Diamonds form under pressure
From that very wise post that has made the tumblr rounds-
Diamonds are formed under pressure

Criminally Underused Bird Nicknames for Jaskier
I love "Lark" as much as the next Witcher fic reader, but there are so many more options we could explore! Here are a few:
Jay / Bluejay This one has excellent potential because 1) jays are incredibly beautiful, colorful, intelligent, and social and 2) their songs are terrible. (Examples here, here, and here.) As such, it'd be perfect for a fond-yet-teasing nickname for Jaskier. Plus, it sounds like the first letter of his name!
Magpie Magpies are corvids like jays, so they're similar in many ways. This one has the extra connotations of collecting shiny things for bonus fun teasing <3
Sparrow Sparrows have lovely songs! They tend not to be very colorful, but they're very cute and the name sounds endearing. I've seen this one used in fic occasionally and I like it!
Sanderling Sanderling is an adorable name for an adorable bird -- they're little sandpipers that run around on beaches! It works perfectly as a reference to Jaskier's role as the Sandpiper and I think it's really sweet.
Peep Peep is a general term for the smallest few species of sandpipers (they're hard to identify at the species level, so calling them peeps is most convenient). It's similar to Sanderling in that it references Jaskier's role as the Sandpiper and sounds adorable!
Bonus: Songbird I have seen this one used in a few fics and I love it every time! It's vague enough to let you imagine whichever bird you want while also sounding very sweet.
Extra options include, but are not limited to: warbler, finch/goldfinch, nightengale, robin, kinglet, titmouse, mockingbird, and starling.

In retrospect I feel like the Kennedy episode was a huge red flag about his impulses for over dramatization and a general lack of good judgment/taste. I find that episode hard to watch same as I do seasons 5&6.
Lol I remember when the Kennedy episode came out and some of my more obnoxious paler brethren across the Atlantic were all "this is what it feels like, Americans!!! To have your historical figures poorly portrayed by another country!!!"
And it's like well a) we already portray our historical figures inaccurately over here thx b) y'all already portray yours inaccurately over there c) lol I really didn't need an inaccurate Kennedy episode... I would've been down with JFK straight up trying to get Lizzie 2 into bed (though... and I gotta be real.... JFK fucked a lot of people................ but he would never). It wasn't the inaccuracies, it was how DUMB it was. And how incredibly off his impression of the Kennedys was, in a way you really don't need to research much to understand.
I remember thinking of how unbelievable it was that Jackie would apologize for shit talking Elizabeth. Because Jackie shit talked EVERYONE. And she did not apologize to ANYONE, including her own sister, because Jackie knew she was untouchable. Yes, her marriage was rough, in a word; yes, it made her sad that her husband cheated on her; but she wasn't this wilting flower who only said catty shit because she was sad. Jackie Kennedy, and I say this with respect, was an alpha bitch. She was beautiful; she was fashionable; she was blue-blooded; she spoke several languages and was educated and worked a room arguably better than her husband (and they both knew this); she had all his money and, imo, for all their troubles knew he was very unlikely to ever leave her, and also knew there was probably nobody who could give her the type of top dog position and heady success that he could. I mean. Aristotle Onassis had a hard time following JFK, and the man owned his own island.
And I remember being so weirded out by the way he chose to portray both JFK and RFK. Like, don't get me wrong, JFK took a lot of painkillers, but it wasn't like this was some guy on the edge who took them for a ride lmao (Jackie was more about that life, but she still largely had her shit together while in office). JFK had legitimately debilitating chronic pain lmao. Like, Peter, do you get that if you're taking something... for a condition you actually have.... it's not going to give you the same kind of experience as a recreational pill popping but whatever. JFK was considered something of a cold fish in private despite his libido, so the idea that he was just going crrrrrAAAAAZY in the background is insane.
Additionally, RFK was essentially JFK's fixer and a complete control freak, not a submissive force in that relationship at all--more supportive. It was very much a two for one administration. So that bugged me.
I'm not an expert, either, lol. I'm just someone who's gone through nerdy periods re: that family, and it seemed to me that Peter took the most boring cardboard approach that he saw as perhaps... sympathetic? Sad? With a dash of "the true story" and it's like. Honestly dude, go ahead and go in and portray those amoral rich people as amoral rich people living fast and dying young because that's literally what the Kennedys did.

Unpopular opinion… I like Dracula, I like the book, I like all the adaptations that have been made, in their own way, I like Dracula Daily, and I really enjoy how tumblr has got enthusiastic about this old book. …I enjoyed the first year of it anyway. The second year we did Dracula Daily, I saw a lot of weird stuff happening.
My opinion is thus: the application of modern psychology, sexuality, and even narrative tropes and whatever onto this story is just as “inaccurate” as all the old screen adaptations that everyone suddenly hates now for some reason.
I think calling something an inaccurate adaption is appealing because it gives you an objective reason to dislike something - an intellectual high ground. I don’t dislike it because of personal preferences, you see, which would be an illogical, emotional, and invalid reason, no, I dislike it because it’s not accurate, you see, because I am a true connoisseur of the source material in a way all of these old screenwriters and directors were not. And you can’t argue with me, because it is an objective fact that these adaptions include things that are not in the book, so therefore my position is correct.
But here’s the thing. If you adapted Dracula into a movie or a show exactly the way you’re imagining it in your head, it would be just as “inaccurate” when compared to the book, even if you’re hitting all the superficial narrative beats in the book, because you are adding contemporary flavour and perspective to it. You maybe don’t realize you’re doing it, but you are. I like the ways everyone is enthusiastic about interpreting relationships and characterization, in particular I like the way people have interpreted Lucy, who always gets a raw deal in adaptations because she always gets whatever annoying tropes are popular applied to her, be it helpless damsel in distress or immoral slut that gets her just punishment. But it’s still an INTERPRETATION, it’s things you’re pulling from the text and examining with a contemporary eye. The same as any adaptation did.
And that’s not necessarily bad btw. I’ve said over and over that the mark of a good adaption is NOT how close it stays to the source material, and it never has been. Something as classic as Dracula legit NEEDS contemporary reinterpretation to keep it fresh in popular culture. So like. Headcanon away, honestly do, but I just. Can we PLEASE not shit on decades of film history because it’s not specifically palatable to you personally, and act like these weird contemporary takes people have about the narrative are superior because they’re more accurate to the book? Cause they’re not. Superior, or more accurate. They’re just different. Ok?

Okay so apparently there was some french/english back and forth with the Les Miserables musical (the book was written in french, then the musical itself adapted in english, and then adapted back into french if I'm not mistaken) and I began to, of course, compare the different versions of the songs I like ! I tend to prefer the french version, it feels like some things were lost (or gained ?) in translation and I want to talk about it because it makes my brain go :D
Let's start with Javert's suicide !
VALJEAN:
C'est toi Javert! / It’s you Javert !
Tu n'as pas attendu longtemps/ You didn’t wait long
Fidèle serviteur de l'ordre à son poste/ Faithful servant of order/law at his post
Alright so 'ordre' here does mean order but it's also used in a slightly specific/metaphorical context ? Like it very much means the law, 'peace' (as in the one maintained by the state), the status quo.
Cet homme est innocent/ This man is innocent
Only a slight difference here, 'he's innocent' instead of 'he's done no wrong', but f version describes a quality while e version describes action (or lack thereof).
Il a besoin d'un docteur/he needs a doctor
JAVERT:
Je t'ai prévenu je ne céderai pas/ I warned you I won’t give in/yield
Non, je t'arrête/ No, I’m arresting you
F Javert is more forceful here, trying to arrest Valjean instead of reiterating he won't listen to him
VALJEAN:
Une petite heure et je me rends/A small hour and I’ll surrender/give myself in
Je viens régler ma dette/ I’m here to settle my debt
I am paying my debt rather that than it is payed
JAVERT:
Toujours les hors-la-loi/It’s always the outlaws
Qui parlent de justice!/Who speak of justice!
Javert speaks more generally instead of singling Valjean out ('the man of mercy'), implying many outlaws (litt translation of hors-la-loi, which doesn't have the same old west connotation) have had a lot to tell him about justice (they probably had and it was probably a lot more insightful than whatever javert had to say)
VALJEAN:
Vite son temps est compté/ Quick, his time is running out
Litt 'his time is counted'
Pitié Javert/Please/I Beg you/Have mercy Javert
Vite pendant qu'il respire/Quickly while he breathes
Pitié Javert/
Cet enfant va mourir/This child is going to die
Woof so. 'Pitié'. kind of a bitch to translate especially in the context of a song. Pitié means 'pity', or 'mercy', it is also a word used to beg (like 'please' but you wouldn't use it to ask someone ot pass the salt unless it was a life or death situation). So yeah, please i beg you have mercy rolled into a single word. Also, 'this child is going to die' feels a lot more personal and urgent than 'there is a life to save'
JAVERT:
Prends-le Valjean/Take him Valjean
Avant que je ne regrette/Before I regret it
Et surtout reviens/And most importantly come back
24-601
'Surtout' usually means 'especially' but it can be used for emphasis. Like 'Ne fais pas ça' -> 'Dont' do this' 'Surtout ne fais pas ça' -> 'Really don't do this'. Also 'before I regret it' and before I change my mind mean the same general thing but the former is less emotionnaly ambiguous
Qui est cet homme? Quelle sorte de diable est-il donc/who is this man, what sort of devil is he
Pour laisser repartir libre l'homme qui l'a mis en prison?/To let the man who put him in prison go free ?
This is where the differences between the f and e versions really start to pile up. Here Javert is baffled Valjean let him go because of what he javert did to him, and not just because Valjean had an opportunity to kill him (to have me caught in a trap)
Il tenait entre ses mains tous le fils de mon destin/He held in his hands all the threads of my fate
Et d'un seul geste il pouvait changer le sien!/And in a single move he could change his
Il eût suffi d'un seul coup de couteau/It would've took a single slash of a knife
Mais c'est ma vie qu'il m'a offert en cadeau/But it’s my life that he offered me as a gift
The general meaning is kept intact between the two versions (aka he could've killed me but he didn't) but the pace/order specificities vary. Also 'but it's my life he offered me as a gift' as opposed to, yknow. A stab wound. Also the idea of Valjean 'giving back' Javert's life is not explicitely stated, he had it in his hands, and he offered it, gifted it to Javert, like I dunno if I'm being clear ? Like the diff between 'he had my life in his hands yet he gave it back to me' and 'he had my life in his hands yet he gave it to me'.
Un policier ne doit rien au voleur/A policeman owes nothing to the thief
Un policier ne cède pas au chantage/A policeman doesn’t yield to blackmail
This version is more impersonal, Javert implicitely refers to himself by his role ('a policeman'), as opposed to 'Damned if I'll live in the debt of a thief'. Also implies these concepts are not possible, instead of resenting their existence. A policeman can't be in the debt of a criminal as opposed to I refuse to be in the debt of a criminal. Also 'Chantage' has a broader meaning/use than 'blackmail', it can also mean coercion, pressure when used in interpersonal relationships.
Je suis la loi que personne ne bafoue/I am the law that no one mocks
Et je lui crache sa pitié au visage/And I am spitting his pity in his face
Noir ou blanc, hors la loi ou dedans/Black or white, outside the law or within
Noir ou blanc, c'est Javert ou Valjean/Black or white it’s Javert or Valjean
Michale jackson references aside, it refers back to the Confrontation, where Valjean tells Javert 'You know nothing of this world, it is not all back and white'. And 'Bafouer' is another annoying one to translate, it also carries the meaning of 'tarnish', 'besmirch', 'outrage', and is usually used in the context of authority, or honor.
Comment puis-je permettre à cet homme de me souiller de sa bonté/How can I allow this man to defile me with his kindness
Ooooh this one ! I really like this line, as opposed to the english one (how can I allow this man to hold dominion over me). it refers straight back to Valjean freaking out after the bishop was kind to him. His line was 'Pourquoi ai-je permis à cet homme de me toucher de sa bonté ?'/'Why did I allow this man to touch/move me with his kindness?'. And it really sets the parallel between Valjean, who allowed kindness in, acknowledged he had been wrong (that's debatable but for the sake of the analysis), and let this kindness change him for the better. And Javert, who is horrified by this act of kindness that upends everything he belived in, and choses to die rather than let it in, reconsider and change himself. 'Souiller' is a fun word, it means 'to dirty, soil, sully, tarnish, contaminate, defile'. Not everyday you see that paired with kindness. To think that I would enthusiastically analyse that sort of shit i used to hate with a passion in school :'D But I digress
Cet homme que j'ai suivi à la trace je lui dois ma vie et ma liberté/This man I’ve tracked i owe him my life and my freedom
J'aurais dû périr de sa main sans un remords/I should’ve died by his hand without remorse
My translation is a bit sloppy here, it's Javert who would hold no remorse over Valjean killing him.
Je serais mort comme un soldat ce soir j'ai honte de vivre encore/I would’ve died like a soldier, tonight I’m ashamed to live still
Javert makes not mention of Valjean's right to kill him, or his right to die by his hand. He talks about it more as something that should've happened.
Est-ce qu'une âme se rachète? Est-ce qu'un homme peut changer?/Can a soul redeem itself/be redeemed ? Can a man change ?
Peut-on laver ses crimes? Faut-il lui pardonner?/Can one wash themself of their crimes ? Should I/we/etc forgive him ?
A less clunky and perfectly acceptable translation of 'Faut-il lui pardonner' would be 'should he be forgiven', but the former is still very much and active voice. It's just that it's impersonal, hence the I/we/etc.
Faut-il qu'après toutes ces années je laisse le doute ronger ma vie?/Must I after all these years let doubt eat away at my life ?
Ronger is another fun word, it means 'to gnaw', like rodents do, but it wan also mean 'eat through' or 'eat away' like acid does ! Often carries the implication that there will be nothing left. So it's stronger that the e version 'must i now begin to doubt who never doubted all this years', it's 'must I know let doubts destroy my life'.
J'étais de glace, je me vois fondre il n'est qu'une justice et je l'ai servie/I was ice, I see myself melt there is only one justice and I served it/her
Qu'il vienne du ciel ou de l'enfer il ne sait pas/Whether he’s from heaven or from hell he doesn’t know
Qu'en me rendant ma vie, ce soir il s'est enfin vengé de moi/That by giving me back my life he finally took his revenge on me
Took his revenge on me as opposed to killed me in the e version. Similar ideas, less explicit. Also in french, Justice is very much a she (like death) ! So even if gramatically it should be 'it', I dunno, the way javert speaks about justice does feel like it's more than an abstract concept.
Je le tiens mais il m'échappe les étoiles rient dans le noir/I hold/have him but he flees/escapes from me stars laugh in the dark
In the e version Javert reaches out to nothing in particular, into the void, who knows.
Elles se moquent de la victoire sur moi des forces du mal/they laugh at the victory of the forces of evil against me
Idea that is completely absent in the e version ! That is an extremely dramatic thing to say.
Je préfère quitter ce monde qui tolère les Jean Valjean/i prefer to live this world that tolerates Jean Valjeans
Toute ma vie fut une erreur je la retourne au néant/All my life was a mistake I return it to the void
Another extremely dramatic thing to say that is absolutely not present in the e version ! The man is not being poetic or evasive about it, damn.
Well, that was super long but super fun ! There are a couple other songs i'd like to tackle, like 'Master of the house' which in french is full of very fun colloquialisms and informal speech that can be hard to translate in english !

Favourite Colour: purple! it just slaps as a colour!
Currently Watching: does dimension 20 count? if so, i'm tag teaming burrow's end and a starstruck odyssey. if not, i'm watching a show called wolf with the parents purely for reasons of sacha dhawan being unhinged. look the man has never played what i would call a hinged character in his life and i am loving this for him
Last Movie: finally successfully went to barbenheimer part 2: 3 hours of man pain with a pal a couple of weeks ago--we tried it like a month before that and there was only one ticket left. so we just went to see barbie instead (my second time, his first)
Sweet/Spicy/Savoury: on the whole, sweet! i am a fiend for chocolate ngl.... although that said, sometimes i get a craving for salty/savoury (usually hash browns) that supersedes the desire for sweet
Current Relationship Status: single,,,,, perpetually so
Current Obsessions: the fuckign. the fuckign larp thing i did a couple of weekends back. fuck. i had to write something for my character over the last couple of days bc i felt actually possessed. wow. other than that i am currently going insane over fallen london, everything d20, and i am preparing for november when i will once again fall deep into my doctor who emotional hole

So the last couple of Sundays, this young man has been coming into my bookshop to buy books and stare at me. He is adorable, at least ten years younger than me, and he looks at me like I'm some fascinating creature who reads books and (occasionally) watches shows and has thoughts about books and shows and who talks about writing fanfic without shame. And I banter with him because it amuses me, and because yes, my guy, this is what a glamorous nerd in her thirties looks like and you should consider yourself blessed.

And I did the stats! I'm absurdly proud of my little digital fanfic library but it's basically a history of the fanfic I've been reading since I discovered fandom, so I'm putting the graph and more explanations under the readmore, in case you don't care/don't want to see which weird ships I like/used to like (since I won't be tagging the post because I don't want that in the general tags). Proceed at your own risk!
Tumblr media
Okay! So. First off, I've had that collection for almost five years now I'd say, I don't have the oldest dates but that's when I started discovering fandom. I started downloading fics to be able to read on my phone even when I didn't have an internet connection (and downloading fics from FFNet wasn't the easiest), and then when I started using AO3 I thought I'd get the fics I liked in case they disappeared or something. They're all epubs and I can make annotations in my ereader app, which is also pretty cool (my 'copies' of Cambiare Podentes or Pacify are full of notes from multiple rereadings throughout the years and that's very fun) In total I have 1311, which is a respectable number I think.
All the smaller folders - anything 15 fics or less - are mostly old fandoms for which I never read a lot of fic. There are separate Harry Potter and Star Wars folders because those are for gen fics and the ship folders are for, well, ship fics. Fandoms like Sherlock, OFMD or Gravity Falls don't have separate ship folders because they're either 90% ship or gen fics, and a folder for a few gen/ship fics would be useless. The 'originales' folders are original fic, with a PWP variant because sometimes you want to peruse the SFW folder and not the smut one or vice-versa. The older folders are probably the Drarry or Snarry ones, as well as the Sherlock and the Originales ones, because they're the ones with fics in french in them and I stopped reading fic in french years ago to pivot entirely to english.
As for analysing this: I knew what the results would look like, because 1) it's my collection I know what I read and download and 2) I regularly sort the fics I download in those folders, and every time I check the numbers just as a curiosity, but there still was a surprise or two. Notably, the OFMD folder compared to the Obikin folder, because I started reading OFMD fics literally less than a month ago (may 11 to be precise) but I've been reading Obikin fics for close to a year now. Also now that I'm thinking about it my numbers are wrong I know I put a gen fic in the Obikin folder and I didn't go back to put it in its proper folder yet, so it really is the same number of fics, which I wasn't expecting. I also keep thinking the Gravity Falls and Drarry folders are going to be bigger, but no, they're not (especially not the Drarry one, I stopped shipping that and reading fic for it years ago when I got into Snarry) Obviously this makes my OTPs clear, they're the ones I have more fics for (the Sherlock folder is mostly Johnlock and the OFMD one is mostly Blackbonnet, of course). I do find it funny I have more original smut fics than Tomarry and Harrymort combined, but that makes sense too. I gotta say, I have no idea what all the HP gen fics are, because that's a fandom I read mostly ship fics for and almost nothing else, so I don't know where those came from, as opposed to the SW ones (it's because I like fluffy Jedi bonding stuff). The Snarry folder wins - well, everything, but more specifically on top of having the most fics in it, I know without needing to check that it's the one with the most words in it, because it's the one with the most longfics in it: if you just count Pacify and Cambiare Podentes that's already a good million two hundred words, and then there's the fics I have doubles of, all the longfics...
By the way this is the wrong place to put it but I find it fascinating how different fandoms write different formats: I can give you like, 2-3 Obikin long chaptered fics, same with Kylux (most of which I didn't read because they weren't my style, sorry that one aviator Kylux and Lex Talionis I just can't) but for Johnlock or Snarry I could give you a list and still forget some I've read. I don't know if it's the size of the fandom or the age or something but that's fascinating. If that wasn't so long a process and it was useful, I'd write down all the fics I have, their titles and wordcount and fandom, that could be really interesting... but only for me because that would be pretty biased. I mean, I tend to gravitate towards longfics and that's the fics I'm more likely to download, so yeah.
Anyway I think that was a nice ramble, if someone read all this I love you, when's the marriage?

Hello! How did you choose your name?
Your name looked like latin to me, so I tried to look up what it is in english and found that aellopos is a genius of moth, but I couldn't find a aellopos chrysopterus species. Is it a real species that I just couldn't find, or is it something you made up? or is chrysopterus something unrelated to moths?
Hi!
It's not Latin, but it's Greek!
I chose it because of a confluence of factors:
-I was once told to read two novels in verse for a middle school language arts class. Because I refused to take the easy path, I chose the Iliad and the Odyssey, both in translation since I can't read ancient Greek, unfortunately. The thing that stuck with me the most from reading it was the Homeric epithets.
-One of my favorite Greek gods is Iris. Two of her epithets are "aellopos" (storm-footed) and "chrysopterus" (golden-winged).
-Aellopos is a genus of moth.
-Amphiprion chrysopterus is the taxonomic name for the orange-fin anemonefish.
-I am a biology nerd.
So, I chose Aellopos chrysopterus because it was a shoutout to a literary technique I really like, a reference to my personal favorite Greek god, an allusion to two different animals, and not an actual species. Yet. (If another moth is discovered in the Aellopos genus, I am secretly hoping that they will name it chrysopterus and then I can have bragging rights with "they didn't name a moth after me, but I chose the name first!")

Story time!
I was chatting with my kiddo this morning and I realized, I think the movie Akira was the reason (or at least, the beginning point) that I turned into a movie nerd.
So it’s the mid 90s and I’m about 13 years old. You guys have to understand how different things were back then. The internet was just a baby. I can’t even remember if we HAD internet at my house at the time. If we did, it was barely better than an online encyclopedia with a sprinkling of pictures that took minutes to load. On top of that I lived in a small shitty town, and it’s hard for me to express how BORED of it all I was, and how much I craved something interesting and different from the same old shit. The information we had access to was extremely limited.
Also remember, anime wasn’t mainstream popular. Sure, we grew up with some anime, we watched Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball and stuff, but these kids shows were it - a tiny handful of shows for children with extremely westernized and edited dubs. Honestly, I didn’t even put two and two together and realize Astro Boy, which I watched ever weekend as a small child, was actually a *japanese* show until I was a teenager.
So in these dark days, there was a thing called Columbia House. Think of it like the 90s version of a subscription box plus a mail-order-catalogue all in one. They had a cd club, they had an audiobook club, stuff like that. I ordered cds from them for years because it was easier and cheaper to find the stuff I wanted than it was to look in the one single tiny music shop we had in town.
One day I got an advertisement card in my order for a new anime VHS club. I still remember which picture was on it:
Tumblr media
Every month they would send out a movie, and the first one up was Akira. I was curious so I signed up.
I remember being absolutely STUNNED. I had never seen anything like it. It was the first foreign movie I ever saw, it was the first cartoon that wasn’t for kids I ever saw, it was the first time I realized there were really cool things out there if you knew where to look. It was weird and cool and different and I was absolutely fascinated.
I think that was the turning point for me, when I realized movies weren’t just an entertainment to put on and be distracted by for a while. I wanted to find more weird stuff and good stuff and stuff that wasn’t available at the single little mom and pop movie rental stop we had.
I never really thought about that before talking to my kiddo today, and realizing for me it all started with Akira and that Columbia House VHS club.

i've been thinking about my own name journey again and i'm not sure i'm even done with it. i have my first name more or less locked in (unless i have doubts again in a few years and decide to re-add the silent h for whatever reason). it's the middle name (or lack thereof) that gets me.
i don't even know if i want one. but if i do, i'm thinking of either Andrés, Eduardo, Rafael, or Sebastián. idk if i should make this into a poll or not, especially since i might still have a LOT of doubts over the results and how they could affect my decision.
if i were in a spanish-speaking country this probably wouldn't be an issue. or literally any country that doesn't expect literally everyone to have a middle name.
