Manifesting many characteristics of Skadi, the Norse giantess and goddess of the mountains who shares an origin with the Celtic warrior Scáthach. She has no interest in serving as a mentor to heroes and she also has no mastery of any martial arts but if one gets close enough to know her beyond her perfect Queen/Goddess self. One will find out that she's actually pretty ditzy, silly, and warmhearted. She is Scáthach-Skadi

The Ravages of Time episode 6
After so long, it's finally here! This was a lot of work for something that maybe two and a half people will read, but I had a lot of fun with it and am ridiculously proud of everything I've learned working on this.
Episode 6
Tumblr media
I say Lü Bu is not human
Lü Bu, courtesy name Fengxian, was a famous general of the late Eastern Han dynasty, a skilled horseback archer and a brave and experienced warrior.
Lü Bu was appointed a Registrar by the Bingzhou governor Ding Yuan [1], but later killed him and became Dong Zhuo’s sworn son [2], acting as the official in charge of the imperial palace security, then grew suspicious of Dong Zhuo, and killed him with the help of the Minister over the Masses Wang Yun [3]. He then tried to join Yuan Shu [4], but was refused, and instead turned to Yuan Shao [5], only to again be met with suspicion, and later joined Zhang Yang [6]. After that, Lü Bu and Cao Cao opposed each other for two years. Lü Bu was also occasionally allies, occasionally enemies with Liu Bei, creating the story of Lü Bu shooting the halberd [5].
On the third year of Liu Xie’s third reign (should be around 199 CE), after Lü Bu defeated Liu Bei and Xiahou Dun [6], Cao Cao personally went on a campaign against him. There was a rebellion in Lü Bu’s forces, and he was defeated and taken prisoner. Cao Cao had Lü Bu executed.
---
Readmore here because there are so many notes...
[1] Ding Yuan – a warlord who was summoned to Luoyang alongside with Dong Zhuo to assist in the power struggle against the eunuchs, but arrived slightly later. According to the Records of the Three Kingdoms, he was originally from a poor family and rose to power through his bravery and sense of responsibility. Just like Lü Bu, he was a skilled rider and archer.
[2] Sworn son – typically translated as “adopted son”. However, I wanted to dive a little deeper into the nature of their relationship – see this post on the matter.
[3] Wang Yun – a Han dynasty official and politician known mostly for his part in Dong Zhuo’s murder. That was the height (at the time he was the Minister over the Masses – one of the three highest posts in Han dynasty) and the end of his career – within a few months, he was assassinated by Dong Zhuo’s followers in Chang’an.
[4] Yuan Shu – a Han dynasty warlord with an admittedly long and curious biography that won’t all fit here – besides, he’ll be an active participant in the events I assume will make it into the donghua. For now, after Dong Zhuo fled Luoyang, Yuan Shu came into the possession of the Imperial Seal, given to him by his subordinate Sun Jian.
[5] Yuan Shao – another Han dynasty warlord and another active participant in the Late Han politics. He and Yuan Shu did not have a good relationship, partially due to the circumstances of Yuan Shao’s birth. Now this is where things get complicated. English Wikipedia will tell you that he was Yuan Shu’s half-brother, but that’s… not really known, and under the circumstances, I don’t think any certain claims can be made. Yuan Shao was the son of a servant, and later adopted by Yuan Shu’s uncle Yuan Cheng who had no heirs (he is referred as just Yuan Cheng’s “son”, and if you’ve read the “sworn sons” post, looks like it was one of those relationships that gave him the family name and the right to inherit). Either way, despite the shady circumstances of birth, his status was higher than that of Yuan Shu’s, which didn’t stop Yuan Shu from claiming Yuan Shao wasn’t a “true” Yuan when they had disputes. Family.
[6] Zhang Yang – this Han dynasty general didn’t die by Lü Bu’s hand, but he was murdered by a subordinate a few years later while trying to help Lü Bu in his struggle against Cao Cao. He was described as a brave warrior, but wasn’t as involved in court politics as Yuan Shu or Yuan Shao. From what I’ve read in his biography, it almost sounds like politics was happening to him and not the other way around – he was mostly kept out of real power by the people in charge, even when they recognized his talents and contributions.
[7] The story of Lü Bu shooting the halberd is a famous story from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Basically a feat of unmatched marksmanship, but more on that later.
In chapter 16 of the novel, Lü Bu gets caught between two opposing forces of Liu Bei and Ji Ling (Yuan Shu’s general). Ji Ling, who had helped Lü Bu previously, was threatening Liu Bei, and Liu Bei, despite the reservations of his allies, decided to turn to Lü Bu for help. Not wanting to directly oppose Ji Ling and yet also not wanting him to win and gain more strength, Lü Bu called the two of them to his camp to settle things. While Liu Bei was eager to reach a peaceful solution, Ji Ling was intent on fighting. Finally, Lü Bu asked for his halberd, had it set in the ground 150 paces away and made a deal with the two that if Lü Bu could shoot the small blade from a bow, they’d leave peacefully. Certain that the task was impossible, Ji Ling agreed, Lü Bu shot the halberd, and thus the matter was temporarily resolved.
Now, just to put things into perspective, 150 paces is… a lot. To the best of my knowledge, during Han dynasty that would have been around 200 meters (650 feet) (even more if we assume the early Ming dynasty measurements of the time of the writing, that would be about 240 meters (790 feet)). Just… that’s an insane distance for archery. In modern Olympic archery (with the fancy bows and equipment), the largest distance for a recurve bow is 70 meters (230 feet). In traditional archery competitions, I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything over 40 meters (130 feet), and the typical distance is 20 meters (65 feet).
I don’t have a conclusion for this, really. Although Lü Bu is typically depicted with a halberd, there’s a reason one of his main defining characteristics is that he was an excellent archer. Of course, this is a fictional tale, but it certainly goes to show how Lü Bu was perceived.
[8] Xiahou Dun – one of Cao Cao’s trusted generals, nicknamed “one-eyed Xiahou” after he lost his eye to a stray arrow some time in the late 190’s. In historical records he is described just as a loyal and humble warrior as well as thoughtful administrator who kept the needs of the common folk in mind. The Romance of the Three Kingdoms really leaned into the whole one-eyed general thing though, describing him yanking the arrow (shot by Lü Bu in this version) out and eating his eyeball.
And now onto episode spoilers!
The song Xiao Meng sings before Dong Zhuo is unfortunately a song written for the show, since Xu Lin is a fictional character, and isn’t an actual old poem. Not sure if Guanshan Road there refers to a specific road, I haven’t been able to find a name for anything period-appropriate, so it could have just been a generic reference to a path through a mountain pass.
The official subtitles are a bit unclear in the part of Dong Zhuo’s speech where the dragon appears, because the translation… doesn’t feature a dragon? It goes something like, “A ruler will be revered by thousands of people wherever he goes. The real ruler is in our hands right now!” The actual words are more like, “Wherever he goes, he will be a dragon revered by thousands of people. This true dragon is now in our hands.”
(Additionally, having finally got around to reading at least the very beginning of the manhua, I actually get why sleeping with Dong Zhuo is absolutely not an option for Xiao Meng. It’s completely omitted in the donghua, but in the manhua Xiao Meng is in fact a eunuch.)
Pretty sure the instructor of the Imperial Guards Yuan Tai is a fictional character.
I had the funniest reaction after reaching the scene of Xiao Meng refusing Dong Zhuo, because that was the first time I fully realized the fake name is Diao Chan. The legendary beauty Diao Chan. And then I went back and rewatched episode 2. And indeed, Xiao Meng is sent to Wang Yun, Minister over the Masses, and I completely missed it then, too busy agonizing over Lü Bu’s halberd and the timelines.
It hasn’t really come up in previous notes, because it’s a fictional story used in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, but there, part of the reason for the disagreements between Lü Bu and Dong Zhuo is a woman named Diao Chan (often stylized as Diaochan), Wang Yun’s daughter.
Actually, Diao Chan as Lü Bu’s wife appeared in previous stories, too, the depictions ranging from a woman completely unaware of the surrounding conspiracies to a femme fatale. But I think it was the Romance of the Three Kingdoms that established her connection to Wang Yun and sets Diao Chan as Dong Zhuo’s concubine that Lü Bu falls in love with.
Obviously that’s not what happens in The Ravages of Time, but that story was still clearly a source of inspiration. Though now I have to wonder, with Xiao Meng exposed, will Wang Yun’s involvement in the story change, or will they gloss over that part completely?..

SHIPPER TAG GAME
LET'S GOOOOO~ tagged by @negrowhat
Tumblr media
1. What ship were you completely obsessed with when you were a teenager, but now you don't care anymore?
Glorestor or Glorfindel / Erestor of Middle Earth Fanon Fame. Not that I don't CARE about it anymore, mind you. There's just not enough new content (for obvious reasons god it's old and there's like one conversation of original source material). I don't think about them as much anymore. Like I used to be reading fanfic EVERY NIGHT and we're talking like novel length fanfics (as you can imagine people in the LOTR fandom write lol). Anyway here's some super old fan art... (>u<)
Tumblr media
2. Which ship would you consider your first one?
Oh god...something Dynasty Warriors related for sure...
Probably like Sun Ce / Zhao Yu or Gan Ning / Lu Xun. (GO WU! lol) I feel like there were other couples I'm totally forgetting right now...but yeah god I love Dynasty Warriors...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also...daaamn Gan Ning looks good there I should go buy the latest game. (>w<)
3. Your first fanfic belonged to which couple?
Like the first one I wrote or read?? I went into my oldest of old "old writing" folders and found this list of docs that I haven't been touched in over ten years. SO I'm gonna saaaay it was a Dynasty Warriors fanfic...one of these pairings. (^ ^;)
Also kind of hilarious to see that I literally still organize my fanfic files in the same way for over half my fucking life ago...nice...
Tumblr media
4. Do you remember the first couple you saw a fanart over?
I feel like it would have been something Inuyasha related. That or something Final Fantasy X. I do not remember, but it was probably some version of these scene.
Tumblr media
5. Did you ever get into ship discourse?
Not that I can remember...do not need this in my life...lol but maybe I've reblogged some RPF like discourse? Like the "should or shouldn't you ship" type discussions. I'm on the side of "do whatever you want but don't send it to the famous people" [ex. like ATEEZ fanfic/fanart] or "if they are literally doing it as part of their promo go ahead, it's for fun/they literally requested it as part of their promo" [ex. BillyBabe]. (^ ^;)
Tumblr media
6. Did you used to have any no-otp or have it currently?
It honestly always depends on the quality of the fanart or the fanfic because even a notp can turn into a OH!tp if it's good enough. [Exhibit a: my Phaya/Tharn/Chalothorn fanfic]
7. Who were the couple in the last fanfic you read?
Weirdly the one new Chalothon/Singh fic from The Sign. But I really need AO3 to fix the spelling of his name in the tag...
Tumblr media
8. Currently, do you have any OTPs?
PhayaTharn are the current obsession~
Tumblr media

Fighter (Echo Knight)
A mysterious and feared frontline warrior of the Kryn Dynasty, the Echo Knight has mastered the art of using dunamis to summon the fading shades of unrealized timelines to aid them in battle. Surrounded by echoes of their own might, they charge into the fray as a cycling swarm of shadows and strikes.
Manifest Echo: At level 3 you can use a bonus action to magically manifest an echo of yourself in an unoccupied space you can see within 15 feet of you. This echo is a magical translucent gray image of you that lasts until it is destroyed, until you dismiss it as a bonus action until you manifest another echo or until your incapacitated.
Your echos Ac is 14+your proficiency bonus, 1 hp and immune to all status conditions. If it has to make a saving throw, it uses your saving throw bonus for the roll. It is the same size as you and it occupies its space. On your turn you can mentally command the shadow to move up to 30ft in any direction (no action required). If your echo is ever more than 30 feet from you at the end of your turn, it is destroyed.
As a bonus action, you can teleport, magically swapping places with your echo at a cost of 15 feet of your movement, regardless of the distance between the two of you.
When you take the Attack action on your turn, any attack you make with that action can originate from your space or the echo's space. You make this choice for each attack.
When a creature that you can see within 5 feet of your echo moves at least 5 feet away from it, you can use your reaction to make an opportunity attack against that creature as if you were in the echo's space.
Unleash Incarnation: At level 3 you can heighten your echo's fury. Whenever you take the Attack action, you can make one additional melee attack from the echo's position.
You can use this feature a number of times equal to your Constitution modifier (a minimum of once). You regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.
Echo Avatar: At level 7, you can temporarily transfer your consciousness to your echo. As an action, you can see through your echo's eyes and hear through its ears. During this time, you are deafened and blinded in regards to your own surroundings. You can sustain this effect for up to 10 minutes, and you can end it at any time (requires no action). While your echo is being used in this way, it can be up to 1,000 feet away from you without being destroyed.
Shadow Matyr: At level 10, you can make your echo throw itself in front of an attack directed at another creature that you can see. Before the attack roll is made, you can use your reaction to teleport the echo to an unoccupied space within 5 feet of the targeted creature. The attack roll that triggered the reaction is instead made against your echo.
Once you use this feature, you can't use it again until you finish a short or long rest.
Reclaim Potential: At level 15, you've learned to absorb the fleeting magic of your echo. When an echo of yours is destroyed by taking damage, you can gain a number of temporary hp equal to 2d6 + your Constitution modifier, provided you don't already have temporary hp.
You can use this feature a number of times equal to your Constitution modifier (a minimum of once). You regain all expended uses when you finish a long rest.
Legion of One: At 18th level, you can use a bonus action to create two echos with Manifest Echo, and these echoes can co-exist. If you try to create a third echo, the previous two echoes are destroyed. Anything you can do from one echo's position can be done from the other's instead.
In addition, when you roll initiative and have no uses of Unleash Incarnation left, you regain one use of that feature.

Warriors Orochi: The Recollective Redux Part 1: Introduction and Features
Tumblr media
Introduction
In 2015, I created Warriors Orochi: The Recollective (named after the intended localised name of Musou Orochi Z) as a way of sharing my take on a combined remaster of the first two Warriors Orochi games using the characters from Dynasty Warriors 8 Xtreme Legends (and Xun Yu from Empires) and Samurai Warriors 4-II. Over the next 8 years to 2023, Warriors Orochi 4 came out (to low expectations) and I started playing basically every Warriors game I could get on the gaming PC I built.
While looking back on this series, I realised that I forgot a few characters in some places and I also noticed that some maps I had were duplicated and that it didn’t make sense to essentially have four less stages for Jin with the split route design I had back in 2015. In short, it was time for me to do a refresh of this series and reflect on some of the decisions I made for it in light of Warriors Orochi 4’s release.
The spirit of this project remains – I wanted to give some characters more screentime compared to the original games and I wanted to make the character unlock conditions for some characters easier (most notably the unlock condition for Wu’s Chapter 8-X to unlock Lu Bu).
Without further ado, please enjoy my 2023 remake of Warriors Orochi: The Recollective. Posts will be released every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
Abilities/Items/Treasures will not be detailed in this series.
Changes from the original series
I realised that it was easier to leave the maps from the original games instead of adapting them to the maps from newer games. As such, all original stages from Musou Orochi Z retain their original designs from Dynasty Warriors 5, Samurai Warriors 2 and their Xtreme Legends expansions.
Some new stages from the newer Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors games, namely those that haven’t been featured in Warriors Orochi 3 or 4, are used for the original stages in this game.
The Dream Mode adaptation stages from the Orochi and Wei stories (for Sanzang, Benkei, Orochi’s backstory and Orochi X) along with the side stories in the Orochi Story Mode have been removed.
The first four stages of Jin’s upper and lower routes (which have been renamed the Sima Yi and Sima Zhao routes) have been unmerged and the stages divided into either one of the two routes.
Both the Orochi and Jin stories have been reorganised and new stages have been written to fill in the gaps.
Originally, I neglected to feature Jia Xu, Wang Yuanji, Wang Yi and Yu Jin in the A stories and Naomasa Ii and Guo Jia in the B stories. As such, the officers appearing in each battle have been balanced (to the best of my ability) so as to allow all playable officers to appear as allies or enemies at least once.
Side stages where more than one character can be unlocked have been changed with the extra characters being moved to the A stories for Jin.
The unlock stages for Dong Zhuo, Keiji Maeda and Masamune Date have been changed so that Koshōshō‎‎, Lu Lingqi and Gracia are unlocked instead. This is to retain the former three officers’ statuses as staunch officers of the Orochi Army.
Game features
All Story Mode and Dream Mode stages from Musou Orochi Z are adapted into this game, with certain generic officers upgraded to playable officers where applicable.
8 original stages have been added to the Orochi story to bring it in line with the other stories. Those stages will also cover how Himiko, Kiyomori Taira and Sun Wukong joined the Orochi Army.
Two original stories have been created for the Jin kingdom, following Sima Yi and Sima Zhao respectively. This is to allow room for newer characters to be featured (where they wouldn’t fit in the other stories).
Shennong, Diamondback and Hundun are added as bonus characters from Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate with their own scenarios in Dream Mode (like Sanzang and Benkei).
An additional 40 stages have been added to Dream Mode to accommodate the newer characters (but I won’t be detailing them in this series).
Some unlock conditions for the characters in the Warriors Orochi side story battles have been made easier.
Features in battle
Summoning horses is similar to that of Dynasty Warriors 8: press the up/down button to call your horse and hold the button to automatically mount it.
Dynasty Warriors characters have two EX attacks. All characters use their weapons from DW8XL (except for Xun Yu whose weapon is from DW8E).
Samurai Warriors characters have the Hyper Attack Moveset (Shinsoku Action). Mighty Strikes (Tate) are unfortunately removed, but they regain the ability to perform a Dash Attack (adapted from the Shadow Dodge follow-on).
Musou attacks:
Dynasty Warriors characters use a ground Musou Attack that takes up a portion of the Musou gauge. The Rage Musou is used as the True Musou Attack (that is, when your health is at red or when you have a weapon with the skill Verity).
Samurai Warriors characters use up the full Musou gauge. They will have the finisher when they use their normal Musou attack. In the True Musou Attack, the Ultimate (Kaiden/Frenzy) Musou is used following the normal Musou attack in the style of Samurai Warriors 3/Warriors Orochi 3.
Character types and combat systems are the same as in Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate, save for the True Triple Attack, True Musou Burst and changing battle styles (all 3 characters on the battlefield). Musou Chains (WOZ)/Musou Switch Combos (WO4) are not used.
When the character’s life is in the red or if you have a weapon with the skill Teamwork, a Triple Attack can be used like in Warriors Orochi 2.
New Characters
All older characters will follow their configurations as per Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate, including Special Attacks and Aerial Special Attacks (Type Actions). However, it should be noted that some Dynasty Warriors characters have changed weapons in either DW7E or DW8. After testing their Special Moves, I can see that most of their Special Moves can be retained, however they can be changed if they are too hard to adapt to their new weapon (ie. Cao Ren and Huang Gai, aerial only for the latter). Newer characters debuting in newer games will require original Special Attacks and Aerial Special Attacks to be created.
Below are lists of predicted character types for the newer characters (and predicted Musou Attacks for the Dynasty Warriors characters). Since Warriors Orochi 4 has come out, I’m going to see how many of these I got right.
New Power Characters
Cao Ren (uses normal Musou, Charging Bull 廬山)
Li Dian (uses R1 Musou, Royal Lightning 雷公)
Han Dang (uses normal Musou, Hostile Action 怒気開放)
Guan Yinping (uses R1 Musou, Sparring Practice 組手)
Xiahou Ba (uses R1 Musou, Castle Crusher 崩城轟雷撃)
Kagekatsu Uesugi
Toyohisa Shimazu
Reflection:
In regards to Musous for DW characters, I matched Li Dian and Han Dang; Guan Yinping uses her normal Musou, Military Training 演武.
When I originally wrote this series, I was unaware that Xiahou Ba had changed weapons and Musous in DW7 Empires. Although he maintains the same character type between WO3 and WO4, he actually uses his normal Musou, Lightning Spear 雷貫槍 in WO4. The same goes for Cao Ren as well; he used his R1 Musou, Cascading Falls 瀑布 in WO3.
In regards to character types, I matched Li Dian, Han Dang, Kagekatsu Uesugi and Toyohisa Shimazu. Guan Yinping and Kojūrō Katakura are Speed type characters in WO4.
New Technique Characters
Lu Su (uses normal Musou, Boulder Wave 岩隆波)
Zhang Bao (uses normal Musou, Rapid Thrust 連刃千撃)
Fa Zheng (uses R1 Musou, Binder 始伏陣)
Takatora Tōdō
Nobuyuki Sanada
Lady Hayakawa
Reflection:
In regards to Musous for DW characters, I matched Zhang Bao and Fa Zheng; Lu Su uses his R1 Musou, Mountain Strike 大山隆落衝.
In regards to character types, I matched Lu Su, Fa Zheng and Lady Hayakawa. Zhang Bao is a Power Type, while Takatora Tōdō and Nobuyuki Sanada are Speed Types in WO4.
New Speed Characters
Yue Jin (uses R1 Musou, Flurried Strike 震身連斬)
Xun Yu (uses R1 Musou, Divine Emperor Formation 天煌翔覇陣)
Zhu Ran (uses normal Musou, Conflagration Arrow 烈火椋穿弾)
Guan Xing (uses normal Musou, Skyslider 天空滑閃)
Jia Chong (uses R1 Musou, Darkness Blade - Destruction 闇刃・滅)
Zhang Chunhua (uses normal Musou, Crazed Web 狂沸糸)
Chen Gong (uses R1 Musou, Puppeteer - Submission 召兵劇・伏)
Naotora Ii
Yoshitsugu Ōtani
Koshōshō
Reflection:
In regards to Musous for DW characters, I matched Yue Jin, Zhu Ran, Guan Xing, Jia Chong and Zhang Chunhua; Xun Yu uses his normal Musou, Comet Formation (流煌陣) with the pillars activated through his C1, while Chen Gong uses his normal Musou, Puppeteer – Horizontal (召兵劇・横).
In regards to character types, I matched all of the DW characters except Guan Xing and Zhang Chunhua; said characters alongside the SW characters are all Technique types.
New Wonder Characters
Yu Jin (uses normal Musou, Cauterisation 灼絶)
Wen Yang (uses R1 Musou, Instant Flash 奥義・逆鱗閃)
Lu Lingqi (uses R1 Musou, Zero Point 零鋒覇)
Munenori Yagyū
Hisahide Matsunaga
Naomasa Ii
Reflection:
In regards to Musous for DW characters, I did not match any of them; Yu Jin uses his R1 Musou, Hell Blade 獄刃, Wen Yang uses his normal Musou, Raging Billows 八十一鱗, and Lu Lingqi uses her normal Musou, Angel Blade 天翔刃.
In regards to character types, the Wonder type is removed and incorporated into the Technique type in WO4. If we take this assumption into this series, only Munenori Yagyū, being a Technique type, would have matched my prediction. With the exception of Naomasa Ii who is a Speed type character, other listed characters are Power types in WO4.
Unlock conditions for other characters:
Orochi/Da Ji (Orochi story): Clear Chapter 8 for the Shu, Wei, Wu and SW stories.
Zuo Ci: Clear Chapter 8 for the Shu, Wei, Wu and SW stories.
Dodomeki: Obtain 10 treasures.
Gyūki: Obtain 20 treasures.
Sanzang: Clear Chapter 16 for Wei.
Benkei: Clear Chapter 16 for Wu.
Orochi Z: Clear Chapter 16 for all stories.
Shennong: Clear Chapter 16 for SW.
Diamondback: Obtain 25 treasures.
Hundun: Unlock all other characters.

I attempted to watch this Chinese drama that takes place during the mythical era of China's origin (I think it's officially called the Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors Era? Perhaps just Pre-Imperial China or Pre-Xia Dynasty.). It is not in English so I used my elementary Chinese skills to try and understand it to the point I kinda got what was going on. I was surprised it was from 2010 too, like around the same time as the newer Sanguo adaptation.
The era is like pre-imperial version of Sanguo, which I think drawing parallels between that era and the famous 3K era would be a fun concept. After all, when you boil them both down to their most basic ideas, it is just a buncha human leaders trying to unify China, eventually leading down to 3 factions fighting in the last stretch. (Shennong/Yandi, Huangdi, and Chiyou for the ancient humans, Cao Cao, Liu Bei, Sun Quan for imperial China) (though Chiyou I'd say was more like if Lu Bu didn't lose Xiapi)
My incomplete findings:
The show is called Ancient Legends in English though I can only watch it by searching its Chinese name. What I pieced together was:
The protagonist is Shennong, who was born with an unknown father, which led to the patriarch of his tribe trying to kill him, but learned how to use fire which saved him. He became king at some point and wanted to unify central China, but had to fight Huangdi in a decisive battle that left him defeated and injured. When he was fleeing, a pretty lady saved him (later turns out to be Huangdi's neglected wife) and they ran off to live in a remote forest together because they fell in love. Shennong originally was called Yandi, but he changed his name and basically went into hiding. Though people and Huangdi recognize him as the former king.
There is another character Huashen, the goddess of flowers, who comes down to Earth to help do some things, beat up people, got kidnapped by a dragon prince, but saved herself. Some stuff I didn't pick up but she is a spunky fighter princess overall. Like if Sun Shang Xiang was actually written correctly, you know.
Shennong's pretty girlfriend dies (I think she was sick) and he gets super sad and then meets this strange man that he learns is his father, Fuxi. (Which made me do a little grimace when I remembered the Warriors Orochi versions. But that's par for the course, there's so many variations of how related these gods are. Shennong is sometimes Fuxi and Nuwa's distant descendent depending on your source.) Fuxi and Nuwa are siblings and Nuwa made her clay people. Nuwa I think is the Jade Emperor's wife here. But in this drama, Fuxi rejected his godhood to live among humans and become their king, hit up Shennong's mom, then leave.
There was an ongoing war between Huangdi and Chiyou that happens in the background. Throughout the show, there's this old dude acting like a meta narrator, telling you little tidbits or surmising myths that get featured in the show. He's revealed to be the guy who acts like a messenger for the Jade Emperor in Journey to the West where he I think tells Sun Wukong he was Protector of the Horses (stableboy). Either him or Laozi. It's hard to tell these Taoist old men apart ok. This is why you need to yassify them-That wouldn't help either.
This show also uses some funny cgi for monsters, like a qulin Shennong has is Hot Cheeto red and looks out of place wherever it goes. There is a scene where a god is talking to a floating 3d turtle and then it zooms up on its face and it's just A REAL ASS TURTLE face with a voice coming out of it. Honestly I loved it.
This would be a good show if I COULD UNDERSTAND IT. Sadly I could not find it with English subtitles, so I am just taking my crude piecing togethers and running.

hi! i go by mark and also vinny but call me anything you want lol. this is my madd sideblog <3 welcome! ✨🩵🌙
i've been daydreaming since i was a little kid! my madd isn't super severe, but it does have some negative impacts on my silly little life, mostly with intrusive and upsetting daydreams. (and of course the uh. occasional distractions from schoolwork. what about it) i don't post about them much but i will tag all of these with #vent tag, #madd vent and/or #intrusive daydreaming. everything is ok to reblog unless i turn rbs off.
i have had mostly fictparas and fictparacosms throughout my life, so if you're in their respective fandoms you can interact, but be nice and understand that my interpretation of the characters fits what i want. it's my brain and my coping mechanism. all paras and paracosms are tagged #name of thing*, especially so fictparas dont show up in fandom tags.
my current paracosms (click the links for info posts):
arrows of shield — i have no idea if or when i'll make a page for this it will take too long to explain 😭 tl;dr it is a crossover between agents of shield and arrowverse with my self insert | explore the tag
queerer things still — an original paracosm of magical realism, where five teenagers travel through different realms, grapple with their powers and emotional hardships, and become a found family along the way | explore the tag
yttd paracosm 2 — i dont have a name for it yet but it's my self insert being apart of the death game and figuring out his parents (shunsuke hayasaka and emiri harai) are unexpectedly deeply connected to it all. based on my "who is sue miley's fiancé" theory | explore the tag
the super happy life of akemi ōtani — my samurai warriors blanket paracosm! quite niche, feel free to ask abt it though! it basically encompasses any and all daydreams regarding sw2, sw4, sw5, any crossovers between the three games or dynasty/orochi, and my two ocs! (also it's where my icon is from!! mitsuki my love) spoiler alert: it is NOT super happy
i also have a bunch of mini paracosms i go to whenever i happen to return to a media that i adore <3 i'd detail them but this intro post is already getting too long. you can ask ab them though!
i'm pretty friendly (though very awkward) and would love to meet other madders, so feel free to interact or send asks! INFODUMP TO ME AB YOUR PARACOSMS!! you are not bothering me i swear. i am disabled so i may not get to you quickly but you are in my heart and my inbox (¯︶¯)
i draw sometimes and tag all my art with #martk. i am also on toyhouse where you can see all my paras/ocs!!
all daydreamers are welcome here, no matter what you daydream about. yes, even if it's considered really dark nasty twisted morally reprehensible shit. even if you daydream about it positively! this is a safe space for everything fiction. 🩵 if you have a problem with that then suck my ass

why Edelgard is a distinctly Koei character (and why it matters), a mini-essay
I meant to write this years ago but never found the motivation, so it’s high time I did a write-up of this, because I consider it key to discussing the authorial intent with regard to Edelgard’s character. Three Houses is, at its heart, a Koei game, and so Edelgard naturally takes a lot of inspiration from certain Koei characters.
First things first, though: why am I so sure?
1. Who wrote Three Houses, anyway?
This is the staff list for Three Houses. You will likely notice that IntSys’ primary involvement is on the producer / director level; that is to say, IntSys were more of the... idea + designer people, for lack of a better word. But the vast majority of the staff are from Koei, and this includes the game’s three writers: Yuki Ikeno (lead writer), Mari Okamoto, and Ryohei Hayashi.
Yuki Ikeno, the lead writer, worked on the scenario for both FE Warriors and Age of Calamity, but has also had a hand in Koei-Tecmo’s flagship series: Dynasty Warriors (as a game designer) and Samurai Warriors (though admittedly only as a writer for a more story-light spinoff game, which was 4: Empires).
Mari Okamoto appears to be the most new writer of the three, and is the only one to not have worked on either DW or SW. As with the other two, she worked on FEW and AoC.
Ryohei Hayashi, however, worked on a whole slew of other Warriors games other than FEW and AoC. Most notably, he was one of the writers for Samurai Warriors 3, 4, 4-2, and the first two Warriors Orochi games (which is primarily a SW / DW crossover series).
Given this, I have good reason to believe Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors influenced the writing for Three Houses in a significant way, which is something Yokota and Kusakihara (both directors) also hint at in this interview:
"We can't say it was very conscious, but you know, we always talk with Koei Tecmo people - and some of them have been working with Three Kingdoms for a very, very long time," Yokota says of the similarity between the Chinese classic and the rival countries and their heirs the player must choose between in Three Houses. "In our discussions, maybe it was an unconscious decision. We didn't say 'let's make a homage to Three Kingdoms' - it didn't happen like that."
"Perhaps it was for us a good starting point - to say okay, let's do our version of three kingdoms with three people, three countries," Kusakihara adds.
I’d like to argue that these similarities go far beyond surface-level “three kingdoms at war” stuff mentioned in this interview, and this is perhaps most noticeable with Edelgard.
2. Edelgard and Dynasty Warriors’ depiction of Cao Cao
Dynasty Warriors is a historical fiction hack-and-slash video game series based on The Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Each game in the series is a retelling of the original story (as well as history!), with some also featuring “what if”-scenarios.
Cao Cao, the Chancellor who leads the Wei faction, is one of the most important characters in the games. In the original book, he written as a cruel, scheming villain, but Koei’s portrayal of him is considerably more charitable (particularly in recent games), perhaps due to drawing more from historical accounts of the man, which were more morally grey. He is, of course, playable in all DW games, and the player can experience the story from his point of view.
What makes Koei’s version of Cao Cao similar to Edelgard?
Cao Cao is ruthless and willing to use any means to achieve his goal of ending the chaos in the country, regardless of who he makes an enemy of in the process... much like Edelgard.
Cao Cao is willing to side with his enemies if needed, rather akin to Edelgard’s decision to work with the Slithers out of convenience.
Cao Cao judges people by their merit and skill rather than by their social status, not really caring for tradition (and actively moving away from it, if anything, which was considered highly unusual for the time) -- and so does Edelgard. This is a very important quality of both characters and a big part of their fan appeal.
Despite Cao Cao’s reputation for ruthlessness, he is actually very caring toward his subordinates and treats them well, getting to know them on a personal level. Yes, this, too, is a trait he shares with Edelgard.
The DW fandom, for the most part, loves Cao Cao -- you’d be hard-pressed to find a discussion about him that does not have a bunch of fans arguing that he is the true hero of the series, not Liu Bei (who is the leader of Shu, the rival faction portrayed as more traditionally heroic, and who often comes under criticism from DW fans). Most fans acknowledge Cao Cao’s moral greyness, but -- perhaps ironically -- this only seems to serve to make them all the more interested in arguing that he was in the right and that his ruthless approach to the war was justified.
(I’m going to be completely honest here and admit that my area of expertise lies more with SW than DW, so apologies if this is not as in-depth a comparison as it could have been; the broader picture I paint should be accurate, at least!)
3. Edelgard and Samurai Warriors’ depiction of Nobunaga Oda
Samurai Warriors is Dynasty Warriors’ sister-series and is, like DW, a series of historical fiction hack-and-slash games, except this time the setting is feudal Japan (the Sengoku period, to be specific). Again, the games in the series are retellings of history, but with frequent AU-style “what if”-scenarios. One of the most important characters in SW is Nobunaga, who is constantly compared to Cao Cao both by fans and in official material (such as the crossover games).
Historically, Nobunaga was one of Japan’s three unifiers and a rather controversial figure who is often portrayed as an evil overlord-style villain in fiction. Koei, however, typically portray Nobunaga as an anti-villain, making him more of a cold but charismatic “ends justify the means” character. (This is very in line with their interpretation of Cao Cao.) He has playable routes in all SW games, and he’s also, effectively, the company’s mascot character.
Does he share similarities with Edelgard? Yes!
Much like both Edelgard and Cao Cao, he is cruel and ruthless in war, stopping at nothing to achieve his goal of unifying the country and creating a lasting peace.
Also like both, he eschews tradition in favor of modernity; notably, a key theme of his character is valuing the future over the present. Edelgard believes the sacrifices she makes by fanning the flames of war in the present are necessary in order to pave the way to a better future, and so does Nobunaga.
Despite his reputation for being a villain, he’s surrounded by a variety of very loyal subjects (who are mostly kind characters and not particularly villainous themselves), though many of which are rather blindly loyal. The Black Eagles house is similarly mostly comprised of “softer” characters. Not all subjects of either Edelgard or Nobunaga know the true intentions of the leader they follow.
Historically, Nobunaga called himself The Demon King of Sixth Heaven, who is one of the Buddhist Devils. Naturally, Koei reference this frequently in their games, and their portrayal of Nobunaga is explicitly critical of Buddhist values: he believes greatness comes from clinging to and chasing after one’s desires, in stark opposition to the Buddhist goal of overcoming suffering by giving up on said desires. Edelgard is similarly very openly critical of religion, believing that people should rely on their own strength rather than that of a false God.
More a fun fact than anything, but both Edelgard and Nobunaga are bi. :)
Nobunaga has a “rival” character of sorts who opposes him: Mitsuhide. In most SW games, Mitsuhide is a polite and kind-hearted man who starts out as a devoted subject of Nobunaga. Eventually, Mitsuhide’s belief in his lord falters, leading him to betray and -- ultimately -- kill Nobunaga, as he did historically. Notably, in an AU scenario in SW2 where Nobunaga ends up killing Mitsuhide instead, Nobunaga actually sheds a tear at his death; I would argue this has some similarities to Edelgard’s attachment to Byleth, which is also used as a way to humanize her in the three routes where Byleth sides against Edelgard.
Much as with the DW fandom, SW fans tends to take Nobunaga’s side in discussions, with surprisingly many being critical of Mitsuhide (despite the latter’s portrayal being considerably more heroic and sympathetic).
4. okay, but WHY should I care
This matters because I firmly believe these similarities are intentional. Edelgard is inspired by Cao Cao and Nobunaga, and here are some takeaways I have about her character with this in mind:
- If you’ve ever felt Edelgard’s methods feel a little too close to those of historical great men for comfort, well... it’s not just you. FE3H’s writers most certainly had actual historical people and happenings in mind when writing her.
- The Nintendo Dream interview that referred to CF as the “hadou” / “military rule” (覇道) route caused a big stir in the FE3H community and has already been discussed at length, so all I’ll add is that the word is strongly associated with Koei’s portrayals of Cao Cao and occasionally Nobunaga, with Cao Cao in particular using it as an almost-catchphrase. Coincidence? I’m not so sure.
- Edelgard’s goal of uniting Fodlan comes across as wholly imperialistic and seems at odds with her otherwise anti-traditionalist character, but the likely root of this motivation lies in the settings of DW and SW: in DW, peace comes from uniting the three kingdoms; in SW, peace comes from the unification of Japan. (These are also the goals of both Cao Cao and Nobunaga, though they die before achieving them in most routes.) “Unification” is symbolic of “lasting peace” for Koei’s writers.
- Some Edelgard fans will argue that she is actually the hero of the story, and her having a fully playable route that portrays her sympathetically likely serves to further confuse FE-only players; since when does IntSys let you play on the side of the anti-villains? Well -- IntSys typically don’t... but Koei always do. Crimson Flower is roughly equivalent to the Cao Cao / Wei routes in DW games or the Nobunaga / Oda clan routes in SW games in this regard.
- I think there’s not a lot of point in comparing Edelgard to previous FE characters, because they’re not who she’s chiefly inspired by. That said, an FE archetype Edelgard likely draws from is the Red Emperor, and this comes through clearly in her design. I’d like to also suggest that Edelgard’s post-timeskip design might be intended to evoke a Devil-like image (clad in all red + black horns) as a nod to her opposing the faux-Christian Church of Seiros.
- Some Edelgard detractors make the argument that her popularity and blindly loyal fanbase to a significant extent stem from the fact that she’s a pretty anime woman. Looking at how DW fans and SW fans treat Cao Cao and Nobunaga, though, I have to conclude this is unlikely to be the case; these characters are both older men, yet have loyal fanbases very similar to Edelgard’s. Charismatic anti-villain characters who uproot tradition and forcefully push for change are simply popular.

Hypothetical Sonic the Hedgehog Fighting Game (from Arc System Works) Character Roster
Tumblr media
A good way to use character tier list makers: crafting your dream roster for a fighting game.
Yes, I'm suggesting "Sonic Violence" for the title, because "Sonic Warriors" sound like what folks would expect from a Dynasty Warriors-type game, and every other option I thought about sounds either too battle royale-ish or too generic.
Making up the base/launch roster would be most of the obvious choices, including characters who haven't appeared in mainline Sonic games yet, but have been present in spin-off games at least once. Espio and Charmy would serve as assist characters for Vector, and Wave and Storm would do the same for Jet. Zavok would use the powers of Zazz, Zomom, Master Zik, Zeena and Zor in his moveset. Doctor Eggman and Omochao would use robot walkers of differing sizes.
Missing from the top row (for obvious reasons) is this imaginary game's boss character, whom would be introduced in it and need to be unlocked through completion of the Story Mode.
After the game's release, the DLC seasons will get underway. I picture four of them, giving the game four years of support, and each having a running theme to their character reveals.
Season 1's theme is centered around characters exclusive to the Classic branch of the franchise, allowing Fang the Sniper, Bean the Dynamite, Metal Knuckles, and Heavy King of the Hard-Boiled Heavies to feature alongside the Modern cast.
Season 2's theme is based on adaptations of Sonic made recently and in the past decade, be it T.V. shows, comic books or films, so you could get characters like Rusty Rose from Prime, Surge the Tenrec from IDW, and possibly Longclaw from the film series (the only original - and named - anthro-animal character in the movies to date). I only put Perci from Sonic Boom there because of her Ensemble Darkhorse status.
Season 3's theme is major villains long past; a selection of the most notable villains-of-the-week from the franchise's history, like Neo Metal Sonic from Heroes, Mephiles the Dark from '06 ("HIS NAME IS MEMPHIS TEN-", That's not funny! It was barely funny the first time! It's never going to be funny again!), and Infinite from Forces. Why Captain Whisker, though? Because he's goofy as all heck.
Season 4's theme celebrates good characters who never made a true reappearance, but left a powerful impression with the limited time they had, including E-102 Gamma from Adventure, Emerl from Battle, Sonic the Werehog from Unleashed, and Sir Lancelot from Black Knight.
