my cringefail autistic babygirls nine and ten in the style of "doodles i'd do during class back when they passed out actual physical worksheets"
turns out if you set your procreate pencil to 60% opacity on accident, the graphite effect becomes a lot more believable. who knew!
[Image ID: A digital drawing of the busts of the Christopher Eccleston Doctor and the first David Tennant Doctor in profile, facing right and left respectfully. they are offset vertically, and the style mimics that of a traditional graphite pencil on computer paper; the background sports slight texturing to reinforce this. both doctors are wearing their traditional outfits. each has text written next to them, saying 'nine, last of the Time Lords, the one who loved' and 'the one love bore, Time Lord victorious, ten' respectively. / .End ID]

Okay I've thought about this as long as I can stand and--am I the only person who thought this was *awkward*?
I've been chewing on it, reading about other people's reactions, studying frame by frame the movements of Aziraphale's hands and like. I *see* it, I see how y'all get to the "brief moment of reciprocation" conclusion, but.
It is AWKWARD. It is one of the most awkward onscreen kisses I have ever seen.
Why is that??
The characters have chemistry. The narrative has established their relationship. The actors have chemistry; each of them has a proven track record of standout performances. And it's not as though either of them is new at this. So why, with all that on the table, does this look like amateur hour?
I got curious about it, and my hypothesis is this: they're reading from different playbooks.
"Saw it in a Richard Curtis film".
It feels like a throwaway line, something to wink-nudge a laugh out of the audience. There's a bit of confusion immediately afterwards regarding Jane Austen, Prolific Novelist and Jane Austen, Jewel Thief and Crime Lord, and isn't that funny haha look at the clueless celestial beings but almost NOTHING in this show has been just filler, or meaningless.
So who was Richard Curtis and why is he the model for Crowley's attempts at matchmaking? Turns out Richard Curtis directed some of the more iconic romcoms of the 90s and 2000s. I'm talking Notting Hill ("I'm just a girl, standing in front of a boy, asking him to love her", remember that one?); I'm talking Love Actually; I'm talking Bridget Jones Diary--which, funnily enough, is at the very least inspired by Pride & Prejudice. Sappy monologues and kissing in the rain is this guy's bread & butter.
Aziraphale, on the other hand, wants to try the Austen-esque approach of having balls. There were fairly rigid rules to courtship back in Austen's day. Rules that HAD to be followed, in the right order, or else face social ruin. Austen made her career out of poking fun at those even as her characters worked within them. Point is, you only get to kiss at the end, and one of you better be wearing a wedding dress.
I may be stating the obvious but I haven't seen anyone else talking about it so: one layer to Crowley's and Aziraphale's brainstorming session on how to get Nina and Maggie together is also their way of subtly indicating what they themselves find romantic, and would want someone else to do for them to demonstrate their interest. For Aziraphale it's dancing and atmospheric lighting and having everything just so and *conversations that clear up everything*. For Crowley it's tearful speeches and getting the chance to tell the truth while streetlights glitter through pouring rain, where the protagonists seem to be pulled into a showstopping kiss almost as of by magnetism alone. There's a formula to each of the kinds of romantic storytelling that inspires their different matchmaking styles.
For Aziraphale, The Kiss (because you know this bitch(affectionate) would use the Capital Letters for Emphasis And/Or Significance) skips several steps in the courtship dance he thinks they've been doing. From Crowley's Perspective, Aziraphale is three acts, two scenes behind from where *he* thinks they are. Their kiss looks awkward because they are desynchronized, out of step with each other.
In other words, and in many more ways than just the one, they are not on the same page.
But you know who these two numpties have in common?
William Fucking Shakespeare. My outlandishly speculative prediction for season 3 is their reconciliation will have something to do with Shakespeare's comedic works. The perfect turnabout would be modeling it on Much Ado, with Nina and Maggie playing the bits of Hero and Claudio in fabricating evidence to get them back together: Crowley and Aziraphale messed about with their lives, it's only fair they should get to dish it out.

Thinking about the commonalities in Dracula between cutting-edge (for the period) innovations and traditions from past centuries that have passed out of common knowledge. (I do want to mention that according to the text these traditions clearly haven’t passed out of common Transylvanian knowledge, but since Stoker treats traveling eastward as functionally equivalent to traveling into the past, for our Western-European protagonists it comes to more or less the same thing.) Under the cut for length.
The protagonists have been using both modern innovation and forgotten tradition to try and thwart Drac - Jonathan’s use of shorthand and even his journey by train to Budapest are both modern, but the crucifix the innkeeper gave him is more traditional; Lucy is kept alive via modern blood transfusions and traditional garlic flowers (which themselves are only available out of season from a modern greenhouse); Van Helsing has to return to Amsterdam to get his books, which presumably cover folkloric traditions such as the garlic, but he’s only able to go back and forth so quickly because of modern transportation.
I know quite a few people in the tag have already brought up this mingling of old and new, but what’s really striking to me is how much Drac operates in the lacuna between these two sources of knowledge. I remember someone mentioning that Mrs. Westenra was probably brought up believing in miasma theory, which would explain why she thought the garlic smell would be bad for Lucy’s health - but she was not brought up on the superstitions/folkloric traditions that would have warned her Lucy’s illness was not mundane, and that the garlic’s presence was protective. The Transylvanian peasants’ traditions obviously didn’t prevent Drac from terrorizing them, but they did help - if they hadn’t, he would presumably not be bothering to move to England. (I also think the relative infrequency of Drac’s and his roommates’ feedings while Jonathan was in the castle might be due to those traditional protections making vulnerable prey scarce.)
One thing that’s really interesting to me about this dynamic is that it positions the Enlightenment as - not necessarily a bad but a dangerous thing. By pivoting to a new worldview, a new philosophy of knowledge, Western Europe has discarded old beliefs that did genuinely hold great value - and even as technology improves, gaps are left where old knowledge would have served but new knowledge has not yet advanced enough to fill. The suggestion seems to be that an inaccurate scientifically-based worldview is more dangerous than a folklorically-based one - see Mrs. Westenra and miasma theory. Neither is the folklorically-based worldview devoid of truth or merit. I do think the text suggests that the scientific worldview is superior - look at the Transylvanian peasants’ cowed terror and their purely defensive anti-Dracula measures, vs. Van Helsing’s proactive blood transfusions saving someone who’s actually been bitten already - but it isn’t presented as infallibly accurate, and without a supplemental reliance on tradition it leaves dangerous gaps in the characters’ understanding. (Such as Seward’s complete misunderstanding of the reasons behind Renfield’s actions.)
Ultimately, the most important thing is knowledge, whether that knowledge is old or new - and the protagonists are best able to combat Dracula’s efforts when they combine those sources, patching holes in the one with information from the other. Conversely, Drac relies on others’ ignorance, whether that be Jonathan’s dismissal of the villagers’ warnings as baseless superstition or Mrs. Westenra’s mistaken belief that bad smells will make her daughter sicker. And it’s by friendship, cooperation, and interchange of ideas - both between individuals and between worldviews - that the protagonists are able to fight back.

I kinda wanna talk about the parallel between the erotic queerness inherent in the blood-sucking vampirism, especially in the sexually-charged dynamics of one vampire creating/reproducing another by letting the other suck on their blood that flows from their open wound, and the imageries of medieval Christian mystics sucking on Christ’s bleeding wound, which has been interpreted by modern critics as an inherently queer act because 1. Christ is a hermaphroditic figure who is endowed with both divinity (= masculinity) and humanity (=femininity), 2. Christ’s body is seemingly male but on the Cross it’s wounded and permeable (which is a feminine quality) and its nurturing power (he literally gave birth to the Church) is maternal…which make his body so fluid and so QUEER, and 3. medieval mystics sucking on Christ’s life-giving blood and deriving ecstasy from that act has….it goes without saying….erotically queer connotation.
I think the very scandalousness of vampirism comes from the fact that while it is a fundamentally blasphemous, profane, soul-damning act, to become and to be a vampire takes a form that is dangerously close to or perhaps intentionally mimics the Christian religiosity in its inverse. And especially if you add queerness to that equation, these two look almost identical and I think it’s interesting (insert iCarly meme)

that post went around a little while ago about missing school & convincing yourself you really want to write essays and i'm feeling it a little right now ngl. except for me it's not the essays it's the art. and also you know i am still actually in school so this is really not the same thing at all lol. i am just Thinking about school because i recently got a move in date and it's less than a month away and summer is suddenly Ending.
i'm taking a class next semester called Color. four and a half hours of color theory every week!! for a whole semester!!! color theory and nothing but color theory!! in case it is not clear this sounds incredibly fun to me and i am sincerely hoping it lives up to expectations
i am Yearning for some paint on my fingers. yes i could just paint something right now but that is not the same. possibly i should do it anyway though. but not at 10pm. maybe tomorrow
anyway. i'm not sure why but i am currently feeling weirdly nostalgic for painting tiny squares of paper in a dorm room at a time when i would have preferred to be asleep. i miss going to the art building on the weekend when i can have one of the big classrooms with the huge tall windows all to myself and sit there cutting cardboard with a box cutter and hot gluing it back together for three hours and call that my homework. i miss trying in vain to get charcoal dust completely off my hands in one of the ten million random sinks in the hallway that all have big signs about how you should please not wash mineral spirits down them.
you know it really has been too long since i did art that wasn't digital. i should do some art just for the feel of it. not to make anything just to smear some charcoal around with my fingers or something. maybe do some exercises, but do them like i have to bring them into crit tomorrow and i only have a couple hours this evening and it's our first time with this technique anyway so they don't have to be that good. it would be good to remind myself why i'm doing this art school thing in the first place
