They’re different!
Tumblr media
After looking at the combine overwiki’s edit page for the oracle turret I have learned that there seems to be some debate on whether or not the line is a reference to Crow, based on the downvote numbers on edits. Idk….

Day 16. Oracle turret.
I'll die on my headcanon that Doug was the one who reprogrammed the Oracle to what she is. We see a strange turret in p1. It doesn't shoot, but reacts if picked. Also it has tools next to it and some rattmann drawings. So I believe it's her!

For Day 16 (Oracle Turret) of @chelltastic’s Portal Drawtober 2023 Challenge. As I’m not really an artist, I chose to write short pieces for the prompts.
What's more likely, that you're being chased by a homicidal computer or that this is all just the paranoid delusion of an unstable mind?
Left.  Right.  Right again.  Again.  Left.  Keep going straight down this hall no matter what.  Doug Rattmann followed without thinking, trusting the voice that was his guide as he ran through the twisting passages of the spaces behind.  She'd gotten a bit too close for comfort, and he'd needed to escape.  With luck he'd be able to return to the spaces she patrolled somewhere much different where she wouldn't be expecting him and he could avoid her notice again.  That involved moving through the areas that she couldn't see directly:  the mechanical areas, which were only designed for humans in the sense that a human may have to come through once every few years if a mechanical fault sprung up.  There was nothing safe about these spaces outside of the lack of GLaDOS.  Perhaps they were the safest places in Aperture, period.
The Companion Cube he had slung over his back knew these areas well enough and could guide him, and he was thankful for its voice.  It was times like these that not having his medication was helpful, as he didn't have to think and he could just react, guided by the one person he could trust.  It didn't matter if its voice was only in his head.  In this place there was no one else, and it was a welcome comfort even if during his lucid times its voice would fade and it would be just him against the darkness and GLaDOS' constant, roving eyes.  Existence here was madness, and he was already very well acquainted with it.
Left here, came the direction and he threw himself into it, turning the corner out of breath.  He wasn't sure why he was still running, outside of the fact that he'd started running to put some distance between him and his entrance point.  She couldn't see him here, even if she knew he was there.  Like a cockroach behind the walls, she could bang and yell all she wanted but it was up to him when and where he emerged again.  He slowed to a walk at last, gulping down air.  Tachycardia was simply a sign that he was alive, which was better than the asystole that awaited him.  He'd take it.
A familiar sound of the whine of servos and he slowed to an abrupt stop.  Turrets.  The one thing that would put a damper on any escape attempts.  He hadn't expected to encounter any here, in this area.  Had GLaDOS anticipated his movements and sent them up ahead to kill him? He stopped, slowly peeking around the corner.  He was in luck, it was a single turret, facing to the side as though gazing wistfully off of the catwalk.  Wait, advised the Cube, and he did.  It didn't seem to take any notice of him, continuing to stare off, lost in its own little turret world.  It wouldn't be difficult to sneak up and knock it over, and so he hunched down in an attempt to hide himself.  It was pointless, really, as the Cube on his back made him highly visible regardless of his stealth attempts.
Despite everything he still managed to get up close to the turret.  Stop, advised the Cube, but it was too late and he had already reached out to shove it over.  This one isn't dangerous...  it finished as he ducked out of the way to avoid the usual frenzied firing that a downed turret would engage in before deactivating.  He didn't want to believe it, but to his surprise this one didn't shoot at all despite having been knocked off of its feet.  Its laser waved around slightly but it didn't seem to be threatening at all.  After a moment to make sure it wasn't going to change its mind and open fire, he moved closer to it to inspect it.
"Please help me," it said in the voice that all turrets shared, soft and pleasant and full of danger.
It's a friend, the Cube told him.  That was all he needed to hear, and he reached down to try to hoist the thing back to its thin metal legs.  It took a lot more work than knocking it over had, but soon he got it sitting back upright.  Being so close to a turret put him on edge, even if it was one that did not seem at all interested in filling him full of lead.  It stared serenely at him, its optic unblinking despite his unsteady movements in righting it.
"Thank you," it said once he'd gotten it back onto its feet.  That was unusual.
"You're welcome," he replied without thinking.  Talking to things in Aperture only made sense.  Most of them were sentient in some way.  Sometimes they would even answer, like this.
"I'm different," the turret announced a moment later, after it had likely run a little self-diagnostic.  Somehow he didn't think that was a stock phrase that the turrets had, even if they ran into internal errors.
"Oh? How so?" he asked.
"It's better to save it for when you need to truly see," the turret responded.  There was something about its voice that chilled him.  It was still that voice, the soft voice that every turret had, but the words coming out of it were unlike anything he'd ever heard a turret say.  Somehow that was more terrifying than a turret announcing that it had him in its sights.  "When in doubt, always go right," it advised him sedately, as though discussing what had been on the cafeteria menu.
"Right..?" he asked, glancing to his side as though there might be something there.  There wasn't.
Listen, the Cube told him, and he fell silent, his attention going back to the turret.
"Andromeda was sacrificed to save the kingdom from the monster ravaging its shores, after her mother angered the gods," the turret informed him.  There was no doubt about it, this was definitely not actually happening, it was simply playing out in his mind.  "You always have to go back for something."
There was a long pause, where it didn't seem to have anything else to say.  Then finally, it finished.  "That's all I can say.  Don't forget!"  It fell silent after that, staring at him without moving or acting further.
It was difficult to tell if this was reality, if there really was a turret somewhere deep within Aperture that could speak in oracles or if the stress had compounded his already fractured mind.  Maybe it was both.  Maybe he was too tired to fend it off.  As the turret had become unresponsive, he eventually gave it a little wave and turned to leave it to its contemplations.  It was time to attempt to find a path that would take him back out from behind the scenes into a location she wouldn't be expecting.
Maybe it's a natural result of this place, the Cube mused as they traveled.  The machines are always more than they seem.
"Or they’re good at hiding their true nature until it’s too late,” he added.  “The Oracle of Delphi was chosen from the masses," he continued, picking his way carefully along a creaky catwalk.  "Whether literate or not, wealthy or poor.  What's the equivalent of that to this place?
A turret.  Or a cube, the Cube said in agreement.  Someone who's a natural part. Someone who can receive the madness of this place and interpret it.
"Are you so in tune with the underlying code of this place that you'll be giving me oracles next?" he asked, a tired smile curling the corners of his mouth.
I only give you what you need.  You already have too much to think about, it replied.
That much was true.  He was still trapped down there, he may very well have been the last person left alive at this point for all he knew.  He cast a glance over his shoulder, just being able to make out the distant shape of the Oracle Turret.  "I hope that it'll be okay," he mused.  "It must be lonely, to be an Oracle in a place like this."

The oracle turret is the military android they gave the one copy of the laws of robotics for it to share.
The oracle turret isn’t even a particular turret, just the turret that has the copy of Asimov’s laws of robotics at the moment
