Okay, you know what, let's look at the situation at hand for a sec

Nightbringer spoilers for up to lesson 14!!

So the Celestial War ended not too long ago, the brothers just fell from grace. The Demon King accepts them into the Devildom (Diavolo might have been the one to take them in, but ultimately it was still the Demon King that gave them their titles and therefore allowed them to stay) which strains the already fragile relationship between the two realms even further. Lucifer also mentions that, should the Celestial Realm ever find out that Diavolo directly interferred with their judgement and let Lilith be reborn as human, war would be inevitable

We've also seen the way the Devildom's denizens treated the brothers--hostile, unwelcoming and demeaning, all because they're fallen angels (or associated with fallen angels in Satan's case). There's also the House of Lords, clearly wanting to get rid of the brothers as well

The entire situation gets a little better over time but it's still incredibly unstable. Probably the only way to destabilize the Devildom even further would be by forcing a change in power

And then the Demon King falls asleep, and just like that, Diavolo is thrust into a position of power

And while Diavolo does his best to shoulder his new responsibility and he has Barbatos to support him, it's obvious he's completely overwhelmed by it all--and he also makes an easy target. The House of Lords literally jumps at the first opportunity to challenge Diavolo's authority. We can only guess what would have happened if Diavolo failed the Kingsblood Crucible

And speaking of the trials, during them Diavolo mentions how demons got to rule--how a demon tricked the Fairy King into drinking his blood, which put the Fairy King into a deep sleep he has yet to awake from, and leaving the land to be ruled by the demons. Which sounds kind of familiar in a way, doesn't it?

Makes you wonder if it's all part of a bigger plan and someone's pulling the strings in the background...
