How to you keep mouse cages from stinking? We had two mice for barely a few weeks and it didn't matter how we did bedding changes (leaving it alone or changing it constantly), it still stank!

Which sucked because they were probably the most fun to watch of all our pets

The short answer is, I don't. My mice live in my insulated garage away from the house where I don't have to deal with it.

I use a layer of pine pellets under wood shaving bedding, this helps cut back smell quite a bit. In addition I run a large air purifier that helps remove additional odor. If there is a large family of mice at one time, a tiny bit of sweet PDZ or "Stall Dry" can be used in the corners of the enclosure where they tend to urinate more.

However even with all of that, and a dedicated weekly deep clean, you will still smell the mice. They're naturally smelly animals, especially breeding males.

A small group of females in a large cage will stink less, but you'll still notice a stink. They use urine to communicate with each other and also mark their way to navigate their homes and unfortunately this scent is necessary to them while at the same time being offensive to humans.

The only way to really keep them as pets is to keep them as clean as possible while at the same time allowing yourself to accept that there will be a musty smell. Even when I visited a home with only two females in a massive, clean cage I was able to smell mice in the home. They're just pungent little guys

Some old PS1 snowboard game cause why not, FF13 for four dollars, and a METAL COLLECTOR'S EDITION (?) CASE of Perfect Dark Zero. For SIX DOLLARS. it's a lil dinged up but still, hwat the fuck. Yeah I know the reception was "meh", but i'm on an og Perfect Dark kick now anyways (trying to beat it for the first time!) and some gameplay footage of PDZ looked fun enough lol

Sad face. Baker Creek doesn't seem to give a free seed packet with every order anymore. I loved the surprise seeds. Ordered some greens to plant for fall.

After the pic, I put some cardboard over it until they sprout, to keep it from drying out. I've been hosing the cardboard to keep it damp.

The "litter box" in the barn seems to be working. They peed in it all night and morning...I don't usually go to the barn until around noon. Again, thanks for the brilliant suggestion, @pirateking42 !

They're still more flies in here than I would like, though less for them to breed in. If I change the "litter" once a week, should prevent them from hatching in here.

If I keep the PDZ stall refresher on the floor, I need some kind of sifter, so I can sweep up poop, but leave the PDZ behind. It's about the size of scoopable cat litter, but I think they poop might fall through a litter scoop. Hmm.

once again I have Many Wips but I will talk about one I was talking about with the blesties earlier. coffee cup fic focusing on Dot bonding with their Heavy FC teammates and learning how to be a captain! and also about the Talkers on their various coffee cup teams and what that's like for them. and Dot and Workman being Dot and Workman. and Greer and PDZ bonding over not being invited to the tournament and their Complicated Dot Emotions. and some scenes from the Talkers Groupchat as they all stay in touch during the tournament which is going to be very fun to write. and Eugenia getting to pitch. and CV's team winning and how he has to consume the percolated essence of players and how it gives him some of their memories especially P4rker's who also has some memories of Other Parkers and how that's fucked up. there was a lot going on in the coffee cup and that's why this fic is not finished yet lol

Proximity labeling proteomics reveals Kv1.3 potassium channel immune interactors in microglia.

Microglia are the resident immune cells of the brain and regulate the brain's inflammatory state. In neurodegenerative diseases, microglia transition from a homeostatic state to a state referred to as disease associated microglia (DAM). DAM express higher levels of proinflammatory signaling, like STAT1 and TLR2, and show transitions in mitochondrial activity toward a more glycolytic response. Inhibition of Kv1.3 decreases the proinflammatory signature of DAM, though how Kv1.3 influences the response is unknown. Our goal was to establish the potential proteins interacting with Kv1.3 during the TLR4-mendiated transition to DAM. We utilized TurboID, a biotin ligase, fused to Kv1.3 to evaluate the potential interacting proteins with Kv1.3 via mass spectrometry in BV-2 microglia during an immune response. Electrophysiology, western blots, and flow cytometry were used to evaluate Kv1.3 channel presence and TurboID biotinylation activity. We hypothesized that Kv1.3 contains domain-specific interactors that vary during an TLR4-induced inflammatory response, some of which are dependent on the PDZ-binding domain on the C-terminus. We determined that the N-terminus of Kv1.3 is responsible for trafficking Kv1.3 to the cell surface and mitochondria (i.e. NUNDC, TIMM50). The C-terminus interacts with immune signaling proteins in an LPS-induced inflammatory response (i.e. STAT1, TLR2, and C3). There are 70 proteins that rely on the c-terminal PDZ-binding domain to interact with Kv1.3 (i.e. ND3, Snx3, and Sun1). Overall, we highlight that the Kv1.3 potassium channel functions beyond outward flux of potassium in an inflammatory context and contributes to activity of key immune signaling proteins, such as STAT1 and C3. http://dlvr.it/T255lg
