Happy Birthday Scottish singer Karen Matheson, born February 11th 1963 in Taynuilt, Argyll.

Widely recognised as the compelling vocals of Celtic super-group Capercaillie, Karen Matheson’s life in the limelight began with her performing as a child in her local village hall in Argyll. where she was brought up immersed in the deep well of traditional songs that have been her inspiration for over 30 years of recording and performing worldwide.

Karen start Capercaillie with several high school friends in the mid-80’s. The band had a successful career and released several albums throughout the next decades, but in 1997 Matheson decided to try her hand at a solo release. The resulting album, The Dreaming Sea, showcased her vocal range and gave her an opportunity to experiment with her talents. She rejoined the group when they reconvened for their next album, and stayed with them until 2002, when she decided to try another solo album. Time to Fall, appeared in the summer of that year.

In December 2010 she was presented with an Honorary degree in music from the Robert Gordon University – another achievement to add to her OBE, and award of “Best Gaelic singer” from the inaugural Scottish folk awards – just some of the many plaudits earned from an astonishing career.

On 12th September 2022, Karen Matheson sang a Gaelic psalm at the Service of Thanksgiving for the late Queen Elizabeth II, at St. Giles Cathedral in Edinburgh, which was attended by HM King Charles III and other members of the Royal Family. The Queen’s coffin lay in state at the cathedral during the service and until 5 pm the following day.
