas for you instead?

Weak rays of light filtered through overcast skies, shone down benignly on the boat and its crew.  For now, the seas were calm, the breeze gentle, but not far away, Kaidan spotted the first of the dark, thick clouds of the incoming winter storm as they encroached on the horizon.  High winds, ice, snow, high seas – all of it and more were expected over the next few days, bringing with it the greatest risk he’d faced since joining the crew of Trunda’s Tempest nearly two years ago. 

3. From the first post war fic for Caleb and Kaidan! (I know how you love Caleb! lol)

Shepard's determined tone sends an icy chill down Kaidan’s spine, memories of London, of the last time he saw him on the battlefield, come to mind.  Know that I love you … always.  Kaidan shivers and averts his gaze.
