brush theory doodle
my brush settings + how i use them under the cut
I use paint tool SAI
PEN BRUSH • LINER + FLAT COLORS
this is the basic pen that comes with SAI. I use it for sketching, lining, and throwing down colors. It's very lightweight to use, and responds great to pressure. i like how soft it looks but it's still solid for selecting areas and paint bucket filling when coloring later on
MARKER BRUSH • BLENDING COLORS
this is the marker tool, i have it set to a fine flat tip to use like a copic chisel tip end. It's semi transparent so it works just like a marker, more pressure will give more color. It's great to add a wash of shading in a picture when using on a separate layer. When coloring on one layer, it'll pick up colors and blend them like when painting with oil paints.
here is an example of using it to lay down shadows in this wip, but it leaves a lot of harsh edges that i'll blend out with a watercolor brush.
SUGOI BRUSH • LINER
this brush i got from an artist that's no longer on tumblr...
i do not use this to color because it pulls colors really weird when painting on one layer. But it's great if you want very straight lines. I use this when i want thicker consistent lines like my merch art
it also layers very fun because it's semi transparent. I use it when I want very soft casual lines like in this illustration, see how the lines blur into the colors on the layer underneath?
CRAYON BRUSH • TEXTURE
this is my favorite brush. it mimics a rough 2B pencil, it has a beautiful texture. However, it has so much texture that unless you have very thick lines it'll leave pixel gaps so you cannot use the paint bucket fill/select tool making it not great for lining.
I use it to add blush lines and shade hair like Serafina's from my Ghoulfriends comic. Use it on a seperate layer for the sharpest results
i saw this brush theory trend on instagram and wanted to join because i love talking about all i put into my art
bye

Yo quick question, what drawing app + brushes do you normally use? fking love the jacq applin reaction image btw
I use Clip Studio more often, but from time to time I also use Paint Tool Sai 2. As for brushes, I juggle around a lot of brushes but the current ones I'm using are:
CLIP STUDIO PAINT BRUSHES:
which I got from WolfyTheWitch if I remember correctly, in their twitter they linked a drive for all the brushes they use. Pencil R1 is somewhere in there
It's one of the base brushes CSP comes with. It's in realistic brushes. I usually use it for coloring or simple shading
I think it's Sand Pen in english? It's ID is 1959800. here's the icon from the Asset Store
As of this post, there's a daily log in bonus happening within the asset store and the lowest Free Clippy they give out is 15 so get it while you can!
Then this one, called the Heavy Painted Brush. It's ID is 1902311
And, PAINT TOOL SAI 2
[1] It's from a duplicate of the default Pencil Brush, but with a smooth crayon-like feel [2] Another made from the duplicate of the Pencil Brush, this time grittier and chalkier
Literally just those two.
When I use CSP I just download new shit most of the time but those are one of my favorites. Please feel free to take note of them and try it for yourself! Also thank you! I like it a lot too <3

I know you've already answered questions about your brushes, I found some asks from 3 years ago, but I'm curious if you've changed things up somewhat or if you use the same brushes and settings from 3 years ago
I am not 100% sure! I could swear I haven't, but just in case I'll share them again!
Main drawing brush
My first brush is this! I use it to add color and to do lineart.
The setting you see in 'Multiply' indicates it'll get darker the longer my stroke is or the more I press. Think of it as a pencil.
I sometimes will change it to 'Normal' in case I don't want it to change
Blending brush
The second brush is for blending! It does not pain but it drags the colors in the active layer with transparency relative to the pressure (if you press hard, it'll drag it 100%, if you press less, it'll drag the color more diluted, also will blend with the other colors)
Chalk/crayon brush
There's an occasional third brush which is just a simple chalk stroke I use for details here and there.
That'd be about it! I'm always willing to share my resources, so be free to ask for anything anytime!

bestie wake up. i found a new shading brush that i really actually like.
the shading was done on a layer on top of the flats and blended out by using the switch to transparency function (my best friend), have fun!
