» SYNOPSIS: the first day at idol inc.
THE DAY you decided to take the path to become part of the industry was once you were just a little boy. Watching the television’s screen showing numerous group of people dancing and singing made your heart beat faster than ever. Could it is that you’ve fallen in love with it? Definitely.
A group of boys dancing and singing in a huge stage with millions of people watching them, how could they just continue doing it and not feeling scary? The lyrics, the melody, and even the cute smiles from them made you feel something, it made your eyes sparkle like never before and how your lips began to repeat the song even though you never listen to it, everything just made you more intrigued.
From that day onwards, you start training with your parents’ help by sending you to singing and dancing classes you could. It’s a slow journey, but you did polish all your skills to the very best you could, becoming someone that both mother and father could look up to and be proud of. Their smile and hugs before you enter the program’s audition mean something, they are proud of how much you put yourself into it.
“NEXT CONTESTANT, COMING IN.”
A voice from the speaker calls you to enter, so quickly, but modestly, you make your way to the center of the stage. Now, you stand in front of the many jurors who already look tired after watching at least thirty boys go through their eyes, so if you don’t impress them right now, you will be eliminated.
The light from the parled shine above your figure, easily showing everyone present of your stunning appearance and how you remind them of a god, maybe even a deity. Maybe it’s how your eyes sparkle with the many-colored light reflected, could it be your hair that matches your dark green sweaters? Or is it because you transmit a mysterious aura just by smiling? Well, the jurors are going to find it out soon.
“Hello, I’m [L.Name] [Name], a pleasure to meet you.” you bow at them, giving your best smile to gain extra points. “I’m nineteen years old.”
None of the jurors said something, at least not towards you, they whisper to each other as some just stare at you with their nonchalant expressions. It’s probably a normal thing for the contest to become nervous, right?
One of the women look at you with a slight smile, “Could you tell your specialty?” she looks familiar, but you can’t recall from where in specific.
“My specialty is dance, but I would like to add that my singing is great as well.” you replied, with more courage that you originally have. Did you mess it up? You hope not.
The dark-haired woman share glares with her companions at the table, more whispers between them, occasionally you could hear them admiring your boldness, then her attention comes back towards you.
“Really?” she rest her face one of her hands, smiling at you. “Then could you give us a small demonstration?”
“Yes, madam.” you nodded and took a few steps backwards as the melody began to play in the background.
With a deep breath, you took a final look at your surroundings, completely aware of everyone’s attention are now at you, waiting for either your success or failure. But today is the beginning of your story, the very beginning of your journey into this program.
“when you say that you love me
I walk on the sky
Tell me about forever, just one more time.”
If the people in the studio aren’t paying attention, now all of them are, especially with how deep is your voice while singing. Compared to the much boys competing here, you are a rare gem between them. The cameramen who trying to capture the best side of you as everyone’s eyes are now on you. They were like moths that attract you while you are light in the darkness.
“when you say that you love me
one single sentence is enough for me
that you’re not going to change, just one more time.”
As the song progresses, you body moves according to the rhythm of the sweet melody of your voice. The delicate movement of your body in contrast of your voice is more than easy to enchant the jurors and the contestants that came before you. Despite the initial nervousness, you know you are doing a great job of impressing them.
And once the song finally reach it end, you do the final pose in front of the cameras with a gentle smile on the face, recuperating both your breath and stamina from this little presentation. It’s clear that you’ve put your body and soul into this, now you just got to wait for the jurors’ thoughts on it.
“You did pretty well. ” the dark-haired woman asked you, her beauty is easily noticeable and her yellow golden eyes are unique…wait, you do recall who this woman, she is Youngrin from Saintu! “and you are what you said, an excellent singing with a good choreography. Not to mention, is quite hard to see someone with a such deep voice like your.”
Of course, the remaining of the table were also impressed by your performance, especially a brown-haired woman who looks more approachable than Youngrin. Her eyes sparkle as she keeps looking at you.
“[L.Name], right?” she smiled. “I must say your voice is quite unique! It’s been a while since any of us heard someone with a voice so deep and husky like your! And you manage to catch the song’s tone quite well.”
Soon, the other compliment your performance with positive feedback and in the end, you receive your grade. Now, you’ve got the 16th place, definitely not a bad place for a guy who didn’t have any agency before entering this program! So good job.
Once the jurors let you leave the stage to sit on the grandstand where the others contestants are, you taken the notice of another two guys already sitting closer to you. A brown-haired one that seems quite excited to be here, something painted(?) under his eyes and the black-haired guy who despite getting a good rank, remains so relaxed.
“Hi.” you whisper to them, a shy smile on the lips, taking a seat between of them. “Sorry for my intrusion.”
“It’s okay, you didn’t interrupt anything.” the nonchalant one said, despite his words, he looks relieved by your presence.
The other one looked disappointed and pretended to be sad over it, “Don’t say that, Moondae~” the brown-haired then giggled, “You are hurting my feelings.”
The other guy, now know as Moondae, stares at you in silence completely ignoring the presence of the another one. Is there something in your face? Or is he just a little awkward?
“I like your presentation, [L.Name].” instead of the neutral face, he smiled at you, but just a little. “It’s quite hard to see a guy with a deep voice singing.”
A small blush hit your cheeks and a tiny part from your ears, you’ve received many compliments about your voice and look since you can remember, but coming from Moondae feels so different and you don’t know how to explain why.
“Thank you, Moondae.” you smiled. “I’m sure that your presentation was good, probably way better than mine.”
The three of you talk for a brief time, being mostly Lee Sejin telling you about his and Moondae’s performance, including how shocking was the song that the latter one choose to dance to in front of everyone, bringing you a few laughs before another contest comes into the stage.
Once your eyes set to back to the stage, you took a great view of the boy down there. Golden hair is probably soft as silk, eyes that remind of the sweetness of honey, and a sweet aura that easily enchants anyone who looks at him, making a perfect combination for a pretty-looking guy. Thinking now, he is the completely opposite of you, in a good way though.
For a brief second, you and the blond boy share a glimpse of each other. The light blush on his face is a hint of anxious and scared he is of his incoming presentation in front of everyone’s eyes, while you can’t do much for him, you just give him a small smile, a way to cherish him up. Then, he introduces himself, or at least, he tries and failed to do.
“Ah-ahh…hello…” oh no, the blond got stage frighten. “I-I am S-Seon Ahyeon.”
He began to shaken in nervousness, almost like he is some deer surrounded by its predators. It’s probably easy to say that not only he lacks of self-esteem, but also is very conscious of himself. Ahyeon almost fails to say that he is twenty years old for how lower was his voice, but in the end, he did a good performance considering his initial problems. Now, he gained the 18th place overall.
Receiving his rating, Ahyeon walk over to the grandstand and took a seat next to Moondae, none of them speak a word, just a small nod coming from the black-haired as a knowledge of the blond’s result. Both of them are awkwardly, so why not helping a little?
“You did well.” you whispered to him. “I liked your dance and vocals.”
In return, you got a sweet smile from him. If was possible, it would blind you with his cuteness and you wouldn’t complain about it. Maybe, you should get closer to him and so Moondae. It will be fine to have someone like him around.
And after five long hours, the first evaluation finally ended. It’s took over more than one hundred guys to things to you received your final ranking, 21nd place which is fine, resulting on you taking the premium bus alongside Moondae, Ahyeon and Lee Sejin.
“I’m glad to be around you.” you smiled at your currently companion, Sejin. “I-I mean, that we got a good classification after all, right?”
He laughed, “Of course! We are going to be here for a while, maybe even sharing a dorm together.”
You nodded at his words, it will be better if you share a room with a familiar face like him. Regardless of being around so many guys in the past hours, you feel pressured to befriend them, specially with some look so intimidating despite yourself being taller than most of them.
The ride to the participants’ dorm was a nice one, talking with Sejin made you feel more comfortable in a new environment, but ended being quite sad once you don’t be sharing the room with him, but luckily, you recognize two of your roommates. Moondae and Ahyeon.
It was cute to see the blond following Moondae around like a lost puppy, even choosing to share the bunk bed together. They are going to be close friends, you can feel it.
Saying that you aren’t nervous for the next part would be lying, on the opposite, you are having an internal crisis while surrounded by the other participants and the male host describing the next part of today’s event.
“DEAR PARTICIPANTS, HOW WAS YOUR FIRST EVALUATION? WE’RE GOING TO START YOUR FULL-FLEDGED TRAINING NOW!”
The host explained that he will give out badges to show the results from vocal and dance from the early presentation that everyone did earlier and to show where they need to get better and how it change based in real time. Things are getting difficult, will you be able to endure it? Or will be left behind? You can’t get home so early, mother and father would kill you!
“NEXT IS 21st PLACE, [L.NAME] [NAME] PARTICIPANT, PLEASE COME FORWARD!”
Luckily, you managed to play a calm facade to walk toward the stage to be handed your badges for now. Making things more comfortable, you manage to score a golden vocal badge and dance grand in silver, meaning you are currently in a safe place for now. Unlike many of those who didn’t even get a badge for a start, poor guys, most of them will be destroyed online by the so-called fans.
Then, when the distribution of the badges was over and once silence took over the room, the host told explained how everyone will have to perform the chosen song in ten days.
IT’S ME (SHINING STAR)
It’s easy to say the song is a good choice for those who are rank better at dancing due the footwork in the chorus which is hard to memorize by it’s speed. But you won’t give up, not after spending so much time preparing yourself for this to enter here and losing a few nights of sleeping will be worth in he end. That’s why once you come back to the dorms, you straight went to train inside the many dance room from there.
Without anyone bothering you or watching you (well if you don’t count the camera on the walls), it’s easier to catch up with the movements from the tutorial videos that you’ve seen online and the one provide from the studio itself, while the singing part was far more smooth to learn. You lost yourself in training, you didn’t knowledge the figure behind it until you turned around due to the choreography.
“Oh—“You almost fall when took notice of the guy looking at you. “Do you need something?”
The black-haired didn’t speak first, by his expression, he does want to say something at you, maybe asking for help? Well, seeing the lack of badges on him, it could be. It won’t be wrong to help him, right? You read the name on his clothes before stepping closer to him.
“Lee Sejin A…” now makes sense why you saw the other one with an ‘B’ earlier, there is two of them now. “You need some help, right?”
He nodded, “Y-yeah…” a tiny blush grown in his face as he plays with his fingers, not wanting to raise his head to stare at your taller figure. “I saw you dancing and singing some parts that I’m having some difficult…so if I’m not bothering, could you help me?”
This guy is adorable, you could easily carry him with only your arms like a kitten if the cameras aren’t recording this moment to air later.
“Of course I can!” you squealed, too loud. “Sorry— I can help you, Sejin.”
The smile on his face says all, he looks way more calm now, probably relieved that you accept his request. For the remaining hours before the curfew, you two trained together, and the same thing went on for the rest of the ten days until the presentation.

Debut or Die episode 35 behind the scenes
mtl below
Soheun
Episode 35
In this episode, the glitter effect in Raebin's part, and the subtitles for Hyung-ah's smile in Chungwoo's part… I remember JangJin writing on the storyboard, 'Reference: Azusa's strangely unsophisticated and king-making direction.'
I really enjoyed drawing images of medieval rabbits. As I continue to draw and design handsome and pretty girls while writing the manuscript, I think there is a behind-the-scenes story about this cut whenever there is a cut that can make such a mistake... (I happily drew octopus cut in the same vein.)
The scene where Moondae, Raebin, and Eugene appear in the episode's "I was worried at first," and Moondae leans against the wall before recalling the hero keyword in the episode 29. The pleasure of watching the same scene from a different angle... Did you notice it!
Sometimes, there are scenes where the image doesn't appear on social media like the "RaebMoonCha"* Stock Certification" account, and according to Jangjin, "I monitored it with Wi-Fi that doesn't work." I think it was the same for the living room and the convenience store scene.
*랩뭉차 = the name combination for Raebin, Moondae, and Eugene

Episode 35
The monitoring (with beer) scene in this episode was my own interpretation of a question I had while reading the same scene in the original. In the original, thinking things like 'I'll straight away make up the bedding and 'I can do the monitoring tomorrow'' got me drunk and I got a little bothered by this and that, so I quickly finished the day in my head and went to sleep, so I reflected on it. What do you think? And, to some extent, he looks red when drinking in a cartoonish way, but I think he drinks better than he looks. I also looked younger than my original body. Anyway, I would like to express my overwhelming gratitude to Soheun who brings out my soft and subtle appearance so well!!
In the case of the 'Stock Certification' event page photo, when working on the SNS image in the previous manuscript, Moondae shared with Soheun that the image would not appear well because there was not a lot of cell phone data… as it was a house he had purchased in a hurry. I decided that it was worth it if it wasn't the basic option of a studio… This time, I actively reflected it in the storyboard.
I feel safe having to change locations a couple of times in one episode. This seems to be the case. This time, in the original, it was set at one time. A convenience store scene was added in the middle of the flowing narration to create a sense of movement. I heard that the problem is that if you enter a place that doesn't exist, I thought about various things to maintain a similar tone to the original work. Listening to it took a lot of energy. Then what if sometimes I go further than the original, so I start again. It seems that there are many cases where it goes back to… Anyway, What I wanted to say to Soheun when drawing the convenience store scene was, 'Know the level of recognition. Will Moondae, who is struggling, actually eat a lunch box inside a convenience store? 'What?' 'Is there a microwave oven at Park Moondae's place?' ‘What should I eat? That's right. My conscience does not allow me to feed triangle kimbap again. is.' Etc… The memory of being a question villain in many ways fills my head. It just passes by. The second team match ended well and the reactions were good. As a means of self-congratulation (the writer's affection for eating well) I think I bought a rather tasty lunch box this time.
Continuing from number 3, strangely enough, we put a lot of thought into choosing a location. This time, even in the case of Ahyeon and Keunse's (Big Sejin) meal, we had to decide whether the three of us would have a light lunch, a regular meal, or go to a restaurant close to the studio. I remember thinking about it for a long time. Brunch cafe, Baekban restaurant, pork cutlet restaurant, salad cafe, etc… After writing about it, I feel like they secretly consider space to be important. (It's a past story, but I remember thinking a lot about Ahyeon's house as well, considering several candidates.) Every time, there's something strange. I am always grateful to our webtoon team teachers who give serious thought to every detail and do not hesitate to edit the background…
As Chungwoo and Raebin in this episode are participants whose team battles did not go smoothly in the previous contest, we tried to create an atmosphere in which they were quite satisfied with this team battle. I thought about what it would be like if Soheun also had those feelings. Although it was exaggerated by editing, I hope that Chungwoo fans can feel from the screen that Chungwoo looks quite satisfied!
