Happy Birthday to ex Runrig singer Donnie Munro born 2nd  August 1953, Uig, Isle Of Skye.

Munro made his name as vocalist and guitarist with the highly successful Scottish folk rockers Runrig, before opting to leave the band at the peak of their commercial success to pursue a career in politics. The Skye born singer was brought up in an English and Gaelic-speaking household. He initially resisted calls from his old friend Calum MacDonald to join Runrig, concentrating instead on his job teaching Art at Inverness Royal Academy, but eventually relented in 1974 and, after several years with the band on a part-time basis, joined as a full-time member in 1982.

Runrig went on to enjoy great success in their native Scotland but were even more popular across the border in England, placing successive albums in the UK Top 10 and broaching the Top 20 with their single ‘An Ubhal As Airde (The Highest Apple)’.

IN the 90’s Donnie launched a solo career with On The West Side. The follow-up, Across The City And The World, featured eight Munro originals and the traditional Gaelic number ‘Calum Sgaire’, and detailed his experiences of growing up on Skye. A Gaelic language album followed later in the year. The multi-talented Munro is also a painter and has exhibited his work at the National Gallery. In 2021 he painted a mural on a  wall in the heart of Portree 

Donnie might not have written the words to this song, but without his lyrics, it, and many other songs from Runrig would not have had the appeal that has endeared many fans to the group.

the images above were shot by 5 of the worlds most famous photographers,

Angelina Jolie by Annie Liebovitz - for many of her portraits Annie would only use one light and one umbrella.  for this specific shot, lighting would have been quite close to the subject with the light being soften using a soft box. The closer the light source is to a subject, the softer the light will fall on the face.  the image suggests that the light was above and to one side of the model, aimed at the cheeks, this gives a Rembrandt look to the image. “By lighting the subject I find they pop forward, then I leave the camera open to get the background.” (https://www.picturecorrect.com/tips/celebrity-photography-techniques-with-annie-leibovitz/) 

rattlesnake skinner by Richard Avedon - this is one of the images taken from In The American West, a 13 year old rattlesnake skinner. the lighting for this image and all or many of the shots taken for The American West was open shade natural light, this can give soft natural light for portraits without having to use other equipment.  In open shade, more light comes directly at the subjects face, this then lights it up evenly.  to achieve this the subject is put under a doorway or a tree.  as can be seen part of the boys head is not in view suggesting that he is under something which is why you can see catch light in the eyes.  if there were sunlight coming in from above, there would be no catch light.

Andy Warhol by David Baily - for this image, to achieve the pure white background and to make the subject bold and stand out, the background would have been light up with a studio light, quite close with the light turned up quite high.  a further light will have been infront of the subject, again quite close.  there would have been a slight distance between subject and background.  this style of lighting is know as High Key Lighting as it “uses unnaturally bright lighting to blow out most or all harsh shadows in an (image” https://photography.tutsplus.com/tutorials/the-complete-beginners-guide-to-shooting-high-key--photo-2949)

Lisa Fontaine by Irving Penn - when shooting fashion photography for Vogue in the 1940s, Penn would use white backdrops and striking compositions that emphasised form (www.irvingpenn.org).  Penn is known for using a lighting style know as ‘north light’ from his portable studio or from real ‘daylight studios’ where there would be skylights and floor to ceiling glass which would allow for natural light.  in this image I would guess that this lighting is directional,(from the left) there is slight fall off from the right hand side of the face.

Woody Allan by Philippe Halsman - when Halsman first started out he bought himself a photoflood lamp, he experimented with this one light, by placing the light in various positions he found that it effected the mood of the picture..  for this image of Woody Allan, I would say that firstly the shot was took close up to the face, (frontal lighting but slightly) there are sift shadows indicating a soft box was used this would have then allowed for more light to be dispersed which then brings out the white backdrop.

On Monday we finally started working in the studio and we got to use the studio lights. I actually had a lot of fun with this lesson and it was pretty cool to see all the lights and how they work.

In the first photo is the whole side profile of the light. Here you can see the output and the lighting modifier and also a little switch that you press when you want to change the dish, softbox, reflecter or grid.

In the second picture is a close up of the output. This switch controls the flash. The small the number or fraction the brighter the flash.

In the third picture there is a close up picture of the lighting modifier. This switch controles the intensity of the light.

In the fourth picture is a close up of the switch we would pull back when we want to change the dish of whatever attachment we have on the light.

The fifth is picture of the lightbulb. The lightbulb is 275 watts and it is a photoflood 1 bulb. There is an exposed copper wire around the bulb in the shape of a horse shoe around the bulb. It is really important that there is always a dish or any type of attachment on the light at all times as it you were to touch this wire and fire the light, you would recieve a very nasty shock.
