MASSIVE FARMER'S PROTESTS OUTSIDE INDIAN CAPITAL AND ACROSS THE NORTH OF THE COUNTRY
📹 Massive protests are confronted with teargas, armed police with rubber bullets and drones as thousands of farmers, mostly in India's northern Punjab region, protest on Tuesday demanding a Minimum Support Price or MSP for all crops to raise farmer's income.
Dozens of Farmer's unions participated in the strikes, calling for a "Delhi Chalo" or March to Delhi.
Police in and around the capital have erected barriers on highways surrounding New Delhi, and have begun firing tear gas and rubber bullets at the approaching farmers.
Tractors, along with thousands of farm hands, are seen in footage nearing the outskirts of New Delhi, in the northern Haryana state, being confronted by officers with gas and smoke bombs, including some dropped from buzzing drones overhead.
Authorities have shut down Internet services in some areas where protestors approach, and have erected concrete roadblocks and barriers, while local officials have banned public gatherings and are deploying extra security personnel.
Officials in New Delhi emphasized that sufficient police and paramilitary personnel have been deployed to all entry points to the city.
Farmers are demanding dozens of changes, including a new MSP or floor price for crops to increase and guarantee farmer income, as well as a full debit waiver, according to local union officials.
Political officials in New Delhi say they're open to talks, with Agriculture Minister, Arjun Munda telling reporters on Tuesday that the Federal government already is "bound to protect the interest of farmers."
"Farmers also need to understand that inconvenience shouldn’t be caused to the public,” Minister Munda said, adding the government was always ready for negotiations with the Farmer's unions.
“We are ready to do everything possible to find a solution to this issue,” he said.

Canadian news organizations and federal political leaders are having their accounts blocked by Twitter after tweeting about the Indian government’s suppression of civil liberties in Punjab.
The Indian government has taken draconian measures to suppress “anti-national sentiments” in the state of Punjab, including cutting Internet access for millions, banning group gatherings and invoking colonial-era laws that give police the power to detain people for up to 12 months without charges, as they search for Amritpal Singh, a popular but controversial Sikh activist and separatist figure.
Police in Punjab justify their self-described “mega crackdown” as a way to stop the spread of “fake news,” but critics say authorities are silencing dissent and helping the government spread disinformation.
The crackdown has also impacted the ability of Canadian journalists and politicians to provide accurate information or voice concerns. [...]

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - India's foreign minister on Thursday hit out at Canada for allowing a float in a parade depicting the 1984 assassination of Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by her bodyguards, perceived to be glorification of violence by Sikh separatists.
"I think there is a larger underlying issue about the space which is given to separatists, to extremists, to people who advocate violence," S. Jaishankar told reporters in New Delhi while commenting about the tableau in a parade.
Tumblr media
"I think it is not good for relationships, not good for Canada," he said.
Canada's High Commissioner for India also condemned the incident at a parade by Sikh activists in the Canadian city of Brampton. Video circulated in recent days on the internet showed a tableau from the parade featuring Gandhi wearing a blood-stained white saree with her hands up as turban-clad men pointed guns at her. A poster behind the scene read: "Revenge".
"I am appalled by reports of an event in Canada that celebrated the assassination of late Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi," Cameron MacKay said on Twitter.
"There is no place in Canada for hate or for the glorification of violence. I categorically condemn these activities."
Reuters was not immediately able to reach the organisers of the parade for comment.
Tumblr media
Indira Gandhi was assassinated in 1984 by two Sikh bodyguards after she allowed the storming of the holiest Sikh temple, aimed at flushing out Sikh separatists who demanded an independent homeland to be known as Khalistan.
The storming of the temple angered Sikhs around the world. The death toll in the attack remains disputed, with Indian authorities putting it in the hundreds and Sikh groups in the thousands.
Canada has the highest population of Sikhs outside their home state of Punjab in India.
Earlier this year India summoned Canada's High Commissioner to convey concern over pro-Khalistan protesters in Canada who breached the security of India's diplomatic mission and consulates.
Bilateral commercial relations between the two countries are worth $100 billion, which includes $70 billion of Canadian portfolio investment, according to Indian figures.

Note
That's my point. You've made it clear that you live in a place densely populated with Sikhs. Second to majority as you mentioned. I don't. Result is the only other sikh in my class wears a cap ALL. THE. TIME. INCLUDING INDOORS. Because since 2020, which saw a major spike in sikhophobia, kids think it's perfectly fine to call him a khalistani for no reason at all. This dude has never presented a political opinion, let alone an extreme separatist one. Literally I cannot see where they were coming from except for just the fact that he's a Sikh but it's genuinely devastating to see him cover his pagdi every single day without fail. I'm lucky I don't face the same cuz well I'm a woman and I don't look Sikh.
But ok that's an isolated incident, if I talk of why exactly this started happening in 2020 it's because that's the stuff those kids heard their parents say at home because that was the fucking response to the farmers' protest, something that had absolutely nothing to do with religion. Religion was dragged into the debate because a majority of those farmers were sikh and their demands that had NOTHING to do with a separatist movement got brushed off as khalistani terrorism. This was around the time when Modi made his visit to Punjab or attempted to (it was a pretty big deal, it was all over the news), his route had protestors on it and man the reaction supporters of the party had to it? Literally one Google search away. There's literal MLA's of the party talking of a repeat of the '84 genocide. MLAs. And it's these very people who call Sikhism a sect of Hinduism which is an entirely different load of horse crap. But it's just the fact that they have thee audacity to say that but then a moment a Sikh person says something they don't like (it doesn't even have to be related to religion, in fat bonus points if it ain't) that person becomes a khalistani.
This isn't woke, acknowledging that yes, a minority community does face marginalisation (big shocker) is basic fucking decency. Your reaction to this is exactly like the reaction of a white person being told that they might be racist. 'What?! I have black friends. They get treated equally.'
It's hard for people to hear that their community might be marginalising another, especially if they don't do it personally because it makes them feel attacked. But the matter of truth is that your reaction is absolutely not how a decent person responds to the idea of someone being oppressed. You usually wait to get educated on the topic before you form an opinion on it and especially before you mock someone else's pian over it. Also you need to realise for the future that if you don't see a certain problem in the society around you doesn't mean it doesn't exist, it could very well mean that you are just lucky enough to not encounter. This applies to all contexts.
I usually wouldn't pester a kid but I needed you to hear this because your opinion could potentially hurt someone and over the internet, they wouldn't know you're a kid (like I didn't when I sent the previous ask) and I would hate for someone to form a bad opinion of you over it. Everything I've told you isn't guaranteed to change your opinion over the matter, in fact I doubt it will, but atleast after this whatever opinion you hold, no matter how hurtful, will be an educated opinion and you ought to take responsibility for it because 14, no matter how young, is still enough age to tell right and wrong apart. That's all I have to say to you and I won't be sending asks again.
Firstly, the hat incident you refer to, as devastating as it is, was practically impossible for any Haryanvi/Punjabi to relate to, so please don’t blame me for not seeing what you were referring to. Its like being from Arkansas but then shouting at a Californian for not seeing the racism.
Secondly, where’s this incident happening? Maybe you’re right, its my lack of knowledge and education on the issue, so please tell me as to atleast what state this is so I can make a decent, dedicated post on the issue if I see the arising need. I’m so sorry you had to go through that, but can you give me the details so I know what I’m looking into here?
As of the farmer’s protest, I think you are forgetting a major, and I mean very major factor that lead to the issue being labeled as Khalistan: there were khalistanis involved. How it is that you managed to ignore the bit about how khalistani outfit sikhs for justice started propagating it for ulterior motives, another one made toolkit for it, or when Sikh extremists beheaded a lower caste Sikh over the disrespect of the book is beyond me.
How it is that you say that it doesn’t have seperatist influence is astounding. Religious influence of sikhism? Not. Khalistani influence? Totally.
Offcourse, I’m not saying that the issue WASN’T about farmer’s rights and all, most of it prolly was, but lets not act like it wasn’t hijacked for ulterior motives by various anti India groups. The toolkit leaking and the pro seperatism handles suddenly and simultaneously supporting the cause says it all.
I don’t think everyone involved, or for that matter everyone who wasn’t proven guilty deserved to be shunned as Khalistani, but the thing is, if there was a pro muslim movement going on that got hijacked by likes of the now gone PFI, no one would care how it started or what the beginning cause was. Or am I wrong?
That’s just how the it works, I’m not trying to sound ignorant, I’m trying to say this rationally so please think about this for once, but if one is leading a cause and sees it getting infested by some other reason, its only his/her job to make sure that same doesn’t get to represent the movement. The protesting farmers sat by and watched as a religious flag was put on in front of the red fort, what were people expecting? NOT being labelled religious fundamentalists? (Once again clearing the fact that I don’t believe the sikh community deserve a blame for this. Shitheads exist in every religion.)
The BJP MLA bit? Yeah, pretty sad if I’m being honest. I won’t equate it to being the same as persecution at a central level, because of my own experiences, but I’ve said once before on my main that I feel like BJP has the worst, And I mean THE WORST lot when it comes to local leaders. Leave Sikhophobia, I won’t even put Rape and Genocide supporting above them. They’ve even shit talked Budhhists and demanded Hindu women to be baby making machines.
Even a few CMs have proven to be mildly (albeit not anywhere NEAR as much of asshats as the MLAs) problematic if I remember. The only way I can sleep at night is knowing that people like these will never be in power, because they can only run their mouths, not the country. Even the Higher ups at NDA seem to be aware of that. Believe me, if someone like that ever comes to hold a prominent position, I’ll book both of us a one way ticket to the nopetopia.
All in all, while I feel like I can’t be blamed for not seeing the issue because actual headlines of Sikh persecution are unseen around here, because maybe its rather remote or unheard of on both national and local level for me, I’m always open to know more so that I know what kind of issues deserve light and to be brought to mainstream.
So please, do tell me more. I want to be aware of the whole cause and be of help if the situation is for real that dire.
PS I’m not a kid🗿

Ishq, Inshallah
Is Kashmir getting on the South Asia’s music map?
By Faisul Yaseen
Faheem Abdullah and Rauhan Malik’s recent song ‘Ishq’ from ‘Lost; Found’ album has immortalised the work of Amir Ameer, a poet from Rahim Yar Khan, a city in the Punjab province of Pakistan.
It is breaking the internet and becoming a trending meme song. The song is also bringing closer music lovers across India and Pakistan, who are raving about Ameer’s mesmerising poetry and soothing voice of Abdullah and Malik. ‘Ishq’ may not be the best thing to have happened to the Kashmir music industry but it certainly has attracted traction and could play its part in putting Kashmir on South Asia’s music map.
Tumblr media
Though boasting of rich musical instrumentals, magical voices, and insightful poetry, Kashmir’s music industry has suffered over the decades due to the Kashmiri language’s limited reach as only 6.8 million people speak Kashmiri. However, the experimentation of composing Urdu songs by young Kashmiri singers like Abdullah and Malik and a crop of new-generation Kashmiri singers is making the canvas bigger for them as Urdu boasts 71.29 million native speakers while the language is also understood by 571.3 million native Hindi speakers.
Like Abdullah and Malik, someone who took this experimentation to new heights in Kashmir was Yawar Abdal, a new-age Kashmiri singer who, in 2017, experimented with his single, ‘Tamana’, a multilingual song in Kashmiri, Urdu, and Persian languages based on the poetry of three legendary poets: Mehjoor (Kashmiri), Mirza Ghalib (Urdu), and Amir Khusru (Persian). The song became an instant hit on the internet. Abdal’s best work to date though might not be ‘Tamama’ but a lesser hit ‘Inshallah’. It is an artistic genius: multilayered and ambiguous and shakes a listener out of placid.
Tumblr media
Abdal may not have the best voice among the new-age Kashmiri singers but he is heads and shoulders above others when it comes to crafting his work. Like his unconventional music, the visualisation in his music videos touches raw nerves and asks questions that only great art can.
Tumblr media
Canadian pop artist Grimes says, “Only art ever saved me, everything else has betrayed me.” And Abdal’s music and music videos never betray your trust.
Tumblr media
Jyotsna Bharti in ‘Mixing Old Melody with New Melancholy: Meet Kashmir’s Fresh Folksingers’ writes, “At a time when youngsters elsewhere are de-rooting themselves and trying westerns, many new-age Kashmiri musicians and singers are popularising their roots. Following the footsteps of their forefathers, they’re finding solace in Rabab, pleasures in poetries and life in mountains…”
These new-age Kashmiri singers like Ali Saifuddin, Mohammad Muneem Nazir, Saim Bhat, Ishfaq Kawa, Rasiq Khan, Waqar Khan, Kabul Bukhari, Arsalan Nizami, Ubair Taj Beigh, Baabarr, Mudacer, Shazia Bashir, Aabha Hanjura, Vibha Saraf, and Rahul Wanchoo wear Kashmir on their sleeves, sport Kashmiri shawls and Pherans, use traditional musical instruments, and shoot music videos in the picturesque locales.
They have taken a leaf out of the book of their ancestors like Raja Begum, Shamima Dev Azad, Ghulam Hassan Sofi, Abdul Rashid Hafiz, Kailash Mehra Sadhu, and Neeraja Pandit and popularised it among the new generations of Kashmir offering them music from their roots and educating them that Kashmiri music might be as rich as the Bollywood and western music and much like the Punjabi music could carve out an identity of its own.
Tumblr media
Kashmiri music represents its rich melodic heritage. It has played a significant role in shaping and expressing its cultural identity. Kashmiri music has served as a powerful tool to preserve Kashmiri traditions, values, and stories.
Kalhana in his magnum opus ‘Rajatarangini’ wrote in the 12th Century CE that Kashmiri musical instruments have extremely aged roots. A 4th-century CE tile found during excavation from Harwan shows the impression of a female musician playing a drum. The other person is shown playing a veena. King Bhiksacara (1120-21 CE), who himself played these instruments was fond of ‘Chhakri’ (folk choral singing) which continues to be popular in Kashmir.
According to Kalhana, folk musical instruments like earthen pots and brass vessels were used by Kashmiri people from very early times. Prominent musical instruments played in Kashmir include Surnai, Santoor, Saitar, Nai, Tumbaknari, Noot, and Rabab.
Tumblr media
Tumkanari (goblet drum) is usually used by womenfolk on occasions like engagement and marriage functions. In Central Asia Tumkanari called Tumbakh or Tunbak is now made of wood while Kashmir maintains its originality and the musical instrument is still made of baked clay. Similarly, the use of Noet (earthen pot) in Kashmiri music is mentioned in Nilmata Purana as well as Kalhana’s Rajtarangini.
Tumblr media
Kashmiri music also has influences from the Central Asian music.
“We even borrowed their music and instruments,” historian Prof Fida Muhammad Hassnain wrote in ‘Common Cultural Links between Kashmir and Central Asia’.
According to B C Deva, the string instruments, Rabab and Sarangi, came to Kashmir with the influence of Muslims.
While some historians state that the most popular instrument used in folk music in Kashmir is the Rabab borrowed from Persia, others suggest it was adopted from Afghanistan centuries ago and has been an integral part of Kashmiri music culture ever since.
Tumblr media
These musical instruments have also played a key role in the evolution of Kashmiri Sufiana music.
The instruments used by the Sufiana musicians are quite different from those used in Indian classical music and Kashmiri folk music. The prominent instruments include Santoor, Kashmiri Saitar, Saaz-e-Kashmir, and Tabla.
Shabir Ahmad Mir in his paper ‘Mystical Music: Safeguarding Sufiana Mausiqi – a Vanishing Art Form of Kashmir’ for the International Journal of Intangible Heritage writes, “Sufiana mausiqi (music) continued to flourish during the reign of Sultan Yusuf Shah Chak (1579-1586). His queen, Habba Khatun, is often credited with introducing a maqam ‘Rast-Kashmiri’ by making a little structural variation on maqam Rast-Farsi. Chak and his queen were great patrons of music as well as musicians themselves, and they devoted their time to embellishing Kashmiri classical music. Rast-Kashmiri still forms the most popular maqam of the Sufiana repertory.”
In Kashmir, marriage and engagement functions, Eid festivals, Radio Kashmir Srinagar, and Doordarshan Kendra Srinagar played a key role in keeping the Kashmiri music alive.
Tumblr media
Music often has a massive cultural impact as is illustrated by the influence of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. The Beatles is considered as the most influential band in the history of popular music and for defining the countercultural movement of the 1960s. Similarly, The Rolling Stones, considered one of the greatest Rock n Roll bands of all time with their raw energy and rebellious image defined the cultural landscape of the 1960s and beyond.
Tumblr media
Abdullah, Malik, and Abdal may just have begun their musical journeys but the route they are taking to their stardom might shape Kashmir’s musical heritage for future generations. Who knows next ‘Coke Studio’ shift in South Asia could come from the Valley! Ishq and Inshallah might be the shape of things to come from Kashmir.

10 Expert Packing Tips for a Stress-Free Moving Experience!
Moving from one place to another involves an endless series of stressful events. Are you moving from Gurgaon to Delhi to Punjab? Then there would be countless tasks around you demanding your time and attention and countless oddities. But you know what the good news is? That's right, you can trust the professionals - Packers and Movers Gurgaon and take a moment to read this blog post on the tips we've compiled!
Tumblr media
Take your move list and notice if anything is missing from your move plan.
• Get your hands on the ideal packing materials
To begin the packing task, you must have an adequate supply of the necessary packing materials. Although your chartered moving team will provide you with packing support as they take care of your packing and moving needs, it is good to prepare for packing needs in advance so that you can participate in at least part of the care yourself. pack yourself up and save money.
• Stock up on basic packing materials
When it comes to packing materials, you may have several items that you might have left over. For example, moving boxes, corrugated cardboard boxes of different sizes, film, moving blankets, bubble wrap, etc. should be included so that these things do not run out during packing. The best way to get all these products in bulk is to order them online or simply get them from the wholesale market.
• Discuss moving priorities with experts
One of the best tips is to discuss everything in detail with moving professionals so they can organize their moving supplies and equipment accordingly. As a customer, you are bound to have certain concerns and requirements, and when you inform them of a team of packaging experts, you can be sure that they will serve your valuables.
• Know what everything needs to be packed very securely
We recommend letting professionals take care of all your expensive and sensitive items because they are well trained in this field and have everything with them to make the job run smoothly. What you can do is tell them about your collection of special objects, collectibles, beautiful objects, delicate objects, sculptures, paintings, pictures, paintings, etc. so that they can take care of them in the best way.
• Start packing as early as possible
Even if professionals do all the packing and moving for you, you should take care of the part of the goods that you thought you could handle yourself in time. Since we are not very familiar with packing and handling techniques, it is easier to make mistakes along the way and damage valuables and goods. So let the experts take care of your affairs. But still, if you're ready to pack your most valuable things yourself, we suggest you be smart and search the Internet for the best packing techniques.
• Manage time while packing
There is a chance that our goods will be damaged while packing goods alone. Therefore, it is better to be careful during the process. Choose a clean and spacious packing area. This way you can complete the packing task much easier and in much less time. Also, if you've been thinking about doing a significant portion of your packing task yourself, it's best to start early and allow enough time for each item at hand. You can even ask your family members for help or even call your friends for help.
• Avoid packing any extra/unwanted items
Relocations are meant to be made the easier way – with only the needful items and nothing extra. This is because when you pack every single item from your place, you not only raise your moving load but significantly raise your moving cost as well. So, it is important to pack and move only those things that you will need in your new home. You should follow this strategy for all your possessions – whether it is about your clothing, or artifacts, kitchenware, or furniture.
• Be sensible, be smart, think long-term
Packing and moving every single item from your household shall not serve any purpose. So, you should be smart enough to decide which articles are worth moving and which items can be left aside to be dealt with in some other way. For that, what you can do is check every item from your space, and then decide whether packing and moving them makes any sense or not. You should not be sentimental in parting ways with your objects if it is not even serving you but is simply consuming your storage space.
• Finalize the inventory, inspect everything
There has to be a list of inventory you need to prepare once you have come across the items you are planning to move with you. Having a detailed inventory would let you ensure if everything from your household has been packed well and nothing is left behind. You can refer to this list of items again, once the consignment gets delivered to your address. Take note if any package is missing or damaged.
• Check every package before it gets loaded
If your goods are packed well, and securely shifted into the moving vehicle, you can simply be sure if the placement of the cartons and moving boxes has been carried out well. Kulhad Pizza Couple Goes Viral Again, This Time for a Romantic Reason
Tumblr media
Sehaj Arora and Gurpreet Kaur, the enterprising couple from Jalandhar, Punjab, have become familiar faces online, but their journey to internet fame has been a rollercoaster ride. Initially recognized for their unique "Kulhad Pizza" concept, their story took a sharp turn with a leaked MMS video controversy in September 2023. However, their recent heartwarming vacation video proves their resilience and reignites the internet's interest in them, this time for a more positive reason. https://www.instagram.com/reel/C52pV5GPXu4/?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==
The Rise of the Kulhad Pizza Couple
Sehaj and Gurpreet first garnered attention for their innovative approach to pizza. They carved a niche by serving pizzas on traditional Indian clay pots called "kulhads." This eco-friendly and visually appealing twist on a classic dish captured the hearts (and stomachs) of many. Their success story, fueled by social media buzz, was a testament to their entrepreneurial spirit and ability to tap into a growing trend of sustainable food practices. A Stormy Interlude: The Leaked Video Controversy Unfortunately, their journey took a dark turn in September 2023 when a private video of the couple was leaked online. The MMS went viral, creating a media frenzy and causing immense personal distress for Sehaj and Gurpreet. Initially, they maintained the video was a deepfake, a desperate attempt to combat the humiliation and invasion of privacy. However, the situation escalated when they accused a former employee of leaking the video for extortion purposes. The controversy unfolded amidst the arrival of their baby, adding another layer of complexity to the ordeal. A Heartwarming Comeback: The Romantic Vacation Video Fast forward to the present, and a recent video shared by Sehaj on his social media offers a refreshing change of pace. It showcases the couple on a romantic vacation, enjoying a blissful stroll on a beach. The lighthearted video features them lip-syncing to a Bollywood song, portraying a carefree and affectionate relationship. Reportedly filmed in Dubai, the video has garnered over 149,000 likes in just four days, becoming a viral sensation. This heartwarming comeback video is a welcome change for fans who genuinely connected with Sehaj and Gurpreet's entrepreneurial spirit. It serves as a reminder of their resilience in the face of adversity. The internet seems receptive to their positive update, with many comments expressing well wishes and highlighting their relationship goals.
The Road Ahead: Lessons Learned and Moving Forward
The story of the Kulhad Pizza couple is a complex one, filled with both triumphs and tribulations. It highlights the double-edged sword of social media, capable of propelling individuals to fame but also exposing them to the harsh realities of online scrutiny. While the leaked video incident undoubtedly caused immense pain, Sehaj and Gurpreet's recent video showcases their ability to move forward and focus on their love and growing family. Looking ahead, their journey holds valuable lessons for aspiring online personalities and entrepreneurs. It emphasizes the importance of building a strong brand identity, navigating the unpredictable world of social media, and prioritizing personal well-being. Whether they choose to continue captivating audiences with their culinary creations or venture into new territories, Sehaj and Gurpreet's resilience and unwavering support for each other promises to keep their story interesting.

Revolution on the Roads: Delhi Farmer Protest Movement
The “Farmer Protest Delhi Farmer Go Delhi” movement marks a watershed moment in the history of agrarian activism in India. Originating in response to contentious agricultural laws passed by the Indian government, this movement has captured global attention with its scale, resilience, and determination. As farmers, predominantly from the states of Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh, converged on the borders of the Indian capital, Delhi, they not only demanded the repeal of the new farm laws but also sought to shed light on the systemic challenges plaguing India’s agricultural sector.
At its heart, the farmer protest in Delhi is a manifestation of the deep-rooted grievances of India’s farming community. The three contentious laws, passed in September 2020, aimed to deregulate agricultural markets, allowing farmers to sell their produce directly to private buyers. However, farmers feared that these laws would dismantle the existing system of government-regulated wholesale markets, leaving them vulnerable to exploitation by large corporations. Despite assurances from the government, farmers remained steadfast in their opposition, viewing the laws as a threat to their livelihoods and autonomy.
Since November 2020, the borders of Delhi have transformed into epicenters of resistance, with makeshift camps and tractor-trolleys serving as symbols of protest. The movement has been marked by its peaceful nature, with farmers employing sit-ins, road blockades, and hunger strikes to amplify their demands. Solidarity has poured in from various quarters, including activists, politicians, and celebrities, further galvanizing the movement and drawing attention to the plight of farmers.
The farmer go delhi for protest has not only been about legislative reform but has also underscored broader issues such as agrarian distress, rural poverty, and the widening gap between farmers and policymakers. For decades, Indian farmers have grappled with inadequate support mechanisms, ranging from access to credit and irrigation to fair prices for their produce. The protest has served as a stark reminder of the urgent need for comprehensive agricultural reforms that prioritize the welfare of farmers and ensure a sustainable future for Indian agriculture.
The resilience of the protesting farmers has been put to the test, particularly in the face of adverse weather conditions, logistical challenges, and attempts to discredit their movement. Despite facing numerous obstacles, including internet shutdowns and barricades erected by authorities, the farmers have remained undeterred in their pursuit of justice. Their unwavering resolve and spirit of unity have inspired admiration and solidarity not only within India but also across the globe.
As the farmer protest in Delhi continues to unfold, it has become a defining moment in India’s socio-political landscape, reflecting the power of grassroots mobilization and collective action. Beyond its immediate objectives, the movement has sparked conversations about democracy, social justice, and the role of citizens in shaping policy decisions. Whether it leads to a resolution remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: the voices of India’s farmers can no longer be ignored, and their struggle has become emblematic of a larger quest for a more equitable and inclusive society.

Pakistan’s real test begins after election, say analysts
Lahore, Pakistan – Four months after Pakistan was originally scheduled to hold national elections, the country’s 128 million voters will on Thursday get the chance to pick their next federal government amid a pre-poll crackdown on former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s party and a climate of political and economic instability.
More than 90,000 polling booths spread across the nation of 241 million people will open at 8am local time (03:00 GMT).

In addition to the 266 seats in the country’s National Assembly, voters will also elect members to the legislatures of Pakistan’s four provinces. In the National Assembly, a party needs at least 134 seats to secure an outright majority. But parties can also form a coalition to reach the threshold.
Voting will continue until 5pm local time (12:00 GMT), and if the tabulation of results occurs smoothly, the winner could be clear within a few hours.
Yet, analysts are already cautioning that the true test of Pakistan’s tryst with democracy will begin after the elections, when a new government will be confronted by a host of challenges it will inherit, and questions over its very legitimacy.
“While the election results might bring a sense of temporary stability, it is increasingly clear to the public and party leaders alike that long-term sustainability can only be achieved when this cycle of political engineering is broken,” analyst and columnist Danyal Adam Khan said, referring to a widespread sentiment in Pakistan that the election process has been influenced by the country’s powerful military establishment to deny a fair chance to Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party.
Just a day before the election, three bomb blasts, two in southwestern Balochistan and one in Karachi, Sindh, left more than 30 people dead. Over the past year, more than 1,000 people have been killed in violence across the country. Despite assurances from the interim government, fears of internet closure in some areas as well as some election-day violence persist.
And the economy is in the doldrums, with inflation hovering around 30 percent, 40 percent of the population below the poverty line, a fast-depreciating currency and nearly three-fourths of the population convinced, according to recent polling, that things could get even worse.
Turning tables
Many voters and experts have told Al Jazeera that those challenges have been compounded by attempts to subvert free and fair elections.
In Thursday’s elections, the top contender is three-time former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, called the “Lion of Punjab” by his supporters. If his Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN) wins the most seats, he could potentially become prime minister for a record fourth time.
However, critics argue that his frontrunner status isn’t due to an inspirational campaign, but rather the machinations of Pakistan’s most powerful entity: the military establishment.
Six years ago, Sharif found himself in their crosshairs, first disqualified from the premiership in 2017 and then jailed on corruption charges for 10 years in 2018, just two weeks before elections.
His removal and the PMLN’s downfall were seemingly orchestrated to pave the way for former cricketer and philanthropist Imran Khan’s rise to power. While their initial honeymoon seemed promising, cracks emerged, and after nearly four years, Khan became the first Pakistani prime minister deposed through a no-confidence vote, continuing a telling trend in the country’s 77-year history: no PM has ever completed their five-year term
Khan’s relationship with the military hit its lowest point on May 9, 2023, when he was briefly arrested for corruption. His party workers and supporters rioted in response, targeting government and military installations.
For a country with more than three decades of direct military rule, where the army as an institution is deeply woven into the social fabric, the state’s response to Khan and the PTI was brutal. Thousands of party workers were arrested, and key leaders were forced to resign. Khan himself faced more than 150 cases, many apparently frivolous. He was eventually jailed last August in a corruption case, leading to his disqualification from the election. Last week, he received multiple convictions in different cases.
However, the biggest blow for the party before the February 8 election came in January, when their iconic “cricket bat” electoral symbol was revoked for violating internal party election rules.
The decision meant that Khan and his party, arguably the most popular in the country according to opinion polls, had no option but to field candidates as independents, each with their own symbol.
The PTI also alleges harassment and even abductions of their candidates, forcing them to cut short their campaigns. The party has complained of restrictions imposed on rallies and media coverage of their plight. These allegations have led experts to consider this one of the most tainted elections in the country’s history.
Sharif’s return in November last year coincided with his rival’s imprisonment, and all his convictions and charges were dropped within weeks. A Supreme Court ban on him from contesting elections was lifted, paving the way for him to lead his party.
With Khan behind bars, Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, son of former President Asif Ali Zardari and two-time ex-Premier Benazir Bhutto, appears to be the second strongest contender.
As the scion of the Bhutto dynasty and leader of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), Bhutto-Zardari has campaigned across the country, though the PPP’s core support remains mainly in Sindh.
‘Mockery of democracy’
The crackdown on the PTI has raised questions about the legitimacy of the elections among many analysts.
Danyal Adam Khan, the columnist, said that while the political clampdown is not completely unprecedented, what has transpired before the polls is a “flagrant mockery” of the democratic process.
“Despite the PTI’s own role in promoting a culture of vilifying political opponents, their success at the polls is a matter for the public to decide,” he told Al Jazeera.
Political analyst Benazir Shah acknowledged the history of manipulation in Pakistan’s elections but said that young voters – the country’s largest demographic – had a chance to make their voices heard.
“Out of Pakistan’s 128 million voters, over 45 percent are between the ages of 18 and 35. Historically, they have not contributed a lot in elections, but it is their moment to shine and voice their opinion,” she said.
Pakistan has historically had a relatively low turnout in polls, with only the previous two elections (in 2013 and 2018) witnessing a turnout of more than 50 percent since 1985.
According to election statistics, from 1997 onwards, the voter turnout of those between the ages of 18 and 30 never crossed 40 percent, reaching a high of 37 percent in 2018.
“Despite all the allegations of pre-poll rigging, I am still hoping for a high voter turnout, where the young people come in and vote for the party of their choice,” the Lahore-based Shah said.
Beyond concerns over political persecution, the dire economic situation looms large. Inflation and currency devaluation paint a grim picture.
The country was on the brink of a default last year when in June, then-Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif managed to get a $3bn International Monetary Fund (IMF) loan package, which is set to expire by March.
Addressing the economy will be the next government’s paramount responsibility, said former Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi. And to do that, he said, the country’s incoming leaders will need credibility.
“Pakistan is still suffering from the political and economic fallout of the manipulated elections in 2018 [when Sharif was effectively forced out of contention]. However, any perception of manipulation in the 2024 elections will be greatly detrimental for the economy,” he told Al Jazeera.
With the latest opinion polls forecasting a win for the PMLN, questions have been raised about whether the results on February 9 can bring some sort of stability in the country’s volatile political landscape.
Danyal Adam Khan said he expects frustration and anger from those feeling disenfranchised but warns against perpetuating a cycle of vengeance.
Analyst Shah also expressed pessimism, fearing further societal polarisation if the PTI feels unfairly represented.
“I feel there will be further divisiveness in the society if one political party and its voters [PTI] will think they have been suppressed and they will feel they were not given fair representation in the polls. This will be quite damaging to the country in the long run,” she added.
Former PM Abbasi said he was sensing a lack of public interest in the elections, reflecting a lack of optimism.
It would be vital, he said, for Pakistan to develop clarity over the relationships between its political, judicial, and military institutions.
“The post-election scenario will be dependent on the ability of the country’s leadership to address all these issues,” the ex-premier said. “Hope for solutions is at a premium, so we can only hope for optimism to prevail.”
