Amphibia - Vacation Part 3: Rainforest

Anne wiped the sweat from her brow. It wasn’t especially hot, but the humidity was oppressive, and there was so much moisture in the air that she felt like she was swimming.

They were north of Cairns today, walking through the rainforest at a place called Mossman Gorge. They had stopped by a shallow creek, just down from some rapids - Sasha was taking a moment to wade in the water, leaving her friends waiting on the rocks at the shore. It was a beautiful spot - the water was an aqua, almost emerald green, and the trees seemed to reach the sky itself. She could see lizards swimming beneath the waters, and hear the calls of tropical birds.

She turned to Marcy. She was looking at the trees, taking in their twisted shapes and leafy canopies and scribbling in her journal. She looked up at Anne and smiled, a large bead of sweat dropping from her hair.

“Did you know some of these trees are hundreds of years old?” she asked.

“Yeah?” Anne replied.

“Yeah!” Marcy waved her arms around. “This is one of the oldest ecosystems in the world! This whole rainforest is about a hundred sixty million years old!”

She stood up, walking over to a grizzled old tree trunk and touching it with her hand.

“Humans have only been here sixty thousand years,” she said. “The whole of human habitation in Australia would have to repeat 2500 times to have been around that long.”

“You do that math yourself?” Anne smiled. “Just in your head?”

Marcy blushed, rubbing the back of her head.

“I worked it out in my journal,” she replied.

She sat back down on the rock, looking up at the sky.

“Imagine living a hundred sixty million years,” she mused.

She closed her eyes, listening to the birdsong.

“You’d see so much,” she said. “Civilizations rising and falling; new creatures evolving and going extinct. You’d see landmasses moving and climates changing and…”

“...and you’d have to watch everyone you know die,” said Anne. “That’s a pretty big downside. And after millions of years, would you still remember them?”

“I’m kind of assuming the immortality comes with super memory,” Marcy chuckled.

Anne snorted, sitting down next to Marcy.

“It sounds lonely,” she says. “I mean, unless you had someone to share it with, and they weren’t a jerk or something.”

She kicked a rock into the stream, listening to it splash.

“Like, millions of years alone with Mayor Toadstool,” she suggested.

“Or Duckweed.”

“Jeesh!” Anne scoffed. “Hmm… millions of years with Mr. X?”

“I mean, at least he has a fashion sense?” Marcy shrugged. “I got one - millions of years with Maggie.”

Anne cringed.

“No,” she said, shaking her head. “Just no.”

She felt something against her hand, and her gaze shot down. Marcy had placed her palm on top of hers; Anne looked up and found herself looking into Marcy’s eyes.

“How about millions of years with me?” she asked.

Anne felt her cheeks flush, and she grinned.

“You flirting with me, Marbles?” she asked.

“I just wanna know,” said Marcy, her face turning red. She was leaning in, and Anne found herself moving in kind.

“Forever with you?” she replied. “I can get with that.”

She closed her eyes. They leaned in forward, the sound of rushing water and birds fading into background ambience, and-

“Hey Marcy! Is this a platypus?”

Anne jumped, her eyes opening. Sasha was standing in the shallow water, pointing at a dark shape a short distance away. The two girls blushed, avoiding eye contact as Marcy got up to take a closer look.

Anne leaned back on the rock, wiping sweat from her forehead. She smiled, despite everything.

“Next time, Anne,” she whispered. “Next time.”

She turned to watch her friends.

“...Sasha, I think that’s a stick.”
