ㅡ A CHARACTER STUDY: #2 - The Stage

references: lee minho (stray kids), lee jooheon (monsta x), lee taeyong (nct 127/u) habits: snarling, rolling his eyes, smirking, biting lip, licking lips, sneaky smiles, furrowing his brows favorite song(s) to preform: btbt, birthday, ring the alarm least favorite song to perform: none strengths: style, flair, conforming to the concept, breath control, presence weaknesses: having an issue finding a medium between a stellar performance and over performing, connecting to the audience when off-game

an idol since he was fourteen, #1 trainee, ex ace, center and leader of epik, malachi graces the stage with seasoned movements. with effortlessness and a slight raw look to his angles his soul goal is to perform so well that it distracts you from what is underneath. no need to dig deeper inside the shell that is kaiso, the way he glides across the stage is enough. his glances are pointed, frustrated and dark, only fading if the bass lets up just right. he doesn’t choose his facial expressions, they choose him. his training heavily western based there’s a swag to malachi’s dance that isn’t found in the average idol main dancer. it wasn’t the nailing of the movements but its execution and that is what matters. to pick a reference from above that emulates malachi the most would be a disservice, the second nature in one’s movements, the unremarkable swag and jagged execution of movements of another's, and the irreplaceable, original and organic style of the third all encompass the performance style of the soloist “kaiso”. each part of his body is its own and he shows you, excelling in the way he can isolate them with the flow of the choreography. music is his happy place, and while the thousands of eyes on him make it hard not seem so in his head if you really look at him, the sound of a melody sauntering into his in-ears always seems to revive the dormant idol with something to prove carrying an entire teams dreams on his back. it is the stage where malachi can shed every layer, part of the reason why he continues in this part of the idol world instead of allowing the underground to swallow him. a shy boy, afraid to speak his mind unless the entire room made him comfortable or if he’s high out his mind, gets to be the star, with thousands screaming and crying simply because of his presence. and when its all over, he is to retreat to his solitude, just as he imagined at fourteen.

but the longevity of his performance shown in his skill don’t mask the obvious disconnection in his eyes. it takes one wrong instance in his day to have him dancing full out without even feeling anything in the process. and that’s something that the train eye notices, which leads to most of his critiques coming from professionals. as the monotony of it all, makes his movements slightly robotic and too practiced to the trained eye.
