my top albums of 2023
(but i'm cheating, probably, because of course i am)
tagged by @theelast-straw <3
in no particular order except for roughly release date/order in which i got obsessed with each album, i present you: the albums i've had on loop for most of 2023
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
i like to listen to albums from start to finish, i think for the same reason that i tend to rewatch the same movies when i can't sleep (the sense of familiarity) but i'm picking a favourite from each because all of them had that one (1) song i got obsessed with and/or made it into one of my very specific playlists... some even more than one, if i'm honest lol
my world, aespa (2023)
youtube
what can i say about my favourite gg except that i love them so much? their title tracks are always a 10/10 for me but so are most of the sides, and for my world we got some amazing track videos (my favourite was of course i'm unhappy). plus there's the added layer of collecting pcs and the friends i cry about pieces of cardboard with, and while i admit i went a bit overboard during my world and that may be one of the reasons i got overwhelmed and eventually bored so now i'm stepping back from collecting, i still had lots of fun and this was my soundtrack for most of it.
perfume, nct dojaejung (2023)
youtube
my sons and jungwoo, do i really need to say anything else... i was lowkey scared i wouldn't like the mini for some reason and yeah that wasn't a problem, i am still obsessed with perfume lol i think this came out right after i decided i wouldn't buy more physical albums except the ones that i really loved the design of, and then i loved the songs so much that i ended up getting doyoung's box... and eventually two pbs from ktwt because i wanted to make covers out of them, and then never did lol
golden age, nct (2023)
youtube
pado and baggy jeans are my most played songs of the year; wish i could say i've gotten over the brain worms baggy jeans caused but nope, it's still on loop in my mind months later and i fear it's not going anywhere 👖
nil, the gazette (2006)
youtube
so this one is not new... but for some reason in the first half of the year, i think? i got back into the gazette; i've been listening to nil now and then throughout the years but now i also listen to their whole discography regularly. it's like being 16 again but with back pain lol happy to announce nil is still my favourite album of all time, and that i somehow remember all the lyrics! for this one i'm picking cassis because it has been one of my favourite songs since it came out and then cemented its place forever in my heart when i saw them play it live, which is something i'll never forget.
fact check, nct 127 (2023)
youtube
ICONIC MOVE, MY MOTION. i adore fact check, 127 never miss with their title tracks and i always go through at least a few days where i need to play them on loop because they won't leave my mind otherwise... but this time, if i could only pick one song from the album, it'd have to be angel eyes. i don't know if it's the happy 90s boyband energy or what but it's so special to me, makes me happy every time i listen to it <3
ร็อก เล็ก เล็ก, micro (1986)
youtube
we all know when and where this came from, don't we? one thing i'll always be grateful to only friends for (other than sandray both as characters and as a ship) is the music; i discovered so many wonderful songs and artists by listening to the playlists, and of course my favourite was micro, particularly this album which i started to listen to because both อย่าดีกว่า and อยากจะบอกใครสักคน are in it, and while they're still my favourites i really like the rest of the album too.
the land is inhospitable and so are we, mitski (2023)
youtube
i think i discovered mitski back in 2018 when be the cowboy came out, but for some reason i never listened to her music a lot? i had a pearl in my playlists, but it wasn't until laurel hell came out in 2022 that i started to listen to more... and then this year we got this amazing album and she's now one of my most listened artists of all time. my favourite is my love all mine because, like for most of twitter, that was (one of) my sandray song(s).
something to give to each other, troye sivan (2023)
youtube
this album came out right when i was itching for new music and to make more playlists because i was bored of always listening to the same songs. it was kind of a break? not because it's super different from other things i listen to, i don't think, but idk it was exactly what i needed right when i needed it. there's something about can't go back, baby that has always made it stand out to me, but don't ask me what.
to. x, taeyeon (2023)
youtube
mother! taeyeon has been in my life continuously for the longest time; her voice is such a comfort, it doesn't matter if i stop listening to kpop for years (which i've done a couple times in my life because i am that dramatic) i don't think i could ever quit her. honestly the whole album is perfect, no notes, and we even got a live clip for all for nothing. best way to end the year!
not tagging anyone but if you see this and want to do it you can consider yourself tagged <3

Felix was caught up in the 2022 Silly Season McLaren drama which included Alex Palou. Apparently the media was told that Felix would be returning to McLaren, either in IndyCar, or possibly moving him to Formula E where he had last raced before coming to IndyCar with Ganassi Racing. That was apparently not true; McLaren had not officially renewed his contract when it seemed possible that Palou would join the team.
More info
The McLaren drama played out somewhat like a fever dream, Palou ended up staying with Ganassi Racing for 2023, and Felix was given another year with McLaren and the #6 car, while Alex Rossi took over the #7.
Felix Rosenqvist, like many in the IndyCar series, has been racing since he was young, beginning with karting. He even spent a short stint driving in Indy Lights. However, unlike most in the IndyCar series, he had a successful backgound in F3 and in Formula E before joining Chip Ganassi racing as a rookie in 2019 at the age of 28.
Felix is a chill kind of guy who doesn't seem phased by too much. Friends and teammates in IndyCar have mentioned in interviews that Felix is not only friendly, but also very funny. He loves PB&Js and espresso. His social media accounts occasionally show fun glimpses into his personal life but mostly are about racing. His biggest media appearances are usually in Arrow McLaren social media content, where he can be found getting into shenanigans with his teammate and friend Pato O'Ward (whom Felix has nicknamed "Potato"), and even more recently with 2023 teammate Alexander Rossi.

Cadybear's Reviews- #LoveHacks
Welcome to the seventh official Cadybear's Reviews post! Today I'll be talking about #LoveHacks, which I have ranked on the "Gold Tier" at 8 stars out of a possible 10. My last and only playthrough of this series was back in February 2022.
I quite enjoyed this one and found it hilarious.
It seems to get low opinions from other members of the fandom and while it certainly isn’t one of PB’s best works, I think it’s far from being in any of the bad tiers. I will say though, Book 1 felt like one hell of a fever dream. It wasn’t bad or anything, it just felt a little bizarre. The pacing of the plot was just fucking everywhere, and MC befriending Mark’s friends felt very rushed.
I do like that they had a lot of free outfits, especially since I generally found them more appealing than most of the diamond outfits. But I hated that characters (in Book 1 anyways) would throw a hissy-fit when you chose free outfit options. Characters really wanna complain about my new formal fit looking too “plain” when not only do they wear the same shit every day, their own formal fit is the exact same style as my formal wear? Fuck off.
Also, everyone seemed way too hard on Cole for some reason? I think they’re maybe going for a “Shut up, Meg” kind of gag with him or whatever you call that trope…? But… it could get a bit overbearing at times. That trope works best if the character actually deserves it, but some of the stuff Cole got shit for just felt way too innocuous to me? Especially in the earlier chapters, it didn’t really sit right with me.
I definitely think the series picked up around Book 2. There’s much less shaming of free outfit choices, and the plotlines felt significantly more grounded and focused while still maintaining a sense of wild humor. “Unleash the panther” will always be iconic to me.
As a side note, I would consider this one semi-pointlessly genderlocked. Or semi-pointfully genderlocked. Whatever, same thing. On one hand, a fair amount of the story is driven by Martin and TJ being misogynistic to MC, which eventually prompts her to leave ClickIt to start her own blog page with Leah. On the other hand, I feel like a sort of a workplace sexism story could maybe be adapted for a male MC too.
Whereas a female MC deals with being looked down upon because the guys think she’s trying to “redecorate” or “feminize” things at ClickIt, a male MC might be looked down upon for refusing to indulge in their sort of “alpha male” mindsets. Considering it’s unfortunately pretty common for these kinds of people to deem other guys as “low testosterone beta male soyboys” if they stray even the slightest from being stereotypically masculine. I’m just spitballing here, but I do think it's worth exploring how these guys might have treated a male MC.
Overall, it’s good as a “lighthearted chill fun” Choices series with a compelling enough storyline.

Chief Keef & Mike WiLL Made-It Serve Up "Dirty Nachos"
Tumblr media
After spending much of 2023 in the lab, formulating hip-hop's next evolutionary phase, Chief Keef is once again ready for the limelight. Firing the first salvo in what will be a triumphant 2024 for the young icon, Sosa shares "Dirty Nachos," a new single and video created in collaboration with GRAMMY-winning and multi-platinum producer, Mike WiLL Made-It. Floating above the Ear Drummers CEO's chaotic confection of screeching synths and subsonic 808s, Sosa works a clipped cadence, establishing himself as the king of the jungle and casually dismissing his opposition with sly turns of phrase: "Light ya up, L.E.D. strip, n****/Act like you got it locked, you get zipped, n****." In the video, Sosa and Mike WiLL Made-It kick it with a crew that includes longtime associates like Tadoe and Keef's 43B signee Lil Gnar. Decked in Gallery Dept., Sosa whips an Escalade from the Ear Drummers studio to a private jet, throwing down the gauntlet for anyone who can not, or dare not, roll like he does.
youtube
"Dirty Nachos" is part of Chief Keef and Mike WiLL Made-It's previously announced collaborative project, which includes previously released singles like "Bang Bang" and "Status." The 28-year-old rapper is currently hard at work putting the finishing touches on Almighty So 2. The follow-up to one of Sosa's most mind-bending projects (2013's Almighty So, home to hits like "Blew My High") Almighty So 2 follows in the wake of 2022 singles like "Racks Stuffed Inna Couch," "Chief So," and "Tony Montana Flow." The hotly-anticipated Almighty So 2 drops later this year via 43B, Chief Keef's record label, formed in a joint venture with BMG.
Uncountably prolific, yet never seeming to run out of ideas, Chief Keef is embarking on a new chapter of his storied career. In 2022, he announced the formation of 43B, his new record label formed in conjunction with BMG, and signed its first artist, Lil Gnar. The two 43B artists combined for the single “Almighty Gnar,” a beat-shifting banger, and reconnected in 2023 for the fiery "PB&J," which also featured Young Nudy. In December 2021, the rapper shared his critically acclaimed project 4NEM, home to viral single “Yes Sir” and titanic opener “Bitch Where,” prominently used in the fourth season of FX’s Atlanta and recently included in Pitchfork’s Best Singles of 2022 list, and founded his new Web3 venture DigiGlo. Most recently, Sosa collaborated with Sexyy Red on two singles from her Hood Hottest Princess (Deluxe)–"Ghetto Princess," and "Bow Bow Bow (F My Baby Mama)."
Most recently, Sosa teamed up with Lil Yachty for "Say Ya Grace," a highlight from All Is Yellow, the first album by Lyrical Lemonade. The song's Cole Bennett-directed video has already gone viral: the song reached the top 5 of YouTube's Trending chart, and racked up over 3 million views in its first week of release.
With Almighty So 2 on the way and more milestones to achieve, Chief Keef plans to make 2024 his own. Stay tuned for much more.

A Golden Age
It’s been said (by Comics Buyer’s Guide editor Maggie Thompson, or maybe it was comic book writer Roy Thomas) that the golden age of comics is five. Meaning that no matter how comics historians might define the Golden Age of comic books (and the Silver and Bronze Ages), what really matters to the individual comic book reader is the time that they started reading comics. I was probably interested in comic books when I was five years old (this was the mid-1970s, and it seemed like comic books were everywhere then, but I particularly remember seeing them in grocery stores and convenience stores), but I didn’t actually read my first comic book till I was seven.
I wasn’t a great reader at that point. It took me hours to read that first comic book because I was still at the stage in my reading life where I had to sound out every word. (And I probably had to ask my poor parents to help me out with several words per page.) But having spent so much time with my first comic book, I remember it vividly 40-plus years later — it was the 180th issue of The Amazing Spider-Man, a story titled “Who Was That Goblin I Saw You With?” The DC superheroes (Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and pals) were on TV every Saturday morning back then on the Super Friends cartoon. And Super Friends was appointment television viewing for me, but I first saw Spider-Man on The Electric Company, a PBS educational show I watched every weekday afternoon. Spidey was on The Electric Company to encourage kids to read (this version of the character didn’t speak out loud — his words were all presented in on-screen comic dialogue balloons), but Marvel, the publisher of Spidey comic books, surely didn’t mind that seeing Spidey on TV probably encouraged a few kids to buy Spider-Man comic books.
That was certainly the case with me. One morning I asked my dad if he’d pick me up some comic books on his way home from work. He asked me which comic books, and I said “Spider-Man!” And that afternoon Dad brought me home Amazing Spider-Man no. 180. I think he also brought me home a Batman book and, possibly, a third comic. But this was a very long time ago — I don’t even remember if I bothered to read the other book (or books) he brought home that day. (Owning more books than they read is a thing that all book people do, right?)
I still love Spider-Man (and I am not alone — he’s a big movie star now), and I still love Spidey comic books, especially Spidey comic books from the late 1970s. Because that’s my golden age of comic books. I’ve been thinking lately about how, if I’d been enterprising enough to find a job that would hire a seven-year-old in the late 1970s, I could have read all of the Spidey books of the era plus most everything else that Marvel published at the time. These comic books were, after all, generally only 35 cents a piece (about $1.60 a piece in 2022 money). An hour or two of minimum wage work would earn you enough to buy a week’s worth of Marvel books.
They say you can’t go home again. But thanks to the internet (something we definitely did not have in 1978) and services like Marvel Unlimited and Comixology, you can read a whole lot of old comic books. So I decided it might be fun to go back to the month my first comic book hit newsstands (which according to the Fandom.com Marvel wikiis February 1978) and read all (or at least most) of the Marvel comic books of the era in the order of publication. And then I decided if I was going to read all of those comics, it might be fun to write a little about the experience.
Based on a quick survey of a few months in 1978, Marvel was publishing (in the United States) around 40 titles a month in those days. My first thought was to write a comic-book-a-day column (with due respect to Brian W. Collins’ iconic Horror-Movie-a-Day blog) about my Marvel Time Warp, covering a month of 1978 books in a month of columns. But I’d need to read (and write about) approximately 1.3 comic books per day to keep up a month-for-month pace, and I’m probably not going to be able to manage that. Because, if nothing else, I have a bunch of other nerdy hobbies that I like to spend time on.
And I’m also not sure how much I will have to say about some of these comic books. I expect for the first month or two I will have a good bit to say because a lot of these books and characters (at least the 1978 versions of these characters) are new to me. But after that, who knows? Which is fine! So far I’m having a lot of fun (and learning a lot of new things about the comic books of my youth), and I’ll keep on with the reading (and with the writing about the reading) as long as it is fun.
And if you’re reading my writing about my 1978 comic book reading, hopefully you’re getting some entertainment out of this little adventure, too!
In the tradition of many comic book stories of the 1970s, I’ll close out this premiere column with a tease to (hopefully) get you to come back for my second column…

Nichelle Nichols A Star Beyond The Stars
It was a moment that couldn’t have been scripted any better. Actress Nichelle Nichols, who was the first African-American woman to play a lead role on television—Communication Officer Lieutenant Uhura on the popular sci-fi television show “Star Trek” was told one evening that a fan would like to meet her. Assuming she’d face another die-hard Trekkie, Nichols turned to see Martin Luther King, Jr.
“‘I am the biggest Trekkie on the planet, and I am lieutenant Uhura’s most ardent fan,’” Nichols recalls King saying to her. “I didn’t even know how to say thank you,” says Nichols, who, days before, had given notice to “Star Trek” creator Gene Roddenberry that she planned to leave the show. Nichols, who had cut her professional teeth singing and dancing, had her eyes fixed on a Broadway role. When King discovered Nichols’s plans, he was shaken and encouraged her to remain on the groundbreaking series.
“Do you not understand what God has given you? … You have the first important non-traditional role, non-stereotypical role. … You cannot abdicate your position. You are changing the minds of people across the world, because for the first time, through you, we see ourselves and what can be.” Nichols remembers King saying to her.
The pep talk worked, and Nichols remained in her pivotal role until the series ended in 1969. While “Star Trek” may be Nichols most memorable role, she is a skilled songstress and dancer who toured with the Duke Ellington and Lionel Hampton bands. Following the end of the original series, Nichols assisted NASA in recruiting females and minorities to its ranks, including the first American female astronaut, Sally Ride. “I think it’s been one of the most remarkable things in my career … that this one character that was a gift to me … became this iconic image and inspired and impacted so many people’s lives in positive ways,” she says.-(source: pbs)
