Thinking of a fic idea, where Zack Fair is Sora’s dad.
That’s it that’s the fic.
Just an explanation for why sora is the way he is:
🌈Zack fair genes 🧬🌈
Like it would be canon divergent obviously. Zack would still have traveled the worlds, but that was before he met Sora’s mom and settled in Destiny islands.
And he’s all the kid’s favourites because he’s a big kid. He rows them out to the play island and wears funny patterned beach shirts, and helps them build most of the ladders and ramps on the island.
He tells them all stories about his adventures, and about his friends.
Sora adores him. He wants to be exactly like his dad when he grows up. But as he gets a little older he begins to see some of the sadness in Zack. Hears the restrained pain when he talks about his best friend cloud, or stares at the picture of Aerith he keeps in his wallet next to his picture of Sora and his wife.
He thinks she’s dead, so Soras mum doesn’t begrudge Zack his mourning for a lost love.
There’s a picture in the house of him squall and Cloud. He’s got the other boys in head locks and Squall looks like he’s about to brake Zacks kneecaps while Cloud looks like he’s contemplating biting Zack.
When the island explodes Zack gets flung onto wonderland, where he’s kind of just trying to survive without going mad. When Sora gets there he has a bit of a mini brake-down on Zack. Full frowns and sad faces (fuck Donald for telling him he couldn’t grieve) and them heading back to Traverse town where Zack has his own mini brake-down about his friends being safe.
Seeing Aerith safe is bittersweet because he has grieved her loss and while he absolutely still loves her he also really loves Sora’s mom.
He asks about Cloud and Squall can’t look him in the Eye as he tells him they suspect he’s dead. Zack has exactly two seconds to feel devastated before his son pipes up that for a dead guy Cloud sure knows how to use a sword, and that’s how they find out their friend isn’t dead.
I dunno man, I’m just feeling some Zack Fair feels after playing through crisis core, and I want to see more of him in KH…
So have this mess of an AU.

Trying to get back into writing and I wanted to do something for the KH anniversary.
Five birthdays Riku spends with Sora.
Riku couldn’t believe his friend sometimes. Sora was tugging him along excitedly, going on and on about how much fish they were gonna catch today. Sora’s father was a few feet ahead, heading towards the dock to their family fishing boat. He didn’t know why his friend wanted to spend his birthday fishing on the play island, they could do that any day of the week. Birthdays were the one day you got to do something special.
If it were him, he be asking his parents to take a trip to the mainland. Anything to leave this boring island. But, today was Sora’s birthday, not his and he wouldn’t dare ruin it with his negative feelings. He let go of Sora’s hand and started racing to the port, knowing Sora would immediately catch on to the challenge.
If he slowed down a bit to let Sora win, no one could blame him. It was Sora’s birthday after all.
--
Riku watched as Kairi and Sora headed towards the shore, keeping at least a couple feet of distance between them and the water. Riku spent too many birthdays with Sora to know what would happen next. Now that Kairi had become a permanent member of their friend group, she had to learn her lesson the hard way. As soon as they reached the shallow part of the water, Sora went for the attack. The younger boy splashed the water, hitting Kairi right in the face.
She screeched in outrage and immediately went to retaliate but Sora was already running in the opposite direction. Riku would give them another minute before he joined in. He may not understand why his friend like to spend his birthdays on the island so much but, moments like made him see the appeal.
--
Kairi and Riku rowed in silence, knowing there was nothing they could say that would cheer up their friend. Sora held a small box in a white-knuckled grip, eyes dazed and Riku knew nothing would get through to him. Once they reached the play island, it took a few moments of proding to get the younger boy out of the boat. His movements were robotic, probably heading towards the shore on muscle memory alone.
Kairi and Riku flanked either side of Sora as he waded in the water, stopping when it was a bit past his ankles. He knelt down to empty contents of the box, and they watched with bated breath as ashes start floating on the surface, watching as it slowly got pulled further into the ocean mixing in the waves. Until they became one with the waters.
It’s tradition on Destiny Islands to scatter the ashes of a loved one on the third day of mourning. You are supposed to do with your family but, Sora’s mom has been checked out ever since the funeral. Not even caring that Sora’s last moment, last birthday with his father falls today.
It doesn’t matter, Kairi and Riku are Sora’s family all the same. They wouldn’t abandon him when he need them the most. Riku needs to find a way to get them off this island. He refuses to be bound to this island even after death and won’t let his friends have to suffer the same.
He decided this would be the last birthdays they celebrated on the island.
--
It’s kind of ironic that Riku had spent so many years wanting to leave the islands and wished Sora would pick any place but there to hang out. If only his past self could see him now, he was sad that Sora (his Nobody at least) couldn’t go to a beach. Well, a simulated one but a beach all the same. It was surprising how much Roxas was like Sora sometimes.
He stepped away from the computer and wandered towards the pod to where Sora was being held. He watched as his friend slept peacefully and vowed he’d get him back home in time for his next birthday. For the first time in his life, he wished that he was back on the play island again.
At least then, he could wish his friend a happy birthday.
--
Riku wandered around the city, slightly overwhelmed by all the noise and bright lights coming from the buildings. If it were any other day, he would feel panicked and lost on what direction to even start his search for his friend. But, there was only one place Sora would be on his birthday and he asked one of the locals where the closest beach was.
It wasn’t a long journey, just a one-hour train ride and ten-minute walk from the station. He walked slowly across the sand and took a moment to smell the sea breeze, wondering why his younger self could hate places like this. He let his feet guide him, knowing his dream eater bond would lead him to his friend.
It wasn’t long before he found him, standing at the edge of the shore, and gazing into the ocean. Riku didn’t waste his time and ran over to him, trapping him in a crushing hug.
He felt Sora wrap his arms around his waist and return the embrace with as much vigor. He tried to keep together but couldn’t help the tears that fell from his eyes. “Happy Birthday Sora,” he managed to choke out, not caring about being the sappy one.
Sora grinned up at him with tears of his own and Riku was so grateful that he would get many more birthdays with him. Even if they would always hang out at the beach.

Chapter Three: Either I’m Hallucinating or this Beach is Getting Weird
The Destiny Islands were a series of small, sparsely-populated islands, connected by bridge or canal or just by “we can see it from the beach, so it counts as one of us.” The island that Sonic, Sally and Shadow spent all their time on was the only one without any real settlement. It could probably support one, what with the amount of plants that thrived there, but nobody had really seen the need to move out there when they could just live on one of the already-populated islands. That small isle, though, had once been very popular for children to play on, pretending they had their own village and running it by trading sand dollars as currency and making houses out of twigs. So there were a few things built on this island– a few docks for boats, a few tiny, makeshift houses that remained from the days of play, and a couple large, more competently-built treehouses that parents had installed to entertain their kids even more. The wood was chipping in the houses, and the ropes at the dock never held for long, but the three orphans didn’t really mind. It was only a minute’s voyage from the main island, anyway, so they could swim if they lost a boat. Shadow and Sally had done that a few times, when they’d lost their boat and they needed to get someone to row over here and pick up Sonic, who couldn’t go more than knee-deep into the waves without racing back for the shore.
Of course, the journey would be slightly more difficult in a storm.
Sonic went to the boat rentals, scanning them quickly and seeing that none of them appeared missing. Shadow and Sally must have swam, then.
Maybe they have it handled.
Or maybe the waves pulled them under.
Sonic shuddered and began untying a boat. He felt a bit bad about using it without permission, but he could always apologize later. Or leave the boat on the beach for them to find.
Rowing in the rain was a challenge. Firstly, because the ocean was pretty pissed whenever it stormed, and the boat would rock incessantly as the waves stirred angrily below. Second, every time Sonic was splashed, he would think, oh my God we’re sinking, oh my God we’re gonna die, which would be funny on a sunny day, and annoying as hell on a rainy one, where water literally fell onto him every half-a-second. Sonic decided the best way to keep his cool while rowing to the small island was to close his eyes and pretend he was somewhere else. This worked for about a minute, until he realized he was rowing in the wrong direction, and so he had to force his eyes open as he pushed the boat through the tearing waves, against the tide, doing his best to just get to the shore as fast as possible, please.
When he was finally close enough, he leapt out of the boat and dragged it onto the sand. Maybe he parked it a bit too far inland, but he didn’t want it to float away. Now it would be a pain to get back. Ugh, he couldn’t worry about that now, he had to find his friends.
Once he’d finished pushing the boat, he ran to the nearest dock, looking to see if Shadow and Sally maybe did have boats there after all. They did not, but that wasn’t what drew his attention, oh no.
Above him, against the furious gray clouds, was a churning, black sphere. It centered in the sky, like a too-big, too-angry moon, full of fire and thunder. It sparked, creating its own lightning inside of itself, swirling and letting out a frightening, dark hum. Like all the fury of the storm was collecting itself into the center of the sky, waiting for the chance to break free. How had he not seen that on his way over? Did anyone else see it? Did…?
“What the–”
He heard a strange sound behind him, and whipped around, staring in horror as something formed from the shadows.
If he’d been in a state to think, he would have recognized the forms as they grew, from the dream he’d had on the beach just the day before. But he was already panicked, and these weird creatures and strange void hanging above the beach was just adding to it. Sonic looked down at the dock, seeing an oar stashed off to the side, so he grabbed it and swung, knocking one of the shadow creatures aside. It went flying a few feet, but then got up as if nothing had happened and charged him. The others began to run for him, too, and after swinging the oar helplessly a few times, Sonic decided that the best idea was to do what he always did. Run.
The raft. They’ll be at the raft.
They left the raft tied to the third dock, by the sitting-tree, so he ran in that direction, weaving between palm trees and leaping over fallen fruit and sparkling foliage, refusing to turn around and see if the creatures followed, his terrified mind wondering if each thunderclap was from the sky or the swirling void reaching for him. His dreads fell into his face, so he cursed and pulled them back into a ponytail, hoping that the few seconds he slowed down to do that wouldn’t cause anything to catch up to him.
But what would catch up? What are those things? What am I running from?
Sonic stumbled out of the trees and onto the edge of the dock. He slid to a stop, the sand under his feet sliding and scattering, as he stared forward.
He could see a form, on the other side of the dock, looking into the sky. The swirling black-and-red hair made it obvious who it was.
“Shadow!” Sonic called out. “Shadow! Shadow, where’s Sal? What’s going on, are–”
Barely audible over the thunder, Shadow said, without turning around, “The door opened.”
“Wh- what?”  Sonic stuttered. “What did– did you see those things that– Shadow, what is going on?”
“The door opened, Sonic!” Shadow turned, then, his hair whipping against his face, a strange excitement in his eyes that Sonic had never seen before. “Now we can go to the outside worlds!”
“What are you talking about? We gotta find Sal–”
“Sally’s coming with us.”
“What are you saying? Do you even know where–  Shadow, look out!”
Sonic stumbled back, staring up at the sky. The swirling void was growing, getting bigger, almost as if it were getting closer– but the sky couldn’t just fall, could it?
“Once we step through,” Shadow said, his voice too calm, “We may not be able to return. But we can never turn back. This may be our only chance. We can’t let fear stop us!”
He turned, then, holding out his hand, as if he expected Sonic to run to him.
“I’m not afraid of the darkness,” he said.
And then, before Sonic could say anything, the void above appeared beneath his best friend’s feet. Swirling darkness reached up through the ground, wrapping around Shadow’s feet.
“Shadow!”
Sonic tried to run to him, but the darkness spread quickly, and he was still several feet away when his own feet were entangled. It was like a nightmare, where you just can’t run fast enough for anything– his feet slowed, his arm reached out, but Shadow was just too far. Sonic screamed, and the darkness reached up farther, wrapping around his arm, leaping into his eyes…
Then, as quickly as it had appeared, the darkness was gone, and so was Shadow.
And in Sonic’s outstretched hand was a key.
It was about half the size of him, so Gaia only knew what door it was meant to open. But it had a circle around the hilt he held, sparkling with stones, decorative flares beneath. The blade reached forwards into what looked like three jagged lightning bolts, sticking in all different directions. And at the end of the hilt, a short chain, already blowing in the wind, a strangely-shaped blue charm on the end that darted around the wind.
Almost instinctively, Sonic knew its name. Keyblade.
He looked up to where Shadow had stood, but he really was gone. Sonic blinked, shaking his head, before looking down at the blade once more.
Find Sally.
He was switching to autopilot now, as too many questions burst against his brain for him to safely process all at once. No time to answer them. He just had to find Sally.
He began to run back across the beach, until one of the shadow creatures leapt for him, appearing from nowhere. He swung the blade, as he had swung the shield in his dream, and the creature vanished into nothing but smoke.
Find Sally. Where could she be?
If she wasn’t at the raft, she could be near the treehouses or… the cave system! Yes, she loved to explore the caves and try to explain the different rock formations. Sonic could never remember any of them, but he remembered where the cave  was.  It would be a safe place to ride out a storm. She’d be there. She had to be there.
He ran again, his feet carrying him forwards, swinging his blade to push leaves and branches out of his way, wielding it wildly through the air at any shadow that looked like it might be moving closer towards him.
Just keep going. Don’t stop to think. Just find Sal.
He found the caves, the cracked opening jutting out of a cliffside. He ducked inside, ignoring the chafing stone that his arm grazed against, ignoring the clang of his keyblade against the rocky walls. He ran forwards, until he reached the first large clearing, and…
Sally stood there, staring at a door.
A simple, wooden door, with no discernable doorknob, upright on the wall. He’d never seen it before, but the rock around it faded inwards, like it had been there forever and nature itself had adapted to it. Sally was in front of it, stock-still, like Shadow had been.
“Sal!”
Sally turned, her eyes glazed over. “Sonic?” she called, her voice blank, a hand reaching towards him.
“Sal–”
The door suddenly flew open, and from the other side burst that darkness, the arms of the void. Like a terrible smoke pushed on the fastest wind, it surged forwards, pushing Sally off-balance. She stumbled, and then began to race, running faster than Sonic had ever seen her run, and then suddenly…
Instead of running into him, she was going through him. He didn’t know how, but he was looking down, and she was moving through his chest. She felt like everything, and like nothing at all.
And then she, too, was gone.
The darkness pushed him back, too, back out of the cave, and onto the beach. He screamed, toppling over into the sand, which flew into his eyes and mouth. He shook himself, trying to stand again, but as he opened his eyes, he began to wish he hadn’t.
For where the waves should be, there was only darkness.
The stormclouds surrounded the island, spinning around it as if the entire place had been shoved in the center of a tornado. Lightning flashed, thunder nearly broke his ears with the fierceness of its roar. He stumbled to his feet, gasping and shaking, planting the keyblade in the ground to try and use it to stand up straight.
Another loud, guttural roar, and he turned and saw the big, shadowy monster from his dream. Staring. Eyes glowing yell, hand reaching…
Sonic didn’t waste any time. He ducked from the grabbing hand and ran towards it. He didn’t have a shield this time, but he did have something better– a sharp object.
He got as close as he could to the creature, and then jumped, driving the blade directly into the keyhole in its center. He expected to fly through it, but instead some force pushed him back, his hands barely managing to keep a hold on the hilt of the keyblade. He fell to the sand, and as his head shot up, he looked into the swirling void once more, ten times bigger than the last time he’d seen it. The shadow creature floated up, disappearing into that swirling nothing, and before Sonic could do anything more, the fierce wind blew him up, up into the sky, into the clouds, and then everything was black, and Sonic passed out.
~
Sniff sniff. Sniff sniff.
Sonic vaguely heard the sniffing, though he didn’t really process it over the ringing in his ears. His head was still spinning, and full of thick clouds of confusion.
Find Sal… find Shadow… find…
Find…
His eyes flared open as he suddenly felt a sloppy tongue swipe across his face. He found himself, then, face-to-face with a golden retriever, one who looked like he’d never had an unhappy thought in his life. Or any thoughts, really.
“Wha–”
The dog barked excitedly, then backed up, scratching itself.
Dogs were rare on Destiny Islands. Occasionally a passing boat would have one onboard that the kids could play with, but it was far from a guarantee. So the first thing Sonic thought was, Where did this dog come from?
Then, where the hell am I?
Then, oh, yeah. Whatever the hell just happened.
He reached his arms back, trying to pull himself up, only to feel an unfamiliar foundation beneath him. He looked down, seeing the concrete floor, then behind him, the cracked brick wall. This room must be so small, the other wall was just on the other side of the dog– no, this wasn’t a room, this was an alley. As he stumbled to his feet, he saw several overturned trash cans, and a few stacked boxes.
Yes, I’m in a weird alley, with a weird dog, in a weird place I have never seen before.
Not the most mind-blowing thing that happened in the last ten minutes.
The dog ran up to him again, licking at his hand. Sonic looked down at him, a bit surprised. He realized the dog had a collar on, one that looked pretty fancy, and he leaned down to read the name on the tag.
“Ozzie.”  he said. “Okay, boy. Do  you  know where we are?”
The dog looked up at him, tail wagging, and then took off running.
“Hey, wait!”
The dog raced from the alley, and Sonic followed. What else was he gonna do? Sit in the alley and cry? Wait for a stranger to find him?
No, he’d rather be running.
So he ran after the dog, barely keeping it within his sight as it winded down confusing streets. This place was eerie; there were too many buildings, too close to each other, roofs too slanted and streets too hard beneath his feet. This place was too big, much bigger than the island village. But strangest of all, it was dead silent. No voices coming from other roads or inside buildings, no chirping birds from the sky, no breeze pushing behind him. Just the  clack  of the dog’s claws as it raced forward, and the  thud  of Sonic’s feet following.
The dog raced into what seemed to be a commerce center; signs hung above each building, decorated with fancy lettering signifying what each of them sold. A clothes store, a bakery, a photography studio. The dog raced between a laundromat and a library, vanishing from Sonic’s sight. Sonic began to follow once more, until he was stopped by a shadow forming in front of him.
Not again.
He whipped his head around, eyes wide, as six of those shadow creatures formed in a circle around him. The second they all formed, they charged; Sonic leapt into the air, diving to the side, and rolled across the ground. The harsh stone path slammed against his back, and he let out a curse as he backed up farther.
He let his instincts guide him, and he held out his hand, and the keyblade appeared once more. He launched himself back up to his feet, and he ran for the creatures, swinging the blade through the shadows, watching them disappear into the air.
Once they were gone, he dropped his shoulders, taking a breath and putting his free hand to his stomach.
What the hell was happening?
He reached up to a stray dread that fell into his face, pushing it behind his ear, and then he looked down at the keyblade. He took a moment to inspect the keychain for a moment; a circle centered it, with three spikes breaking out of its right side and drifting downwards, as well as two triangles atop. Across from the spikes was a little oval, pushing from the lower left. The triangles kinda looked like ears, maybe the oval a nose? Looked like the face of some strange animal head? Figuring out what it was was currently the least of his worries. He let the keychain fall and clatter against the blade, and pulled his jacket sleeve down a bit farther, as the city air was cold to him.
He took a few steps forward, and then heard a deep voice behind him.
“You should pay more attention. The Heartless’ll come at you out of nowhere.”
Sonic whipped around, gawking at the woman standing just a few feet away. She had appeared out of nowhere, with no sound. Or maybe she’d run up while he was fighting the shadows?
“And they’ll keep coming at you.” she continued. “As long as you hold that.” She lifted her hand, and pointed directly at his keyblade.
Sonic stiffened, reaching his other hand to grab the hilt and hold up the sword, pointing it at her, just in case she tried to charge.
“But why you?” she cocked her head to the side. “Why choose you?”
“Wh-what’s that supposed to mean? Who are you?”
The woman stepped forwards, and Sonic retreated back, scanning her up and down. She wore purple and black, two looped earrings hanging from her left ear, sharp green eyes watching him the same way he watched her.
“Nevermind me.” she said. “Show me the keyblade.”
“No.” Sonic stepped back again, his hands gripping tightly to the hilt.
“Alright. Have it your way.” she said.
Then, before he could even move, she launched herself forwards, almost flying through the air. Then she was behind him, and he felt her hand slam against his head, and then there was some kind of smoke, some kind of  push  against him, and everything was black once more.
 ~
The child fell, and Ebony caught him in her arms. She looked down at the key in his hand; the blade clattered against the ground, but his hands kept their grip on the hilt. Her eyes drifted to the swinging keychain. Slowly, she reached out an arm, taking it from him. After just a second, the key vanished into nothing.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered. “I’m sorry it chose you. And now you may be our only hope.”

codywan gang, listen up
Currently in 2022, we have uploaded 1,957 works to the codywan tag:
Tumblr media
What does that mean? We only need 267 new codywan works to be published in December to get to 2224 works uploaded this year.
I’m incredibly impressed with the amount of content we’ve made this year - and if we reach 2224 works, that would be the cherry on top, so to speak. Let’s all get cracking!!

I’m excited to present the preview for what I’ve been working on with @sunflowersinheaven for the @codywanreversebang! It’s been lovely to see all the works come together with posting starting soon, and I hope you enjoy this little sneak peek of the fic too 💖
“What’s this I hear about you and Kenobi going on a date this morning?” Bly asks. Cody nearly chokes on his drink. “A what? There was no–” He clears his throat. “Obi-Wan and I attended an issue that needed resolving before anything got out of hand. When it was done we had brunch, and that’s it.” Obi-Wan had introduced him to the concept of brunch during their unexpected meal. Cody feels a little bit cocky that he’s managed to use it in a sentence already. “Brunch?” Bly squeaks, eyes going wide in shock. “Oh, by all things natborns hold holy, you’re oblivious. You’re both completely, utterly, unswervingly, oblivious.” Cody elbows him. Bly splutters, but he points a finger at Cody. “That’s not true,” Cody says, thinking about how he’d almost touched Obi-Wan’s hand earlier this week, and how he’d knocked their feet together under the table today. Obi-Wan had not been averse to those gestures – nor to the other dozens of occasions where nearly something more happened, whether he or Cody had almost initiated it. “We are not oblivious.” “Then what? You’ve decided to do the pining stage for so long because you can’t stand not to be the expert in something?” “That’s not it either.” “Then I’m confused,” Bly says, leaning forward. “You do acknowledge that you like Master Kenobi, right?” “Of course I like him,” Cody says, looking at Bly dubiously. “No!” Bly huffs. “I mean, you want to squish his little cheeks and see him in his bathrobe and have front row seats every time he wrecks someone’s shit.” Bly’s eyes have gone a little dreamy. Cody elbows him, which Bly protests loudly. “I think you’re projecting your feelings towards a certain someone onto me,” Cody says flatly. “You know what I mean!” Bly huffs. “You want to kiss him and hold him and you feel all fluttery and warm when you see him. Don’t lie to my face Cody, I’ve known you too long for that.” Cody had known what Bly meant the first time, but it’s always run to rile him. “Of course I like him,” he repeats dryly, and Bly groans. “Then what’s going on between you two? Come on, I gotta tell Aayla the gossip. Don’t leave me out here without any backup. She has a mean streak, I swear.” “Try squishing her little cheeks,” Cody suggests, and Bly launches himself. Cody grapples with him, until Bly plays dirty by tickling him in the one spot every clone is weak to. Cody grumbles and Bly laughs, letting him go. “Okay, but seriously,” Bly says. “You know he likes you too, right?” Cody looks out over the rest of the bar so he won’t have to answer. It’s complicated. He and Obi-Wan have been a lot of things to each other, and moving onto something else, something new, is big. Cody hasn’t done anything like it before, and he isn’t sure how to start. “Cody?” Bly insists. “You know, right?”

Codywan Week 2022 Fic Rec List
Wow, there sure was a heap of works uploaded for @codywanweek this year! (approximately 140 on AO3, by my count) If you’re looking for somewhere to start browsing through all these awesome works, then please see the below list for some of my favourite fics from this year, and give them some love! 💖
Could We Start Again, Please? [2.1k] by @daughterofdungeonbat
Fic summary:
The war has ended, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Commander Cody have become much more serious in their relationship, and they've spent the last day moving Obi-Wan's things into Cody's new apartment. All is going well, until Cody tries to lighten the mood and misses Anakin's frantic attempts to stop him. Or- Obi-Wan has an extra lightsaber. It is not his.
Fic rec: Really loved the character voices here, and the post-war set up and pay off really works well! Has some funny and great lines too
at the horizon’s edge [2.2k] by @inkformyblood
Fic summary:
The bed is larger than Obi-Wan is used to, even now, even after sleeping in it night after night since the day after the war was declared finished. They had made do for so long on the narrow GAR-issued cots or the cramped bunks on the ships that a large bed felt like an indulgence, something to mark the official beginnings of their relationship even though they wound up curled together more often than not. On the floor, beneath the cascade of blankets, Cody’s chest rises and falls beneath Obi-Wan’s hand. There is a hitch to his breathing, an unsteadiness that only grows as Obi-Wan shifts, skating his fingers up over the cool, bare expanse. (Cody has a nightmare, and some things cannot be faced alone.)
Fic rec: emotional and soft and intimate, with some great pose and interactions between codywan
setting sun [2.4k] by @milfmisspiggy
Fic summary:
"Fuck." "You may wear that word out if you aren't careful." "I'll switch it out when something else expresses my feelings better."
Fic rec: BITING AND CHEWING THIS. Absolutely lovely and hot smut with some Tatooine codywan!
Panacea [4k] by @missypup
Fic summary:
Cody has been falling for his General for two years. Two long, war filled years. But he's been able to stay in control of his feelings by just not acknowledging them. But having to share a bed with the man he's been daydreaming about for two years makes Cody so tense Obi-Wan decides to give him a massage to help out. Obi-Wan would certainly be the death of him.
Fic rec: I am always down for codywan massages and Cody getting some love and attention, and this provides in spades! There’s also some very sweet lines here that I loved a lot

Fic summary:
“The Sith has been hunting you and he hasn’t found you,” Ahsoka said. “Please keep it that way. The underground networks were hand-fed this intel, Obi-Wan. He wants you to know. He’s laying a trap.” “Of course he is, my dear,” Obi-Wan sighed. “And he’ll already know I’m coming.” “Obi-Wan, don’t, you’re safe here” Ahsoka pleaded. “Cody wouldn’t want you to walk into a trap just for him.” “No, he wouldn’t,” Obi-Wan agreed. Cody had raised an eyebrow at more than a few of Obi-Wan’s schemes in the past. Yet despite any of his reservations about a given gambit, Cody would join Obi-Wan on the front lines every time, even when he could have led from the fleet and let Obi-Wan clean up his own messes. “But I’m afraid his sound strategic reasoning hasn’t always foiled my plans to single handedly save the day.” OR: Two years into his exile on Tatooine, Obi-Wan comes across something in the desert that sets off a chain of events that may allow Obi-Wan to finally reclaim some peace. But first he'll have to rescue a purge trooper from the grips of the Empire.
Fic rec: I am just ajkhkfjg this one is SO GOOD. How Obi-Wan thinks/feels post O66 is so rich, and his refusal to let Cody go is just so everything aaaa. Great characterisation choices here alongside excellent writing.

My #1 post of 2022
For the touch ask prompts: Codywan and "shielding the other one with their body", please!
codywan, 780 words, post-war no order 66 AU
“Oh Force, Cody, save me.”
Cody doesn’t hesitate. Between one breath and the next he sweeps Obi-Wan into his arms, holding him close against his chest, and turns so his back is facing the centre of the room. Obi-Wan curls up against his chest, tucking his head in close. They’re of a similar enough height that Cody can’t completely hide his partner, but they’re close enough that Obi-Wan can claim plausible deniability that he didn’t see anyone who was looking for him.
“Who is it?” Cody mutters into his ear, feeling his hair tickle against his lips. He’s still not used to this – not to holding Obi-Wan so openly in public, nor the strange fit of the formal wear across his shoulders, or the tang of the exotic food in his mouth. But he’s putting on a straight face, because he’s the most highly ranked clone here – the highly formerly ranked. With the GAR dissolved at the end of the war, he has no military titles any more. That doesn’t stop Senators and governmental leaders and random people on the street from recognising him. The holo that had gone viral of him and Obi-Wan kissing at the announcement of the war’s end, and Cody had only cursed his distinctive facial scar ever since. For once, he’d be more than happy to blend in among the anonymity of his brothers.
“The Senator from Rhydills,” Obi-Wan replies, barely loud enough that Cody can hear him. “He’s coming over – to the dance floor, quickly.”
Cody swings Obi-Wan out among the couples that are twirling around each other, and his mouth twitches in a smile as he hears an annoyed sigh. Obi-Wan takes the lead easily, and Cody focuses on remembering the steps that he had insisted that Obi-Wan teach him the day before. He hadn’t expected to dance, but he likes to account for all possibilities, and it’s paying off now.
“What did he want to talk about?” Cody asks, wondering if Obi-Wan is trying to put the conversation off for a minute or for forever.
“His planet has recently undergone a civil war between the two main religions that make up the majority of the population,” Obi-Wan answers.
“While our war was ongoing?” Cody asks, a little startled.
“Of course,” Obi-Wan snorts. “It never rains, my dear – it pours. But anyhow, he’s intent on resettling as many troopers as possible on his planet. The male population was near destroyed in the fighting, and they’re likely to have a population crisis in the next twenty years if he doesn’t make up for it somehow.”
“With clones?” Cody asks. “But won’t that just give him a new population crisis in fifty years, when everyone’s children are related to each other?”
“A point that I have tried to convey to him three times in the last week,” Obi-Wan sighs. “I think he is very fixated on the current moment. A regiment has resettled on Rhydills, but I think he was hoping for one of the armies instead.”
Cody takes a moment to digest that. In the months since the war ended, there have been many offers from different planets to settle Cody’s brothers. Their contribution to the galaxy notwithstanding, Cody knows that the speed at which they learn, their adaptability, endurance, and tenaciousness of the clones in all areas, not only war, has made them attractive immigrants. Few had been willing to stay on Coruscant once the breadth of the galaxy was made available to them, though they are in the process of setting up a robust online presence to stay connected even as they scatter physically. One tenth of all of his brothers, on one planet? There’s no possibility of that happening.
“So instead of telling him no for a fourth time, you’d prefer to dance with me?” Cody asks. He would love to kiss him, but even if their relationship is public now, he still shies away from any displays that draw attention to it.
“If I were to list the activities I would prefer to avoid and instead dance with you, we would be here next week, my dear,” Obi-Wan says, eyes crinkling as he smiles.
Cody holds his silence as they turn around the floor, though he can feel the heat in his cheeks as they move. “I would be here until next month,” he finally says, and Obi-Wan laughs.
“Well, I shall not attempt to argue with that. If we’re both so invested in our time here, perhaps we should make good use of it?”
“Yes,” Cody agrees, and pays no attention to Senators or politics or the rest of the galaxy – not when he has everything he needs right here, in his arms.

KH OC Week Day 4 - Coliseum
(I'm swapping around the prompts for Day 4-6 for, um, Reasons. Mostly, it's just to have both of my "infodump" entries in a row. Disclaimer: I've never actually played a pen and paper RPG so these would probably be terrible character builds to actually play as.)
Information on fighting styles below:
Ferrum - The Blade is Me
At first glance, Ferrum has a fighting style that shares a lot of similarities with Terra’s. Both have high Strength stats plus a focus on guarding and then countering with powerful attacks using their heavy keyblades, but that’s where the similarities end.
Ferrum is quicker but less tanky than his fellow apprentice, so his moveset relies on a lot more footwork and swordplay in comparison to Terra’s raw power. The timing of Ferrum’s guarding and counterattacks is much more precise, and he favors attacks that stun and/or disorientate his opponents so they have less opportunity to retaliate such as Collision Magnet and Magnet Spiral. His preferred method of immobilizing enemies is to launch them into the air and then hit them with a barrage of combos so they never get the chance to recover their footing. (Obviously, this doesn’t work on opponents capable of flight or teleportation.) Master Hermod wasn’t impressed by this “juggling” strategy until Ferrum could prove its effectiveness in battle.
Defense-wise, Ferrum is quick enough to pull off the Reversal maneuver and dodge behind an enemy to attack. He can also do a similar “backward flash step into a reprisal” move for larger opponents but that’s all he’s got in terms of evasion. He prefers the guard/counter strategy more, especially when on a mission with the other apprentices where he’ll usually have to block attacks directed at them (Brandr and Sophia are still getting the hang of using Barrier, and Virdandi is still insisting that the best defense is just to not get hit).
Over the years, Ferrum’s master has come to appreciate the need for good defensive maneuvers (especially when it comes to protecting one’s friends). However, Master Hermod still favors a highly offense-based style of combat, which makes Ferrum an excellent match for him as an apprentice because Magic is his worst stat. The only two spells he’s capable of casting are Magnet (perfect for getting enemies into melee range) and Spark (light magic is just easier for him to learn as opposed to another elemental spell, which is another way that he and Terra differ.)
Virdandi - Speed Demon
Virdandi’s fighting style focuses on the use of time magic, quick attacks that give her time to cartwheel away and evade any reprisals, and general “hit and run” tactics. Speed is her best stat and defense is her worst, making her the most fragile of glass cannons. Spells that slow down enemy reaction time and increase her own speed fit her strategy but Virdandi specifically likes casting Slow on her enemies so she can watch her target make amusing faces as they recoil from her flurry of strikes (as she casts Haste on herself) and take damage in slow motion. Virdandi tends to wait until she’s low on health to cast Stop because she hates the delay between attacking and the enemy actually taking damage.
At first, these time spells were the only non-melee technique in Virdandi’s moveset. Her reasoning behind this was that if she could defeat her opponent before they had a chance to land a hit then she wouldn’t need to bother learning any defensive moves or healing spells, right? Master Vidar was not impressed but he figured that Virdandi would realize the flaws in her strategy on her own as she kept training.
Post-Timeskip
It may have taken a little longer for her to gain this insight than he’d have liked, as Virdandi can be an incredibly stubborn contrarian. Eventually, she came to accept that her strategy was ill-suited for encounters with multiple targets or enemies immune to time magic, and began to adjust her tactics accordingly. By the time of BBS, she’s learned moves like Drain that give her some HP back and some that have a chance to instant-kill like Zantetsuken (although this isn’t nearly as effective as Terra’s due to her lower strength stat). With Sophia's help, she’s also added Doom to her arsenal of time magic.
To her master’s relief, Virdandi has even learned to cast a few defensive spells like Protect and Shell (if only because they were easier in comparison to learning how to properly counter attacks). Vidar’s efforts to teach her any light magic, however, have not panned out as of yet. (Ventus being a natural at light magic may have some bearing on her disinterest to learn.)
Sophia - Jack of All Trades, Master of None
At the beginning of her apprenticeship, Sophia decided that she wanted to develop a fighting style that had the perfect balance of offense, defense, speed, and magic. Since her interest was always more focused on the academic opportunities that owning a keyblade presented and had exactly zero prior combat experience, Sophia thought a generalist focus would have the most versatility and therefore the most effectiveness.
Master Vor, on the other hand, doubted that specializing in refusing to specialize would work out for Sophia in the long run. However, she held her tongue so as not to discourage her curious apprentice, at first anyway. (Vor figured that Sophia learning a little bit of everything would help her become more self-reliant. And if Sophia just so happened to learn more spells than keyblade techniques because she was assigned several heavy grimoires to read? Complete coincidence, of course.)
Post-Timeskip
Since then, Sophia has learned that studying techniques and planning things out in her head is nothing compared to actual experience on the battlefield. By the time of BBS, she has developed a varied moveset with no glaring weaknesses but no real strengths either. If the obstacle in her path is sentient, her first instinct is always to try and talk things out. When a battle ensues, Sophia is still more likely to use magic than swing her keyblade if only because Strength is her weakest stat. (This tendency made her initial refusal to focus on magic all the more confusing to Vor.)
At the start of a fight, Sophia strategically hangs back and carefully observes her enemy to determine its weaknesses before she takes action to exploit them accordingly. To accomplish this more effectively, she learned Barrier like Aqua and Brandr in order to block attacks without compromising her line of sight. Unlike them, she’s learned how to combine it with a second Reflect spell to create a shield that can take multiple hits due to her high Defense stat and lasts longer at the cost of more MP. Even with this strengthened Barrier, her fighting style is much more effective when she has others with her, a weakness that Master Vor hopes to overcome by pushing Sophia to get stronger and has led to some contention between master and apprentice.
After five years of training, Sophia has become more accustomed to wielding a keyblade. In addition to Barrier, she’s also accurate enough at teleporting behind an enemy when they’re about to strike to use the ability as her only form of dodging attacks. She also knows the base version of every spell (even the most obscure ones that Aqua hasn’t learned yet such as Demi, Frog, Regen, and Warp). The only higher-level spells she can cast are Curaga (necessary as Brandr and Virdandi have little to no healing spells), Graviga, Zero Graviga, and Meteor as well as Doom and Mega Flare after helping Virdandi and Brandr learn them.
Vor’s appeal to Sophia’s insatiable curiosity is not without consequence, however, as her pursuit of the magical arts has led to her learning a few dark spells. She tells herself that it’s purely for academic purposes only; she’d never use those spells on anyone but they should be studied and understood just like any other branch of magic. Yet she would never tell Master Vor or any other keyblade wielder because she knows they wouldn’t understand…
Brandr - I See Fire
Brandr has a surprisingly high Magic stat—higher than Sophia’s and almost on par with Aqua’s—for someone who can barely cast any spells. Perhaps he might have developed a knack for spellcasting if he’d been taught at an earlier age, but no one in Scala ad Caelum would’ve been willing to do so due to his strange condition until Master Urd helped him learn to somewhat manage his power. So far, the only spell Brandr can cast reliably is Barrier (which, to his credit, only two other apprentices can also cast by the time of BBS).
To keep him from growing frustrated with trying to learn too much at once, Master Urd thought it would be best to teach her apprentice how to channel his magic potential in a more indirect manner. Brandr has learned how to imbue his attacks with Fire magic for extra damage but it’s the only element he’s been able to master (ironic since Urd was known for her preference toward Ice magic when she was an apprentice). For enemies immune to fire damage, he’s also learning keyblade techniques that draw their power from magical strength rather than physical (attacks like Explosion, Magic Flash, Last Charge, and Ripple Drive) as Strength is his second-worst stat.
Brandr’s actual worst stat is Speed. As he prefers to keep his enemies at a distance, his slow reaction times don’t affect his combat style much as long as he can keep up a barrage of ranged attacks (moves like Strike Raid and shotlocks) and his opponent can’t move quickly enough to close the gap.  However, it makes his unpredictable visions all the more dangerous because he can’t quickly get to safety until they end while he’s in the midst of a battle. This was the main reason that Master Urd pushed Brandr to learn Barrier but until he learns some offensive magic he’s not allowed to fight on his own yet.
Post-Timeskip
By the time of BBS, Brandr has successfully learned some spells! And not all of them are Fire-based! For starters, he’s mastered all the variants of Barrier (minus Sophia’s reinforced version) plus a fire version. The Mine spells, Blackout, and Stopra (which Virdandi taught him) give him the crowd control options that his moveset was sorely lacking. He can also cast all four tiers of Fire spells (although the cufflink in his coat might be aiding him in casting Firaza), Crawling Fire, Ignite, and (with Sophia’s help) Mega Flare.
The biggest change in Brandr’s combat style is his use of the Sight to predict enemy movements and evade future attacks (although it’s not one hundred percent reliable). Now that he has a better grip on his powers, he feels much more confident moving around the battlefield and relies less on ranged attacks. Despite his success with this technique, Master Urd is still concerned with him relying too much on the Sight as overuse causes awful headaches, and focusing on events outside the current fight if his attention wanders leaves him wide open to attacks while he’s distracted.
Nemus - Light is Not Good
Before he got a keyblade, Nemus found that avoiding/running from his problems was usually a more effective tactic for him than fighting. It’s no wonder that his best stat is Speed (he’s even faster than Virdandi when he’s really trying) and his worst is Strength (but he’s at least a little physically stronger than Sophia due to the circumstances of his childhood). Even after gaining a keyblade, Nemus still tries to avoid fighting as much as possible. This isn’t out of avoidance of conflict like Sophia, however, as Nemus thrives on animosity and competition. It’s just that he prefers verbal sparring to physical as it’s less likely to get his clothes dirty.
When he is forced into combat, Nemus prefers long-range combat and magic over melee attacks. In particular, he’s learned Strike Raid and some of its variants (Circle Raid and Treasure Raid) in order to hit enemies with his keyblade without moving from where he stands. However, he does know Limit Storm and Salvation just in case someone does get in his bubble. Some call his preference of hanging back while in battle to be cowardice or laziness, but he calls it conserving energy.
Master Hoder’s specialty is Light Magic and consequentially all of Nemus’ offense-based spells are of that element: the Spark series of spells and Faith/Holy. However, he’s got his own tricks up his sleeve as he’s also learned Confuse and Vanish to cause chaos on the battlefield. Nemus knows the Cure spells and Esuna but he’s no White Mage-he reserves all of his healing spells for himself. And if those run out, he’s learned Energy Magnet (and Money Magnet, but for different reasons).
Despite his elemental and moral affinity, Nemus is always prepared to fight dirty. After a lifetime of being kicked around by those stronger than him, the idea of honor in battle is a joke to Nemus.

Are you in any video game fandoms?
I... Hmm. I wouldn't consider myself to be a part of any game's fandom, I'm just not immersed enough in any of theirs culture and the like but I actually do really like video games. To share the time I spend playing them with people and be social with chat is much of why I stream after all. (Shameless plug here)
To give an idea of the games I love though: Kingdom Hearts 2 is still one of my all time favorite games and I am actually not half bad at the rando as on Crit (and without Data fights) I can actually get through a seed in usually about 2-3 hours. At least when I finish one... *sweats nervously* However, while I used to be a giant fan for KH, the creative choices in KH 3 finally broke me and while I've been a lot kinder to its storytelling on stream than I was when I first experienced it... Well, let's just say that I'll have to hear and see how good as GAMES future KH titles are before I pick them up where before KH 3 the only reason I hadn't played a game in the series was that I lacked the hardware to do so. I have an incredibly weird relationship with the Soulslike game genre where that I keep trying to do crossovers with them (multiple MLP ones and I began a Sekiro/TOH crossover a while ago that I give no promises to ever update) even though I can have incredibly mixed opinions about their gameplay. I do have to admit that for the fact that I love to explore spaces, nothing beats the Soulslike genre for me, whether it be Fromsoft or elsewhere doing it. My BIGGEST genre of game to play though? Turn based strategy. Whether this be your XCOMS, your deckbuilding Rougelikes like Slay the Spire or a good old fashioned JRPG, I just ADORE me some turn based gameplay. Speaking of, I'll actually end with a HUGE recommendation for an indie game that came out last month called Potionomics. It has a cute little card game that's very Slay the Spire in feel but with some fresh tweaks to it too for haggling, a really good storyline, an incredible cast but the thing that surprises me the most? I just enjoy crafting potions in the game and I find with most games like it, they lose me on the fact that the actual creation of your stock to sell and progress is usually the worst part but I get WEIRDLY INTO IT. It also means it takes me fucking forever to make progress in it and I loved the game so much that a few 5+ hour streams in a row of it physically obliterated me so I'll be getting back to it on stream in due time, I promise. ^^; But yeah, I like video games.

Sorry for sending three submissions in a row, but to give a sense of where their plots fit exactly in “Kingdom Hearts Ripoff: Redux” (I don’t like calling it KH “Revisited” because then it would mean it ties directly to that franchise), in this story there would be multiple story arcs but for now Mandy and Diana either plays out from the beginning or close to the beginning just like the other story arcs with the other heroes and villains, they either join the other heroes in the halfway mark of the story (where Saruman Mystique and Lex are still present) or the penultimate part of the story (where the heroes fight the three villains head on and then Freddy reveals himself). Also they might encounter some of the other members of all three Legions during their adventures.

Thank you for this explanation! I better understand now!

Kyle Hamlett Duo Interview: Into the Grey
Tumblr media
BY JORDAN MAINZER
Sometimes, all it takes is a few instruments, an old house, and two free days to make magic. Such was the case for Tape Diamonds (Arrowhawk), the new album from singer-songwriter Kyle Hamlett and pedal steel extraordinaire Luke Schneider.
Hamlett and Schneider played together for a long time in Lylas, a psychedelic band centered around Hamlett’s compositions that saw a rotating cast of members and last released an album in 2017. Since then, Hamlett started to release finger-picked folk songs under his own name, including his debut solo LP Nowhere Far. Schneider, meanwhile, started to make his name as a session player for the likes of Margo Price, Orville Peck, and Lilly Hiatt, all while becoming a key player in a burgeoning Nashville scene of ambient Americana and receiving loads of critical praise for his 2020 new age pedal steel album Altar of Harmony, released via Third Man Records. Over the winter, Hamlett took advantage of fortunate timing and brought a batch of songs, guitars, harmonica, melodica, percussion instruments, and a Tascam 388 tape recorder to a heat-less house off of Music Row, inviting Schneider to lay his woozy pedal steel and dobro over some compositions that followed the Nowhere Far writing sessions. The result was Tape Diamonds, an appropriately named record that finds breadth in the smallest of moments.
The songs on Tape Diamonds contain roughly the same ingredients: Hamlett’s acoustic guitar, self-described “impressionistic” lyrics, and laid-back, gentle singing, and Schneider’s glistening pedal steel. Yet, each of them give off distinct vibes. Opener “Expected Of” is quietly jubilant, with its jaunty picking and buzzing harmonica. “South”, on the contrary, dabbles in melancholy and nostalgia, similar to the type of Americana that Schneider practices on his solo records and with Nashville Ambient Ensemble. Engineer Jake Davis captures eons of emotion with simple effects, like the trailing echo on Hamlett’s voice on “ZZZ”, fleeting like a ghost of someone’s past. Some of the very song titles reflect the push-pull of Hamlett and Schneider’s paradoxically simultaneous qualities; “Almost Motion” and “Fast As Vaseline” could be tags on Bandcamp attached to Tape Diamonds. Best, the two players revisited existing tunes with the same plaintive, yet adventurous spirit with which they approached Hamlett’s new songs, adapting Lylas’ “Years & Years” and The Smiths’ “Death of a Disco Dancer” to contemporary ears.
Last month, I spoke with Hamlett over the phone from his house in Nashville about Tape Diamonds, working with Schneider again, winter, and his current relationship with The Smiths. Read our conversation below, edited for length and clarity.
Tumblr media
Since I Left You: What made now the right time to finally sit down with Luke and record Tape Diamonds?
Kyle Hamlett: It was a timing thing. Lylas for a long time had been a rotating cast but had settled into a pretty steady lineup around the mid Aughts. A couple of those guys got really busy with other projects, and we couldn’t work on as much Lylas stuff. I didn’t want to call anything I was doing that didn’t involve them “Lylas,” so I gave myself permission to do stuff under my own name, which I had been resisting for a long time, for whatever reason. In doing so, I got back in touch with Luke, who was having a pause in his busy schedule. We just dove in. I wrote those songs right after I had written some other songs that would end up being my first “solo album,” so it was this burst of writing that felt like a bit of liberation and [a realization that,] “I can do this by myself, or I can do this with Luke, and it will be just a two-piece.” [I] was reigning it in, a bit less structured.
SILY: How would you compare working with Luke in a full band versus working with him in just a duo?
KH: That’s a great question. In a larger band, there’s less sonic space to ask for. He does such beautiful, textural things so well, he stretches out more and leans into that. He’s a very sensitive listener, and no matter the setting, doesn’t put anything in that doesn’t need to be there. He’s not a guy that plays just to play. That sensibility remained. But by nature of the sparsity of the duo thing, he had more room to put his psychedelic textures in the forefront.
SILY: Yours and his guitar playing, by virtue of both your playing style and the quality of the instruments themselves, are distinct. The songs that start with you versus the songs that start with him end up with different feelings. How did you decide who would come in first on each song?
KH: Certain songs felt a bit more open. Most of them originated from songs I had written on the guitar and showed to him, so if there was one with a busier finger-picking pattern, it made more sense for me to start it or for us to start together. But if it was a slower, more spacious one, with a deliberate or dragging tempo, it was nice to have a bit of a color there [for Luke to provide] a sonic bed for things to sit in. The tempo and feel of the songs suggested that to us.
SILY: Was there something in general that inspired the lyrics?
KH: It depends on the song. A couple were definitely inspired by specific instances and experiences I’ve had. They’re all kind of impressionistic. I like dream-like lyrics and lyrics that leave room for the listener’s imagination. I don’t want to dictate too much what you’re supposed to be experiencing. A lot of them were born from what the music seemed to suggest. Even the ones based on some real-life experience tend to be abstracted.
SILY: Did the time of year you recorded Tape Diamonds have an effect on the final product? Do you find it a particularly wintry or pastoral record?
KH: I tend to shift. One winter, I’ll want rock and roll, and another winter, I’ll want something soft and acoustic. But we principally recorded it on a very cold day in this old house on Music Row, and Luke literally had a blanket on his pedal steel to keep it in tune. Everything was slipping and weird, and the [heat] was out. That’s definitely infused in my memory. [Tape Diamonds] doesn’t feel inseparable from that to me. I feel like I wrote some of the songs in a summer/fall kind of state. But it definitely works for winter and colder weather.
SILY: The great irony of Chicago winters is that even when it’s bitingly cold, it’s so blindingly sunny. I feel like the shimmery nature of the music will be a good soundtrack to a Chicago winter.
KH: “Shimmery” is a perfect word for Luke’s textures. Chicago winters: I’ve only been there a couple times, and they feel pretty brutal. I’m super impressed whenever I meet somebody who has lived there for a long time. It’s pretty hard not to be beaten down by the consistent cold.
SILY: There’s no such thing as bad weather--just bad coats!
KH: I like that.
Tumblr media
SILY: Did you have a general approach to the sequencing of the record, or at least to groups of a couple tracks that sounded good back-to-back?
KH: We were thinking of the flow of everything, sonically more so than thematically or lyrically or with any kind of arc. It was just about what seemed like a good start, what seemed like a good way to follow that up, and what the next song needed. It was intuitive. I remember sending it to Luke, and he had one or two suggestions, but it was something we both agreed on pretty quickly. We can sometimes have very different opinions and know what we like or don’t like. I was surprised we agreed so quickly.
SILY: I really like “ZZZ”, which is a very fleeting song, even in terms of the trailing on your voice. To follow it with something as expansive as “Night Nurse” was very effective.
KH: Thanks. Some of them are a little more expansive and long, and we didn’t want too many of them in a row, or some of the shorter ones [in a row, for that matter.]
SILY: What’s your and Luke’s relationship with The Smiths, in the past and now, and how did you approach the cover?
KH: We both have historically liked The Smiths quite a bit. I remember in one of our first conversations, I was very much responding to Morrissey’s lyrics and poetry and vocal approach, and Luke was very into Johnny Marr’s radical and unconventional guitar arrangements and structures. We were geeking out. We bonded over them for a long time. A friend’s wife told me years ago she thought Lylas should cover “Death of a Disco Dancer”, and it never happened. For some reason, I thought it would be fun to do that now since we were playing together again--Luke was playing pretty regularly with Lylas at that point. It was fun to cover the Lylas song “Years & Years”, too. That was one of the first songs Luke played pedal steel on, so it was fun to have a reunion on that one. But back to The Smiths: I can’t fully speak for Luke with where he’s at with them now. Morrissey is obviously a problematic, opinionated, toxic guy in some ways. But the poetry and music in that song in particular still speak to a higher truth for me most of the time.
I heard somebody in an interview refer to Woody Allen as “the late Woody Allen.” I thought, “Are we going to have to start referring to Morrissey that way, too?”
SILY: Why did you release “Expected Of” as the first single?
KH: That was one of the last ones I wrote. I wrote that one and “New Orbit” after the initial reacquaintance of myself and Luke. I wrote it in a burst of inspiration by how easy and fun it was to play with Luke. Because it was the newer of them, it was more exciting to me than some of the songs I was thinking about for a while. There’s also an immediacy to it, which I like. It doesn’t have pedal steel, so in a way it’s a little unrepresentative of what you get from the rest of [Tape Diamonds], but I like that. It sets you up to be surprised. It’s not an encapsulation of everything. It [also] sounded great to me. [Engineer] Jake Davis got great guitar, voice, dobro, and percussion sounds.
SILY: “New Orbit” is one of a few song titles on here that get at the vibe of the record, the contradictory nature of the record being both expansive and immediate. The other are “Almost Motion” and “Fast as Vaseline”. They’re paradoxical and appropriate.
KH: I like paradoxes in words and phrases and sounds. It’s nice to think about the context of just the sound. We’re shooting for something a little more extensive and mysterious. One of my favorite things is to have a lyric almost immediately contradict itself. I’m thinking of The Beatles’ “Revolution”, when John Lennon sings, “You can count me out--in.” It goes along with especially what he’s saying, such a bold anthemic statement immediately undercut in a way that somehow gives it more gravity to me. That’s something I’ve always responded to. I very rarely trust absolutes. The grey areas are always more interesting. Contradictions are more thought-provoking to me.
SILY: What’s the inspiration behind the album title?
KH: Funny story. We recorded [Tape Diamonds] on Tascam 388. I actually had a little reel of tape I took to the first session, [thinking to myself,] “This album’s gonna live on a little piece of tape.” If we botched the take, we would record over that take. A couple times, if we did the song a little faster, when we got to the end, there would be a little residual bit from the previous take. Are you familiar with the musical term “diamonds,” where it’s just a big open hit, like, “Dunnnnnn”? [Because] there are a couple songs that end and then end again. The one that made it onto the record is “Rocky 13″. You hear it end and then a little flash from the previous take. We kind of just coined those “Tape Diamonds,” and I liked the phrasing of it. It’s also a contradiction, if you think of tape being very analog, sticky, visceral, and tactile, and diamonds being a more glamorous, regal, hard thing. It’s a neat, evocative phrase to me. It’s funny it was an in-joke that started during the sessions.
SILY: What’s the story behind the cover art?
KH: That’s from a photo my wife took. She’s a visual artist, and when I have a project nearing completion, I start talking to her about it. She’s usually very familiar with the material and where it’s headed. I don’t think I had any ideas, really. She had taken the photograph and asked what I thought about it. I showed Luke, and he and I had talked about it a bit. He liked a lot of private press new age LPs and wanted a sensibility that felt a bit like that, so he thought this was perfect. Another thing we could have not landed on so easily, but something about that photo hit the right nerve for all of us.
SILY: What else is next for you?
KH: There’s nothing left over from this session, as far as I recall, but I’d love to do more with Luke. We haven’t begun that process yet, but I have a couple songs I’d like to do with him. I’d also like to open it up to more 50/50 collaboration if that’s cool with him. If he’s making his own ambient pedal steel music at the time, he might not have energy for it. But if he’s in the zone, it might be cool for us to build up the soundscapes together and have it less of me coming in with my song and adding his beautiful textures to it. It would be fun to have it happen a little more in the moment, in the room. We’ll see what actually shakes out.
SILY: Anything you’ve been listening to, watching, or reading lately you’ve enjoyed?
KH: I’ve been catching up on Stranger Things. I’m a Kate Bush fan and am thrilled [“Running Up That Hill”] is in most peoples’ ears right now. Hopefully, that will make the human race more positive and understanding people, having that little bit of cosmic heaven in their ear. But I haven’t reached that season yet; I’m at the end of season 3. I’m reading Carl Jung’s autobiography right now, Memories, Dreams, Reflections, which is incredibly fascinating. I’m listening to a lot of Bryan Ferry, Roxy Music, Robyn Hitchcock, and The Cleaners From Venus. Midnight Cleaners has been on heavy rotation; “Only a Shadow” is a timeless piece of music.

Golden Gryphon Garret (say that 10 times real fast) in Alinor.
Wow. That is really dark.
Like the St. Delyn Penthouse in Vivec, this room is just too large to properly decorate with just 30 slots. Someday I’ll buy the larger townhouse in Alinor and turn this into a very dark storage closet or something.

MC Monday - Christmas Camera Roll - Tobias & Casey Edition
Tumblr media
Photos from their first Christmas together.
The first five photos are all from home. Now, we all know these two can't keep their hands off each other, so there was a whole lot of loving going on because they were spending Christmas itself at his Mother's home in DC. So they had their own private celebration(s) before they left.
More below...
They were in DC for three days and they played tourist the first day, taking in the decorations and having a snowball fight on the National Mall.
At Vivian's (Tobias's Mom), everything is a little next level, so it was a formal affair. On Christmas eve she hosted a party for about thirty of her closest friends and family members. She was elated to show the couple off, especially since Casey was her nearly 40-year-old son's first serious girlfriend. Casey realized too late that wearing a white gown was not a wise idea, it gave Mrs. Carrick far too many ideas.
Casey couldn't wait to get him out of his tux, which is why Tobias is a little disheveled in the center photo in the bottom row.
Even Christmas morning was a formal affair. The couple was all dressed up for the fancy brunch and exchanging gifts.
Tumblr media
Tobias really wanted their first Christmas together to be a quiet celebration with just the two of them, but he had already promised his Mom he'd be there this year since he worked the year before. To compensate he celebrated "Christmas" with her on their day off a week before.
Christmas morning was spend under the tree and then the dressed up in the matching Stitch pajamas he bought them. They took a stroll around a snowy Boston and there was one more gift for Casey under the tree when they arrived home. The night was capped off with a romantic dinner for two (he cooked, of course.)
DC was fancier and, while he would have rather been alone, it was nice to show his girl off to his family who were all astounded he found someone who could put up with him for so long. He pretty much ran around with a camera documenting their days there, though most of the pictures were Casey.

Sokai Day Fic 1: True Love’s Kiss(es)
So yes, I am a Classics/ancient history blog, and this is obviously super different from the content I normally post on this blog. Please forgive me, but I’ve recently become OBSESSED with Kingdom Hearts and I have nowhere else to post this stuff at the moment. So please forgive me, normal content will resume soon!
Anyway, as I said I just started playing the KH games for the first time this summer and it’s been so much fun. And seeing all the amazing stories and artwork in this fandom has inspired me to write some stuff too. Anyway, I’m Holly, and I hope y’all enjoy :)
--------------------------
True Love’s Kiss(es)
‘Ugh!’ Kairi groaned, unceremoniously setting down the basket she held in her hands. ‘I forgot that when you pick apples, you have to actually carry them all back, too!’
‘Your basket’s not even half full, Kairi,’ Sora remarked, ‘and we’ve only just started!’
She grinned. ‘Well then, it’s a good thing I have a strong, manly boyfriend to help me carry all of these.’
He could hardly argue with that. Sora feigned displeasure by rolling his eyes and letting out a dramatic groan, which made Kairi giggle. But then he walked over to her, grabbing one of the basket’s handles as she grabbed the other, and the pair made their way deeper down the rows of apple trees. They could hear the distant shouts and laughs of their friends echoing through the orchard as they went. Apparently, Twilight Town– a world basically in perpetual autumn–  was known for its fall festivities, including its legendary apple orchards. Once they’d visited the orchards, the gang hoped Remi would help them make apple pies, apple cider, and all sorts of goodies during their visit. To that end, the group had decided to break up into teams in order to pick as many apples as they could carry. Today, Sora and Kairi were paired up. But Sora knew that if they only returned with a measly half basket of apples, the others would surely tease them, accuse them of slacking off.
They wouldn’t be totally wrong, Sora thought with a grin. Sure, Kairi was determined to focus on their task: she was deep in concentration, examining each apple carefully before deciding to place it in her basket. Sora, on the other hand, was much more determined to get Kairi off task. It wasn’t that Sora didn’t want to help out, but this was an opportunity for him and Kairi to spend some time alone– that was a temptation greater than any fruit, in Sora’s world.
Kairi set her sights on a shiny red apple that hung high on a nearby tree. She stood up on her tiptoes, making adorable little noises as she tried to grab it. Sora was staring intently, but not at the apple: Kairi’s form was stretched out in front of him as she reached high over her head, accentuating her curves, and Sora was mesmerized. It was only when she said his name that he snapped out of his trance: ‘Sora,’ she called out, not taking her eyes off the fruit, ‘would you come over and help me with this one? You should be able to–’
Kairi shrieked as Sora, having silently moved behind her, wrapped his arms around her legs and hoisted her up onto his shoulder.
‘Tall enough now?’ he asked casually.
Her surprised squeak was the only reply Kairi could muster. Once she’d successfully picked the apple, Sora released her hips. He held her by the waist as her body slid down his until she landed gently on the ground. Even in the autumn chill, Sora could feel his cheeks burning.
Having regained some of her composure, with a giggle, Kairi said, ‘Guess we make a pretty good team, huh?’ before she turned to the next tree. Sora tried to hide it by replying with a level ‘Absolutely,’ but inside, he was beaming: watching the effect he had on Kairi just never got old for him– but given how hard he had to try to appear cool and unfazed, it wasn’t like he was much better than she was.
Now that he’d had his fun, Sora walked up next to Kairi to help out. The pair picked apples side by side, happily chatting and admiring each other's finds, and over time, their basket filled with bright red apples. While they worked, something about the orchard nagged at Sora’s mind, but he couldn't place it. As he studied a large, blood-red apple in his hands, it finally clicked.
‘All these apples remind me of Snow White,’ Sora remarked. ‘Aqua told me how Snow White’s evil stepmother tried to kill her by getting her to eat a poisoned apple. The dwarves thought she was dead, so they placed her in a beautiful glass casket,’ Sora recalled, his eyes still fixed on the apple. He found himself absentmindedly tracing the spot on his chest where a scar marred the skin over his heart: the permanent reminder of his sacrifice for Kairi– well, his first one, anyway.
‘But she wasn’t dead,’ Sora continued, thought bleeding into memory. ‘She was asleep, and she couldn’t wake up…’
‘Until her true love saved her.’
That broke Sora out of his reverie. He looked up to find Kairi already gazing at him, her eyes soft and sincere. Sora replied, ‘Yeah… Reminds me of another princess I know.’
Did she really mean…?  They’d talked about their first adventure numerous times before, but she’d never said it like that.
‘I would have killed for a nice bed to sleep on,’ she continued. ‘You and Riku took me on quite a journey– napping peacefully in a meadow sounds pretty good to me,’ Kairi said with a grin.
A breeze drifted through the orchard, rustling the leaves over their heads. ‘I remember your dad telling us all those old fairy tales when we were kids,’ Sora said. ‘After all the adventures we’ve had… it’s strange to think we sort of became one ourselves.’
‘They’re not always as fun to live as they are to hear…’ Kairi remarked, almost to herself, ‘when you don’t know if there’ll be a happy ending after all.’ Her eyes grew distant, drifting aimlessly down the row of apple trees.  ‘I… I still remember waking up at Hollow Bastion, seeing that Keyblade in your chest… And then how you–’ she started, but then faltered, unable to bring herself to say what came next.
Sora gently placed a hand on her shoulder, turning her to face him. She still seemed lost in thought, not meeting his eyes. ‘I know what you mean. But we did get one, didn’t we, Kairi? It took a while, and we’ve had to find each other again and again, but now you’re here. And thanks to you, I’m here. We’re finally together, and nothing is ever going to change that. That’s the best ‘happily ever after’ I could have wished for.’
The pair were alone, the trees standing sentry around them, but his voice grew softer all the same: these words were just for her. ‘All that doesn’t really matter anymore,’ Sora continued. ‘What I mean is… what matters is that we’re here now. That means it was all worth it.’ He took her hand, interlacing their fingers. ‘Back at Hollow Bastion, when I saw your eyes open just before mine closed, when I knew your heart was safe… it was worth it, Kairi.’
She finally looked up at him. Sora hoped his eyes conveyed the sincerity of his words: It had all been for her– and it had all been worth it, every moment. Every time Sora got to see her sweet smile, got to hear her lovely laugh, it was worth it. And now, he wasn’t just connected to her across the worlds by promises and oaths– if he wanted to find Kairi, all Sora had to do was reach for her hand. How was that not a dream come true?
A small smile forming on her lips, Kairi gave him a look of such love and gratitude that Sora knew she felt the same. ‘It just makes our time together now even more precious to me,’ she finally said, giving his hand a gentle squeeze. ‘I’m never going to take this for granted.’
Sora decided then to gather her into his arms and bring her close, her head resting in the crook of his neck, his cheek on her soft hair. ‘You know,’ he started after a pause, ‘I have to admit, when I heard Snow White’s story, I got a bit jealous.’
Kairi pulled back just enough to shoot him a quizzical look. ‘Jealous?’
‘Yeah, of Prince Florian. All he had to do to wake up Snow White and save the day was kiss her– pretty nice deal, if you ask me,’ Sora explained. Kairi smiled, but her eyes were still a bit sad. So he continued, a grin spreading across his face, ‘Don’t know why I didn’t think to try that first…’
‘Oh, Sora!’ Kairi giggled, giving Sora a playful smack on his arm, her face brighter. ‘What, does that mean you thought about kissing Ven at some point, too?’ she countered.
‘I was getting so desperate to find the Power of Waking, I just might have!’ Sora replied, and they both laughed again. Keeping one arm around Kairi, he took a bite from the apple still in his hand. It was crisp and fresh, and amazingly sweet– it was just right, like everything else in this moment.
Suddenly, with a smirk on her face, Kairi plucked the half-eaten apple from Sora’s hand. She lifted the fruit to her lips, holding Sora’s gaze as she took a large bite next to where he’d just bitten, a small drop of juice running down her chin as she chewed. All Sora could do was watch her, hopelessly mesmerized. It was bold, yet playful– Kairi to a T. Before Sora’s brain could fully resume normal functioning, Kairi said, feigning innocence, ‘What? Isn’t sharing fruit kind of our thing? It’s no paopu fruit, but still…’
Staring into her eyes, the radiant sunset bathing them in soft, warm light, Sora grew bold himself: They’d spent so long in silence, so long apart, why waste any time? He’d fought so hard to find her, to come back to her, over and over again. She was right here– if he wanted to kiss her, what on earth was there to consider? Sora reached a hand forward to cup her cheek, wiping the juice from the corner of her lip with his thumb. Kairi let the gentle pull of his thumb part her lips. ‘It is pretty good,’ Sora said, ‘but… you definitely taste better.’ And with that, he lowered his head and kissed her. He heard the sound of the apple landing on the ground, utterly forgotten, as Kairi’s arms wound around his neck.
And Sora had to admit, kissing Kairi felt pretty magical– Maybe those fairytales were onto something after all.
But of course, the distant sound of Aqua, Ven, and Riku calling out in search of them forced the pair to break their kiss, albeit begrudgingly. Sora expected Kairi to step away, pick up her basket, maybe call out to their friends– but she didn’t. She stayed as she was in Sora’s arms, one hand resting on his shirt, over the scar. Sora could feel his heartbeat racing under her touch. When she looked up at him again, something in her eyes was different. Still happy, but mixed with something else– not just happiness, but a determination to be so.
‘This is a pretty large orchard,’ Kairi remarked, her eyes bright. ‘Our friends probably won’t find us for a little while longer…’
‘We’d better not make them wait too long, or Axel will use his chakrams to–’
Kairi grabbed Sora’s hoodie with both hands and pulled him back down to her lips. For a moment, Sora stood frozen, eyes wide with shock. But as she melted into him, his eyes fluttered closed and he wound his arms around her, each kiss between them less ‘Fairy Godmother Friendly’ than the last. Traditionally, in all those fairytales, the heroes only ever got one ‘True Love’s Kiss.’ Sora considered himself the luckiest prince of all time– he had a never ending supply.
Twilight Town was always just that– hanging in perpetual dusk. So Sora really didn’t know how long he and Kairi spent like that, lost in laughter and kisses and caresses beneath the trees. But once their friends’ voices grew dangerously close, Sora and Kairi managed to untangle themselves, wiping swollen lips, readjusting ruffled clothing, and fixing disheveled hair (not that Sora’s hair had been tidy in the first place– and Kairi burst out laughing when she realized her attempts to smooth it didn’t do much good, either). As Kairi called out to their friends, Sora picked up her basket, now full of delicious looking apples, and the pair began to head back toward the orchard entrance. They probably hadn’t gathered the most apples– and he was sure their friends would point that fact out–  but Sora didn’t care one bit. He wouldn’t have traded this day for anything.
‘Hey Kairi?’ Sora said as they walked, ‘For the record, if I’m ever in a fruit induced coma– or any other kind of coma, really– feel free to make out with me, in order to revive me. Thought I should say so, you know, just in case.’
‘Oh, really?’ She teased back. ‘I’ll make sure to tell Donald– you always complain he never uses Curaga when you need it.’
‘What? No! Ew, gross!’ Sora blanched as Kairi dissolved into laughter. But when his eyes found hers again, he couldn’t help but smile.
As her giggles died out, she replied, 'Okay, I’ll remember that… But that doesn’t mean you can go throw yourself into danger so I’ll kiss you better!’
‘I can’t help it– when you kiss me, I feel like I can do anything,’ Sora answered simply. Kairi’s eyes widened at his remark, and she ducked her head as her cheeks bloomed pink. Sora beamed. He may have been laying it on her thick, but Sora wasn’t lying: He had true love on his side– the most powerful magic of all.

KH Among Us
Vanitas:Hey Ventus, did you do your stupid-
Ventus:*holding a knife*.....
Sora:*dead*
Vanitas:......
Report!
Ventus:Vanitas killed Sora and vented!!!!
Vanitas:Don’t listen to his lies! He’s an imposter! A traitor among us.
Ventus:How could you accuse me of killing a person.
Chirithy:*watching silently*
Riku:Vote Vanitas off!
Everyone votes him off and launch him out. He can faintly see Ventus smiling and waving.
Vanitas:I’m never reporting a body again.....
xxxx
Roxas:*doing wires* (What are the odds it was Vent-)
Ventus:*crawls out of vent* (Sorry Isa, should’ve went l-).....
Roxas:.....*sweating*
Ventus:I can explain.
Roxas starts sprinting out of the door and runs past Namine.
Namine:Why are you-
Roxas:It’s Ven!
Namine:Oh....
Namine starts running with him runs all the way to button but the reactor starts melting down. Ventus is nowhere in sight.
Roxas:Namine, go left. I’ll go r-agh!
Namine:*stabs him*Sshhhh...
Roxas:Of course!
She casually skips towards a vent and goes on about her day. Roxas becomes a ghost and looks at his fallen friends.
Saix:They’re totally going to win...
Sora:I didn’t even get to play. Ventus went right for me!
Roxas:Aqua can figure this out. She’s smart.
Report!
Xion:Aqua’s dead near the left panel...
Ghost Aqua:....
Sora:Ventus?
Aqua:I feel so betrayed...
xxxx
Axel:Who do you think is doing all of this?
Xion: *across the room*.....
Axel:Me!?
Xion:One of your titles is assassin.
Axel:Pfft have I ever hurt a person on my si- okay... yeah I’m suspicious. My track record of hurting coworkers is incredibly high, but it’s not me.
xxxxx
Vanitas:Ten munny says Riku dies next.
Sora:Riku would never let down his gaurd! He’ll win.
Namine:R-Riku? I’m scared, can we stick together please?
Riku:Of course! Where’s your task?
Namine:Med Bay.
Sora slowly pulls out his munny pouch as he watches the sterilization doors close the two in a room. A second later, Riku’s ghost appears face palming.
Vanitas:Did you even consider for a second that you were being played?
Riku:Shut up.
Aqua:They need two more kills.
Saix:It’s about to be one.
He points to Terra, who’s trying to swop his card; completely unaware of Ventus who just hopped out a vent. The boy slowly walks up to his closest friend, then swipes the card for him.
Terra:Thanks.
Ventus:Anytime!
Aqua:He’ll kill me but not Terra!?
Vanitas:Hahahaha!
Riku:Maybe he can’t bring himself to be completely evil?
Ventus:Yeah so I saw Lea vent but can’t find a body. If I press the button will you vote for him?
Terra:Oh you caught him!? Good job, he’s going down.
Kh ghost: Terra! You gullible-
xxxx
Ghost Axel watches with everyone as Siax pats his back. Vanitas is cackling his head off while the others are yelling at Terra, even though he can’t hear them. Except for Sora. He’s watching Kairi finish her tasks with Xion.
Kairi:You know, I’m starting to think Vanitas wasn’t lying.
Xion:Yeah, but Terra is alive. It could be him using Ven?
Kairi:If I trust that you’re not an imposter, then that only leaves Namine left. Where is she?
Xion:Guarding the button.
.......
Kairi:Xion, there’s three innocent, two imposters. If we’re fine, then that means one is at the button and the other-
The door opens behind them. Namine and Ventus casually walk in and lock the door. They pull out knives.
Namine:We win.
Kairi:All you needed was Terra! Why us!?
Ventus:We wanted to try to get everyone that looked alike; a personal challenge!
Namine:Yep! There can only be one. *smiles*
Kairi and Xion:That’s so cruel!!!
Both of them die and become ghost. They silently join the rest of the friends watch take out all the trash and carry the oxygen containers until the screen fades to black.
Terra:Huh? Oh..we lost? Well, better luck next time, right guys? *smiles*
KH crew mates:*physically can’t stay mad at him* Sigh....better luck next time.
Terra:Oh by the way. Ventus, who was the final imposter?
Ventus:Kairi...
Terra:I knew it!
Kairi:But I- I’ll kill him! Let me get imposter next round! *reaching Ventus*
Ventus:Imposter twice in a row? How greedy can you get Kairi.
Namine:Yeah, give us a turn.
Kairi:*frustrated screaming*
