Chapter One

A TZzzzzttt of Class

Eskom remains South Africa's sole electricity provider; which under the Competition Act of 20... is unlawful. However, no competitors have ever challenged the status quo. Until now.

So, how Eskom-provided electricity works is as follows:

♧ There is a large nuclear or other power station or power plant, within a large city's inner sanctum. This power station sometimes services multiple cities and towns, even a whole province.

♧ From this central power station, power is transported via thick, copper cable lines all the way to a town's sub-station (which is often unmanned and is not the power plants of the cities).

♧ Another sub-station can be found in a central location within residential areas or 'the suburbs'.

♧ The last sub-station between the power plant and the home or business in which it is made use of, is the street power box; which is usually found on a corner and has no fenced off boundaries. From this box, the electricity is sent to the home or business' electricity power box. This, in the circuitry of Eskom-provided electricity, would be a switch or circuit-breaker; albeit, only when it is switched off. However, because these parts of the circuit, up to the power station have no switches, unlimited power can be siphoned off the grid.

Single Phase Power - This is electricity meant for home use. Eskom supplies home consumers with single phase electricity. Small firms (with 5 office  employees in total) and even massive skyscraper-housed firms (with 2300 office employees) would both be using single phase power. This means that the surge of power in wattage is limited and can also be identified by a certain thickness of copper cabling needed to carry or conduct or "move" a constant stream of electricity.

Three Phase Power - This is the kind of electricity consumer you would be, if you had a wood workshop, for example, in which you used multiple power tools as well as the usual office and kitchen equipment. Often, when one wants to open a business; either at home or at a bought or leased premises, one would have to enquire whether the zoning of that erf is residential or three phase. If residential, one would have to first put an ad in the local newspaper announcing your intention to make an application to change the zoning. You would have to host a meeting at a venue at which any stakeholders could come and voice their agreement or concerns with your proposed application. Unfortunately, if you have even just one person in disagreement, you will not be permitted to continue the application; which is lodged at your nearest Civic Centre.

The reason for this; perhaps not obvious at the time; is that three phase power costs about 6 times more per unit than residential or one phase electricity; and even if the rest of your street does not need three phase power, they end up paying for it. This is because the power box on your corner, that services the whole street needs to be upgraded to three phase. Probably, for that reason, you have to hand deliver notices of your intention to lodge an application; as well as a notice and details of your meeting, regarding the proposed re-zoning of that street; at every house number in that street.

Once the zoning is three phase, it is difficult to get it re-zoned back to residential; if not impossible; probably due to the infrastructure and street box upgrade because three phase power requires thicker copper cables; all the way to your power box. And all the way back to Eskom or your local Power Plant.

The benefit to installing three phase power is that electricity doesn't trip and heavy machinery and devices can be used; with abandon; and without a weak electrical power source that is not equipped to handle such a high rate of power consumerage.

Quite often, people living in the suburbs, never check the municipal zoning of their street and as a result, end up buying/renting a house that is zoned under a three phase electricity supply or semi-industrial zoning. This can significantly lower your home, the street and the suburb's real estate value. Non-consumers of three phase have been known to be crippled, financially, by the rate charged for the unnecessary cost of an oversupply of Eskom's three phase electricity.

Other types of businesses that make use of three phase power are:

◇ Laundrettes

◇ Specialist medical facilities

◇ Metal Workshops

◇ Small Factories

◇ Food Processing outfits that need freezing and refrigeration

◇ Auto repair shops

◇ Scrapyards

◇ Lodges and spas

◇ Showrooms

Wherever a lot of copper wiring is found in a machine, device or tool, it's a good indication that the devicemakes use of large quantities of electricity. The less copper, the cheaper it is to run; electricity-wise.

Any item, which has a heating element or a cooling fan, is also, more likely than not, consuming a lot of electricity. Any items that vibrate, rotate, oscillate or provide a force of motion (like electric scooters) or hairdryers also consume a substantial amount of power as opposed to manual or semi-manual (for example, with batteries) devices.

Tumble-dryers, heaters, electric blankets, hair irons, ovens and lawnmowers as well as air-conditioners are all high energy consuming appliances that DO trip residential zone power boxes; when used with too many plug points in use, simultaneously. Electric gates, water pumps used for water features, Jacuzzis and swimming pools are also high consumers of electricity.

What do you have the male/male cables in the lab for?

a method of electron microscopy we do in the lab is called STM, or scanning tunneling microscope. STMs involve electrons quantum tunneling between an atomically sharp tip and a sample of interest. The flow of hopping electrons, ie the magnitude of the tunneling current, is later interpreted as an atomic image. This is a useful technique for understanding the surface structure and electrical properties of materials.

thats all fine and dandy but to get true atomic resolution, you need an insanely sharp tip since you want the electrons to tunnel around as small of a point as possible. Theres a number of ways to do this, however one of the methods we used for a long time was well........We'd have some very fine tungsten wire. we hook the wire up to one end of the widow maker (ie the male/male cable) that's plugged into an AC power supply, and hook the other end around a little gold hoop...and then they both get submerged into KOH, which is highly corrosive and has a ph anywhere from 10-13. we let them sit in the corrosive base for a small period of time until the base and the AC current cause the tungsten wire to etch away and eventually break off at the surface, which generates a very fine, precise tip point that can be used for imaging.

so dont worry folks, not only am i working with male/male cables that are open and supplied with an active AC current, we're also putting that current through a liquid corrosive enough to immediately burn your skin on contact.

Бокс и железо. Раньше я часто слышал о том, что тренажёрный зал и всё что с ним связано - это «табу» для боксёра. Ещё в старших классах школы мне говорили о том, что тренировки с железом делают спортсменов-ударников медленными и неповоротливыми. И это верно, если человек большую часть времени тратит на железо, либо если делает это без осознанного подхода - просто когда захочется. С течением времени как по своему опыту, так и глядя на других спортсменов, я начал понимать что тренажёры, штанга и гантели - отличное средство для того, чтобы добиться необходимой мощи и силовых показателей. Важно понимать, что работа с железом боксёров отличается от тренировок бодибилдеров. Здесь нужно выполнять все упражнения со взрывом (как жимы, так и тяги). Само собой, веса должны быть ниже максимальных на 30 - 40%, чтобы можно было обеспечить нужную нагрузку и при этом контролировать свои движения. Кроме того, важна системность. Будь то план на неделю либо месячный тренировочный цикл - всё должно быть продуманно и взаимосвязанно. Нельзя забывать, что мы применяем железо для лучших результатов именно в боксе, и здесь должна быть чётко выстроенная стратегия. Обязательно должны быть фазы разгрузки и отдыха. Также в конце каждой силовой тренировки обязательно нужно растянуть и постараться расслабить мышцы - так они восстановятся гораздо быстрее и снизится боль в мышцах на следующий день. В далёком прошлом я пренебрегал растяжкой - не хотелось тратить на неё время. Но однажды я всё-таки заставил себя растягиваться после каждой тренировки, и очень пожалел что не делал этого ранее - боль в мышцах на второй день после нагрузки практически пропала, появилось больше сил для следующей тренировки, да и в целом результаты стали расти быстрее. Не стоит бояться работы с железом - этот стереотип появился из-за множества неудачных попыток - а их, как правило, гораздо больше чем тех, что приводят к успеху. Забитые руки и ноги, зажатость, «деревянный» корпус - это лишь результат хаотичных тренировок наобум. You didn't notice it at first. The doors that were left open after you closed them, your phone that was never right where you left it, how your sink would run without you turning it on. The stress of school and work was always to much for you to notice.

But why shuld you notice? The fact that you didn't have to open doors when stressing about not finding your phone and wondering why and when you tuned the tap on. But it was never enough for you to start questioning it.

But slowly as school started stressing less, you started to slowly notice things little by little.

You strated to notice how the clothes you had put away the night before, was still folded on the chair in the livingroom. You started to notice how your chargers always got unplugged when you returned to your devices. And you noticed how the wind went though your house in a way that made it sound like someone was whistling around in you home. Someone that wasn't you, someone you didn't know, someone that made you feel threatened in your own home.

When your power was cut, you thought it was a mistake. Because you were sure you had paid the bills. Had you paid the bills?

"Shuld of paid your bills"

You frose. Who said that? you looked aroud finding nothing but your oh so familiar furniture. Were you imagining it all? Was the stress from school and work to much for your brain to function? Whatever, you thought.

You looked though your messages and yeah, you did pay your bills. So why was your power off? You decided to find the powerbox, but made sure to walk with caution. Because since the landlord wasn't the one to cut your power. someone else had to do it through the only other box, the box inside your home.

You weren't quite sure where the powerbox was, since you only moved in recently. Looking around corners and doors to make sure there was no one standing there. But even though you culdn't see anyone, you still felt the pressens of someone else in the room with you.

"Who are we looking for?"

You screamed LOUD. Turning left and right trying to find the person talking. "Whos there?!" finding no one only made your heart beat faster.

"What are you screaming for?!" screamed a voice back to you.

Turning around, you saw the person talking. It was a guy with short pink hair. Looked pale, almost too pale, like he was really really sick. "Who are you?" You asked, slowly moving away from the man. "I'm Sunoo!" He answerd with a big smile. "Why are you in my house, Sunoo?" Still backing away, you tried to find a way out of the room. "I live here silly!" His smile started to turn a bit eerie. "I have to live here in order to stay on earth, if not then they'll send me back". "Back where?". "Heaven" He said with a shrug.

What? Why was there a man in your house, and why did he say he came from heaven? "What do you mean your from heaven?". "Don't you get it? I'm dead you idiot, I have to haunt for a living". Haunt? So was he the one that moved stuff and made lfe just a bit less liveble?

"Are you the one messing with my stuff?". He started laughing. "WHO else?" He answerd, still laughing. "But what are you looking for enyway? You've been walking around in this house looking around corners for ages" He said, rolling his eyes. "I've been looking for the powerbox YOU turned off" You said, starting to look for the box again. "Oh yeah that. Wait a moment yeah?" He said, waking through a wall.

The power turned back on only a few moments after he had dissapeared. "In the livingroom!". Walking to the living room , you found Sunoo sitting in your couch. "Can we talk about this?" sitting down on the other end of the couch. "About what?", " About the fact that your 'haunting' my home?" "Yeah yeah sure ask away"

After talking to sunoo for a wile, you realised that you had more in comon than not. And even though 'finding out your house was haunted' wasn't on your list of things you were scared of when movin into the big city. It didn't seam too bad, atleast yout did have a friend to talk with when you were alone now.

It wasn't perfect, but it made city life a tad bit better.

Regarding Yesterday

Yesterday, at around 1:30 PM [October 11th]- an employee of ours got electrocuted- rough estimate by on-site medics suggest 235 volts, from the forearm to the chest.

It occurred in Lab 2-B, as the powerbox stationed there was acting up. We've been reporting electrical disturbances for over a week now due to our attempt to adjust our energy consumption at the request of the Amity Park Eco Administration (APEA). As a result, energy surges have been unpredictable- yet we never thought it would become this much of a hazard.

Any ectoplasmic or ectobiological experiments carried out in Lab 2-B shall be transferred to a temporary testing room until further notice. Lab 2-B will be inaccessible to everybody.

We are still limiting news coverage, as the victim of the accident requests to remain anonymous while they recover. Its a miracle they're even alive.

We are still not allowing Vladco employees to speak to anyone wearing a 2-piece white suit. We will not cooperate with them. They have no business being here. Do not let them ask you questions, do not ask THEM any questions, do not even acknowledge they exist. As a US citizen you have the right to remain silent. Vladco is depending on you to stay silent.

The Bring Your Daughter to Work day is not canceled, however- the event will be carried out differently in order to prevent any future accidents.

Cocoon Nebula - IC 5146 Located in Cygnus, the IC 5146 is a reflection and emission nebula. I finally decided to put everything together on the Celestron EdgeHD 8 for deep space and do some testing to make sure my guiding worked and that I could reach focus. Guiding was the easy part, focus was the pain. I finally got it and on the first night I captured m27 amd NGC 869, those I will post soon. On night two, I decided to shoot the Cocoon on both my Edge as well as my Meade 80mm Triplet. This here is from the Edge, and though I had some focus drift in the middle of my imaging (can't seem to get the auto focus to do its thing when using my Canon), I am happy with the result, especially considering I did not use any filters. .
