I feel like prostitution in the hunger games isn't talked about enough. I don't think it carries the full weight that it should. Prostitution in media is more often then not just a woman doing it for money. She's willingly doing it and has a motive and actively gets something out of it.

We are starting to recognize sex work as work. People dont treat prostitution as taboo anymore. We know it happens. But that's not what's happening to the victors. This isn't sex work. It's closer to sex slavery. Even calling it prostitution makes it lose some of the horror.

They have no say in what they do. They don't have bodily autonomy. The only character we really see speak out against it is Finnick. We know it's happened to the others but we don't really get too many details about it. I can say I understand it all I want but it hasn't sunk it just how awful it is. They are bought and sold and used by the capitol.

I'm rewatching Catching Fire, and I just got done with the beach scene. So, when Peeta gives Katniss his gold medallion (that Effie had gifted him), we see that it has a locket with 3 frames with each frame carrying one picture to remind Katniss of her family (i.e., her mom, Prim, and Gale), of what she's fighting to go back to.

And it never fails to amaze me that Peeta uses the token Effie got him as a gift for Katniss. Like he uses it to put up pictures of the people he believes she loves the most. He uses it to benefit Katniss. It's as much a reminder for Peeta of what or whom he thinks are the most important people in Katniss' life and why he needs to get her out of that arena as a victor – other than the fact that he's always been in love with her – as it is for Katniss. The level of selflessness that Peeta exudes is just brilliantly moving. He's honestly the best kind of person to have in your corner.

Also, when Effie gives Haymitch and Peeta the tokens, while giving Peeta his, she makes it a point to say, "the medallion we talked about". So, you mean to tell me Peeta and Effie discussed it beforehand? And you mean to tell me that Peeta probably asked for that locket, of all things? Because he had it in his mind what he'd use it for? I mean, the thoughtfulness he put into this, God. There's a 99% chance that using it for Katniss wasn't just something he thought of after Effie gave him the medallion. He most probably (read: definitely) asked for it because he wanted Katniss to be able to remember why she needed to survive. And he added Gale's picture, too... I mean this boy is just so very pure and selfless and wholesome. When he loves, he loves unconditionally, and without looking for his own benefits.

God, I love Peeta Mellark.

how do i know that the hunger games is a work of pure genius? because when i was young i hated peeta for being too weak, too soft, too much of a deadweight because i wasn't used to seeing male heroes like him in dystopian fiction. now with grown eyes i see how i was fooled into thinking he was any of those things, just like every single character (even the well-meaning ones) in the trilogy, except for katniss.

of course i thought he was a wuss. he was being paraded around for sport, and the image he exuded in the first book wasn't really one that would stereotypically fly in a battle arena, especially one made for entertainment. i was one of them. it was like i was just another mindless spectator in the capitol.

Another thing I find funny about Katniss

Katniss is always on about how she doesn't let people in and she's only easy with Peeta because she's acting for the camera.

But she admits she's only used to Peeta touching her except for her family. Notice how NO ONE else is mentioned here, only Peeta.

Then she just goes around District 12 holding Peeta's hand because... sure there could be cameras in District 12, right? 🤔

I saw something online about how one of the reasons snow Hijacked Peeta was not only to hurt/punish Katniss for her actions but because he saw Peeta and Katniss exactly how he saw himself with Lucy Gray.

And he Hijacked Peeta to force him to “see the worst” in Katniss just as he “saw the Worst” in Lucy Gray during their final encounter in the woods.

I just think it’s pretty cool. I most definitely recommend The Ballad Of The Songbirds And Snakes if you haven’t already, it really gives you a whole new insight on the Hunger Games Trilogy.

I know there a lot of things I would’ve liked to have seen on screen. But one I would put on there is Delly calling out Peeta anytime he’s rude to Katniss.

We all know that Katniss lost the only thing she wanted to keep during the war. Her only goal has always been to care for Prim. But she loses her.

I think the way the series ends guts me so much is because every single victor loses what they started for.

Specifically district twelve victors.

Katniss loses Prim the sister she volunteers for. Strictly speaking this is the catalyst of the story. If she hadn't volunteered none of the rest would have happened. And yet in the end it didn't matter. Whether she won or lost she still couldn't save Prim. Every bit of her trauma feels in vain because she lost the one goal she had. But we as readers know that it was horrible sacrifice that was well worth it. But to Katniss had she known it would end that way I'm not sure she would view it as a fair exchange.

Peeta loses himself. It's an odd thing to say he lost but he did. Snow broke him so fully that he can't tell reality from fabricated memory. He tells Katniss that he doesn't want the games to change him. And yet he does. It's painful. But in the grand scheme of it all a missing leg and a darker personality is the price he pays for Panem's liberation.

Haymitch lost so much. His girlfriend, his mother and his brother. This hurts so much because he did make it back safely. He won and was expecting to go back able to give them food and shelter. He finally pulled them out of the seam. Killing 41 other kids may have messed with him but it's a small price for your family's ensured success. Only once he wins the capitol punishes him for winning. And he loses what he did it for. He has nothing left. Every person he cared for ended up dead. Even his fellow victors. He lost so many people that at the end of the war not even Snow and Coin dying evens the scales.

Lucy Gray Baird wanted to sing with her covey. She wanted a happy life and yet she disappears. Leaving behind a madman that kills everyone and boxes in district twelve. Fencing in the people taking the meadows and Forrest away. No one gets to experience the happy places of twelve safely without punishment of death.

Of course these aren't the only people in the series that make huge sacrifices for the sake of winning the war. Finnick dies, Annie raises a baby without a husband, Mags dies, Johanna loses her family. A lot of the victors die before the war ends.

The hard pill to swallow is justifying the deaths it takes to win the war. It will gut the reader to see everyone fail on a personal level just to win for the future generation.

coriolanus - Coriolanus’ love language is definitely acts of service but towards him. If you ask him if he’s eaten, if he’s taking care of himself, making him a meal if he didn’t eat already, etc. He definitely would melt at how much you seem to care for him. His other love language is also physical touch. He can’t express himself with words often. So to show his care for you, especially out in public, he’d have a hand on your back or an arm wrapped around your waist.

sejanus - this man is a gift giver 100%. he will give you treats that his Ma made or buy you something he thought would look beautiful on you. he would give you many gifts to show that he loves you. he’s also a physical touch person, giving you kisses, having a hand on you whenever he can.

finnick - finnick is such a words of affirmation person. he would compliment you constantly and make sure you know how loved you are. and he would love it when you do the same to him because it shows him that you care for him more deeply than just physical. he needs to know that you’re in it for him and not just his body.

peeta - peeta’s is definitely acts of service mixed with quality time. he would make sure you’re doing good, doing whatever he can to help you, and then he would love to just sit with you while he paints and you read something. he just wants to be by you, enjoying time with you.

katniss - this is a bit of a hard one. i think she could be a mixture of all love languages. but the main ones for me would likely be gift giving (relatively) and acts of service. she would definitely be the type to hunt and give you the animals she hunted to keep you fed. and if you need help with anything, she’d always be the first to help you and never complain, happy to do anything you need her to.

johanna - PHYSICAL TOUCH!! johanna is so touch starved with everything that happened to her. so i think that she would show her love for you by holding your hand constantly, giving you cuddles, laying her head on your shoulder, etc. she’s such a physical touch girlie and i stand by that wholeheartedly.
