Mitsubishi A6M3 Model 22 Zero s/n 2-152 (NZ6000).
Built c. July 1943 m/n 3844 was built for the IJN as a Type 0 Carrier Fighter. It was likely assigned to 201 Kōkūtai (Air Group 201) and flown out of Rabaul (occupied Papua New Guinea) and then Kara Airfield. It never saw combat as it was either damaged or deemed unserviceable in 1943.
It was repaired using parts from multiple Zeros. On September 14th, 1945, days after the surrender of Japanese forces at Bougainville RAAF Auster s/n A11-3 departed Piva Yoke with a photographer on board. A day later, it was 'captured' by RNZAF personnel. It was then flown from Kara to Piva Yoke Airfield.
It was loaded onto the Union Company's TSS Wahine and taken to RNZAF Hobsonville on the 20th of October 1945 after a five day journey from Torokina. It was given the RNZAF s/n NZ6000, and after bouncing around all three North Island air force bases, it finally ended up on display at the Auckland War Memorial Museum.
This list of Zeros used to rebuild 2-152 can be seen here. It is also the leading source of information on this Zero, and where I got my information from.

BLURB: From USA Today bestselling author Misty Walker comes a dark MC romance with touch-her-and-die vibes from an insta-obsessed golden retriever biker.
Tinleigh is a pint-sized, curvy vixen with a darkness in her eyes and a sway to her hips that has me captivated. She’s also the woman her identical twin sister trusts me to look but not touch. So, was it smart to bring her to the club’s compound and move her into my cabin? Abso-freakin-lutely not. Did I do it anyway? Heck yeah! Haven’t I mentioned how hot she is?
It should be easy to keep my hands off her body and my heart in my chest since her walls are not only up, they’re ten feet deep and lined with barbs. Unfortunately for her, I was never one for self-preservation.
Little by little, she lets me in, and I fall even more for the woman who has been protecting everyone but herself for her whole life. Well, not anymore. Because when crap goes south with her and her twin’s sleazy abusive ex-boss, she not only has me, she has the entire Sons of Erebus MC backing her up.
Despite my reassurances though, she sacrifices herself and disappears in a desperate, last-ditch effort to protect her sister and keep me at bay.
Now it’s up to me to prove that, for better or worse, she belongs to me. And nothing and no one will stand in my way. It’s time to go get the girl.
*Lucky's Trouble is a dark motorcycle romance with dual POVs and told in first person. All books in the Sons of Erebus series stand alone but are best read in order. Please check content warnings on author's website.

For over three decades, Lella Vignelli designed dozens products in silver. Italian silver specialist San Lorenzo Silver produced many projects with Lella such as her numerous jewelry pieces and, in collaboration with her husband and partner Massimo Vignelli, their Bar Set (1971), Bar Tools (1972), and the Liturgical objects for Saint Peter's Church (1976) to name just a few.
We often find unexpected or unusual items in the archives and this long scroll for San Lorenzo certainly fits that description! Although this object is a bit of mystery, it does seem to be from the 1970s and lists the designers that helped launch San Lorenzo in 1971.
On San Lorenzo’s website you can see a photograph of their first shop which featured a long narrow window which this scroll might fit quite nicely?
It is made of a thin clear plastic with black ink printed on it featuring a photo and name of each designer. The scroll has a white painted 2-inch dowel on each end and is about 1.5 feet wide and about 8 feet long. Although showing some warping, the plastic is in excellent condition!

UIA2021RIO – New Hybrid Format Ensures Global Reach and Access
This year’s UIA2021RIO World Congress of Architects—the planet’s largest international gathering of architects—will combine virtual sessions with live, on-site events. Given the varied and ever-changing travel restrictions across the world, Congress participants who cannot be in Rio de Janeiro will now be able to enjoy full access to a virtual Congress, including presentations by eminent speakers, live ceremonies, multiple seminars and workshops, exhibitions, design competitions, film series, and many other digital and live events.
“Combining digital broadcasts with live events allows us to maintain the scope and magnitude of the Congress, while greatly expanding access to its content,” said Sérgio Magalhães, president of the Congress executive committee. “The digital and physical worlds have become contiguous and complementary,” added Thomas Vonier, president of the International Union of Architects, noting that “the hybrid format will enrich the Congress, with digital broadcasts from March onward, and live, in-person events from July 18 – 22 in Rio.”
In the months leading up to the Congress, international speakers and seminars will delve into the Congress theme All the Worlds. Just One World. Architecture 21. The month of March will focus on the sub-theme, Weaknesses and Inequalities, with discussions on social inclusion, definitions of the urban periphery, and a spotlight on favela architecture. The Congress will take up additional sub-themes in subsequent months.
According to Nivaldo Andrade, IAB (Institute of Architects of Brazil) Vice President of Relations UIA2021RIO, “the Executive Committee, together with its partners and stakeholders, has done its utmost to create the most outstanding World Congress of Architects in recent times”. He adds that a parallel digital programme is the best way to ensure access to valuable content for all.
The underlying themes of the Congress – the quest for solutions leading to a fairer and better-balanced world – address the major issues facing humankind and the planet, demonstrating how architecture and urban design can help to improve society and the environment.

UIA 27th World Congress of Architects News
In statements and interviews, participants in the 27th World Congress of architects open the discussion on the future of cities.
Francis Kéré, Elizabeth de Portzamparc, Zaida Muxi and Oskar Metsavaht are among those who recorded videos for a special UIA2021RIO programme next week
Transferred to July 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the 27th World Congress of Architects is already organising virtual discussions. The idea is to establish an open, collaborative programme fostering reflections and proposals responding to the contemporary challenges raised by cities.
The countdown to the event begins next week, with the publication of special content in the UIA2021RIO social networks, with videos featuring statements and interviews with speakers, contributors and partners. They talk about the impact of the pandemic, what could be altered in city configurations, and what architects and urban planners should contribute to society.
Miguel Pinto Guimarães interviews Francis Kéré
A leading name in the modern world, African architect Diébédo Francis Kéré is one of the participants in the special programme for the week. Interviewed by fellow architect Miguel Pinto Guimarães, their conversation will be released in the UIA2021RIO networks on Thursday, July 23.
Born in Burkina Faso, Kéré has proven an agent for social transformation in his home continent. His designs blend traditional construction materials and methods, with community participation.
Confirmed as a keynote speaker at the 27th World Congress of Architects, during this interview Kéré outlines his view of the world in the current context, talking about his activities in countries as different as Mali, Yemen, China and the USA.
The winner of several international architecture prizes, including the Aga Khan Award for Achitecture, the Global Holcim Award, the BSI Swiss Architectural Award and the Schelling Architecture Award, Diébédo Francis Kéré was included for the first time this year on the Architectural Digest list of the world’s most influential architects and interior designers: AD100 2020.
With projects implemented in Brazil and elsewhere in the world, Rio-born architect Miguel Pinto Guimarães guides the conversation through his studies of traditional peoples and the harmonisation of architecture with natural landscapes, climate and plantlife. He is also confirmed as a speaker at UIA2021RIO.

UIA World Congress of Architects News
Forecast to attract 20,000 Attendees, the World Congress of Architects is postponed.
The International Union of Architects (UIA) and the Brazilian Institute of Architects (IAB) announce that the 27th World Congress of Architects – UIA2020RIO will be postponed.
Initially scheduled for July 19 – 23, 2020 in Rio de Janeiro, it will now be held on July 18 – 22, 2021.
This decision was taken jointly with the UIA2020RIO Executive Committee, after carefully analysing the situation caused by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. This raised a series of stumbling-blocks (consisting mainly of health threats) for the vast majority of the countries that would otherwise have attended the world’s largest Architecture event.
With attendees already signed up from more than sixty countries, this Conference also has some fifty speakers and seven keynote speakers from seventeen countries. The original expectations were that this event would attract between 15,000 and 20,000 participants to Rio de Janeiro in 2020, ranking it as one of the largest business events in the city this year.
The many pre-Congress events – including exhibitions, seminars, lectures and other occasions – will be rescheduled as soon as permitted by the coronavirus pandemic.
“The situation in which we are living is dramatic, and it is a pity that we have to postpone our largest event. But we here at the UIA and the team preparing the UIA2020RIO in Brazil are firmly committed to repeating the preparations, in order to ensure that we hold one of our most memorable Congresses in 2021. This coronavirus crisis raises new issues and contexts for Architecture and Urban Planning that must be discussed in some depth,” says Thomas Vonier, who chairs the International Union of Architects.
All registrations and enrolments will remain valid for the new event dates, and the programme drawn up for the 27th World Congress of Architects will remain unchanged.
One of the main issues – Urban Health – tabled for discussion at UIA2020RIO under the coordination of the UIA Public Health Group (PHG) should become even more significant, encompassing discussions on Architecture and Urban Planning responding to the needs resulting from epidemics such as that caused by the coronavirus.
“Already a major theme at UIA2020RIO, discussions of Urban Health now take on a new dimension. We have much to discuss, ranging from hospital designs through to basic sanitation projects, and including discussions of urban spaces during epidemics. Without the slightest doubt, Architecture and Urban Planning have much to contribute to the sustainable development of our cities, as they face these new challenges,” commented Sérgio Magalhães, who chairs the UIA2020RIO Executive Committee.
With this postponement, the Congress will now be held in the Centennial year of the Brazilian Institute of Architects (IAB). Its President Nivaldo Andrade says that “Like Brazil, the Institute looks forward to welcoming practitioners from all over the world on an occasion that is so important to this entity.”

B & B Italia Furniture
From its creation, B&B Italia has adopted an innovative image of being a modern Italian brand based on industrial models. The company uses high-tech production techniques and materials such as plastic and polyurethane foams. B&B quickly established itself as one of the leading companies in the furniture market during the second half of the 20th century.
Alchemy is built up between creativity, innovation, and industrial capacity. From this alchemy emerges modern, exclusive furnishing elements that are characterized by high quality and timeless elegance. Adventure, challenge, and innovation are the key words to describe B&B Italia.
B & B Italia
The B&B Italia furniture collection was created to represent contemporary culture. B&B responds quickly to the evolution of the home environment. The modern furnishing elements are both distinctive and uniquely beautiful as a result.
Continuous research and collaboration with international designers have been key factors in the company's strategic development. It is an approach that has allowed B&B to distinguish itself from all others over the years. B&B has received many honors and awards over the years, including four Golden Compasses--the most prestigious award for industrial design in Italy.
Diversity of designs
Among the wide range of products you can find:
Sofas
Chairs
Armchairs
Tables
Desks
Cabinets
B&B’s extraordinary design and quality of workmanship has always delighted people over the years. The brand's designs decorate the interiors of exclusive apartments, hotels and buildings. The variety of designs offered allows you to choose furniture that will fit harmoniously into both minimalist and modern interiors, as well as those decorated in a classic style.
Tumblr media
The first steps of Piero Ambrogio Busnelli
The identity of this famous brand owes everything to its founder, Piero Ambrogio Busnelli - nicknamed "il Leone" (the lion). He was born in 1926 to poor parents in la Brianza. This is both a fertile breeding ground in terms of entrepreneurship and the historical cradle of design in the province of Como in Lombardy.
Busnelli was a talent spotter and invented a revolutionary process for mass production: polyurethane foam padding. In order to build the image of the brand on which he would build his empire, he relied on unknown geniuses in architecture and photography. He then teamed up with some of the leading names in design.
Busnelli & Piano
Busnelli trusted a young architect who had not yet proven himself: Renzo Piano. Busnelli commissioned him to design the headquarters of his company in Novedrate. Even if it was not visible from the city skyline, he wanted it to be unique.
In 1971, the young architect imagined a sort of sketch of the future Pompidou Centre, which made him famous a few years later. The concept was that of a box suspended inside a tubular metal structure with--on the outside--visible and colored pipes.
Risk taking and poker moves
In the 1960s, Piero Ambrogio Busnelli's main concern was not to follow in the footsteps of the artisanal businesses that flourished in the region. The design pioneer preferred to take risks, which paid off as he managed to revolutionize the production process. From improbable poker shots to brilliant intuitions, his goal was to win the market with a managerial approach.
The origin of the name B & B Italia
B&B was initially called C&B, following a partnership with the artisan chair maker Cesare Cassina. However, Busnelli was looking at the rapidly developing plastic materials sector, and as a result, he left Cassina to his artisanal production, and borrowed his network of designers such as:
Afra and Tobia Scarpa
Vico Magistretti
Gaetano Pesce
Tumblr media
He was always looking for ways to industrialize his own production. Forced to find the funds for this purpose because he no longer had a partner, Busnelli turned to the banks. In a grateful stroke of humor, he named his company B&B for "Bank & Busnelli".
The discovery of Piero Ambrogio Busnelli
Torn by the need to stay ahead of progress, Piero Ambrogio Busnelli found himself strolling around London at the plastic materials fair in the mid-60s. He saw a stand with perfectly round ducks, made in one piece thanks to a special mold casting. He then had the idea of adapting this process to produce a seat.
The entrepreneur returned to Italy with the recipe for the polyurethane that gave life to the famous ducks. It's a mixture of two milky liquids that--when fused together--produce a chemical reaction that creates a voluminous paste that perfectly fits the shape of any container.
New innovative technology
After his London trip, a new way of designing furniture was born. It allowed Busnelli to drastically reduce production costs and to experiment with infinite forms and shapes of furniture. An organic sofa such as Zaha Hadid's Moon System marketed in 2007 could not have been conceived without such structural simplicity.
For each of them a specially designed mold was made. It's a sort of monumental waffle iron from which the entire piece of furniture is extracted. The density of the upholstery is calculated beforehand in the same way as you would make cake dough. And by combining technological discoveries such as the use of metal instead of wood, it became possible to increase the dimensions of the seat.
This entrepreneurial breakthrough in the 1960s led to the creation of the one-piece sofas, which became so iconic and shaped the history of the company.
Innovations boom
The Coronado model, dating from 1966, represented a first revolution as its elements were assembled using only six screws, thus allowing delivery in kit form. Other inventions then followed one after the other.
In 1969, Gaetano Pesce designed a round armchair shaped like a woman's body, which he named « Up ». It is sold under vacuum and once out of its packaging, it is spontaneously inflated with freon gas to take its final shape. It is a technique that is forbidden today. This was a kind of artistic performance to which a political message was added. The chair was tied by a rope to a large ball that was believed to symbolize the condition of women in prison.
Mario Bellini's Bambole (1972) was presented at the Milan Fair that same year. It made its way into the spotlight thanks to a suggestive advertising campaign by a young unknown photographer, Oliviero Toscani. He was the controversial author of the Benetton ads. The poster, displayed in front of the stand, showed the top model of the time, Donna Jordan, half-naked on the couch. It stirred up the censorship committee. The scandal prompted unexpected success for B&B Italia.
Tumblr media
Magic shapes
Like the materials, shapes also have a story at B&B Italia. In order to get the line of his Papilio chair accepted, Japanese designer Naoto Fukasawa had to revise his model several times before it was approved by the Research and Development Center. He had to lighten the prototype with his originally planned metal legs, which were considered too vintage. The result was a hollowed-out cone with a wing-shaped backrest. It was anchored to the ground, with a streamlined yet enveloping design.
As for the Crinoline armchair designed for an outdoor collection, Patricia Urquiola was inspired by the rattan of a basket brought back from a trip. She uses polyethylene fibers for this project.
Maxalto
The trademark would perhaps not have the world-wide reputation it enjoys without its more consensual line: Maxalto. The brand was founded by B&B Italia in 1975, with a focus on the reinterpretation of classic design forms.
The brand name refers to the term "Massa Alto", which means “highest” in Italian. This is precisely what we can expect from this company's products--top quality design that never disappoints.
The artistic direction of Maxalto was first entrusted to Afra and Tobia Scarpa, then to Antonio Citterio in 1993. In 2002, Antonio Citterio was entrusted with the construction of a third building. It houses:
The research and development center
The underground mold storage room
A professional showroom
The B&B Italia woodworking plant uses more traditional techniques, from precious wood veneers to shellac varnishing techniques. The aim is to design furniture whose luxury is ingrained in the smallest details.
B&B Italia : the expert of Italian design
At B&B Italia, the technologies and materials used to manufacture the products are an integral part of advanced research. Moreover, quality control is carried out at every phase of production. These manufacturing processes ensure that each product has its own identity and meets the requirements of the international market.
Tumblr media
B&B Italia has a network of over 700 businesses who use its products located in some 50 countries. Among its customers are:
Luxurious hotels
Gourmet restaurants
Dreamy yachts and holidays cruise ships
Multi-function stores and showrooms
Huge banks
Renowned theaters
High-quality museums
International airports
Is there any secret to such a wide range of activities? Yes, there is. Not only does B&B Italia offer a very rich selection of furniture, but its expertise also enables the manufacturer to provide tailor-made answers to each customer. This is made possible with an innovative industrial tool that features four production units and a center dedicated to research and development.
Collaboration with famous international designers
B&B Italia has collaborated with the most important international designers and architects, including:
Afra and Tobia Scarpa
Antonio Citterio
Atelier Oi
Chris Howker
David Chipperfield
Ettore Sottsass
Gaetano Pesce
Jakob Wahner
Jean-Marie Massaud
Jeffrey Bernett
Marcel Wanders
Mario Bellini
Naoto Fukasawa
Paolo Piva
Patricia Urquiola
Richard Sapper
Richard Schultz
Studio Kairos
Vico Magistretti
Zaha Hadid
B&B Italia in figures
Year of creation : 1966
Factory : 28 000 m2
Workforce: 500 people, including 250 in the 3 plants
Presence: in 80 countries
Flagship-stores: 8
Monobrand stores: 40
Resellers: approximately 800
Turnover: €170 M (of which 78% comes from exports)
The term that best sums up B&B Italia is quality. Since its creation, the research center has allowed it to become an industrial company at the service of design. Busnelli has devoted 3% of the company's revenue to it. As a result, thousands of innovative projects have been created and spread on a global scale.
B&B Italia is a world-famous brand because it exported its products very early on. The policy of opening flagship-stores, initiated in 2001 in France, has had an impact on its great notoriety.
The first flagship in Paris
A new space entirely dedicated to the Italian brand B&B Italia has opened up in the historic district of Paris. It was natural for B&B Italia to partner with the leading distributor Silvera for its first Parisian flagship store.
The prestigious Italian publisher is located in a former customs listed building. The layout was entrusted to the architect and designer Jean-Marie Massaud, who transformed the 8,000 square feet location to reflect the image of B&B: creative and modern.
The showroom’s layout
The three levels of the building are connected by a smoked glass staircase that is more than 100 feet high. The home, outdoor and project collections of B&B Italia are displayed on each platform.
Tumblr media
Collections for the interior, exterior and public spaces with sofas and outdoor furniture fill the ground floor and the basement. Offices, large meeting tables and rest areas for the tertiary sector are located on the 1st floor.
Iconic collections
The setting is immaculate, fluid and luminous. It fades away to highlight the lines and curves of the furniture, so that you can discover the brand's best-sellers such as:
The Up collection signed by Gaetano Pesce
The Moon System by Zaha Hadid
The Crinoline armchair designed by Patricia Urquiola
Jean-Marie Massaud's sublime daybed
The Luis sofa by Antonio Citterio
And much more
B&B Italia's contract business
B&B Italia's contract business is now responsible for a big part of its overall revenue. Sales Director Roberto Barbazza says that this is a very good time for the contract business, especially in Europe.
He also mentions the Olympic Games in London, which brought B&B some prestigious projects. These include the luxurious Bulgari Hotel and the Café Royal Hotel.
B&B designer Piero Lissoni worked on the beautiful Conservatorium Hotel in Amsterdam. The brand has also signed with the Clarion Hotel Post in Gothenburg in Sweden, and the Clarion in Norway.
Discover the durability secret of this emblematic brand
To look at the duration is to evoke that of the products themselves. It would not be wrong to say that a B&B Italia sofa or armchair is indestructible. To understand why, you have to drop the cover and dive into the soul of the product, both in the literal and figurative sense.
After Piero Ambrogio Busnelli discovered polyurethane foam at the event in London, he developed it into an extraordinary product for the manufacture of armchairs and sofas with original shapes.
By combining this cold-molded material with a metal frame, it becomes possible to obtain a comfortable and resistant seat, and to do so without the traditional wooden structure. As a result, the shapes given by a metal mold are freed up and can adopt any fantasy in terms of dimensions and design.
Behind the scenes of furniture production
At the factory, production is divided into two lines:
Sofas
Armchairs and footstools
A carousel is used to hold the molds that rotate for about 20 minutes. The polyurethane foam is cold injected, swells to 40 times its initial volume and solidifies.
The workers then simply have to remove the sofa or armchair from the mold and remove the remaining residue. The garment department then takes over, preparing the leathers and fabrics that have been checked one by one and then assembled. The last step is to cover the foam with a protective layer of Dacron, a synthetic textile, which gives it more flexibility before the final dressing.
Tumblr media
B&B Italia is able to create custom-made products for both individuals and contracts. The company uses both the products of the collection, but can modify the size or the finishes as well. B&B can also create tailor-made products with architects, or even manage an entire project, like a hotel for example.
The fabric
The fabrics used are the result of rigorous research. They are a mixture of natural and synthetic yarns, tested for their resistance to all types of use. Some fabrics are also subjected to treatments to increase their performance tenfold and meet customer expectations.
The leather
Whether it is the Diesis sofa or the Mart armchair, the beauty and suppleness of the leather used is amazing. And this is not surprising, because the brand pays particular attention to the origin of its skins.
The selected leathers come from animals bred within the European Union. All demonstrate a guarantee of care and attention to the animal's well-being.
To preserve the excellence of this raw material, treatments and finishes ensure optimal conservation of the natural characteristics of the leather.
The wood
As far as wood is concerned, the Italian designer is banking on American white oak rift. It’s easily recognizable by its straight and irregular fiber, with a texture that is sometimes a little coarse.
Rosewood comes from controlled cultivation in Latin America. Its veins with chromatic reflections make this wood an inimitable and unique species.
The teak used for outdoor collections is one of the most prestigious tropical woods. Its exceptional qualities against bad weather and its natural fatty resin increase its impermeability and make it extremely resistant.
The marble
The different marbles offered by B&B Italia have two types of finishes, depending on the customer's expectations: matte or varnished. An anti-stain treatment slows down the absorption of liquids. The polyester varnish enhances the marked veining and chromatic reflections of the marbles.
There’s a big selection, which includes:
Emperador marble
White Calacatta marble

Family business in the hands of global investors
B&B Italia has always been run by its founder, who was very intuitive and visionary. When he became sick, his son made the decision to bring in investors.
In 2011, he bought B&B from the private financial company Opera, which obtained a majority stake in 2002. He has been running the company with his brother since the death of their father in 2014.
Investindustrial has been alongside B&B Italia since 2015. It provides a vision for the future and motivates the development of the company's communication. A year later, the company bought out his fellow businesses Arclinea and Azucena. Arclinea is a high-end chef and Azucena owns the archives and the rights to the designer's creations, Luigi Caccia Dominioni.
Tumblr media
In 2016, B&B Italia celebrated its 50th anniversary by presenting limited edition pieces at the Salone del Mobile in Milan.
International Design Group
As part of the International Design Group, B&B Italia joins two small and medium-sized lighting specialists--the Danish Louis Poulsen and the Italian Flos. For its part, Flos acquired the outdoor lighting manufacturer Ariès.
All of these companies carry out most of their business outside Italy. Exports account for 80% of B&B Italia's sales--40% of which are in the United States and China--and 65% at Arclinea. The chef has just launched his first showroom in Paris in Beaupassage, the small luxury mall.
These brands enjoy a strong image with architects and decorators and are generating a growing share of their business through contracts to fit out:
Concert halls
Yachts
Hotels
And other luxury boutiques
Within the same entity, it will be easier for them to create large showrooms to highlight their offerings. The first of its kind has already opened in Paris, bringing together the Boffi, De Padova and MA/U Studio brands.
Awards
The visionary spirit of Piero Ambrogio Busnelli always seems to hover in the corridors, taking the company to other territories.
Awarded four Compasso d'Oro awards--one of which was given to the company itself in 1989--B&B Italia can boast of having earned a special place in the furniture industry. The company is supported by prestigious collaborations.
Tips for choosing furniture colors
We can increase the aesthetic value of the living room by making appropriate color adjustments. For example, the fashionable and timeless combination of white and black requires using appropriate proportions with a clear advantage of one color. Grey is also popular in interior design, but it is good to break through it with a flashy color. A bit of turquoise, yellow or red in decorative elements is all it takes.
Tips to arrange your interior with taste
Healthy moderation should also be maintained when choosing forms of furniture. A coffee table inspired by a shell shape is enough to emphasize the modern character of the living room. Therefore, there is no need to duplicate this pattern of design, as you do not want it to become desperately kitschy.

Sarajevo is a rich mix of faiths and cultures with its citizens at the heart of so much of 20th century history including  the events which to World War 1, the fall of communism, the 1984 Olympics and the wars of the 1990s.  Because of this, I’ve been planning a trip to Sarajevo for about 6 years.  So, as a reward for finishing my PhD, my partner and I embarked on a road trip through Bosnia & Herzegovina, Montenegro and Croatia.  As with many holidays nowadays, the starting point for planning was the internet and researching other people’s experiences.  Google didn’t produce many guides for a road trip so here’s our itinerary.
Oysters & Chardonnay in Istanbul
Day 1: To Sarajevo: Manchester to Sarajevo: 2 Flights, airport to city centre 10km/30min drive.  Highlight: Oysters at Istanbul Airport
One of the first decisions UK travellers have to take is how to get to Sarajevo from the UK.  With no direct flights to Sarajevo, the options are routing via Vienna or, as we did, via Istanbul.  We broke the 12 hour journey with Oysters and Turkish Chardonnay at Istanbul airport which brought a tad of class to an otherwise uneventful journey.
The road in to central Sarajevo from the airport takes you down sniper alley where bullets came down on locals from the mountains during the city’s siege in the 1990s.  You also pass high rise blocks built for the 1984 Olympics, the Bosnia & Herzegovina parliament and then the Miljacka river with its famous bridges.
That evening, we walked around the centre encountering for the first time its mosques, coffee shops and the odd hipster bar – the rich mix of culture and history was evident from the outset.
Day 2: Sarajevo: City of Contrasts:  Sarajevo: No travel.  Highlight: Gallery 11/07/95
I opened the curtains to find a view that summarised much of what I had read about Sarajevo: a Mosque & church, mountains & water, ruins & men repairing a river bank. This is a city being (re)built around its multiple faiths, rich & beautiful natural resources and its industrious people.
Mountains &; River, Mosque & Church in Sarajevo
Sarajevo from Yellow Bastion
The day was spent exploring the city:
The East side with its lower wooden buildings, bazaars and mosques.  The West side with its stone, larger, almost Austrian buildings and churches.  Throughout, bullet marks and Sarajevo roses where mortar craters have been filled with red resin.
Gallery 11/07/95 which tells the story of Srebrenica massacre through photographs and a powerful audio tour (extra but well worth it).  At the end there was also a moving film about the Sarajevo siege which depicted children of all backgrounds playing together in a burnt out car even as bombs fell.  We both teared up.
Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque with its calm courtyard, simply decorated building and welcoming people.
The Yellow Bastion with its dramatic view over the city.  It’s reached by walking through Muslim Graveyards from the siege years when any parkland had to be taken over in order to bury the dead.
That evening, we discovered some of the local haunts: on the eastern side we enjoyed skater shop cum craft ale bar Board Room (1 Đulagina čikma) whilst in the west, the bar with the balloons (Ort at Sime Milutinovića Sarajlije 15) was a buzzing place to spend a couple of hours.
Day 3: Into the Mountains:  Sarajevo to Šćepan Polje (Montenegro border) via Olympic Bobsleigh & Tjentište, 157km/3hr30min drive.  Highlight: Mountain Roads / Beers overlooking Tara Canyon
Sarajevo Olympic Bobsleigh Track
Communist war memorial at Tjentiste
We left the city today and headed for the mountains on roads which seemed almost vertical for the first few miles.  We visited two concrete ruins: firstly the remains of the Olympic Bobsleigh track outside Sarajevo.  Then, after a windy drive in to the mountains the memorial at Tjentiste which remembers a military success by Tito in World War II.
Tara Canyon
The drive then became rougher with the road in pretty poor condition and (occasionally) filled with animals.  Eventually, we reached the border and crossed in to Montenegro.  A few metres later was our accommodation; sat on the banks of the upper Tara Canyon we fed on the views – as well as the local beers and food.
Day 4: Canyons & Mountains: Šćepan Poljeto to Žabljak via Piva Canyon, Durmitor national park, Tara Gorge & Black Lake, 150km/3hr30min drive.  Highlight: Drive through Piva Canyon & Durmitor national park
Within minutes of leaving our accommodation we found ourselves in a spectacular canyon with cliffs, tunnels and running water.  We then headed in to the mountains and the Durmitor national park: beautiful valleys and awe-inspiring rock formations.  This two hour drive remains one of the highlights of the trip.
Piva River
Durmitor national park
Black Lake
The afternoon was filled with a zip line across the Tara Canyon (impressive if not that much of an adrenaline rush), a pleasant walk around the beautiful Black Lake and a visit to some stecci (ancient tomb stones).  The day ended in a remote cottage with a log fire, local wine and a view out across the valley.
Kotor Bay from Mausoleum of Petar II
Day 5: To the Coast:  Žabljak to Kotor via Locven Park, 203km/3hr30min drive.  Highlight: Mausoleum.
We spent the day driving from North to South Montenegro, enjoying the autumnal colours, particularly in Lovcen National Park.  We stopped at the Mausoleum of Petar II Petrovic-Njegos which offered our first views of Kotor bay below.  We then took the Kotor Serpentine in to the town (ignore Googlemaps which tries to route you via Budvar!) which provided more views of the mountains and sea below.
Kotor was a little disappointing during the daylight hours but in the evening when the cruise ship crowds had left and the light made the unkempt parts seem a little romantic, we warmed to the place.  And the fine local wines helped a little, too.
Day 6: Mountains & Lakes:  Kotor to Dubrovnik via Herceg Novi & Perast, 92km/2hr drive.  Highlight: Perast / wine & cheese in Dubrovnik.
Kotor Bay at Perast
Dubrovnik from above
Another day, another set of astonishing views.  Today we circled the lakes near Kotor and stopped to admire the views.  Perast is a lovely little town and worth some time; Herceg Novi is less so and could have been skipped.  We then crossed the border and headed to Dubrovnik; the coastal border between Montenegro and Croatia is one of the busier crossings so took a little time.  Very pretty but now very discovered with cruise ships & coaches filling the town as well as increasing the prices.  But we had two very pleasant moments: drinking Croatian fizz high above the city near the cable car station.  And sampling local wines and meets/cheeses in a little bar in town (Wine bar razonoda, Ul. od Puča 1).  Classy ways to pass time in a classy city.
Day 7: Beauty & Hurt:  Dubrovnik to Mostar via Kravica waterfalls &  Blagaj, 212km/3hr45min drive.  Highlights: Waterfalls / Bosniak side of Mostar.
We headed north along the coast from Dubrovnik, picking up the A1 motorway to head in to Bosnia.  First stop, Kravica waterfalls which are spectacular and tranquil.  We crossed over to the other bank which was nearly deserted and offered us some time to read and relax.  From here we headed to tranquil Blagaj with its Tekija (monestry) and glowing water.
Kravica waterfalls
Mostar at sunset
We ended the day in Mostar: a fine example of Ottoman architecture.  The very centre has been rebuilt sensitively and is particularly good in evening when crowds left. The suburbs are growing and seemingly wealthier than when I visited 5 years ago.  But 25 years after war, destruction from bombing and snipers is still clear on Bosniak side just a road away from the famous bridge; possibly for legal reasons, certainly financial ones, the rebuilding has not started here.  And yet the church can afford to build a huge tower to show their presence and wealth. Reconciliation is clearly still ongoing.
Day 8: 1984 Revisited: Sarajevo via Konjic, Olympic Sky Jumps, Hotel Igman & Tunnel Museum, 165km/3hr drive.  Highlights: Ski Jumps & Hotel Igman.
Konjic
We travelled deeper in to Bosnia, heading back to Sarajevo.  We stopped in the town of Konjic to admire another fine Ottoman bridge (rebuilt with funds from Turkey) but also spotted the remains of bombed mosques.  We then headed to the mountains behind Sarajevo to visit two 1984 Olympic sites which were then damaged 8 years later in the war. First, sky jumps and the medallists’ podium along with a chair lift, painted in Olympic colours, which happened to be working that day.  It felt a little unsteady but offered brilliant views of the country side.  There were still UN labels on some of the buildings from when they had been used in the war.   A mile or so down the road is the former Hotel Igman: a luxury Olympic hotel turned military HQ in under 10 years. Now a heartbreaking ruin.
Mount Igman: Ski Jumps & Lifts
Mount Igman: Hotel/Military HQ
We drove in to Sarajevo conscious of the pains which had been inflicted on the city.  We stopped at the Tunnel Museum which shows how the city tried to survive (and has a good audio guide using your own mobile – take your headphone).  We ended the day with drinks in the centre of this pretty city where the new businesses are an indication it is moving forward whilst remembering its past.
Day 9: Istanbul – Eventually: Sarajevo to Istanbul, city centre to airport 10km/30min drive, 1 flight.  Highlight: Discovering bars in streets around Mumhane Cd.
Gelata
Today was meant to be a simple two hour flight and in central Sarajevo it was beautifully sunny.  But by the time we reached the airport, fog had set in and the flight was delayed by 3 hours.  On arrival in to Istanbul, we took a taxi in to the centre and explored on foot: firstly crossing the Golden Horn, the streets around Gelata and ending by discovering some trendy, hipster bars on Mumhane Cd.  It may have been a Tuesday night but it was buzzing like a Friday night in London.
Day 10: Mosques & Islam:  Istanbul: no travel.  Highlight: Watching worship at Blue & Suleymaniye Mosques.
Day 10 was spent vising three impressive Mosques: firstly the huge Aya Sofia with its history as church, Mosque and national museum; watching people pray beneath the Blue Mosque’s colourful tiles; being welcomed in the peaceful Suleymaniye Mosque.  We briefly visited the Basilica Cistern which is an intriguing site.  We ended the day shopping in the Grand Bazaar before exploring the back streets of Istanbul: full of atmosphere with people talking, shopping, working & praying.
Aya Sofia
Blue Mosque
Hamami
Day 11: Happy Ending?  Istanbul: no travel.  Highlight: Hamami.
An easy day with a trip on the Bosphorus using the local ferry for a 90 minute cruise followed by Mackerel sandwiches on the quay front.  And then a relaxing scrub in a Hamami with tea and soap leaving me clean for a final night in Istanbul.  We ate at Neolokal, in the SALT Galata building, with modern takes on traditional Turkish dishes and a good wine list topped off with a great view over the Golden Horn.
Day 12: Home Time:  Istanbul to Manchester: 1 flight. Highlight: making the plane!
We took the tram out to the airport to see a little of the city.  It’s worth noting that the Istanbul tram and metro system has a similar system to London’s Oyster Card but that you can scan it multiple times so you only need one for a couple, passing the card back for the next person to use.  The metro was not a fast journey and security is tight to get in to the airport with baggage searched before being allowed to check-in and passports being checked 7 times before boarding the plane.  We made it with a few minutes to spare and home in a matter of ours.
Final Thoughts:  It was an excellent trip with natural beauty, cultural diversity and undiscovered gems.    The highlights remain as Sarajevo with its history and the stunning Piva Canyon & Durmitor national park.
12 days, 4 countries, 13 border posts, over 1000km driven, 4 flights, 1000 photos, 1 excellent travel companion: 1 brilliant road trip.
