There are three types of Ukrainian artists. Those who were killed by russia, those who were repressed by russia and those whose legacy was stolen by russia. Armenian-Ukrainian artist Ivan Aivazovsky belongs to the third category. So here I present 6 fun  facts about his life.
••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
1. For almost an entire life he lived in the city of Feodosia in Crimea. He loved the city and was its patron, he financed museums, galleries and the development of the city.
For example, when the ancient Armenian church of Surb-Sarkis burned down, the restoration was carried out at the personal expense of Ivan Aivazovsky. From year to year, the painter donated the author's icons to the Church of St. Sergius - "Walking on Water" (1888; oil on canvas, 70 x 50), "The Last Supper" (1890; oil on canvas, 44 x 60), "The Virgin and Child ” (1891; oil on canvas; 125 x 103 cm), “Prayer for the Chalice” (1897; oil on canvas; 94 x 72).

2. History and archeology were his huge hobbies. He even participated in archeological digs. Though he hated reading.

••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
3. He created his marine landscapes not on the coast but in his workshop from memory.

The Ninth Wave, Ivan Aivazovsky, 1850, 221x322cm, oil on canvas, State russian museum
••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
4. He was the first Ukrainian artist to be exhibited in the Louvre.
Tumblr media
View of the island of Capri, Ivan Aivazovsky, 1845, 40x57cm, oil on canvas, Kyiv National Art Gallery
••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
5. Pope Gregory XVI (Gregorius PP. XVI; 1765-1846) unexpectedly wished to purchase a painting by an artist from Feodosia for the Vatican. So, at the beginning of 1841, the marinist repeated the seascape in his own way and, kneeling down, personally presented it to the Pontiff. Touched by the artist's noble gesture, in the late autumn of 1841, the governor of St. Peter personally awarded the Ukrainian Armenian with the Order of St. Sylvester and the Golden Militia.

Chaos. Creation of the world, Ivan Aivazovsky, 1841
••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
In 2023, during the bloody occupation of the Ukrainian city of Kherson by russians, not only were thousands of civilians tortured and killed, but numerous museums were also robbed. Three paintings by Ivan Aivazovsky were stolen from the Kherson National Museum of Art, along with thousands of artefacts from all over the country. The stolen paintings are: "The Storm Subsides," "The Sea," and "View of the City of Odesa." Reminder: Such actions are a direct violation of the Geneva Conventions.

Mariupol — Kathleen Truax
Painting (Oil on canvas), 40"x30"x1", 03/27/2022
Presented at The deYoung Open 2023 (ID #29)
Listed for $4000 *
Artist statement:
Out of great emotional upset over the invasion of Mariupol by Russia, I painted an abstraction on March 27, 2022 as a way to distract myself. I didn't consciously set out to paint anything to do with the invasion, but nevertheless must have done so, because my longtime partner took one look at the painting and exclaimed, "It's Mariupol!" I said without a moment of thought, "You're right!" Even the colors are related to the flag of Ukraine.
Kathleen Truax is an oil painter of landscapes, abstractions, portraiture, and figures. You can see a higher-quality version of this image and more of her artwork on her website, kathleentruaxart.com , or follow her on instagram @/krtruax .
The deYoung Open is a triannual exhibition featuring artwork by California-Bay Area creators. And if you're an artist from Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, or Sonoma County, you should consider making a submission for 2026! Applications will probably go live in early June 2026, so you have some time to plan :)
I am not an affiliate of The deYoung Museum, Kathleen Truax, or any of the artists featured in The deYoung Open 2023. I'm just posting to celebrate some amazing CA artists. If you are the artist and would like me to take this post down or add additional credit, please message me on Tumblr.
* Listing price is shown on the deYoung Open website at time of writing. The artwork may no longer be available for sale.

For the few followers I have, i wanted to share with you why I have written my latest poems. I have written these for my Ukrainian friend in Ukraine. He then translates them and sends them to his friends and other soldiers on the frontline who are interested. His people are fighting Russia, for those of you who don't know about the war. Russia invaded them and has committed atrocities towards the people of Ukraine. They are fighting for their lives and freedom.
I know Tumblr is a sobering, gentle place full of art and beautiful people and souls. Writers, photographers, painters, crafters, everything art is here on Tumblr. I do not mean to disturb anyone's peace with these poems I write.
So, with that said, I just wanted you to know more are coming and to my other writers! I have this idea! If you write a poem for Ukraine, I can get them sent to the soldiers on the front! It means so much to them to see support. They love art, poetry, and music just like we do!
Any form of support does not go unappreciated by them. It inspires them to keep fighting, to keep the world safe from the Kremlin, who wants to keep invading countries closer to Europe. They are fighting so we don't have to. It let's them know we care about them and the world stands behind them.
So if you have something you want to write for them, tag me, or send it to me and with your permission of course we can get it to the soldiers.
I hope this gets some support from you all. If not... well I can't say I didn't at least try.
Slava Ukraini! Glory to the Heroes!

Sonia Jia’s work is predicated on intimacy and vulnerability, drawing from personal experiences of childhood and sexual trauma.
Inherently otherworldly and undefinable, her paintings are often born from irrational moments—lost seconds spent dreaming, staring blankly, or even contemplating death. Born in Ukraine and raised in Hangzhou, China, Jia is currently based in London and has just graduated with an MA in painting from the Royal College of Art, though she works across painting and filmmaking.

Alexander Mikhalchuk's “Fundraiser Collection.”
Currently virtually on view at Haven Gallery in Northport, New York is a fundraising exhibition for and of Ukrainian artist Alexander Mikhalchuk's fascinating artwork.
From the Gallery:
Alexander Mikhalchuk is a Ukranian surrealist painter living and working in Irpin. He is an artist we have been looking forward to working with here at Haven Gallery, and whose work finds itself in our personal home collection. Throughout much of the war with Russia, Mikhalchuk has remained in his home city. Recently, his studio has faced devastation. His windows and doors were blown out by the explosions and fragments of the war. Fortunately, his paintings were unharmed.
A look at the devastation of his studio, and the homes of about 1500 residents.
In order to help our friend and amazing artist with the recovery of his studio, we are launching a collection of his original oil paintings for sale, as well as an open edition print launch of two artworks. 70% of all sale profits will go to Mikhalchuk and 30% will be donated to Revived Soldiers Ukraine, rsukraine.org, a non profit organization dedicated to providing aid to Ukraine.

Alan Arkin, a versatile and acclaimed actor who won an Oscar for his supporting role in Little Miss Sunshine, died at age 89. Arkin was known for his comedic and dramatic skills, alongside his ability to play a wide range of characters, from a Russian submarine captain in The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming, to a con artist in The In-Laws, to a grumpy grandfather in Little Miss Sunshine. He was also a director, writer, musician, and singer who performed with the folk group The Tarriers and composed songs for movies and Broadway shows.
He was born in Brooklyn, New York, on March 26, 1934, to Jewish parents who were immigrants from Ukraine and Germany. He developed his interest in acting at a young age and joined a children's theater group. He studied drama at Los Angeles City College and Bennington College and joined the Second City improv troupe in Chicago. In 1963 he made his Broadway debut in the musical From the Second City, which earned him a Tony Award nomination. He also starred in the original Broadway production of Luv, a comedy by Murray Schisgal.
Arkin made his film debut in 1966 in The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming, a satire about the Cold War that earned him an Oscar nomination for best actor. He received another nomination for his role as a deaf mute in The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter in 1968. He also appeared in films such as Wait Until Dark, Catch-22, The Seven-Per-Cent Solution, Edward Scissorhands, Glengarry Glen Ross, Grosse Pointe Blank, and Argo. He won his only Oscar for his performance as Edwin Hoover, a heroin-addicted grandfather who coaches his granddaughter for a beauty pageant in Little Miss Sunshine in 2006.
He was married three times and had three sons: Adam, Matthew, and Anthony, all are now actors. He also had four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. His death was announced by his family on Friday. He died of natural causes at his home in Los Angeles. His family said he was surrounded by love and laughter until the end. They also thanked his fans for their support and admiration over the years.
His legacy will live on through his work and influence on generations of actors and comedians. He was one of the pioneers of improvisational comedy and satire in film and theater. He brought humor and humanity to every role he played, regardless as a hero or a villain. He challenged stereotypes and conventions with his unconventional choices and performances. Arkin inspired many of his peers and successors with his talent, courage, and integrity. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and colleagues.

Everything is Illuminated was described as follow:
This one is a bit out there but it's a film (partially auto-biographical, mind you) about a young American Jewish man traveling to Ukraine to locate the woman who saved his Jewish grandfather from a Nazi massacre. The film addresses what the impact of war did to a community, how some people are actively trying to erase the misdeeds and crimes of the past by wiping away the memory of the massacre victims and their town. It also shows the resilience in people committed to remembering those that were lost to war.
Atlantic Wall was described as follow:
"Just copy pasting the wikipedia summary because I couldn't do as short and detailed
The story is set during the Second World War, under the occupation of France, and shortly before the Battle of Normandy. Léon Duchemin is a peaceful restaurateur whose wife left him twenty years earlier. He lived in the company of his eccentric sister Maria, and his young adult daughter Juliette. His clients represent the whole of society in the village, ranging from Rommel's driver, to resistance fighters and black market traffickers.
One evening, during an air raid, Jeff, a British aviator whose plane was shot down, almost falls into Juliette's room. The next day, Leon hangs out with Charlus, the craftsman responsible for repainting his storefront. Leon is misidentified as the painter in question and is taken to the Kommandantur, where they have a similar job to offer him. Leon inadvertently carries a secret plan concerning the fortifications of the Atlantic Wall. Having made the acquaintance of Jeff who understands the interest of the discovery made by Leon, the latter is therefore obliged to join the French Resistance. The resistance takes the two men to England. Leon then finds himself in a British army training camp, under the orders of Jeff himself. He does not yet know that his daughter Juliette is pregnant and that the aviator will become his son-in-law."
