Plant of the Day
Thursday 18 April 2024
In the shelter of a Polycrub I really enjoy growing tulips as a cut flower. The star at the moment is Tulipa 'Rasta Parrot' (tulip) which provides an explosion of colour with twisted, curling petals, of irregular shape and in unusual patterns.

Wow, it’s been a long day …
We’ve been working hard, and have finally managed to get all the raised beds placed in the Polycrub. With a short break for lunch ( I made a vegetable curry with some of our green tomatoes. Yum 😋), we headed back out.
Alongside the raised beds, we cleared out the old grow bags, did a spot of weeding and harvested the rest of our leeks.
It’s been a very satisfying day, but boy does my back ache. 😅
Time to head in … a mug of coffee and a toasted sandwich sound really good right now. 👍

Cut flowers
Tumblr media
I think of all the interests Chris has had (and he has had many), this is my favourite, running closely with the allotment. He started growing cut flowers a few years ago, and we now always have an enormous patch of self seeded corncockle and this year some calendula too and fox gloves. We also grow lavender and some daisies, which come every year and this year have cosmos, carnations and…

Plant of the Day
Saturday 2 March 2024
A member of the brassica family Brassica rapa var. nipposinica (mizuna, Asian greens, Japanese mustard greens, California pepper grass, spider mustard) can grow with protection through the winter. The feathery leaves have a mild mustard flavour which are sweet enough for salads and older leaves can be cooked like spinach. This biennial plant was in its second year and so was producing flowers.

Spotted this amazing blue-black tomato variety in a Polycrub tunnel on the island of Hoy, Orkney. Solanum lycopersicum 'Indigo Rose' (blue tomato) contains high levels of Anthocyanin and Lycopene - two key antioxidants.

Excited for our own salad and herbs and grateful for the foraged chickweed, bittercress and primrose flowers while our lettuces are still very small!

It’s been so nice to potter around in the garden again and enjoy the warmth of the sun. With the lighter evenings, we’re able to work late and things are moving fast.
Our plants : leeks, lettuce, cabbage, tomatoes, peppers, green beans, broad beans, courgette, asparagus and pumpkins are all doing really well in the Polycrub … and the raised beds have been a godsend for my back. 🙏
We still have 3 or 4 more boxes to make for the Polycrub, and then we’ll move onto making boxes for the garden. Raised bed gardening is definitely my go to … 👍 🌱
Anyway, hope you’re having a good weekend too … 😊👋
