Privilege and Nature

When I think about the role privilege plays in nature interpretation, the first thing that comes to mind is the access one has to nature. Nature surrounds us everywhere, yet the experience of being in a national park in another city or being able to witness marine life in another country is distinct and not universally accessible. Thus, the opportunity to interpret nature in a different perspective is also not available to everyone as it depends on privilege. McIntosh describes privilege as “an invisible knapsack of unearned assets… of special provisions, maps, passports, codebooks, visas, clothes, tools, and blank checks” (McIntosh, 2000, p. 116). This metaphor encapsulates everything required to approach nature in a different perspective.

In my eyes, the definition of privilege is the ability certain groups of people have to freely engage in opportunities that are often taken for granted. I, myself have been guilty of taking opportunities for granted. If I were to unpack my own backpack, it would reveal that I am a first generation South Asian, middle class university student. Despite being part of a minority group, I am privileged enough to have the same opportunities as most Canadians with very limited barriers. I am lucky enough to possess the capability to explore nature as I benefit from a wealth of knowledge available at my fingertips through the internet and other means. As well, due to clothes, tools, and a Canadian passport, ensuring I can do so without any apprehension.

Privilege has definitely affected my interpretation of nature. One of these ways is through access to nature. Growing up with privilege can make it easy to overlook the challenges associated with accessing natural spaces like national parks which may require things like a passport or vehicle to access. Individuals who grow up with privilege may not consider their access to nature as a unique advantage, and they may not appreciate the gift of having easy access to green spaces, especially in comparison to those with lower socioeconomic status.

Cultural barriers can also affect the role privilege plays with nature interpretation. It influences how people see and understand nature, affecting their connection with the environment. For instance, my parents grew up in Punjab, India and both their families own farms and worked in the agricultural setting as they grew up planting crops and milking cows. Growing up in a rural area, they always had a deep appreciation for nature. Ecological sustainability was passed down through generations and allowed us as a family to actively contribute to conservation efforts and sustainable practices even as we live in the city today, far disconnected from the rural area my parents knew for most of their life.

I recognize the privilege I have today and the reason why I am able to immerse myself in order to interpret and engage with nature. Recognizing this privilege is essential to promote a more open conversation and a range of other ways we can create an egalitarian access to nature so others can also experience the same opportunities to enjoy the nature around us.

Will Coronavirus Open up our Minds?

With the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the entire world has confined themselves to their homes to battle this terrible situation that all of us are experiencing now. I am also certain that a lot of us are a lot more active on social media these days because let’s face it, we have absolutely nothing to do. Just a joke! Honestly, it brings me great happiness to see that people are engaged in a lot of activities that involve cooking, drawing, painting, dancing, and several others. The best part is that these talents are showcased by people whom we never imagined doing it. At the same time, from a different angle of social media, we see lots of posts about how the world is healing altogether. Yes, I am specifically talking about the fact that dolphins have returned to the canals of Venice due to the water turning so clean, the northern state of Punjab in India being able to witness the Himalayas in decades due to the immense decrease in the levels of pollution and so on. Many of us are even happy to see and hear about it. But there comes the question. Is this sustainable?

Let’s rewind a little. The country which was initially hit by the coronavirus was China. Slowly, it started spreading to other countries, actually, parts of the world would be a better choice of phrases, Europe, Asia, the Middle East and the western parts including the USA and Canada. One by one the countries started to go into lockdown, a word that I have only heard in movies and within a span of two months from the outbreak of the virus, we witnessed the majority of the world in lockdown. It looked like earth was literally dead. Thinking about it from one side, the news of dolphins returning to Venice and the Himalayas being visible made me happy but from another, it felt that Earth had suddenly banished everyone back to their homes. It’s like getting rusticated from school because you had drugs in your bag. Simple as that. Or is it that simple?

First things first. When we heard the news that there was an outbreak of the virus in China, how many of you were actually concerned about the people of China? Or were you only concerned when people started dying in large numbers? Or did you understand the seriousness of the pandemic only when it reached your country? That's the thing. I am not trying to accuse my readers of irresponsibility or point fingers at you. I am just saying that this is the life that we lead nowadays. ''Your interests on top of the others''. This line doesn't look like it would do that much harm. I mean, haven't you heard the air hostess in airplanes. ''Put on your oxygen mask first and then help the person next to you''. But think about this line, ''Your interests on top of others at any cost''. That sounds more damaging, doesn't it? This is exactly what people all over the world though when a report said that Trump tried to secure exclusive rights for a coronavirus vaccine under development in Germany. Of course, there are also reports that say a different story. Then, there were speculations that the virus had been engineered in a lab and has been released by China. Reports revealed by scientists later that the virus originated from anteaters later squashed those speculations.

All of these got me thinking, what are the two things that would be necessary for humans to lead a remarkable life? Well, the first thing I would say is cooperation. Of course, when I say cooperation, I don't mean that we have to cooperate with terrorists or criminals. Of course, several countries are now doing an amazing job at that diverting supplies and doctors in the direction in which it is needed which is a good thing. But the cooperation I meant was that why can't we all cooperate like this all the time? Do we actually need natural disasters to bring out the cooperative power in both individuals and countries? Of course, the coronavirus was really unexpected but even then there have been incidences of countries intimidating others for the sake of supplies. As a generic answer, we might be used to hearing policies and the economy. In my opinion, for these policies and economies to flourish, the least that you need is a world and a population and we all knew in the past few months how fragile both of them were. Similarly, with the whole world moving in the direction of sustainable development there are lots of ideas and innovations being launched into the world daily by brilliant minds. It's not much of a big deal to share them rather than implement it in the country by whose nationals it was developed. This is not an exam in which you hide your answers so that the person next to you do not copy it and get better grades than you. This is the kind of exam in which your grades are determined by the average grade in the class. So, if you are keen on getting good grades, it is your responsibility to make sure that everyone gets good grades.

The second thing which I feel is necessary is refraining yourselves from believing and spreading hoaxes. Take the case of the current pandemic situation for example. When it first started, we were told to drink hot water because it was believed that it could kill the virus. Then, we were told that coronavirus does not spread to countries with warm and humid temperatures. Did that work either? No. Then there were all these speculations that I mentioned earlier claiming that China was responsible for the outbreak of the coronavirus. The only reason why I believe China wasn't responsible is that it was scientifically proven. That's right. I am the sort of person who believes in facts and figures because I feel it is a lot safer to trust something when there is proof. Just because of the speculation, for a brief while, the internet, countries and the media turned against China. This is the reason why I mentioned earlier it was necessary to refrain from such baseless accusations. This is not just about the coronavirus, economies or countries. It is about each and everything in life. If you have a habit of believing in such hoaxes or are pulled into such conversations, today is the day to stop. But of course, it's up to you. Because in one way or the other, what you think will not affect anyone or anything in any way, will affect. And by the time you realize, it will be too late.

So, I think it's time to end and by the way, sorry for the lengthy article. We started with the issue of coronavirus but I would like to conclude on something else. We have all heard that ''one person can make a difference in this world''. I would like to modify that a little. In my opinion, I would say, ''one person can make a difference in this world but one person alone cannot make a difference in this world. What I meant to say is that you can start protecting nature in any way which might be from fixing a small leak in your bathroom or proper disposal of waste at your home to developing something that would teleport people. Whatever it is, all you have to keep in mind is that you share your methods and inspire the world to adopt them because the world has always accepted artistic ideas.

On Samyukt Kisan Morcha's call last night, asking for protests from 10am to 1pm today all over the country to press for four key demands, protests have been organised at DC/DM offices and other locations in many places. Reports have come in from Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, West Bengal and other states about these protests. There was also a silent protest march organised at Singhu Border also. Citizens who participated in these protests questioned the impunity and violence with which BJP leaders are operating, and their anti-farmer attitude and behaviour. They demanded immediate dismissal of the Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, immediate arrest of the Minister's son and his accomplices, a probe by a sitting judge of the Supreme Court, and also the resignation of Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar. Reports indicate that FIRs have been lodged against Ashish Mishra Teni and 15 others. However, no arrests have been made. SKM has appealed to all citizens to maintain peace and non-violence, as is the norm of the farmers' struggle, and asked protestors not to fall into the trap being laid by BJP to derail the movement by violence and communal politics being brought in.

There were spontaneous protests in response to the unfortunate developments in Lakhimpur Kheri from last night itself when candlelight marches and rallies were taken out in some locations like Ambala, Kurukshetra, Chandigarh and other places. In Puranpur and other locations, highways were jammed by protesting farmers. Thousands of farmers poured into Tikunia today, at the site of the violent incidents, where the bodies of the martyrs were kept, and negotiations held with the administration.

Today, an agreement was reached between SKM leaders along with local protesting farmers and families of the deceased, and the state administration, which paved the way for the final rites to be performed of the martyred farmers, after postmortem is performed. The bodies of the four farmers had been kept in an overnight vigil by hundreds of farmers and their families in Tikunia's college ground. The Government will give 45 lakh rupees each and a government job each to the families of the farmers who were killed yesterday. The injured will be given 10 lakh rupees each. FIR has been registered against Ashish Mishra Teni and 15 others under Sections 302, 120B and other charges, and the government said that it will arrest all the accused within a week. A case has been registered against Minister Ajay Mishra Teni also, under Sections like 120B. The Government has also agreed to get a retired High Court judge to probe the matter. The demand with regard to Ajay Mishra Teni's dismissal from the Union Government is pending, of course.

Eye witness accounts reveal how the murderous attack seems to be pre-planned, facilitated by the UP police. It is reported that Police removed barricades to allow the vehicles of the Minister's son, who himself was driving the Thar vehicle, to mow down protestors indiscriminately, and the farmers retaliated thereafter. The Police protected Ashish Mishra Teni in escaping from the scene, and it is reported that he fired as he escaped. The specific targeting of SKM leader Tajinder Singh Virk was narrated in eye witness accounts.

Reports through the day indicated that the Uttar Pradesh government tried numerous undemocratic ways of preventing various people going to Lakhimpur Kheri, whether it was social activists, or political leaders. Sec.144 was imposed, and internet services were suspended. UP Government went to the extent of disallowing certain people from arriving into, and leaving from particular airports, and had also written to Punjab government, asking that no person from Punjab should be allowed to enter Lakhimpur Kheri. At the time of release of this press note, reports indicate SKM leaders like Gurnam Singh Chaduni and Buta Singh Burjgill were being prevented from reaching Lakhimpur Kheri by the UP Police. In fact, it is reported that Gurnam Singh Chaduni has been arrested in Meerut. The prevention of leaders of the Opposition, including the former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and two sitting Chief Ministers (of Punjab and Chattisgarh), and disallowing the landing of a Deputy Chief Minister clearly shows that the UP Government has something to hide, and is protecting the culprits. Such draconian measures are unprecedented and raise numerous valid questions. SKM condemns all these undemocratic measures of Uttar Pradesh BJP government.

Samyukt Kisan Morcha clarifies once again that it has never approached the Supreme Court or any other Court for resolution of the core issues of the farmers' agitation - about the 3 anti-farmer central laws or MSP statutory guarantee. SKM has always believed that the three central laws which reflect the anti-farmer policy directions adopted by the Union Government have to be repealed by the government itself. Towards this, SKM has also written to the President and the Prime Minister asking for dialogue to be resumed and demands to be fulfilled. SKM did not approach the Court even on the constitutionality matter - while it is important that state government's constitutional authority over agriculture has to be restored and strengthened, it is equally important to realise that the issues with the farm laws are not just about constitutionality, or lack thereof. It is about the implications of the farm laws on farmers and the death blow to their fragile livelihoods. While the laws might have been suspended from implementation for now, SKM realises that the Stay can be lifted any day. Therefore, the movement has insisted on a full repeal of the laws. When it came to organising a Kisan Sansad at Jantar Mantar too, SKM did not have to knock on the doors of any court, and fulfilled fully the conditions with which it obtained Delhi Police's permission and cooperation for organising the same. Therefore, there is no question of the farmers' movement entering the Courts and seeking justice, and protesting at the same time. The petitioner in this case has got nothing to do with SKM. On the matter of blocking the highways, it is reported that the Supreme Court has issued notice to 43 leaders. Samyukt Kisan Morcha has always maintained that farmers did not put up any barricades or blockades on the roads. It was the Haryana, UP and Delhi Police which did so. Farmers have in fact kept the roads clear for traffic on both sides at the morcha sites. Public inconvenience if any is being caused by the police which has barricaded the highways. Farmers have also maintained that the agitation can be resolved, if the Union Government does not behave in this egoistic, adamant and unjustifiable manner. The resolution is clearly in the hands of the Modi Government which has not been able to give any convincing evidence as to why it will not repeal the anti-farmer laws, or why it will not enact a legislation for guaranteeing remunerative MSP for all produce and farmers.

Reports indicate that Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi criticised opposition political parties sharply in an interview, alleging that the opposition parties are indulging in political deceit and moral dishonesty when they oppose the farm laws. He has reportedly said that parties who promised certain reforms in their election promises and even their manifestos, have taken a u-turn later on and did not have the boldness to carry through their promises. Samyukt Kisan Morcha would like to remind the Prime Minister that these so-called "reforms" are not beneficial for farmers, irrespective of which party is proposing these. These "reforms" are meant to facilitate the business of agri-corporations at the expenses of millions of farmers in the country. Farmers did not ask for such reforms. Moreover, SKM would like to remind Mr Modi and BJP that what the farmers are demanding today is very much in line with promises made by the BJP itself, and perspectives supported by Mr Modi and BJP in the past. It was in 2011 when Mr Modi was the Chief Minister of Gujarat and as the Chairperson of a Working Group that he recommended that MSP enforcement should be mandated through statutory provisions, in the "Report of the Working Group on Consumer Affairs" of the Government of India. Further, earlier to this, it was in 2002 that the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government obtained a report of its "High Level Committee on Long Term Grain Policy" that recommended that CACP should go strictly on the basis of C2 cost of production. The Committee also recommended that MSP should have statutory status. This Committee was asked to set out principles and guidelines for long term grain policy by the then BJP government. It is also well known that Mr Narendra Modi and BJP canvassed for the party's election campaign in 2014 on the MSP plank, promising improvements for farmers. In 2018, the Modi government in fact made a commitment on the floor of the Parliament that MSP will be made a reality for all farmers. None of this materialised. It is high time that BJP looked into its own political dishonesty in making direct promises to farmers and reneging on them. More importantly, it is important that farmers demands be met in the current agitation, since the implications of not doing so are a matter of life and death of millions of anna daatas of the country.

Lessons in science journalism from veteran Dr K S Jayaraman

Dr. Killugudi S Jayaraman (born 1936) is a familiar name for several generations of scientists, policymakers and journalists in India. He is credited with founding the tradition of independent science reporting in Indian media. A qualified nuclear scientist as well as a trained journalist, Dr. Jayaraman first worked in the US but chose to return to India and worked in DRDO before joining premier news agency, the Press Trust of India (PTI) in 1973. He founded PTI Science Service, which became a trailblazer in science journalism and training ground for future budding science journalists. Dr. Jayaraman focused on investigative science reporting and got many scoops – unauthorized project on the genetic control of mosquitoes, racket in cornea transplants, illegal import of hop plants for beer making, Himalayan fossil fraud by Viswajit Gupta and so on.

As a long-time correspondent of Nature, Dr. Jayaraman played a critical role in placing Indian science on a global platform. In this interview with Dinesh C Sharma (Jawaharlal Nehru Fellow and founding Managing Editor, India Science Wire) who was trained under Dr. Jayaraman in PTI (1984-1990), Dr. Jayaraman recalls his early life and the journey in science journalism. Here are excerpts from the interview:

How did you shift from scientific research to science journalism?

I had an interest in writing from school days. While studying in the US, I had been occasionally writing science articles for The Hindu. The interest continued even after becoming a post-doc in Canada. I remember having a long phone conversation with Professor Joseph Weber – who had developed the first gravitational wave detectors at the University of Maryland where I did my Ph.D. – for a story on gravitational waves that got published in The Hindu.

While working as a post-doc in the University of Manitoba, I was sent to Chicago to present a paper at the annual meeting of the American Physical Society in 1970. There, in the Press Room, I chanced meeting the science reporter of wire service, the Associated Press, who had come to cover the meeting. His name was Charles Gene McDaniels. I found him banging his typewriter in the Press Room. I told him that I also wanted to become a science reporter like him and asked for his advice. “You are in the right place,” he told me. “About 10 miles from here is the Medill School of Journalism on the Evanston campus of Northwestern University. You can join that school, which is No.2 journalism school in the US.” I took his word seriously and took a train to Evanston the same day and met the dean of the Medill School and asked him if he would take me as his student for the one-year post-graduate (M.S.) course in journalism. “Not many have come to us after a Ph.D. in physics. Why you want to study journalism when you can report science without doing an MS,” he said. It took some effort to convince him that I wanted to learn all the tricks of the trade and fundamentals of reporting.

As part of practical training, I was also attached to a reporter of Chicago Tribune who used to take me in his car wherever he went. This gave me a chance to see how reporters work in the field. On one such round, he noticed that fire engines were missing from their usual depot. That raised a red flag: had they been called for duty? He guessed it right. There was a huge fire in the neighborhood and he was the first to report from the site. This was a great lesson in reporting: always be alert and inquisitive.

You joined the Press Trust of India (PTI) in 1973. How was it to work in a news agency as a science reporter?

Scientists and science administrators are much more open today than the days when I started reporting science in PTI. This was a big downside. For example, though G.P. Talwar at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) had in 1972 successfully experimented with his novel birth control method on rats, he would not give more details for a story without the permission of the institute director. Eventually, permission was granted and the PTI story on a potential birth vaccine for women made global news. In the presence of an invisible wall between scientists and reporters, science conferences and journals were the main source for stories. Sometimes, there was a problem here too. I remember AIIMS scientist (Dr. O.P.Ghai) who had published the harmful effects of the colors used during the Holi festival, strongly objected to PTI coverage of his published findings on the ground it scared people. The Tight-mouthed science community, coupled with the absence of official news outlets and press officers in scientific institutions, proved to be a major handicap to reporters covering science.

What were the top science stories you broke in the early days?

Some stories that come to my mind include the one on biological warfare implications of US-funded project on the genetic control of mosquitoes. Following the story, the matter was raised in the parliament and Public Accounts Committee (PAC) investigated the matter in 1975. It resulted in the closure of the project and the government’s decision to set up a task force to scrutinize proposals for all projects involving foreign collaboration. Then there was one that exposed a racket in cornea transplants in which some eye surgeons in India were making money by misusing corneas donated by the international eye bank of Sri Lanka.

I also wrote on illegal import of “hop” plants (used for beer making) infected with dangerous pests by Mallya’s brewery in Bangalore. This also led to a parliamentary inquiry and resulted in changes in the Plant Quarantine Act. Another expose related to in-patients and outpatients at AIIMS being used as guinea pigs for research. The AIIMS director Lalit Agarwal threatened to sue PTI but changed his mind when shown a photocopy of the medical record of one patient. After my reports exposing the Himalayan fossil fraud by Dr. Viswajit Gupta of Punjab University, he was dismissed. I also wrote on how a blind school in Delhi, in order to keep getting government grants, was preventing its students from getting free eye operation that would have restored their vision. Another expose that led to a parliamentary investigation by PAC was about genetically engineered mosquitoes for malaria control.

Science reporting has changed at the turn of the century with the internet, embargoed stories from scientific journals, etc. Any thoughts on this?

This has made the job of science reporters a lot easier as one can write stories from home unlike in the 1970s and the 1980s when reporters were mostly on the road or near telephones. Internet journalism, however, limits one to follow-up work done by others. It robs one the thrill of spotting a potential story and turning out an article after a lot of running around. Many story ideas come when you least expect them. Once I sighted two dead experimental rats, used syringes and cotton rolls in a dustbin outside a hospital during a walk. It forced me and a photographer friend to visit and take photos of trash sites outside many other hospitals in Delhi. We found rag pickers rummaging these places to recover reusable articles. The resulting story, headlined “How hospitals spread diseases”, highlighted the pitiable state of waste disposal and prompted authorities to set up incinerators in hospital premises.

You have also been instrumental in presenting Indian science to international audiences through your reportage for the Nature group of journals. When did this association begin?

It started in 1981 when Nature editor Sir John Maddox asked me if I could write about science and technology developments in India and subsequently I became its contributing correspondent. In 1998, Nature desired to bring out an India supplement. This resulted in “News India”, a quarterly publication, with myself as its editor. This publication was stopped in 2008 when Nature launched the online version. My long association during which Nature and its sister journals covered important S&T developments in India, now continues on-and-off.

How would you describe the present state of science journalism in India?

Thanks to the new generation of over-active science reporters, the coverage of Indian science by the media today has grown leaps and bounds. It is also a pleasure to note that many of those responsible for this growth had earlier been associated with PTI science service. Future is extremely bright for four reasons: (1) Increasing number of talented graduates and post-graduates in science and engineering are embracing this profession — a trend that will improve the quality and domain of reporting; (2) government science agencies, in their own ways, are promoting science communication; (3) major newspapers are giving more space to science-related stories; and (4) thanks to the digital age, scientists who used to be reticent in the past, are racing to become vocal and visible like never before.
