CAUSE VS. CANON: Making the Case for Qcard
*Warning: May trigger some Qcard shippers*
I had an interesting conversation with a friend yesterday about loving certain dynamics in stories, like Star Trek's Qcard for example, and how nitpicker fans and shippers analyze the writers' work, the actors' performances, etc. to show that a dynamic/relationship is true/canon.
She insisted that if you look hard enough to find proof that a relationship between two characters is canon, or has validity, you will find it "*simply because you want it to be true, even if it's not.*" 😡😡😡
She called it "nitpicking for a cause."
As a devoted and longtime Qcard shipper, I bristled at her comment, and I proceeded to explain how writers intentionally weave dynamics into their scripts and stories through devices, including: parallels, such as STP S2's Q/Picard and Teresa/Rios, and through lines, such as STP S1: the butterfly motif, (Q)ueen cards, (Picard's unusual luck in surviving the explosion), which led to S2 Q's butterfly comments, the S2 trailer (Q)ueen card, The Sun/Q motif, Q, of course, and his lesson to Picard about opening himself up to love, so that he could be chosen by someone else to be loved in return. Then, in S3, we had Q's last minute return signaled by the Sun, and Picard allowing himself to love Jack and being accepted by Jack.
I also pointed out that Trek writers choose very specific words for actors to use at unusual times to indicate dynamics, too.
Ex: Picard (S2): I always filed Q as *unknowable.*
@porgthespacepenguin and @celestialholz both have meta-analyses on Qcard that beautifully prove Qcard as canon by the writers.
She still insisted at this point that I was nitpicking, intellectualizing dialogue, and over-analyzing all because I WANTED Qcard to be real.
Finally, I told her that writers, such as Cindy Appel, producers, like Akiva Goldsman, and Ron D. Moore, as well as actors Patrick Stewart and John de Lancie backed it up, too.
She then said, "Well, De Lancie was told to act a certain way and read the script."
I then pounced, saying that although actors follow scripts, they do have some agency in their performance. John de Lancie and Patrick Stewart both made deliberate choices in their portrayals, using certain types of body language, voice inflections, facial expressions that added credence to Qcard.
At this point, she gave up the fight and smartly so.
I mean for her or anyone else to suggest we Qcard shippers find those nuances/subtext/indications woven into a script and performance out of a desire or desperation for it to be canon irritates me.
My friend then asked me, "Why can't you just casually watch something, like Star Trek and enjoy it for what it is? Why all this analysis?"
It's a fair question.
I guess it's because while I can casually watch something and enjoy it at face value, other things, such as Qcard are like finding gold dust on the ground. You see gold on the surface, and it's great. You could make some money from selling that gold dust, sure.
But, if you dig just a bit deeper, you find a rich gold mine worth much more. Much more satisfying.
So, what do you think?
Was my friend correct in saying we Qcard shippers analyze and nitpick for The Cause?
Or, are we actually on to something?

idk if ur into trek anymore but i don't know any of the stuff you post about now so. uhhh q/picard or spock/mccoy or data/geordi pick one lol
Tumblr media
Qcard is like. well it's undeniably gay right I do see it. and I cannot fault my dear friends and mutuals who love it. but I am not one of those people. I just am not that big a fan of either character to be honest.
Tumblr media
spones....I like it but I feel it lacks a certain depth. the whole begrudgingly friends to lovers thing is something I like, but there just isn't that much there for them.
Tumblr media
daforge....my old love. I still enjoy it but not nearly as much as before. I think it suffers from overexposure, it's kind of like, THE data ship, and data is super popular, so you just have an overwhelming amount of it, and that's not necessarily a problem on its own, BUT I do feel like it does geordi a disservice, as almost all of his content is this ship, kind of like, demoting him to an accessory for data, very often focusing on data's development and not his.
btw I do still like star trek I'm just like, I got kinda burnt out on posting about it and I do have a Batman obsession right now.

Okay, but “Strawberry trapper” from Guilty Kiss in @kermitgotlost qcard playlist really has such realyl fitting lyrics for qcard:
I found you! Your eyes looked lonely Your heartbeat's calling out, saying "take me into your hands" Feeling so much heat but calm on the outside, I can enjoy that Hold down those growing feelings Quietly, collecting information about you Certainly, there's value in a sensitive mind Stepping up in the background, the thrill is unbearable Because once I've chosen my target, you can't run away.
To you, who loves quiet and solitude I'm firing an undeniable brilliant light I want to make you mine before you can realize My target is decided, you can't run away. You can't run away, my target!! (Trick in Dice) If I wager on love (Trick in Night) You can't back out (Trick in Heart) Life is a roulette I can only win (It's fate) Meeting you knowing that is wonderful If I feel special "Come into my possession" That hidden voice has the smell of berries, trap in one night A red berry, sweetly, strongly overflowing (Trick in Dice) If I wager on love (Trick in Night) You can't back out (Trick in Heart) Life is a roulette I can only win (Trap in Dice) I want to start (Trap in Night) From a trap of love (Trap in Heart) While dancing, play the roulette of life (It's fate) Ordinary is boring I want to feel special I want to steal you away I won't wait for you, sweet, sweet berry Red temptation in your heart, Berry Trapper, I've chosen my target

I was tagged in this by @aj-2187
(thanks!)
rules: answer last person tagged’s 11 questions and write 11 of your own
Questions from aj-2187:
1. Would you rather be on Voyager or Discovery in light of the recent events in that series?
well if I was on Discovery I’d be dead ig since ***spoiler alert*** they hopped on the “bury your gays” band wagon (tho admittedly they have said one is supposed to come back and the other may vaguely be alive) but I haven’t watched much Voyager yet so idk how I feel about it exactly so despite how angry I am about a lot of what’s going on with Discovery I think I’d still pick it bc Spock is a young man at that point in the original timeline and I want to have the possibility of meeting my bOY
2. Would you rather be in Starfleet or the spouse/partner of a member, or a civilian on a starship?
Um, in Starfleet, no question
3. If you were in Starfleet what would you want to be doing? Sciences? Command? Other?
I would WANT to do Command, but I think I lack the skills
4. Do you have any OC’s?
An absurd amount, yes, quite a few of whom are Star Trek OCs
5. If there were a chance for you to change some of the writing in only ONE of the Star Trek series, which one would it be and why?
Discovery, I think, because I think it had such great potential to be the most progressive and forwardthinking Trek yet— also I’m torn tho bc to rewrite TOS and make spirk (even MORE) explicitly and undeniably established is a dream? So idk lmao
6. Starfleet or the Maquis?
Starfleet but lowkey I’d do a bad job n let the Maquis get away if I had missions to stop them
7. Thoughts on the Prime Directive?
fake and made of lies and irrelevant most of the time (can you tell which captain I most relate to)
8. Least favorite alien?
eEEEEEE Klingons or Ferengi dON’T COME FOR ME
9. Who would you rather round-house kick in the jaw, Riker or the Doctor?
Riker bc I’m not into Voyager yet nor do I watch Doctor Who
10. Favorite ship/ least favorite ship? (this can be taken as relationship or literally a space ship)
AOS U.S.S. Enterprise i’m unsorry she’s the prettiest ship of them all — and it’s either spirk, daforge, qcard, yar/troi, culmets, or chuhura
11. If you could pick one character to be your best friend who would it be and why?
Spock because I’m obsessed with him and also it’s a three for one bc it’s not like Spock could exist and be around in a universe for long without Jim and Bones
my questions (I’m keeping the scifi theme going):
1.What shows/movies are you most excited for in 2018?
2.What Star Trek episode is your favorite, from any season of any of the series? What episode is your least favorite?
3.Which is your favorite Star Trek movie?
4.Which is your favorite Star Wars movie?
5.What other scifi movies/shows/games are your favorites?
6.How do you feel about fantasy as a genre?
7.Favorite sentient scifi robot/android from anything?
8.How do you feel about makeup?
9.If you could become a story writer for any ongoing tv show/game or movie series, what would you pick?
10.What’s your favorite thing about space?
11.If you could invent and use time travel would you? And what would you use it for?
I tag: @lesbijkas @saccharineseelie @sizzlingtragedyengineer @speedygal and anyone else who wants to do it!
(tag me back if you do it so I can see your answers!!)

Let's Qcard Discuss!
Tumblr media
Deja Q Discourse Analysis<
<<On the Bridge where now -human Q is begging Picard and his senior staff.>>
Picard: (irritated) "What is it you want, Q?"
Q: (looking softly and extending his face toward Picard) "Your compassion."
Picard rolls his eyes and looks away. Q looks annoyed and withdraws his head back a bit.
Q: "All right. Sanctuary on this ship. Dreary as it may be for the both of us."
**Qcard Questions + Thoughts**
1. Q really verbally "points" the word "compassion " at Picard, who has little patience for Q at this moment. But, ever notice how disappointed and let down Q looked and sounded when he had to downgrade from *compassion * to (boring), "dreary" *sanctuary*? Even his head movements show it.
AND
2. Q fixates ONLY on Picard in this dialogue segment. Everyone else on the Bridge might as well not be there at all. Only Picard matters to Q, as always. In Q's mind, he and Jean-Luc are in a separate world together.
Example:
Q: "Your compassion. "
Q: "....dreary as it may be for THE BOTH OF US."
Finally,
*Compassion* means something deeper to Q than *sanctuary.*
Compassion involves more feeling, and sympathy leading to possible soothing, perhaps? Following this line of logic, what kinds of *soothing * might Q be hoping to get from Picard? A back rub? Stroking? More what?
Well, obviously a chance to get closer to Picard, for starters. Picard would have to open up to Q to let that warm compassion come out.
The word *compassion * is definitely more loaded and goes deeper than "dreary sanctuary ".
Q's choice of the words referring to mere sanctuary on the ship as " dreary as it may be to the both of us" is soooo interesting because it implies that it will be more exciting for both he and Picard if Picard shows Q some *compassion *.
Oh, lovesick Q! Working hard to get his French captain's love any way he can. Whether declaring his love through big gestures, or subtly making suggestions in a conversation, Q is undeniably determined.
