AFTG Headcanon Series [1] Andrew

hi everybody! a new series im doing which is basically complying loads of random headcanons on characters! this first part is Andrew!

Andrew's favourite colour is green. Not necessarily grass green, or even sage green, but a deep darker green. Kind of like the colour of leaves deep in the forest. The colour is calming, and he often finds himself leaning towards the colour in various different items - jumpers, mugs etc

He hates bananas. Don't ask me to expand, he just hates the texture and the peeling and the skin and the way they look bruised

Andrew has a really bad habit of picking at his cuticles and nails, it's so bad that he buys that disgusting tasting solution thing to put on his nails so he stops

When Neil becomes closer with Jean, Andrew inevitably finds himself speaking to him more as well. And when he finds out that Jean has gone through the same abuse he has, he finds himself silently relating and trusting Jean much more than before. It's both comforting and irritating.

On bad days, when they have the cats, Andrew is calmed by the light weight of Sir or King on his chest, and often strokes their fur when he can feel himself slipping away

He grows to like Katelyn. Not necessarily appreciate her or think about her when it is not 100% needed, but when he does find himself in her company, he respects her more than he ever expected to

When Nicky finally leaves for Germany permanently, Andrew Skype's him every Monday and Friday - it's hard with timezones but they make it work. Andrew will tell him how much he actually appreciates it at some point.

He has two tattoos. Medusa on his right arm, just below his shoulder, and a small '10' directly above his heart

He absolutely ADORES Chinese takeout. Literally anything from there he will just about inhale

Andrew has a habit of doodling on his hands!!!!! When he's bored in class he'll draw little random things whether it be patterns, keys or smoke. Sometimes, shamefully even, a little fox

Andrew doesn't immediately become 'fixed' when he and Neil start their relationship and nor does his recovery speed up. But the one time during his stay at Palmetto he nearly cries, is when Cass tries to approach him after his and Aaron's trial and Bee is the one to stand in her way

There are very few times Andrew is okay with being touched by someone who isn't Neil. However, Andrew can admit (at least, to himself) that occasionally when he does need it, he goes to Nicky for hugs

He loves to read!! But he has to use reading glasses. Neil squeals every time he puts them on

ANDREW. BLUSHES. EASILY.

Andrew loves crystals. It's not that he believes in anything different types are said to help with or do, but he likes reaching into his pocket and feeling their smooth weight

He also likes the way they look on bracelets and has a rose quartz one <3

Andrew in pink I'm sorry but like a pink oversized sweater that was originally Neil's? Crying.

I know it's set in a time period where it doesn't exist yet, but can you imagine Andrew with unlimited access to Disney+ ? He would adore it

When Andrew experiences his first year pro, he also experiences his first year alone in a while. No family around to annoy and protect, no Neil to talk to. It was sad, and for a while he found himself extremely lonely. But eventually, he learns to express these feelings and Neil helps as much as he can

Never gets over his fear of flying

He smiles. Eventually.

So he drove to Palmetto in silence, eyes finding Neil's sleeping form over and over again as he drove. Always watching as the blanket covering him rose and fell steadily.

He entered into far more familiar surroundings and drove past the campus to head straight to Abby's house as he had said he would.

He saw Kevin sat in the front window with a bottle in his hand that he sat down when Andrew pulled into the driveway. Moving to alert the others in the house and Andrew rolled his eyes.

Jean pinched his lips shut and looked away, running his fingertips over the crooked places in his hands where his bones hadn't healed properly.

Part of him wanted to go as far as physically possible from West Virginia, and Palmetto wasn't anywhere close to being far enough. Another part of him wanted to never pick up an Exy racquet again, despite knowing that it was the only way he'd be allowed to survive. The biggest part of him, however, wanted him to stay close to Kevin and Renee, even if that also meant staying close to Josten and Andrew. Even if that meant staying closer to Edgar Allen. There was little in the world that he wasn't willing to give to make sure that Kevin and Renee were safe. Hell, he also wanted to stay so that if the opportunity rose–despite everything–he could get someday get Riko out of the Nest as well.

Would love some general Andrew headcanons, also if you have headcanons about specifically the Twinyards-and-Nicky dynamic while the twins were in high school would love to hear those

I woke up to like 3 asks omg I was very, very happy

First of all, Andrew is a fun example or "looks like he could kill you, would rather eat ice cream, but definitely could if provoked" and I think it's very fun

even when he isn't at palmetto, like when he's living in different cities and traveling a lot for his pro games, he still calls Bee twice a week

sometimes with Aaron if they're having issues, which by then are rarer but still happen, cus siblings

the only other people he bothered to keep in touch with are Kevin and Renee

She bullied him into getting a tattoo of his own, its a dagger with thorny roses around it, all monochrome, on his forearm, he gets it after his senior year, its wonderful, Kevin told him it was great and Andrew almost smiled at him

on the topic of smiling, he doesn't often, but when he does, he has a crooked smile, and its mostly teeth, and Neil loves it

The twins and Nicky because YES (I'm pulling these outta my ass rn, but know that I adore this)

First and foremost, both of them pretended not to know Nicky at any point in time ever. Mainly because they're both edgelords and here is their nice and flamboyant cousin, and they didn't want it to damper the vibes (y'know, of hostility and trauma)

In all honesty, it was mostly Aaron. I keep to my idea that he was actually pretty well-liked in high school before he met Andrew. he was always pretty quiet, but he was smart, and he didn't put up with anyone's bullshit, he'd get into arguments often, but if you weren't a dick then neither was he.

He stopped talking almost entirely after his mom died, both because of all the complicated feelings that brought, and because Andrew said he couldn't have friends anymore

Andrew showed up and immediately scared the shit out of everyone, so really, Aaron would've probably lost most of his friends regardless of this

Nicky can't cook, and these boys lived off of takeout or whatever Aaron made out of their scarce groceries

also, Aaron is the only one who CAN cook

Tilda taught him, mostly cus she didn't wanna do it

as was Luther, Aaron mentioned him only once before Nicky got so red in the face trying not to cry that it just... wasn't

Nicky would have several meltdowns aver raising them, though never in front of them. They knew though

He's also the reason, or the final shove at least, that made Andrew forcibly get Aaron clean. Andrew was sick of Nicky feeling guilty about it

Anyways, yeah, the Andrew, some Nicky, and Twinyards, enjoy because everything about their whole thing makes me sad

WIP Wednesday?

Lil piece from a newer WIP named The Tunnel for now :)

The tunnel piqued Neil’s curiosity. Despite how close the town was to the sea, mountains rose up blocking off easy access from the north. From the beach, Neil could see the stretch of land a few miles out that was Fox Island. It was connected to the mainland with a large bridge that cut through the mountains with a tunnel.

He’d heard the rumors the first day he’d arrived. Been warned off from playing too close to the tunnel by some older woman at the grocery store. It wasn’t till he’d gone to school on the first day, uniform tie cinched too tight against his throat and heavy backpack digging into his shoulders, that he learned more.

The kids at school liked to talk, and they did so frequently. Neil had the utter horror of being the new kid. Attention focused on him as though he was a flame and the students were moths. There was a peppy blonde waiting for him at the main office, Marissa, who was in charge of showing him around that morning. His locker was boring and basic, set along the wall closest to his homeroom. He memorized the code on the paper he was given as Melissa (?) walked him through the halls and chatted about local activities happening. It was January, a week after his birthday when he’d joined the student body of Palmetto Academy.

Andriel Valentine’s Day

Neil has no idea it’s Valentine’s Day. After his run he’s greeted with a stack of pancakes, bacon, eggs, and a moment of confusion since this is their typical lazy Sunday routine. Then he notices the single rose in the Palmetto State Foxes tumbler on the kitchen island and it clicks. 

They’ve never celebrated Valentine’s Day before and is a little caught off guard. 

“I didn’t get you anything,” he says apologetically. 

“Shut up and eat before it gets cold.”

Neil slides up to the counter somewhat bashfully and Andrew glares at him until he eats.

Andrew never would have thought he’d be one to willingly participate in what he’d previously described as nauseating commercial feelings day. He wonders if past him would be horrified or proud of the changes he’s made over the years. He decides past him can go fuck himself when he sees how adorable Neil looks stuffing his face with pancakes; skin still flushed with a rosy glow from his run.

Unexpected flowers...

Walking back across the street to the Post Office parking lot, I noticed what looked like a kind of palm or palmetto, with two bright splashes of color in the shade. 

I think they’re a kind of moss rose or similar...the flowers look more like fancy daisies or fancy zinnias, but the leaves looked like succulents.

Evolution of a garden, 2020 to 2023.

The builder left us with 200 liriopes, 100 foxtail ferns, a couple of saw palmettos and wax myrtles, and 1 small live oak. Lots of digging, soil amending, planting, scorching heat, winter freezes, and trial and error later…here’s how the back garden is coming along. Zone 9a. Full sun.

Rock star plants: 'Coppertop' sweet viburnum, variegated privet, ‘Louis Philippe’ rose, white Muhly grass, Lomandra ‘Breeze’ (grass-like perennial), and ‘Mystic Spires’ and ‘Amistad’ salvias. They put up with everything this crazy climate throws at them.
