Hey friends, I made a Zine celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Wonder Years' album The Greatest Generation! It includes 13 mini-essays, one for each song on the record, each by a different writer. Contributors include some of my best friends and favorite writers (including Tumblr users @angrypedestrian @explosionshark & @whatthehelliswrongwithhim) as well as a few names you may recognize from music criticism circles such as Absolutepunk's Drew Beringer and Endless Scroll's Miranda Reinert.
If you want a free copy (while supplies last!), please request one on the following link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScn3Ka2d75ujYbrPvZ82IQzoreqz1QDBCjyMZZaAzpferNETg/viewform?usp=sf_link
Thanks! Spencer

Clean, Clean — The Buggles
The Mind Electric — Miracle Musical (esp. Michael Guy Bowman’s cover)
Moonsetter — Toby Fox
The Duck Song 4 — Bryant Oden (yes, really)

13 Books!
What’s up readers?! How about a little show and tell? Answer these 13 questions, tag 13 lucky readers and if you’re feeling extra bookish add a shelfie! Let’s Go!
1) The Last book I read:
Last book I finished was Notre-Dame de Paris by Victor Hugo
2) A book I recommend:
Here's one, The Novel Cure by Ella Berthound & Susan Elderkin. It's a book you use to find what book you should read.
3) A book that I couldn’t put down:
The Postman Always Rings Twice by James M. Cain
4) A book I’ve read twice (or more):
Notre-Dame de Paris by Victor Hugo. There's quite a few others, but that's the latest one.
5) A book on my TBR:
The Brothers Karamazov is perpetually on my TBR list. Maybe this year will be the year I finally cross it off.
6) A book I’ve put down:
The Sleeper Wakes by H. G. Wells. I love Wells, but I just didn't dig this one. I need to try it again, after nearly twenty years. The other one is Food of the Gods, also by Wells. I've finished several of his other novels, I swear.
7) A book on my wish list:
Homer's Iliad translated by Emily Wilson. Just waiting for the paperback.
8) A favorite book from childhood:
There was some book about a baby raccoon being scared of something in the water until his mom explains it's his reflection. I liked that one a lot as a kid.
9) A book you would give to a friend:
I guess whatever book they asked for.
10) A book of Poetry or Lyrics you own:
The Complete Works of Lord Byron
11) A nonfiction book you own:
Ghosts in the Middle Ages by Jean-Claude Schmitt
12) What are you currently reading:
Wild: Tales from Early Medieval Britain by Amy Jeffs
13) What are you planning on reading next?
I'm thinking some science fiction. I'm thinking either The Left Hand of Darkness by Le Guin, Dune Messiah by Herbert, or Tales from the Dying Earth by Jack Vance.
Bonus Round Shelfie?
Please ignore the clothes and dust.

Rules: List seven comfort films and tag seven people
Truthfully I can only think of two because I don't watch a lot of movies. They're both movies I watched over and over as a lonely teen, and even though I haven't seen them in a while they're what I associate with comfort.
Field of Dreams
Transformers: The Movie (the 1986 animated movie, not the later stuff) - I had terrible insomnia as a teen, and watched segments of this every night.
Tagging @belphegor1982 @hesmiledlikeaweatherman @purplecyborgnewt @theworrierqueen @kenais-posts @one-rogue-army @pivitor
As always, don't feel obliged to do this, and feel free to do it even if not tagged!

The timing is finally right and I can respond to a tagged prompt!! @explosionshark tagged me asking for 5 songs I'm into recently, so let's see if I can actually remember any of them. I finally subscribed to a streaming service (Apple), so I've been digging into all sorts of random music corners I don't normally spend too much time in, so a couple of these picks are real big, obvious songs, but fall under the category of I don't think I've ever listened to this on headphones before??? Which is a very particular fun kind of novelty. For me.
GODDAMMITALL by The Wonder Years The Greatest Generation is ten years old and I am consequently made of dust. But this b-side that TWY unearthed and re-recorded like the two tracks they did celebrating The Upsides and Suburbia, I've Given You All..., is honestly probably one of the top five TGG tracks, which is saying something. TGG is my (and MANY others') favorite wonder years record, and this song fits in so squarely that I almost lose my mind every time I think about it. Like come on "I'm a sweater that you've given to Goodwill, or lied about and sent to the landfill" is a LINE. Also I am going to rip my vocals cords to shreds screaming the GODDAMMITALLs on that last chorus when I see them in the fall. Def Leppard-Photograph File this under one of those "I never listened to this song with headphones for the first 33-ish years of my life" songs. The production on this song is just fucking insane. It's SO tight. I recently read a theory breakdown of this song that Stereogum did, which I only understood maybe 50% of, but even with that 50%, I learned so much about why this song works the way it does. It is perhaps THE perfect hair metal song. IT JUST SOUNDS SO GOOD GUYS. THE ARPEGGIO GUITAR IN THE CHORUS.
The Pharcyde-Passin' Me By Another one of the I never listened to this on headphones before songs. I was introduced to this track via the Aggressive Inline video game soundtrack in the early 2000s (1. I know of ancient extreme sports video games you have only dreamed of and 2. yes I am one of the whitest people alive on earth). I always enjoyed it, but I had no context for it, and was just much more walled off from hip-hop when I was a young teen. But this song fucking slaps and the sampling in it is unparalleled. And the "my dear, my dear, my dear, you do not know me but I know you very well" verse lights up my brain in the best fucking way.
Hot Mulligan-The Song Is Called What It's Called I was always fine with Hot Mulligan, and enjoyed a lot of their songs, but never really got them. I am just too old and decrepit, and not young and hip enough to listen to the number 1 hot new band, but with this record I finally got it. Or HM is old enough now and has been at this long enough to make something more appealing to my ears, which is obviously what every band should strive to do. But this song in particular does it for me. It's mostly a road song, which I have a love for, but it just feels like a particular distillation of everything this band has been building towards their whole career. Why Should I Watch is a special one, and I hope whatever legacy they leave remembers it that way.
Bad Operation-What Keeps Us Moving This. Is. New. Tone. There's no other band out there doing what Bad Operation is doing. They coined a term for a new wave of ska, one that is truly diverse, accepting, and engaged in away it hasn't been since 2 tone in the 70's. And they did it while making the BEST ska of this decade, if not this century. They are my favorite current ska band, melding so many influences, remaining political in a direct way that still integrates with their music, and just making shit you can DANCE to. Also this is A Summer Song, fucking rock this shit at your next barbecue! No one is doing what Bad Operation is doing, I hope they make 75 more records, and also that I can finally see them live soon.
Tagging anyone who wants to do this, but @unsungfury, @pivitor, @whatthehelliswrongwithhim, if y'all want to, I am particular interested in your answers!

Rules: shuffle your 'on repeat' playlist & post the first ten tracks, then tag ten people~ (I’m bending the rules here 🫣)
I don’t use Spotify and don’t have much preference for a playlist so I based my answers on my current week’s frequently played Pandora radio titled (Oh Wonder Radio so it’ll be biased but they’re one of my favs).

I’m tagging my pals here. Feel free to join or not, I just thought of you all first :)
@yourfaceislovely @manicpossumdreamgirl @sunsetcocoamuffin @lewishamil10n @pivitor
You can just screenshot your playlist if you’d like to participate <3 I was feeling a bit creative today so I made a graphic for my songs.

belphegor1982 replied to your text post: I'm sorry you had back problems 😬 I'm glad Lenny's doing better, at least! (And I love that Garbage song, too 💜)
Thank you!  Yeah, my back was so bad that I couldn't lie down or sleep, which wasn't much fun.  It isn't nearly so bad now, but I've been taking pain meds (just Aleve, nothing risky) and muscle relaxants and am kind of terrified of how things are going to be once those are finished.  One day I felt really good and decided to stop taking them, and soon regretted it :P
Lenny goes up and down.  Today things were good for a while, and they’ve just taken a turn for the worse tonight.  I really don’t know what to do.
pivitor replied to your text post: I'm so sorry things have been chaotic and rough with Lenny. Sending good vibes your way!
Thank you very much, and we can definitely use them :)  Hope all's well with you!

wait actually @pivitor this is as good a time as any to tell the story of one of my most surreal uber experiences i.e. anime juan
one time i was uber pooling from my friend’s dorm to my dorm--honestly a stupidly short distance to uber, literally 15 minutes walking distance--but it was pouring rain and i didn’t have a coat or anything and i did have my laptop on me, and i was like “$4 is a reasonable price to pay so that my laptop does not accrue water damage”.
anyways.  i get in the car.  there’s another girl there already.  the uber driver, wanting to make small talk, asks us if either of us watch netflix shows.  “not really”, says the other girl.
“i don’t have a netflix subscription,” i said, because i don’t.  “but do you watch any netflix shows?”
“actually, yes”, says my uber driver.  “i watch this thing, but you’ve probably never heard of it.  it’s called.... [drumroll] anime.”
“oh haha,” i said.  i’m a little shookened by this turn of events.  “i have heard of anime.  what is ... what is your favorite anime?”  my uber driver informs me that his favorite anime is one piece.  “uhh, like the one with the pirates?” i say.
my uber driver is delighted.  “oh my god, you really do know what anime is!”  (i sure do, juan).  he starts getting confessional on me.  “it’s just.... it’s just so filled with emotion.  i think people probably judge me for it, but i can’t help it .... what do you watch?”
[me, a person who honestly doesn’t watch that much television, but what she does watch consists of at least 75% anime, but who is now also unwilling to say that]: uhh... i watch... cartoons.  i’ve watched gravity falls.
“oh, gravity falls!” says my uber driver.  “i’ve watched that too!”  “and so have i”, says the other girl in the car, who has been witnessing our conversation in silence.   anyways, then juan asks what my major is, and i tell him i’m double majoring in statistics and creative writing.
“what’s creative writing”, juan asks.  “they’re separate majors” i say, assuming he got confused b/c of the double major.  “no, like, what is it?” ... “umm”, i say, not having foreseen this development.  “i write, like, stories.”
juan has an epiphany.  “that’s why you don’t watch TV!!!  you’re the one writing TV!!!!”  i tell him i guess so.  at this point, he tries to drop off the other girl in the uber, but it turns out that she’s inputted her address wrong and isn’t home yet.  he promises to drop her off after he’s dropped me off, but unforch the app doesn’t have a function to track that so he says he’ll just mark that he’s dropped her off.
he, reasonably, wants to assure the other girl in the uber that he isn’t a creep who’s going to kidnap her or anything, so he’s like, “don’t worry, i’m legit!”...
...”actually, i’m a narcotics officer!” and then.  he whips out his badge.  and flashes it at us.
that concludes my tale of like a truly wild, like, (recall how short this drive was) probably 6 minutes of a tuesday night i had sometime last year.  thank you for reading.

belphegor1982 replied to your text post: "cutting its nose to spite its face" - *snort*, what a perfect way to phrase it. It's my understanding that LJ doesn't host images (you have to put a link if you want to show an image in your post, so if the original image goes away the linked image is pulled down too) but DW is slightly better in that respect (although the image hosting is limited). Still, not a bad idea to remind people of other options. And Pillowfort should be up and running again before the weekend!
LJ still has image hosting, I believe (or at least my photos are still up from the old days), but they're shrunk down quite significantly and probably not much use for posting art or scans.  And sadly Photobucket has all but imploded unless you pay for the service.  I'll experiment with posting via Imgur, but will admit that the sole reason I migrated to Tumblr back in 2010 was because I could just upload images directly to the site and didn't have to muddle with Photobucket code.  Imgur should be less of a hassle than Photobucket though, so maybe it won't be so bad.
And yeah, I think it's a good idea to hash ideas back and forth so we can figure out the best solutions to the problem.  Pillowfort does sound like a good idea, though admittedly I don't know a lot about it.  And @jenniferrpovey has a good point about LJ, which I'll reblog shortly.
pivitor replied to your text post: Sorry you havent been doing well, but glad to hear you're feeling a little better now!
Thank you very much :D
peppersandcats replied to your text post: Huh! I didn't realize you were Canadian, or if I did I forgot (am very low on sleep right now).
Yes indeed, and I'm now living in southwestern Ontario :)
And I hope you can catch up on sleep soon!  I haven't slept well in a while either, and it really does impact one's daily functioning :\
peppersandcats replied to your text post: Someone had a link for how to get a Tumblr feed in DW - I'll try and grab up a link.
Really!  That's interesting, I hadn't heard that.  I tried to import my blog into Wordpress the other night but it doesn't seem to have worked and then the site acted difficult about it; maybe there's just too much demand going on for that right now.  I'll try again in a bit, but DW could be a good option too.  Please do send it along if you find it :)
dullscythe replied to your text post: I'm glad you're feeling better! Although if you haven't check your posts, so much SFW stuff has been flagged
Thank you :)  Nothing of mine has been flagged as far as I can tell, but I have noticed one bit of weirdness: a post from eight years ago is showing up on my front page, in amongst the posts from two weeks ago.  And also a post from two years ago.  Maybe it’s only looking that way on my end, but boy did Tumblr break things again :P

AJJ - goodbye, oh goodbye
If I stay in bed long enoughThey'll go to church without meIf I move away enoughThey won't outrun me
sean bonnette has a way of writing extremely narratively specific (and often surreal/nonsenseical) lyrics that are still massively personally resonant for me. the result is that even the most negative songs they end up with are weirdly comforting. on the scale of depressing to uplifting, though, this track’s firmly in the middle. it feels like a mirror held up to the saddest, most adrift version of me when i was a kid, though - but instead of being like ‘oh, i’m sad thinking about what that was like for me’ i’m just like ‘wow, so it wasn’t just me.’
oso oso - out of the blue
aint it nice to fuck up, and not be in it alone?
it was hard to pick a line for this song because i honestly think jade lilitri is one of this generation’s greatest underrated emo songwriters. if you’ve never listened to this record, spencer, i’d really recommend it.
send me an ∞ and i’ll put my music on shuffle and post my favorite line

14, 15, 24, 29, music ask!
14. Have you met any of your favorite bands/artist? Not really? Outside of a hey or good set in passing or at the merch table I really do not go out of my way to talk to  bands I like lol. Gotta keep the spheres separate. Though I will say I did get to hang a bit with the folks from Thin Lips when my band opened for them and they were really chill, and because of that show we ended up recording our album with their bassist!
15. When was your first concert? Summer after eighth grade, I went to go see Brooks and Dunn at the great new york state fair. Also I had what was (at the time) undiagnosed walking pneumonia!
24. A song/songs that make you sad? There’s not actually a lot of songs that make me sad, because music is such a joy for me, but listening to Free Fallin’ bums me out now. It was the first favorite song I remember having, and now it just reminds me that Tom Petty isn’t around anymore, and that sucks.
29. What is your favourite music video right now? So I recently went down a late 90s/early 2000s post-grunge music video rabbit hole on YouTube (a journey I HIGHLY recommend) and I gotta give it up to the video Chevelle did for Send the Pain Below which is the emotional journey of an EXTREME snowboarder landing a sick trick. Also the song still kinda slaps.
