It was not all tromping through sets, though. I also spent two days locked in a room with Ryan Condal and his writing staff (Sara Hess, Ti Mikkel, David Hancock, and Philippa Goslett) talking about the third and fourth seasons of HOUSE OF THE DRAGON. They were lively, fun discussions, and we got some good work done… though two days was not nearly enough. There is so much ground to cover that I am not sure twenty days would have been enough.
The highlight of the trip, though, had to be the sneak preview that Ryan gave me of the first two episodes of HOUSE OF THE DRAGON, season two. (Rough cuts, of course). Of course, I am hardly objective when talking about anything based on my own work… but I have to say, I thought both episodes were just great. (And they are not even finished yet). Dark, mind you. Very dark. They may make you cry. (I did not cry myself, but one of my friends did). Powerful, emotional, gut-wrenching, heart rending. Just the sort of thing I like.

George R.R. Martin just got back from the UK. He devoted a fair amount of attention to it at Not a Blog.
Apparently there's an ASoIaF stage play in the works.
[O]ne of the meetings I had in London was with Dominick and Duncan, the director and scriptwriter of our own stage play, the one we have been working on for the past few years. Originally we were calling it HARRENHAL, but we have now settled on THE IRON THRONE as a title… until we think of something better. Regardless, things are coming well, I think, and we are hopeful of being able to open in late 2024. Maybe.
GRRM spent time with HotD showrunner Ryan Condal and visited Leavesden Studios.
[N]othing I have ever seen can compare with the Red Keep and Dragonstone sets they have built at Leavesden Studios in London.  HUGE, stunning, and so damned real that I felt as if I had gone through a time portal to medieval Westeros. I love castles and have visited dozens of actual medieval castles, keeps, and towers in my time, and none of the real castles I’ve ever seen can hold a candle… or a torch… to our Red Keep.
Yes, he discussed a fourth season for House of the Dragon with Ryan Condal. 😃 But back to Season 2...
(What can I say? I was weaned on Shakespeare, and love the tragedies and history plays best of all).
He also mentioned that he got to spend time with Maisie Williams and other friends. Hmmm, I hope they talked about the possibility of an "Arya's Voyages" sequel. 😉
Here's a picture of GRRM and Ryan Condal at the Red Keep set.

^^^ Given the start of the Targaryen civil war in Season 2, that sky looks appropriately ominous.

Midnight Binge: The Nevers (Mid-Season Final)
Beautifully crafted, witty, magical, and filled with secrets, The Nevers, an HBO show created by Joss Whedon (who stepped down as director/executive producer in November 2020), is an epic tale that follows a growing group of Victorian women and minorities (as well as those living on the fringes of London society) who find themselves in the possession of special powers. On today’s midnight binge, we’re taking a look at the world, people, politics, and the production of The Nevers.
Obviously, spoilers!
Tumblr media
THE TOUCHED
After an unprecedented event in London gives women and minorities remarkable abilities, the Touched, as they are called, or at other times, the afflicted. They resort to living at an orphanage because of their turns (or powers) called St. Romaulda’s Orphanage, which becomes a home and sanctuary for the Touched. This sanctuary is sponsored by Lavinia Bidlow, the wealthy benefactor who has ulterior motives behind keeping a close eye on the touched. The sanctuary is run by Amalia True, who not only can see the future but tries to keep her charges safe while harboring her own secrets that she keeps very tight to her chest.
Tumblr media
The Touched are typically women, or individuals, who live on the fringes of society. Their turns differ from one person to another. There is healing, premonition, molecular alterations and manipulation, and the ability to see and manipulate electricity. There is uncertainty surrounding how a turn is chosen for a person, i.e. why does one person see electricity over causing something to explode? Is it similar to the way Inhumans from the Marvel Universe (shows like S.H.E.I.L.D and Inhumans), in which the power is created because the world needs it, as in fixing a lack of balance? Or is it genetics or even personality-based? Or somehow wholly random? Because we sort of know-how, the turns were giving out and even a bit of why.
The manifestation of the Touched flips the hierarchy or more specifically the patriarchy, on its head, and unfortunately because of the kinds of people that ended up getting turns, women, immigrants, and other types of people who live at the fringes of society basically those who are seen as less than or inconsequential in society. This splits people into factions and even radicals, including Lavinia, and the ins and outs of London politics, which is being spearheaded by an ex-military and high government official, Lord Gilbert Massen.
THE GALANTHI
The Galanthi are an alien race who flew over London causing the Touched. Their mission was to give humans the means to save a ravaged Earth. Like how London is split into fractions, so were the military organizations that were against or for the Galanthi doing what they were doing, the Planetary Defense Coalition (PDC) who were for, and FreeLife Army who were against. The FreeLife Army attacked the Galanthi and killed 19 after bombing their project stations. The last station was run by a woman named Zephyr who committed suicide which allowed her soul to be placed on the last ship. Amalia, then Mary, was Touched just as she committed suicide which allowed Zephyr to enter her body and they changed their name to Amalia True.
PRODUCTION
HBO’s The Nevers was announced for a series in July 2018. Whedon became the creator, director, executive producer, and showrunner of the series. A bidding war started between a number of stations, including Netflix, before being picked up by HBO. Executive producers and writers included Bernie Caulfield, Jane Espenson, and Doug Petrie and later Laurie Penny, Melissa Iqbal, Madhuri Shekar, Kevin Lau, Daniel S. Kaminsky, and Hennah Sekandary. In November, Whedon stepped down as showrunner, director, and executive director, stating “unprecedented challenges” and exhaustion as his reason for stepping back. However, he was “deeply proud of the work” on The Nevers. Whedon was replaced by Philippa Goslett as the new series showrunner. Gemma Jackson would serve as a production designer and Christine Blundell as a make-up designer.
CAST
Laura Donnelly (Claudia Black), Ann Skelly, Olivia Williams, James Norton, Tom Riley, Pip Torrens, Denis O’Hare, Amy Manson, Rochelle Neil, Zackary Momoh, Eleanor Tomlinson, Nick Frost, Elizabeth Berrington, Viola Prettejohn, Anna Devlin, Kiran Sonia Sawar, Ben Chaplin, Ella Smith, and Vinnie Heaven were billed as the main cast as The Nevers.
FILMING
Filming, production, and principal photography started in 2019. Locations varied in London, such as Trinity Church Square, Southwark Borough, New Wimbledon Theatre, Charterhouse Square, The Mall, Lincoln’s Inn Fields, Historic Dockyard Chatham, and more. In January 2020, filming took place at the Joyce Grove country house estate; January also saw production and filming temporarily cease because of COVID-19. Scenes had to be reworked to accommodate new rules and regulations because of COVID restrictions, such as the Maladies execution scene, which utilized CGI effects and green screen methods to make it seem like more people within the given space. It also saw the set be rebuilt entirely on a soundstage because they couldn’t film on location. Production and filming were picked up again around September and wrapped up for its mid-season final.
Originally, season one was meant to have ten episodes. However, that was scarped for a two-part season, allowing for a mid-season final at episode six. As of June 11, 2021, The Nevers has not been picked up for a second season, nor has it been canceled.
CONCLUSIONS
I’ve enjoyed The Nevers so far and it was just getting good with its mid-season final. However, the first few episodes were a bit bumpy, and the foundation is built, but it’s taking some time to stitch everything together cohesively. I have hopes for the later episodes and do wish for a second season. I rate the show thus far a 3.9/5, I always give a bit of leniency when it comes to the first season of any show because nothing is really fleshed out. There are very few first seasons of the series I thoroughly enjoyed with little complaint, but I have high ambitions for this show and desire to see it do better.
What are your thoughts on The Nevers? Do you like it, or do you have some issues with the show?
UPDATE
As of December 16th, 2022, The Nevers has been canceled and subsequently pulled from its streaming platform (HBO Max).

So... The Nevers. What's it all about? I've seen your gifsets and my interest is piqued. I 100% trust your taste in shows as you got me into Astrid and Raphaelle last year and am a keen follower of your wlw journeys haha
OMG where do I startttt. First, thank you for trusting me with your choice of shows to watch (and ships ^^). ♥ I always seem to choose the small fandom ships though :D
I call them Truedair but the fandom doesn’t seem to have come to a choice ... On twitter you have TruePenance you also have Trudair and that’s mostly the main ship names. I love “Truth and Dair” and ThunderCloud (when you see the scene in ep 3 you’ll know ^^)
No Ann it’s not Adue and no Laura it’s not Pamalia :D
Tumblr media
Everything under the cut ♥
---------- General ----------
Ok so now ... a general comment about what the show is. Took it from wiki tbh ^^
The series is set in Victorian London and follows a group of people, mostly women, known as the Touched, who suddenly manifest abnormal abilities. Among them are Amalia True, a mysterious and quick-fisted widow, and her best friend Penance Adair, a brilliant inventor.
The Nevers is described as "an epic science fiction drama about a gang of Victorian[s] who find themselves with unusual abilities, relentless enemies, and a mission that might change the world."
At first I'm not the kind of person who loves Victorian London settings BUT this show honestly made me like love it ^^ (sorry youtube for all the Victorian dresses making videos I watched lately and NO I do not plan on creating one it's just ... hyperfixation) I love fantasy, I love sci-fi... so that's why I might like this show. The sci-fi part is the powers but also the big TWIST. (Nope won't tell you about it and yep I was sadly spoiled about it ... I know I shouldn't have went through the tag :D) Oh and also ... SteamPunk energy. I swear, at the start of ep 6 you will be ... Is it the right show I’m watching ? :D
It’s HBO so ... yeah sex and nudity sometimes are a thing. Sometimes it’s kinda dark but it also has humor and amazing lines/quotes.
There’s some White Old Man™ talks especially in the first two eps where they discuss in their closed clubs about the fate of the Touched ... You know :D Boring talks where you wanna rip their throats when they’re talking about woman/Touched but it’s kinda necessary to get the feel of the situation they’re in.
It’s created by Josh Whedon but after what happened in other shows he decided to leave the show after ep 4 and Philippa Goslett took back the showrunner chair. Then you have  Jane Espenson as a writer ... Buffy, OUAT, Jessica Jones, ...
youtube
---------- Soooo the characters ----------
You have Amalia True, the number one main char who has the ability to see glimpses of the future. She doesn’t control it, she doesn’t know when her glimpses will manifest themselves and she doesn’t know when she sees an event that will happen, when it will actually take place. "The most irresponsible, spontaneous, and psychologically broken hero of 19th-century London, and a danger to the British elite. She is dedicated to her cause and never turns down a drink."
Tumblr media
So yeah, you've guessed it, she's the perfect anti-hero, absolutely badass (in a corset and dress nonetheless), dark soul/past character. Who ... weirdly (we all know it and love it in our ships) is all soft and loving when one Penance Adair is concerned. Shocker, right? :D I swear the hearteyes I’ve seen x_x She’s also very protective of Penance. She’s got PTSD and doesn’t like large crowds.
She runs the Orphanage where a great number of Touched are gathered and live as a community. She protects them, she helps some others to get to safety and so on.
She’s played by miss Laura Donnelly who’s perfect for the role and amazing at doing different sorts of accents because, you might have recognized her from Outlander (Jamie’s sister), she doesn’t talk the same way AT ALL in both series. Also I’m in love with her voice in the Nevers I don’t make the rules. She’s 40 but honestly looks way younger. MILF am I right? Also Amalia fighting scenes are amazing and Laura has done the majority of it by herself !
You might have guessed ... I immediately thought of Jessica Jones when I saw her face ^^ But that’s kinda irrelevant here. She’s beautiful and messy and my kinda gal.
Then you Have Miss Penance Adair “Amalia's best friend, and a Touched with the power of 'seeing' electrical energy patterns and a skill for inventing. She is both religious and heretically progressive.”
She’s an amazing inventor, creating all sorts of gadgets for Amalia to fight with :D Our own 007 ... She’s her BeSt FriEnD ... When you know, you know. (Xena flashback ^^) She’s her wife right hand man and goes in the field to help Amalia. They also have this cute dynamic where Penance name an invention and Amalia calls it another way (the right way) and they bicker about it lovingly.
Tumblr media
She’s THE sunshine character. Amalia is the Sunshine protector of course. But we all know who’s the top in the relationship and it ain’t Mrs. True. All her interactions with Amalia are WIVES™. She’s the cutie, she’s the hope and compass of Amalia. She loves to touch Amalia too ♥ Amalia is her idiotic suicidal wife and Penance has to deal with that but she doesn’t love her less. Like Laura said, Amalia loves Penance more than she loves herself. We all know it’s because she doesn’t think highly of herself but also because who doesn’t love Penance.
She’s played by Ann Skelly and has an amazing, lovely, Irish accent (Laura is Irish too but not in the show). And OMG I just checked and she’s only 25 ? She’s 6 months younger than me and I’m kinda shocked because I thought she was at least 28 :D Listen to her saying ‘fabric of the world’ at the end of ep 1 and not fall in love with her I dare you. You’ll fall in love with Penance way before the end of ep 1 tbh.
Tumblr media
---------- Queer rep ??? ----------
They are not canon, I prefer saying it before anyone thinks that they are. (Like Astraëlle)
I honestly thought they would become canon until Laura Donnelly called them sisters in a IG live ... (Honestly the showrunner might make them canon who knows) but like Astraëlle even if they don't become canon I don't even care. Their interactions are magnificent and their relationship is everything that’s good in this world. Like I said, they have the WIFE™ energy, they’ve know each other when the show starts for about 3 years. “You’re supposed to be inseparable.” is an actually quote from ‘the bad guy girl’ (Maladie) or as I could say the misunderstood woman who’s kinda crazy too though don’t get me wrong ^^ But everybody is his own hero in his story. Maladie = Disease in French.
They both have what seems like male love interests too. One for Amalia who honestly I’m not a fan of. He’s cheating on her wife with Amalia so ... let’s not ship them. And then you have an adorable being as Penance’s LI aka Bird guy ^^ aka Augie. He’s a cutie like Penance and honestly if they go that way I won’t be mad.
Now ... the CANON queer rep ... I give them from the top of my head so if I forgot some sorry and please add them in the comments !
Amalia : She’s bi or pan ... given by an info in ep 6. Won’t spoil.
Hugo : pan man, of course we ship him with Augustus (Augie). Give them to me. They aren’t canon.
Won’t spoil it but there’s a repressed (kinda homophobic it feels like or at least not well in his shoes) gay man in the show too who’s as much as a main as Hugo and Augie. I personally am not a fan of him.
Nimble Jack is they/them (probs ?) not sure about it but the person playing them said this : “androgynous trans character” they’re not a big part of the show though so only a supporting char.
You have Bonfire Annie who looks kinda close to Maladie at some point so yeah probs not canon but she seems to be pan too. supporting char too
------------
It has for now 6 eps because it stopped in the middle because of covid but s1 will have 12 eps overall ... 6 more eps will prob come in april or summer 2022.
If you can’t tell, yes I’ve become obsessed with this show and this ship. I love them with all my heart ... They’re blonde x brunette, sunshine x sunshine protector, they’re wives your honor.
OH AND I ALMOST FORGOT ... You’ll see miss Claudia Black in ep 6 and let me tell you I so ship her with an other character ^^

The Nevers on HBO (small spoilers)
Tumblr media
Joss Whedon created "The Nevers" but I'm going to ignore his involvement. Partly because he's a piece of shit, but also because a lot of other people were involved in the making of this show and I'm sure they put their hearts and souls into it. Anyway he only wrote one episode and directed three before dropping out of the show entirely late last year. They're definitely not marketing it with his name attached. The new showrunner is executive producer Philippa Goslett.
Wikipedia calls it an American show but it absolutely doesn't feel like it, probably because it was filmed 100% in England with a UK crew and no American actors (lol ok with one notable exception). The writing doesn't even have that "Americans writing about English people" feel. The writers, producers, and cast are all nicely diverse and predominantly women, which I'm guessing is why it doesn't feel like a Whedon series.
It's kinda steampunky, kinda not. There's definitely some science fiction to it but it mostly stays grounded in a believably historical Victorian London. It's not too Doctor Who or Firefly in tone, is what I mean.
The pilot is surprisingly sober for a story about an outcast populace of "mutants" referred to as the Touched ("The Nevers" is one of those odd titles that isn't ever said in the actual show). It's a mostly chatty hour of our cast coming together to introduce themselves and converse in a chilly manner. Most of these characters are unfriendly, if not downright nasty pieces of work.
The Touched are mostly female and have had odd powers bestowed upon them by...well I won't ruin it, but it's pretty wild and unexpected. Most people consider them cursed and a threat to the status quo. Many of their powers are pretty by the book (invulnerability, super strength, firebending, future sight, etc) while others are more strange. Apparently there are hundreds of them. And since those affected tend not to be male, white, and rich, those who are those three things think it necessary to do something about the Touched.
The cast is a chef's kiss of familiar English TV faces. My favorite grumpy bastard, Pip Torrens (formerly of Preacher and Poldark fame) plays the sinister establishment plotmaster against the Touched, Lord Massen, because of course he does. James Norton does a 180 from his role in Grantchester to play the inevitable posh hedonist who's part of an insidious secret society/pagan sex cult. The one American addition is Denis O'Hare (AHS) hamming it up beautifully as some mad scientist type. I mean there's a LOT of characters and that's barely scratching the surface. I haven't even mention the women yet, who are all perfect.
I watched the pilot twice in a row and yeah...it was really, really good. I definitely think there's some intriguing mysteries in there. It's not silly or insulting of my intelligence. Unlike some shows by Whedon I don't see that "sexy young female character trying to be a kickass feminist icon" thing he does in this. So yay for not pandering to us for once, I guess.

one question about the Nevers, is Whedon's fingerprints all over it?
Hmm, interesting question! I believe once they resume production on the back half of s1, he’s not going to be involved anymore and there’s a new showrunner (Philippa Goslett).
I have a pretty high continuing tolerance for Whedon’s work; while being very disappointed and grossed out by him as a person and a professional, I do really value a lot about his storytelling (the non-Marvel bits of it, anyway, since I never really took to that world) and the kinds of stories he’s told in conjunction with other writers and directors and actors over the decades, and I would still count Buffy, Angel, and Dollhouse as some of my favorite shows ever, so that’s where I’m coming from in terms of whether my stance on the matter will or will not jive with yours/anyone reading this’s!
The episodes of The Nevers that do exist definitely have some trademark Whedon & Co.-y things -- general character types, quippy dialogue, etc. -- but for a show that’s about Victorian women being stigmatized for having strange powers, I was surprised at the show not really leaning on the “Fragile, mentally damaged woman who can also kill you and that’s HOT” trope that he has historically loved as hard as I expected it to. There is an antagonist, Maladie, who’s sort of a Faith+Drusilla mashup -- I have admittedly been enjoying her (Drusilla and Faith were too iconic in my formative years! I had no chance!) -- and her ~turn~ is that she gets stronger when she’s in intense pain, which has some Yikes elements, so that’s kinda a personal call in terms of whether someone would want to watch that. I also think it’s interesting that she isn’t portrayed as a terrifying hottie -- she looks like someone who’s in the situation that she is, which is a pretty significant change from how fragile women have been portrayed in the Whedon oeuvre in the past.
But overall I think that the show, while still leaning on some classic Whedon writing moves, feels more considerate and with-the-times in terms of how it employs them, and I like that there’s a really strong community of women at the center of the story and that the main pairing to (non-canon-romantically) root for is two women who are just everything to each other. There are some other BTVS writers working on it as well and I was excited to see their names involved (Jane Espenson in particular), and I’m looking forward to seeing some of the energy of the Buffyverse continue to be alive in this show without Whedon himself at the helm. I definitely like the idea of this particular show having a woman as the showrunner instead due to the premise, so fingers crossed that this will be a change that will only affect the show for the better. ALSO I LOVE AMALIA AND PENANCE A LOT.

Joss did create and write the first 3 episodes but he exited the show last year and the new showrunner is a Philippa Goslett. You’re right though, I’ve been hearing about his misconduct for years, yea before the recent allegations of abuse but he continued to get work and no one seemed to care. People love to pretend canceling is life ruining and always works, but it’s rare that it actually does.
When it does work, it's not canceling, it's accountability and consequences and that's what we mean when we say cancel culture isn't real.
But I'm happy to know he's not involved in most of it so I don't have to feel some type of way while watching because it is quite...entrancing, this show. These actresses are so engaging. It definitely has my interest.
But yeah, we've learned nothing about Joss recently that we haven't known for YEARS and certainly the industry has known.

This whole time we've been waiting for a change in the world,
but it's not what we thought.
The kingdom is here and now.
What if the people would rise that He would be crowned king, did He ever say this to you?
Because it's not something we can see with our eyes.
It's here within us.
All we have to do is let go of our anguish and our resentment and become like children just as He said.
The kingdom, it can't be built through conflict.
Not by opposition,
not by destruction.
It grows with us with every act of love and care with our forgiveness.
We have the power to lift the people just as He did and then we will be free just as He is.
How does it feel to carry that anger around in your heart? Does it lessen as the days go by?
We have the power to relieve their suffering. It is up to us.
The world will only change as we change.
He gathered us for what was inside.
We were all precious to Him.
We were all his apostles.
