Brand New Moves
by tawaen
T, 7k, Wangxian
Summary: In the most ambitious heist ever planned, Team Rocket attempts to steal two legendary Pokémon – one from the Burial Mounds Gym Leader, Wei Ying; and one from the Snow White Pavilion Gym Leader, Lan Zhan. These two former rivals are paired up to battle against one another for the first time since becoming Gym Leaders! Will they be able to defeat Team Rocket? Or will they loose their composure and their Pokémon? (Just joking, Wei Ying and Lan Zhan never even notice Team Rocket. They only have eyes for each other!) Kay's comments: It's been a hot minute since I last consumed any Pokémon content, but you don't have to be very knowledgeable to get the gist of this fic. Rivals fem Wangxian meet again after years apart to battle, now both as gym trainers and it goes differently than expected. Really loved the slow clearing of the past misunderstandings between them and of course the Wen-Wei found family vibes. And Wei Ying the MILF. Excerpt: “Wei Ying,” Lan Zhan breathes out raggedly. She comes up to the top landing, but doesn't get any closer. “Can you tell me what I did wrong?” Wei Ying tries to keep her voice even, “You didn't do anything wrong.” She doesn't succeed. Her voice breaks as she says that. “You forfeit the match. You are crying. Please, what can I do?” Lan Zhan keeps her voice soft. Before today, they have not spoken in almost four years. Wei Ying has never heard her be so gentle. She clearly will not leave until she knows Wei Ying is fine. So Wei Ying just needs to convince her of that, somehow. “You really didn't do anything wrong. I just wasn't expecting to see Froslass again. I swear, I just need a moment. Then I'll be fine.” Lan Zhan sucks in a breath, “I traded to get Froslass because the other person told me you were the original trainer.” “I'm glad she's with you. That's... I really am happy. I'm just surprised.” Wei Ying sternly tells herself that she is happy. This is what she originally wanted.
pov wei wuxian, modern setting, modern with magic, pokemon fusion, female lan wangji/female wei wuxian, rivals to lovers, misunderstandings, madam yu's a+ parenting, dysfunctional jiang family, jiang family dynamics, pokemon gym leaders, pokemon gym leader lan wangji, pokemon gym leader wei wuxian, love confessions, emotional hurt/comfort, families of choice, burial mounds ensemble as family, single parent wei wuxian

Hello and welcome to Day 5 of "Let's Explore My Plot Bunnies"
Tumblr media
Do you know that moment when you hear an opening from a childhood TV show that you were obsessed with before and your brain is like, "But what if you combine this with this and make it into a fanfic idea?". Cause this is how my brain came up with a Mo Dao Zu Shi Pokemon AU. (The Diamond and Pearl Openings are still my jam to this day)
The AU is not fully detailed in my head (yet), but I came up with two versions for it, so I will just write down some details I already have for both versions:
Ver.1
Edit: As of February 6th, this has a title : "Some roads are not meant to be traveled alone"
Wei Wuxian is a new Pokemon Trainer that just started his journey with his partner Vulpix (Kantonian)
Lan Wangji is a more seasoned Pokemon Trainer (he has been on a journey for at least 2 years) and has an Alolan Vulpix as a partner.
The two meet in Kalos, more specifically in Lumiouse City. WWX wanted to see if he could start challenging the Gyms right away, and his Vulpix got a bit too excited and ran off and got lost.
Lan Wangji is in Lumiouse City for a vacation rather than to start a new journey. His Vulpix is the one that finds WWX's Vulpix. Seeing that the Kantonian Vulpix is very young, LWJ feels anger towards the trainer who let the young fox unattended.
When WWX finds them, LWJ is ready to berate him for being irresponsible, but WWX's "Please never run off again like that Vulpix. I was so scared." stops him in his tracks.
WWX turns to thank LWJ for finding his Vulpix and apologizes for the troubles. LWJ, instead of just accepting the apology, tells WWX he shouldn't be so careless, especially when his Vulpix is so young. (LWJ is kicking himself for saying that) WWX takes offense because he wasn't being careless, nor was he abusive towards his partner.
And so their first meeting is kind of a disaster. That, however, doesn't stop them from constantly meeting around Lumiouse for the next week and then the universe (aka me) decides they should journey around Kalos together. (We all know how the relationship will progress)
Ver.2:
Edit: As of February 6th, this fic has a title:
"Life is a journey you must walk to behold"
In this version, WWX is from Hoenn (Hoenn has a lot of water = Lotus Pier). He and Jiang Cheng have been journeying through other regions (started in Hoenn, went to Kanto and Unova) but this year they want to have an individual journey for themselves.
Jiang Cheng wants to go to Johto, while WWX is going to Sinnoh.
I am on my "Give Jiang Cheng a Shinx" Agenda because just imagine him having a Shinx that is as much of a trouble maker as WWX. (Jiang Cheng's sanity is in danger)
WWX has an Absol as his partner. (The similarities between Absol's lore and WWX's personality make me believe that this is a good pair.) Also, Absol is definitely the one that is more serious and responsible between the two.
Lan Wangji and Lan Xichen are from Johto and their family is well known for being Coordinators.
Lan Wangji has an Eevee that evolved into Glaceon as a partner and has participated in a lot of Pokemon Contests in Johto and Kanto.
Lan Xichen has a Lapras as a partner and is not as interested in Pokemon Contests. He does, however, like to nurse Pokemon back to health and thinks about becoming a Pokemon Doctor.
LWJ wants to go and journey around Sinnoh and learn more about Pokemon Battles (the Lan family doesn't like how trainers that challenge Gyms push their Pokemon so hard, and they are more against Pokemon Battles. In their words, "Contests are a more refined art. Pokemon Battles are barbaric and violent.") LWJ doesn't want to jump to conclusions on that topic, while LXC believes both can be just as good, but it depends if the Trainer is a good person or not.
LWJ, once in Sinnoh, wants to experience a Gym Challenge for himself, so he decides to go to Oreburgh City and challenge Roark, the Gym Leader.
He ends up watching a battle between Roark and WWX instead and falls at first sight for WWX and for his passion for Pokemon Battles. WWX is also very kind to his pokemon, so inner LWJ aproves even more of his choice in love interests.
WWX and LWJ end up traveling through Sinnoh together. (Team Galactic is the main villain that they seem to find/fight against all throughout the journey too)
On the other hand, LXC meets Jiang Cheng and decide to travel together through Jotho, with LXC using this journey to further his knowledge as a Pokemon Doctor and to learn more about Jiang Cheng, who, although says harsh things all the time, is a kind person.
LXC and Jiang Chen end up dealing with Team Rocket during their journey.
There you have it.
This is about everything that I have about this AU. Honestly, I think this one will probably continue to grow in the back of my mind for a while longer before I come up with a title for it and, possibly, even scenes (be it Battles or Contest Performances).
So, what do you think? Good? Bad? Let me know!
I might post some more things later today, but for the moment, I am gonna wish you guys a good morning/day/night.
Till next time,

Pokémon headcanons pls
thank you... here's a smattering of them:
Lan Xichen is, technically, the Dragon gym leader, but he has a lot of free time because Wangji steamrolls most gym challengers before they ever get to him. As a result, he volunteers at the pokemon daycare/nursery next door most of the time - hence the cute pokemon breeder overalls outfit (made for me, specifically). I really enjoy the mental image of a particularly good challenger managing to eventually defeat LWJ (say, a Wei Wuxian maybe?) so we have LXC rushing in from the side door, armful of baby pokemon squealing at him before he hands them over to Wangji and proceeds to put on his Trademark Gym Leader Longcoat or something equally cool looking. Gap moe.
Btw, the twin jades have twin dragonairs named Shuoyue and Bichen (we will not be referencing the incense burner extra in this AU).
NMJ is the steel gym leader, signature pokemon being Steelix and Honedge, of course. Huaisang is a PokeFan who only cares for bird pokemon and has no interest in taking up the mantle. He is also a streamer and a vlogger, he does the commentary for gym battles to make himself useful in ways that do not require battling. Once he asked LXC to breed a swablu for him, LXC just said "no :)" and he's still sulking about it.
Meng Yao started his adventure late, because he had no pokemon of his own until he found a Ditto in a trashcan. Later on, he adopts a Cubone because they're thematically perfect for each other. He also probably attracts a few very suspicious fox pokemon over the course of his journey. At some point he convinced JGS to hire him with the promise he'll bring him a Legendary, probably. (This absolutey cannot end well.) JGS is pretty much the Giovanni of this AU, while publicly he sponsors the Elite Four etc.
Wei Wuxian is a ghost pokemon expert, but he also likes doing infuriating tricks like the Magikarp sweep. Jiang Cheng thinks that's not "real battling" but keeps coming back for more. They're definitely racing to see who becomes Champion first.

Prompt 32: Pokemon AU
Jiang Yanli has been murdered for witnessing what she shouldn’t have, and the Twin Prides of Yunmeng vowed to bring the culprits to Justice. _________ Or, where Jiang Wanyin is Yunmeng’s new Gym Leader officially while trying to cover for his brother to the best of his abilities. Wei Wuxian used to be a well known, promising trainer, well on his way to the League, but is now deep in Wen Ruohan’s pocket (and intending to take the Rocket Team from the inside out). And Lan Wangji, his rival, is now a certified Dragon Trainer, and a member of the prestigious Elite 4. And after his bounty according to rumours. (If only he could stop meddling in their affairs!)

It’s Yunmeng’s Gym Leader, Jiang Cheng! (”You are challenged by....” template from Asmaee)
I started thinking ab Yunmeng Sibs pokemon teams in this post, and I could not stop!
In this au, the sects are towns/gyms. Yunmeng’s big with a lot of rivers and swamps, so the Yunmeng gym leader has historically also been in charge of the Yunmeng Rescue Ops. They’re kind of function like pokemon rangers but without capture stylists.
I watch competitive pokemon matches but am by no means an expert or strategist lol. ive put my thoughts on his team comp below the read more as well as some au thoughts
so he’s the master of 3 poisons so you fucking know he’s spamming toxic baybee!
Dragalge/Shore-lene
He got Shore-lene while on the gym circuit! She was the second pokemon he caught, and he found her near the shoreline so “shore-lene” like “Marlene.” It was originally spelled “Shoreline” but he got tired of correcting people.
He sets up toxic spikes w Shore-lene, and if they’re cleared or he doesn’t end up doing it, his other poke’s can use toxic. Shore-lene has flip turn in case she needs to get out and scald to help deal with steel types.
Scolipede/Scuttles
He got Scuttles from his mum when he was a kid, after he got Growlithe/Love, Eevee/Jasmine Totodile/Princess. Growlithe was sent away when WWX came, and Princess uhhh died later on. So Scuttles is very precious to him. Before she evolved, he would hold her up to people like “isn’t she so cute?!”
Scuttles is meant to be a hard hitter, and I was thinking of putting swords dance on him so he’d have more sweep potential, but I thought the type coverage granted by earthquake would be better idk.
Crobat/Sandu
Sandu was the first pokemon Jiang Cheng caught! He loves her dearly and as a kid, would secretly dote on her (as well as his other pokemon). He dotes on them more openly now that he’s Gym/Rescue Ops leader and has gone to therapy. She liked to just sit on his head when she was smaller but it’s much less feasible now.
Sandu’s super fang helps deal with steel types and other not great type matchups, and she can do some noice hits with acrobatics after her berry’s eaten. Toxic bc of course I had to put toxic on sandu and u-turn to get out of dodge.
Umbreon/Jasmine
It’s tradition in the Jiang family to give every kid an Eevee when they turn 5, and this was Jiang Cheng’s first pokemon! He’s very cat-like in personality, and JC complains about him all the time but always gives him treats and belly rubs.
Jasmine’s a wall/staller w/ wish and substitute as well as someone to deal with psychic types. If toxic spikes is still set up, then he can just vibe while the opponent loses health to bad poison. If not, he can use toxic.
Espeon/Suibian
As you can guess, Suibian was originally Wei Wuxian’s eevee. After WWX disappeared and came back with a god(?) and some very scary ghost pokemon, he stopped using Suibian, and JC started taking care of her, even though she wasn’t on his team in a formal capacity. After WWX disappeared again, and it didn’t seem like he was coming back, JC added her to his team, and she evolved under his care.
Suibian can set up reflect for some extra defense as well as deal with psychic types with shadow ball. She’s a heavy hitter, esp if she can get some calm minds off.
Gyrados/Sunshine
It’s Sunshine! Jiang Cheng won her in a festival when he was like 8 and was very adamant about keeping her, despite his parents being pretty judgemental. After a lot of hard work and determination, she evolved and is ready to wreck shop!
Sunshine has that moxie/dragon dance combo for sweeping as well as a lum berry to get rid of status conditions but esp burns/paralysis. Pretty straightforward.

So, whilst I wait for some inspiration to hit me, I will keep working on my Pokemon AU :D
This time I am going to delve into the Lan clan.
Under cut!!!
THE LAN CLAN
The Lan Clan specializes in Ice/Dragon Pokèmon.
The current Gym Leader is Lan Xichen, whilst Lan Qiren is a Pokèmon Professor who holds lessons for young trainers at the Gusu Lan Pokèmon Academy.
Lan Wangji, Xichen's brother, is a prodigy among trainers. He will fall in love with Wei Wuxian
They have a very strict and long series of rules if you want to compete with them, but despite having a range of Pokèmon that could actually put anyone in trouble, they are a pretty peaceful clan.
After the Wen clan attacks them, they manage to salvage most of the Pokèmon thanks to the help of Meng Yao, one of Jin Guangshan's bastard children.
I should mention that this is a "everyone lives except those who deserve to die and those I need dead/disappeared for plot convenience" AU.
The Lan clan will be reestablished after the Wen clan is defeated.
Each of the Lans have their own team, as they were encouraged to create one of their own as long as they stuck to mainly Ice/Dragon types
Lan Qiren has an Altaria as companion.
As for LWJ and LXC, they have the below.
Lan Xichen:
Articuno
Ninetails (Alolan form)
Dragonite
Delibird
Latias
Glaceon
Lan Wangji
Dratini (evolving then in Dragonair)
Azumarill (rabbits, k?)
Latios
Froslass (Ice/Ghost type cos Ghost types are Wei Ying's types)
Frosmoth
Lapras
The Lan Juniors are still encouraged to have Ice/Dragon types, but it is quite difficult because a lot of them are legendary Pokèmon and you need to have extra skills, so they get to have more varied teams.
Lan Sizhui in particular, on behalf of him being technically a Wen, is allowed one (1) Fire Pokèmon.
So we have below teams.
Lan Sizhui
Vulpix (the Fire type)
Dewgong (evolved from Seel)
Spheal
Amaura
Vanillite
Sylveon (he was expecting a Vaporeon or a Glaceon, but he loved the Eevee so much that it turned into Sylveon and he was hyper happy anyway)
Lan Jingyi
Glalie
Goomy (he wanted to find a Dratini like Hanguang-jun, but he caught this one instead)
Swinub (a case of Too Many Berries)
Wingull
Snom
Cloyster

Look I know it's 4am but hear me out – MDZS meets OG Pokemon
Wei Wuxian as a 10yo Ash/Red
Late to the PokeCenter on his first day of becoming a trainer because he overslept, ends up with a grumpy, erratic, super powerful Pikachu he names Suibian because, you know, whatever
Lan Wangji as Gary/Blue from a prominent Pokemon family who you know got up at the ass-crack of dawn to meet his uncle, Professor Lan Qiren
He gets a cool-ass Squirtle he calls Bichen
They size each other up, Lan Wangji is totally not impressed and heads off with his cheering squad of Hanguang-fans
Lan Wangji winning all his battles with his Pokedex-textbook learned information and efficient attacks! Fully grown adults nodding at him like Ah yes, truly Professor Qiren's nephew, such a distinguished Pokemon heritage
Wei Wuxian winning all his battles with a mixture of quick thinking, trial-and-error and pure optimism!
Lan Wangji totally furious that this works! Slowly learning that raising and battling Pokemon is not all about stats and figures, and learning how to bend the rules!
Each of the five sects as a Pokemon gym - Lan Xichen with his flying and ice types, Jiang Yanli with her water types, Nie Mingjue with his fighting and rock types, Wen Qing with her normal types (the last Wen leader used to be a fire type guy so the gym is still all red and in an active volcano but the most annoying thing about Wen Qing’s Pokemon is that they can all heal themselves), and Jin Guangyao with his psychic and poison types (it used to be Jin Zixuan but he left it to his brother after he starts dating Jiang Yanli and moves to Lotus Pier, obviously)
WWX and LWJ get stranded in an island cave at some point and they have to get onto the back of Bichen (evolved into a Blastoise presumably, although also hilarious if he's still tiny) so he can swim out. Nothing says romance like huddling together on a giant tortoise!
They face each other so many times and Lan Wangji always wins until it's eventually in the Pokemon Championships and Wei Wuxian wins and Lan Wangji is like You taught me the power of love through Pokemon battles and Wei Wuxian is like ?? ??? ??
Somewhere along the way they realise the real opponent is not each other, but the creepy organised crime boss lurking in the shadows petting his Persian, who turns out to be Jin Guangyao, the gym leader and CEO of Lanling Jin Corp?? surprised-pikachu.jpg
I know this is crack and I have no idea how this ends but someone else should definitely write it!
Feat:
retired rogue Pokemon Master Cangse Sanren who is perfectly happy to send her 10 year old into the world with nothing more than clean underwear and a washing line
Su She working for Team Rocket except every time he appears Wei Wuxian is like Who are you again? which is how he ends up coming up with a monologue that introduces himself every time he appears, it has rhyming couplets and everything
Sect Leader Yao as that damn Bug Catcher who always manages to turn around and face you just as you’re trying to walk past him so you don’t have to fight his six Lv. 2 Caterpies because asdfghjklkj fuck him

This is a WangNingXian Agenda, Baby, so in my pokemon au after Wei Wuxian and Wen Qing SUPPOSEDLY die in a house fire but actually end up falling into the distortion world (I still have to iron out the details and may need to scrap that bit completely but shhhhh), Wen Ning manages to escape with A-Yuan and, at a loss of what else to do, seeks out Lan Wangji. Whatever Wei Wuxian may have believed, Wen Ning knows that Lan Wangji had loved him—loves him still even though he’s dead. He knows because he knows the look in his eyes mirrored in his own whenever he looks at Wei Wuxian, knows because Wei Wuxian made that look back at Lan Wangji.
He ends up in Gusu, in the Cloud Recesses, carrying a feverish four year old and covered in minor burns himself. Lan Wangji is under house arrest after the catastrophic fallout of a political confrontation between Wei Wuxian and the Jins, his position and trainer license revoked and pokemon taken from him, but Wen Ning smuggles himself and A-Yuan inside and delivers the news: Wei Wuxian is dead.
Lan Wangji does not speak for a long while, paralyzed with grief as he is from all that he’s lost in the past few days, but then Wen Ning hefts the lump of cloth he’d been carrying to reveal Wen Yuan, Wei Wuxian’s son. The last surviving piece of him. Lan Wangji knows what Wen Ning brought him here for, and he accepts the responsibility of helping him care for A-Yuan.
What follows is a whacky sitcom scenario wherein Lan Wangji hides an entire man and child in his house and attempts to hide the fact that he’s hiding an entire man and child in his house, and Lan Qiren doesn’t find out (though Lan Xichen seems to know). Through this is something softer--learning about each other to a degree that they had never considered before, having been content to label each other “someone close to Wei Wuxian” and leave it at that; the cohabitation and coparenting over the next few years teaches them about each other’s habits and tics and the subtler shades of their personalities. Lan Wangji discovers in Wen Ning a courage and loyalty matched by few and a sharper humor than he expected hidden under that gentle demeanor; Wen Ning learns that Lan Wangji is actually very expressive and filled with so many emotions it’s a wonder he doesn’t burst from them. And above all, they learn exactly how deeply they can relate to each other, their overwhelming kindness for those they love and how far they are willing to go to protect them. How much they love Wei Wuxian.
Gradually, their dynamic shifts: they are brought closer, real friends as opposed to only being connected by Wei Wuxian, admitting their old jealousies and feelings of inferiority compared to each other in their standing in Wei Wuxian’s heart which is absurd now that they talk about it, reassurances to each other of how much Wei Wuxian had loved them both even if they weren’t convinced that he loved them like that. They fall in love slowly, different from the immediate infatuation and then love they both felt for Wei Wuxian, but once they’re in, they’re in.
They don’t put a label on what they are to each other, happy to simply be together as they raise A-Yuan and rebuild their lives; Lan Wangji returns to his duties as a gym leader and teacher at Lan Xichen’s behest, and Wen Ning cares for pokemon on the grounds as he did at Wen Qing’s lab/clinic/rescue and rehab facility. He gets found by some of the young trainers at the Cloud Recesses and starts teaching them medicine here and there. When Lan Qiren finds out about them he demands to know if Lan Wangji plans to follow in Qingheng-jun’s footsteps, eliciting horror and indignation on Lan Wangji’s behalf from Wen Ning and vehement refusal from Lan Wangji himself; even without that terrible legacy hovering over them, however, they refuse to marry--it feels wrong with Wei Wuxian dead. They remain as they are, and Wen Ning continues to live quietly in the Cloud Recesses.
Thirteen years after the house fire that took his family, a boy named Lan Sizhui goes to Yunmeng.

I Choose You!
AO3 LINK
POKEMON AU POKEMON AU!!!
Collaboration with @tissueboxesforseals who pitched the idea and did some amazing art!!! Go check it out!!! So glad we went on this pokemon adventure together :3
Summary: Jiang Cheng meets the most beautiful boy on the planet while trying to fight off a Natu. Which is funny because Wei Ying also has met the most beautiful boy on the planet while mud wrestling a Yungoos.
Huaisang and Wangji just want to know who these two idiots fighting random Pokemon in front of their brothers' gyms are.
---
Blocking Jiang Cheng's path to the gym was a group of the pinkest, roundest Pokemon Jiang Cheng had ever seen. Also… was that a feebas? In a fishbowl?
Well, at least he knew they weren't wild then.
"What little girl left their pokemon laying around? Why do we even let irresponsible children keep pokemon if all they're gonna do is this?" he grumbled to himself as he tried to shoo the pokemon away by nudging them with his feet. The issue was that as soon as he managed to move one, another scrambled to take up the empty spot. Then, when he turned to move that one, the first one slipped right back in. It's like they had an agenda against him. Finally, the Natu decided it was going to take horrible offense to being shifted from its resting spot and pecked harshly at his boot, causing Jiang Cheng to flinch back with a curse and almost lose his footing. Natu looked almost smug about it. God, Jiang Cheng hated birds.
Jiang Cheng clicked his tongue. What a waste of time.
"Hello? Which little girl do these things belong to?! Come collect your Pokemon! Who the hell owns these guys?!"
"That would be me," a gentle voice came up from behind him.
Jiang Cheng whirled around and got an eyeful of the prettiest boy he had ever seen. Large golden eyes framed by thick, silky hair the color of the darkest chocolate. A slim figure covered in an olive green cape, a color that matched his slightly tanned complexion perfectly. A narrow nose, curated eyebrows, long eyelashes, and plush lips all perfectly melded together on his face to create a cute expression that just screamed ... annoyance and disdain.
"My apologies for not being a little girl. Those Pokemon are mine though."
Ah. Right.
"How long have you been standing there?" Jiang Cheng asked sheepishly.
"Not too long," the boy said in a sharp tone that definitely implied that he'd just watched Jiang Cheng insult him under his breath while trying to lightly nudge his Pokemon out of the way (...with his foot) for roughly five minutes.
"Yeah. Um. Sorry about that. I just need to get through to this gym. I'm here to challenge the gym leader, you see, and I really just want to pass."
The boy nodded and made up the stairs, toward Jiang Cheng and his pokemon.
"I thought it'd be okay to leave them here for a minute or two while I grabbed something," he explained politely, but managing to still sounding supremely unimpressed to Jiang Cheng. "The front entrance is all the way around, after all. This one behind me is closed to all but staff so this path is rarely taken by anyone. Evidently, it was irresponsible of me."
Jiang Cheng's eyes widened. "I-I didn't know. I'm new to the area? I mean, I'm not from around here. I mean, I'm from Yunmeng. Do you know the region? Lots of water and beautiful in the warmer seasons--"
Jiang Cheng knew he was babbling uselessly. The other boy did too. Not paying Jiang Cheng any mind, he ordered his Pokemon aside with a wave of his hand. Immediately, Stufful and Togepi clambered onto his slim shoulders and the birds took to the air, landing on the railings at the sides. Steadying them, Pretty Boy leaned down for Hattrem, who climbed into her master's waiting arms after shooting Jiang Cheng a truly nasty look. Wordlessly, the boy then moved past Jiang Cheng and picked up his fishbowl (and that was definitely a Feebas), putting it to the side of the pathway before shifting aside himself.
"Go on then. I'm sorry to have kept you," he said with a sweeping 'after you' gesture.
Jiang Cheng was about to squeak out a thank you and book it but his plans were interrupted with a loud bark.
"Yamper! How'd you get out?!"
Jiang Cheng watched in horror as Yamper threw her fat little body at the beautiful boy, dislodging Hattrem from her comfortable spot in her owner's arms. Hattrem's pigtails rose, entering attack-mode, but a quick hand on her head stopped her mid-hiss.
"And who is this?" The boy asked, suddenly sounding delighted. Like sunlight after a storm, his golden eyes lit up. All traces of anger were immediately flushed out by the laughter Yamper's eager bids for attention drew out of him.
"Yamper," Jiang Cheng replied, unable to bring himself to wrestle the little Pokemon away from the boy and back into her pokeball. "She was the first Pokemon I got."
"She's a bit of a brat," Jiang Cheng admitted apologetically. "I can take her if you want. Sorry about this."
"Don't be," the boy told him, nuzzling his face against Yamper's rotund belly. "I love her."
Jiang Cheng couldn't stop staring as the boy cuddled his Yamper. She loved it, of course, tail wagging furiously at all the attention she was being shown. Her wet tongue on his cheek forced a surprise, loud laugh out of the boy. He really was unfairly pretty for a guy, especially when he smiled.
Finally, the boy turned his attention back at Jiang Cheng, who immediately looked off to the side to avoid being caught staring.
“I’m sorry, I got carried away,” he apologized. Jiang Cheng just shook his head, reassuring the boy that he didn’t mind, Yamper was always like this. So far, only Wei Wuxian was immune to her charms.
“But, um,” the boy said, biting on his plush lower lip in hesitation before continuing, “Actually, do you mind if I ask to see your others?”
“Huh?” Jiang Cheng started. No, he hadn't been staring at Pretty Boy’s lips.
“I-I’m sorry. It’s just that I rarely get out of this region. And when I do, I’m always just accompanying my brother. I love to see all the different types of Pokemon that people bring to the gym,” Pretty Boy admitted, suddenly bashful. “I-If you have some time, I’d love to see yours too...”
“Oh! Yeah, I have time ...” Jiang Cheng managed to snap out of his stupor enough to rummage around in his pack for his Pokeballs and summon the others.
“So I got Eevee, Shinx, Snubbull, Chinchou, Houndour, and you’ve met Yamper. Obviously.”
Pretty Boy’s eyes lit up even brighter than before. “They’re amazing! Oh, they’re so pretty!” he exclaimed, bending over slightly in order to wave hello to the rest of Jiang Cheng's team.
Jiang Cheng glowed with pride. His team was pretty amazing and well-groomed, thank you. His team preened too, immediately taken with this new person (as they are with every person to Jiang Cheng’s dismay). Houndour was already inching over towards Pretty Boy in the hopes that he’d get pet too. He was--the boy leaned down and scratched him right behind the ears.
"But wait… You're going to challenge this gym?" Pretty Boy asked, straightening up. He was still holding Yamper in his arms with the little creature still trying to lick at every single inch of her new friend’s face. The electricity in Yamper's fur was making the boy's hair stand up at odd angles, but he didn't seem to mind it.
It didn't serve to make him any less beautiful.
Well. Objectively, of course. In the same way a Milotic is beautiful. Not Jiang Cheng's opinion, just a matter of fact.
....He was so screwed.
"I am," Jiang Cheng replied with as much pride as his dry tongue would allow him.
The boy quirked an eyebrow up in response. He looked mildly concerned, turning to look at the imposing gym then back at Jiang Cheng and his little gaggle of pokemon.
"They're strong!" Jiang Cheng justified, hackles rising at the thought that he was being looked down upon. Just because they were small, doesn't mean they weren't ready! And what right did this boy have to judge? His largest pokemon was a Stufful!
Jiang Cheng swore he saw plush, pink lips quirk up in amusement at the corners, but, before he could feel properly affronted, the other boy quickly schooled his features and nodded thoughtfully.
"They must be pretty good for you to bring them all the way here. They look well trained too, aren't you?" He could not have more obviously been talking to Yamper when he cooed that last part and started scratching her stomach. Jiang Cheng's face still lit up like he was the one being praised.
He really needed to calm down.
"I can bring you to the front entrance," the boy offered, "I know the area pretty well."
Still trying to control his furious blush, Jiang Cheng nodded stiffly.
"Thanks. That'll be ... swell," Jiang Cheng said, not trusting himself to say any more.
Pretty Boy giggled. "Swell. This way then… um. I'm sorry, never asked for your name?"
"Jiang Cheng. I'm a Pokemon Trainer," he introduced himself.
"I’d gathered as much," the boy replied with a smile that assured Jiang Cheng that he was only teasing. "I'm Huaisang. It's good to meet you, Jiang Cheng"
---
“You could have told me you were the gym leader’s brother,” Jiang Cheng pouted while watching as Huaisang fed Yamper yet another cookie. “And stop that, she’ll get fat.”
“She needs to replenish her energy after the battle she just had,” Huaisang replied.
He then turned back to Yamper and started cooing again. “Don’t you, girl? You worked so hard and you deserve a treat, don’t you?”
Yamper obviously agreed, barking and hopping up and down around Nie Huaisang's feet. Her energy encouraged the others and, soon, Chinchou and Eevee joined their friend. Huaisang didn't at all mind having bundles of energy hopping away underfoot. In fact, he seemed even more taken by them, if possible.
Jiang Cheng forced himself to quit watching the adorable scene happening right next to him. He was mad at this boy, goddammit!
“Don’t change the subject! Your brother is terrifying! Why didn’t you tell me who you were?” Jiang Cheng demanded. He really shouldn’t have had to find out from Gym Leader Nie in the middle of their battle that the guy he’d been ogling just moments before getting to the gym was his younger brother.
“So, you’re the boy who my brother brought back? The one who insulted his Pokemon on the street?”
Jiang Cheng winced at the memory and Huaisang caught the movement out of the corner of his eye.
“Hey, I can guess what you’re thinking and it’s not true. My brother would have beat you into submission whether or not you knew me, that’s just his style. He’s a big dude with big Pokemon--he and his team love to throw their dumb body mass around,” Huaisang said, fondness for his older brother and his team evident in his voice despite his words.
“And there wasn’t any point in telling you I was related to the guy you were hoping to beat,” Huaisang continued, “You’d have gone in no matter what I said. Trust me, I’ve tried to warn people about the brute.”
Before Jiang Cheng could respond, Nie Mingjue’s booming voice grabbed both of their attention.
“HUAISANG!” he roared down the hall, volume unhindered by the long distance and multiple doors between him and the target of his ire, “COME GET YOUR FUCKING BIRDS!”
If Jiang Cheng strained his ears, he could almost swear that he could hear Natu screeching triumphantly.
Huaisang hurried to the door. Sticking his head out, he yelled back in an equally impressive volume, “BROTHER, IF YOU KEEP ON LIKE THAT, HATTREM’S GOING TO--”
“ARGH!” Nie Mingjue’s surprised screech answered. Well, guess Hattrem found him then.
“Too late,” Huaisang groaned.
He turned from the door and produced a whole package of cookies from his bag. Snubbull made a swipe for them, but a stern look from Jiang Cheng reminded her of her manners. She slunk over to Houndour, properly chastised. Huaisang giggled affectionately, seeming very taken by her already. Jiang Cheng couldn’t quite keep the blush off his face looking at Huaisang giggle. He didn’t understand why he felt so embarrassed, it’s not like Huaisang’s Pokemon were any better behaved.
“She’s lucky she’s cute,” Jiang Cheng grumbled. Snubbull trilled out a sad little whine in response. Jiang Cheng ignored it--his Pokemon only thought they were sly. She knew that was no way to act.
“It’s okay,” Huaisang assured him, “I’m pleased they liked my baking so much.”
Then he turned to the Pokemon and wagged a scolding finger at them.
“But these aren’t for you guys," he told them, "You’ve all eaten your share. These are for your trainer.”
Jiang Cheng startled, blinking a few times. He had to have heard that wrong. For him?! But Huaisang held out the cookies towards him, clearly expecting him to take them, and, holy shit, this guy really baked Jiang Cheng cookies? After the first impression he’d left on this boy, he went back home and made him food? And he’d wrapped them in such cute, dog-print snack bag too.
Jiang Cheng was pretty sure his face was actually glowing by the time he found his tongue again. It wasn’t his fault he was so caught off guard though! People did things like this for Wei Wuxian, not him!
“Y-You don’t have to! I haven’t gotten anything for you,” Jiang Cheng squeaked out.
“It’s a gift,” Huaisang explained, “You don’t have to give me anything back. Anyways, you need to replenish your energy too. My brother is way too hard on his opponents.”
“He’s fair,” Jiang Cheng protested, “And he gives excellent advice after. It really shows how much he cares about the trainers that come to him. You should really respect how he takes everyone seriously, no matter who they are.”
Huaisang blinked, surprised that Jiang Cheng would stand up for the man who just handed his ass to him. Jiang Cheng groaned inwardly at the silence that followed his mini-lecture.
There. He’s done it again.
But instead of being upset, Nie Huaisang’s smile stretched wider. Tenderly, he took one of Jiang Cheng's hands and placed the cookies onto a waiting palm.
“You’re overestimating him, he really is just a maniac,” Huaisang said fondly, “But, yeah, he does care a lot about his trainers. He just doesn't always know how to show it. Not everyone always sees that though and a lot of people tend to be upset with him after their battles, so…”
So Huaisang made sure to smooth things over with the trainers before they left, probably all too used to hearing angry insults spat out about his brother. He’d have long since learned to keep a straight face in the face of them, but they still sucked.
Jiang Cheng knew the feeling all too well. How many times has he had to listen to some Pokemon breeder rant on and on after his brother’s infamous curiosity got him into trouble yet again, poking his nose into private property? How often has he had to reassure yet another furious trainer that Wei Wuxian would not be touching their Pokemon again after his brother just had to see the interesting new Pokemon up close and personal? And each time, Jiang Cheng had been unable to even counter the harsh words; they were right to be mad, after all. Wei Wuxian was chaos given human form and he had the tendency to leave destruction in his wake for others to deal with. Jiang Cheng himself has shared more than a few choice words with his older brother about his behavior over the years. Still, knowing that Wei Wuxian probably deserved it never made it any easier for Jiang Cheng to stomach some stranger calling his brother “a filthy reprobate”.
So yeah, Jiang Cheng knew the feeling. He was secretly a little glad that he could ease that tension for Huaisang. He had such a nice smile and he shouldn’t have to be so tense.
Out loud, all Jiang Cheng said was, “Speaking of your brother…”
“Oh! Right! Here, take these cookies. I have to go check on my brother…. Or not.” Huaisang cut off mid-sentence to wave nervously at someone behind Jiang Cheng.
Jiang Cheng turned around to find Nie Mingjue glowering from the doorway.
Damn, the man was humongous. He seemed even bigger when angry.
“Huaisang,” Nie Mingjue ground out through gritted teeth. In one hand, he held Hattrem by her tails. She didn’t seem to mind it one bit, gleefully cheering as she batted at him with her tiny little arms. In his other hand, he held Spritzee by her feet, dangling her like a chicken. Again, the Pokemon hardly seemed alarmed. On his shoulder sat Togepi, which seemed to be Huaisang’s least dastardly team member. Lastly, there was Stufful, who had attached herself to Nie Mingjue's left leg and appeared totally content to be dragged along by the man as he marched into the room with all the rest of her friends in tow.
But wait, there was one missing. Jiang Cheng almost opened his mouth to ask about Natu but a horrid chirping noise cut him off.
Speak of the devil and he shall appear.
Natu flew in behind Nie Mingjue, free and unbothered, before landing right on Nie Mingjue’s head. She looked disgustingly smug.
“Da-Ge,” Huaisang greeted sheepishly. He hurried to signal all his Pokemon towards him. To their credit, they immediately hopped to it, leaving Nie Mingjue alone with just a wave of Huaisang’s hand. They’d obviously had training, it seemed as if they were simply very finicky about who they obeyed.
“Da-Ge, go easy on them,” Huaisang soothed, “They’re just bored.”
“They could join us for training if their that bored,” Nie Mingjue grumbled, but still deflated a bit.
“Da-Ge, not this again,” Huaisang groaned, exasperated.
Nie Mingjue rolled his eyes but didn’t push the issue. Instead, he turned to acknowledge Jiang Cheng's presence.
"Take your time to recover. Your Pokemon deserve it after a job well done. Your little guys may not have beat me, but taking out Gyrados is no small feat. Be proud."
Jiang Cheng straightened up.
"Yes, sir. I'll work hard on my trip and come back when I'm more ready."
Nie Mingjue nodded his approval, but didn't immediately divert his attention like Jiang Cheng expected him to. Instead, he looked Jiang Cheng up and down, humming to himself as he did. Jiang Cheng puffed up, trying to meet the Gym Leader's scrutiny. The man really reminded him of his mother and Jiang Cheng couldn't help but try and meet his standards.
"You say you're on a journey?" Nie Mingjue asked, a glint in his eye that had Huaisang watching his brother suspiciously from the sidelines. "Am I right to assume that's for the gym challenge?"
Jiang Cheng nodded. "Yes. My mother thought it would be good for me."
"And? Has it been?"
Jiang Cheng didn't understand why he was being interrogated, but he didn't dare leave the man hanging either.
"So far, yes. I've seen many different Pokemon and…" Jiang Cheng found his eyes sliding over to Huaisang, "... and I've met many interesting new people. I'd never have gotten this experience if I had stayed at home."
Nie Mingjue nodded. He appraised Jiang Cheng one last time before turning towards Huaisang, who was busying himself while they talked by fussing over Natu and petting Yamper who, once again, found her way into his arms.
"Huaisang, go with him when he leaves," he ordered his younger brother.
"I always see them out," Huaisang assured his brother.
"No," Nie Mingjie shook his head. "I mean grab that bag you've had packed for ages and go. With my blessing, as long as you stay with this young man."
….. what?
WHAT?!
"Da-Ge?!" Huaisang asked, sounding as confused as Jiang Cheng felt.
Suddenly, a hard slap landed on Jiang Cheng's shoulder. It easily almost pitched him straight off the bed he was sitting in, how strong was this guy?!
"Take care of him and bring him home in one piece, kid. And don't coddle him, he can take care of himself despite the whining."
He had to be joking, right? No way was The Nie Mingjue just casually pitching his notoriously-beloved younger brother at Jiang Cheng. No way. This was definitely some weird joke and any minute now Nie Mingjue would let the two of them in on it.
"Da-Ge, you cannot be serious.” Huaisang spoke for the both of them since Jiang Cheng was finding himself at a loss for words.
"You've wanted to go on an adventure, right? Get out of the house more?" Nie Mingjue asked Huaisang. Huaisang sputtered for a response.
"Not-Not like this! You can't just-just shoehorn me out the door!"
Nie Mingjue merely laughed in the face of his brother's distress.
"I think you'll find I can. Get your bags, Huaisang! Actually, I'll get them for you. You two catch up!"
"Wait! I said wait, you oaf! Hey!"
---
The sun was already setting by the time they made it to the end of the very path Jiang Cheng had met Nie Huaisang on just earlier today.
"... you don't actually have to stay with me the whole way. My brother's just an overprotective idiot, I'll be fine without a babysitter."
Huaisang bit his lower lip and shot Jiang Cheng a self-deprecating smile. Jiang Cheng's heart clenched at seeing so much insecurity and doubt mar the other boy's features. If Jiang Cheng were being honest? He'd found himself really hoping Huaisang would want to come with him ever since Nie Mingjue had returned with a heavy pack and a still-protesting-Huaisang in tow. He got lonely sometimes, he could admit it. He missed having company, and he could do worse than Nie Huaisang for company. A lot worse.
But he couldn't exactly just say that, could he? He'd just met the kid, he'd definitely creep him out if he seemed too eager to have him follow along.
Jiang Cheng put his hands in his pockets, awkwardly trying to find the words. In his pocket he found the small package that Huaisang had gifted him with earlier, still filled with cookies. He'd almost forgotten about that that--he'd carefully tucked them into a pocket in the middle of all the confusion, promising to try one later.
"It's fine," Jiang Cheng finally worked up the courage to reply, "Just think of it as a thank you for the cookies."
Huaisang blinked at him incredulously.
"I'll be in your hands, partner."

WANGXIAN! POKEMON AU! WANGXIAN! POKEMON AU!
Summary: Wei Wuxian is pretty sure he’s been labelled the most annoying Pokemon trainer on the face of the Earth at this point, and he intends to defend his title. He’ll start with this stuck up kid who just caught him mud-wrestling a Yungoos.
Eevee and Gengar held him back by his jacket, the little traitors. He hand raises them and this is the thanks he gets? They would allow him to be disrespected by this Yungoos without a fight? Clearly, they've been spending too much time with Jiang Cheng and his incessant nagging. Wei Ying loved his brother, but he lived his life on the straight and narrow too much--what's life without a bit of trouble?!
Trouble, this time, took the form of a thieving Yungoos taking his sandwich.
Did he have others? Yes. Did he need that back? No. The sandwich was filthy now, he couldn't even eat it. But no little rodent was gonna steal from Wei-gege and get away with it that easily… unless his Pokemon have something to say about it.
Wei Wuxian tugged at his jacket. "Hey, come on! Heel! Sit! Lemme at him!"
Eevee shot him a truly unimpressed look and didn't loosen her jaw in the slightest. Ok, fair. Wei Wuxian has never once taught his Pokemon any commands to follow so he probably sounded like a madman screaming orders at them. But still! She understood him! He knows she did! Show some filial piety here, girl!
"Fine!" Wei Wuxian groaned, shoulders sagging in defeat. "Fine. Let me go and I won't do anything. On my honor."
This time, his whole team shot him judgemental looks. Mimikkyu even stuck his fake head out from inside the bag to judge him with beady little fake eyes. They weren't even his real eyes and Wei Ying could still feel the judgement rolling off of them!
What is up with that?! Zero respect, he gets zero respect!
"I won't!" he insisted. "Besides, what are you gonna do? Hang onto me forever?"
Eevee looked like she was considering it, but she followed suit when Gengar reluctantly loosened her grip.
"Thank you," Wei Ying said calmly, being the bigger person. "See? I won't do anything. On my honor, I won't."
And he really wasn't going to. He reached into his pack to grab another sandwich, to prove to this Yungoos that he wasn't any broke bitch and could afford his own food without having to steal it from unsuspecting travellers.
...But then he heard a derisive sniff come from the Yungoos. The little creature actually scoffed at him!
"Got something to say?!"
Yungoos only sniffed again and… turned his tail at him?! Showed Wei Ying his ass-end?! Disrespected him in front of his own children!
Oh. It was ON.
He thrust his bag at Gengar and jumped into the fray before any of his team could react.
Sorry guys, he never had much honor anyways.
---
“What are you doing?”
Wei Wuxian freed himself just enough to look up towards the source of the question. He found a boy dressed in pure white staring down at him with a pinched expression.
“Nothing much?” Wei Ying replied, managing to free his shoulder from the sharp jaws digging into his flesh and face slam the screeching Yungoos into the dirt. “Why do you ask?”
The boy’s expression only became more pinched. “Let the Pokemon up, please.”
Wei Ying suddenly realized how this must look from an outsider’s perspective.
“Hey, hey! Listen! He started it!” But he let the Yungoos go anyways. The little demon hissed and ran towards the boy in white who easily plucked the little creature up and checked him over. Oh sure, now it was docile. Determining that it wasn’t truly injured, the boy set the Pokemon down.
Watching Yungoos race off, Wei Ying asked, “Hey… he wasn’t, like, yours, was he?”
The boy shook his head and Wei Ying sighed in relief. At least he could avoid that earful. Though, the boy was still looking at him like he was dirt beneath his pristine boots--which, considering the state of him right now, was kind of fair...
Well! No time like now to make a new friend, then! As soon as this boy spent some time with him, Wei Ying was sure he would be able to wipe this horrid first impression clean from his mind!
...Which could be hard to do if the boy left.
Wei Ying hopped to his feet and gave chase. He couldn’t let this boy leave until he’d at least gotten the chance to explain! He couldn’t lose out on a potentially interesting friend because of a stinking Yungoos. He heard the pitter-pattering of little feet following after him, letting him know that his team was right behind him.
“Hey, wait up!” Wei Ying called out. When the boy didn’t stop, he tried again. “Either you stop or I’m grabbing your perfect white jacket with my muddy, muddy hands!”
The boy halted and turned to grimace at Wei Ying. “What is it?”
Wei Ying wasted no time. “I’m Wei Ying, courtesy name is Wuxian. And you are?”
The grimace got deeper, but apparently the boy was too polite to not answer him.
“Lan Zhan. Courtesy name is Wangji.”
“Cool name!” Wei Ying admired. “You can call me Wei Ying. Or XianXian. Or even A-Xian, if you’d like.”
The boy nodded. “And you may call me Wangji.”
Ouch.
“Lan Zhan rolls off the tongue much better!” Wei Ying pressed on, undeterred.
“Wangji is just as easy to say,” his new pal insisted.
Stingy! Wei Wuxian was sure that even Jiang Cheng wasn’t this prickly! At least his brother would try to get along with anyone who wanted to befriend him. This guy was obviously giving off some very strong “Do Not Breathe Near Me, Filthy Mortal” vibes.
Well! Unfortunately for him, that only made Wei Wuxian more likely to suck in all the oxygen around him! Back home, they called him the world’s most loveable menace (or at least his sister had)! He wouldn’t be giving that title up easily! This boy could obviously use a friend and some lessons in chilling out and Wei Ying would happily provide them for him.
Plus, it didn’t hurt that, objectively, this was the most beautiful person he’d ever seen in his entire life. Wei Ying would like to think he was good looking for a kid and no one in his family was ugly by any means, but this guy blew them all out of the water! Skin as white as alabaster and as smooth-looking as jade! Features that looked as if they were carved by a master sculptor working on his magnum opus! Long, inky hair flowed with every step he took! Thin, pale lips with no sign of dryness or imperfection! Groomed, broad shoulders, narrow hips, long legs, tall, well-dressed! He was like a prince out of a fairytale!
And Wei Ying bet that he’d be even prettier with a genuine smile on his face! Though, that wasn’t to say that the look of mild-disdain he was giving Wei Ying now took away from his attractiveness in the least.
He was entirely fascinating! And Wei Ying was definitely staring!
“Well,” Lan Wangji sniffed, turning to leave yet again, “If that’s all then…”
Shit. Wait. He hadn’t at all managed to redeem himself! All he had done was give his name, annoyed the kid more, and stared at him like a creep. Wei Ying hurriedly wracked his brains for something to keep the boy around. Somehow, that translated into him frantically looking around the area looking for something more to talk about. It was then that he noticed….
“OH MY GOD! You have a Glaceon?! Did you evolve her yourself? Oh, look at her!”
Wei Ying didn’t even give Lan Zhan a chance to respond, lunging forward and scooping up Glaceon and swinging her around, making sure to get a good look at her from all angles..
“How did you already get her evolved, you can’t be too much older than me! Eevee, are you seeing this? Evolve into this, she’s so pretty! Woah! Her fur sparkles! What?!”
Lan Wangji cleared his voice sharply, grabbing Wei Ying’s attention.
“He doesn’t like to be touched by strangers.”
Wei Ying felt his fingers go icy-cold. He looked down at his hostage and only caught a glimpse of Glaceon’s glare before yelping at the feeling of sharp claws raking across his cheek.
---
“It’s very minor frostbite,” Lan Zhan told him, “You should recover fully within a day. The scratches should also heal without scarring, they were very superficial.”
He was gentle as he finished applying some antibiotic to Wei Wuxian’s cheek.
"Thanks. For bringing me to your medical bay and for the help. And sorry for scaring your Glaceon."
Lan Zhan nodded his acceptance of the apology and started to pack up the supplies. Wei Ying laughed awkwardly, never any good with silence.
"So your brother's the gym leader, huh?" Wei Ying had gotten to meet Gym Leader Lan Xichen and was embarrassed that he hadn't made the connection until he saw the resemblance between the two brothers. He had helped both boys to the medical wing when Lan Wangji had dragged a bleeding Wei Wuxian onto his doorstep. He was as kind and serene as people said he was, even if he had looked close to cracking once he'd heard the full story.
"Yes. You are here to challenge him, correct?"
And, technically, he was right. Wei Ying and his brother had both set out to challenge trials and gyms, trying to get as many as they could. It was a trial a lot of young trainers underwent and there was no way Madam Yu would ever allow her children to skip it. If they were going to do this, they would do it right! Or so help her, lord….
But now that Wei Ying had seen Lan Xichen's lineup, he was starting to wonder whether or not he should wait. He didn't even know where he'd even begin with a Wailord, how does one take down something the size of two whole houses? That thing could fit a city on his back! The only thing he could imagine might work would be to have Pachirisu zap the water and that was dangerous on so many levels! Even Wei Ying wasn't that reckless, no matter what his reputation was! He wasn't looking to die die.  And, well, not to mention that it may not even work--Pachirisu could hardly produce a bolt that strong yet.
Of course, it didn't hurt that the longer he waited, the more time he'd have to get to know Lan Zhan, who only got more and more fascinating the less he talked to Wei Ying. And he really did not want to talk to Wei Ying. At this point, the ever-silent Lan Wangji was practically the most curious thing on the planet!
"I don't know," Wei Ying said with a shrug. "Hey, maybe I'll stick around, see the area. It's beautiful landscape and I'm something of an artist! Maybe… you could show me around?"
Lan Wangji looked like he enjoyed that idea as little as Wei Ying had expected him to. It took everything in his power to not laugh at the sour face the boy was pulling. His face could really get stuck that way at this rate!
Lan Wangji opened his mouth to--presumably to tell Wei Wuxian to get lost and die (probably in much more polite terms but with the same meaning)--when a melodious voice interrupted their conversation.
"If Mr. Wei truly is so taken by our humble little corner, you are naturally welcome to stay as long as you like. We have more than enough empty rooms in this compound," Lan Xichen offered generously as he entered the room with quiet, graceful steps.
"R-Really?!" Wei Ying cannot say he was expecting this outcome. He knew that Gym Leader had probably found him cute enough for a kid, but not enough that he’d want to invite him willingly into his home! Expecially with how much his brother obviously hated him.
Lan Xichen nodded though. "Of course! Presuming you show me the art you produce. I consider myself something of an artist too, you see."
"Brother…" Lan Zhan protested, his voice flat and filled with disapproval, but he was silenced by a single smile.
"Wangji, show Mr. Wei around, will you? Maybe he can even help you on your task.”
"That is not necessary," Lan Zhan cut his brother off as quickly as possible, clearly trying to nip that idea off at the bud.
Too late, Wei Ying heard that.
"Gym Leader Lan, you're as good as they say! I'll be happy to share any of my sketches!" Wei Ying thanked the big brother before turning to hound his new friend (and they would be friends. Wei Ying would get to know this kid if it killed them both).
Lan Wangji’s expression couldn’t be called a sneer, per se. But Wei Ying had a feeling that it was as close as the other boy had ever gotten to sneering in his life.
Excellent.
"Hey, I can help with your task! I'm actually pretty strong, you know. And, more importantly, I'll literally do anything! Nothing is too lowly for me, I have zero use for pride! No need to be embarrassed, just ask away! What do you need? Hey, don't ignore me! I'm saying I can help! Hey! HEY! Lan Zhan, wait for me! I'm coming too!"
Glaceon hissed at him as he made to follow Lan Zhan out the door. Wei Ying happily ignored him.
