What is your favourite German book series??

It's called the Dark Reflections Trilogy by Kai Meyer (I read the English translations bc I can't read German so I'm not sure what the German title is)! The three books are called The Water Mirror, The Stone Light, and The Glass Word and god these books haunt me.

So the basic premise is it takes place in the late 1800's-early 1900's and starts in Venice, Italy. An ancient child Pharoah has been resurrected in Egypt and has waged war on the world with his undead soldiers and powerful magicians. Almost the entire world population has been killed and turned into soldiers and the only place left unconquered is Venice. Why? Bc the canals of Venice are protected by the Flowing Queen, an ancient deity of unknown origin who lives in the water itself.

The story follows three main characters: Merle (a young orphan girl who saves the Flowing Queen from being captured by spies and ends up sharing her body with the Queen to save her once they are forced to flee Venice and find outside help to save the city), Serafin (a former apprentice to a magic clothing weaver and friend of Merle's who ends up joining a secret rebellion to save Venice from spies and corrupt politicians looking to destroy the city now that the Flowing Queen has been removed), and Junipa (a blind orphan who becomes friends with Merle after they are offered apprenticeships with a magic mirror maker and has her eyes replaced with shards of magic mirror, thus allowing her to see things other people cannot for better or for worse).

Other amazing characters include Eft (the mysterious housekeeper who wears a mask on the lower half of her face), Arcimboldo (the magic mirror maker who takes Junipa and Merle in from the orphanage), Vermithrax (the Ancient Traitor locked away for eternity in a tower as punishment), Lalapeya (a Sphinx who has defected from the Pharoah's army and hides in Venice to command the secret rebellion that Serafin joins), and a frightening old man who lives in a room of mirrors and offers Hell's army to save Venice... For a price.

It's definitely a very different world that u gotta just accept and roll with and not question but it's genuinely one of my all time favorite book series ever. If you love fantasy worlds, you'll probably love the Dark Reflections Trilogy!

#other cool things is there are mermaid who have these massive ear to ear mouths full of razor sharp teeth #and lions mafe entirely of different kinds of stone and some even have wings #and a sea witch who's basically a mermaid the size of a fucking whale #begging on my hands and knees trying to find someone else who has read this book series #the concept of the Stone Light is nuts to me #a stone formed from the body of the fallen angel Lucifer that emits pure heavenly light #sick as fuck #anonymous
