Okay, fuck it Friday! Thanks for the tags @forthewolves @lover-of-mine @devirnis @rewritetheending @daffi-990! Here is a silly little fic I’m adding to the soft prompts collection!
Eddie pats down his jacket, making sure his wallet hasn’t magically teleported out of it in the hour or two since he took it off.
“The mint kind, dad, remember.”
“I got it.”
There’s the sound of glass clattering in the kitchen, ringing as loud as the laughter that accompanies it. In the living room there’s sudden cheering as one of the kids gets ahead of another in whatever video game they’ve set up. Beside him, Chimney is counting on his fingers.
“It’s-Its, mint kind. Drumsticks. Rocket pops. Bobby wants neapolitan. Those caramel chocolate bar things for Hen and Karen.”
“Are you going to have room in your freezer for all this?” Eddie wonders, thinking about how packed his own freezer is. He should really clean it out. Maybe Buck’ll come over next day off and help. He loves leftovers, and organizing.
“I’m fully expecting everyone to eat themselves sick so it won’t be a problem,” Chim shrugs. “Rocky road for you, yeah?”
“Mhmm.”
“Okay.” Chimney squints. “I can’t remember what Buck said.” He squints more specifically in Eddie’s direction, clearly waiting for a response.
And Eddie could say Well, Buck cycles through ice cream favorites every few weeks because he likes to try new things. It’s been white chocolate raspberry recently, but he might be ready to switch it up, it’s been long enough, and the kind he likes is sort of expensive so he would never ask you to get it for him, but that feels like the kind of statement that would get him that sort of raised eyebrow flat mouth look he doesn’t understand so he goes with “Uh, I’ll ask.”
Buck is leaning on the counter sandwiched between Hen and Bobby, half full drink in his hand entirely forgotten and listing a little dangerously to the left as he listens to Karen talk about a new project at work. He’s smiling like he doesn’t know he’s doing it, and his eyes are wide in the way they get when he’s absorbed in a story, and Eddie doesn’t want to interrupt but his son has no such qualms.
“Buck, are you gonna come take your turn on mario kart? Nobody can beat May.”
Buck’s smile turns into his Christopher smile, wide and eyes crinkly. “I’ll be there in a minute, bud. Save rainbow road for me.”
“Buck, what ice cream did you want?”
Buck’s attention flicks over to him. “Oh, I’ll just take one of the drumsticks or something.” A beat or two passes while Eddie makes an unimpressed face and Buck laughs, ducking his head. “Fine, I’ll- uh, if they have something coffee flavored that looks good I’ll take that.”
“Alright-“
“Oh, Eddie, while you’re there will you pick up more Doritos?” Maddie asks, waving cheesy fingers over an empty bowl.
“Sure.”
“Ooh, and barbecue chips?” Hen asks, head tilted to the side imploringly.
“Yeah, okay-“
“If you get an avocado or two I think there’s everything to make guacamole,” Bobby says thoughtfully.
“Uh-“
Buck grins at him. “I’ll text you a list.”
“Thank you,” Eddie grins back, and then turns to Chris. “Alright mijo, we’ll be back in a bit.”
“Okay,” Chris says. “And can you get butter popcorn?”
“They’ve got the kernel kind, and a popper and everything.”
“I like the microwave kind,” Chris says, pouting a little. “It’s a party, dad.”
Eddie snorts, but also immediately gives in. “Fine. See you in a minute with your nasty popcorn, sir.”
He leans down to kiss Chris' forehead, leans up to kiss Buck, pats his pocket one more time (wallet still there) and then heads down the hallway. Chimney is standing there frozen, so Eddie steps around him towards the door. He’s probably trying to think of his own chip preference, like he’s not as big of a Doritos fan as Maddie is. Eddie wonders if the corner store they’re going to will have the salt and vinegar chips Buck likes-
Buck-
Eddie feels a strange sensation like all his muscles locking up for a moment, before he slowly turns around.
“What did I… just… do?”
Chimney — who, there it is, he’s making the face, eyebrows raised and mouth flat, though it looks slightly more hysterical than usual — shakes his head and throws up his hands in a shrug. Helpful. Eddie stumbles the few steps back towards the kitchen. Buck is talking to Karen now, though everyone else in the room is also making the face with varying levels of giddy intensity. When Bobby sees Eddie come back in the room he has to hide his expression behind his glass of orange juice.
“-never knew that worms played such an important part in-“ Buck’s voice suddenly squeaks to a halt mid sentence, and he whips around to stare open mouthed at Eddie in the doorway. “Did- did you?”
“Uh huh,” Eddie nods, eyebrows furrowed. “Is that- uh. Is that okay?”
“Y- yeah, Eddie- yeah.”
Buck moves towards him and Eddie is pulled in his direction like a magnet. They meet in the middle of the kitchen and grab each other’s hands. Eddie is vaguely aware of Maddie’s muffled giggling somewhere to his right, but it doesn’t seem to matter very much at the moment.
“Should-" Buck looks and sounds absolutely confused, and is clinging tight to his hands. "Should we get married?”
“What?” Eddie laughs, remembering the time he’d held Julia Stanton’s hand in kindergarten and she’d told him that meant they were husband and wife. “I- we only just-“ but, suddenly, he imagines it. Being married to Buck. Waking up to him every day, and doing taxes together. It’s all he wants, it’s what he wants more than anything. “Okay,” he says, nodding his head in a frantic yes. “Yeah. Alright.”
“Oh, lord,” Bobby laughs in the background, setting his glass on the counter so he can rest his hands on his knees. Hen rubs his back, other hand covering her face as she tries not to lose it.
“Yeah?” Buck asks, looking stunned, a smile slowly spreading across his face.
“Yes, I’d- I want- you’re beautiful.” Eddie lets go of one of Buck’s hands — oh, he thinks he’d like to hold his hand forever, why did they never do this before — and puts his palm on Buck’s cheek, tracing under his eye with his thumb. “I gotta go get ice cream first though.”
“Oh my god,” says Karen, voice strangled.
“I’ll go with you,” Buck decides, but then Chimney is there with his hands on Eddie’s shoulders.
“Oh no,” he says, “We let the two of you go and we’ll lose you in the night, and then there will be no ice cream and the children will riot.”
“You’re the one who was demanding drumsticks in the first place,” Eddie points out, not even looking away from Buck’s face.
“And I will join the mob with the pitchforks. Let’s go, lover boy.” Chimney leans over to pat Buck's arm. "I promise I'll get your- jesus, are we accepting that as an actual proposal- yeah? Okay- I'll get your fiancé back swiftly and in one piece."
Eddie can do nothing but grin dumbly back at Buck as Chimney all but drags him outside. There are stars out, sort of, as many as you ever get in a city as big as Los Angeles, and Eddie feels a strange urge to write poetry about them.
"Did you know I was in love with him?"
"Had a pretty good idea," Chim says, voice strained.
"Why didn't I know that?"
Chimney hacks a cough into his elbow. "I- I really couldn't possibly answer that."
It's taking Eddie a tremendous amount of effort to put one foot in front of the other in the right order. "I feel like I'm drunk."
Chimney claps him on the shoulder. "You're going through a lot of change."
Eddie thinks about it for a moment. "No, I'm not."
“Hm?”
Chimney spins around to face Eddie as he stops walking all together. “It’s… I mean, we might get to kiss now,” Eddie says, pulse suddenly feverish as he considers that for a few seconds. He shakes his head to get back on track. “But… It’s Buck. Haven’t… I mean… It’s always been like this. My life is his already.”
Chimney is making a new face now, still a smile but it’s twisted up sideways and his eyes are a little watery. He throws his head back with a wet scoffing sound and hooks his arm through Eddie’s, tugging him along again. “Well, what the fuck, I’m stupidly happy for you. Unbelievable.”
“Thank you,” Eddie laughs, leaning into him a little. “Oh shit, I- I have to get a ring.”
Chimney cackles into his shoulder. “Might be a difficult find at the corner store, but I’ll keep my eyes peeled.”
When they stagger through the doors of the 24 hour market a few blocks from Maddie and Chimney’s place the bored clerk looks at them like they are drunk, and Eddie tries to take a few steadying breaths. “I’ll get ice cream, you grab snacks?”
Chimney nods, and they split up. Eddie stares down at the freezer and tries to remember any list of anything he’s ever learned in his life before his phone buzzes in his pocket.
Buck 8:43 PM Mint It’s-Its, drumsticks, rocket pops, neapolitan, caramel bars, rocky road, coffee ice cream?, Doritos, barbecue chips, avocados (and tortilla chips please), microwave popcorn
Buck 8:44 PM also I didn’t say it but I love you Eddie
Buck 8:44 PM sorry I should have waited for you to get back to say it maybe but
Buck 8:45 PM I just wanted you to know it. I didn’t want there to be any more time where you didn’t know it.
Eddie’s breath catches somewhere between lungs and throat. He’s standing close enough to the freezer box that he can feel it’s hum in his knees, or maybe that’s just Buck.
“Hey, Diaz.”
Eddie turns in time to catch the small package Chimney tosses at him. Peach rings. Eddie laughs a little helplessly.
Eddie 8:47 PM i am going to be back so soon and tell you in person but me too buck
Eddie grabs all the ice cream in record time if anyone ever recorded the time for such things, and the rest of the trip feels like a race. He taps his foot as the poor clerk scans everything while shooting him vaguely unimpressed looks, and he’s at least a few feet ahead of Chimney the whole walk back. Finally, the door, finally the hallway, finally Eddie is bursting back into the kitchen. Buck is standing with Bobby’s arm around his shoulders and Chris leaning against his side and he looks lit up with happiness, smile practically glowing. Eddie feels an answering one on his own face.
“Here,” he says, holding the ice cream bag out sideways and hoping someone will take it. Karen does, with a snort. “Oh, uh, wait-“ Eddie leans over to dig for the bag of gummies, grabbing his prize and grinning at her. “Thank you.”
“No problem,” she laughs, leaning forward to kiss his cheek before starting to dig out the ice cream for distribution.
When Eddie looks up Buck has moved to stand in front of him. “Hi.”
Buck ducks his head like his smile is too heavy to hold it up anymore. “Hi, Eds.”
“Oh,” Eddie says, taking the half step necessary to press close to him all over. “Hey, I love you. I love you, too. I didn’t realize, but I absolutely do.”
Buck laughs, what a wonderful sound, and wipes his eyes with one hand. “I love you so much, Eddie.”
“Okay!” Laughter goes up around them. “Okay, I have-“ Eddie tears open the plastic, fishes out a single peach ring. “It’s the best I could do short notice.”
“What…” Buck looks down at the candy, and then starts laughing and crying harder as Eddie grabs his hand and does his best to roll the gummy circle onto his ring finger. “Wait, I- I was the one who proposed.”
“There’s a whole bag of them,” Eddie says, waving it around. “You wanna-“
“Yeah, uh huh-“ Buck takes a peach ring of his own, slides it onto Eddie’s finger, and it’s truly ridiculous but even in this Buck treats him so gently, cradling Eddie’s hand like it’s a precious thing. It makes Eddie feel a little lightheaded. The sugar of the gummy is gritty against his skin, and he has to hold his fingers weird to accommodate the bulk of it, but Buck is looking at them like they’d just exchanged diamonds, and Eddie isn’t sure he’s ever been in a more perfect moment. But then Buck leans down and Eddie moves forward and they’re kissing, really kissing, Buck’s arms sliding around his waist like they’re meant to fit there and Eddie cradling his face between his hands, and Chris shouts in delighted disgust and there’s cheering and more laughter around them, and Eddie thinks, stunned, that he might get a life of perfect moments with this man.
They are surrounded by friends and family, so Buck pulls back before either of them can really get lost in each other. “You’re sure?” He whispers. “You don’t have to- I was just- you actually want to get married?”
“Yes,” Eddie says immediately. “And also come home, please. Every day, like- move in with me. You don’t have to use the couch.”
Chimney snorts behind them. Buck nods, and they’re close enough that his nose almost pokes Eddie in the eye. “Yeah, yeah- I wanna come home.”
Eddie kisses him again — perfect, the way their lips fit together is perfect — and then looks for Chris. “Hey, mijo, you wanna have a sleepover?”
“Sure,” Chris says, “With who?”
“Uh.” Eddie cranes to look around Buck at anyone else in the room.
“We’ll take him,” Hen says, raising a hand and looking extremely amused and entirely fond.
“With Denny,” Eddie says to Chris.
“Okay,” Chris says, crunching his face up. “I don’t want to be there if you’re going home to make out.”
“We absolutely are,” Eddie says, as Buck sputters a little. He disentangles himself from Eddie and crouches in front of Chris.
“Chris… I just want to make sure this is okay with you. I- I love your dad very much, and I love you so much, and if it makes you uncomfortable-“
“Buck,” Chris says, slightly exasperated, as he wraps his arms around his shoulders in a hug. “I love you, too. And I kind of thought you were married for awhile when I was little, so you’re just catching up.”
“Oh,” Buck says, watery. “Yeah?”
“You take care of us,” Chris says, leaning back to look at him. “And you’re at our house all the time.”
Buck laughs, and Eddie’s lungs stutter along with him. “Well, okay then. I’ll keep doing both of those things. Sounds good?”
“Sounds good,” Chris says, already looking towards the living room. “Are you going to play Mario kart, now?”
“Uh,” Buck says, looking up at Eddie. “Is it okay if I take a rain check on that?”
Chris heaves a sigh. “Fine, but you better practice for next time. May still hasn’t lost.”
“And I’m not going to!” She calls from the other room. “Also, congratulations!”
“Thank you,” Buck and Eddie call together. Buck gives Chris another hug, and Eddie squeezes him tight as he makes his way to the living room.
“Bye, Superman. We’ll see you tomorrow. I love you.”
“Love you too, dad.”
Buck takes his hand again. Eddie wants to kiss him again, but he thinks once he starts he might never stop. “Anybody mind if we duck out early?” He asks the room at large, fully planning on backing out the door no matter what the answer is.
Chimney pats his arm. “Please for the love of god leave my home.”
“Got it,” Eddie says, pulling a giggling Buck towards the door.
“Paperwork!” Bobby calls. “Monday! And don’t get married until I can get everyone the day off!”
“I-“ Eddie looks into Buck’s eyes, kisses him once on the cheek because they’re in the hallway and no one can see them anymore probably. “I’m not gonna make any promises about that.”
“Wait-“
“Bye!” Buck calls, cheerfully, and then they’re out on the front porch.
And, well, they’re really out of sight of the others now, so Eddie pulls him down for another kiss, intent on finding out what his molars taste like, but then the door is opening again.
“Gross,” Chimney says. “Take your ice cream with you.”
Rocky road and coffee, still cold but getting warmer, land not entirely gracefully in Eddie’s arms. The door closes again. “I told him he wouldn’t have freezer room. These are gonna melt.”
Buck takes his tub, grinning a mile wide. “We better get home quick, then.”
“For the ice cream,” Eddie nods, cheeks hurting with his smile.
“Yep.” Buck says. “The ice cream.”
They clasp their free hands together, and then, breathless and laughing, run to the car.
It’s kind of late but if anyone is still around and has stuff to post (you could also consider this as being tagged for inspiration Saturday if you want) @callaplums @shortsighted-owl @buckactuallys @shitouttabuck @wildlife4life @eddiebabygirldiaz @bigfootsmom @henswilsons @homerforsure

BLACK TIE OPTIONAL: PART TWO
Tumblr media
Summary: The last time we saw Vanessa, she was swooning over Dean’s lasting impression. Now, we fast-forward a year to see what she’s up to.
Pairings: Dean Winchester x OFC Vanessa Martinelli, Sam Winchester x OFC Emma Olsen (background)
Warnings: 18+ ONLY, HBO RomCom bullshit, IDK if this is angst or not, but there are feels
Author's notes: Follow-up to Plus One.
We’re skipping to the actual rehearsal because, as an ex-event professional, I tend to get bogged down by etiquette and details instead of the shenanigans that Dean and Vanessa have come to be known for and which we all love. So, we will remain in tight focus on those two and in vaseline-lensed focus on the event itself.
Thanks, as always, to @stunudo and @brrose-apothecary for pre-reading and being my friends.
PART TWO
“Dude, this food,” Sam whispers, scanning the room. “But this place is huge and heavily staffed. Remember the last time we were in Chicago?"
Dean ignores Sam’s concern over supernatural crime families in favor of delicious, impeccably presented food.
“It’s just... tacos? But not.” Dean stares at the spread of the taco bar. “Sorcery.”
“Dean... Lassiter? Duval? Any of this ringing a bell?”
Dean shrugs. “That was, what, two years ago? Not our problem — especially if you stop saying their names out loud.”
Then his eyes go wide. “What is this?!” He scoops mango salsa onto his plate like he’s never seen a mango in his life.
Sam pulls a face, realizing that Dean has probably not ever seen a mango in his life and remembered it fondly, and chooses not to tell Dean that there’s fresh, healthy fruit in what he’s putting on his plate. He’d rather Dean be pleasantly surprised by the topping.
“Hey,” Emma pops up next to them, fidgeting and forcing a smile. “Our table’s over there whenever you guys’re ready.”
The boys stare at her for a moment because her voice is pitched higher than it was when she was visibly more relaxed in their suite, and her smile looks painful. She motions to a table where Vanessa appears to be barely surviving the onslaught of three other women.
“Hopefully sooner rather than later?” Emma turns back to face the boys with flushed cheeks and pleading eyes.
Dean peeks around her. “What’s up over there?”
“Nicole’s grilling Van about you being here and asking a bunch of questions about you.” She motions to Dean and Sam respectively before reaching between them for a tortilla chip to scoop into the mango salsa before shoving it into her mouth.
“Who’s Nicole?” Sam asks, also scooping into the mango salsa.
Dean rolls his eyes and answers with his mouth full. “The bride from the last wedding, total ‘zilla.”
“God, that salsa’s good,” Emma mutters, licking her lips as she swipes the salt from her fingers. “Anyway, we need you.”
Sam draws a breath, getting pulled into the verdant depths of Emma’s desperate gaze. He soaks in her anxious vibrations for a moment, then deftly sets the spoon aside to give her his full attention and warmest smile.
“Lead the way,” he says, stepping away from the table with his plate in one hand and the other on the small of her back.
Dean watches his brother glide through the crowd like a white knight. He considers making a joke of asking Sam if he lost his soul again somewhere between the guacamole and sour cream but opts out, realizing that his little brother is as committed to showing up for Emma as Dean is to Vanessa. He follows the couple to their table without any wisecracks.
Sam wedges his gigantic frame between the pack of bridesmaids and a couple of chairs; one he pulls out for Emma, the other he barely squeezes himself into. One of the women scoffs and stumbles like Sam shoved her or something, which he didn’t, but he does remain a buffer between his date and the Mean Girls.
Dean is inspired.
He winks at his brother and Emma as he swaggers past the group of women. Two of them he doesn’t recognize gawk at him as Nicole glares.
He sets his plate on the table and mirrors Sam’s actions by pulling out and patiently holding Vanessa’s chair for her. “Hungry, kitten?”
Vanessa grins and wiggles out of the circle of women.
“Hi, Dean,” Nicole says like they’re old friends or enemies. He forgot how fucking bitchy her voice and facial expressions are. He thinks she must be a miserable person and not just on her own wedding day.
He tosses her a polite nod. “Hey, Tracy.”
Vanessa tries not to cackle at his consistently intentional misnaming of her frenemy and Nicole’s subsequent sneer of derision.
“I am hungry,” she says, smoothing her skirt and pivoting to take the proffered seat, but before she can sit down, Dean leans into her with a conspiratorial smirk.
“Missed you,” he coos, kissing her smirk.
And sparks fly.
--
They’re seated with Nicole and Katie and their respective partners, which should be uncomfortable since Nicole is doing her best to make it so, but Dean can’t be bothered to care.
Vanessa’s skin is like a fucking beacon to his senses. He can’t keep his hands or lips to himself, and Vanessa purrs like a real kitten in response. Dean starts to feel a little high from the simple acts of a traditional couple.
“Sir? Another tequila?”
“Uhh,” Dean blinks, pausing to look down at his half-empty rocks glass. He’s ordered two tequilas on the rocks since they’ve been downstairs, which isn’t a lot for him, but he doesn’t want it to be, either. “You know what, I’ll take a beer.”
“Yes, sir.” The server produces a small drink menu. “We have a selection of—”
Dean waves his hand. “Just somethin’ three-point-whatever.” He leans nearer to the server but doesn’t lower his voice at all, so everyone within earshot can hear him. “Don’t wanna disappoint my girl later, know what I’m sayin’?”
He winks before settling back into his seat with his arm stretched across the back of Vanessa's chair, and the server discreetly nods and tucks the menu away. “Yes, sir.”
“You could never disappoint me,” Vanessa reassures him like they talk this way all the time.
Nicole and Katie give each other a look while Zach and Ryan appear to be rethinking their beverage choices.
Dean knows, though, that he could and will disappoint Vanessa. Not tonight, probably, but it will happen. Instead of saying that out loud, he focuses on showing her a good time like he planned.
“So,” Nicole sighs as she tosses her used napkin to her plate. “Are you guys coming to Brando’s?”
Dean arches a brow and shifts his gaze to his brother with a pointed look.
“Babe?” Sam looks at Emma. “I know you’re tired, but we can probably go for one, don’t you think?”
Emma grins. “You’re right. We should show.”
Sam nods before looking back at Nicole. “I’m sorry, we’ve had dinner together and still haven’t met. I’m Sam, Emma’s boyfriend.”
“Boyfriend. What about Joshua?”
Nicole motions across the room where a group of Abercrombie rejects are measuring each other’s dicks. The guy doing most of the talking has his arm tightly wrapped around a girl who appears no older than 18 and is absolutely enthralled by the conversation.
“Apparently, the new girl enjoys lengthy descriptions of his watch collection,” Vanessa mutters at Dean’s side.
Dean can feel his lip curl because he looks like the leader of that pack of douchebags he hustled the night Rowena tried to kill him. The first time.
Nicole turns back to face the group. “Last I heard, you were still crying your eyes out over him.”
“Hmm.” Sam furrows his brow. “That must’ve been a while ago.”
The smirk on Sam’s face sends Dean into the stratosphere.
“Well, let’s get the bar outta the way.” Dean pushes away from the table to stand, holding out a hand from Vanessa. “We still got catchin’ up to do, kitten.”
Vanessa takes his hand, barely stifling a giggle.
“Yes, Dean, we all know what you mean by catching up.” Nicole rolls her eyes as she stands, smoothing the front of her dress. “Also, did I miss the memo on matching our dates like it’s prom?”
“C’mon, Nicki,” Zach nudges his wife.
Katie and the groomsmen have warmed up to the brothers and don’t seem to have ever shared Nicole’s animosity toward Vanessa — and, now, Emma by extension — and Nicole herself has evened out a bit, but she’s still got some snark left in her.
“What? We aren’t matching. Katie and Ryan aren’t matching. But Van and Dean look like they’re headed to a red carpet somewhere.”
“A red carpet or prom?” Emma pokes the bear.
“Shut up, Emma.”
Nobody hides their snorts and laughter as they all leave the table to head out for the bar.
Before they can get out the door, the mother of the bride stops them. She’s petite with dark red hair, dark eyes, and a bright smile.
“Oh, Van, you look so pretty.”
“Thanks, Mrs. Ricci.” Vanessa hugs the woman.
Dean watches Vanessa twirl at the woman’s request to see the back. He didn’t realize it before Nicole said something, but the flowers intertwined with black lace skulls on her bodice match his dark red pants.
“What a unique dress. You have such great taste! All you girls look so pretty!”
There’s a chorus of “thanks, Mrs. Ricci” from Katie, Emma, and Nicole.
“How long are we staying out?” Sam asks Dean, pulling his attention from Vanessa, who shines like a diamond in a coal mine.
“Up to them, I guess,” Dean mutters, never taking his eyes off her.
“Well, you kids have fun tonight,” Mrs. Ricci says. “But don’t stay out too late! And don’t let Toni drink too much. You know how she bloats, and we can barely get her into her dress as it is.”
Vanessa looks desperate to run from the extended conversation. He doesn’t want to insert himself unless she asks, but decides to test the waters.
“Hey, sweetheart, you ready?”
Vanessa looks up at him with relief and gratitude, clasping her hand in his. Butterflies flap their wings in her gut, and she tries to remind herself that the look in his eyes is temporary and meant as a show.
“Well... who’s the handsome gentleman, Van?”
Vanessa smiles, turning back to face Mrs. Ricci. “This is—”
“Dean.” Dean extends his free hand to Mrs. Ricci, and she accepts. He turns her wrist and kisses the back of her hand. “I’m this beautiful girl’s plus one.”
Mrs. Ricci raises her eyebrows and nods, eyeing them closely. “I see... I didn’t know you had someone, Van. You make a lovely couple. How long have you been together?”
“Little over a year, ma’am,” Dean easily answers.
“Well, then, I guess you’ll be talking marriage soon as well. You better catch that bouquet tomorrow!” Mrs. Ricci teases Vanessa.
“Oh, we’re all set!” Vanessa chirps, not realizing how what she’s just said sounds.
“Really?!” Mrs. Ricci’s eyes go wide. “When’s the wedding?”
Vanessa blinks as her skin prickles. “Next fall?”
“Congratulations!”
“Yeah, congrats, Van,” Nicole deadpans with a roll of her eyes because even she knows this is all an act. “Are we going or what?”
Vanessa keeps her eyes on anyone but her date for the rest of their night out.
--
Dean gently closes the door to their lock-off, shutting out Emma’s squeals of delight and Sam’s laughter. He watches Vanessa busy herself around the room as he unfastens the cuffs of his button-up and rolls up his sleeves.
He isn’t well-practiced in relationships. He and Cassie always fought, and Lisa was easygoing. His relationship with Vanessa was never supposed to reach this level, so he isn’t sure how to break the tension.
“Hey.”
Vanessa's wary gaze doesn’t quite meet his. “I’m just gonna brush my teeth.”
She motions toward the vanity and takes the last few steps barefoot to get there. Dean appears behind her in the mirror as she reaches for the toothpaste.
“Give it a minute.” Dean touches her wrist.
Vanessa tenses. “I don't know why I reacted that way.”
Dean shakes his head. “Turn around.”
She sighs and slumps in defeat before turning toward him with her eyes on the floor.
“Look at me.”
She swallows and reluctantly drags her gaze upward. “Dean, I’m sor—”
He pulls her in, wrapping her in his arms. “You didn’t do anything wrong.”
“She asked when we were getting married, and I said next fall.”
Her voice is muffled against his chest, but she sounds miserable, and Dean can’t help but chuckle.
He pulls back to look her in the eye. “Who’re you worried about? That old lady?”
Vanessa blinks away the onslaught of embarrassed tears from her eyes. “You, Dean. Aren’t you... freaked or mad or...”
Dean shakes his head, grabbing a tissue for her. “Why would I be mad? Or freaked.”
She takes the tissue, and he crosses his arms over his chest as he leans against the wall. He likes being with her, but he isn’t marrying anyone any time soon — they both know that. What bothers him right now is that she regrets such a simple blunder.
Vanessa dabs at the corners of her eyes and sniffles. “I said that... so now you probably think I’m clingy. And now I’m crying.”
She throws her hands up in the air and focuses on Dean, who’s watching her with a quiet smile and, if she isn’t mistaken, amusement.
“Why are you smiling like that?! You didn’t sign up for this!”
“Nessa.” Dean pushes away from the wall to gently grasp her shoulders. “If you had any idea what my brother and I do? You’d get how you could never turn me off short of becoming an actual fucking monster. I can’t quit you.”
Vanessa closes her eyes and sighs. “The problem is that I like you, Dean. A lot.”
She opens her eyes, and Dean’s face has shifted to an unbearably soft melancholy. He nods, holding her gaze. “Yeah. Me too.”
“But we barely know each other,” she continues, taking a step forward and smoothing a palm down the sateen placard of his black button-up. “And you have some secret and dangerous job that I’ll never understand.”
“What makes you think it’s dangerous?” Dean sits back against the edge of the bathroom counter, wrapping his hands around her lace-enveloped ribcage, and lets her wedge herself between his open knees.
Her eyes land on his mouth. He’s so beautiful. She’s told him a dozen times. But he’s also a walking, talking mountain of trauma, and Vanessa guesses that damage extends beyond physical.
“Scar tissue, for one.” She reaches for his right hand and raises it between the two of them, knuckles up. “And busted knuckles?”
“Just a bar fight, honey,” Dean mutters, and Vanessa huffs a wry laugh, rolling her eyes up at him again.
“Maybe, but I doubt it.” She doesn’t drop her gaze as she dips in to press a kiss to his healing knuckles. “I’ve never known what I wanted in the long run, but... I know I want you. Now.”
Dean eyes her quietly for a moment before dipping in to kiss her. “You got me.”
He kisses her for a long time, pushing one hand up into the back of her hair and resting the other over her clavicle and breastbone. His thumb and first two fingers dance along either side of her neck, and she moans into his mouth.
He stands and steps away from the vanity, pulling her with him toward the bed, kissing her the whole way. She works on the buttons of his shirt as he opens the zipper of her dress. Black and red lace and chiffon flutter to the floor, and she walks over it.
Once she has his shirt undone and pulled from his pants, she slides her hands over his hot skin and pushes the garment to the floor. Dean stops at the edge of the bed with his hands on her waist as she pulls his belt and oxblood pants open and off.
“Hey.” Dean clasps her hand in his before she can reach inside his boxers. “Just listen a minute, OK?”
Vanessa slowly brings her anxious gaze to meet his.
“You’re, what, 26 years old?”
She drops her eyes and starts to pull away. “Twenty-seven, and I don’t need your condescension.”
“No, no, no.” Dean grasps her wrists in his hands and pulls her in again. “Not condescending, reassuring. Nessa... you don’t need to have anything figured out right now. You got your whole beautiful, perfect life ahead of you to fuck up and win.”
Her brow furrows, and Dean grins.
“Sometimes I wish somebody’d told me that when I was 27.”
Even if someone had told him, Dean had and has a different life than hers. His path was cut out for him long ago, and all he can do is live it, get up, and kick ass. It still would have been nice to hear.
Vanessa turns into him again, resting her hands on his beautifully scarred and tattooed chest. She lightly traces a long-healed gash until she runs into his tattoo and circles it.
“You my guru, now?” She flicks her eyes up to his.
Dean shrugs, sliding his hands up her sides along her bodysuit's soft, plain black fabric. “Can be anything you want.”
She closes her eyes and leans in to kiss his sternum. She hums and drags her lips to one of his nipples, gently pulling it between her damp lips.
Dean groans, smoothing a hand down the back of her long, wavy tresses before briefly pulling away.
“Just—” he sighs and closes his eyes from her wide, bright gaze to compose himself. “Believe me when I say that one little slip of the tongue ain’t enough to ruin a great weekend with one of the most gorgeous, delightful women I’ve ever been with in my life.”
Vanessa tosses her head back and laughs.
“Seriously,” Dean continues as Vanessa pushes him back to sit on the bed, giggling the whole way.
“You smell good, you’re beautiful.” As he lists off the things he likes about her, Vanessa climbs astride his lap. “You laugh at my terrible jokes. Your voice alone is enough to give me wood, I’m not even kidding.”
“Dean.”
“Yeah?”
She wiggles a little, making him whimper and grip her hips, and drapes her arm over his shoulders to finger the velvety nape of his neck.
“Thank you. I like being with you, too.”
He smiles, and she pitches forward to kiss him.
“Then why don’t you tell me about everything I missed,” he mutters around her lips.
“When?” she breathes into his mouth.
“When I wasn’t with you, and you couldn’t get off without me.” Dean holds her close as he moves back to the mountain of fluffed-up hotel pillows.
“Mmm... Which time?” She steadies herself as he gets situated, watching his skin ripple over muscle.
“Start at the beginning.” He settles in, giving her his full attention, his hands sliding up her thighs to shroud her hips. “What made you realize thinking about me— about us together’d do the trick?”
Vanessa bites her lip, her cheeks flush dark pink, and her eyelids flutter.
Dean chuckles, reaching up to pull the front of her strapless bodysuit down, freeing her breasts. “Did you think about how I held you up and drilled you ‘til you soaked the bed of that swank hotel?”
“Jesus.” Vanessa grinds over him, leaning backward on her hands, and arching her spine. “Yes...”
He cups and squeezes one breast, then hooks three fingers around the front of the thong bottom of the body suit to knuckle at her opening.
“Did you think about me for seven days after?”
Vanessa nods, blindly grinding against his hand. “At first, it was your voice— it was when I was alone. I tried to remember... the way it rumbles your chest when you call me kitten.”
“Uh-huh.” Dean does his best to keep his voice warm and deep. “You’re so slick and hot right now, kitten. I’m here now.”
Vanessa lurches up and forward to brace her palms against his chest. “Keep talking.”
“You look so pretty, grindin’ against my fist. All open and juicy, so sexy. You gonna get yourself off like this?”
“God, Dean.” Vanessa grips his wrist and ruts against his knuckles hard, digging her blunt fingernails into his chest.
Dean hisses and whispers. “Do it, and I’ll fuck you just like you want. ”
“Oh, fuck!” She comes, shaking and panting, then collapses over him.
Dean slowly removes his hand from between her legs and wraps his arms around her while she catches her breath.
After a few moments, she speaks. “Then I was with this guy.”
“Hmm. Did he make you come?” Dean rolls her to her back.
“You know he didn’t. I told you that.”
“Did you?” He peels the bodysuit the rest of the way off her before throwing it across the room.
“On the phone. That’s why we’re having this conversation, I assume.”
“Ahh, yeah, you did.”
He shoves his boxers over his hips and flings them to join their other clothes — away from their bodies and the bed — before climbing between her legs and stretching out over her. He props himself up with his forearms and brushes her hair away from her face with his hands.
“What else, then?”
She raises her knees at his sides and drags her fingertips up his spine.
“After a couple more guys, same results, I gave up. My toys and memories are better than anyone who isn’t you.”
Dean makes a sound like pity cut with need as he grinds and bucks until his dick is snug and wet between her pussy lips. Then he drops his forehead to hers.
“Tell me exactly what makes you come when I’m not there.”
Vanessa closes her eyes and shudders when he slowly forges ahead. She hooks her hands over the backs of his shoulders with a gasp.
“I’ll never forget the utility closet,” she whispers. “The way everyone outside knew exactly what you’d done to me. I can’t stop thinking about if someone had seen us— if we’d been less careful.”
Dean moans as he slides all the way inside her, tucking his face in the crux of her neck. “You an exhibitionist, kitten?”
She shakes her head. “You’re just so sexy and so good at everything. I bet we’re hotter than any movie.”
Dean buries himself deep and settles in. He doesn’t lie to her, never has, and probably never will, but her willingness to be so fucking vulnerable with him makes his heart skip.
“You wanna watch us in the mirror? Just you and me over there?” Dean nods toward the vanity.
Vanessa peers across the room, then looks back at him and nods. “Yeah, later. Right now, I like you right where you are.”

Jungkook’s Fat-Filled Fad Feast
Jungkook reads in a health nut news magazine that high fat foods are good for you and helps control cholesterol. JK, who eats a ton of red meat and eggs because he’s a gym nut, latches onto the idea.
Soon he’s adding multiple avocados to his everyday diet. Some in smoothies, some in breakfast bowls, some as guacamole in burritos, etc. An extra 300 calories per large fruit, with him packing down 2-3 of the things a day.
He also heard that adding a tablespoon of olive oil a day is healthy, another 120 calories.
He snacks on an ounce of macadamia nuts between work outs, adding another 200 calories to his daily intake.
One cup of Greek yogurt in his morning shake, and a cup of the frozen variety for desert in the evening rack up an extra 440 calories.
Of course he had to have his healthy cheat foods, such as creamy cheeses and dark chocolate. An ounce of aged parmesan here (110 calories) a bar of sugar free, 70% dark chocolate there (170 calories).
Over all, he added a near additional 1,800 calories to his everyday diet, which already consisted of 3,500 calories per day on average.
The cherry on top? The same magazine that told him to consume more fat, also recommended less cardio as it puts more pressure on one’s joints in the long term.
Slowly, but steadily, his new routine catches up to him as he changes in size. His washboard abs melting into delicious subcutaneous fat, his once perky rear bloating into a wobbly, soft bubble butt.
His perfect pecks joined the rest of him in their expansion, becoming inflated pouches of fat. Nipples peeking up and poking through every shirt he owns.
His college classmates and hyungs Namjoon and Hoseok watched in confusion as their once fit friend changes into a new man over the course of the semester.
Even his football coach notices, changing his role to being a lineman, a position that requires less running around.
Jungkook, oblivious to his weight gain, and delighted by his new “healthy” lifestyle choices, starts recommending his diet to others. Including his fellow health nut classmates Namjoon and Hoseok.
Namjoon initially questions the diet’s choices, but after reviewing the science explanation in the magazine gave in and was hooked. Hoseok on the other hand has always been open to fad diets and techniques, drifting between things like keto, vegan and celiac for years prior. He didn’t even need to read the magazine to start adding avocados and Greek yogurt to his shopping list.
Even after all of that, all of the extra fats, the additional calories, his snowballing weight needed more. And well, since he’s been eating so well recently, why not have a true cheat day? Or two… or three…
Soon enough, every other day becomes a cheat day. Even inviting his now chubby Hyungs over for pizza and ice cream and fried chicken…
A full school year has gone by at this point, and there are now three permanent dips in Jungkook’s couch seats. You see, it was cheaper for Jungkook to cater to his new, more expensive diet when he had roommates…
Those roommates being the newly inflated Hoseok and Namjoon.
Both boys were squarely in the chubby category, plump and out of shape. Jungkook at this point however was bordering on being solidly fat.
The three of them spend a lot of their time on the couch binge watching old TV shows and movies, chowing down on both healthy and unhealthy fatty foods. Adding more and more calories to their daily intake as their self-control lessened by the day.
Their waistlines grew wider and their shirt tags became XXXL’s. The dips in the couch grew wider and squeakier until one day under their combined weight of 1,120 pounds the three seater gave up the ghost and collapsed.
A jostled Namjoon blinks as he looks down at his now 350 pound body, gently lifting and dropping his no longer new beer belly. Watching the mass wobble, he realized just how far gone he was. Just how heavy he’d grown, how uncomfortably large his gut was.
Shrugging, he grabbed another handful of fries. He was already so big, a little more wouldn’t hurt…
The arguably healthiest minded of the three, Hoseok also took a moment to look over his own flabby belly and wide thighs before blushing heavily and attempting to stand. Unfortunately from the current lowered state of the couch, he had quite of bit of trouble, attempting and failing to stand upright only made his heavy body bounce and jiggle. He blushed harder, panting and wiggling. What had they done?!
Jungkook didn’t even notice the couch breaking, too busy stuffing his fat face full of fried chicken, a leg in each hand as he barely took time to swallow before moving on to his next bite. He wouldn’t realize what happened until he cleared his bucket, licking the grease off his pudgy fingertips and noticing his lowered point of view.
They broke the couch?!
Huh, their bulking must be working then.
Onto dessert…

Binge 2
For a restaurant popular amongst college students, Las Alas offered food of good quality and generous portions. There was a large patio area, used in summer as a dance floor and an outdoor bar. The restaurant was busy, if not as packed as it could have been, and Peter and Derek were able to secure a restaurant in a shaded corner that made it feel a little more private. They had a their number on the table, chips, guac, and a pitcher of beer.
“Do you think we needed the chips?” Asked Derek, taking one despite himself. “We’re about to eat a five pound burrito.”
Peter shrugged. “I like chips and guac.” He dipped a chip and put it in his mouth. “Hmmm…Did they change the recipe?” He ran another chip generously through the guac and, leaning over, held it up to Derek’s mouth. “Try this.” Derek opened his mouth and Peter pushed the chip in his mouth, although there was too much guacamole on the chip and he got a good bit of it on Derek’s mouth. Derek, chewing what he had been offered, instantly felt Peter grab his mouth and rub the guac off. “In we go,” he said as he shoved his guac covered thumb into Derek’s mouth. Derek’s felt a flutter in his body, but as he looked at Peter, his friend just stared at him and asked, “This is different, isn’t it?”
“I think it’s the same…” said Derek, who had barely noticed the flavor of the guacamole, but suspected that he would not have noticed the difference.
“Okay, gentleman, welcome to our five pound burrito challenge. Have you done this before?” Asked the waitress placing two plates and a timer on the table.
“We both have,” answered Peter, flashing his most charming smile at the waitress.
“And you remember the rules?”
“If we eat it all in 45 minutes, the burrito is free?”
“Exactly that.”
“We have our work cut out for us,” said Peter. “Last time,” he explained to here, “Derek finished more it than I could. But I think I’ll win this time.”
“You didn’t even come close,” Derek said, feeling his competitive side kick in.
“We have a little side bet, whoever eats more has their meal paid for.”
Derek took a deep breath: bring it on, bro, he thought in his head. He was surprised how nice it felt to getting geared up for something. Maybe Peter had known this would be just the thing for him. He saw that Peter was grinning widely at him, and he regretted having almost cut him off.
“Can I get you anything else?” Asked the waitress. The boys shook their head.“Ready?” She set the timer for 45 minutes, quickly, and without much interest,  knowing that most would not make the finish line.
Peter and Derek got out their silverware and did not even exchange looks as they dived into the burrito once the waitress said, “Go!” Derek ate quickly, devouring the meaty monstrosity as fast as he could, chewing minimally as possible. He occasionally looked over at Peter, who was eating quickly but in much smaller bites.
At around 15 minutes, Peter was slowing down. “Dude, I think I gotta take a minute. That was a lot all at once.” He had eaten less than Derek and, per his estimate, about the amount of larger but usual burrito.
“This is gonna be the easiest free meal,” replied Derek. Although, as he said it, it occurred to him that he was getting ahead of himself. He, too, felt the weight of the burrito. His stomach felt full and was starting to reach its limits. But he kept moving at a steady pace. At his estimate, he figured he would probably also be stopping around 20 minutes.
When 20 minutes came, a surge of pride came on him, and he made a point of taking an especially large bite. As he swallowed, he felt the first sense of real discomfort in his stomach, having clearly hit a point his stomach could not easily adjust for. His eyes bugged out for a second, and Peter, who was “resting” to try and get over the “wall,” laughed. “You’re killin’ it champ. Don’t stop.”
Derek took a few more bites and suddenly felt another searing pain; it was intense, almost like experiencing a tear, and made him jerk up in his chair; he was about to cry out but almost instantaneously, as he chewed, a strange sensation came over him. He had never felt anything like it. It was a relaxing sensation, a sort of ease in his body, that enveloped him. Somehow, even though he was very aware that the pain was very much there, this heady trance allowed him to ignore it. He then noticed that all was really aware of was rhythm of his chewing and the shoveling of food into his mouth. In fact, they had become rather rhythmic themselves. Push in, chew, swallow. Push in, chew, swallow. Push in, chew swallow.
I’m so full, he thought a minute or so later, as he ate some chicken drowned in salsa roja. Without perturbing his rythm, he looked down at his stomach, which was clearly distended, bowing out and taut; Shocked on level, he thought to himself : I should stop, I need to rest. But he could not quite tear himself away from that strange Zen feeling that came out of filling his mouth and chewing.
As he continued eating, he could swear he felt another horrible pang come from his overextended stomach. But unlike the first one, he scarcely registered it. It felt tiny, like the pinch of a small vaccine, even smaller than the jab he had earlier that day. And it was happening all over his stomach.
“Get it, Derek!” He heard Peter cheer in the background. His friend sounded distant, but also not; his voice sounded like someone sitting next to him. But Derek didn’t need the encouragement he could not bring himself to stop.
Derek bit into a jalapeño; he coughed strangely (or, quite simply, he was unable to pull in his stomach), and to alleviate the spice, he grabbed his beer and took what he meant to be a quick swig.
He was suddenly very aware of the cool feeling of the liquid running down his throat, and in the same way his attention had been fixated on the steady rhythm of shoveling, chewing and swallowing, he could only concentrate on the liquid moving steadily down his throat, further drowning out the pain of his stomach. Each glug registered gently inside his awareness, helping to drown out the stomach pain that each gulp was simultaneously exacerbating.  Within a minute, he had downed the whole pint glass, and did not even notice that Peter pushed his full pint over, took Derek’s glass, and refilled it.
As he drank, he noticed more and more pangs from his stomach, until suddenly, he was sure it must have turned into a constant pain. He looked down once and was shocked to see the small beach ball his stomach had turned into, pushing out and tight, and blood red from physical stress.
“I’m so full,” he muttered, suddenly.
“Keep going, guy, you’re almost there.”
Derek looked down and saw that he had almost finished the burrito. As he debated finished, he felt a sudden pain and started eating again, not wanting to break his distracting focus, vaguely aware that, at this point, he could not just stop.
Within just a few minutes, he had finished the burrito and was scraping his plate. Finding only sauce, he remembered his beer and downed it, and then, still in need of relief, downed the second one Peter had filled. He wanted to stay in his trance and also not reckon with the pain its end would bring. He could feel his stomach jutting out and swear that he could feel it creeping onto his lap.
In the time it took him finish the second beer, Peter had slipped his own burrito under Derek. Derek was almost giddy to put down his silverware and find more food. To have to break his concentration would be intolerable. Somewhere in his mind, he was screaming, “What the fuck is going on?!” But with every bite his mind and body realized it had to stay in the trance it was in, because every bite was contributing to the pain in his stomach.
He could not find the words to express how he made such quick work of the second burrito. It vanished in a fraction of the time of the first. He was conscious only of the mechanic rhythm of his eating. He also settled into the warm, enveloping feeding it brought him and with each passing moment was drawn further and further in to it.
He felt his fork hit hard plate, and Peter said, “Dude you finished both of them with five minutes to spare!” Despairingly, but confused, Derek looked down at his stomach, which resembled a cartoon, bowing out on the sides and round as an exercise ball, his shirt riding up almost to his chest, revealing a inny belly button that had effectively become an outtie.
Derek looked pleadingly at Peter, who was smiling. Afraid to stop, he grabbed a handful of chips and jammed them in his mouth.
“Hey, you’re missing the best part,” Peter said, and he took his spoon and pushed a huge scoop towards Derek’s mouth. Derek could not help but the offering in, his gut screaming to be no further filled, his mind unable to acquiesce. However, in the wake of this offering, he felt a pang from his stomach that seemed to signal that even this strange state of consciousness, the pain was going to break through if he continued. This has to stop, thought Derek. He placed his hand on his distended stomach. But I can’t stop.
Peter had refilled both beer glasses as Derek had been eating, and with the totality of his willpower, Derek picked up the beer and rather than chugging it, sipped as slowly as he could; it was just enough to sustain his the strange trance while letting his stomach process whatever had just happened to it.
“I need to….*BURP*… just…oh god….sit a minute.” The pangs were stronger now but Derek felt that sipping the beer was helping. “What’s happening to me?"
Peter sat, just smiling at his friend.  “That was fucking amazing! Peter poked Derek “You look nine months pregnant!”
Derek moaned, unable to even clear his thoughts to respond. He did not even notice the inch or so his stomach suddenly jutted out, making room for the food he had so dutifully eaten.

Dr. Pepper
I sort of like soda. If it’s in front of me I’ll drink it but mostly I just have water. I sort of like 7 Up more than I like any other soda in the same way that I sort of like red M&Ms more than any other color. Here’s the thing: nobody “sort of” likes Dr. Pepper. Its strong flavor cleanly Donnie Darko divides the world into lovers and haters. You are either a die-hard Dr. Pepper fan or you can’t stand the taste.
On my first full day on a vacation to Texas, I was explaining this school of thought as we bought groceries for the rest of my stay. As I elaborated, my host stopped dead in his tracks, looked me in the eyes, and said, “Well, you’ve never had to drink nothing but Dr. Pepper for 12 days straight.” I could sense this trauma had not yet healed so I didn’t ask what he meant.
In this silence, he leaned over to the shelf beside him and, with the biggest smile I have ever seen him have, he pulled out two massive three liter bottles of Diet Dr. Pepper. I had never seen a three liter bottle of anything before. He noticed my shock and held them up to a two liter bottle on the shelves. “You don’t have this kind of thing up north.” He was right. With a slight flourish he dumped them into our shopping cart. You don’t make room for that kind of thing in your cart. Everything else makes room for it.
The gears in my head fell into place. Thoughts with this amount of torque change a person. I asked my host to mentor me in the ways of Dr. Pepper; I too wanted to drink nothing but Dr. Pepper for days on end. With childish optimism, I thought that maybe, just maybe, I could cross the infinite divide between hate and love. My host accepted my request. In his wisdom, he picked out a 12 pack of Dr. Pepper & Cream Soda Zero Sugar cans.
On the first night, I was still jet lagged and turned down every suggestion of night time activities. I didn’t want to roast marshmallows or play board games or watch a movie. With our options exhausted, my mentor at last suggested, “Well do you at least want some Dr. Pepper?” I did.
I had to literally roll the bottle out from the back of the fridge because the three liter monstrosity could not fit in even the fanciest of Texas sized fridges. Then, I poured myself a glass and retired to my quarters. I lay awake as a terrible stomach pain overwhelmed me.
I consulted an online network of supplementary Dr. Pepper mentors to see if this could be a symptom of my transition to Pepperhood. One scholar replied, “Let the doctor work.” I downed the rest of my glass and fell asleep. When I woke up, I at once understood the advice.
The previous day, in my hubris, I had eaten a downright vile volume of queso for lunch, despite my lactose intolerance. As previously described, I sort of like soda and will drink it if it’s set out in front of me. Well, I really like queso. Imagine the visceral things I do when something I like is set out in front of me.
My friends unknowingly organized my funeral when they ordered, without my input, a heaping bowl of queso topped with chorizo, pico de gallo, and guacamole. A cheese induced brain fog had obscured this memory and convinced me that Dr. Pepper could be at fault. I would not blame her again.
As many non-American home remedies claim, a good swig of toxic US soda will counteract the toxins of sickness and flood them out. Well, buddy, Dr. Pepper has 23 flavors to besiege the comparative 1 of lactose. Throughout my entire second day, my body ejected an uncountably infinite mass of cheesy hell. Up against the overindulgent Texas queso, Dr. Pepper’s toxins waged the American Civil War inside my stomach, in a thrilling prequel to the inevitable police state of Osmosis Jones.
On the third day, I was cured. That night when we went out for dinner, in the name of stomach Reconstruction, I ordered, “Just water.” I now have philosophical proof that God exists because my water came in a crimson frosted plastic cup bearing the Dr. Pepper logo. The water tasted sweet. When we got home, I celebrated with a can of the cream flavored Dr. Pepper. I liked it a lot more than the Diet Dr. Pepper variant. At that exact moment, I was hooked on Pepper fever.
On the fourth day, I suffered a painful hunger because, to put it bluntly, all the food around the house sucked. I didn’t want to eat. Yet, Dr. Pepper provided. As a non-soda drinker, I shockingly learned that a simple can could fill you up. I leveraged this ability for the remainder of my trip. Dr. Pepper blessed me with a new experience of life; for the first time outside of a buffet, I felt full when eating dinner. On the fifth day, I understood how to use Dr. Pepper’s caffeine to fix my sleep. On the sixth day, I became at peace with its flavor. And so it was that on my seventh and final full day in Texas, I rested. And it was good.
On my trip back to New York, I felt a familiar stomach pain while boarding my airplane. I had eaten two cheesy tacos from “Buc-ees” for breakfast. Despite the relatively small amount of cheese in those tacos compared to the queso one week earlier, the poor quality of the food amplified its severity. Though “Buc-ees” sold merchandise of its mascot, was several times larger than my local grocery store, and was generally hostile to poor people, it was still a gas station with gas station food. My position as a polite prisoner in a plane with 100 other people only made the situation worse. I knew what I had to do.
I asked the flight attendant for Dr. Pepper. It calmed me long enough for my stomach to process the food. At last, I entered the airplane bathroom and blasted the last remains of Texas out of my body. I know with spiritual clarity that I flushed that toilet at the exact moment the plane crossed the Mason-Dixon line. The war was over. The boys, now men, were coming home.
I love Dr. Pepper.
Dr. Pepper is a warrior, a friend, and to be completely honest, tastes kinda bad.

Hurricane Fiona blew avocados off trees in Puerto Rico : NPR
Tumblr media
Magaly Vázquez and Pedro Lugo, with the avocados and bananas that friends have given them after Hurricane Fiona knocked much of the island's fruit off trees.
LAJAS, Puerto Rico — There's an old superstition in Puerto Rico that when the avocado trees are especially full of fruit, there's a hurricane coming.
This summer, the avocado trees had been bursting with fruit, so speculation had been flying for weeks. A storm was on the way.
Tumblr media
At a donation drive in San Juan, people who brought supplies for hard-hit communities got two avocados as a token of gratitude. Adrian Florido/NPR hide caption
Now, in the days since the storm, people have been scrambling to eat them all – and just as importantly – to give them away, before they rot.
"We have to take good care of them," said Jonathan Velez Rosado.
In the capital, San Juan, he was helping run a donation drive collecting water, food and toiletries for affected communities. His volunteers were offering people who brought donations a token gratitude: two avocados apiece, pulled out of a sack filled with them.
Tumblr media
Puerto Ricans are racing to eat all of the avocados that Hurricane Fiona blew off of trees before they go bad.
Adrian Florido/NPR
Puerto Ricans have been eating avocado for breakfast, lunch and dinner. With rice and beans, gazpacho, and on toast.
"At work today my colleagues gave me three bags!" said Pedro Lugo, who lives in the town of Lajas, on the island's southwest coast. "I said, 'What am I going to do with all of these? I can't eat guacamole everyday!' "
He started giving them away, including to an NPR reporter.
When Fiona's winds picked up, Lugo began to worry about his neighbor's avocado tree. He went into the bathroom and watched for hours through a small window.
"It started dancing from side to side," he said.
By the time the winds had passed, only a single avocado had survived.
"In a couple of weeks, that avocado is going to cost more than $100, because it's the only one left," he said, laughing.
His neighbor, Willy Torres Martinez, felt his heart sink when he looked out and saw more than a hundred avocados littering his back yard. But he soon started packing them into plastic bags and delivering them to his neighbors.
"I like to share," he said. "Because when you share, it comes back to you twofold."
The avocados have become the link for connecting with his neighbors in the days since the storm. After a tragedy, he said, that's the most important thing.

Please excuse the windowsill— my apartment is old and crappy, but look at this cup!!!!!
I bought this cup from the 99¢ store, it came in a pack of 4. They're great for keeping you on track with your water goals, it holds about 20oz of water. It's just incredibly cute too!!
My best tip; use cute cups, plates, cutlery, etc to eat with. It gives you a seratonin boost and makes you feel good about the food you're eating.
I'm thinking of picking up some kids plates because they're cute, but also because they're smaller. I eat most my meals off this full sized hello kitty plate I bought at world market years ago

Breakfast Burritos
If you’ve ever been to Chubby’s on the morning of a Denver Broncos recreation, then you’ve seen true chaos reign. But the hectic atmosphere at this Mile High institution is part of its allure. Chubby's doesn’t overdo it with the chile, so fluffy eggs are by no means swimming, however it nonetheless has a well-known kick that will rouse any bleary-eyed wanderer. Place the burrito seam-side down in a dry frying pan, and cook dinner for a few minutes over a medium warmth, till the underside is golden brown and crispy. Turn the burrito and repeat on the other side.
Beat together eggs and season season with salt and pepper. Instant Pot Breakfast Burritos in Santa Clarita are cooked utilizing the Pot-in-Pot methodology. That means using a cake pan or different oven protected pan that sits on a trivet throughout the internal stainless pot of the strain cooker to prepare dinner the eggs in. The water that creates the steam wanted for constructing stress is within the stainless liner pot, underneath the cooking pan. This could be part of the answer.
Add diced bell and jalapeño peppers and onion to pan and sauté till tender. Remove from pan and transer to a large bowl. If you come at the king, you better not miss. Araujo’s makes no bones about its battle with Santiago’s. Like Santiago’s, Araujo’s rotates the meat inside its handheld breakfast burritos every day. It even undercuts the Santiago’s value by 50 cents -- an Araujo’s green chile-infused eye-opener will set you again a total of two bucks.
I precook breakfast sausage and add the sausage and grated cheese on to the eggs while scrambling. Then I freeze in layers divided by a chunk f parchment and take out the night earlier than to thaw in the fridge. My children microwave them when able to eat. They are particularly yummy with a smear of guacamole.
Sometimes it’s good to have alone time. I love cozying up at a coffee store or testing recipes while listening to the Dixie Chicks as loud as potential. However, what makes our job superb is the chemistry we now have on Team Fit Foodie. All recipe testing and day-to-day actions together are 100 percent higher when Lee, Emily, and I are all together! For instance, these breakfast burritos. Night earlier than use, place burritos in refrigerator to thaw.
Alternaively, bake in foil at 350F until warmed through, about 15 minutes. Healthy breakfast burritos full of candy potatoes, black beans, eggs and avocado. You're going to like this protein-packed breakfast that's freezer-friendly and great for meal prep.

Why Superfoods Are Taking Over Your Skincare Routine
Tumblr media
Imagine a world where your beauty products aren't just packed with science-backed chemicals and mysterious compounds, but instead infused with the vibrant energy of nature's most potent ingredients. That's the realm of superfood skincare, and it's rapidly transforming the way we approach beauty.
Tumblr media
Have you ever wondered why you put so much thought into a nutrient-dense diet, but perhaps don't give your skincare the same level of scrutiny? After all, your skin is your largest organ, and it deserves the very best nourishment. This growing trend is about more than just a fancy label; superfood skincare offers a holistic inside-out approach to radiance. Let's delve into the fascinating world where food and beauty intersect.
What Exactly Are Superfoods?
While there's no single scientific definition, "superfood" generally refers to whole foods boasting a remarkable concentration of nutrients like vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. From the humble blueberry to the exotic goji berry, these powerhouses deliver a potent dose of goodness. While eating your superfoods is fantastic, harnessing their powers topically opens a whole new avenue for achieving a healthy glow. The Allure of Superfood Skincare Think of superfoods as your skin's personal cheerleaders! They're packed full of everything your skin needs to look and feel its best. Let's break down why they're so awesome: - Vitamin Superstars: Superfoods burst with vitamins A, C, and E. These are like little shields for your skin – they protect against damage and boost collagen, the stuff that keeps your skin looking plump and bouncy. - Say Goodbye to Inflammation: Many superfoods are anti-inflammatory powerhouses. If you're dealing with redness, irritation, or even conditions like eczema, superfoods can help calm things down and give your skin some relief. - Gentle Giants: Harsh chemicals in some skincare can wreak havoc on your skin. Superfoods are different – they work with your skin's natural processes, not against them. This means you get the good stuff without the irritation. - Superfoods, Super Earth: A lot of superfood skincare brands care just as much about the planet as they do your skin. They use clean ingredients and support fair practices – choosing these products makes you and the Earth feel good. Fun Superfood Facts! - Orange you glad you ate those carrots? They're amazing sources of vitamin A, which helps keep your skin smooth and clear. - Blueberries = tiny anti-aging bombs. They're chock-full of antioxidants that protect against the wrinkles we all dread. Spotlight on Superfood Skincare Stars Let's meet some of the superheroes transforming your skincare routine: - Acai Berry: This Amazonian gem is a star in the antioxidant department, shielding your skin against environmental aggressors, reducing inflammation, and promoting a supple complexion.
Tumblr media
- Kale: Don't just eat it - kale's supercharged cocktail of vitamins C, E, and K revitalizes dull skin, strengthens its barrier function, and may even help minimize dark spots.
Tumblr media
- Avocado: This creamy fruit isn't just for guacamole; its healthy fats and vitamins deeply moisturize and nourish your skin, making it a godsend for dry and dehydrated complexions.
Tumblr media
- Turmeric: This golden spice has potent anti-inflammatory and brightening properties. It combats acne, soothes irritation, and can even help diminish the appearance of hyperpigmentation.
Tumblr media
- Green Tea: Loaded with antioxidants, green tea fights against free radicals, protects against sun damage, and may even minimize signs of premature aging. How to Incorporate Superfoods into Your Routine The cool thing about superfoods is that you can work them into your skincare routine in lots of different ways. Whether you like to keep it simple or have a whole multi-step process, there's a superfood solution for you! Ways to get your superfood skincare fix: - Fresh Start: Swap out your regular face wash for a gentle cleanser that has superfood goodies in it. You'll cleanse your skin and give it a little nutrient boost at the same time. - The Super Shot: Serums are like a little potion for your skin. Choose one with superfood ingredients that targets whatever you're wanting to improve – dullness, dark spots, dryness, you name it! - Mask Attack: Think of a superfood face mask as a once-a-week treat for your skin. It's like a supercharged spa moment that leaves you feeling refreshed and glowy. - Seal the Deal: Using a moisturizer with superfood ingredients helps lock in all that good stuff. Look for ones that also have hydrating helpers in them for extra skin love. - DIY Time: Get creative and whip up your own skincare treats! There are tons of recipes online using yogurt, honey, avocado...things you probably already have in your kitchen. Combine it with proven actives for optimal results. - Consult a Dermatologist: If you have a chronic skin condition, consult a dermatologist before integrating superfood skincare into your regimen. I have some calls this morning, and then am getting a massage… can’t.wait. For today’s post, I wanted to share some of my favorite healthy finds from Trader Joe’s! During the time-that-shall-not-be-named, the Pilot did all of our grocery shopping because he was “out in the world” and the girls and I were at home. 8 Superfoods
Looking for some simple steps to incorporate superfoods into your daily routine?  Join me on this healthy journey right now.
Hello, my fellow food explorers! Are you ready to give your daily diet a super boost? Today, we're going to discover eight simple and delicious ways to weave some of nature's finest superfoods into your everyday routine. Let's get started and turn ordinary meals into extraordinary nourishment!
First up, let's talk berries. Whether it's blueberries, strawberries, or raspberries, these little jewels are antioxidant powerhouses. Here's a morning hack for you: top your cereal or yogurt with a generous handful of berries for a sweet and nutritious start to your day.
Speaking of yogurt, let's move on to our second superfood,....Greek yogurt. This creamy delight is packed with protein and probiotics. For a quick snack, why not create a yogurt parfait? Layer Greek yogurt with nuts, honey, and yes, more berries for a gut-friendly treat.
Nuts about nuts? You should be! Almonds, walnuts, and pecans are full of healthy fats and fiber. Here's a tip: keep a small bag of mixed nuts in your bag or desk drawer. They're the perfect pick-me-up when that mid-afternoon hunger strikes.
Whole grains are next on our super list. Quinoa, brown rice, and oats are versatile and full of fiber. For an easy lunch, how about a quinoa salad? Just toss cooked quinoa with your favorite veggies, a drizzle of olive oil, and a squeeze of lemon juice. Simple and satisfying!
Ah, avocados. Creamy and loaded with heart-healthy fats. They're not just for guacamole, folks. Slice an avocado onto toast, sprinkle with salt and pepper, and boom—a breakfast that's both decadent and good for you.
Sweet potatoes are up next. These tubers are a fantastic source of vitamins A and C. My go-to? Cut them into wedges, toss with a bit of olive oil and your favorite spices, and roast or air-fry until crispy. A delicious side dish or snack!
Olive oil, is the liquid gold of superfoods. It's great for heart health and full of antioxidants. Drizzle it over salads, use it as a base for dressings, or simply dip your bread in it. It's an easy swap for butter and adds a rich flavor to your dishes.
Last but not least, legumes! Lentils, chickpeas, and beans are all fiber-filled and protein-packed. Add them to soups, stews, or salads for an extra nutrient kick. Or, mash them up for a quick and hearty spread on sandwiches or crackers.
And there you have it—eight super simple ways to sneak these superfoods into your daily diet. Remember, eating well doesn't have to be complicated. With these tips, you can easily add a burst of nutrition and flavor to every meal.

In this article, we'll explore 10 delicious and low-calorie options that will not only satisfy your cravings but also keep you on track with your weight loss goals. The Importance of Healthy Snacking Snacking often gets a bad rap, but it can be a valuable part of a balanced diet. When done right, snacking can help curb hunger, maintain energy levels, and prevent overeating during main meals. However, it all boils down to the choices you make. Let's dive into some fantastic low-calorie snack options that will make your weight loss journey enjoyable.
1. Crunchy Delights
Cucumber Slices with Hummus Crunchy and refreshing, cucumber slices are an excellent choice for snacking. Pair them with a creamy and protein-rich dip like hummus, and you have a satisfying treat that won't derail your diet. Cucumbers are low in calories and high in water content, helping you stay hydrated while snacking. Air-Popped Popcorn Popcorn doesn't have to be a guilty pleasure. Greek Yogurt with Berries Greek yogurt is a protein powerhouse, and when combined with fresh berries, it becomes a sweet and creamy delight. Berries add natural sweetness and a dose of antioxidants, making this snack both nutritious and satisfying. Dark Chocolate Almonds Craving something sweet and chocolaty? Hard-Boiled Eggs Eggs are a fantastic source of protein and can keep you feeling full for hours. Hard-boiled eggs are portable and easy to prepare in advance. Sprinkle a pinch of salt and pepper for extra flavor. Turkey Jerky If you're looking for a savory and protein-packed snack, turkey jerky is an excellent choice. Infuse your water with slices of citrus fruits, cucumber, or mint for a refreshing twist without added calories. Herbal Tea Sometimes, a warm beverage can be just as satisfying as a snack. Herbal teas come in various flavors and can help curb cravings while providing a soothing experience.
8. Portion Control Tips
Mindful Eating Regardless of what you choose to snack on, practicing mindful eating is essential. Pay attention to your body's hunger cues and savor each bite. Eating slowly can help you feel satisfied with smaller portions. Snacking on a Schedule Establish a snacking schedule to avoid impulsive choices. Knowing when your next snack is can help you resist the temptation of unhealthy options.
9. Stay Prepared
Meal Prep Ideas Preparation is key to successful snacking. Spend some time each week preparing snack-sized portions of your favorite healthy options. This will make it easy to grab a nutritious snack when hunger strikes. Healthy Snack Kits Consider creating "snack kits" with a variety of your favorite low-calorie snacks. Having these kits readily available makes it convenient to make smart choices. A balanced approach to snacking is crucial for anyone on a weight-watching journey. By incorporating these 10 low-calorie options into your daily routine, you can satisfy your cravings, stay on track with your weight loss goals, and enjoy a healthier lifestyle. Introducing healthy snacks into their diet is a great way to ensure they get the nutrition they need while satisfying their hunger and taste buds. Here are some healthy snacks to introduce to your child’s diet: Fruit Fruit is an excellent snack for kids because it’s sweet, delicious, and packed with vitamins and nutrients. Some great options include bananas, apples, oranges, and berries. You can serve fruit alone or pair it with a healthy dip like yogurt or nut butter. Vegetables Vegetables are another great snack option for kids. They are low calorie, high fiber, and can keep your child feeling full longer than sugary foods. Some good choices include carrots, cucumbers, celery, and cherry tomatoes. Hummus or guacamole are great dipping options. Nuts and Seeds Packed with protein and healthy fat, seeds, and nuts are essential for your child’s growth and development. Some good options include almonds, cashews, pumpkin seeds, and sunflower seeds. You can serve them individually or mix them with dried fruit for a healthy trail mix. Yogurt Yogurt is full of protein and calcium, essential for your child’s bones and muscles. Look for varieties low in sugar and high in protein, like Greek yogurt. Mix it with fruit and granola for a healthy parfait. Whole Grain Crackers Whole-grain crackers are a great snack. They are high in fiber and low-cal. Look for varieties made with whole grains, like wheat or quinoa.  Smoothies Smoothies are a great way to sneak extra fruits and vegetables into your child’s diet. You can make them with various ingredients like bananas, berries, spinach, and kale. Yogurt or nut butter provides extra protein and healthy fats. Popcorn Popcorn is a great snack option because it’s low in calories and fiber. Look for varieties that are low in salt and butter. You can also add in some nutritional yeast or herbs for extra flavor. Remember their likes and dislikes when introducing new snacks to your child’s diet. Don’t be discouraged if they don’t like something right away. It can take several tries before they start to enjoy a new food. Also, monitor portion sizes and avoid giving your child too many snacks throughout the day. Introducing healthy snacks into your child’s diet is a great way to ensure they get the nutrition they need while satisfying their hunger and taste buds.   via Dr. Lori Gore-Green | Women's Health Professional https://ift.tt/oyaVPUZ April 18, 2023 at 05:45PM

Fat Man Eateth: Go Grab Some Gringos Tacos
Tumblr media
The fat man (yours truly) and my girlfriend were out running errands a few weeks ago when the pangs of lunchtime hunger started rumbling from down in the deep. And when a pregnant woman says “I hunger” in a cute voice, time quickly becomes of the essence. Why? Because that polite declaration of needing to eat can quickly turn into hangry—and no one wants to see hangry. I remembered reading about a food truck serving tacos in the Wheeling area, originally along Washington Ave., but now with a spot out in Elm Grove. So we traveled to Elm Grove, to the location of a former Marathon Gas Station, across the street from Arby's. The lot that day at 2061 National Road? Empty. Was it closed? No, but it forced me to remember one key element—it's a food truck. Food trucks are mobile. The menu at Gringos Tacos is varied, whilst not too daunting. It does feature specials like the carnitas y pineapple salsa, BBQ pulled pork tacos, and sweet potato tacos. So I quickly hopped onto Facebook and visited the page of The Gringos Tacos to see where they were set up that day. Alas, we were in luck. Owner Josh Broverman was camped in the Lowe's parking lot in South Wheeling from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. So to South Wheeling we traveled, both hungry and excited as we made our way up and over I-470 to Lowes. I'd read and heard good things about these street tacos with a gourmet flare and it was finally time to try them ourselves. Gringos Tacos is set up in a little red towable food truck. The menu, while not large, is quite varied and offers something for everyone. It also is subject to change, featuring specials. I felt quite hungry and wanted some variety to gauge just how good these tacos were. I opted to get a Carnitas with Pineapple Salsa and also one of The Gentleman tacos. The gentleman consists of beef, cheddar, queso, guacamole, and pico de gallo. The nearing hangry GF wanted a little more standard with two beef tacos. We placed our order and, seeing as it was a chilly day, went back into the car to wait. Carnitas with pineapple salsa ... so good. The Gentleman, consisting of beef, queso, quac, and pico. The Verdict First off, the staff was incredibly friendly and patient as we took a moment as first timers, deciding what to order. The other folks in line clearly had been here before and knew what they wanted. The wait wasn't long for the food to be ready either. It was well packed so that it didn't lose an ounce of heat or freshness traveling back to the car. Now for the moment of truth. I've had carnitas on several occasions at Mexican and other restaurants around the Ohio Valley, so I opted to try The Gentleman taco first. I love mixing the cooling sensation and flavor of guac with the flavors of still hot beef of the taco. I was right, it didn't disappoint. The flavors meshed incredibly well together. More than pleasantly surprised, I then tried the carnitas with pineapple salsa. Again, not disappointed. The pork was so tender and had the right amount of flavor. As I look over, I see someone enjoying her second beef taco, and signaling her approval with a thumbs up and a mouth full of food. Gringos Tacos can be found in Elm Grove in the lot of the former Marathon station, across from Arby's ... or in other locations throughout the city when it's on the move. Check out the Facebook page to see others and location. More Info: Gringos' Facebook page holds a wealth of information and should be your first stop shop before ordering. It features numerous pictures of the various tacos served at Gringos. It also alerts customers if the truck locale will change from its home in Elm Grove. Gringos Tacos also does larger-scale catering events, and customers can also place orders ahead of time online by messaging the Facebook page via messenger. I look forward to returning and trying something with a bit more heat. The flavor is definitely on point. Now I'm looking forward to something with a little more spice. Read the full article
