**
June 2011
Over three years had passed since that memorable night when you and Freddie took your friendship to a deeper level, and life had carved its unique paths for each of you during that time. Freddie's passion for hockey had taken him on a remarkable journey, when he in 2010, had come tantalisingly close to being drafted into the NHL, a dream that had seemed within his grasp. However, destiny had different plans, and he remained in Denmark. Following this summer, he'd instead made plans on a momentous move to Göteborg in Sweden, which was also a significant step in his burgeoning career.
In the same time span, you had navigated through the tumultuous years of high school, studying subjects close to your heart – history, languages, and the arts. And now, it was time to celebrate your graduation, as you and your family had gathered close friends and loved ones for a joyous celebration.
The garden was adorned with decorations, a pavilion providing shelter from the warm June sun, and a long table adorned with delicious food and drinks. Your father had proudly assumed the role of the day's BBQ master, with your brother eagerly assisting. After all, it was Tom’s graduation too, and though you had attended the same high school, you had followed different paths. He was the athletic, football enthusiast, while you had immersed yourself in the world of academia and creativity.
The party buzzed with life, a vibrant mix of laughter, music, and animated conversations, and amidst the festivities, you and Freddie found yourselves drawn to each other, your connection as strong as ever. Despite the physical distance that had separated you for several years, it felt like no time had passed at all. You rekindled your friendship, sharing tales of your respective journeys, laughing, and weaving memories into the warm summer air.
As the night wore on, and most of the guests had departed, only a select few remained – your brother Tom and his friends, your father, Freddie's parents and siblings, and a couple more close friends. You and Freddie settled into a garden lounge furniture, sipping beers, and continuing your conversation.
However, there was something you needed to share, something that had been lingering in your mind throughout the evening, and with gentle deliberation, you leaned closer, your voice soft and tender as you whispered into Freddie's ear, "Can I show you something... in my bedroom?"
A smile danced upon Freddie's lips, his eyes filled with a mix of intrigues and anticipation. He nodded, and together, you ventured to your bedroom, driven by a curiosity that had been simmering beneath the surface for too long.
After gently closing the door behind you, Freddie took a seat on your bed, facing you, and your lips pressed together lightly, hesitation lingering as you struggled to find the right words. But a growing desire urged you to speak your mind.
"So," Freddie began, breaking the silence, his honey-glazed eyes locking onto yours, an almost innocent smile gracing his sweet ginger face. ”What did you want to show me?”
"Actually," you started softly, your voice quivering as you uttered the words, "it's not something I want to show you... it's more something I'd like to do."
Freddie's expression shifted, a spark of understanding flickering in his gaze as he caught on to your intention.
"You mean..." he inquired; his curiosity evident.
You responded with a gentle nod, your lower lip lightly caught between your teeth, a mischievous glint in your eyes. "I want to cut a lightning bolt in my cap," you playfully revealed, taking a small step closer to the large figure seated on your bed.
His breathing began to deepen, your name escaping his lips, as he sought clarification. "You're sure?"
Once again, you nodded, your head moving with an air of confidence. "Let's just simply call it one friend assisting another?"
Freddie’s smile grew wider, as you gently came to straddle him on the bed, your hands snaking around his neck, and slowly closed the gap between you, connecting your lips.
The kiss started off soft and gentle, your lips moving together, breaths stolen in the sweet exchange.
Freddie's lips felt so familiar, you'd almost forgotten how darn good they felt, and how much you'd missed the easy comfort that came with being around him.
Sure, you’d spend time with other boys since you lost your virginity to Freddie. You’d even date two guys during your time in high school. But they’d been nothing compared to him. They were funny and sweet, but it mostly just felt like good company. The sex had been just fine, and you’d explored areas to gain more experience and find out your likes and dislikes.
But this was still something else. You didn’t need to pretend to be someone else, or act in different way. With Freddie you could simply relax, and ease into his touch. And so, you did.
His hands came around your body, to gently cup and squeeze your ass, as you’re your tongue smoothly entered his mouth, and he greeted you with eagerness. Your hands travelled to his fiery red hair, tucking it lightly, which earned soft moans from Freddie.
“Lay down,” a seductive whisper escaped your lips, your eyes locking intensely with Freddie’s. And he did as you told. Slowly he moved up your bed, resting his body on your duvet and placed his head on the pillow.
“You’re sure you want to do this with our families just outside?” he asked with a cheeky grin across his face.
You returned his playful smile and simply nodded. “I’m sure,” you offered a wink. “Besides, Tom will probably make sure no one will disturb us.” Your voice was soft and almost husky, as you moved your hands slowly up Freddie’s legs and came to the hem of his trousers.
“I’m supposed to rely on your brother to stand watch as I have sex with his sister?” he raised an eyebrow, looking down at you, as you started kissing his skin just above the fabric.
You simply hummed in response before lifting your gaze to meet Freddie's stern look. "Don't worry," you assured, "he already knows, and the fact that he hasn't killed you yet suggests he's okay with it."
Freddie accepted your response and leaned back, relaxing his head.
Skilfully, you unbuttoned his trousers, zipped them open, and lightly pulled them down with a little help from Freddie, so you could tuck them all the way off. You then returned to kiss him, though this time you’ve moved to his inner thighs, causing a few soft moans from the man beneath your touch.
His look intensified, as you moved to kiss his length through the fabric of his boxers, and you could see and feel how it gradually became harder with every touch of your lips. And with a confident smirk, you then tucked your fingers under the hem of the boxers, and dragged them down as well, releasing Freddie’s cock.
Tender moans came from the ginger as his sensitive member was met with cold air, but they only grew louder, when you then came to embrace it with your warm mouth.
“Oh fuck.” Freddie’s voice was husky and almost trembling, as you took him down further and hollowed your cheeks around him. And you knew you had to hush him, as there was still a risk of someone overhearing.
As you bopped your head, covering his cock with saliva, and stroking the part your mouth couldn’t reach with a gentle hand, Freddie’s breathing became heavier and more incoherent. You could the muscles in his thighs flexing, and you knew he wouldn’t last much longer, if you kept going. And having the need of also feeling him inside of you, you released your mouth of him with a soft ‘pop’.
As the cold air once again met his sensitive skin, he let out a big sigh, calming down as he had been so close to a release. Not that he really minded all that much. He wanted to feel himself inside of you as well. And a smile adorned his face, as you made your way off the bed, and took off your summer dress, without losing the cap on your head.  You then discarded your fine lacy underwear, before you went the nightstand and took out a condom.
Freddie’s hand gently reached out to take the small package from you, and as he ribbed the foil package open and wrapped up his member, you gently came back onto the bed, and once again straddled him. After letting out a few breaths, while stroking his cock gently, you moved to rub your folds along the length, earning a few soft moans from you both. You then sat comfortable on your knees, lined up the tip with your entrance, and slowly lowered yourself onto him, your tight walls embracing his cock.
The room was filled with your harmonising moans, as you both were unable to contain the sounds completely. And with satisfied smiles, you then smoothly started to roll your hips, supporting yourself onto Freddie’s pale chest.
Your movements were gentle and slow at first, but as Freddie came to meet his hips with yours in a synchronised movement, you increased your speed.
Breaths were heavy, as you dug your nails into his skin, and his hands came to support your hips, gently supporting you. You cursed under your breaths, as you felt his cock keep hitting a very sensitive spot inside of you, and you almost had to shut your eyes close, as the feeling of your release came closer.
Freddie then came to sit up, only causing you to moan out louder as his cock twitched inside you, and he grabbed a hold of your body to support you.
Your lips clashed onto each other for a quick sloppy kiss, as you kept rolling your hips. His hands remained on your hips, your head falling into the crook of his neck, as your nails duck into his shoulders.
“Freddie…” you breathed into his skin.
“Me too,” he coaxed gently into your hair, “Come with me.”
Muttering your name in a hot, heavy breath, Freddie pressed his fingers deep into your body as he rocked his hips in what would be the final blow that would draw you to your orgasm. He held you tight as you quivered and came around his cock, the pressure brought by your pleasure brought him his own.
Without exchanging any words, you both slowed your breathing, holding each other tightly, and allowing yourselves to come out of the euphoria. With warm smiles, you turned to look at Freddie, and your foreheads met, a silent acknowledgment of the profound connection you had just shared. His presence was a balm for your soul, a comforting familiarity that you had missed dearly.
"So," he softly spoke, his voice filled with a warm affection, "let's cut that lightning bolt into your hat."
You shared a few chuckles, as you gently moved off his cock, and went to your desk to collect a pair of scissors, meanwhile Freddie took the time to discard the condom into a nearby bin. Seated closely together on your bed, you delicately snipped a tiny lightning bolt into the fabric just beside the square on the inside of the cap.
A smile of contentment adorned your face as you completed the cut, a symbol of the perfect moment you had shared with Freddie once again. To you, this wasn't just a foolish gesture; it was a cherished memory created with your oldest and dearest friend. Someone you had missed profoundly, and whose presence in your life felt more fleeting with each passing day.
You exchanged meaningful glances, and then you carefully returned the scissors to their place before donning the hat. It was a subtle reminder of the unique bond you and Freddie shared.
"Perhaps we should head back to the party?" you suggested, your voice tinged with a hint of shyness. And with a nod from Freddie, you both began to dress, ensuring you looked presentable to re-join the festivities.
2012
The following year brought about a noticeable shift in the dynamics of your friendship with Freddie. Despite him not being too far away in Sweden, the physical distance began to weigh heavily on your connection. This was compounded by the fact that you were both entering the real world, focusing on your respective studies and the uncertainties of life ahead.
Then came the pivotal moment in Freddie's life when he received the call, he had long awaited. He had been drafted to the Anaheim Ducks, a monumental milestone in his hockey career, which was nothing, but a dream realised, the culmination of years of relentless hard work and unwavering dedication. The prospect of playing in the NHL was exhilarating yet came with its own set of challenges. But Freddie was undaunted and ready to embrace this new chapter, knowing that his journey was only just beginning.
Amidst the excitement of Freddie's achievement, a small part of you couldn't help but acknowledge the impending void that would be left by your best friend's absence. And this time, the distance felt even more daunting. However, as a true friend, you masked your own emotions and showered him with nothing but love, affection, and unwavering support for his remarkable accomplishment in his career.

A quick explanation of the graduation hat traditions
Largest and smallest hat measures give beers to the class
The last exam grade is written in the gold logo in the front of the hat
The significant other writes their name in the gold logo in the front
A triangle is cut into the hat's sweatband if you watch the sunrise after a party
Naughty agreements are written on the inside of the sweatband
If you score 12 (top grade) in the last exam subject, you must run after the student bus/truck to the first stop
One's best friend must bite the shadow as a sign of eternal friendship
A square is cut into the sweatband if you drink 30 beers (or other alcoholic beverages of 0,33 cl) within 24 hours

20 (or so) Questions with Karla Reyes
Let's catch up with this recently heartbroken artist! Has she fallen into the depths of despair or will this just inspire a really good breakup mix?
Tumblr media
Interviewer: Karla, thanks coming in for a more in depth chat. Let's start with your birthday – you're a Pisces, right?
Reyes: Yeah, that's correct. And my birthday is March 5th.
Interviewer: Any nicknames you go by?
Reyes: Nah, I like to keep it simple – just Karla.
Interviewer: Fair enough. What are some of your good traits?
Reyes: I'd say being laid-back is one of them. It helps me navigate life's twists and turns. Oh, and being approachable. People tend to feel at ease around me.
Interviewer: Admirable qualities indeed. And how about some challenging traits?
Reyes: Well, being too laid-back can sometimes come across as indifference. It's a fine line to balance.
Interviewer: It's all about finding that sweet spot. Any hobbies outside of your art?
Reyes: Music is a big part of my life. Currently saving up for a DJ setup – it's a part-time passion I'm looking to explore.
Interviewer: Exciting stuff. What’s your greatest strength?
Reyes: Versatility, for sure. I can seamlessly switch from one artistic medium to another, keeping things interesting and fresh.
Interviewer: Adaptability is a valuable asset. And your biggest weakness?
Reyes: Post-breakup, I've been avoiding places with memories. I guess you could say that I don't really like when things get complicated. It's a recent challenge, but I'm navigating it.
Interviewer: Understandable. Describe yourself in one word.
Reyes: Chill.
Interviewer: And how do you think others see you in one word?
Reyes: Approachable.
Interviewer: Moving on to fears. What’s your greatest fear?
Reyes: Losing my friends. I fear that my need to constantly be relaxed makes me avoid any and all tough situations. It's not that I don't want to be there for my friends, I just don't know how.
Interviewer: Valid concern. Top priorities at this point in your life?
Reyes: Healing and growing post-breakup, focusing on my art, and saving up for that DJ setup I've been eyeing. It's all about balance.
Interviewer: Family time – tell me more about yours.
Reyes: I actually grew up in the city. My parents run a Chilean bakery in Hell's Kitchen. They make mostly empanadas and sweets, and thank god they can cook since I can't survive in the kitchen. I have three siblings two older sisters, Zoe and Catalina, and my little brother Dante. My sisters moved to Miami and started their own boutique and my brother is in middle school. I think that coming from a full house everything was always super lively! *starts to get animated, talking with their hands* Some one was cooking, music was playing, we were dancing, there was always something going on. We're all really close so I look forward to when the holidays come around, and we all get together and either stay here in New York or visit extended family in Chile.
Interviewer: That sounds like a really fun way to grow up. Future goals – what's on your agenda?
Reyes: Becoming a skilled DJ, expanding my art, and finding that perfect balance between, and working on myself. I want to become better at dealing with conflict so that I can better pursue my ambitions.
Interviewer: Well-rounded ambitions. How would you spend a rainy day?
Reyes: Probably indoors, surrounded by my art supplies or creating some new mixes. Maybe haves some friends over, order takeout, and collaborate.
Interviewer: Favorite book?
Reyes: "The Alchemist" by Paulo Coelho. The journey of self-discovery and following one's dreams – it resonates with me.
Interviewer: Powerful choice. And your favorite movie?
Reyes: "Amélie." The whimsical nature and artistic vibes in that film always captivate me.
Interviewer: Lovely. Any dark secrets?
Reyes: No dark secrets here.
Interviewer: Mmm, I bet. What would you say is your best physical feature?
Reyes: I really like the top half of my face. My eyebrows are super thick, the light brown color of my eyes, and my lashes are straight but pretty long.
Interviewer: I couldn't agree more. So, what about your least favorite feature?
Reyes: It depends on the day, but sometimes I wish I had a more defined cupids bow on my upper lip.
Interviewer: Lastly, how would you describe being in love?
Reyes: I'm honestly not sure if I can answer that question. In my last relationship everything felt right. They were my best friend and we had so much fun together but whenever things got weird or complicated I would just sort of shut down. I think that I need to figure myself out before I can really start thinking about love again.
Interviewer: Wow that's actually super mature of you, Karla. Thanks for sharing more about your life and aspirations. Excited to see your artistic journey unfold and your DJ dreams come to life!

THE SKRUNKLIES TAKE OFF
by @skrunklepng @flowerphysics and @yukiitsukii
this was a huge project guys!! it took a total of 15.5 hours to draw this over the span of 3+ days on top of work, and i couldnt be prouder of us!!!
not only have i made this amazing poster recreating the Scott Pilgram Takes Off poster, but @flowerphysics has created our very own 🎶playlist🎶 for the skrunklies based off this poster!!
find out more about the characters below 👇
here we have Ally and Sorren!
Tumblr media
These are the main characters of our world we call The Skrunklies. They are whimsical, artistic, and are constantly up to shenanigans!
Ally loves all things art, but her biggest passion is music and dance. Shes been a ballerina for most of her life, taking her craft very seriously to the point of burnout, all the way until she met her new best friend Sorren!
Sorren, who only came into consciousness very recently, is a guy who knows nothing of the world he lives in and navigates life through winging it constantly. His inability to overthink or plan things properly was a huge change of pace for Ally, but seeing him thrive and live life to the fullest inspired her to have more fun and let the winds of change take over.
Here we have Io! (E-oh)
Tumblr media
Io is a girl surrounded by mystery. Straying a little far from home and finding herself in a bustling city, she was quickly overwhelmed and in desperate need of help. Found by Ally and Sorren, she was taken in and befriended, and is often drawn into the two's shenanigans. Not much is known about Io due to her being very withdrawn, but she is a beloved member of the group!
Here we have Lapis and her bandmates Roddy and Kyle!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lapis is the leader and creator of Community City's fan favorite band, Naughty Strawberries!!! Lapis is very strong and confident leader, and her dream when she was young was to make it big in a band of her own. With her best friend since middle school, Roddy, they started the band with their very own Kyle Fletchers and another member who has since left.
Lapis is the leader of the band, planning events, writing lyrics, and plays bass, although she knows how to play guitar too. Her passion for the band keeps her busy and happy in her life!
Roddy plays the drums and is the heart and soul of the three. He loves to make music, and while he supports Lapis and Kyle in their dreams to make it big in the scene, he is beyond content with being and playing with his friends. No matter what happens, he just wants the band to stay together.
Kyle is the lead singer and guitarist after the fourth member had left for a more popular band. Kyle is very passionate about making it just as big as the rival bands, if not bigger. Driven by his goal for success, he takes the band a bit too seriously sometimes and can butt heads with Lapis, but he in undeniably an important part of the crew.
Naughty Strawberries has a very versatile sound, leading to their growth happening very quickly! While playing at a royal ball event, Lapis saw Ally, Sorren, and Io in the crowd.
Here is Otto!
Tumblr media
Otto is Lapis' twin sister, and theyve been extremely close their whole lives. Both have been very skilled in the arts, but Otto took the path of tattooing. As both of their passions began to take off and grow, Otto found themself traveling across Tierra, providing beautiful pieces of works to clients of all types. After a few short years of travel Otto decided to settle down in Community city, helping to advertise Lapis' band, and has opened their own local tattoo parlor.
One day while Sorren was discovering the world of tattoos, he met and befriended Otto quickly. Otto invited Sorren and his friends to see her sister live at a super big event at the nearby castle. This is how Ally and Lapis were introduced, and after a ton of pining the two became a strong and endearing couple (thank you Otto 💜)
Here is Ophelia!
Tumblr media
Ophelia is a girl with a deep dark secret, she can see demons and talk to them, but nobody else can. Constantly surrounded and being whispered to by these creatures, Ophelia finds it hard to communicate with others, but theres one thing she truly loves doing, going to concerts! Her all time favorite band is Naughty Strawberries, and shes been to every concert since their debut.
At many of the converts Ophelia saw Otto, the band leaders sister, and slowly began to develop and crush on them. Ophelia is really shy though, and has never opened up to Otto about her feelings, but after getting to hang out with Otto through a friend of a friend, shes developed a really close relationship with them and hopes one day to confess her feelings
Here is Skrim and Ellie
Tumblr media
Skrim is friend of Ophelia's, having met at his job at the Pixel Berry Cafe, previously known as Ellie's Strawberry Delights.
Ellie is a succubus and her passions lie in protecting the succubi and incubi of Community City, and running her strawberry themed cafe! Shes mysterious and charming, and took in Sorren Ally Io and Skrim like family, having them work at the cafe.
Ellie and Skrim's lives holds a lot of dark secrets. Ellie harbors murderous Succubi and Incubi under her cafe as a way to protect her people from the laws that dont align with their lifestyle, which includes Skrim. Raised to kill his prey, hes known nothing but the overwhelming urge to survive. Ellie took him in as a nephew to show him a kinder world, where he struggles greatly to meld with the charming and happy go lucky vibes of the city he never knew.
As edgy as he is, he truly loves and appreciates Ellie for the life she has given him, and since Sorren Ally and Io started working at the cafe his heart has opened up and a tiny little spot in his heart yearns to learn and love more
Heres Zoe, Zorro, and Adrian!
Tumblr media
Zoe and Zorro are a pair of twins with some rich history with Ally.
Zoe, along with Ally, was in a private ballerina school as a young girl. While Ally worked hard and excelled, Zoe had this one sided rivalry with her. The more Zoe focused on Ally rather than practicing her craft, the more she began to fall off and was eventually let go by the campaign. Infuriated, Zoe blames Ally for her failure, and this resentment has built till this current day.
Zorro is Zoe's twin brother, and he really doesnt have much going on for him besides his puppeteering. Zorro loves to build puppets and manipulate them with string, but otherwise he only hangs out with his sister Zoe, who loves drag him along everywhere.
Adrian is a mysterious goose found by Zoe at a young age. Despite seeming to be a normal goose, Adrian has a deep dark secret. He used to be an evil creature, but was cursed to live the rest of his days in this feeble goose body.
This is Corvus
Tumblr media
Corvus is another mysterious character. While on the trolly to work, Sorren was approached by Corvus. It had been many months they had been taking the same ride and Corvus had something to say. To Sorren's surprise Corvus was suddenly confessing his attraction to him. Bewildered and having never felt such feelings before, him and Sorren had talked things through for hours on that trolley, totally missing work. In the end the two decided to date, and are now madly in love!
Corvus finds Sorren to be the most beautiful creature hes ever seen. He has a huge soft spot for him, which is a juxtaposition to his every day life where his job is to work along with Community City's peacekeepers by tracking down rowdy citizens.
THERES TOO MANY CHARACTERS GUYS ILL LINK A PART 2 COMING ASAP!!

Title: "Hell-Bent Hippies"
Episode Summary: In this classic Columbo episode, the brilliant but unassuming Lieutenant Columbo finds himself investigating a murder within the vibrant and eccentric world of 1970s counterculture. Titled "Hell-Bent Hippies," the episode revolves around a seemingly peaceful commune where free love, alternative lifestyles, and a shared sense of community coexist with hidden secrets and simmering tensions.
Plot Ideas:
The Flower Child Murder: The murder takes place during a chaotic and colorful outdoor music festival attended by the commune members and hundreds of other festival-goers. Amidst the peace, love, and music, someone's life is tragically cut short. Columbo must navigate the drug-induced haze, eclectic personalities, and loud music to uncover the truth.
The Missing Guru: The commune is led by a charismatic guru who goes missing under mysterious circumstances. As Columbo investigates the disappearance, he stumbles upon a web of deceit and conspiracy, with multiple commune members vying for control and concealing their involvement in the guru's disappearance.
The Artistic Alibi: The murder occurs in the commune's art studio, where various members create their unique masterpieces. A painter claims to have been absorbed in her work at the time of the murder, but Columbo notices subtle details in the paintings that seem to contradict her story, leading him to dig deeper into the art scene.

The Contraband Conspiracy: The commune is suspected of harboring and distributing illegal drugs. Columbo's investigation into the murder reveals a larger operation involving drug smuggling and a network of dealers within the counterculture movement, making the case even more convoluted.
The Groovy Cover-Up: The members of the commune attempt to cover up the murder with a series of elaborate and far-out alibis, using their unconventional lifestyle to their advantage. Columbo must see through the smoke and mirrors to uncover the truth.
The Hippy Heist: The murder is linked to a rumored hidden treasure on the commune's property. As Columbo delves into the murder investigation, he discovers that the treasure is not just a legend, and several commune members had motives to kill to keep it a secret.
The Time-Traveling Detective: Columbo's old-school investigative methods clash with the commune's New Age beliefs. The episode humorously explores the generation gap between Columbo and the hippies, with the detective using his timeless intuition to solve the case.
The Peaceful Protest: The murder occurs during a protest rally organized by the commune against a nearby construction project they believe is harming the environment. Columbo must untangle the murder from the protest politics while dealing with passionate and idealistic suspects.
The Sound of Death: The murder is witnessed by a commune member who is a talented musician. Columbo's investigation centers around deciphering the cryptic song lyrics and musical compositions created by the witness, leading to a surprising revelation.

Bio
As she headed off to nursing school, following in her mother’s footsteps, her brother was nowhere to be found. Instead of dwelling on their fractured relationship, she tried to distance herself from her famous sibling. It was easier to avoid the topic altogether, rather than confront the painful reality that she didn’t know/understand what caused the rift between them.
That rift seemed insurmountable when their mother became ill. Swallowing her own pride, Sofiya attempted to reach out to her brother for support, but to no avail. It had been too long, their lives too separate. After her mother passed, she tried her best to move on, even though the hurt and bitterness lingered.
Having gone through the difficult experience of caring for her mother in her final days, she realized how important it is to have someone by your side who knows what to do at the end of someone’s life. With a deep desire to be the support she didn’t receive, and to save people from facing the same uncertainty and loneliness she did, Sofiya became a death doula. Her natural compassion and personal understanding of death made her a perfect fit for the job, and she found fulfillment in  helping people navigate their final journey.
Sofiya's father passed away when she was young, leading her to become fascinated with death and superstitions. This resulted in her not having many friends her own age, but her brother and his friends always protected her. The two of them had plans to move to LA and become a famous brother-sister duo, but Sofiya broke her leg and was forced to stay in Aurora Bay while her brother pursued his dream.
After high school, Sofiya followed in her mother's footsteps and became a nurse, even though it was emotionally taxing for her. She thought she was doing well, but after her mother's sickness, which became her life, Sofiya feels like she lost who she was.
Despite the hardships, Sofiya has found solace in her hobbies. She has an encyclopedic knowledge of superstitions and folklore, which she uses to comfort people who are grieving or anxious. She's also a bit of a conspiracy theorist and loves to read up on strange and unusual phenomena, such as cryptids and UFO sightings.
Sofiya's passion for vintage fashion has led her to become a regular at thrift stores, where she finds unique pieces for her wardrobe. She also has a green thumb, something she learned while caring for her sick mother, and often tends to her garden.
Sofiya is known for her honesty and cannot tell a lie, which sometimes gets her into trouble. When she's nervous, she knits as a way to calm down. She's also a huge fan of horror movies and loves to dance to retro music.
Head Canons
-Sofiya is no master in the culinary arts. In fact, she once almost burned down her entire apartment building trying to make instant pudding. The firefighters who responded to the 3 AM alarm were far less amused than she was, as were her neighbors.
-After the death of her father, Sofiya became the glue that held her family together. Despite her young age, she stepped up to take on the role of mediator and support system for her family during their time of grief.
-Sofiya's knitting skills were born out of an unexpected encounter. After a Tinder hookup left her stranded at his house when he fell asleep, she ended up spending the night with his mother, who taught her how to knit. While Sofiya is only proficient in making scarves, she turns to the craft as a stress-relieving activity.
Wanted Connections:
Platonic: her older brother's high school friends / former coworker (medical field)/ childhood friends / dance partner / old hook ups mom Romantic: high school flame/ one night stand / tinder hookups / former blind dates/ enemies to lovers (bonus points if they are neighbors)

Klaine one-shot “Artistic Differences” (Rated NC17)
Summary: Kurt and Blaine have known each other all their lives. They've loved each other almost as long. But as Blaine uses his love for Kurt as inspiration for his music, Kurt has yet to reciprocate. And since painting is Kurt's entire world, Blaine is worried about what that might mean for the two of them. (2703 words)
Notes: I had been writing this for the @klaineadvent Drabble Challenge 2020 prompt 'opinion'. I finally finished it. Wee! XD
Read on AO3.
Baby, you're not alone...
'Cause you're here with me...
And nothing's ever gonna bring us down...
'Cause nothing can keep me from lovin' you...
And you know it's true...
It don't matter what'll come to be...
Our love is all we need to make it through...
Blaine stops singing when he notices an echo haunting his lyrics, lingering on the high notes for longer than written. He listens with eyes closed, smiling at his keyboard.
His boyfriend Kurt, humming behind the melody.
Blaine has been ironing this song out for the past three hours now but Kurt hasn't complained once about the constant stopping and starting.
He never does.
Blaine peeks over his shoulder as he continues to play with the harmonies and watches Kurt, focused on the canvas in front of him, swaying to the rhythm of the music, happily sandwiched between his two passions - art and music.
It's a mild and sunny Saturday - a whole day devoted to cleaning up commissions and tying loose ends on weekly projects before their one day off together. Blaine and Kurt share a studio space - normally unheard of for an artist and a musician, but they make it work. It helps that they've known one another for so long that being alone together is the same as being alone with themselves. That also means they get the inside scoop on what the other is working on long before the public does.
And what they're not working on, which has begun to bother Blaine.
Blaine adores everything his talented boyfriend comes up with. Even regarding his more controversial works, there isn't a thing Kurt has painted that Blaine finds objectionable. Kurt puts his heart and soul into every painting, no matter who it's for, and no matter the subject. A writer from Artforum once wrote: "Kurt Hummel goes beyond the veil to showcase not just the external, but the core of every subject - their drives and motivations. It pairs nicely with the transparency of his own soul, which shines through the gouache and the gesso to leave the viewer with a tangible piece."
And therein lies the root of Blaine's problem.
A glance at one of Kurt's canvasses and the world knows everything it needs to about what he loves.
But one subject in particular has gone wholly unrepresented.
“How come you've never painted a portrait of me?” Blaine asks.
"Hmm... what's that, love?" Kurt mutters, switching out brushes, then moving from a blob of Titanium White to a smear of Winsor Blue.
"How come you've never painted a portrait of me?" Blaine rises off his piano bench and relocates to the wooden folding chair behind Kurt's easel in the hopes of pulling his attention a bit. "You've been an artist for as long as I've known you, and I've known you your entire life. But not once have you ever painted a portrait of me."
“Why do I need to? I have you right here," Kurt says, pretending to bop the tip of Blaine's nose with his brush. "Besides, these aren’t personal." His gaze bounces between the three canvases set on easels in an arc in front of him. "They’re bought and paid for.”
"But what about your private stuff? You've shown me your sketchbooks and your digital art files. Unless you have some hidden folder marked 'secret boyfriend art' that I've yet to come across, there's not a single piece of me in any of your work."
Kurt doesn't steer his gaze away from the apple he's adding highlights to to acknowledge his pouty boyfriend, but the corner of his mouth hitches. "If you say so, dear."
"I know so," Blaine grumps, crossing his arms over his chest and dropping back in the chair so hard he nearly topples it over.
"That's your opinion."
"You're evading."
"Is it really so important to you?"
"Yes! It would be nice to be immortalized by my artist boyfriend!"
Kurt snickers. "Are you that much of a narcissist?"
"Your art is important to you! More than that - it's your life! You paint everything that you love! You've made dozens of paintings of Finn, your father, your mother, your Navigator... "
"My Navigator is my baby. It deserves love. I don't get to drive it much living in the city," Kurt defends. "Besides, those paintings I posted on Instagram landed me a huge contract with Lincoln, and that paid for our month-long tryst to Bali. You're welcome, by the way."
"I'm not saying I'm not grateful... " Blaine pauses, the smile on his face a souvenir from thirty straight days of overindulgence in sex and alcohol. "I think I more than proved that on that private beach? Under the moonlight?"
"Yeah, you did," Kurt growls, silently hoping that will be the end of this discussion.
"But... " Blaine picks up and Kurt's heart sinks.
No luck.
"... nowhere am I present in your work. Not that I've seen. Not even in the abstract. And that makes me think... "
"Think what?" Kurt mutters, his playful attitude fading the longer this conversation drags on.
Blaine sighs, realizing how much like a spoiled toddler he sounds. But he's in too deep to stop now. "That you don't expect me to be around long."
Kurt's snicker turns into a full-blown chortle. "We've been together forever! You staked a claim on me in kindergarten! Are you suddenly going somewhere?"
"Can't you take this seriously?"
"No."
"Why not?"
"Because it's ridiculous!"
Blaine huffs. "Great. So my feelings are ridiculous."
"No, Blaine, your feelings are valid. This argument is ridiculous. Believe it or don't, you don't know everything about me. Or my work. What does it matter what I put on a canvas? I told you that I love you! That I would always love you! I tell you over and over and over! Those are my words! My truth! Listen to my truth!"
"B-but what if you change your mind?" Blaine grimaces when that toddler inside him begins throwing an all-out tantrum.
"Then I change my mind!" Kurt groans, slamming his free hand down on an open tube of Dandelion Green, sending a thick ribbon of paint a good four feet. "I'm allowed to change my mind! And so are you! But I don't see that happening!"
"Then why won't you marry me?"
Kurt pulls a face, probably without thinking about it. "Because I'm not very fond of marriage."
"Why not? Your parents had a great marriage! And your father has a wonderful second marriage!"
"But your parents don't have a very good marriage, do they? Nor your older brother, who's been divorced twice already! " Kurt argues, frustration causing him to forget himself and clean his stained hand on the untucked hem of his shirt instead of a rag. That should be a huge red-flag for Blaine to back down, yet he doesn't. Common sense? Sorry, don't know her. "And the national average isn't that great, either. Doesn't it mean more that I choose to stay with you instead of feeling obligated to?"
Blaine doesn't have an answer for that, even though the answer is obviously yes. Of course, it does. And in high school, that would have been enough to shut Blaine up. But admitting to that feels too much like conceding, and this one time, this is an argument he wants to win. "Did you hear that song I've been working on?" Blaine asks, switching gears so quickly, it puts Kurt on edge.
"Yes," Kurt replies, his voice becoming tight quickly. "It's lovely."
"I wrote it for you."
"Thank you. It sounds wonderful. Another huge hit in the making."
"It's the 15th song I've written in your honor."
"Wow," Kurt says dryly, predicting the direction this is heading. "That many?"
"Yes."
"Well, that's an incredibly kind and loving gesture, one that I didn't know required reciprocation."
"It doesn't require reciprocation. But it would be nice."
Kurt rolls his eyes at Blaine's agenda. Tit for tat. Is that how this is supposed to work? "From what I remember, those songs made you a pretty penny."
"So?"
"So, it's not like you wrote them for me and kept them between us. Most of those songs are chart-toppers."
"But I didn't release them for the money! I wouldn't care if they didn't make me a dime! I put them on the albums because I'm not afraid to let the world know how I feel about you!"
Kurt's brow furrows as he fights through a blooming headache to decode that declaration. Once he gets it, he gasps. "I'm not hiding you away if that's what you're implying! You go with me EVERYWHERE! Every gallery opening, every art show! There have been articles written about our relationship! You're no dirty little secret!"
"I never said I was."
"No?" Kurt chuckles bitterly. "You're sure implying it a great deal!"
"That's not what this is about."
"You're right. It's not. Blaine!" Kurt tosses his brush into a mug of water and starts pacing the floor. "I am a gay artist walking a very fine line."
"I'm a gay artist, too!" Blaine says, offended.
"But you're a musician. And a songwriter. Musicians are supposed to use love as their muse. Writing about your relationship is expected... unless you're Taylor Swift, apparently."
"Yeah. What's up with that?"
Kurt shrugs. "I don't know. The point is that the second I make a piece of art about our relationship in any way, shape, or form, I'm afraid that's all it will be about, no matter what I intend."
"Isn't art supposed to be subject to interpretation?"
"That's just it! If I hint that my art has anything to do with you, that will become the only interpretation. Because too many straight people see the homosexual experience as solely about the right to fuck who we want to fuck and nothing else. I make a portrait about you or dedicated to you, and after that... " Kurt's eyes leave Blaine's face, scanning the room and his canvasses all around for help making his argument. He finds a painting of a forest they hiked through in Bali and stops there "... a tree that I paint will no longer be just a tree. It will become a symbol. In a forest of evergreens, if one needle is slightly browner than the rest because the paint oxidizes weirdly or whatever, then it'll be about you and me on the skids and nothing else. And I don't want that to happen."
Blaine turns in his chair to find the painting Kurt is staring at. On the surface, it's trees, dirt, and sky, but underneath, it's much more than that. That painting of their beloved paradise is perfection - so much so that he can feel the sun on his face, the breeze kissing his cheek, smell the sunscreen on his skin. "I understand what you're saying, but... "
"But?" Kurt grinds out between his teeth. This is the frustrating thing about arguing with Blaine. Even when he says he sees Kurt's point of view, he doesn't seem to really.
And when he's not winning, he gets dismissive.
"... I think you're overthinking things a little."
"And you're not?"
"Another evade," Blaine says, pointing at him in a way reminiscent of his brother's only acting technique.
Kurt grabs the hair at his temple and pulls to keep from flinging the palette in his hand like a frisbee at Blaine's head. "Isn't it more important that you know how I feel about you? You inspire me every day! Your love, your support, your music - they feed my soul! But do I have to plaster it on a wall to make it real?"
"That's kind of an empty question because you don't! There are no paintings of me! Not even in our apartment! And I'm sorry, but I think that's very telling!"
Kurt nods, his lips pulled taut. "You're right, Blaine. Not one. And it is very telling." He drops his palette on his work table and circles the room, grabbing finished canvases and carrying them over. He positions them purposefully, placing some under UV lights he has mounted to runners on the ceiling.
"What... what are you doing?" Blaine asks with worry, wondering if Kurt is about to do something hasty, something that will ruin his paintings, waste all those hours of work, jeopardize the money he has yet to collect for them.
Kurt doesn't answer.
He doesn't even look at him.
He works silently, his shoulders rigid, his footsteps heavy as he collects paintings Blaine forgot about, paintings that had made Blaine bristle because they were of places they had been to together, things they had made a point to see only with each other, but not a one included him. Those Kurt flips upside down.
He swipes a squeeze bottle of clear liquid from his army of supplies. It could be water. It could be paint thinner. Blaine doesn't know, but he's not certain he wants to find out. He's about to leap off his seat to stop him, but Kurt switches off the overhead lights, turns on the UVs, and Blaine stops. He watches in horror as Kurt douses the flipped canvases in fluid, but the paint doesn't run. Whatever is in that bottle, it sticks, but only in certain areas, and before it dries completely, Kurt dusts the paintings with a fine powder, one that brings hidden images to life beneath the lights.
“Oh my God,” Blaine mutters, stepping back to get a better look.
Every painting, in one way or another, is of him. Of them. And not just recently. There are images of them from college, high school... middle school. There are profiles of Blaine in the negative space between flowers of one painting, and in the clouds of another. A fluorescent image of teenaged him playing guitar to a silhouette of Kurt sitting beside him. There are shadows of them dancing, singing, even a daring one of them making love up against a wall.
And the flipped landscapes? Their vacation pictures, as it were? The glowing dust reveals portraits hiding in plain sight, painted upside down and invisible to the naked eye. All of these images, Kurt painted in ways where no one would detect them if they weren't looking for them. If they didn't know they were there.
And they are in every. single. one.
Now that he's seen this, it's safe to assume all of Kurt's works carry similar Easter eggs, even paintings long gone.
"Why... why didn't you tell me about this?" Blaine asks, too stuck on stupid to move, walk from painting to painting and examine them properly.
"Why did I need to? I love you. I've told you. What else did I need to prove?"
Blaine shakes his head slowly, ashamed of himself. What an imbecile he is! Kurt is absolutely right. He loves him! He didn't need to prove it! The hurt Blaine felt - that was on him. It wasn't Kurt's responsibility to fix it. There isn't a day that goes by where Kurt doesn't show his love to Blaine in one way or another. Blaine didn't need this. He really didn't.
And right now, he doesn't feel he deserves it.
On a side note, how wrapped up in his own crap has he been that here, in this space that they share, where proximity has forced Kurt to memorize every song Blaine has been writing for his latest album while he paints, that he never realized just how frickin' talented his boyfriend is!?
"Kurt... " Blaine finally finds the strength to take a step forward, drawn to that ghostly image of them making love. It's a simple shadow of the moment, but it evokes a powerful memory "... these are incredible. How did you... ?" Blaine expects an answer before he can finish. Kurt is rarely shy about discussing his work.
Though Blaine should use this opening to his advantage - apologize since those should have been the first words out of his mouth.
But he gets nothing.
"Kurt?" Blaine looks over his shoulder in search of his boyfriend, ready to make amends.
But Kurt is gone.

[ axel auriant, cis man, twenty-two ] Let’s give a warm welcome to one of Sparkwood’s finest, WYLAN VAN ECK !! Before coming here, she once lived on the pages of SIX OF CROWS. Though now they currently spend most of their time as a HEIR / STUDENT. If you ask the townsfolk about what they are like, you will hear that they are COMPASSIONATE but also INNOCENT. If they had a theme song it would be FEVER DREAM - MXMTOON.
you can find the rest of my muses here !
TRIGGER WARNINGS: albeism, verbal abuse, force institutionalization, and attempted murder.
wylan was born to an extremely wealthy family originally from denmark, but he was born and raised in washington d.c. where his father worked as a diplomat. the early years of wylan’s youth were quite possibly the only happy years of his life. he spent his days as a child playing with his older sister and discovering his passion for art. he picked up painting and playing several instruments such as piano, violin, flute, and clarinet from just the age of six. but while wylan was being home-schooled by his parents, it was discovered that the boy had a severe learning disability (dyslexia) that made it rather difficult to grasp reading and writing. while his mother was rather patient and understanding while she tutored him, his father scoffed and proceeded to mock his son’s disability. he viewed the fact that wylan learned at a slower pace as a disappointment and felt some sort of shame that his son wasn’t ‘gifted’ in the ways he wanted him to be — no matter how talented wylan was in other areas.
wylan was temporarily sent away for the summer with his sister lyla in tow, the two returning home only for their father to announce that their mother had passed away. wylan was utterly heartbroken, not only was he not given an explanation but he had been extremely close with his mother. the worst part of it all? neither of the children were allowed to attend their mother’s funeral. little did they know, their father had merely had their mother institutionalized somewhere against her will just so he could get rid of her. not long after their mother’s “funeral”, their father met a new woman named alys and eventually she became pregnant. viewing his children from his past marriage as a mistake, he decided to have them sent away just as he had done with his wife.
he lied and told the children they were merely being sent off to boarding school, hiring someone to murder his children along the trip. but the two were able to discover that something was amiss and they narrowly escaped. they ended up essentially vanishing and settling down in the town of sparkwood where they began a new life together. wylan was able to receive a scholarship to the institute where he focused primarily on his music. after graduating from high school, he was able to receive another scholarship to study music at the local university. while he has suffered through a lot of trauma in his twenty-two years, he feels as if things are slowly beginning to turn around for him.
HEADCANONS.
wylan identifies as homosexual and came out around the age of seventeen to his sister.
he still has a lot of self doubts about himself due to the constant verbal abuse that he suffered from on behalf of his father.
he is somewhat paranoid that his father will find him and try and hurt him, he has night terrors about lyla or himself getting taken away from the other and being harmed.
even though he still struggles with his dyslexia, he has worked hard to navigate the world with his disability and is extremely proud of himself for never giving up.
not only does he play several instruments, but he loves to compose his own music.
he is a bit of a pyromaniac, he loves to play with fire and pyrotechnics.
he sleeps with a star shaped night light in his room.
a total soft boy,,, please be nice to him. <3

[ axel auriant, cisgender male, twenty-two ] Let’s give a warm welcome to one of Sparkwood’s finest, WYLAN VAN ECK !! Let’s see how their story unravels this time.
you can find the rest of my muses here !

A NEW ERA OF EVANESCENCE
Evanescence unknowingly takes the stage for the last time before the music industry reels from widespread changes due to the COVID-19 pandemic in March, 2020. With new challenges on the immediate horizon, they had to make a decision and figure out a way to navigate the new industry, one without live music. Their new album, The Bitter Truth, out now, cascades around the band’s last ten years since they released original music and brings about a new, revitalized energy to the world.
“It's an evolution of Evanescence in a very modern but also old school way,” shares guitarist Jen Majura. “It’s the perfect merge of modern 21st century sounds and that old school; the roots, guitar rock sound. Every band member in Evanescence has their own musical taste. When those five characters come together for writing and creating, everybody has this ‘you're the oregano, you're the thyme and rosemary and you put all these flavors together and that's what the album sounds [like].”
When Evanescence burst onto the scene in 2003, no one could have imagined the immense impact they were going to make, now spanning almost 20 years later, but it didn’t all start there. Conceived in 1995 in Little Rock, Arkansas by vocalist Amy Lee and former guitarist Ben Moody, the rock staples worked their asses off for 10 years, recording independent albums, before releasing their exceptional, debut album “Fallen.” It was an instant success and an album for the ages, paving the way for their future in the scene. No one could have foreseen the complete 180 the world would take in 2020, but working on the first original material from the group in a decade kept them in high spirits.
“It was healing for me; I don’t know what I would've done. I would've gone insane last year if we didn't have this album to make,” admits Lee. “I’ve learned again and again a life lesson, that it's not what happens to you, it's what you do with it. It’s how you take what you've been given and what you turn it into and I'm not always waking up motivated and ready to take on the world, but when you can overcome whatever it is and take the experience that has happened to you and turn it into something that could actually potentially feel good to someone else, there's life in that. There's healing in that.”
The writing process for “The Bitter Truth” started in early 2020 with familiar producer Nick Raskulinecz, who helped put together their third self-titled album in 2011. The group met up in Nashville and pumped out four songs before taking a month off to unwind. Unfortunately, the pandemic hit and everything changed. Majura, who lives in Germany, was stuck due to quarantine and isolation restrictions, which threw a wrench into the album plans, even though she was halfway around the world, things came together and Majura handled it with ease
“The overall message of this album is it's very energizing, empowering and inspiring because there is so much going on in the world these days,” says Majura. “You have to process a lot and it's just not only politics but also climate change and movements and there's so much going on on this planet Earth; I feel, we as humans, we need to heal our planet Earth and I believe this album might contribute to that a little bit because it's telling people in so many different, beautiful, and emotional ways to stand up for what's right and make this place a better place.”
The last year has turned everything upside down but luckily, we can all count on music and art to bring us together and hopefully keep out the hate. To be at peace for thirty minutes to an hour, is a severely undervalued opportunity. Fans around the world can feel a little bit better now that Evanescence is back and edgier than ever, but no one is as happy as Evanescence. 2021 is looking up and all we can do is keep smiling and fight back, with music leading the way.
“It really is this big piece of my life,” explains Lee. “Just a big piece of the band and who we are; where we've been in particular and where we are now. Having to think creatively about ways to continue and ways to connect with people despite the obstacles has been inspiring in itself; it's going to make me happy to see them [the fans] happy.”
“Music has this incredible talent; music is art,” shares Majura. “When you, as a musician, create something and your listener is listening to what you do and your music creates emotions or pictures or puts yourself in another place in your mind, this is what music is about. It shall not be out there for making money; you do music for the passion of music, for the love of music and when your music touches the souls of your audience that’s the utmost beautiful thing that can happen.”

Embodying Black Joy
Before Black History Month 2021 comes to an end, I want to take this moment to reflect on how significant this time truly is. Although my belief is that Black History and culture should be celebrated throughout all months of the year;  for now, I do believe it is important that we continue to utilize this time to acknowledge the historical feat against monumental odds that Black people have been able to achieve. It is the responsibility of the current and future generations to take what we have learned and keep the momentum going. It is also necessary for us to utilize our talents and gifts to uplift those around us.
As a natural caregiver, I  nourish the people around me by creating and sustaining a community of care, joy & connection. Carnival Spice has allowed me to complete much of this work and I am truly grateful for that. Typically in February months I see an increase in Carnival Spice bookings due to Black History Month. Our most popular offering during this time is our family-friendly cultural presentations that highlight Black culture using dance, fitness and story telling in such a unique way.
I feel so full-filled when leading these presentations - especially when it is for our school-aged groups. Seeing kids of all ages so excited to learn and embrace the richness of Afro-Caribbean culture really motivates me to keep going. I particularly appreciate how engaged they are in the experience and the high vibrations they exude. Though all of our presentations were virtual this year, you could still feel their energy and joy through the screen.
"The most radical and revolutionary thing we can do for ourselves is to connect to joy and to allow ourselves to feel. That is how show up positively in the world and complete dissolve ancestral trauma."  -- Devi Brown
Joy, that deep-rooted inner feeling that inspires that outward expression of happiness... But Black joy goes far beyond that. Black people have contributed so much to this world yet sadly the way we as a people have been treated does not reflect that. Racism, social injustice, and trauma runs rampant plus there isn't enough spaces that allow for healing. Thankfully, joy is a form of healing; and while society often condemns Black people for being "too loud", "too angry" or "too much", revelling in joy is an act of resistance too.
Engaging in Black joy sends a message to your mind and spirit that you are worthy, you are important, and you are loved. We should make a habit of taking inspired action to bring joy into our lives. I put together a few light-hearted lists for you that may help you engage in Black joy daily:
The Beauty of Affirmations
I believe the universe has the power to align us with people, things and experiences that match our vibrations. It is important for us to keep our vibrations high to increase the opportunity of positive attraction. Practicing the act of repeating and affirmations (positive statements) is a powerful way to strengthen our mindset by helping us believe in the potential of an action we desire to manifest.
I encourage you to write out an affirmation related to joy and set it as a as a daily alarm on your phone. When the alarm goes off repeat the statement out loud and be present in the moment and positive energy.
Listen To Music
Music is a powerful tool that unlocks joy. From the beat, to the lyrics, to the melody certain parts of songs just know how to hit our soul. I created a playlist with a mix of feel good songs from different eras and genres - take what you'd like:
Can’t Take My Joy by Terri Lyons
My Dream by Nesbeth
Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See by Busta Rhymes
The Anthem by  Todd Dehaney
Blessed by Wizkid and Damien Marley
Beat of Life by Sarz ft. Wizkid
Jerusalema by Master KG ft. Burna Boy
Skip To My Lou by Ding Dong, Serani & Biggy
Just Dance - Wacky Dip by Ding Dong feat. Voicemail
Go Crazy by Chris Brown
High Life by Machel Montano
Full of Vibes by Voice &  Marge Blackman
Lose Control by Missy Elliot - ft. Fat Man Scoop
Happy by Pharell Williams
Dance Heals
Dance truly does heals and it is such a positive way to embody Black joy. Here are some of my favourite dance moves from the African Caribbean Diaspora - taken from popular genres such as afrobeat, soca, dancehall and hip - hop.
Shaku Shaku (Nigeria)
"Although the dance is credited to Olamide, the truth is that he is not the inventor of the dance. But he played the major role in the crossing over of the dance to the mainstream media. The dance originated in the streets. According to DJ Real, Shaku Shaku name is for street guys, and the dance was named after their particular style of dances when they are hanging out" - Source. The move involves crossing one arm over the other and bringing that same arm toward the ear as if you are making a phone call.
Palance (Trinidad)
In 2010, the world was introduced to the song and dance that is palance. The song by JW and Blaze ’s popularity was established when it took the "Road March" title at Trinidad’s Carnival that year where it was played along the parade’s judging route 417 times. The move involves jumping side to side on one foot at a time while waving yuh flaggg. Back then, soca song's weren't known for having dances - so palance truly broke the mold. We have even seen Beyonce and Justin Trudeau do it.
Krazy Hype (Jamaica)
This mid school dancehall move will always be one of my favourites. It was created in 2003 by choreographer Crazy Hype from the The MOB Dance Group to Elephant Man hit song of the same name. The move involves hopping from side to side but landing on your heels.
Harlem Shake (Us)
The dance was created by Harlem resident Al. B. in 1981. However, in 2001 the dance resurfaced and was renamed when it featured heavily in G.Dep’s music video for the song "Let's Get It". When you hear this song one can't help but get to shakin'.
Enjoy A Movie
Get your laugh on or enjoy a flick that makes your heart smile. While your at it, support a Black art! I have helped you out by compiling a list movies that exude Black Joy.
Soul (2020)
Critics Consensus: A film as beautiful to contemplate as it is to behold, Soul proves Pixar's power to deliver outstanding all-ages entertainment remains undimmed.
Synopsis: A music teacher who dreams of performing jazz live finally gets his chance, only he travels to another realm to help someone find their passion, he soon discovers what it means to have soul.
Soul Food (1997)
Critics Consensus: Much like the titular cuisine, Soul Food blends a series of savoury ingredients to offer warm, generous helpings of nourishment and comfort.
Synopsis: This hit domestic comedy-drama concerned the fortunes of an extended African-American family recalled through the eyes of young narrator Ahmad Hammond.
Love and Basketball (2000)
Critics Consensus: Confident directing and acting deliver an insightful look at young athletes.
Synopsis: A young African-American couple navigates the tricky paths of romance and athletics in this drama. Over the years, the two lead characters begin to fall for each other, but their separate paths to basketball stardom threaten to pull them apart.
Sister Act 2: Back In The Habit (1993)
Critics Consensus: Sister Act is off-key in this reprise, fatally shifting the spotlight from Whoopi Goldberg to a less compelling ensemble of pupils and trading its predecessor's sharp comedy for unconvincing sentiment.
Synopsis: In the sequel to the hit comedy Sister Act, Whoopie Goldberg reprises her role of Deloris Van Cartier, a Las Performer. It appears Deloris is needed in her nun guise as Sister Mary Clarence to help teach music to teens at a troubled school in hopes of keeping the facility from closing at the hands of Mr. Crisp (James Coburn), a callous administrator.

Navigating a normal life within regular social norms was already hard enough. Trying to figure out if your behavior was acceptable, how others perceived you, as well as where you stood with someone was trying. Add wealth, power, and greed to this, and you had the complicated web of relationships that Kyungsoo had been trying to navigate ever since birth. Kyungsoo came from a well-off family. His great grandfather had built a business that skyrocketed in success about fifty years ago. Though his family didn't have the type of power to run the country, as some would hear of others, they were still quite renowned.
This, of course, meant that Kyungsoo grew up differently than other kids. He had his life mapped out for him before he was even born. He was sent to the most prestigious institutions for his education so that he could take over his portion of the business when the time was right. Every day was packed with additional coursework outside of schoolwork, the family priming him to be a well-rounded individual. Sometimes, he would get to play with his friends, but that wasn't often. And honestly, he could never tell if his friends were really his friends or just people that wanted to befriend him because of his family. Though as complicated as this all was. There was one thing that Kyungsoo was sure of.
He loved you.
Kyungsoo had loved you for a long time, likely before he even knew the meaning of the word. Many things in Kyungsoo's life were already etched in stone, and one of them, in particular, was his engagement with you. Your family was also rather wealthy, and it was projected to be a union that would help both families. But as children, neither of you understood this. You just enjoyed your time playing together, running through the large homes and gardens, playing hide and seek. You didn't have a care in the world back then.
But as you grew older, the two of you started to understand. You understood your roles in your families, as well as your future roles towards each other. Strangely, it didn't bother either of you. By that point, you were already close. You spent a lot of time with each other every day, so it was natural for you to depend on the other. And whether you knew it or not, that might have been when those first seeds of love were planted in your hearts.
Still, even if everything was planned, growing up was hard, mainly through the teen years. Although Kyungsoo expertly navigating these new social circles, like many of his peers,  he noticed that you were having a much harder time. You were naturally rather shy, to begin with, and everything that was changing probably didn't help. Whereas girls your age were developing into beautiful swans, using makeup to enhance their maturing features, Kyungsoo noticed you shrinking away. You wore more clothes to hide, grew quieter, and this was what got the school talking.
Kids were cruel, and you were subjected to a handful of baseless rumors. Kyungsoo shot every one of them down, but that didn't stop people from talking. Amongst the sea of wealthy children who spent their family's money to get into all sorts of trouble, the only person you had left was Kyungsoo. But honestly, he was all you needed. All of the drama in high school pulled the two of you closer. Your bond grew stronger.
Kyungsoo didn't leave you for his new group of friends. Instead, he found himself spending more time with you. You would always do your coursework together. You would still eat together. And most importantly, you spent your free time together. While you pursued your passion for painting, Kyungsoo would be nearby, face buried in a book. Those small seeds of love were blossoming into beautiful flowers that thrived on your support for each other.
Age eventually led Kyungsoo to start working for his family's business. This was expected, but it did mean that the two of you spent less time together. Your engagement was kept quiet for the time being, allowing you both to focus on your new jobs. You also worked at your parents' company, though a lot of the work you did was behind the scenes. You never really got over your shyness, and you preferred to handle business that didn't require you to be in the spotlight, and your parents respected that. It did make things a bit harder in some respects, but you all worked through it the best that you could.
Though you were both busy, Kyungsoo had worked hard to maintain that connection the two of you had over the years. Because as much as he wanted to be there for you, he appreciated you being there for him too. He wasn't going to let the stress of his family's work get in the way of your relationship.
Naturally, after the two of you grew comfortable with your roles, your families were back to talking about your marriage. For something that had been agreed upon so long ago, there wasn't much arranged for it.  So all of the wedding planning had to be completed within a few hectic months. This did make some things difficult, of course. While you were trying to plan the wedding, old friends and the general public felt the need to comment on the arrangement. They posited that someone as successful as Kyungsoo could have found someone better, someone more fitting for the limelight. These comments were hard to see, even hear, but Kyungsoo stayed close. He knew what you needed, and not once, over all of these years together, had that changed. And eventually, the chatter from your social circles died down.
That night, Kyungsoo arrived home a bit later than usual from his business meeting. He had some people coming from overseas, and due to some flight delays and overall time differences, the meeting ran for longer than expected. He was exhausted now, and he figured that you probably would have been asleep yourself. From what he had gathered from your messages throughout the day, work had been hectic for you as well. Yet, much to his surprise,  you weren't. The moment he walked through the front door, he saw the light of your studio, the yellow hue dancing across the floorboards of your hallway. With a faint smile, he dropped off his jacket and bag by the door before he made his way over, eyes peering into the gently lit space to see what you were up to.
One of the first things that the two of you did when you moved in together was to set up this little art studio for you. Something that hadn't changed since you were children was your love for painting. Even now, your brush effortlessly danced across the canvas as you laid down the first layers to your next masterpiece. Though art was always a hobby, you had sold a handful of pieces under a pseudonym. And though it made Kyungsoo happy to see others appreciating your work, part of his did wish that you would make yourself known… instead of hiding behind a façade.
"Looking lovely as always," he stated, his low voice cutting through the calming music that you had playing in the background.
Though you were startled, you had learned not to jump. One, for the sake of your painting, and two, because this was pretty typical of your husband. Kyungsoo was always rather good at sneaking up behind you when you least expected it. As much as that bothered you sometimes, you were glad when he was around.
"Are you talking about me or the painting that I'm working on?" you inquired, turning around a bit in your stool so that you could get a good look at him. He smiled when your eyes met, and you received a chuckle in response.
"Both. Though, I think that your painting may outshine you this time," he teased, watching as your eyes narrowed slightly, a scoff leaving your lips in return. Kyungsoo's smile spread as he made his way across the studio, the space much more natural to traverse now that the two of you found some proper shelving for your supplies. He gave you a gentle kiss on the cheek, and the moment that he felt your lips pulling into a smile, he knew that you weren't upset. His hands found their way to your shoulders, and his eyes gazed at the piece of art before him.
"The colors are really nice for this piece. You went for warmer colors than you usually work with. I think it's stunning," Kyungsoo complimented.
You gave a small nod before resting your head against his arm. "I wanted to try something a bit different this time," you explained. "Since I'm usually partial to cooler colors, I wanted to step outside of my comfort zone, work on something that can bring warmth to a room."
"Will we be hanging this one up, or will you be looking for a buyer for it?"
You hummed softly, your mind trying to come up with the right decision. "I think I'd like to keep it. I think it could look really nice in our living room, in that one empty space along the back wall. I always thought it felt a bit cold, so this could help?"
Kyungsoo nodded. "I think it would look really nice there," he agreed. "Maybe someday, we could actually tell our friends that the artist they are so in love with is you…"
You let out a quiet sigh, knowing what Kyungsoo meant. He always wanted you to be more confident in yourself, to share your passion with others. Though you had become more comfortable in your own skin, it was still hard for you to in a room with too many people. He wanted to be able to bring you to events, but extravagant events were always too much for you. Small ones were fine, but when they reached a certain level, it was hard. "You know that isn't like me…"
"I know," he said softly. "Part of me wants to show you off to the world, to show off your talent to others. I think people feel like I purposefully keep you hidden away. I... I just want others to appreciate you the way that I do…"
"You didn't have to marry me, you know," you reminded him. "You could have chosen someone that liked the spotlight more than I did. They would love to go to those big and fancy events and have people ogle them…"
Kyungsoo nodded, his hands gently sliding down your arms as they reached for your hands, helping you up on your feet so that he could slip his arms around you, holding you in his embrace. "I could have. My parents told me that there were a lot of other families that were interested in an arranged marriage," he told you truthfully. "But, I know that I could never have the same connection with any of them that I have with you. We grew up together. We were there for each other, and you managed to take over every inch of my heart, little by little. You didn't do anything big, but each of your little gestures showed me how much you cared. I couldn't find that anywhere else…"
You couldn't help but the smile that crept onto your features, the way that the heat rose to your cheese. "You, Do Kyungsoo, have become very cheesy since we were kids," you stated, your own hands finding their way around his neck.
"Only because I love you so much," he reaffirmed. "Our parents may have arranged this marriage, but what I feel for you isn't fake. If I had to marry anyone else, I wouldn't feel the same. I don't want you to ever forget that."
"I won't," you told him earnestly, as he leaned down to seal your lips with a kiss. Though your lives were anything from average, Kyungsoo wouldn't have changed this quieter and more private love for anything in the world…

Far from her parents, a tragic turn of events leaves an infant orphaned. Alone in the world, that child will be raised in the most humble circumstances by a modest stable manager and his wife. No one, not even she, knows of her lineage. But when a stack of hidden letters comes to light, a secret kept for nearly two decades finally surfaces, and a long lost princess emerges.
The Joyce Girl by Annabel Abbs
The review in the Paris Times in November 1928 is rapturous in its praise of Lucia Joyce’s skill and artistry as a dancer. The family has made their home in Paris—where the latest ideas in art, music, and literature converge. Acolytes regularly visit the Joyce apartment to pay homage to Ireland’s exiled literary genius. Among them is a tall, thin young man named Samuel Beckett—a fellow Irish expat who idolizes Joyce and with whom Lucia becomes romantically involved. Lucia is both gifted and motivated, training tirelessly with some of the finest teachers in the world. Though her father delights in his daughter’s talent, she clashes with her mother, Nora. And as her relationship with Beckett sours, Lucia’s dreams unravel, as does her hope of a life beyond her father’s shadow. With Lucia’s behavior growing increasingly erratic, James Joyce sends her to pioneering psychoanalyst Carl Jung. Here, at last, she will tell her own story—a fascinating, heartbreaking account of thwarted ambition, passionate creativity, and the power of love to both inspire and destroy.
The Black Swan of Paris by Karen Robards
A world at war. A beautiful young star. A mission no one expected.
Paris, 1944
Celebrated singer Genevieve Dumont is both a star and a smokescreen. An unwilling darling of the Nazis, the chanteuse’s position of privilege allows her to go undetected as an ally to the resistance.
When her estranged mother, Lillian de Rocheford, is captured by Nazis, Genevieve knows it won’t be long before the Gestapo succeeds in torturing information out of Lillian that will derail the upcoming allied invasion. The resistance movement is tasked with silencing her by any means necessary—including assassination. But Genevieve refuses to let her mother become yet one more victim of the war. Reuniting with her long-lost sister, she must find a way to navigate the perilous cross-currents of Occupied France undetected—and in time to save Lillian’s life.
Mrs. Lincoln's Sisters by Jennifer Chiaverini
In May 1875, Elizabeth Todd Edwards reels from news that her younger sister Mary, former First Lady and widow of President Abraham Lincoln, has attempted suicide.
Mary’s shocking act followed legal proceedings arranged by her eldest and only surviving son that declared her legally insane. Although they have long been estranged, Elizabeth knows Mary’s tenuous mental health has deteriorated through decades of trauma and loss. Yet is her suicide attempt truly the impulse of a deranged mind, or the desperate act of a sane woman terrified to be committed to an asylum? And—if her sisters can put past grievances aside—is their love powerful enough to save her?
Maternal Elizabeth, peacemaker Frances, envious Ann, and much adored Emilie had always turned to one another in times of joy and heartache, first as children, and later as young wives and mothers. But when Civil War erupted, the conflict that divided a nation shattered their family. The Todd sisters’s fates were bound to their husbands’ choices as some joined the Lincoln administration, others the Confederate Army.
Now, though discord and tragedy have strained their bonds, Elizabeth knows they must come together as sisters to help Mary in her most desperate hour.
The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett
The Vignes twin sisters will always be identical. But after growing up together in a small, southern black community and running away at age sixteen, it's not just the shape of their daily lives that is different as adults, it's everything: their families, their communities, their racial identities. Many years later, one sister lives with her black daughter in the same southern town she once tried to escape. The other secretly passes for white, and her white husband knows nothing of her past. Still, even separated by so many miles and just as many lies, the fates of the twins remain intertwined. What will happen to the next generation, when their own daughters' storylines intersect?
Weaving together multiple strands and generations of this family, from the Deep South to California, from the 1950s to the 1990s, Brit Bennett produces a story that is at once a riveting, emotional family story and a brilliant exploration of the American history of passing. Looking well beyond issues of race, The Vanishing Half considers the lasting influence of the past as it shapes a person's decisions, desires, and expectations, and explores some of the multiple reasons and realms in which people sometimes feel pulled to live as something other than their origins.
The Book of Lost Friends by Lisa Wingate
Louisiana, 1875 In the tumultuous aftermath of Reconstruction, three young women set off as unwilling companions on a perilous quest: Lavinia, the pampered heir to a now-destitute plantation; Juneau Jane, her illegitimate free-born Creole half-sister; and Hannie, Lavinia's former slave. Each carries private wounds and powerful secrets as they head for Texas, following dangerous roads rife with ruthless vigilantes and soldiers still fighting a war lost a decade before. For Lavinia and Juneau Jane, the journey is one of inheritance and financial desperation, but for Hannie, torn from her mother and eight siblings before slavery's end, the pilgrimage westward reignites an agonizing question: Could her long-lost family still be out there? Beyond the swamps lie the seemingly limitless frontiers of Texas and, improbably, hope. Louisiana, 1987 For first-year teacher Benedetta Silva, a subsidized job at a poor rural school seems like the ticket to canceling her hefty student debt--until she lands in a tiny, out-of-step Mississippi River town. Augustine, Louisiana, seems suspicious of new ideas and new people, and Benny can scarcely comprehend the lives of her poverty-stricken students. But amid the gnarled oaks and run-down plantation homes lies the century-old history of three young women, a long-ago journey, and a hidden book that could change everything.

April 8th: Talk about friendship. How important are friends to you? Do you find it hard to make and maintain friendships? Are your friends generally supportive? Is there anything about having friends that confuses you?
Making friends is incredibly difficult for me. At this point in my life, I’ve already been beaten down into becoming a loner. I’m always afraid of being “too much” or “too weird” or inappropriate, so I never start conversations myself. I never know what’s “appropriate” to talk about and I have a tendency to overshare and make people uncomfortable, so I always wait for them to take the lead and then I pick and choose from my scripts for small talk I keep in my head. But of course that means any social interaction I have is generally super shallow.
But I should mention that even though I’m a loner, friendships that actually work out and people who stick around despite me are extremely important to me and I become incredibly loyal to them once they’ve shown me that they’re willing to deal with me.
Amy I met in undergrad when I needed someone to hold onto my emergency panic attack meds during a choir retreat. To this day I’m surprised I even did that because that’s an incredibly vulnerable thing for me to do. I don’t like telling people that I’m on medication for anxiety. (I grew up during a time when mental health was pretty much a joke and being on meds meant you were weak.) She and I roomed together for a few years until she graduated before me. She’s been super supportive and understanding. And she’s always willing to learn, which I appreciate a ton.
Alice is another amazing friend who I met during high school through tumblr, I think. She reached out to me to help with a project of hers since I was doing HetaOni music and she enjoyed my work. She’s my art inspiration and I love her. She’s also super supportive and understanding.
My platonic soulmate, Kep, just kinda invited herself into my life and I adore her. She’s incredibly supportive and lets me infodump about shit that she doesn’t care that much about just because I’m passionate about it. Even back in high school when I met her, she helped me navigate situations where she knew that my anxiety would skyrocket in. We didn’t know I was autistic back then, but she would go out of her way to make sure I had space in crowded situations and that I was included in conversations. She encouraged me a lot and I can’t thank her enough for everything she’s done for me. She’s my partner in crime and I adore her so much.
